‘We Were Lined Up and Shot’

Details are emerging about the horrific ordeals faced by many of the victims of the Mumbai atrocities: ’We were lined up and shot,’ Mumbai family tells ordeal.

Father Apoorva, a 57-year-old builder, is still recovering from his injuries. Still reeling with shock, the family was initially even hesitant to tell their name.

Instead, Parikh’s son Rohan, 22, a business student, recounted his father’s experience in an email.

His father had gone to the Oberoi that night for dinner with two of his closest friends, he said.
The three friends were at a restaurant on the first floor of the Oberoi when they heard gunshots. The hotel staff tried to rush the guests out of the kitchen exit.

‘As the guests tried to rush into the kitchen, one terrorist burst into the restaurant and began to shoot anyone that remained in the restaurant. At this point my father was in the kitchen and, along with his two friends, rushed to the fire exit.

‘They had barely descended a few steps when they were trapped from both ends by terrorists.

‘The terrorists then rounded up anyone alive (about 20 people) and made them climb the service staircase to the 19th floor. On reaching the 18th floor landing they made the people line up against a wall.

‘One terrorist then positioned himself on the staircase going up from the landing and the other on the staircase going down from the landing.

‘Then, in a scene right out of the Holocaust, they simultaneously opened fire on the people. My father was towards the centre of the line with his two friends on either side. Out of reflex, or presence of mind, he ducked as soon as the firing began.

‘One bullet grazed his neck, and he fell to the floor as his two friends and several other bodies piled on top of him. The terrorists then pumped another series of bullets into the heap of bodies to finish the job.

‘This time a bullet hit my father in the back hip. Bent almost in double, crushed by the weight of the bodies above him, and suffocating in the torrent of blood rushing down on him from the various bodies my father held on for 10 minutes while the terrorists left the area.

‘When he finally had the courage to wiggle his arms he found that there were four other survivors in the room. They communicated to each other by touch as they were too afraid to make a sound.

‘My father moved just enough to allow himself room to breathe and then lay still. The survivors passed over 12 hours lying still in the heap of bodies too afraid to move.

‘They constantly heard gunfire and hand grenades going off in the other parts of the hotel. They feared that any noise would bring the terrorists back.

‘After approximately 12 hours, the terrorists returned with a camera and flashlight and joked and laughed as they filmed what they thought was a pile of dead bodies.

‘They then moved to the landing below where they set up explosives. On their departing, my father decided that it was too risky to remain where they were, due to the explosives.’

The three survivors then climbed the rest of the stairs to reach an air-cooling plant room where they hid, drinking sips of water from the air-conditioning unit, till Friday, November 28, morning when a commando team rescued them and took them to hospital.

The time frames are amazing. I know a heavily armed man can do damage. But these guys roamed around for HOURS. I hope India learns some lessons from this. One, why doesn't a city that large have a SWAT or equivilant? Even in the UK, they have guys that can be deployed quickly. Amazing..

Wow... that sounds like the story of the guy who survived the Malmedy Massacure by playing dead, even when the Germans shot him in the calf to see if he was still alive.

I don't understand how the left gets so obsessive about the need to never "dehumanize" our enemies. The faulty assumption is that we can only see their point of view if we don't think of them as monster.

Well, read that account from the point of view of the terrorists and tell me how they aren't simply monsters.

Considering they are a nation of 1.2 billion people, those Indians sure seem like an incredible bunch of pussies when it comes to anti-terrorism issues.

Good morning Lizards. These terrorists ar despicble individuals in the extreme.
Perhaps they are not aware that after January, the Dear Leader intends to negotiate and make amends for criminal Amerikka &the West in general.
I am sure that he will make them see that we intend to capitulate & embrace our new overlords & their enlightened ideology. All will be well.

Never argue with a leftist... it is an exercise in futility... and will only end in frusration.
You will have a better chance convincing a stallion to get pregnant that a leftist that there are evil people in the world.

Looking around, it's not just India... the whole world, it seems, are pussies when it comes to terrorists. Jury is still out on China.

Except for Arab states, where they are not pussies about it... they actively support the terrorists.

Whenever something like this happens I'm always reminded of one of the cornerstones of liberal thought and ideology:

"[When confronted by violent criminals, you should] "put up no defense -
give them what they want, or run."

-- Pete Shields, Handgun Control Inc. Chairman in his book Guns Don't Die - People Do, p. 125

Helluva strategy Pete! Worked great this time! Worked great on 9/11! Will probably work just as well over the next 4 years!

(End sarcasm)

It's a lot easier to kill people if you can convince yourself that they are sub-human or pure evil. It certainly worked for the Nazis.

There was a guy on one of the FNC shows the other night. I can't remember exactly what he did , but he was somehow involved in interrogations at one time.
He claimed the waterboarding & sleep deprivation were not effective.
He recommended treating the prisoners with respect. In his opinion that is not what the expect & they would be "knocked off of their game" & would therefore cooperate. It sounded nutty.

