And Now, Antisemitic Sunflower Seeds

US News | Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 8:41:28 am PST

What the hell is going on in Russia? Hikind, Thompson Denounce Sunflower Seeds Package As Anti-Semitic.

Brooklyn, NY - Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) and New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson today denounced the Shnayder family, owners of the value import store, Net Cost Market, for stocking and selling dozens of packages of roasted sunflower seeds featuring a caricature of a greedy-and-sinister-looking Jew, complete with skullcap, on the label. The Cyrillic letters on the left of the label read, “Shalom, from Israel,” while the right side employs a slang phrase meaning “spit them out everywhere,” alluding to “dirty Jews.” The seeds are available in both 5.5 and 10.5 ounce bags. A survey conducted by Hikind’s office revealed that the seed bags are being sold in all four of Net Cost Market’s Brooklyn locations for a mere $0.99 to $1.99 per bag depending on size.

“I was absolutely appalled when I saw this label,” said an outraged Hikind. “Net Cost Market has become a complicit partner in the dissemination of hatred against Jews. With each bag sold, the Shnayders are literally sowing seeds of hate.” At three of the four locations, consumers who spent $50 or more were given the package of seeds as a promotional gift right at the checkout counter.

Net Cost Market bills itself as the “Costco of the ethnic Eastern European market,” and offers a wide assortment of imports from all over Eastern Europe. The roasted sunflower seeds are produced in the Former Soviet Union by Kremlin Kitchen. “I was not surprised to learn that this anti-Semitic product is being made in Russia,” said Hikind. “Recent reports indicate that attacks on Russia’s Jewish population and their property have increased in both number and severity. Kremlin Kitchen is trying to capitalize on this existing wave of anti-Semitic sentiment with the Russian-American community.”

Hikind just received word from Edward Shnayder of Net Cost Market that all packages of the roasted sunflower seeds featuring a caricature of a greedy-and-sinister-looking Jew, complete with skullcap, on the label are being pulled from the shelves in all four stores effectively immediately.

You are so ignorant, anyone familier with German Anti-Jewish propeganda, knows that this face is purely sinister, long hooked nose, evil eyes etc. We Jews can indeed laugh at our own, we always did. This package is clearly marketed to a Anti-Jewish crowd and should be removed.

You may be right on the facts of the intent of the package, the intent of the picture, etc.

But, in this country we have a right of freedom of speech. This is protected speech in my opinion. I would fight for this sonai Yisroel's right to see his nuts with that hateful picture.

A person has a right to hate the Jews.
A person has a right to be an antisemite.

"Shnayder" sounds like a Jewish name--and is spelled in a very Borough Park way.

The most anti-Semitic crowd will always be the Jews themselves. I'm Jewish, and I consider my own people as a bigger enemy than the Arabs - the Arabs are just simply another bump in the road of our long list of enemies. Its the Jewish character to lay over, to try and appease and make everyone happy - except the Jews. For some reason, Jews feel guilty for living.

The IDF is drawing up options for a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities that do not include coordination with the United States, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

While its preference is to coordinate with the US, defense officials have said Israel is preparing a wide range of options for such an operation.

"It is always better to coordinate," one top Defense Ministry official explained last week. "But we are also preparing options that do not include coordination."

I think I am paraphrasing Robert Heinlen, but I may be wrong.

"Don't assume someone is evil when stupidity will do."

It is entirely possible a buyer bought these, someone at the factory changed the packaging after the fact and no one caught it when the goods were received.

People receiving good, stocking shelves are filling bags don't pay attention to the labels. Just like postal workers don't look for racist content on the letters and postcards they deliver.

All this hoopla might get someone's head placed on a pike in NYC. While everyone is looking for an easy scapegoat (who i'll bet even money ends up being a Jew or a Jewish owned store) the person who probably pulled this off in Russia will find this on the Internet and laugh.

I wonder if some people might not collect this type of thing, the way some African-Americans collect memorabilia with racist caricatures (the old style Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, etc.).

I remember the old versions of the Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben, and I also remember that I thought that they were positive depictions of African-Americans. I think too many people see racism where it doesn't really exist.

But then I've also always wondered why Amos 'n Andy was racist and The Jeffersons wasn't.

