Missile Defense System Success

US News | Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 4:50:14 pm PST

Here’s a great post at Closing Velocity on today’s successful test of the Ground-Based Interceptor missile defense system: ‘MARK INDIA!’ = Mark Intercept: GBI Successfully Kills Inbound ICBM In Landmark Test.

As I mentioned yesterday, this test was tremendously important for several reasons:

* It was the first flight test of the GBI since Sept. 2007.

* GBI’s are the interceptors we plan to install in Poland. The US-based GBI tested today is a 3-stage interceptor, while the European-based GBI will be a simpler 2-stage version (basically just the upper 2 stages of today’s GBI).

* President-elect Obama has repeatedly said he would only support deploying “proven” missile defense technology to Europe. Okie-freakin-dokie.

Most excellent news, but this probably still isn't a "proven system" to Obama.

The sad thing is that Missile defense will be automatically cut back by his administration, even as the nuclear djinn creeps futher out of its bottle and spreads worldwide.
The beauty of these systems is that they were designed in layers, and to overcome all of the kneejerk criticism to Reagan's Star wars. They are workable, and what the hell doesn't make sense about protecting people from nuclear tipped ICBMS?

The chances are that some of those nuclear tipped ICBMs will fly this century, hadn't we better be prepared?

14 Thanos  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 4:59:10pm
The target was successfully tracked by a transportable AN/TPY-2 radar located in Juneau, Alaska, a U.S. Navy Aegis BMD ship with SPY-1 radar, the Upgraded Early Warning Radar at Beale Air Force Base, Calif., and the Sea-Based X-band radar. Each sensor sent information to the fire control system, which integrated the data together to provide the most accurate target trajectory for the interceptor

Here's a pic of the other radar used in this system just for DPRK.

Ronald W. Reagan Missile Defense Site

46 gman  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 5:07:46pm

This was from a statement Obama released last year:

“The Bush Administration has been developing plans to deploy interceptors and radar systems in Poland and the Czech Republic as part of a missile defense system designed to protect against the potential threat of Iranian nuclear armed missiles. If we can responsibly deploy missile defenses that would protect us and our allies we should – but only when the system works. We need to make sure any missile defense system would be effective before deployment. The Bush Administration has in the past exaggerated missile defense capabilities and rushed deployments for political purposes. The Bush Administration has also done a poor job of consulting its NATO allies about the deployment of a missile defense system that has major implications for all of them. We must not allow this issue to divide “new Europe” and “old Europe,” as the Bush Administration tried to do over Iraq.

i.e. he has no intention of deploying a missile defense system in Poland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. military said on Friday it conducted a successful test of its missile defense system, but the target failed to deploy measures that experts said could have helped it avoid destruction.

This ought to give the Russians something to gnash their teeth over.

Which isn't a bad thing at all. Their expansionist nature has been funded over the last couple of years by sky-high oil prices, and like the Middle East they haven't done a thing to diversify their economy with that stream of wealth - although they're in much better shape than the ME in terms of diversification to begin with. With oil hitting around $40 a barrel today and still falling, it's well below the $50 mark the Russians need in order to keep their current budgets intact. So their style is going to be crimped, big time.

Not as badly as Venezuela and Iran, which have budgets based on $75 and $90 oil, respectively, along with antsy opposition movements who they've been buying off with oil revenue and who will now be finding themselves as hungry and empty handed as ever.

Even an economic downturn seems to have a silver lining.

So today, the entire West Coast of North America was a massive test range. Naval units, an Army tactical radar, and a huge Air Force radar all supplying targeting data to two interceptor batteries thousands of miles apart with one of those batteries remotely commanding the other as our largest interceptor takes out a hostile ICBM. In space. Ho. Ly. Crap.

I was thinking about this the other day - what if we are in a new battle? A financial battle. There are forces hellbent on bringing down America. They tried terrorism and GW shut them down.

The new battlefront is our financial markets - and it does not look good. But what if our counter attack is to drop oil prices? I mean in the toilet. That will cripple our enemies financially - the same as they are currently trying to do to us.

Who will hold out the longest?

94 newscaper  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 5:24:38pm

The great "nuanced" thinkers are incapable of understanding that a missile defense system does not have to be 100% accurate to be effective, either as a deterrent to attack (by unacceptably increasing the enemy's uncertainty from his POV) or in seriously reducing the damage from an actual attack.