I'm shocked that the terrorists were so callous! They lined folks up and shot them! And prejudiced, too! They looked for Americans and Jews.
With everything I've read about the brotherhood of man, and how we should understand their deep seated needs, and engage them in fellowship dialogue, it just seems so incongruous to me. It's probably just bad reporting. I'm sure they were kind, like in Stockholm.

In addition, I'll hold out on seeing what direction we are really going to head in after 1/20. I pray that continue to press the enemy where he is... We are winning the war right now, we cannot take our foot off the gas. The jury is still out on that one...

It's a heart-wrenching story, but may I point out an inconsistency on a pretty big detail...

In the middle of the story, there were four survivors.

At the end of the story, there were three survivors.

Does it mean that one of the original 4 died, was it a typo, or do I need to get out my skepticism meter?

Good morning my friend - just some more good economic news, eh?
Lord knows what's ahead for us all with Obama as president. Aside from a terrrible economy (Sen. Shelby -R, Alabama - said that the "plan offered by the Big 3 "stunk" and that the Big 3 - none of them - could get a loan from a bank; they already owe over $49 Billion in loans and now want to add a $34 Billion loan package from the taxpayers with no viable business plan going forward) Obama is gonna have to wake up and smell the coffee here - the barbarians who committed this tragedy in Mumbai would love to do the same thing - on a much bigger scale - here in the US and so far, his defense and adivsor team doesn't exactly inspire confidence in preserving our safety. I think that instead of cutting our defense budget 25% he's gonna have to increase in by 25% and the barbarians won't sit down and "chat" they WANT to cause as much disruption and death as they can.

A typical headline about these killers reads Shadowy group linked to attacks. This typifies the clueless perspective of looking for terrorist needles in Islamist haystacks. At some point - hopefully soon - we must look more closely at the problem presented by the haystacks themselves.

It is a guaranteed certainty that there are unlimited "shadowy" malignant cells which can and will emerge from the tumor that the Mumbai killers came from. The civilized world has done nothing to cause this. Islamists have invented their deadly ideology among themselves, and will continue to inflict it on us until we eliminate them.

Too many people getting weak in the knees over the Big 3... Basically saying that if they are allowed to go bankrupt we'll get a trickle-down effect (ironic, isn't it?) whereby, employyes will not be working, not paying taxes, governments will be deeper in the red... In additoin, there is no spending power and then business will suffer more...

This is why some pundits are saying the bankruptcy of any of the Big 3 will lead to Depression...

It's the whole bit about living in the world's biggest target that would scare the crap out of me.

Hell, a small nuke has a limited instant kill range. Just living in the boroughs away from Manhattan might be enough. Then, try to be lucky enough to be inside at the moment of detonation, and leave town as best you can traveling upwind from ground zero and your chances are reasonable.

Bugs and chem can be defeated the same way... going into the wind... but you can't wait around for FNC to get their facts straight, you'll have to get out as soon as you have a hunch that this is what happened.

Many times reality never sets in until the gun is placed squarely between ones eyes. That gun is still across the room, but it is headed for our corner of that room. Even then many people will go to their grave thinking all would be well if we just talked about it. The change many wanted, may be the means to our end. And according to GM, they won't make it until the end of the year - that is they can't make it for 3 more weeks!

I disagree. Couple of reasons:

1) NYC is still seen _as_ America by many of the people in the world. Symbol of all of us or something like that.

2) Its a port and a major transportation terminal. Easier to get there from Ickyickystan than, say, Chicago (which while a major transport hub, is deep inside the country).

3) They've already had success there and figure that bodes well on future efforts.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. This isn't going to help the Pakistani government one bit, and lends still more credence to the fact that Pakistan's ISI is thoroughly penetrated by Islamists.

The US is moving to declare that a whole bunch of former ISI officers terrorists.

The US government is seeking to add several former Pakistani intelligence officers to the United Nations’ list of international terrorists, The News reported. A senior US intelligence official familiar with the effort to reign in Pakistan’s intelligence service confirmed to The Long War Journal the US wants to get the United Nations Security Council to designate several senior former officers of Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence agency as international terrorists.

Included on the list of former Pakistani intelligence officers being submitted to the UNSC are Hamid Gul, Javid Nasir, and Zahirul Islam Abbasi, as well as Aslam Beg, a senior Army officer, the intelligence official said.

That's surely going to complicate matters with US-Pakistani relations, but it does bolster India's belief that the ISI was involved in the Mumbai attacks.

Hey LT - you know I don't think NYC is the next target here in the US - while it's still the largest city, too many folks just don't identify with it and our financial system is already in meltdown - no if there's another attack here, and I pray to God that there isn't, I fear it will be somewhere in the heartland - to really shake folks in America up - but I'm not gonna list or suggest any targets for 'em.

Good morning realwest.
Unfortunately, America (and Canada) are target-rich environments.
President Bush (and Jack Dempsey) certainly had it right - the best defence is a good offence.
I hope Obama will be true to his campaign promise to continue and even strengthen the policy of aggressively and relentlessly hunting down and killing the terrorists wherever they can be found.

