This isn't a black market gun. While people living in caves in Afghanistan can and do manufacture Kalashnikovs by hand, the MP5 is a sophisticated weapon requiring high tech metallurgy and other technologies for their production.

Hate disappoint Mick Stockinger, MP5s can be had as can anything up to a T-72 tank on the black market. It's a matter of connections and money.

Also provenance on the photo? All the pics of the bad guys they had AK's, is that a photo of Indian security force MP5s during a break?

This email just arrived from a friend who got it from CAIR (don't ask) -- so did any of you lizards see this "anti-homophobia" Simpsons episode last Sunday? I gave up on the Simpsons after its egregious election episode. I'm glad the show jumped the shark a long time ago and attracts far few viewers than in its heyday.

THANK FOX FOR 'SIMPSONS' EPISODE CHALLENGING ISLAMOPHOBIA

(LOS ANGELES, CA, 12/3/08) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on American Muslims and other people of conscience to thank the Fox television network and the creator of "The Simpsons" for a recent episode that used comedy to challenge Islamophobia.

The episode, which aired Sunday evening and is titled "Mypods and Boomsticks," highlights anti-Muslim sentiment by featuring a young Muslim character named Bashir and his family who face prejudice after moving to Springfield. In the program, Homer Simpson wrongly suspects that Bashir's family is involved in a terror plot. Bart Simpson befriends Bashir and defends him from bullies.

CAIR's Greater Los Angeles Area office (CAIR-LA) sent a letter today to the show's creator Matt Groening thanking him for challenging anti-Muslim prejudice.

The letter said Sunday's episode "brought to light how Americans can work toward mutual respect and inclusion by getting to know their neighbors." It went on to state: "The episode also builds on the values that have made America the great nation it is a nation in which citizenship is about finding common ground and building a better society. American Muslims have been doing just that by making daily contributions to our society that often go unrecognized."

"Because of its acceptance in popular culture, comedy is often one of the best vehicles for challenging stereotypes and intolerance," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad. "Fox and Matt Groening are to be congratulated for tackling the disturbing phenomenon of Islamophobia."

ACTION REQUESTED:

Send a message expressing appreciation for highlighting both anti-Muslim attitudes and the need for mutual respect and inclusion in our society.

Good one.

As long as we're on the "Midnight" theme, here's the classic "Celery Stalks at Midnight."

Wow, I haven't heard that in years. A total classic. Brings back memories of a fascinating era I never experienced! (U.S. in the early '40s before Pearl Harbor -- a very brief dream era.)

This is one nasty plant...

The base of a triffid is a large muscle-like root mass comprising many thick tentacles. When dormant/docile, these tentacles are rooted into the ground and are used to draw nutrients, as with a normal plant. When active, triffids use these tentacles to propel themselves along at a moderate walking pace. They are capable of moving faster over open ground. Triffids' roots/tentacles are sufficiently articulate to allow them to climb stairs, and strong enough to allow them to push through fencing. They are not, however, prehensile enough to allow them to use tools.

The trunk of a triffid is several inches thick and resembles a sprouting leek. It is thickest close to the head and the base, and tapers off in the middle. A triffid's neck can range from a few feet in height to around two metres. It has leaf-like foliage where it meets the base of the triffid.

The upper part of a triffid can be referred to as the head, although it does not contain the usual sensory organs associated with an animal's head. It consists of a brightly colored, hollow, flower like aperture that resembles the top of a Heliamphora or Darlingtonia californica. The head houses a triffid's sting. The flower also contains a mucilage type liquid which is seen ensnaring insects, although other purposes are unknown.

A triffid's sting is a flat paddle-like appendage on a flexible stalk that protrudes from the head of a triffid like a stamen or tongue. When attacking, a triffid will lash out at its target using its sting, primarily aiming for its prey's face or head, and with considerable speed and force. The sting leaves behind a distinctive rectangular welt with linear cuts running along it. Often traces of dark green triffid venom are visible in the wound.

Triffid venom is fast-acting and can fell a victim almost instantly.

re: #151 Alaska Kim

I have no idea how that works. But I was out for a walk and I stopped in my tracks to watch them. I bet I stood there for 45 minutes.

From wiki:

Aurorae are produced by the collision of charged particles from Earth's magnetosphere, mostly electrons but also protons and heavier particles, with atoms and molecules of Earth's upper atmosphere (at altitudes above 80 km (50 miles)).
. . .
The collisions in the atmosphere electronically excite atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere. The excitation energy can be lost by light emission or collisions. Most aurorae are green and red emissions from atomic oxygen. Molecular nitrogen and nitrogen ions produce some low level red and very high blue/violet aurorae. The light blue and green colors are produced by ionic nitrogen and the neutral nitrogen gives off the red and purple color with the rippled edges. Different gases interacting with the upper atmosphere will produce different colors, caused by the different compounds of oxygen and nitrogen. The level of solar wind activity from the Sun can also influence the color of the aurorae.

They would never do that to Arabs because of the religious connotations, and "humiliation", that they would be accused of.

Pretty cool SIMS 2 version of ''The Telephone Hour'' from Bye Bye, Birdie. (The audio must be from the original Broadway cast soundtrack, or a revival thereof, but not the Ann-Margret movie version -- you can tell because there were some minor changes in the names used. Broadway's two-syllable "Helen" becomes the ill-fitting three-syllable "Ursula" for no logical reason.)

