Wednesday Night Load Averages

Science | Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 6:33:33 pm PST

With the new web server installed and configured, at peak traffic time today with more 3,000 visitors online, the load average never got above 0.87. Typical load average for that kind of activity with our previous, somewhat underpowered web server was in the neighborhood of 4 to 6.

Big win. That’s the kind of worth-the-work-and-expense percentage we like.

In case you’re not already confused enough, here’s a link explaining the Linux ‘top’ command’s load average statistics: Examining Load Average.

The three load-average values in the first line of top output are the 1-minute, 5-minute and 15-minute average. (These values also are displayed by other commands, such as uptime, not only top.) That means, reading from left to right, one can examine the aging trend and/or duration of the particular system state. The state in question is CPU load—not to be confused with CPU percentage. In fact, it is precisely the CPU load that is measured, because load averages do not include any processes or threads waiting on I/O, networking, databases or anything else not demanding the CPU. It narrowly focuses on what is actively demanding CPU time. This differs greatly from the CPU percentage. The CPU percentage is the amount of a time interval (that is, the sampling interval) that the system’s processes were found to be active on the CPU. If top reports that your program is taking 45% CPU, 45% of the samples taken by top found your process active on the CPU. The rest of the time your application was in a wait. (It is important to remember that a CPU is a discrete state machine. It really can be at only 100%, executing an instruction, or at 0%, waiting for something to do. There is no such thing as using 45% of a CPU. The CPU percentage is a function of time.) However, it is likely that your application’s rest periods include waiting to be dispatched on a CPU and not on external devices. That part of the wait percentage is then very relevant to understanding your overall CPU usage pattern.

The load averages differ from CPU percentage in two significant ways: 1) load averages measure the trend in CPU utilization not only an instantaneous snapshot, as does percentage, and 2) load averages include all demand for the CPU not only how much was active at the time of measurement.

In the good ol' days when i lived breathed and pooped IT .. i created a machine with a button pinched from an arcade console. You know .. its big and red and it had absolutely NOTHING TO DO with the server ... but if you pressed it the server went into a rendition of the robot from LOST IN SPACE .. repeating the line DANGER WILL ROBINSON .. DANGER .......

Ok .. was away on a much needed break .. and .. of course the head of the company decided to come in and plucky guy that he is .. he wanted to check stats. Of course .. seeing a big red button .. he pushed it .. and i got a call .. OMG the system is down .. i pushed a button and now its given me a warning .. OH NO and you are so far away .. we need you !

I asked him which button he pushed and what it said. It was very hard to keep a straight face over the phone and sound serious. I told him to get the 2IC to look it over and make sure it was ok.

Moral of this story. NEVER stick a big red button on a server. People are destined to press it.

25 years ago at 'me new job we were in a corridor with a big red button that no one knew what it did, 'me mates suggested I push it and find out. Poor decision on my part and I pushed the button. Immediately loud alarms came from the computer room. Further investigation revealed I had pushed the "emergency stop" button for the county mainframe. IBM had to come out and reset every device in the computer room. The System was down for two hours. My mates stuck up for me and my director simply told me "If you push that button again I'll fire 'ye!" I agreed whole-heartedly and that was an interesting and stupid start of my IT career.
/Can anyone top that for stupidity? And still keep their job? I did a few other things along the way, none as traumatic as that one...

Hhoooooo yeah. The Maori Battalion were a much feared force. The boss, one lieutenant Colonel Awatere was known to deal with issues of discipline by taking the chap out the back and giving him a "smack down"

They also got into trouble with the Nazis for their oft "take no prisoners" policy when advancing on a position.

Running RBase and cranking right along when I thought to myself, "We're on local generator here, which might die at any time, so I'd better save this-" and reached for the keys,

...when there was a knock on my door, we lost all power, and a guy stuck his head in to say, "We'll lose power in a few- oh! We've LOST power... oh. You know?" and ducked back out.

Save frequently, all work worth doing, in progress...