Ideally, I think these guys should all go to BK court to sort out there problem. Unfortunately, that's proabably not going to happen. So, I'm resigned to the idea that there is gonna be a bailout of the auto companies. I know there is no easy fixes to their mess, but I have two (unconventional?) conditions I'd like to see added to any loan package:

1. The folks who presided over the mess creation should all be fired. Mullaly (the Ford guy) can stay. He came from Boeing recently and I trust him. But the other two guys and the Union guy need to be ousted as part of any bailout. period!

2. They need to move HQ out of Detroit. Detroit is obviously an incestuous cesspool of auto execs. Make at least one of the companies move someplace else wo they learn about the rest of the county...maybe then they'll start building cars folks want to buy instead of cars they want to make.

Well I'm sad, pissed and scared - take a look at your list and see that not only does this new breed of barbarism reach well outside the US, where US interests were concerned, it's been a bi-partisan effort.
Ronald Reagan - who I think might have been the greatest president ever and was certainly the greatest president in the 20th Century, was POTUS during the Marine Massacre in Lebanon, Clinton for the Cole and Somali disasters - I mean we have bi-partisanly fucked up royally here.
That's yet another reason why I think George W. Bush deserves SO MUCH credit for there not being another 9/11 on American Soil - but the GWoT HAS to be take to the terrorists - we have to go on the offense against them as we did in Afghanistan and in Iraq. Considering they are a nation of 1.2 billion people, those Indians sure seem like an incredible bunch of pussies when it comes to anti-terrorism issues.

I would disagree.
Just a few weeks ago they sank a pirate ship.
They didn't ask the UN for permission...they just went ahead and sank it.
In this recent hotel situation, they killed all but one of the terorists.
They also couldn't just rush into a crowded hotel and shoot-up the place searching for bad guys.
The stories of armed policemen NOT shooting at the terrorists is troublesome...
Perhaps public outrage will ratchet-up their counter-terrorism forces.

Chapter 11 reorganization doesn't mean the end of the US auto industry unless they're unable to come up with a plan for restoring profitability. It empowers the debtor corporations to shed bad contracts, including labor agreements, and to become lean, mean, and competitive once again.

A bailout without first filing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy means a brief postponement of the inevitable catastrophic failure. The longer they postpone Chapter 11, the less likely they are to succeed.

I don't think the terrorists are of a mind that they need to hit someplace else to prove they can...rather the opposite, that the infidels have spent all this time and effort trying to protect NY and they can still hit it whenever they want.

Which is BS, but I don't claim to understand their twisted minds anyway.

Yes, Obama is not the guy to lead a national effort.

I visited her yesterday & she seems better - she's not happy to be in the hospital, but she accepts that is the only way to get better, and she does want to be better. I'm going to speak to her doctor later today & visit her again tonight. Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts & prayers.

Well as I said, I don't want to prepare a list of targets for them to hit; I just think it will be someplace other than NYC to sorta drive home the point that they can "hit us" wherever we are.
I just hope that that never happens, but if it does, I hope it finally unites all Americans into saying "ENOUGH!" and literally go to War against terrorism, even if it means a draft, FDR style government contracts to GM, Chevy, Ford, Boeing and other big entities to build the necessary tools of war, rationing, something to get the entire nation personally involved - and I just don't see Obama as that kind of leader.

just as well: we don't fight that way anymore, and there's no good reason to back to doing so.

I think it will definetly be a port city of some kind. Out here in the Northwest, they upped security at all the dams. Which is okay, but misguided. There is no 24 hour news station around any of the hydro power dams. The jihadis want mayhem and news coverage. Plus a dam is like 300 feet of concrete at the base and 20 plus at the top. You'd need a lot of shaped charges to breach one.

Giuliani was obsessed with training NYC's employees to respond to a terrorist attack. On 9/11, every bridge and tunnel in NYC was sealed off within an hour of the attacks, with police sniper teams in place covering them, looking for fleeing suspects.

NYC probably is better prepared fora terrorist attack than other other major US city.

G'day from Down Under to everyone} - again, I was on the DDT :-)

Frightening stuff to read about on a warm Saturday early morning...

The dangerous illusion of independent terrorists...

WHEN US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in India this week, all the talk was about "non-state actors" and the challenge they throw up to the international system. The assumption was that the Pakistan-based terrorists responsible for the murders of about 175 people in Mumbai, and the injuries to hundreds more, were non-state actors.

Yet it may be that since the 9/11 attacks in New York, the world has completely misconceived the age of terror.

The radical increase in the lethality, range, political consequence and strategic influence of terrorists comes not from their being non-state actors at all. Instead it comes from their being sponsored by states.

Sometimes they are the instruments of states and at other times they make strategic alliances with states.

