Registration Open -- Update: Not Any More

Open | Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 5:03:57 pm PST

LGF registration is now open for a limited time. Our standard boilerplate admonition:

Read all the rules.

Commit them to memory.

Don’t register with a proxy.

Don’t register with a throwaway email address.

Don’t register more than one account.

Don’t be a jerk.

Don’t be a troll.

Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 12/4/08 6:03:54 pm:

That sound you heard was the registration door slamming shut, with 108 hatchlings and four re-blocked sock puppets.

This is all because of the new server, you know.

The hamsters don't have much to do, so they need fresh meat.

Hmmm.

Does the new server mean new hamsters?

Or do the old ones take over the new machine and relax a bit?

Donor: Obama suggested Jakarta visit

Barack Obama told a group of donors in California early last year that his first international trip would be to Muslim Indonesia, a supporter who was present recalled today.

Obama promised during the campaign to convene a Muslim summit, and the New York Times speculated today on where he would deliver a major, early address to a Muslim audience, settling on Egypt as the likeliest.

This is the second source on this that I've seen in the last hour.

Barack Obama is toying with the idea of making a speech from an Islamic capital within his first 100 days in office. The scuttlebutt is all about finding the right one. (The consensus is Cairo–which is a terrible idea. An Obama speech there would be read as a shameful acceptance of Mubarak’s oppressive rule.) But my question is: what would he say?

The global problems generating from within the Muslim world today are so odious and so obviously self-inflicted that any honest speech on the matter would offend and enrage Muslims the world over. At the same time, because of these very problems, a softball speech about Islam’s current role in global affairs would look like cowardly capitulation. If Obama splits the difference and mixes lukewarm praise with lukewarm condemnation, the stunt will be seen rightly as meaningless.

/again, what could possibly go wrong with this idea?

Holy carp! I've been a casual reader of this site for years, always missing out on the opportunity to register. FINALLY! It's like Christmas came early this year. Too bad it came AFTER the election. I had some choice comments I would have liked to have made these past months.

Introduction: My name is John Dick. I do hope that this doesn't cause any offense, but it really is my legal name. I'm a vet of the '91 Gulf War. I worked as a radio DJ for many years, and am now currently working as a DJ at a strip club in Dallas TX. I've also done voice acting for video games.

I was married to a rocket scientist (aerospace engineer is the technical term). Got divorced about a year ago. No kids or property, relatively clean divorce. We both had just drifted apart over the years. No love lost, we still keep in touch. Now she's focusing on her career, and I'm nailing strippers.

Politically, I'm a Libertarian. I believe in a limited government (unlike EVERY politician in office). Religiously, I'm agnostic. I really don't give a rat's posterior about a person's religious beliefs, provided they don't try to force them upon me.

That about sums it up. Glad to be here. Let's hope I don't screw up too badly during the initiate period, and get my butt kicked out. I do promise to try to behave myself... though, I admit to having a ornery streak that gets me into trouble at times. Though, it usually only surfaces when I'm drunk at bars, trying to hit on the ladies.

It shouldn't be too bad. Chargers/Raiders matchups are usually good watching even if the teams are worst in the league.

You overestimate his support, Iron Fist. I would say that only 35% percent of the country would take such an action favorably. Islam is not that popular here. re: #121 Killian Bundy

Power Line has a slightly different take on it.

Franken isn't talking or acting like a winner. As I wrote on Power Line this week, I conclude that Franken anticipates losing the recount.

Franken has already resorted to litigation over rejected absentee ballots and threatened further litigation over the rejection of certain absentee ballots. He has met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on the subject and won Reid's expression of concern, implicitly raising the threat that the Senate Democratic majority may overturn the result reached in Minnesota if the rejected absentee ballots in issue aren't counted. Al Franken hasn't been funny in a very long time, but that is really unfunny.