This evening, the futures are pointing down slightly while the Nikkei is up 49 points and the Hang Seng is up 262.

The Big 3 auto makers are now looking for a total of about $34 billion from the taxpayers. Chrysler really did not want to provide much information as they are a privately held firm. I don't think that will go over real well in D.C.

My guess is the auto makers will get some "loans" to string this along for a few months tha may or may not ever be paid back.

So far, they do not have the votes in the Senate to pass it, thankfully. Let'em file for bankruptcy protection and reorganize, including renegotiating their ridiculous contract with the UAW. If this passes it will be a bailout for the union.

The song has barely been aired in the UK for fear of upsetting listeners.

You are the reside Wall Streeter.....what are your investments? I do not specifics, but what is safe these days? Anything?

Great question. First, there are no safe havens. You can protect yourself from losses by placing a put and call option collar around your investments to limit your downside. But those options cost as well.

Other than that, you can take advantage of time. I have my portfolio set up so that any money I might need to access in 5 years or less, I have set up in a ladder structure of insured CD's, timed to mature about every six months. In that way, when something matures I just roll it over to 5 years out. So I have cash coming available every 6 months in case I need it and I'm constantly earning a 5 year rate that is insured.

Money that I can lock up for longer than 5 years I have in a well diversified portfolio. So, while the portfolio has lost market value during all this, I really don't care at the moment cause I'm holding for a long term and I know over time the market will come back and I will get that value back over time.

And I'm actually dollar cost averaging in right now on a 60%-40% equity to fixed basis, and buying up some bargains.

Person Who Will Lose a Lot of Money in GM Bankrupcy Says that GM Bankrupcy Would Be Bad

Via the AZ Republic:

Fritz Henderson, president and chief operating officer of GM, said that choosing the bankruptcy route would further erode consumer confidence in the automaker and "we want them to be confident in their ability to buy our cars and trucks."

In order to save the value of their executive stock portfolios, which are a large part of their compensation, auto executives are promoting the line now that consumers will for some reason stop buying GM cars if the company is operating under Chapter 11 protection.

The auto-makers real strategy is to get some kind of money, almost any amount will do, from the government ASAP. It really doesn't matter how much, because with their cash burn rate almost any amount Congress gives them right now will not last much more than 6 months, and certainly will not be enough to reach recovery (their requests go up by a few billion each time they appear in front of Congress). Automakers are facing potentially several years of recession, and any real restructuring would take 5 years or more (and even that is doubtful since the industry has had 30 years of notice on these issues and have not done anything). But if they get some cash, then there will be a psychological pull for Congress to put in more. They will say -- well, you've already put in $5 billion. If you don't put in another X billion, that first 5 will have been wasted (few people understand that "sunk costs are sunk" and Congress is no exception). This is how expensive transit projects are funded.

The position that customers will stop buying the product due to some loss of confidence in chapter 11 doesn't hold up. Most every airline traveler has flown on an airline operating under chapter 11 in the last 10 years or so, and if I can have enough confidence that an aircraft is being adequately maintained in bankruptcy, I can probably muster the courage to buy a car. I presume the issue here is downstream warranty support. But this is about the last thing that would ever be slashed in a chapter 11. For God sakes, airlines have never even substantially disavowed frequent flier miles in a bankruptcy, surely a much more obvious target than warranty repairs.

I would argue that it is uncertainty that is driving any loss of confidence (in fact, sales have plummeted already, ahead of any chapter 11). A chapter 11 filing would actually increase certainty, as those running the receivership could quickly communicate principles to be followed in the bankruptcy, such as protection of warranties. Right now, people have a perception that in a bankruptcy, GM would go *poof*. Once it actually files a chapter 11, the media and executives would switch modes from fanning panic to actually explaining how receivership works.

In fact, if there is any fear on the issue of long-term warranty support, it is being created by executives like Henderson who are fanning the flames of fear in a brinkmanship game to try to avoid chapter 11. If he were really worried about this loss of confidence, he and other auto executives would be out there assuring people that their cars and servicing and dealers will also survive a chapter 11 filing. But he is not. This is totally disingenuous.