Killing these programs when they essentially work, now, is treason in my book.

140 newscaper  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 5:32:08pm

Regarding...

I think Obama and his groupies will not deploy this technology as it will be "too provocative".

That used to royally piss me off back in Reagan's day the 'reality-based' community didn't see how SDI couldn't realistically be both "provocative" AND ineffective.

Actually, the fact they're not 100% effective is a good thing, in that it lets the Russians know that, although they'd be unable to deliver a knockout blow, neither would we be able to attack them with utter impunity either.

In my book that sounds like a *good* thing.

That said, I can see that basing them right on Russia's doorstep may be unnecessarily antagonizing.

One worry I've had about these systems is 'force protection', security.
The difficulty is that the components of the system themselves become targets -- and they don't have to be attacked with ICBMs. I hope someone on our side is being sufficiently paranoid.

I'm sure it is just a coincidence. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along, move along...

Missile Defense Takes Off

The ABL program places a megawatt-class, high-energy Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) on a modified Boeing 747-400F aircraft to detect, track and destroy all classes of ballistic missiles. ABL also can pass information on launch sites, target tracks and predicted impact points to other layers of the global ballistic missile defense system.

This week, Boeing and the Missile Defense Agency announced another successful test — the first ground test of the entire weapon system integrated aboard the aircraft, including the firing of a high-energy laser through the ABL beam control/fire control system. Earlier tests had unit-tested other components of the system, particularly the ability to find, track and target missiles in flight.

re: #112 karmic_inquisitor

I think we need to reexamine the whole "white flag" thing. Why is a "white" flag a sign of peaceful intent? Why not a black flag? Or a red flag?

Hmmmmmm.

/ So - do you guys think I can get a job in a university somewhere with that?

A red flag is an old privateering badge. Ships that were intercepted by a privateer flying a red flag were expected to heave to and surrender without a fight. French privateers called it "Jolie Rouge," which was eventually corrupted by English privateers/pirates into "Jolly Roger."

If they resisted, the red flag came down and a black flag went up, signifying that no quarter would be given.

By the end of the 17th century, most privateers and pirates were flying black flags as a matter of course.

Let's hope so. I have never understood the mentality that if a missile shield wasn't 100% perfect that it wasn't worth doing at all. Gun controllers are fond of saying "If it saves one life..." it is worth it.

Maybe the test wasn't that successful after all :

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. military said on Friday it conducted a successful test of its missile defense system, but the target failed to deploy measures that experts said could have helped it avoid destruction.

Also, Obama's National Security Adviser Gen. Jim Jones, as a former NATO Commander has lots of contacts in Europe.

Boswellia Serrata (Frankincense) is a good anti-inflammatory as well. Takes a while.

Frankincense is one of my favorite oils to use during massage. It has a strong odor, so I cut it with lavender. Very good for stress and "inflammation" for the whole nervous system. Clary sage is also fabulous.

Despite earlier furor, Palin's shopping continued

Despite the furor over a $150,000 campaign shopping spree for vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, it appears the Republican party continued to spend money on clothing and accessories for her in the contest's final weeks.

New campaign reports show the latest buys ranged from $4,383 at Saks Fifth Avenue and $2,130 at Nieman Marcus, to $148 at Victoria's Secret locations in Philadelphia and Cincinnati

Getting back on topic a minute: the major reasons Russia doesn't like this is that it tightens our alliances in Europe, and it takes away the threat of a "snapshot".

What's a snapshot? Single tactical use of one ICBM against a defensive front. With a single shot, telegraphed shortly ahead of time via a hotline there would be a lot of condemnation and crap to come, but a nuclear response would be unlikely. It's one of the bully sticks Russia has against East Europe and we are taking it out of the pile of threats.

A custom engraved CZ550 rifle in .308 Winchester.

The odd thing is, I just bought the same rifle, in the same caliber at about the same time as this one was being presented to President Bush. Mine doesn't have all the fancy engraving on it like Dubya's though...

Meanwhile in WA State the saga continues....

Anti-Religion Sign Returned To State Capitol

The controversial anti-religion sign that was mysteriously removed from state Capitol Rotunda has been returned to its place in Olympia after it was turned in to a Seattle radio station.
The sign was at the Capitol at 6:15 a.m. Friday, but by 7:30 a.m., it had disappeared, the Capitol building manager told the Olympian.
Later Friday morning, the receptionist at the country radio station KMPS in Seattle said the sign was turned in to the station by a man who said, "this is for Ichabod," and handed her the sign. Ichabod Caine is a show host at the radio station.