The cordless telephones and Nautilus weight machines are pretty funny, since whoever created this otherwise did a commendable job finding period costumes and furnishings from the available SIMS graphics.

Also, those weapons don't look like they went through a multi-day skirmish... on the losing side anyway.

The bad guys had to hump all there ammo in. Would they hump in ammo for two different weapon systems? AK and MP5? I don't think so. Keep it simple, one ammo type, we already know they had AKs for sure, that means they packed in 7.62x39.

Unless there was a cache somewhere near or in the targets. In that case India's got a bigger problem internally than Pakistan externally.

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;

Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

I have planted morning glories everywhere I have lived because I just love them. They have never come up.

A friend who sent me a lot of those chain emails - the ones if you don't email this to 20 people an angel will cry type of stuff. I just deleted most of them.

Anyway one morning she sent one that said I would receive something I had always wanted within the next five minutes.

Finished with my am emails, I went into my back yard to say my morning thanks and prayers.
There on my fence was one lone fabulous morning glory in full bloom.
I have never seen another since that day.

re: #269 Soona'

I won't either Soona'. They have taken on too many left fringe community programs and projects with their funding in my area. They raise a million here taken as payroll direct deductions from the local hospital, clinics, and industry employees.
The funds are paying for 6 fulltime office staff, that are served by a huge volunteer sorkforce group to actually conduct and canvass for the fund drives. They all make above standard salaries with benefits, and they sit at their desks all day and write and assist in the writing of grants which are submitted to the state and fed. gov. for additional fundings.
The money that is returned to actual programs or projects is negligible to the enhance of the community.

More change you can believe in:

Possible Obama pick linked to drug dealer granted clemency by Clinton

WASHINGTON -The California congressman in discussions with President-elect Barack Obama to become U.S. trade representative played a role in President Bill Clinton’s commuting the prison sentence of a cocaine dealer.

The cocaine dealer’s family had made $15,000 in political donations to the congressman and hired Clinton’s brother-in-law for $200,000 to help free Carlos Vignali.

The case involving Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., marks the second time the 7-year-old controversy over Clinton’s final actions has surfaced as Obama organizes his new administration. Republicans earlier resurrected the role of Eric Holder, Obama’s pick for attorney general, in the pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich, who won a pardon on Clinton’s last day in office.

When I was in Alabama for my son's wedding, I went to the upscale mall that was attached to the hotel we were staying at. There were some kiosks run by Israelis. We started chatting, I ended up buying some products from them and they came to my son's wedding.

What people don't understand about these kiosks is that you don't have to pay the price they quote you. That's their highball opening bid. I sell deadsea products on my website so I know what this stuff is supposed to cost. If I can buy it cheaper at these kiosks, that's win-win.

I
would think "Polar Beer," with a guess-what on the label, would be big

"Northern Lite" could be made with real glacier water, and a pic of the Aurora Borealis on the label.

Oh, the possibilities.

Caribooze is good!

LOL. Ticking clocks make me think of Peter Pan and biological clocks make me think of Marissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny.

You've never heard of grits?

409 Spare O'Lake  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 3:32:35pm

Gotta run.
Is it safe to turn this thing off or do we have to let it cool down for a while?

does he like her?

He didn't really say but I don't think he DISLIKES her. I think he's just happy that I'm happy with her.

Well with the exception of foreign policy, I'm almost glad a Republican didn't win - this economy is going to hell in a basket!

Mk, time for me to shove off to my room and relax before I head to bed. Night all

re: #302 Alouette

Those pushy, aggressive Jews, forcing shoppers to buy stuff at the mall.

Huh. They haven't met the right Americans yet.

Wholesalers say cart operators have tried hiring Americans to staff carts, but they lacked the art of the hustle -- too polite to move the merchandise, especially for 12 hours straight.

Aggressive sales are what it takes if you want to sell stuff in a non-traditional setting like kiosks, flea-markets, or cold sales door to door. I've done all three and made money at it. Meek people with no gift of gab need not apply. lol

Yes, well, if it weren't for a certain Jew, there would be NO CHRISTMAS!

re: #264 Alaska Kim

No, it's next door to the Great Alaska Bush Company.

"Bush" and "Glory Hole"? I think we're talking about very different target markets, here.

(Although, to follow that tangent a little, one of the funnier sight gags in John Waters' Desperate Living* involves a "lesbian glory hole" in a women's restroom stall -- a triangular hole at waist level and two circular openings at chest level.)

* Which is definitely part of Waters' "early" Pink Flamingos era, not his "later" era that began with 1988's Hairspray -- and thus recommendable only if you more or less enjoyed Pink Flamingos.

Btw, some guys invented a cool (and free) software, which makes an easy 3D-Scanner for everybody. All you basically need is a (web)-cam and a cheap hand-held line laser:

re: #63 nyc redneck

morning glory seeds must be pricked w/ a knife and soaked over night to germinate. try that. they should come up.

It's all about the danger with you.

sorry, but i hate Morning Glorys... nasty plant: we call it blue kudzu for it's propensity to cover everything over, killing and burying the other vines & trees in the yard.