A terrorist group operating without any state sponsorship is an infinitely less dangerous outfit than a terrorist group operating with the co-operation of even the most ramshackle state.

However, states not only co-operate with terrorists, in many cases they direct and even found the terrorists.

and...

Which brings us to Mumbai.

Pakistan has for many years been a significant state sponsor of terrorism. Its military intelligence agency, ISI, founded the Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist group, initially to harass India in Kashmir. The ISI also founded the Taliban to ensure a pro-Pakistan government in Kabul.

Even when Pakistan allegedly turned against terror and rounded up a few al-Qa'ida leaders, it never captured a Taliban leader. Nor did it ever really try to.

Now US intelligence has determined that former leaders of the ISI and other former Pakistani military figures trained the terrorists who perpetrated the Mumbai massacres.

Even if the impotent Pakistani civilian Government was not directly involved in the Mumbai massacres, it makes sense to see the long campaign of terror against India as sponsored by at least part of the Pakistani state. Given the Pakistani state also pioneered the idea of the Islamic nuclear bomb, this should sound the gravest alerts.

Thus it may be that modern terrorism is not so much the emergence of non-state actors on to the strategic field but, rather, the latest refinement of state power, giving the option of state military and terrorist action with plausible, or at least politically useful, deniability. If anything, therefore, we have tended to underestimate the strategic importance of terrorism.

Pakistan was involved in the Mumbai attack - so what is to be done?

This for me, is truly frightening - a country with nuclear weapons, sponsoring terrorism and it's happening right now - wake up Western world

Hard to argue with that logic vis-a-vis the Nazis.
War is hell, and if it enhances our soldiers' ability to kill the enemy by viewing their battlefield foes as sub-human vermin then so be it.
But we should not dehumanize an entire ethnic or religious group, because that paves the way for fascism and genocide.

Absolutely correct - folks will buy a car from a bankrupt company, that isn't the problem - hey, how many folks buy used pre-owned cars anyway?
The problem certainly lies with the Unions, they just have to restructure their contracts somehow, but DAMN, the Big 3 need to start producing cars that folks want to buy - and buy without GM or Ford or Chrysler financing. Let people borrow money from banks (now that, in theory, the banking crisis has been averted) and let the Big 3 make cars, not try to run financial scam's with their financing schemes.
And that is Management's turf - that's what management has been getting paid for. Ask the Unions: do you want to keep jobs for all your members at a 20% reduction (just throwing out a % there) or do you want to lose 20% of your union members now and maybe see EVERYONE in the UAW unemployed?!

Someone else tells me I can't shoot this dog. Guess who I blame? I don't even think about the dog. I know what to do with rabid dogs. I know what to do with predators who attack me in the jungle. I do not "blame" the predators. They are there. It is Biology. I kill them. The blame goes to the ones who are supposed to be on my side who make me vulnerable to attack. They are the ones I think about. The really guilty parties here are those who promote this delusional idea that we should not be prepared for predation. What did the little girl say? "My Mother told me that there are no monsters, no real ones. But there are." If you let the rabid dog in the back door; if you concentrate your efforts on making me helpless; if you do not provide me with adequate protection; I'm not going to get the dog: I'm coming for you.

NYC is the most prepared and most aggressive US City at weeding out the evil.

I think you are right, but not because the terrorists want to spread the fear. They just want an easier target. My guess is that they'll hit a heavily imigrant city. Maybe Miami.

But who knows. Maybe the less virulent approach will work. I'm not betting on it, but it's what the American people voted for so we will be forced to wait and see.

The devil's in the details on that MTA tax and spend program, and the thing that jumps out is the extraordinarily high cost to implement the E-Z Pass program, and I think that it is going to still underestimate how much it will cost to operate, and then revenues will never meet the need.

Besides that, a more basic question is why should anyone trust the MTA to manage the city's infrastructure when it can barely fulfill its obligations on existing projects. It's years behind on the Fulton project, and cost overruns are into the billions.

A Russian church for a Saudi mosque?

This delightful story just came in thanks to getreligion.org: The Saudis have recently asked permission to build a mosque in Moscow, a city where there are only four mosques and 2 million Muslims. The Russians, however, are saying they want, in return, an Orthodox church in Saudi Arabia.

As we all know, the Saudis have a habit of constructing mosques in dozens of world capitals while forbidding houses of worship for any religion whatsoever outside its Wahabist brand of Islam. They've gotten some bad PR locally for some of the hate language in textbooks at the Saudi Academy in northern Virginia. Not only are hapless Christians terrorized and jailed for daring to hold private prayer services in Saudi Arabia, but God help them should they try to convert someone to their religion. And that's for a fellow People of the Book: One can only guess at what the treatment of Buddhists and Hindus must be like.

Wouldn't it be so ironic if the Russians were the first Christian body to win acceptance of the right to build a church in, say, Riyadh? (Some of the Russians are calling for a church in Mecca, but the chances of any other religion getting a foothold within walking distance of the world center of Islam is less than zero.) Of course we all know the Saudis aren't about ready to let Bibles or other religious literature, let alone a church, anywhere near their homeland, but all the same, it's amusing to see the Russians give the Saudis a taste of their own medicine.