What does that mean?

Let's say one of their neighbors and they got belligerent, and troops went to the front. Maybe Russia invades Georgia, or whatever. If the Russian forces were successfully repelled they could use a nuke as a "defensive" measure. One nuke fired during a war would probably not initiate WWIII nuclear fashion. Remember there's a precedent for limited use of Nukes in wartime, we set it.

No matter how big a conventional force the Eastern Euros gather they couldn't stand against that.

Nuclear sucker punch. Say Russia is really angry at Ukraine. By the time the President has time to say "WTF are you doing!?" the deed is doen and the Russians got what they want.

Here is an interesting series of excerpts from Strategy Page on the Poland ABM and European natural gas supplier issues with Russia.
"Russia is making a lot of noise about the U.S. anti-missile systems being installed in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia believes the anti-missile systems are meant to negate Russia's nuclear weapons (the only really effective military weapon Russia has left). East European countries are fine with that, but the main purpose of the anti-missile system is to knock down the handful of ballistic missiles Iran might be able to fire at Europe in the near future. Nevertheless, Russia sees the anti-missile system as a threat, and has made a series of announcements about new ICBMs being developed that will negate the anti-missile system. In fact, Russia has not been able to develop a new ICBM design, to replace it's "heavy" Cold War era ICBMs (the SS-18 and SS-19). All it really has is the Topol-M (SS-27 in NATO parlance), which was developed at the end of the Cold War. The Topol-M was modified to serve as a new sea launched ICBM (Bulava) and as a heavy ICBM (RS-24) to replace the elderly SS-18s and SS-19s. There is no money for a major new ICBM development program, but Russia can afford to create some scary press releases."
and
"November 23, 2008: Natural gas is again being used as a diplomatic weapon. Two years ago, Ukraine was paying bargain rates ($130 per thousand cubic meters, which is equivalent to $74 per barrel of oil, a price that is nearly half what natural gas went for on the world market). After much diplomatic pushing and shoving, Russia raised the price to $179.50. Now Russia wants to boost the price to $400, and also collect $2.4 billion in unpaid (and disputed) gas bills. Ukraine complains that Russia is demanding higher prices from them than Western Europeans pay. There, the price of natural gas is based on the price of oil. That price has declined over 60 percent this year. At most, Ukraine was expecting to pay $250 per thousand cubic meters of natural gas in 2009. These negotiations make Western Europe nervous, because there were threats of interrupting supplies of Russian gas to Western Europe. Russia can't stop gas shipments to Ukraine without cutting off supplies for Western Europe. Such interruptions were a major issue when Russia first proposed selling natural gas to Western Europe. Russia promised that the gas supply would never become a political issue. Now it is, and West Europe's traditional distrust of Russia is revived. Western Europe is paralyzed by fear of losing a quarter of its natural gas supplies. Two years ago, when Russia cut Ukraine off, the Ukrainians simply diverted gas meant for Western European customers. "

What Obama, Pelosi and Reid don't want you to know: the November job loss numbers are a lot worse than what was announced. I wonder why?

Well, the econ indicators don’t point to anything good. The Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing (36.2%) and Non-Manufacturing (37.3%) Indices point to an economy, and thus a job market, that’s in the tank. Index readings above 50% mean expansion, and below 50% mean contraction. A reading below about 42% in each case indicates recession. This POR (Pelosi-Obama-Reid) Economy we’ve been living in since June, and which was called by yours truly in early July, is something else, isn’t it?

It gets worse:

Nancy, Barry, and Harry must be so proud. It’s simply amazing what promising to choke off a country’s energy supplies (all three of them did so in June), promising to radically raise taxes (Obama did, and the others have been on board, for at least 18 months before the presidential election), and having a decades-in-the-making wreck of the housing and mortgage-lending industries come to a head (a Democratic Party group effort going back to the late 1970s) can do.

Never forget this: They broke it.

Now let’s see if they can fix it.

“Funny” thing: They can’t, and they know they can’t, without backing off many of the very things they promised to do. It’s already in progress: Obama’s punitive tax increases on the top 5% are being deferred, and Obama has dropped the windfall profits tax on “evil” oil companies that sent his crowds into spasms of applause during the campaign.