I'd like to believe that you are right. I'm not sure that I do, though. Most of the country isn't paying attention. If they were, Obama would not be the President-elect. Obama has way too many troubling questions out there. Questions that he has simply refused to answer. His association with the Weather Underground terrorists or his attending the racist, anti-American church alone would have been enough to kill him (figuratively speaking).

If he were to publicly convert to Mohammedanism most of the electorate would yawn. And wonder what Obama was going to do about the Economy.

Hi, it's good to be out of that egg.

I forget, is Obama Sunni or Shia?
The, "Obama's a Muslim," thing, is a poor welcoming party, I'm sorry to say.

The party needs rebuilding, and this is how we're spending our time?
We can be better than the loony/lefty fringe, and we must.
There are elections in two years, and you can see how well the "OMG SEKRET MUZZLEM" line worked.

I know people are taking it easy after work, the weekend is coming up, and we're all just letting down our hair, but LGF has a reputation as a credible place of discussion, one Charles has worked hard to maintain.

Today's WTF news item:

More than 130,000 inflatable breasts have been lost at sea en route to Australia.

Men's magazine Ralph was planning to include the boobs as a free gift with its January issue.

The cargo is worth about $200,000, which is another blow for publisher ACP's parent company PBL, which is already in $4.3 billion of debt.

A spokeswoman for Ralph said the container left docks in Beijing two weeks ago but turned up empty in Sydney this week.

Who in the wide wide world of sports would steal 130,000 plastic toy breasts?

In this country you're allowed to attack Christmas. It may not be "nice," but it's allowed.

The constitution guarantees free speech, not good taste.

Yes, you are allowed to attack Christmas. But you are also allowed to defend it, and that is what O'Reilly is doing. He has never called for silencing the anti-Christmas crowd, but rather resisting their demands and answering their words with pro-Christmas speech.

Stop Using the Word ‘Islam’ in Reports on Terrorism, Islamic Bloc Says

Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) had its way, media reporting on terrorist activity would exclude “any reference to Islam” – whatever the affiliation, identity or motivation of the perpetrators.

The bloc of Islamic nations, which is spearheading a drive at the United Nations to have the “defamation” of Islam outlawed, this week voiced criticism about media coverage of recent terrorist attacks.

Without citing any specific attack, the OIC’s Jeddah-based general secretariat said in a statement it had “noticed a tendency of a section of the media, to interpose the word ‘Islam’ in reporting these incidences.”

Right, why don't you just spend your time and energy toward ending Muslim terrorism, then none of this will be a problem for anyone, win win for everyone.

Yes, you are allowed to attack Christmas. But you are also allowed to defend it, and that is what O'Reilly is doing. He has never called for silencing the anti-Christmas crowd, but rather resisting their demands and answering their words with pro-Christmas speech.

That's not what O'Reilly was saying. Bill O was criticizing judges for allowing atheist's to construct a display on public property. That's a push toward silencing the anti-christian crowd.

Christianity (and religion in general) is much stronger than a few political outliers who speak out against it. Religion does lots of good in our society, but the topic is open for public debate.

I often agree with O'Reilly, but not on this one.

Peter J. Limone arrested again, 7 years after release

Peter J. Limone, who spent more than 33 years behind bars for a gangland murder he didn’t commit, was arrested this afternoon in Medford on illegal gaming charges, two law-enforcement sources have confirmed.

Limone, 74, was indicted by a Middlesex grand jury. Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone has not yet issued a statement.

Sprung from prison in 2001, Limone was last year awarded $26 million by U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Gertner for his wrongful conviction - along with three other men - on July 31, 1968, for the Chelsea murder of Edward “Teddy” Deegan

Bailing out the banking industry was supposedly something that needed to be done literally in hours or the world was going to end! Six weeks later - where is that cash again? Banks truly produce nothing, just like government. The auto industry produces tangible and necessary products people want and use, and replace.

