I never saw a wild thing
Sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

R.I.P. Dan Kliman

We’ve just learned that Dan Kliman, a dedicated pro-Israel activist in San Francisco, and occasional zombietime contributor, was found dead yesterday at the bottom of an elevator shaft:...

Read the links in the article. Especially this one:

Daniel J. Kliman was found dead yesterday at the bottom of an elevator shaft in the building where he was taking Arabic classes. He is believed to have fallen down the elevator shaft on Tuesday evening 11/25/08.
There were no classes last week. There were very few people in the building at the time. The defective elevator was "secure".
It is still unclear how this happened.

Dan was supposed to fly to Israel last Thursday.

Dan was a founding member of San Francisco Voice for Israel, who tirelessly worked to promote a fair and balanced image for Israel in the Bay Area, regularly facing the threats and insults of anti-Semites and anti-Israel activists for several years.

Just between me and you, his death is very suspicious. Yet the police have declared it an accident are are apparently not investigating further.

If the cops don't investigate this further, they are just cowards afraid of where it may lead.

Alot of those sites typically charge a premium on bullion purchases- unless you're buying in large quantities. As interested as I am in precious metals, I don't really have enough money to buy hundreds of ounces of silver (or a minimum of 10 ounces of gold) up front.

Yeah, my spidy sense went off when I read that article. Most out of service elevators won't have the doors open. If they are some one is working on it, or there are heaps of barriers in front of it. In fact in all my experience in office buildings I have only seen one open elevator shaft. Just one, and that was while a technician was working in the bottom pit. I wonder what the cause of death was?

Rumour from a credible source says that Kliman was having an affair with an Arabic teacher at the school. A teacher of the male persuasion. Kliman was a lefty gay vegetarian bicyclist activist who campaigned against Prop 8, but had the sanity, moral clarity and courage to see the anti-Semitism that's infected the so-called progressive movement, and take it on.

re: #19 stevieray

Why was he there? Who lured him there?

That is the key question.

A detail really bothers me. It says in the first article I linked to,

Last Tuesday, a surveillance camera recorded Kliman waiting for the elevator in the lobby. It wasn’t clear, however, how he ended up in the elevator shaft or whether he fell from that floor or higher, Bernheim said.

...but if that's the case -- if the surveillance video shows him waiting for the elevator, wouldn't it show what happened next? Did it show him prying open the door and all by himself stepping unknowingly into an empty shaft? Or did it show him being pushed by someone else into the shaft? Or what? I mean, c'mon, that's the key clue.

It could simply be the case that the police have the tape in question, and aren't saying anything about what they see on the tape.

I also heard that rumor. It raised even more possibilities in my mind. But I decided not to mention it in the article, because I had no confirmation.

Kliman was a lefty gay vegetarian bicyclist activist who campaigned against Prop 8, but had the sanity, moral clarity and courage to see the anti-Semitism that's infected the so-called progressive movement, and take it on.

Yes, aside from being a pro-Israel activist, he was also a gay activist and an environmentalist. Which, in a sane world, should all make perfect sense in one individual.

Every single person with whom I have communicated about this thinks his death was not an accident.

World's Oldest Weed Dealer, Primo Stash Unearthed in China

Those medieval stoners sure got around. A light-haired Caucasian man with a huge stash of green buds over in China.

Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly ``cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

"To our knowledge, these investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a pharmacologically active agent," says the newly published paper, whose lead author was American neurologist Dr. Ethan B. Russo.

Remnants of cannabis have been found in ancient Egypt and other sites, and the substance has been referred to by authors such as the Greek historian Herodotus. But the tomb stash is the oldest so far that could be thoroughly tested for its properties.

The 18 researchers, most of them based in China, subjected the cannabis to a battery of tests, including carbon dating and genetic analysis [uh, hello, there's one sure way to test it! -- ed.]. Scientists also tried to germinate 100 of the seeds found in the cache, without success.

The marijuana was found to have a relatively high content of THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, but the sample was too old to determine a precise percentage.

Researchers also could not determine whether the cannabis was smoked or ingested, as there were no pipes or other clues in the tomb of the shaman, who was about 45 years old.