Sitting Ducks

India got a wake up call on this one. Every country should have a well trained and well equipped force to deal with this type of thing. Even when they sent in their "elite" commandos, it still took DAYS to clear the hotels. I know they have to be careful because of the number of innocent people and the complexity of clearing a hotel room by room. But, do you think if some terrorist assholes tried this in NY or LA or Chicago, that it would take 2 days to clear the hotel? It took them HOURS to deploy once they arrived and then they got out gunned by a handful of barely trained terrorists. Do you think the Delta Force or Navy Seals would have handled that situation differently?

I have read reports that said the ARMED policemen in the train station refused to engage these gun men. What kind of cops are they? My god, if you do not have an urge to protect yourself, this is what happens.

You're right that the failure to build the rail tunnel under NY Harbor has been a glowing failure of epic proportions, and has contributed to decades of excess congestion that has affected economic growth throughout the region. Video captures child-rape cover-up

Planned Parenthood of Indiana has suspended a nurse after the release of an undercover videotape showing her coaching a supposed 13-year-old on how to duck Indiana's laws about parental-consent on abortion and the reporting of child sex-abuse.

The videotape shows Lila Rose, the president of a university pro-life group and a brunette, posing as a blonde 13-year-old girl named "Brianna" and telling the Planned Parenthood nurse at the clinic in Bloomington, Ind., that she is pregnant by a 31-year-old man.

"I am supposed to report [you] to Child Protective Services," says the nurse on the videotape, though assuring "Brianna" she will not do so if she can tell a plausible different story.

"I didn't hear the age. I don't want to know the age," the nurse says at a later point on the tape.

The nurse, who is referred to on the video as "Diana" but whose face is blurred out, knew neither that the session was being taped nor that "Brianna" really was Miss Rose, a 20-year-old pro-life activist at UCLA.

Well y'all ought to see if you can't get an atropene needle as well to go with your gas mask; lots of bio agents just depend on contact with skin, not inhalation.

That's maybe a little further than I will go... I mean, if that, why not full MOPP gear? I think something like a dirty bomb is more likely than a sarin attack, and for that, a mask is sufficient, at least initially.

MONEY MARKETS-Libor rates, spreads fall after c.bank moves

LONDON, Dec 5 (Reuters) - The bank-to-bank cost of lending three-month money fell on Friday following several deep interest rate cuts around the world the previous day and the premium paid for unsecured funds, particularly sterling, also fell.

A day after the central banks of the euro zone, Britain, Sweden and New Zealand slashed borrowing costs by between 75 and 175 basis points, money market tensions eased.

Three-month euro London interbank offered rates fell for the 42nd consecutive session, the euro Libor spread over anticipated policy rates was its narrowest for two months and the sterling Libor/OIS spread got crushed by around 50 basis points.

But analysts pointed out that the shrinking gap between Libor and Overnight Index Swap rates -- a sign of easing money market strains -- was in a large part due to disappointment among investors over the UK and euro zone rate cuts.

I don't understand how the left gets so obsessive about the need to never "dehumanize" our enemies. The faulty assumption is that we can only see their point of view if we don't think of them as monster.

Well, read that account from the point of view of the terrorists and tell me how they aren't simply monsters.

I think the pc liberal Western terror apologists agenda is narcissistic: to flaunt their imagined superiority, to demonstrate that they are just more evolved then the masses. The more depraved and evil the people they protect, the more enlightened they must be. It's all about standing out from the crowd of unwashed rubes.

Yes. Stupid. Ports are valuable resources.

I remember watching, years ago, the sell-off of the Erie Lackawanna rights of way in New Jersey, with townhouse developments sprouting where the tracks had been. Stupid, stupid, stupid; railroad rights of way were acquired when the land was cheap. Build a bunch of townhomes on the land and you will never be able to afford to run a new railroad, no matter how much you need to.

Are you saying the Erie Lackawanna railroad is GONE? That was one of my favorite ways to get to NYC from North Jersey when I was living up state Jersey. Went from Dover all the way to the Hudson Tubes that way.

331 Kenneth  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 8:01:40am

Good morning folks,

A little update from Crazy Canada...

Yesterday, PM Harper avoided a non-confidence vote scheduled for Monday which would have brought down his gov't. Instead the G-G approved "prorogation" (recess) of Parliament until January 26th. The Conservatives will table a budget when Parliament re-convenes in January, a month earlier than the traditional February Budget time. The opposition parties were all in high outrage mode when their planned coup was thwarted. This morning cracks are appearing in the facade of the Liberal/NDP/Bloc coalition.

Dissent in Liberal ranks appears after Parliament suspended

"Having fought the NDP in my first campaign when I was running provincially, I know the NDP are vicious — vicious when it comes to electing members of Parliament," said Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis.