For what it's worth - sell the muts and go 100% indexed. Take the tax write off.

The Muts cost you 1.5 to 3% a year - 20 years that's 30 - 60% plus taxes - and you take 100% of the downside risk - great deal for your "advisor" who takes no risk and skims off of your principal every cycle.

I couldn't quit tell you, except that I've been doing a lot of mindless housework today, so my mind has wandered. I am a bit uneasy about the state of our country. I'm a bit uneasy about the 2nd Amendment being decimated. I'm also a bit uneasy about Barry's dream of an internal "militia," or whatever. All things totaled, I think I'd rather "have" than "not have" at this particular moment in time.

I wouldn't worry much about that last one. I worry somewhat about the middle one, and somewhat about the first.

But it's also just a good "life skill", knowing how to operate a firearm competently (better still, various firearms). You just never know.

From the article:

Dearborn Heights Police said the man and his son were on their way to the gun range when he took the clip out, but there was still a bullet in the chamber.

Somewhat ironic. In a news report about firearms ignorance, the reporter displays firearms ignorance.

If I had to guess...and it is only a guess, it is because it appeals to what a victim, loser, needs. (that is not to say that all Muslims are either victims, or losers. I am only answering your question).

Islam puts them in the "right" group, with the "ultimate truth". It makes them better than those perceived white power structures of Christianity, and Judaism, and excuses their violent tendencies.

It takes what is already there, gives them hope, gives them power, and channels their instinct.

Start with a basic safety class, one which includes range familiarization. The spend the time and money to rent a variety of weapons and get a feel for the different calibers and types. Also it's worth it the first few outings to pay for one on one instruction if you do have an experience friend.

Weapons: what you are comfortable with is most important. Not caliber or brand, which ones are the easiest for you.

I recommend a basic arsenal if you have the budget, a handgun, a shotgun and rifle. The three give you the complete tool kit.

Yeah, but we're careful about how much we advance, usually no more than 125% of their monthly average credit card receipts. And it costs more than a loan.
On a $50K advance, they'd re-pay us about $3-4K more than a conventional loan.
But like I said, there is no personal guarantee and no set monthly payment like regular loans have, so even if they have a slow month, we still take the same percentage, whereas a bank would want their monthly payment even if business was down.

Absolutely, I think that's from way back when Microsoft developed Windows and had an easier interface than Macs. But now with the new Intel ones, it's just, go do your things and enjoy the speed and no hassle. I also love the fact that Macs are not talking back to you all the time ( do you really want to do this?) feels like your computer takes you as an adult, who knows what he wants........

Just wondering- What does your nic mean? You can tell me once, though.

From Lewis Carroll's The Hunting Of The Snark, also mentioned in the old scifi book "Stand on Zanzibar".

"Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.

"Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What i tell you three times is true."

When I was still in college, and mainframe memory was $1,000,000 per megabyte (that's about $10m in current dollars), friend of mine at IBM was assigned to find ways to make the mainframe database system run better in 100k of RAM - and that was 2 microsecond core memory, my friends.

So, 640k of 150ns RAM, for just me alone, I'm just saying, that's a lot!

Which reminds me of this picture.

For that matter, I am again going to publically thank George W. Bush for keeping us safe from Terrorists attacks after 9/11.
Hell, I don't think Obama's got the courage to even face down the Big 3.

565 NomadOfNorad  Wed, Dec 3, 2008 10:15:54pm

Well, on the subject of new turntables.... I recently got a catalog in the mail from some outfit called Heartland America, in about 50 pages, they had 5 different models of turntable, or stereo systems with turntables in them. Two of the just-plain-turntable models were USB, including one that was a nice, retro, wooden-cased thing.

Somewhere else recently (cannot remember where), I saw a system like one of those old style portable record players from perhaps the 60s, the kind with the rounded corners. It would also work as a USB turntable OR as a regular, stand-alone record player.

