Truth be known, I wouldn't be nearly as concerned about the MN race if it was anyone other than Franken in the runoff. Long before he slithered into the political world, I considered him an unfunny, sniveling creep who was almost physically painful to watch in action. Seating a petulant, spiteful, terminally-adolescent nerd like himself in the Senate would be a disaster for Minnesota, and the nation.

I called in with a joke one time that the host didn't laugh at (same host I cracked the "frequent caller" joke to). In fact there was a weird moment of silence before I said, "that was a joke". He instead decided to take me seriously and launched into a great rant making some great points about American freedom. Good times.

I wrote an open letter to the Senators.

This open letter is addressed to Senators who believe their oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America is above party politics, personal prestige, or career advancement.

Once again a few men and women stand upon a pivot of history. Once again a mere handful will determine the fate of nations and people. This time the burden falls on your shoulders, the decisions you make in the next two years will determine whether the Constitution of the United States of America stands, or is irreparably changed.

You, a United States Senator sought high office. You took an oath to uphold, defend, and protect the ideals set forth in the Constitution. You’ve chosen this place and time to serve, history and posterity calls you now to do your sworn duty.

Saxby Chambliss kicked ass in his Georgia runoff against the Democrat. Kicked ass. Most of the MSM reports curiously do not tell you how broadly he crushed his opponent. Here's on that does...

[Link: www.bloomberg.com...]

Chambliss received 60.2 percent of the vote to 39.8 percent for Martin with 60 percent of the precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press

The interesting thing about this runoff is there was no way for the Dems to monkey with it. No dubious parade of losers pawning ballots for wine and cigarettes. No Acorn. No secret counting. No lost and discovered ballots. Just an honest race. And see how that worked out.

Maybe they ought to have a new election in Minnesota. Huh?

Here's who's up in 2010:

#

Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas
Barbara Boxer of California
Ken Salazar of Colorado
Christopher Dodd of Connecticut
Daniel Inouye of Hawaii
The Illinois open seat due to Obama resigning to be President of US
Evan Bayh of Indiana
Barbara Mikulski of Maryland
Harry Reid of Nevada
Chuck Schumer of New York
Byron Dorgan of North Dakota
Ron Wyden of Oregon
Patrick Leahy of Vermont
Patty Murray of Washington
Russ Feingold of Wisconsin

Republican incumbents

Richard Shelby of Alabama
Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
John McCain of Arizona
Johnny Isakson of Georgia
Mike Crapo of Idaho
Chuck Grassley of Iowa
Jim Bunning of Kentucky
David Vitter of Louisiana
Kit Bond of Missouri
Judd Gregg of New Hampshire
Richard Burr of North Carolina
George Voinovich of Ohio
Tom Coburn of Oklahoma
Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania
Jim DeMint of South Carolina
John Thune of South Dakota
Bob Bennett of Utah

Most of the Dem seats look to be in disturbingly safe districts for them, unless the economy stays in the tank the next two years, which I neither expect nor want.

Have you told the rest of the lizards how Tennessee bucked the national trend, and instead of bending over for BHO and leftists, instead threw out the Democrats from the State House for the first time since the Civil War?

That, and keeping Harold Ford out of the Senate in 2006 (and denying homeboy AlGore in 2000) should give Tennessee near-celebrity status in conservative circles.

Of course, we won't mention Fred Thompson..

That's my assessment as well. The GOP has to start somewhere, and that's in the House, where if they play their cards right (and I have my doubts), they could start picking off seats, especially if Democrats continue to push socialist policies and none of them actually work - extending the gloom and doom on Wall Street and Main Street.

If the economy really goes sour, or heaven forbid a major terror attack occurs domestically, all bets are off as to what happens in 2010, especially the latter.

First thing in a primary defense weapon is ease of use and comfort in shooting. You what a gun that feels natural. Guns you have to work at are fine for the range, and are lots of fun. But when the chips are down, the shooting part has to automatic, allowing you to focus on the decision process.

Lot of ranges do rentals, for a reasonable fee they'll let you shoot a variety. Most folks on a range are pretty friendly, and for the price of ammo, will let you try theirs unless it's a real valuable piece.

Mumbai update.....
Cops just had 577 rifles, hadn't fired in 10 yrs

The state constabulary was grossly unprepared to deal with the worst-ever terror attacks on the metropolis because of an acute shortage of weapons and ammunition.