The large cache was contained in a leather basket and in a wooden bowl, and was likely meant to be used by the shaman in the afterlife.

"This materially is unequivocally cannabis, and no material has previously had this degree of analysis possible," Russo said in an interview from Missoula, Mont.

It could simply be the case that the police have the tape in question, and aren't saying anything about what they see on the tape.

But if everyone is suspicious that he was murdered, and the cops have solid evidence that it was an accident, then why don't they just announce that they have video proof it was an accident? Why leave the entire pro-Israel and other activist communities believing something fishy happened?

Very odd behavior on the police's part.

However, this may explain it: I also heard a rumor that federal investigators from OSHA are now investigating the scene, and may have told the SF cops to clam up. OSHA needs to make absolutely sure that broken elevator sliding doors aren't just hanging open; it would be a major public safety hazard.

More info is sure to come out.

Thanks. Interesting. Noticed the "No" sticker in the photo of him at Zomblog and figured (since it was a pride event) that he was gay. Not sure if it would make any difference especially in SF - not like the old days were being outed would figure as a motive in a crime.

Ahhh yes - transportation via the leather express.

I miss those cadences. Took some scouts on a 18 mile hike on Catalina a few years ago, which we did in one push. Got them to sing cadences to keep them moving at a pace. Mild, age appropriate ones. Like "My girl's a New York girl." Worked great - they all made the hike and passed other troops on the way. Kids had fun and were proud of what they did.

A month later I had a mom confront me for "militarizing" her kid.

America, Watch and Learn

I don't get it. The American auto industry is failing. For whatever reasons, they can no longer make a profit. Note that people still want cars ... It's just that not as many want American cars as foreign cars, since foreign cars are known for being better. However, some do actually want American cars -- but the American car companies happen to be poorly run. Plus, they are hampered by all kinds of regulations and government-supported union rules that competing, foreign companies are not hampered by.

I get all this. What I don't get is why or how pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into these companies is suddenly going to make them profitable. I understand that those who now control Washington don't really care about profit. In fact, they got elected telling people that profit and capitalism are largely bad. What these politicians do care about are the labor unions. How labor unions are supposed to survive without profit generated by capitalism is anybody's guess. The politicians also care about forcing automakers to manufacture environmentally friendly cars. If they bail out the auto companies, it's easier to force them to do this. Yet, if environmentally friendly cars don't sell when private capitalists own GM and Ford, then why will they suddenly start to sell when the government takes over GM and Ford? No answer is given because the question is never asked. Why is the question never asked?

The premise beneath all this is simple: Government officials think they are smarter and more capable than capitalists. They think they're much more moral too. If this were true, America should have abandoned capitalism (or what's left of it) a long time ago. Instead, America has held on to capitalism more tenaciously than most. In the process, America got a lot more done.

I may end up wrong, but I have a funny feeling that the American automakers are going to get their billions (or is it trillions?) in taxpayer dollars. For all practical purposes, the U.S. government will own them. This will be an example of all out socialism right here in the USA. Socialized cars. Government officials will get their chance to show how much more competent, and how much more virtuous, they supposedly are. America, watch and learn.

106 zombie  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 12:55:57am

Disgusting but predictable.

The anti-Semites are out again at the S.F. Chronicle, saying (in code) "the loud-mouthed Jew asked for it" in the comments section to this article about Dan's death:

The more I learn about this man, the more I'm convinced that his politics resulted in his demise. "Whenever he was in the room, he was such a huge presence." He sounds like he intimidated people who disagreed with him, and he violently screamed in their faces due to his passion over the issue of Israel's existence and policies. People who allow their passion to become out of control are only asking for it. In my opinion. Remember "bigots" goes both ways. Look it up.

Unbelievable.

107 zombie  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 12:59:18am

Also, the Nazis over at Vanguard News Network -- the ideological twins of the anti-Semitic Left in San Francisco, whether either side wants to admit it or not -- have a thread blaming the "jew fag" for his own death. No linkee (links to Nazi sites forbidden here, and rightly so), but you can use your imagination.