Now that's no way to make friends and build coalitions, Jim!

Fact check: the Liberal/NDP/Bloc coalition wanted to bring down the Conservative gov't and install themselves as gov't. They did not want to put this coalition to a popular vote. Fact is, we just had an election a mere 7 weeks ago. The Liberals were trounced, the Bloc slipped, the NDP edged up slightly, while the Conservatives won 19 more seats in Parliament. Harper has a clear mandate to form the government. The opposition do not.

The Speech from the Throne was read on November 19th, laying out the legislative agenda of the Conservative gov't. Dealing with the economic crisis was the central focus of the speech. Parliament approved the speech in a vote which included the support of opposition members. And yet, at first step the gov't took to enact that agenda, the opposition ganged up and threatened to bring down the gov't. What gives? First they approved the agenda and then they didn't?

Come January 26th, the Liberals will be in the thick of a leadership campaign. The front runners will be competing for party delegate votes. Interestingly, Bob Rae is taking the lead in supporting the coalition, while his rival Michael Ignatieff is conspicuously avoiding the topic. The Liberal party will be sharply divided on the idea come January.

All which means, the Conservatives will pass their budget, the Liberals will continue to squabble amongst themselves, NDP leader Jack Layton will pout, Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe will feign outrage while inwardly smirking and the Parliamentary crisis will fade away.

Chalk this one up for Harper.

re: #266 Desert Dog

But, do you think if some terrorist assholes tried this in NY or LA or Chicago, that it would take 2 days to clear the hotel?

A good question. Edward Luttwak has an answer,

Ten men willing to die, and a pathetic security system

India really is a democratic country. Hence the prompt resignation of the country's top security official, home minister Shivraj Patil, in the wake of the Mumbai attacks. In his statement, Mr. Patil said he was assuming "ministerial" - formal, not substantive - responsibility. He should have said nothing at all: Since he assumed his post in 2004, some 7,000 people have been killed by terrorists in India without generating any known response by his ministry.

The Indian reality is that local police cannot be expected to react usefully to a terrorist attack - or, indeed, to any form of armed attack - as police might do in other countries (by at least sealing off the area, for example, and calling for more help). Local police hardly ever try to stop interreligious or intercaste violence and are very reluctant to engage anyone with a firearm; they are semi-illiterate constables who deal only with petty crime as they make their rounds, drinking free tea in cafés and accepting small gifts from shopkeepers for chasing away beggars.

The death of 7,000 people in terrorist incidents since 2004 - mostly inflicted by Muslim extremists - obviously called for the formation of a better-trained, better-paid, national anti-terrorist police. But none was created. Thus the forces available to fight the Mumbai terrorists were pathetically inadequate in quantity or quality...

...All in all, what happened was a confrontation between 10 trained men willing to fight and die, and a hopelessly inadequate security system. But India is, indeed, a democracy with a free press, and what will soon happen after all the usual recriminations will be the creation of a decentralized system backed by an information net. By contrast, those who live in Tel Aviv, New York or London need not fear a Mumbai episode. If 10 terrorists were to attack, local police would quickly deal with them.

So I guess that means the carriages with the wicker woven seat backs are gone too!

I use to love that ride, from Dover NJ to Hoboken NJ. No air conditioning, windows open in the summer, they did have heat in the winter.

On each train, a car would be designated as a "bar car" which meant a porter set up a "board" across two seat backs, and sold airline styled packaged booze.

I took the route a lot for a job I had from 1970-1972. Got to know most of the conductors, the riders, the weird riders, each car a circus in itself.

I read that. I still think India will be lagging in that area, even after this...

Forget the cops, if this happened in Arizona, there are enough armed citizens that would defend themselves (myself included). The days of sitting by and waiting to die are over. Kill or be killed should have been the motivation of the policemen in the train station. They could have saved countless lives.

Yea, when the north metro ran, on time or otherwise. I had cousins up in white plains, I hated that line, never on time, or completely broke down or on strike.

Ooooh, the whole Starbuck thing reminds me of a song a friend of mine wrote a while back.

The Sound of Cylons

Hello Starbuck my old friend,
We're under fire once again.
There's ninety-nine of them and two of us
But they couldn't hit a Metrobus
They're really stupid 'cause they've only got one eye
They're going to die.
Hear the sound of Cylons

Can't understand a word they say
The sound effects are overplayed.
Everyone says that they are really mean
I say they sound just like a voice machine.
They make strange noises, like a lightsaber on the fritz.
They're just the pits.
Hear the sound of Cylons

Now we have reached planet Earth
No more do we have to search.
But they followed us and now we go.
Nobody liked it so they cancelled our show.
No more Vipers, Battlestars or Daggetts.
They're all such maggots!
No more sound of Cylons.

I have some strange friends. It's great!

That is exactly what they are saying. The socialist NDP were figuratively and literally salivating at the possibility of gaining power. Not surprisingly, former NDP, now Liberal, Bob Rae is the leading pro-coalition supporter. I do hope he looses the leadership vote in April.