Official records show that for a force of well over 1.8 lakh, the home department procured a meagre 2,221 weapons — 577 for Mumbai, and 1,644 for the rest of Maharashtra.

‘‘Under the centrally sponsored modernisation programme, we purchased almost all types of weapons, but for a state like Maharashtra, the number of weapons was grossly inadequate ,’’ a senior official told TOI on Monday.

In the absence of a firing range and of ammunition for practice, members of the law enforcement agencies have not opened fire in the last ten years. ‘‘I’ve been in the police force for a long time, but I had no occasion to open fire for practice,’’ a senior inspector of police said.

Not surprising.

OT.........AAARRRGGG! This crap drives me nuts: Bangladesh problems due to climate change!

From the BBC (I know, I know...) but there is a slide show of pics, showing what the poor Bangladeshi's are going through all due to climate change! complete with dead bodies...

How DO we put a stop to this shit?

What else would cause sea levels to rise, other than climate change?

I know: meteors hitting the water and filling the oceans.

No wait: comets hitting the earth. Comets are mostly made of water ice.

No wait: ummm, the expansion of the universe is causing water molecules to each get bigger. That's it!

Fact is, even a few centimeters of rising sea level will flood a few tens of meters of Bangladeshi land. The grade is danged near zero going inland. If, as projected, sea levels rise several meters, a lot of Bangladesh is going to go underwater.

The current non-islamist terrorist problem in Northeast India is in some part due to clashes between illegal immigrant Bangladeshis (well, yeah, they're all Muslim) and native, (well, yeah, polytheist) hill tribes people of India's frontier provinces. But it's the tribesmen planting the bombs on trains etc. They imagine that if they were and independent country, Indian rules and regulations wouldn't hinder their quarrel with the immigrants, (legal Hindu immigrants also being a sore point). What they probably don't figure on is that without the Indian army, there would be nothing to stop those Bangladeshi immigrants. Hill tribespeople, backward, poorly armed, and few, cannot stop even an informal invasion from Bangladesh. From where they sit, Bangladesh is a first-world superpower.

And why do Bangladeshis want hill tribe land? Partly because their own land is going under water. It's not land well suited to Bangladeshi farming methods. It's maybe not even well suited to farming of any sort. But a desperate man will try anything.

Maybe they're warming up for a while ? I said it on a previous register thread:
it takes courage to post here, where the fact checking lizard army with it's vast knowledge and sharp wit might knock your socks off in minutes.

Maybe I am jaundiced a bit - been posting here since before registration around the time the Iraq War started. I wouldn't feel intimidated - a lot of what folks post is opinion or just chatter. I guess I tend to the opinion / link side of things and don't chat a lot. As for getting fact checked, it is usually easy to qualify an assertion (by using IIRC or some other qualifier) or to simply check for yourself via google before posting so that you can back it up.

One tool that I have found useful but uncommon is silobreaker in that you can put in a vague topic and find many specific articles on that topic as well as tangents. You can then find interesting things to add to a discussion.

Bangladesh is on a delta that has been prone to flooding for its modern natural history.

Seas rising? I just got back from a trip across the Colorado Plateau. Plenty of geology there (and even in the Anza Borrego desert) suggests that we had higher seas. Also, the Mesa Verde park rangers I spoke to actually showed me some of the tree rings sectioned from timbers from the cliff dwellings there - they had a much warmer climate in southern Colorado 750 years ago. They left the region as it got colder because they could no longer grow their crops on that Mesa - corn especially.

This planet is a complex place with a long and varied climatological history. Using Bangladesh as an example of a place suffering floods due to climate change is a stretch. They've suffered them for centuries.

re: #397 Killgore Trout

The gravity of what this caused is a disgrace: Outgunned Mumbai police hampered by First World War weapons

Indian police who bore the brunt of last week’s attacks on Mumbai had defective bulletproof vests, First World War-era firearms and insufficient weapons training, police sources have told The Times.

Many wore plastic helmets and body protectors designed for sticks and stones, rather than bullets, as they fought highly trained militants armed with AK47 rifles, pistols, grenades and explosives.

The contrast between them was vividly illustrated yesterday by CCTV footage of two militants attacking Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus, Mumbai’s main railway station, last Wednesday.

It shows the gunmen spraying automatic fire while two constables cower behind pillars, one armed with a .303 rifle similar to the Lee-Enfield weapons used by British troops in the First World War.