Tell us more if you can.

It seemed easiest to add these links.
The method can be used in both industrial and medical non-destructive testing. You can get a 3D image of the internal interfaces of an objective and create a picture somewhat like a sonogram at the doc's office to look at a baby before it is born. That is currently being done with more traditional ultrasonics though.

Holography
holography (hŏlŏg`rəfē, hō–), method of reproducing a three-dimensional image of an object by means of light wave patterns recorded on a photographic plate or film. Holography is sometimes called lensless photography because no lenses are used to form the image. The plate or film with the recorded wave patterns is called a hologram. The light used to make a hologram must be coherent, i.e. of a single wavelength or frequency and with all the waves in phase. (A coherent beam of light can be produced by a laser laser [acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation], device for the creation, amplification, and transmission of a narrow, intense beam of coherent light .
..... Click the link for more information. .)

Accoustic Holography

Acoustical holography
The recording of sound waves in a two-dimensional pattern (the hologram) and the use of the hologram to reconstruct the entire sound field throughout a three-dimensional region of space. Acoustical holography is an outgrowth of optical holography, invented by Dennis Gabor in 1948. The wave nature of both light and sound make holography possible. Acoustical holography involves reconstruction of the sound field that arises due to radiation of sound at a boundary, such as the vibrating body of a violin, the fuselage of an aircraft, or the surface of a submarine.

The people at NKP would get the sensor data and pass it on to HQ who would do the actual targeting. Down at my level I would get the frag order for what load and delay options to load on what plane. At the maint control level I had the option of which spare to use for what load. And that depended on what spares I was given and what the maint status of that spare was. Of course, this was co-ordinated with the line controllers and the maint control officer.

Sweet dreams!

I have not posted much since the massacre in Mumbai, as it is nearly too hard to cope with.

I was a child, safe in the USA, during WWII, and have lived through so many wars, but this planned attack, torture and ultimately, a massacre, by terrorists on a Jewish family, doing good for people, who personally lost so much, as young as they were (28 and 29)...a child, (son zt"l) died of Tay Sachs, and another son, also with Tay Sachs (Moshe is now, thank God, past the age that he would have been diagnosed) is in a hospital in Israel, with the same fatal genetic disease, cannot be cared for at home..and the mother was 6 months pregnant?

How do you plot a massacre and target Chabad, where they knew there were Jews, and a little boy, Moshe, who's second birthday was the Saturday, the day after his parents HY"D were slaughtered? How? And the other Jews who died, along with so many Indians, and also some other foreigners?

Now there is a 2 year old toddler, Moshe, who is almost 3 months younger, to the day, than our youngest grandchild, a boy, and who's screams of 'Ima! Ima! Ima!' (Mummy) have been in my head since they had the first tape. He was with them when they were slaughtered with malice, hate, and an anti-Semitism that still is alive all over the world, that he experienced in the most horrific of ways? I have no idea what he may have retained in his brain...

May G-d bless his brave Nanny...she is a heroine, and is probably the only familiar face he sees now, in Israel, as his maternal grandparents are Israeli, and I do not know if they had been to India before this tragedy.

And the Indian government a year ago October...and did nothing. Nothing.

May all those who died at they hands of these cult of islam terrorists rest in peace, and may the single living monster die a death befitting what he did, and be wrapped in pigskin, and rot in hell along with his fellow monsters.

When we see our 3 grandchildren, we will hold them extra tight, and hope that they will never know of a tragedy like this one.

How can anyone call the cult of islam a 'religion'? It is the antithesis of a religion.

G'nite, all....I am not including a video I have of this precious child and those who also are mourning...many have already seen it. I cannot look at it now, but will save it as a reminder that 2008 in some ways is no different than the late 1930's and 1945...Jew hate has never gone away.

Without a place like LGF? I don't know where we who are Jewish could find a safer, more caring community.

Charles, thank you so very much.

I am going to try and sleep.....