Olberdink Compares ‘Grotesque’ Chambliss to ‘Turkey-Killing Machine,’ Carlson: ‘Both Are Killers’

On Monday’s Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann compared Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss’s 2002 campaign against then-Democratic Senator Max Cleland of Georgia to a "turkey-killing machine," as part of a segment with Bloomberg News’s Margaret Carlson, formerly of Time magazine, in which the duo mocked Sarah Palin’s part in a campaign rally for Chambliss. Olbermann: "What is the more grotesque event to be standing in front of and not paying attention to? What we`re seeing now, she`s standing in front of Saxby Chambliss who ran that campaign against Max Cleland six years ago, or standing in front of a turkey-killing machine?" As she laughed, Carlson responded: "Both are killers." Referring to the presence of the rapper Ludacris in Georgia as he campaigned for Democratic candidate Jim Martin, the pair also made cracks about Palin being "ludicrous" as Olbermann tagged her as "Governor Ludicrous of Alaska," and Carlson called her "Miss Slight Ludicrous."

So funny I forgot to laugh.

Anyone can say whatever they want. I'm for it, nice or not nice. However, that sign they put up did not match the decorum or intention of the rest of the display. But that laundry list--was not.

If government spaces and authorities have a right to set standards for use of these types of spaces, they should do so respecting atheists. Could the atheists have been a little less insulting in that particular setting? If the point is to change people's minds, bring home a point, the sign could have carried the point. If the intention is to get people utterly hostile, well then, maybe it was mission accomplished.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair called for United States President-elect Barack Obama to press hard for Israel to make further territorial concessions to the Palestinian Authority. Blair, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Wednesday, also praised Obama’s selections to lead his national security team, most notably former NATO commander General James L. Jones as National Security Advisor for the incoming administration. Jones was until recently the US special envoy for Middle East security and in that role has advocated sending a NATO force to impose a solution in Judea and Samaria.

No wonder Barry went back on his word.

Final Official Obama Fundraising Number -- a Record-Setting $745 Million

From October 16 until November 24 (the Federal Election Commission filing period) the Obama campaign reports raising $104,124,845 from 1,124,238 contributors, in an FEC reported filed this evening.

That means President-elect Obama campaign raised roughly $745 million for his 2008 presidential campaign.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., raised roughly $320 million, including the $84 million from entering into the public financing system.

This does NOT include money from the DNC and RNC. When those numbers are taken into account, we expect the Democrats to have raised closer to one billion dollars, compared to roughly $630 million for the Republicans.

Which means the President-elect had, roughly, a $400 million advantage.

ABC News' Tahman Bradley points out that Mr. Obama's total exceeds that of all 2004 candidates combined. They raised $673 million.

Lockheed Wants $147 Million to End F-22, Young Says

By Tony Capaccio

Lockheed Martin Corp., the world’s largest defense contractor, wants the U.S. Air Force to pay it as much as $147 million for stopping F-22 fighter production, according to the Pentagon’s top weapons buyer.

Lockheed has told the Air Force it will invoke a payment clause contained in the current three-year, $7 billion contract
that ends F-22 production at 183 aircraft, said Undersecretary for Acquisition John Young.

“It’s kinda, sorta holding a small gun to somebody’s head saying ‘if you don’t buy more you have to pay us extra’ and that
is inconsistent with best business practices,” Young said in a Nov. 21 interview. Young said he only learned of the penalty provision about two weeks earlier, “to my surprise and dismay,”
though it had been negotiated in 2006.

Lockheed has told the Air Force it will invoke a payment clause contained in the current three-year, $7 billion contract

“I think there is a consensus now among the international community – not just America, but everyone – on how to deal with this,” Blair said. “The question is now, what people will watch for: Is it taken forward with the requisite urgency and determination? I have every confidence that it will be.”

President-elect Obama, himself a member of the CFR, has pledged to make progress on the Middle East conflict a key diplomatic priority from his first day in office. He has called for a sustained push to achieve the goal of two states, one Jewish and one Arab, both in the small territory between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River.

Meanwhile 16 soldiers have been held over disorder in Harare, say reports.