Similar scenes were played out at other targets in the first seven hours of the attacks, in which 16 policemen died, including three of India’s top officers.

“That’s 16 too many,” Maxwell Pereira, a former joint commissioner of Delhi police, said. “These casualties could have been prevented if they’d been properly equipped.” The abysmal state of police equipment helps to explain how ten gunmen managed to paralyse a metropolis of 18 million people for more than 60 hours.

It also illustrates how ill-prepared India’s 2.2 million-strong police force is to tackle another such attack.

“We’d react exactly the same way tomorrow,” Ajay Sahni, of the Institute for Conflict Management, said.

He described India as one of the “least policed” places in the world, with 126 officers per 100,000 people, compared with 225-550 per 100,000 in most Western countries.

Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, has one of India’s better police forces, but even it is woefully ill-equipped because of a centralised and highly corrupt procurement system....

O'Reilly actually said Obama is going to be a very conservative President. What the hell is that douchebag smoking 'cause I want some!

The situation may force him to be... there wont be very much he can do to the economy because of the recession and large national debt.
He wont be able to decrease the military budget much with us in Iraq unti 2011 and Afghanistan until who knows when.

Dmestic Social issues will have to be funded... there is a limit on what he can spend, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security will tie his hands. Not much he can do.

The roll back on gay rights in Calif... etc.

I think he can do some stuff with stem cell research.

If he touches abortion his party could be weakened in the legislsature... remember what happened when his voting history in the Illinois legislature was exposed regarding the born alive act? He will have to be careful, because this could mobilize conservatives to fight him tooth and nail, and he needs every bit of support he can get with as little wiggle room as he has.

The issues may force him to be less Liberal than he is inclined to be or as he campaigned.

You don't. You establish it over time, and even long timers who say untrue or ridiculous things get instantly challenged on it.

And that, for some of us newbies, leads to hopeless lurking and frustrated watching while others say what we were thinking but were faster typists and better than us...leading to more hopeless lurking and wishful wanting to jump in with the great ones...

Anyone remember how it felt to try to jump into a jump roping but just couldn't? It's like that! Or, that wall-glue at dances for some of us...

Then, when you get to posting it will lead to obsessive karma checking and hoping that someone will upding or respond or something.

But, it's all about getting the ideas out there in such a way that is hopefully inspiring, transforming or "evolving" the discussion...

Khomeini’s rules for sheep love:

#2631. It is loathsome to eat the meat of horse and mule and donkey and if somebody makes coitus with them, that is an intercourse, they become unlawful and they must be taken out of the city and sold elsewhere.

#2632. If they have intercourse with a cow and sheep and camel their urine and dung becomes unclean and drinking their milk will also be unlawful and they must be killed and burned without delay, and the person who had intercourse with them must pay money to the owner. Further, if he had intercourse with any beast its milk becomes unlawful.

Most honest posters don't have problems, it's the ones who exagerate, get into hyperbole, and who get overly emotionally attached to their sometimes bad argument that do. Personally Sig, Glocks never seem to fit my hand. Nothing against Glocks, it's my hands. H&K's fit like a glove but too pricey.

First thing in a primary defense weapon is ease of use and comfort in shooting. You what a gun that feels natural. Guns you have to work at are fine for the range, and are lots of fun. But when the chips are down, the shooting part has to automatic, allowing you to focus on the decision process.

I like my Taurus PT 911, dual sided safety/decocker, and double action, I carry with one in the chamber all the time, fits my hand quite nicely...(I have large hands, and many smaller ones are not comfortable)

I used to believe the whole Utopia on Earth crap too. Then I grew-up. Had to accept that I was designed to be an imperfect being, just like all the other humans. It's rather difficult for imperfect beings to create perfection.

It does suck that some people are so imperfect that they would commit such atrocities. I big part of growing-up for me, was to accept that it is not for me to understand. I have accept that, for whatever reason, G-d does have a plan and all I can do is ask for knowledge of His will and the power to carry it out.

Back when I used to carry, I carried a Ruger Security Six. No safety there, either. But Glocks have always struck me as just a little too ready to go. If you are down to where flipping a thumb safety off is going to make a difference, you are in one hell of a bad position. You can flip the safety when you are aiming. I learned a long time ago that I can't miss fast enough to win. The half-second I take to aim can be the difference between a clean miss and a kill.