Go read the whole thing. The tables he posted are horrifying.

The decay in January through June averaged 183,000. In September and October, as the likelihood of “something” happening become more possible, it went to 423,000 and 402,000. Then the wheels came off in November. Instead of the +313,000 that took place last year, employers actually shed 634,000 jobs — an ugly, stunning wrong-way swing of 947,000 jobs.

Gee, I wonder what “something” took place in November to cause this?

What, indeed?

Actually, during the '80s one of our potential warfighting strategies would have been to use tactical nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe to give us time to stabilize that front. We never have had a "no first use" policy on nukes.

And the Russian tanks outnumbered us around ten to one. A "no first use" policy would have made conventional more likely. And no matter what our stated policy was (or the Russian's for that matter) nukes would have been very much on the table if we'd had a big dust-up in Eastern Europe.

A Marxist speaks on Obama.

Obama is a very strategic thinker. He knew precisely what it would take to get elected and didn't blow it. He used community organizing methods to mobilize a base consisting of many people who had never voted before or who regularly don't vote. Few other candidates in my lifetime have taken this road, which is contrary to conventional political wisdom. (Paul Wellstone was a wonderful exception to the rule.) But he also knew that what he said had to basically play to the center to not be run over by the press, the Republicans, scare centrist and cross-over voters away. He made it.

[snip]

And I agree with this strategy. Anything else will court sure defeat. Move on the stuff you can to a small but significant extent, gain support and confidence. Leave the military alone because they're way too powerful. For now, until enough momentum is raised. By the second or third year of this recession, when stimulus is needed at the bottom, people may begin to discuss cutting the military budget if security is being increased through diplomacy and application of nascent international law.

Our job now is to organize both inside and outside the Demo party. There's already a big battle in the Demo party at every level. Here in the New Mexico State Legislature, the progressives are challenging the conservative Dems for leadership; the same is true in Congress. If you can't stand to work in the party, work on putting mass pressure on issues such as healthcare and jobs and the war from outside.

Mark William Rudd As the war escalated, Mark Rudd worked with other youth movement leaders to take SDS in a more militant direction. Together, they formed a radical, violence-oriented organization, referring to themselves collectively as "Weatherman."

Employment shrank in virtually every part of the economy — factories, construction companies, financial firms, accounting and bookkeeping, architectural and engineering firms, hotels and motels, food services, retailers, temporary help, transportation, publishing, janitorial and building maintenance, and even waste management. Barry of Arabia

"President-elect Barack Obama's aides say he is considering making a major foreign policy speech from an Islamic capital during his first 100 days in office," the New York Times reports. Problem is, where?

Clearly it would be cheating for Mr. Obama to fly to Detroit, talk to Dearborn's 30,000 Arab residents and call it a day

...But there is a city that, although not a national capital, is for all intents and purposes the capital of all Islam--a place where Obama could credibly speak to all Muslims, Sunni and Shiite, from Morocco to Malaysia to Michigan.

Not only that, but Obama's very presence--along with that of his secretary of state, chief of staff, the rest of his entourage and the traveling press from all over the world--would demonstrate that Islam is a more tolerant faith than many Westerners, including this columnist, have thought.

Is it really that simple? Can we be serious? Yes, we can.

All the new president has to do is give a speech in Mecca.

583 lostlakehiker  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 7:04:44pm

It's probably impossible to protect against the kind of launch Russia could put in the sky. What with penetration aids, MIRVing, and the like, they'd get a fair fraction of their stuff through any defense we could mount.

If we spent a bucket of money upgrading our interception capabilities, they could spend far less upgrading their penetration capabilities and we'd be back where we started.

We aren't aiming at that kind of defense anyhow. How do we persuade the Russians of this? We give them some access to our strategic thinking and to the parameters of what we can do. If they ever do decide to launch at us, it will mean that more of their stuff gets through. So what? Nothing of Russia would be left to enjoy that, and they know it, and we know they know it. So they won't launch, and we know that, and they ought to know we know it.

The worry is that somebody off in Syria or Iran or Pakistan, some day down the road, will throw caution to the winds and light off a few rockets and send them our way or toward our friends. That's something a missile defense system might be able to handle. Today's test is encouraging.