Anybody who pissed off the communists and the Nazis is alright in my book.

If you look at the full comment thread at the SF Chronicle, about half the comments are being deleted almost immediately, and from the references to the deletions in other comments, it seems that most of them are anti-Israel rants and/or are expressing satisfaction at Dan's demise.

Under the very thin veneer of "tolerance" and "acceptance," this city is sick, sick, sick.

119 zombie  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 1:25:14am

Ah, here's another gem of a comment at the SF Chronicle:

This is a tragedy that shouldn't have happened. That said, his death may save lives, since Israel murders Palestinians as a matter of policy.

...and still another:

Very serious Karma, indeed.

I don't even want to think about what the deleted comments must be like.

120 zombie  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 1:30:13am

And the hits just keep on comin' from the SF Chronicle commenters:

This was clearly an accident, he wasn't important enough to kill.

...and...

Was this dude drinking? What was his blood alcohol levels. How much did his brain weigh at the autopsy?

And these are just the comments that got approved and not deleted!

The problem is, in our right wing, profit driven, info-tainment media that has been cowed into submission by corporations and powerful lobby groups like AIPAC, israel is made out to look like the pooor victim in mainstream media, when, in truth, israel is an apartheid oppressor. Yea- I had some fairly recent Africa guidebooks checked out of the library (2006) that quoted the exchange rate as being 6.50 to US$1.

Ouch, that hurts. This time last year the Canadian dollar was worth $1.10 American. Now it's back down to $0.80.

re: #179 BlueCanuck

Not sure if I told you this, but I was talking with some middle-aged Canadian tourists at a bar this summer. I jokingly asked if they were going to pay in greenbacks or loonies, since the difference was still pretty minimal at the time. I thought for sure either one of them would tell me how much they love going to the states now that the loonie could buy so much more, but the guy actually seemed disappointed.

He explained his disappointment by saying something along the lines of 'Every time the greenback loses value, everybody across the board ends up paying more for oil' and inferred that he'd gladly go back to the old US$/C$ exchange rates if it meant he could pay less for oil either here or back in Canada...

Looks like he got at least part of his wish.

/could you just scream?!

I've tried on a mac and PC also. Firefox and AOL on the PC, Firefox and Safari on the mac.

It IS the site...for SOME people. Maybe the posters who are there were there before it went blogglewankie (?)

What I did was go to "more options" over the search function and plug in various posters, today's date and "comments". I can see some of the posters, but I can't get into the thread.

Good morning littleoldlady, pat, ggt, EVERYONE. I am currently using IE6 with no problems.

The Left have always been about violence. Always, going back to the French Revolution. Some of them are more circumspect than others, but once you get past the veneer of, not even civility, really, but of narcissistic "I'm so good" bullshit, they are all about mass graves, real torture, and totalitarian control.

They don't really try to hide it very much. If the media weren't their bitch, a few good reporters could blow their facade up at any given time. As it is, their agenda is quite transparent if a person just looks at the outcomes that they produce, rather than the fluffy pink goodness they profess. It's like the Weather Underground, robbing banks and planning genocide in the name of "peace". By which, they mean totalitarian control by them, and enslavement for the rest of society "for their own good".

I was teaching a TaeKwonDo class and the rule was if you were late you stood at the door and asked "Permission to join the classs?” when the instructor acknowledged you. The instructor would say "10 push-ups and join the last line." It was standard rote and would teach there are consequences. So one day we go through the above and the Mom says "He doesn't have to do push-ups because it was my fault he was late." I said "Yes ma'am” and turned to the kid and said "Give me 10 push-ups ...etc" So she gets upset and said "I TOLD YOU IT WAS MY FAULT!" So I asked her if she wanted to do the 10 push-ups as well. She stormed off and complained to my Master. He never said a word to me about it. Parents can be a pain in the a$$.

We can't stand to see our kids punished unfairly. What she should have done was told the kid, "even if it's unfair, - do it - you can handle it." And then make it up to the kid later for not having her act together and teaching them that kids are made to suffer when we parents don't have out acts together.