/However, the sunflower packaging is not an example of the above. It is about as offensive as anything I've seen in a long time.

Awesome avatar and nic...Are you a bay area native?
I married the most beautiful jewish girl in the world who has a huge family.
I've never gotten that from her friends or family..the whole guilty about living thing. I wasn't exactly accepted when we dated by her family..And i did kick the shit out of one of her brothers when we were young. But i'd take a bullet for anyone of them.
Our first Christmas her family gave me a solid silver star of David with a cross in it as a necklace...

i wonder if whoever is doing this packaging is also using black and moslem stereotyping? most likely NOT. it is easier to malign jews. they tend to not riot and burn over such insults. still, who are these people trying to entice w/ this packaging? what consumer will see this product and think 'yes, i'll buy that.'
it could only be people who hate jews. but this is a food item and the depiction does not make it appetizing.
it could just be plain old propaganda. sunflower seeds are cheap.

Don't forget Aunt Jemima...

You know, having some food that has an 'ethnic' insignia is not all bad, it is when there is clearly the negative, insulting, harsh and vitriolic message, even in subtlety that is the problem and 'sows the seeds' of racism.

For me, Aunt Jemima does not connote that, nor has it ever. It is like any other warm-home, old-fashioned reference and is positive.

When was it that Snapple had a "K" on it's label signifying kosher and they were made to change it because someone felt it was supportive of the kkk? Some stretches are irrational, but this sunflower deal is for the birds - and they should be made to eat crow for it...all 'freedom of speech' aside, this is pure hate food!

Hikind just received word from Edward Shnayder of Net Cost Market that all packages of the roasted sunflower seeds featuring a caricature of a greedy-and-sinister-looking Jew, complete with skullcap, on the label are being pulled from the shelves in all four stores effectively immediately.
“While it is commendable that the Shnayder family acted quickly to remove these offensive packages, it is outrageous for them to contend that they had no knowledge of the products being sold in their store,” Hikind said. “It is incumbent upon the management to know every product which is purchased from their suppliers, stocked on their shelves, and sold to their consumers.”

And if Our Messiah-King runs true to form He will go before the nation, praising His prescience, when a terrorist is caught picking his feet in Poughkeepsie while ignoring Congress erecting barriers that blind those charged with our defense who will be unable to stop that nuke container.

Jews are experts on the doghouse. Little known fact, David didn't actually send Bathsheba's husband off to die in battle. He gave the soldier a new imported washboard and a jar of Phonecian perfume, labeled "Stink be Gone" that the sap then passed on to "the little woman," and then moved in when the devastated man volunteered for a suicide mission.

• Why is the coalition proceeding with a bailout when the Bank of Canada said Monday that Canada's economy continued to expand, growing at an annualized rate of 1.3% in the third quarter, faster than expected, and the quickest growth rate of the year?

• How can the coalition claim the Conservative government has failed to adequately prepare for a recession, when the economy continues to expand? How can preparations for something that hasn't happened be judged to have failed? How can they be judged inadequate when the extent of the difficulty isn't known yet?

That material is historically important, and personally hard to examine.
This is particularly affecting:

"J" Passport for Jew who Perished. In the past we've had similar type "J" or "Jude" Passports for people who were "lucky" enough to escape the Nazis. In this case this passport was issued to someone who was transported to Litzmannstadt and who perished before the end of the war. Issued in Vienna on 13 February 1940 to Isak Schneider with a Red "J" on the first page. The photo, along with Nazi handstamp, reveals his left ear very prominently. (Nazi propaganda says that Jews could be distinguished because their left ear was "different"). Mr. Schneider was born in Pressburg on November 6th 1874. Obviously there are no visas inside and Mr. Schneider was not able to leave Vienna until October 15th of 1941 when he was transported to Litzmannstadt. Accompanying this document is a printout from the "The Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names" from Yad Vashem which confirms the details. In excellent condition due to the unfortunate fact that it was never used. Remarkably this passport survived the war and for that reason alone must be extremely rare.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the cartoon on the package looks exactly like art by Gregorius Nekschot, who was arrested in Holland for "hate speech" for making satirical cartoons about Muslims, not Jews. Though it's entirely possible that he made this drawing as part of a larger drawing commenting about Jewish stereotypes, and the Russian seed company used his drawing without his permission.