Every state has a duty, I would argue, to do what it can, within the limits of affordability, to make it harder for rogue states and stateless organizations to inflict massive damage using modest or trivial resources. Not to excuse al Qaeda for 9-11, but we would have been wise to have airliner cabin doors that by-gum locked. Having a missile defense system that can stop 1 or 3 or maybe 10 shots falls in that same category.

Bull's-Eye

UPDATE: The Missile Defense Agency announced today that its Ground-based
Midcourse Defense system conducted a successful intercept of a ballistic
missile target over the Pacific Ocean.

According to the agency's statement:

For this test, a threat-representative target missile was launched from
Kodiak, Alaska at 3:04pm (EST). This long-range ballistic target was tracked by several land- and sea-based radars, which sent targeting information to the interceptor missile. At 3:23pm (EST) the Ground-Based Interceptor was launched from the Ronald W. Reagan Missile Defense Site, located at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The interceptor's
exoatmospheric kill vehicle was carried into the target's predicted trajectory in space, maneuvered to the target, performed discrimination, and intercepted the threat warhead.

This was the first time an operational crew located at the alternate fire control center at Ft. Greely, Alaska remotely launched the interceptor from Vandenberg AFB. In previous interceptor launches from Vandenberg, military crews at the fire control center at Schriever AFB, Colo. remotely launched the interceptor.

Each sensor sent information to the fire control system, which integrated the data together to provide the most accurate
target trajectory for the interceptor.

As Inside Missile Defense reported in May, MDA retooled the program’s flight-test lineup following the last delay in the intercept test schedule:

FTG-4, the intercept test originally scheduled for the fourth quarter of
fiscal year 2007 -- which had been pushed back to the second quarter of FY-08, and then pushed back again from this summer to early autumn -- has been renamed FTG-5, according to MDA spokesman Rick Lehner.

A telemetry unit aboard the exoatmospheric kill vehicle failed a recent
electrical test, necessitating its replacement and causing the
intercept-test delay, Lehner told IMD May 14.

[...]

One missile defense critic didn't wait for the test to take place. Phil Coyle, a senior adviser at the Center for Defense Information, sent out an e-mail to reporters last night stating:

• If there were a credible threat, U.S. missile defenses can't deal with it
anyway. If Iran or North Korea believed that U.S. missile defenses were effective, they would simply build more missiles or use decoys and countermeasures. That's what's behind the test scheduled for tomorrow, but if successful it won't prove what the MDA will say it proves.

• U.S. missile defenses have no demonstrated effectiveness to defend Europe or the U.S. under realistic operational conditions. U.S. missile defenses lack the ability to deal with decoys and countermeasures, lack demonstrated effectiveness under realistic operational conditions, and lack the ability
to handle attacks involving multiple missiles.

• Proposed U.S. missile defenses in Europe are threatening to Russia, and are causing the Cold War with Russia to be reignited. Proposed space-based missile defenses are also threatening to Russia, as well as China.

• Can America depend on missile defenses for its security? Unfortunately the answer is no. The United States has been trying unsuccessfully to develop effective missile defenses for over 60 years, and we still don't know how to deal with a realistic threat. Fortunately we don't have a real
threat unless you want to worry about Russia or China someday, and with their missiles Russia and China already can overwhelm the most futuristic missile defenses the Pentagon can imagine.

[so now we know where the turd in the punchbowl came from]

Yeah. I'm really worried about the next four years. It occured to me today that the reason Hillary was ready to jump on the Obama bus was because she didn't expect there to be another election. Like, ever. One man, one vote, one time. Isn't that one of the DNC's planks?

I really don't think it will go that far. If Obama / Reid / Pelosi try to much the the '10 blacklash will be impressive in its scale and magnitude. Obama will have a hostile conservative congress to deal with.

Obama may think he has a mandate, but his mandate is anti-GWB, no pro his agenda. The "true believers" who voted Obama are few and far between. The majority of Obama voters are yellow dog dems, or to ill-informed to make a rational decision or "independents" who couldn't vote McCain. Very few of those will tolerate a hard left governance.

We own a lot of guns, true, but that isn't a guarentee that it won't happen here. It's just one more hurdle that they have to get across on the way to a People's Republic of North America. It is why the Left want gun control so badly. The question is, what would we really do if the Congress outlawed the civillian ownership of guns next year, and gave us, say, 90 days to comply with the law?