WriterMom: Yes, the Liberals & NDP seriously overplayed their hand. Two pairs do not beat a full house. That joker Duceppe is laughing out the other side of his face today. It's no coincidence there will be a provincial election in Quebec on Monday. This faux crisis plays well for the Seperatists.

Ok, I've said this before (maybe to you) and got in trouble, but Maglev is a novelty, not a viable rail systems, at least not for any "metro" or short runs under 250 miles.

And I have said this before, but the TGV French model is the best for short haul, high speed lines. Uses available rails (some mods on certain curves) and still reaches speeds up to about 180mph (actually can do over 200, but not used that much)

TGV will also move through suburban Metro systems. Many of the TGV lines in France service the new by suburbs and then continue on for the longer hauls to other parts of France. You can get from Paris to Lyon in about 2:15 minutes.

It's all in the construction of the carriage, not the rails or the stations or too much of the support systems.

Another "problem" with respect to India -- in 2002-2003 in Mumbai in one year there had been a total of 5,513 people killed -- not by terrorists but by the railroads...(the majority of the "accidents" occurred as a result of overcrowded trains and people falling out and getting run over.)

excerpts of two emails from the local Neighborhood Watch, received about 3 weeks apart (2nd one from yesterday):

A resident at the XXX00 block of (redacted) Drive was the victim of a burglary at about 2:00 p.m. and other neighbors reported seeing males, non-specific Americans, dressed well, with light shirt and dark pants, soliciting for a Central L.A. Youth activity (possible Boys Clubs) One claimed to be selling magazines and the other cleaning products. When advised that she was not interested, they became angry/upset and said "at least give us your money, or your car, why not one of your range-rovers?" They were further described as 22-26 years of age 5' 10" 200 lbs. carrying a black back-pack.

and yesterday's:

Last night, around 5:30pm, XXX was walking to the parking lot from Street Name’s side. When she turned the corner on 'Street', someone from across the street, hiding behind the trees, started running at her. At this point she noticed him running and he came up to her. He shouted, I need money, give me money. She responded with, “I have no cash”. At this point, the suspect got upset and yelled at her, “You have a Louis (Vitton) purse, don’t tell me you don’t have money”. She eventually found $10 in her purse, gave it to him, and again he got upset, responding, “what is this?, I need MONEY”. She told him that’s all she had and to please let her go. The suspect then ran off.

looks like the whole wealth redistribution thing isn't waiting until January...

I agree on the GPS but if you get someone to help you and they get their supervisor's supervisor, you can usually get some good help. It's not like the local ACE Hardware who definately know a lot and I much prefer to buy from but I like having the greater selection.

We've got a home grow hardware chain around Seattle, McClendon's. I go out of my way to go there. The quality at Home Depot sucks, I've had to take back a good percentage of stuff I bought there.

In an email that "Harvard" grad, Michael Ignatieff, claimed that having a coalition of NDP, Bloc Quebecois, and Liberals, was the only way "to ensure national unity." How ludicrous...but if anyone's ever read any of Ignatieff's books -- that's typical for Ignatieff -- he presents page after page of conflicting, glaring contradictions (all to which he appears to be happily oblivious)...(Ignatieff is a blithering idiot.)

Very interesting... the Liberals & their allies in the media keep pretending the Bloc isn't part of the coalition (even though it cannot win a vote or form a gov't without the Bloc's votes) .

Iggy is actually very smart, he's a former Harvard prof, writes wonky books, & etc... so he's not a blithering idiot. More like a blithering egghead.

excerpts of two emails from the local Neighborhood Watch, received about 3 weeks apart (2nd one from yesterday):

"I'll leave one of the range rovers to said charity in my will, boys"

this account of what these people went thru is horrifying. it is now apparent that waiting and hoping to negotiate w/ these scum is the wrong approach. so many lives could have been saved if the police had gone in immediately. just thinking abt. these monsters casually going from room to room hunting human beings is sickening. atrocious.
it is important now for civilians everywhere to consider how to save their lives in situations like this . here we had unarmed people left at the mercy of these fcking sob's. it reminds me of the scum on the airplanes on 9-11. no one did anything. they were told to do what the perps told them. sit quietly.
that has changed. any pos fcking around on a plane now gets his ass handed to him. by passengers.
we must not be sheeple around these savages. i know they had guns but at some point fighting back was the only hope. going along peacefully gets you in a heap of dead bodies.
people need to learn self-defense techniques. just a few people in that crowd could have made a difference by fighting back.
sometimes there is no one to protect you. everyone needs to prepare for that.
especially now.

Good analysis.
And if by some chance the opposition defeats the government on the Jan.27 budget vote, Harper will call an election and at that stage I doubt the Governor General would invite the Libs to form a government. A pissed-off electorate could then award the Conservatives a majority win.
Either way, it's looking much better for Harper than for that idiot loser Dion.