Alternately, it's just an artist with a VERY similar style.

Example of similar-looking Nekschot cartoon here.

Sorry. Took me a while to get into work.

So that works out to an average per soldier of 485.7 pints of beer and 25.7 bottles of wine for 2007. That works out to about 1 and 1/3 bottles of beer per day for the year.

For 2008, that works out to 256 bottles of beer per soldier, for 1.4 beers per day.

For some reason this does seem to be true.

One the 12 apostles of our LDS (Mormon) church died this week at 91. Since he was renown for his sense of humor, his daughter recounts this story:

He believed that humor was a great antidote for adversity.

He told this story in October's General Conference: “ I remember when one of our daughters went on a blind date. She was all dressed up and waiting for her date to arrive when the doorbell rang. In walked a man who seemed a little old, but she tried to be polite. She introduced him to me and my wife and the other children; then she put on her coat and went out the door. We watched as she got into the car, but the car didn't move. Eventually our daughter got out of the car and, red faced, ran back into the house. The man that she thought was her blind date had actually come to pick up another of our daughters who had agreed to be a babysitter for him and his wife.

“We all had a good laugh over that. In fact, we couldn't stop laughing. Later, when our daughter's real blind date showed up, I couldn't come out to meet him because I was still in the kitchen laughing. Now, I realize that our daughter could have felt humiliated and embarrassed. But she laughed with us, and as a result, we still laugh about it today.”

This sounds like something that happens to me.

Sorry. Took me a while to get into work.

So that works out to an average per soldier of 485.7 pints of beer and 25.7 bottles of wine for 2007. That works out to about 1 and 1/3 bottles of beer per day for the year.

For 2008, that works out to 256 bottles of beer per soldier, for 1.4 beers per day.

thanks,

re: #9 Sharmuta

The conventional explanation for Vladimir Putin's popularity is straightforward. In the 1990s, under post-Soviet Russia's first president, Boris Yeltsin, the state did not govern, the economy shrank, and the population suffered. Since 2000, under Putin, order has returned, the economy has flourished, and the average Russian is living better than ever before. As political freedom has decreased, economic growth has increased.

An idea now being promoted in the good old US of A.

I paid $700 for the Kirby. I have had it for twenty years, and it runs rings around cheap vacs. Since the girls are long-haired, I have had to replace the maple brush roller once, and of course belts. Other than that, $35 on a power switch after fifteen years.

The Throne Speech is how a government lays out it's legislative agenda. The speech is voted up or down. When the general election was held 7 weeks ago, the Conservatives won more seats in parliament, the opposition parties all lost seats. A throne speech was read & Parliament passed it, which means they approve with the agenda, if not the content of the bills yet to be tabled. Now suddenly, the opposition decide they don't support the gov't. Which is it? They don't support the gov't and they claim they can form a coalition gov't. But such a coalition doesn't have a mandate. If the opposition want to govern, they should be ready for another election. They are afraid to do that, as they know they will loose. So instead they tried this parliamentary putsch.

That's one good woman ya got there. Practical. I actually DID give my wife a new vacuum for her birthday, but it was an in-house vacuum, which she really, really wanted.

My wife and I have a little "joke" going each birthday/Christmas - we get a gift that WE want (not what the spouse wants) and then ask them, "Can I borrow that for a while?". Don't do this for large-ticket items, but for little stuff it's kinda funny. (One of her purchases was a hot glue gun, this'll give you an idea of "little").

Much Jewish anti-Semitism is between differant social and origin groups. For example the first Jews in Americafrom the 17th century were Sephardim from Brazil, originally of Spanish-Portuguese background with a stop in Constantinople possible. They thought they were aristocrats and looked down on the German Ashkenazim who arrived during the middle of the 19th century. An example of them were the Sulzbergers. They formed the backbone of Conservative, Liberal and Reform Judaism. They despised the Orthodox Jews from Eastern Europe who came later. The Russian Jews, from the Pale of Settlement, looked down on the Polish Jews and the Polish Jews looked down on the Hungarian Jews called Galitsianos. Everybody needs to feel that they are better than somebody.