Back in the early '90's the Clinton Administration had a questionair given to some marines at 29 Palms. The upshot of it was a question asking the marines if they would fire on American civillians in the name of gun control. That kind of blew up in their face when it got out. I never heard any official results, but the scuttlebutt was that it basically split 50-50.

I know that some military officers asked themselves what they would do in that event. The answers went from comply with the orders all the way to fire on other members of the military when they tried to enforce the orders.

Where would the military fall if that happens next year? If the bulk of the military backs the government, they will eventually win. If the military comes apart, well, the last time we played that game they called it the Civil War.

As a deterrent, missile defense is too reactive and unreliable. It is a 21st century version of the Maginot Line. I wish American policy makers focused more on upgrading America's nuclear deterrent than on placing a handful of interceptors in Eastern Europe. Assuming the interceptors worked flawlessly, fixed interceptor sites could be easily neutralized by Russian special forces with suitcase nukes.

In the 1980's the Soviets shit themselves when we deployed Pershing and Cruise missiles to Europe (to counterbalance a much larger Warsaw Pact nuclear threat). Those missiles were mobile and could hit and destroyed Command and Control bunkers around Moscow. There was no defense against them and the Soviet political leadership knew it.

The presence of those missiles made the Soviet political political leadership think twice about engaging in any mischief. That's real deterrence.

I hope not. You're gonna get broke. You're missing the long term trend because of the "noise" or runs of luck. Behind those runs of luck there's a bias toward the house. You lose.

It's the same with global warming. Behind the zigs and zags in solar output, cloud formation, and many other things we can't track or don't understand, there's this bias towards warmer, courtesy of the undeniably extra, unquestionably greenhouse, gas CO2.

If this winter is cold, that doesn't prove anything more than if you win a couple of tosses at the table. If glaciers advance this year, or if the north polar icecap recovers a fraction of its losses that have piled up over the last decade or two, that doesn't prove much either. You have to average things out on a 10, 20, or 50 year scale to see the basic trend through the noise.

Long story short, he flushed out a coyote or two the past couple of years. Not too long ago he chased one then came back after running for a while. I was putting the lead back on him and noticed he was acting pretty sublime, you know not overly excited. I clicked the lead on him and noticed as I looked down he was pretty focused on someting. I think very few in the military would go along. They'd either refuse the illegal orders and sit in the barracks and dare an administration to do that, or actively say our duty is the constitution and defend it. Our military isn't a mindless tool like 3rd world thugs use, ours thinks.

"Pretty willey animilas those coyotes."

Yes they are. Our daughter walks their dogs near their home. They live on a pretty hill in Los Angeles where they are nice condos and big open areas nearby, full of wildlife. The coyotes really check that one particular dog out. Seem to know that she's one of them ha ha They can't take them off leash over where they are but it's a nice area for walking anyway.

We've had a big coyote problem around here of late. They seem to be packing up and carrying a lot of pets away. Sad.

I have faith in the common sense of our troops. No officer worth his or her salt will give an order that they know won't be obeyed, and an officer giving that order could very well find him- or herself in the crosshairs.

I also have faith in the survival sense of our politicians. They are very well aware that no politician will survive giving such an order, and that is meant literally.

Before Heller, some localities were able to get away with it... and some (like Chicago) are still trying, not that it does them any good (homicides in Chicago exceed combat deaths in Iraq).

Those thoughts, however optimistic, don't keep me from stockpiling ammunition. That's an investment better than gold.

In California, so called "assault rifles" (mostly anything with a detachable magazine) have been illegal for a decade. The state didn't just ban new sales, but made posession illegal. They basically gave us four options:
Destroy the rifle
Surrender the rifle to a law enforcement agency in exchange for $230
Sell the rifle to a licensed California "assault weapon" dealer
Dispose of the rifle out of state

Our then AG, who is now a local congresscritter (Dan Lungren), added SKS 10 round rifles to the ban list in 1998. He's supposedly a conservative, but I think he was posturing for the gubernatorial race that year.

Intelligent men produce better quality sperm research has shown.

Dr Allan Pacey, Senior Lecturer in Andrology, University of Sheffield, said: "The fact that it's possible to detect a statistical relationship between intelligence and semen quality in adult men probably says more about the co-development of brain and testicles when the man was in his mother's womb, and therefore how well they both function in adult life, rather than suggesting that playing Sudoku can somehow stimulate more sperm to be produced.