The Zimbabwean police told the state-owned Herald newspaper that 10 of the soldiers were detained over a looting spree on Monday which broke out after the central bank said it did not have the money to pay defence force members queuing for wages.

The other six were part of a group that reportedly looted shops and battled riot police last week.

Zimbabwe's defence minister has blamed the disturbances on an unruly minority in the army, and promised to punish the culprits.

Even when Charlie Gibson interviewed him and discussed how tax cuts raised revenues, Obama maintained that he would rather raise taxes even if it meant less revenue so it would be "fair". Actually the bank buy-ins are not gimmes but do carry risk. Chrysler at least had a chance to succeed, and did, when their credit tanked years back. The problem with Detroit today is anyone in the least realistic knows that these companies, with the possible exception of Ford, will never pay back anything. Congress is just kicking the bankruptcy can down the road in some sort of glass half full, hope/change implausible scenario. Payouts to these companies, I think, must be seen as simply a delay in the car co's bankruptcies hoping the sting will be less damaging later than now. That could well be the case, but I think these companies are toast - it's just a matter of when. Don't know about anyone else, but I think I would be more apt to buy a car from a company in Chapter 11 with a plan to get out than buy a car from one that is sure to go down.

Have you successfully borrowed?

I owned a non conventional property that set all their bad loan sensors off. I get the ads, apply, and get the rejection. And they say making several applications makes you more rejectable. The reason is they tightened credit up. Lots of people in the same boat, that needed some credit margin to extend a business. Shut the credit down and eco waves can do one in. Quickly.

Two years ago I could get credit easy. Then last summer in concert, at the same time the credit was turned off by all financial institutions. They were working on institutional analysis that I didn't have access to.

A person or company should be able to give a dollar or a billion dollars to a campaign, IMO. With that, EVERY single dollar needs to be accounted for from every single donor. And, no Federal matching funds anymore! Any money left over from a campaign must be given back to the donors in a proportional manner to zero out that election account. The DNC/RNC would only be able to match up to five percent of total contributions to a candidate.

That would be true campaign finance reform. Bet McCain wished he had never authored his bill in the first place!

Throw in the fact that the F-15s have to be phased out eventually as well and you're starting to run into logistical issues of trying to have enough aircraft to handle all the missions. Even if more missions are tasked to UAVs, you are still going to need airframes available for many kinds of missions.

The thing is, they (the F-15 and F-16) don't have to be phased out anytime soon. Both are still very capable platforms and, in real-world combat, vastly outclass anything they're likely to encounter (war games don't count). Soviet/Russian types, no matter how wiz-bang, have never lived up to their hype. Just replace the current (aging) airframes with updated models (both are still in production for foreign customers).

"Fairness" is one of the code words Marxists use to cloak their totalitarian intent. Stalin didn't really mean to starve all those Ukrainians, he was just trying to "fairly" distribute food. "From each according to his measure, to each according to his needs" is all about "fairness". As is guarenteeing equality of result. Equality of oppertunity is, at best, an illusion. Any disparity in results is unfair, and "unfairness" needs to be combatted by any and all means necessary.

Of course, what they call "fairness" means the vast majority of people "enjoy" an equality of misery. Of course, the Leaders don't partake of this misery. After all, it just wouldn't be fair for them to live the way everybody else does.

The F-15s are flying past their design life thanks to Iraq and Afghanistan, so are the F-16s. We no longer have the production lines to build new ones. It is less expensive to continue with the F-35 and F-22 production. For all their expense, it would cost more to restart the older lines.

A third factor has to do with the "no booze" policy in combat zones. While many guys can unwind with Xbox and a Marlboro, others really need a few beers. Twelve months, even if broken up by one or two short vacations, is a long time to go without an occasional drink.

Heh. I read once that Ghengis Khan (or however Kerry spells it) wanted his hordes to never drink, but realizing that was impractical settled for allowing them to get drunk once a month.

Yep. And I want our guys to be a fucking generation ahead of the competition, not just a little bit ahead.