See the books "Our Crowd" by Stephen Birmingham and "The Kingdom and the Power" by Gay Talese. Reform Judaism German Jews like the Sulzbergers were strongly opposed to the creation of Israel.

while the right side employs a slang phrase meaning ''spit them out everywhere,'' alluding to ''dirty Jews.''

Okay, the highlighted part seems like someone going out of his way to see anti-Semitism that simply isn't there -- simply because spitting out sunflower-seed husks in pretty much every public place isn't exactly unheard of among actual Russians from Russia. (In other words, they wouldn't think of it as a custom peculiar to "those dirty Jews," because plenty of "normal Russians" also spit sunflower-seed shells everywhere.)

Also, some Googling for the "slang phrase" referred to, namely Вездепл& #1102;йка (Vezdepliuyka), leads me to think that it's actually an established brand name for these packaged sunflower seeds. And a Google Image search for that Russian word turned up a few photos of other Russian-packaged sunflower seeds without any Jewish caricatures on them.

Not saying that the cartoon isn't anti-Semitic -- only that the Russian phrase isn't an allusion to "dirty Jews," or to "spitting Jews out of Russia," or anything like that.

This is a drive-by - busy day.

While I was wrapping presents, I was watching Russia Today television (thank you Cox Communications!).

They're going after Poland - big time - apparently to justify going into Georgia again. The story line is that anti-aircraft missles sold by Poland to Georgia have been found in Chechnya. They've got some 'military analyst' on who says that THE WEST means harm to Russia.

Poland's Foreign Ministry is saying the arms sales to Georgia were 'lawful' and transparent and if the weapons got to Chechnya it's probably because the Russians found them during their invasion of Georgia and moved them there themselves.

blech.

The question is, did they in fact know that that picture was on the package? If they did, then there is reason to believe this may have been done with malice forethought. If not, then they showed poor judgment in (A) accepting the shipment and (B) in allowing it to be placed in their store.

Regardless of the reason, they will pay an economic price as shoppers take their business elsewhere .

The originators (radio) [of Amos & Andy] were white.

I learn something new every day from these comments...

I only knew this show from TV. By that point, I don't remember it as in the least racist. If I recall, one character was an honest man and the other was a ne'er-do-well. We weren't supposed to laugh at the bum because he was black; we were supposed to laugh because he was a bum. It's an archetype of comedy. May as well say that National Lampoon's Vacation movies, with Cousin Eddie, was racist against whites.

But yeah... the origins are a problem. A lot of "old" stuff, particularly from the pre-Depression era, makes me want to hide.

2. People in Russia, including Jews, may have a slightly different sense of humor than what we are used to.

This is true -- and it also occurs to me that some Russian Jews who had immigrated to the U.S. (and thus felt finally safe from the omnipresent anti-Semitism of Russia) might be able to appreciate the package's caricature in an ironic / kitschy / campy way. (Not that all Jewish immigrants from Russia would find the sinister Jew more funny than threatening -- it would likely depend on how bad their personal experiences with anti-Semitism had been in Russia, and what kind of experiences they'd had after arriving in the U.S., and how fully Americanized they felt, etc.)

I have said before, and I will keep repeating: Any Jews left in Russia need to get the hell out. Anti-Semitism will never, ever, ever be erased in Russia. It's bad enough in the rest of Europe, but Russia is ten times worse, and it's only a matter of when -- not if -- the pogroms recommence.

I don't know if this has been posted, but they now are removed from the stores...thanks to Assemblyman Hikind.

[...]UPDATE 5:50PM EST: Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) just received word from Edward Shnayder of Net Cost Market that all packages of the roasted sunflower seeds featuring a caricature of a greedy-and-sinister-looking Jew, complete with skullcap, on the label are being pulled from the shelves in all four stores effectively immediately.

What I'm suggesting is that the owners of the store didn't know the graphic was on the label when they placed the order, or else they did not authorize the purchase of this item. I'm not suggesting that there is NO malice or NO antisemitism involved, only that it shouldn't be imputed to the owners of the store chain without further evidence.

A century of living under the boot of Communism, a brief breath of air and a chance of freedom when the Soviet Union fell and they blew it. It's now a plain old, off the shelf thug-ocracy without the fancy red banners and military parades.