You know, a well-placed kick does wonders in the computer world. On computers, and management. :D

Kicking used to really work, disk drives would lock up with stiction and a kick would jar the heads loose.

GOOD MORNING !
What happened to the site. For hours this morning all I got was the LGF side bar ID and the PJM advert on the top of the front page.
That was all that would load.

I sure am glad to see the doors finally opened.
It was getting pretty darned cold waiting out here Charles.
Where's the coffee...I've got to get warmed up....

My reaction would have been to do the push ups with my kid. He had to meet the requirements of the class, and my doing the push ups would be accepting the responsibility for making him late.

I think that was a case where the database server was down. Charles has the database sitting on a different machine, so it's possible for the site to be up but no articles or comments to be available.

Wild Thing fun fact:

This was written by a songwriter named Chip Taylor, who has made tons of money from it because it has been recorded by many artists and is constantly being used in movies and TV shows. Taylor used a lot of this money to gamble - for years he bet about $10,000 a day and was kicked out of every casino in Las Vegas for card counting. He also wrote "Angel Of The Morning," which was a hit for Merrilee Rush in 1968. Taylor is the brother of actor Jon Voight and the uncle of Angelina Jolie.

An Idea whose time has come...

Business was — you might say — booming this past weekend, as the state’s first sales tax-free weekend attracted throngs to gun shops.

Next up: subsidizing firearms for those who are to poor to buy their own. I want an M-240. I know where I can get a semi-automatic version. It's only $13,500. See, I need a subsidy. Or a bailout. I'd take a bailout if they'd give it to me :-)
298 razorbacker  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 7:37:57am

I don't know if this says anything at all about the state of retail in today's America, but...

She'd bought a down comforter, and so, as night follows day, she decided that what was now needed was a flannel duvet (I didn't know either. It evidently is an overcoat for your comforter.)

Eddie Bauer had the very thing, but it was pricey, so she gathered up her 20% off coupon and went to Bed Bath & Beyond. They didn't have it in stock, but did have it online. Online not eligible for coupons, plus there is the shipping charge.

So she goes to the clerk and says that she wants the duvet ordered for her, she wants the coupon honored, and she doesn't want to pay shipping. The clerk says no problem, types a few moments, and presto! order placed. She asks clerk when she can pick it up and clerk says I've ordered it shipped to your house.

Moral of the story seems to be that retail price is no longer the final price, that we now can bargain like we're at the flea market.

I suspect the kid was at fault and mom was covering (you get to know the kids and the parents traits) -- but it didn't matter -- no need to make excuses. I was late at times and the drill was the same for me. We had doctors late because they were performing surgery. The drill was the same. And it isn't punishment, it is a lesson -- there are consequences to consider and we all have to face them, even if it is beyond your control. So you face them and move on.

Say what you will about Barack Obama, he's probably the greatest firearms salesman in American history.

re: #301 Occasional Reader

Bill Clinton was real good at it, too. But I've never seen things like they are today. You may have seen my post last night, but last night I went to Wal Mart in search of ammo. They were out of just about everything. The woman running the counter said that they were backordered and they didn't expect to get much, if any, until early next year. They had one box of .223, and they wanted $25 for 20 rounds. Just three weeks ago you could get 200 rounds of 55gr. JHPs for $70.

Hopefully, none of this is necessary. But if I had the money I'd buy one of those Microtech AUGs and a Sig 556. If Obama reintroduces the AW ban, those two will at least double in price.

303 MikeAlv77  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 8:22:30am

Saw this loacally and it was amazing. Went to a local gun shop on the way home last night to get some ammo. They had plenty but what was interesting was that in the 10 minutes I was there is that they sold 2 handguns... Guy told me Obama getting elected is the best thing for his business.. People are buying guns like crazy he told me!

Rudy, Palin and a few others were out there helping him. Maybe folks got scared of the idea of a filibuster proof congress.

Hey, I know it was yesterday, but I still want to celebrate!

I call this a Chambliss endorsement for Palin 2012, do you?

He also said (not on this video), "I can’t overstate the impact she had down here."
