And Now for Some Randy Newman

Video | Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 2:37:28 pm PST

A beautiful version of a song that’s been covered by several artists, from Randy’s new album Harps & Angels.

New Trek bicycles feature whisper-quiet, non-slip belts

"People are really finding bicycles to be a very simple solution to some very complex problems that they face every day," said Eric Bjorling, Trek's lifestyle brand manager. "Anything we can do in our design to really help them and help them live that lifestyle is probably better for both the consumers and us."

Bjorling said the new belts are a low-maintenance solution to a chain, which has roughly 3,000 parts including all the links and connectors.

Aside from the whisper-quiet ride, the lighter and longer-lasting carbon-fiber composite belts won't rust, can't be cut, won't stretch or slip and won't leave grease marks around your ankles. A guard over the belt-drive and the construction of the system makes getting your pants stuck an unlikely scenario, Bjorling said.

/will it show up at the Tour de France?

Heh. He mentions "Faust." I picked up the CD last week for $7.50, across the street at the used CD store. I didn't know anything about it, but the list of performers on it was irresistible. It helps that the proprietor's taste is different from mine. I got two Chris Whitely CDs out of the $2.00 bin last summer.

Planned Parenthood Tells 'Teen': Lie To Get an Abortion

A college student posing as a pregnant 13-year-old was told at a Planned Parenthood clinic to lie about the age of her baby's father to skirt Indiana laws on parental consent for abortion and on reporting child sex abuse.

According to a report in the Washington Times, Lila Rose, 20, went undercover as a 13-year old named "Brianna," who said she was pregnant by a 31-year old man. Rose, president of a pro-life organization at UCLA, recorded the interaction with a hidden camera; the video has been posted on YouTube.

Just bought "A Charlie Brown Christmas" ~ the original soundtrack by Vince Guaraldi (without the clicks and pops). His songs have such a great groove to them. What a huge talent he was.

He used to play in Menlo Park once a week and would play the Peanuts music for people who brought their children. He was terrific!

There are three major questions.,
1. What is the meaning of life?
2. Why does Billy Mays scream?
3. Who is Cristy Lane?

1. No Idea
2. He must be a lib, who thinks volume gets the point across better, and does not realize that screaming turns people off.
3. A VERY marginal USO singer from the Vietnam era, who was on FOX about a year or two ago. She had to be 80, looked like a deer in the headlights, and very badly lip synched a song.

re: #87 opnion

What is the meaning of life?

The Meaning of Life
by James Sedgwick

What is the meaning of water?

That question sounds silly because it has no context. To state a meaning is to state a relationship in a context. To a thirsty man, water can mean salvation. In a religious context, water can mean purification. In a flood, water can mean danger. Only when you state the context can you state the relationship that gives meaning to water.

Would that method work with the musty old question, "What is the meaning of life?" To find out, we need to set a context and find a relationship. Since human life is a conscious experience, the meaning would have to be in the relationship between the experience and the consciousness.

Can one think of lives from the past that had meaning? Of course: Jefferson’s life was all about establishing individual rights. Edison’s life was about inventing our modern world. Jefferson’s life had that meaning because he designed it that way. He knew what he wanted to do, and did it. Edison’s life had his meaning because he designed it that way. He knew what he wanted to do, and did it.

If by the meaning of life, I mean the relation between my mind and my experience, then the meaning of life is fulfillment. My mind sets a goal – survival or something more – and I aim for the goal. Since I have free will, I can decide what my life will be about. I can choose a purpose.

People with a purpose have chosen to give meaning to life. They have a standard. They can compare actions to the standard. Would doing that fit with my purpose in life? If so, do it. If not, skip it. Endless possibilities are narrowed down to a manageable number. Doubt is replaced with certainty.

You wonder about the meaning of life when you experience yours as random and arbitrary. You look for a meaning from outside. It can be found by looking inside, and using reason. Does music make you vividly alive, as if it above all gives life meaning? Then use music to energize your life. Be a musician. Does making a new discovery satisfy your soul above all else? Then make your life thrilling by organizing it around discovery. Be a researcher.

Every purpose gives meaning to your life. A lofty purpose means great effort and great reward. A normal purpose means organized effort and regular reward. An irrational purpose means pointless effort and illusory reward. The most common irrational purpose is power. To make control of others the purpose of your life would be to make frustration the meaning of life, since those others have free will.

If you have already lived half a lifetime without choosing a purpose, what can you do? You can ask yourself, "Have I lived at random, or not? Have I done worthwhile things, or not?" If life has not been all random, then it has partly followed an unstated purpose. Tell yourself what you were up to when you were most alive and least random. Admit to yourself the meaning of your life. Then decide to make it consistent, or change it to something better.