So what do a miserable people who've ruined their society typically do? Hmmm. Should they say: "We blew it. Let's get introspective and re-build our country?" Nooooo. Do they say: "Let's blame the thugs we allowed to take power with promises of restoring phony old imperial glory?" Nooooo. That they were put out for people to buy says it all about the owners.

You both expect too much of the owners and give too much credit to their staff. The owners cannot be expected to be aware of every item that is displayed in every one of their stores. If they had continued to display the items, after it was brought to their attention, then there would be cause for outrage against them and the store. But they didn't- apparently the items have been removed.
The people who actually work in the store are mostly recent immigrants. At least in Philly most of the stockboys are from Latin America and not the FSU; many of don't speak English. We're not talking about the sharpest scissors in the drawer, and they may not even have known that there was anything offensive about the package. They were told to open the boxes and stock the shelves, and that's what they did.
Could there be anti-semitism here? Certainly, on the part of the manufacturer. Possibly, on the part of the guy who placed the order, and I hope the store figures out who that was and, if he knew what he was ordering, fires him. But on the part of the store owners? Doesn't seem to be the case.

380 ibn abu  Thu, Dec 4, 2008 1:15:54pm

I'm in no way defending or minimizing Russian antisemitism, which is rampant. I'm just saying let's not rashly call for boycotts and run a bunch of Jews who stock a wide assortment of Israeli and kosher products out of business on groundless charges that they are antisemites.

"... anti-Semitic sentiment with the Russian-American community.”
Guys,
There can be no "anti-Semitic sentiment with the Russian-American community", unless it is Noam Chomsky's self-hating anti-Semitism. There is very simple reason for it: so-called "Russian"-American community consists of Jewish emigrants from the former Soviet Union. I am one of them. The small percentage of those "Russians", who are not Jewish, are family members of the Russian Jews.
I doubt that those idiots who put that ugly picture on the package put any thought into the anti-Semitic origins of the picture.
The word "Vezdepluika" is a made-up word in the Russian language. It could be properly translated as "everywhere-spitter". Eating sunflower seeds is an activity as popular in Russia as smoking, maybe more so. The way most people eat them (something I never could master) is they put a seed into the mouth and then spit the peel out.
Jewish Democrats like Dov Hikind could have their time better spent resisting real anti-Semites, including the ones in the in-coming administration, rather than looking for non-existing "anti-Semitic sentiment with the Russian-American community".
Eric.

Did you not read the rest of my post? "Spit 'Em Everywhere" is on the label because it's the freakin' brand name of the sunflower seeds, not as an instruction to the consumer.

Here in Alberta, this brand of sunflower seeds is grown and marketed. I'm sure they picked the name because that is what one does with them. There are many people of Ukrainian origin here in Alberta, and sunflower seeds are popular amongst them. You also see a fair number of oil-rig workers using them, as a substitute for smoking, which is prohibited on the job for obvious reasons.

391 eric_odessit  Thu, Dec 4, 2008 5:11:55pm

One more thing. "Shnayder" is the way someone from the former Soviet Union would spell this last name. The Americanized spelling would be "Snider" or, in German, "Schneider". So, yes, the store owner is likely a Russian Jew.

for that caricature picture ALONE

Actually, if Eric is still reading the thread, I'd be curious to know what he thinks of a comment someone made on the linked site, Vos Iz Neias:

What happened to our ability to laugh at ourselves. The foundation of Yiddish humor was our ability to laugh, even at ourselves.

But, truthfully, I do not see the picture as offensive. I see it as a Jew "licking his chops" waiting to get his hands on these great garinim.

His face does not look evil to me. He looks EAGER to get at the nuts.

In other words, while the picture is of a stereotypically "greedy" Jew, this poster puts a benign spin on it -- that the Jew is merely "greedy" for the delicious sunflower seeds, not for gold or for baby's blood.

I thought this was a preposterous interpretation, at first -- but on thinking about it, I had to admit the possibility that, yes, such a benign reading might be possible for someone from a thoroughly non-Western background, who was not evaluating the illustrations by the aesthetic language of late 20th-century American cartoons. What I'm trying to say is that both beauty and ugliness are in the eye of the beholder, and whether one sees the cartoon Jew's greed as disturbing and predatory, or funny in a "Cookie Monster"-ish way, will be influenced by the caricature styles that one grew up with.