In truth, the only times I've ever needed a gun, I wound up not needing to shoot at all. The presence of the weapon defused the situation enough that I never had to pull the trigger.

Understand your reservation on Glock. LE training we drilled and drilled and drilled for those "one hell of situation" draw, and fire two pointed rounds, followed by aimed rounds. The first two rounds if you're off target do have a psychological impact on the opponent. The pointed rounds we drilled until they were as good as aimed, especially in under 7 yd engagement where most engagements take place.

re: #592 Occasional Reader

Try putting it back in its holster when your nerves are jacked up from having to use it, and see what happens. I've heard more than once of cops shooting themselves in the leg trying to do just that. That's why I thought dude might have been using a Glock.

In theory, you are entirely right, but if something can go wrong, it'll be more likely to go wrong at a time where you are already stressed. I've tried DAO automatics, and they have their place, but I'm not sure that I'd want my primary handgun to be one. A decocking lever/safety like is on a Beretta seems best to me. You pay the price for the double action pull one time (thus requiring a more deliberate pull), but then deal with the situation as a single action automatic. Safe it when you are done shooting, and re-holster.

There are trade-offs no matter which way you go. A lot of people don't like cocked-and-locked, but a lot of other people do. I'm very much against carrying on an empty chamber. That is probably the safest way to carry, though. With some revolvers it is practically a necessity.

I haven't noticed it, but it wouldn't surprise me. To gun controllers, the answer to all of life's little problems is more gun control. And it is never enough. The strict laws passed by the NFA weren't enough to keep them from coming back and wanting more, even fifty years later.

For some time, we kept hearing that if 0bama didn't produce his birth certificate by Dec. 1st, the Supreme Court would declare his presidency unconstitutional.

Funny, but lately I haven't heard these guys building this story up, nor have I heard anything about 0bama being denied the presidency.

Guess they have to find a new delusion.

That because the powers behind the gun control movement recognize the same with we do. An armed population is able to resist tyranny. They used the fear of guns, and amp up the negatives to gain adherents to gun control agenda.

Conservative Justices are not retiring anytime soon. Young, men... the oldest is Scalia... good heath... next Thomas good health. The Bush appointees are young healthy men.
Supreme Court will block them

Kennedy isn't a conservative. He's the new version of Sandra Day O'Connor- Sticks his finger up to see which way the wind is blowing. There are only four true conservatives- Thomas, Roberts, Alito, and Scalia.
How the hell Bush 41 nominated Souter I'll never figure out. And Kennedy is no Robert Bork. Not even close.

775 Iron Fist  Tue, Dec 2, 2008 9:23:46pm

re: #659 jcm

I agree. To an extent, gun control would make me marginally safer. I am very, very good with a knife. I am well-rounded in unarmed combat as well. I am an adequate shot, but I'm no where near the league of people who are truly good with a gun.

To the extent that gun control would make it less likely for me to face a gun, it would at least appear to be in my favor. There are two problems with that logic. The first is that the mere presence of a firearm acts as a passive deterrent to hostile action. Just the threat of a firearm has gotten me out of a jam before (I actually didn't have a gun, but dude thought I did). The second problem to that idea is that no matter how good I am, I can be out numbered, or even face someone who is better than I am at hand to hand combat. A firearm can be used to escalate the forces involved to a point where, again, the situation defuses itself. When faced with possible death, sometimes people will back off. That is a better outcome than if I'm forced to fight and do serious bodily injury to my opponent.

That is all well and good when I am looking at me as the potential victim. My ex-wife was 4'11", weighed in at about a hundred pounds. Settling a confrontation with force would be virtually impossible for her without a gun to act as a force multiplier in her favor.

These points rest upon self-defense against common criminals. Defense against a corrupt and criminal State, or State ran organization is a whole new ball game. Firearms in the hands of civilians acts as a deterrent in this kind of situation where nothing else will. The citizens have to be willing to fight. The State will still likely have the preponderance of force, but they do not have the sole access to force. That crucial difference can create the space where non-violent solutions can be worked out. If the State has a monopoly on the mechanisms of force, it is much easier to run rough-shod over the rights of the citizens.

At all levels, gun control fails to really achieve what it is supposed to achieve, that is, less violence in society. Gun Control would still be wrong from a Civil Rights perspective even if it did lower violent crime rates. Thus, it is doubly damned in that it fails on all levels to deliver any real benefits, while running rough-shod over a fundamental right.