A life lived without any purpose goes in all directions and gets nowhere. It is a life without meaning. But most lives are not like that. Most lives wander around on the back roads while advancing bit by bit in some main direction. That direction is the central purpose and meaning of that life. The advantage of identifying the purpose is that you can get off the back roads and onto the freeway.

Op, when we're out of touch with PURPOSE, we're out of touch with MEANING...

IF the purpose of life is to know and love (That Which Created Us; fellow creatures and our Self-the-Created) THEN the meaning of life is in our knowledge and love, how we've developed and enhanced it for ourselves and for others...

...or omitted such enhancement of love & knowledge.

When I was younger, out of curiousity I once gave my pet mice a White Castle burger. They ate the bun & pickles, the runt mouse picked off the little onions and ate them. None of them touched the meat patty.

Yeah, I did try Nathan's just to see how they compared to a Chicago Vienna beef hot dog. It was not even close, the Vienna dog is wayyyy better.

LOL, I can't eat hot dogs, since I was a kid, and my Uncle John, nicknamed by us "Uncle Prick" told us that hot dogs are nothing but "Lips and assholes" I cannot eat them to this day.

I grew up on Chicago dogs which are out of this world. I tried a Nathan's when I was on the East Coast a couple years ago and was disappointed.....they were ok but didn't seem to have a crunch to them. Maybe my expectations were too high....

GTMA!

Jihad returns to kill & intimidate Americans for opposing them (as Obama-climate strait-jackets people from acknowledging this)

And the Supreme Court will reject challenges to his eligibility even before the electoral votes have been counted.

'Rabbi Meir Kahane - style slaughter of American physician in San Francisco. Jihadist sleeper-cell savages can't control themselves to not jump the gun & tip to their presence. But will liberal Bay Arean's color it as just another indignant Muslim bursting against a Zionist antagonist?

What greater domestic jihad-cell's terrorism will the cops & media's whitewashing fail to uncover this time? The plot to destroy the Trans-America building? The Golden Gate Bridge? Union Station?

The spirit of murdered pro-Israel physician Dr. Dan Kliman inspires Jewish & Christian opponents of brazen Islamists thumbing their noses outside the Israeli Embassy in L.A.

They photographed my filming this, in case I disappear, too.

If we are doing East Coast vs Chicago, I really like Chicago pizza better, but it probably goes to what you are used to.

Wow, wow I am in my mid forties. Of course I remember Lassie. But even as a kid I always kinda shook my head in amazement as to how dumb that human family was vis a vis a "dog" that outperforms them mentally.

Yeah. It's kinda like "Jurrassic Park". (Geez. Wouldja' just shoot the goddamn dinasour.)

Actually, when you cook them, put a pot of boiling water in the oven with the sliders. The moisture will make it taste more like what you remember. NEVER nuke'em.

That's the problem, I did nuke em. It was in a hotel room, with no oven.

Some of Neil's work is important.

I have seen the needle and the damage done.

I quite like Heart of Gold and one of the live versions of Like a Hurricane, but "important" music is normally "self-important". The Needle and the Damage Done would drive me to drugs - give me Chinese Rocks by Johnny Thunders any day of the week (and Heroin by the Velvets at weekends)

Yep, I understand that sentiment a lot. But then I know that Young was diagnosed with diabetes as a child[6] and a bout of polio at the age of 6 left him with a weakened left side; he still walks with a slight limp. And he suffered from a brain annuerysm in 2005. [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
And he has written some pretty damn good music, too.

2008 will be coolest year of the decade

Global average for 2008 should come in close to 14.3C, but cooler temperature is not evidence that global warming is slowing, say climate scientists.

Hmmm.. I wonder what would indicate a cooling trend. I guess we have to wait for a long term trend.

And 2008 would have been a scorcher in Charles Dickens's time - without human-induced warming there would have been a one in a hundred chance of getting a year this hot. "For Dickens this would have been an extremely warm year," he said. On the flip side, in the current climate there is a roughly one in 10chance of having a year this cool.

Hmmm... what has changed to make 2008 cooler? Certainly all those Prius' and windmills right? Couldn't possibly have anything to do with the LACK of sunspot activity!

Agreed. Gimme a Giordano's any day of the week over that east coast stuff they call pizza. Then there's always Italian Beef with cheddar on a croissant from Portillo's. It'll give you a coronary, but it's worth it! :-d

I know what you mean. But, when I was young (and allowed to touch their stereo) I used to listen to this album with 'headphones' (great ones - blocked out all sound but the music) and it made me want to live in THAT world!