(Also, it occurs to me to wonder whether the "big Jew nose" stereotype is even part of traditional Russian anti-Semitism -- considering that a lot of non-Jewish Slavs are pretty well-endowed in the nose department.)

re: #400 Cutty Sark

I was born there , and know Brighton Beach and Coney Island - as I said the Russian Immigrants that heavily populate those areas of Brooklyn , brought all their baggage with them.

According to a Jewish guy of Russian descent whom I briefly dated while living in Brooklyn, there were several different waves of Russian/Soviet immigration to Брайтон Бич. He told me that the Jews had gotten there first, in the late Soviet period, but that more recent immigrants were often non-Jewish Russians. These gentile latecomers were at first glad to take advantage of the russophone neighborhood and community services created by the earlier Jewish immigrants, but then started resenting the very people (i.e., the "rich money-grubbing Jews") who were helping them assimilate to American life.

re: #401 Gella

Gella,
I live in San Diego, CA - hardly a small city.
Although there are a lot of non-Jews coming in from the former Soviet Union in the recent years, you will have to agree that majority of 1st generation Russian-speaking immigrants are indeed at least partially Jewish.
I did experience something similar to anti-Semitism from my fellow immigrants, who were themselves Jewish. As it is obvious from my nick, I am originally from Odessa. The stuff I heard from the "Russians" about people from Odessa is exactly the kind of stuff antisemites say about Jews. Even when I was getting married, one of many reasons my in-laws (from Riga) disapproved of me was that I was from Odessa. (They admitted they were wrong).
The only time I ever saw real nasty anti-Semitism in my 19 year living in this country was coming from the Left when I was countering their demonstration as a part of Protest Warrior. I did not see it from the regular Americans or the non-Jewish Russian-Americans.
Eric.

407 eric_odessit  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 10:43:26am

re: #405 Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark,
The picture IS blatantly anti-semitic, straight out of "Der Sturmer". That is why I called people who put it on the package "idiots". What makes them idiots is the fact that they used that picture without realizing how ugly and anti-Semitic it is.
Brighton Beach is called "Little Odessa" because majority of them are Jews, many of them from Odessa. Yes, I have been there, several times. My cousin lives there. My friends used to live there, although they moved since.
My point about Hikind was that he should concentrate on threats to the Jews that are much larger than some stupid caricature. Those threats are coming from the islamists and their leftist enablers, not stupid Jews using anti-Semitic pictures to sell their products.
Eric.

Throbert,
Actually I hate the picture. I also dislike the Jewish jokes, the ones that play out to anti-Semitic stereotypes. I just don't think this picture merits too much attention and I don't think it should be a reason to blame the "Russian"-American community of anti-Semitism.
Eric.

409 Gella  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 1:16:46pm

Eric i experienced more anti-semitism from our own "russians" non-jews and jews themselves, them from americans. I live in Chicago, even though its very diverse, russian community pretty big, but in the same time is very small. Just remember our people, even though brainwashed for high tolerance, have very low tolerance themselves.

TMG somebody read the book :)))

410 Cutty Sark  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 4:32:07pm

Sorry eric , but I dont buy your excuse making , that picture is well known and easily recognizable by all , including those "stupid jews " //and better talk to your cousin again , Little Odessa is NOT comprised exclusively of Russian Jews .
You say they didn't realize " how ugly and anti-semitic " ... BULL SHIT !
Jews were "tolerated " in the old Soviet Union , there has always been a deep undercurrent of anti-semitism , going back to the pogroms .....go to Crown Heights Bklyn , and you'll find the Lubavitchers and Satmar are descended from Jews who came here due to persecution in the "old Russia and Soviet Union .
That particular caricature is actually a duplicate of what was circulated in pre-war Germany , and yes , the Soviet Union . It's origins are a depiction of Jews as " rats " / " vermin " / "sub-human " .
It is just as distinct as a swatstika , understood by all as to what it symbolizes .

You wann be an apologetic , go ahead , I say it's antisemitism , meant to instill a hatred , anything else is plain ole B.S.