Exactly. The Liberals have been painted into a corner. Dion is toast. Stale soggy, warmed over milquetoast, to be precise. If the Liberals vote down the budget in January, Harper will call an election for 6 weeks hence, mid-March. Meanwhile, the Liberals will still be without a leader, as their convention is scheduled for April. To bad, so sad. Rather than trigger an election with outgoing doorknob Dion as their leader, the Liberals, or the less foolish among them anyway, will vote with the gov't.

His "works" make great reading, if you're looking for laughs...(the "rights revolution" was a real howler...) What I find problematic with Ignatieff is not so much his conclusions -- but with his argumentation -- how he gets from A to B...how he presents his "evidence" which he assumes is supporting his case (when oftentimes his "evidence" doesn't support his conclusions, it supports the opposite proposition, undermining his original position -- but he's blithely unaware), etc., etc.

re: #523 J.S.

from wikipedia

In The Rights Revolution, Ignatieff identifies three aspects of Canada's approach to human rights that give the country its distinctive culture: 1) On moral issues, Canadian law is secular and liberal, approximating European standards more closely than American ones. 2) Canadian political culture is socially democratic; Canadians take it for granted that citizens have the right to free health care and public assistance. 3) Canadians place a particular emphasis on group rights, expressed in Quebec's language laws and in treaty agreements that recognise collective aboriginal rights. "Apart from New Zealand, no other country has given such recognition to the idea of group rights," he writes.[9]

Ignatieff states that despite its admirable commitment to equality and group rights, Canadian society still places an unjust burden on women and gays and lesbians, and he says it is still difficult for newcomers (particularly of non-British descent) to form an enduring sense of citizenship. Ignatieff attributes this to the "patch-work quilt of distinctive societies," emphasizing that civic bonds will only be easier when the understanding of Canada as a multinational community is more widely shared.

I see what you mean! His arguments and evidence weigh against his conclusions. First he praises "group rights", then he blames the centerpiece of the group rights ideology, multiculturalism, for the lack of inclusion for newcomers!

re: #313 cartoonboy

I think the pc liberal Western terror apologists agenda is narcissistic: to flaunt their imagined superiority, to demonstrate that they are just more evolved then the masses. The more depraved and evil the people they protect, the more enlightened they must be. It's all about standing out from the crowd of unwashed rubes.

An excellent observation. What gets me is that the narcissism you mention is coupled with cowardice - I see very few of these "more evolved" people protesting down at the Indian consulates and embassy against the "truth serum" drugs that they are using on Baby Face. I don't have a problem with it, candidly, on the basis that there is compelling others from his team that are un accounted for and expected to launch an imminent attack. That and the fact that, while potentially hallucinatory the drugs the Indians use aren't known to have permanent effects. But they are banned here and in Europe, on only a week before the Mumbai slaughter, unsubstantiated news "reporting" was accusing the US of using such drugs at Gitmo and leftoids were up in arms.

Where are they now?

Is it wrong for the US to do such (even if it isn't) but OK for the Indians (who admit they are)?

No - we will only get the moral preening about how India was wrong to have drugged Baby Face long after the danger has passed.

IMO - "dissent is brave and patriotic" only works for me when there is some risk involved. These moralists of the left are simply cowards, which undermines the substance of their moral claims.

I'm wondering what our relations with Pakistan are going to be like under the Obama Admin and with the change from Musharraf to the current Pakistani admin. Personally, I have little faith in Pakistan right now (not like I ever had a lot of trust or faith in them), and I fear that if we don't line up with India strongly regarding the Mumbai situation then we are going to lose India as well.

India just inked a deal with Russia for the Russians to build 4 nuclear power plants in their country. I wonder why we didn't get that deal and just how much cozier India and Russia are going to become again.

Between the continuing GWOT and now the re-emergence of a Cold War with Russia, I worry that Obama and his Admin are going to be even flakier than Carter's and that could be disastrous not only for America but for a lot of our allies as well.

After reading that account, all I can say is EEEK! Pretty scary stuff. Reminds me of stuff that has happened in Israel ... stuff that gives me goosebumps to even think about. Terrorists running rampant in an apartment building, walking in and out of apartments shooting down anything that moved ... they missed the little girl who cried out from a window to her dad on the street ... "mommy's sleeping." Use the truth stuff on this guy. Then hang him.

Let's hope that Obama's elitism will play to the advantage of the defense of America. If enough Harvard Princeton scholars and "thinkers" develop a survival instinct, it might give our Dear Leader the kind of intellectual cover he needs to take a stand.

From the link at this thread to Harvard Crimson:

"If there existed any doubts that radical Islam poses one of the biggest threats to our time, let the horrifying news from Mumbai erase those. This is a threat far greater than the damage wrought by a dissatisfactory Bush administration or by domestic disagreements. It exists neither far ahead in the future, nor is it geographically far-flung. Last week’s attacks may have only struck Mumbai physically, but they were attacks on all of us. If ever there were a time to shed our preoccupation with political correctness, this is it. "