I hope Gates can convince The One of the importance of this.

So we just print trillions more of worthless paper and call it good, I guess.

Pretty close to right in a way. There will be a lot of printing and inflation will be its stepchild. But we will avoid 30's dustbowl conditions and complete collapse. What is happening is not good, but it could well be a whole lot worse.

Heh. I read once that Ghengis Khan (or however Kerry spells it) wanted his hordes to never drink, but realizing that was impractical settled for allowing them to get drunk once a month.

OK. I think I agree with this. I don't drink much, but the shorter tours make sense.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats are growing impatient with President-elect Barack Obama's refusal to inject himself in the major economic crises confronting the country.

Bawney Fwank says, "Bawack's going to have to be more aswertive than he's bwen."

Democrats want a more assertive Obama

re: #532 David Simon

I'm not sure what you mean. The government gets senior preferred (with a decent dividend) plus ten year warrants. Where's the "gimme?"

I may have misstated that a little, but it really galls me that the banks in this country, getting in trouble by playing by fast rules that Congress passed, essentially gets a pass on all of this. Banks produce nothing. They are simply a finance conduit, nothing more. The government has effectively nationalized the mortgage, banking, and soon, the auto industries. The government is literally in charge. Yeah, the banking industry is "paying back" the money in the same way that the government deficit gets paid off, then shoots to three and four trillion dollars. It's insanity that Congress has allowed through laws that people like Biden and Dodd have written, then the Congress has the audacity to hold itself blameless (remember Pelosi's statement last month?) for the current climate!

It's all smoke and mirrors. It's insanity. It will not get resolved without the economy plummeting into a Depression-style scenario, which Congress will happily embrace. People dependent on the giant gub'mint tit, ala 1933. The Jackasses' dream. And nothing gets fixed.

True enough. But I believe that Congress is 100% behind these events that caused the financial collapse. They want total economic control, and they are getting it.

I don't see conspiracy, just a whole lot of self interest and ... stupid.

The best kind of warfare is one where you defeat the Enemy so thoroughly that their decendants puke in fear at the thought of being confronted by you.

If you leave enough of them alive to have decendants at all.

A fair is a place they give ribbons to prize hogs. It has no place in a fight.

The first wave will all be killed.
The second also.
And the third.
A few from the fourth will reach the objective.
The fifth wave will capture the position.
Thank you, gentlemen.

I can't say I'm happy about the mess, but there are some very smart people in charge of the "bailout" (which has actually morphed into a more sensible program). Read this:

[Link: treas.gov...]

Far from rewarding the deadbeats, the strong banks will be encouraged to lend - and pay off the government as quickly as possible.

A few months ago any surplus oil was snapped up by China keeping the price up. China now has a few internal problems and not buying so quickly. Interesting game.

My friend whose car was hit by the 18 wheeler says he is OK, but has a twinge in his lower back.

The truck changed lanes into his car catching it right about the driver's door and ended up pushing the car in front of the truck awhile until it could get stopped. The car was drivable....insurance people will decide if it's totaled, but my guess is that the frame is bent.

He's lucky—I've seen other truck/auto wrecks that were infinitely worse.

Ah, I remember when I was a new hatchling...a week ago. (time flies, doesn't it?)

I was so nervous the window would close before I could finish registering I accidentally put 3 m's in my name. If we ever get to where I could fix that, that would be nice.

Yikes. Reminds me of when my older sister totaled her car almost two years ago. She was on a ramp between freeways to the left of a big semi; somehow she lost control of the car and veered off the road, then jerked the wheel way too far back to the right, hit the front wheel of the semi, and went spinning off the road. The car was a horrible mess, completely beyond help, but she walked away without a scratch.

I drive the same kind of car she had (first-generation Mitsubishi Diamante). I don't know if I'll ever find myself in that situation, but if I do at least I know I have a good chance of surviving it. They're far from the best cars in the world, but they're solid.