Looks like it sucks to live near a wind turbine in icy conditions.

[Link: www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk...]

Residents were left fearing for their safety after shards of melting ice fell on homes and gardens from the blades of a giant wind turbine.
For about four hours people in King's Dyke, Whittlesey, had to take cover as huge lumps – some two feet long – showered them from the 80 metre high tower on Saturday morning.

Resident Peter Randall, whose son's house lies a stone's throw away from the turbine, said: "Somebody is going to get killed. There was huge lumps of ice shooting off and landing everywhere.

"No one wants to leave the house because they are frightened and worried about the ice falling.

"My son's partner is pregnant and she is now worried sick about her unborn baby."

re: #775 Iron Fist

Bill Whittle.....

But understand this: 11,000 handgun deaths a year, over four years is very roughly 50,000 killed. In Nazi Germany, an unarmed population was unable to resist the abduction and murder of 6,000,000 people in a similar period: a number 120 times higher. Throw in the midnight murders of the Soviets, the Chinese, the various and sundry African and South American genocides and purges and political assassinations and that number grows to many hundreds, if not several thousand times more killings in unarmed populations.

[snip]

Here is my dry-eyed, cold-hearted, sad conclusion: I believe that the freedom, convenience and economic viability provided by the automobile is worth the 40,000 lives we lose to automotive deaths each year -- a number made more horrible by the fact that perhaps 40% are related to drunk driving and are therefore preventable.

By the same calculation, I accept that the freedoms entrusted to the people of the United States are worth the 11,000 lives we lose to gun violence each year.

I wish I could make both those numbers go away. I will support any reasonable campaign to make them as low as possible.

One takes ones thrills where one may. This is my busy week, working every night. Tomorrow night I am actually playing in a public venue. Don't know if I am allowed to post the name of the place. Have to read the rules.

I'd say as long as you don't post an address or phone number, you'll be okay, raw.

I've been getting the "sir" treatment an awful lot for the last few years. I am only thirty-fuckin-seven, for crying out loud! I am about this [.] close to knocking someone out.

854 USCMSNE  Tue, Dec 2, 2008 9:50:52pm

OT, but I guess this is a psuedo open thread...

I was bored tonight and decided to do a little research on the UAW. I went to the Dept. of Labor's website and looked up the UAW National Headquarters 2007 financial report. The Chairman, a gentleman named Ron Gettelfinger, made $163,075. Funny thing is, he was the third highest compensated employee. An attorney named Mike Mathis made $164,264 and an admin assistant named Judy Harden made $166,207. I'm scratching my head over that last one. Over 600 employees of the National Headquarters made six figures. The average salary of the UAW National Headquarters was hovering around $94,000. I'm not sure if these numbers include other bennies, like insurance, retirement, etc. Like I said, these are just the National Headquarters figures. There were reports for each local that I really don't care to dig through tonight. Now, I could really care less about how much they make. I think you should be paid what your worth to your organization. Nothing more, nothing less. I just find it hypocritical for a group who specializes in class envy and divisive politics to have such a large pay disparity between their white collar employees and their brothers on the floor. The UAW "Union Advantage" pamphlet for June 2008 says a private sector union worker makes $22.56 an hour (before overtime, retirement, etc).

There is a lot of good info on [Link: www.dol.gov...] Unfortunately, like all government websites you need to dig through mountains of crap before you get to the good stuff. By all means, look up your local information or double check what I found.

That (after reading) seemed a bit arrogant. Sorry.

Vocal ability (for me) takes very little discipline (which is, frankly, why I can do it).

The discipline of a musician (never a vocalist, IMHO) is frankly amazing to me.

Good research. My mom was a CPA and I remember 20+ years ago she told me about a local union official in Chicago that was making $300K+ and I was just a little old 2LT making about the equivalent of $10 bucks an hour.
I've never envied others their livelihood but jeez looeez that was hard to take, especially knowing that this fellow was no doubt a tribune (spit) of the little people and made his living stirring up the workers against management....

I just don't get it. Sure, over the last couple of years my hair has been jumping off my skull like rats from a burning ship, but almost none of it is gray. Most of my gray hair is on my face, which I sometimes shave. Sometimes. And I most certainly never dress nice enough to be considered a "sir".

Hell, ask some folks how old they think I am and they'll say I look much younger than my actual age.

/Granted, those folks are not tall enough to see the top of my thinning dome.