Surprise, surprise, the politicians are ready to cut a "bridge loan" deal with the auto makers. This will be a never ending subsidy.

Talks Between White House, Congress Could Yield $15B for Auto Industry

WASHINGTON -- Jolted by the loss of thousands of jobs, congressional Democrats and the White House reached for agreement Friday on about $15 billion in bailout loans for the beleaguered auto industry. President Bush warned that at least one of the Big Three carmakers might not survive the current economic crisis.

Several officials in both parties said the breakthrough on a long-stalled bailout came after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bowed to Bush's demand that the aid come from a fund set aside for the production of environmentally friendlier cars. The California Democrat spoke to White House chief of staff Josh Bolten during the day to signal her change in position, they added.

The developments came as desperate auto executives pleaded for a second day with lawmakers for loans to help them survive, and the government reported the worst single month's job loss in 34 years.

Pelosi's office issued a statement saying legislation would come to a vote in the House next week. The Senate is also scheduled to be in session to consider steps to aid Detroit's Big Three.

"Congress will insist that any legislation include rigorous and ongoing oversight to guarantee that taxpayers are protected and that resources are directed to ensure the long-term viability and competitiveness of the American automobile industry," Pelosi's statement said.

I thought the UAW would get their payoff. Direct from your savings account to their pocket, via Washington.

(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any ONE of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.

Note that bayonets are not a characteristic of an assault weapon, so I can still own a Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine.

Our then AG, who is now a local congresscritter (Dan Lungren), added SKS 10 round rifles to the ban list in 1998. He's supposedly a conservative, but I think he was posturing for the gubernatorial race that year.

IIRC, that law has lapsed, though the Legislature, last I heard, is trying to revive it.

The issue was "scary-looking guns," no matter the magazine capacity. the authors of that bill knew nothing about firearms.

That's another reason there are fewer cars sold - better quality means less need for replacement vehichles. Dems and Obama think they are going to wrangle us like a herd of cows - but they are in for a giant surprise.

The Big Three are failing because their past successes and hence their production and marketing strategies have been based on the outdated assumption that consumers would continue to tolerate high prices, planned obsolescence and inferior products.
Maybe Congress won't simply bail them out now just to have them fail again after comrad Obama is inaugurated.

Then our guys in blue killed a dozen perps last year after their tazers were taken away and came under even harsher criticism for excessive force. Now the department has approved plans to buy 1000 tazers with confiscated drug money. Sort of like the EPA banning pepper spray against Grizzlies so everyone went back to the old standby of the .357 magnum.

Went prone with the bipod, lit it off, and he and the gun ended up about 1 foot back from where they started! Now, he is all wire and gristle- 60+ former biker, speed and whiskey drinker, but he gave his remaining tickets away to spectators. Regarding the "Big Three":

There's no way they all survive and no guarantee that any of them survive. It's a bayonet thrust to American manufacturing and a legitimate national security issue. You think unemployment is bad now? The trickle down from one or more of these companies will result in a cascade of supplier failures and up to three million more jobs lost. All that said, it's arrogant Detroit's, with a big shove from the UAW, own fault and this has been brewing for decades. Compete or lose.

So, whatever happens next, there's going to be a lot more pain.

What is the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere by human activity?
What is the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere by non-human activity?
What is the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere?
What are the rates of CO2 re-uptake by all the various processes?
What is the contribution to temperature increase per unit increase of CO2?
What is the mechanism of that contribution?
What is the contribution to temperature increase by non-CO2 causes?
Why does the data show the change in average earth temperature does not follow the CO2 level but rather leads it?

When you ask enough questions, the answers become less certain. The science is not done. The matter is far from settled.

Global warming is cyclical, and it's more than likely heliocentric as opposed to anthropocentric.

Yep - dammed if they do or don't.

Then I could go on a long rant about the politics of numbers and District Attorneys "deals" with perps - turning them back out on the streets while counting it as a conviction. - So the numbers look good for reelection. Drives LEOs/and law abiding citizens nuts.

But I won't.

A .50 sniper rifle is a mite heavy for hunting anything except people, so CA might be justified in the ban. The Geneva convention specifies the .50 machine gun is not to be used against personnel but against vehicles and objects. Over the last two decades the US threw that rule out the window. The Ma Deuce is just to effective a weapon to give up mates.

There is small but enthusiastic group that takes pleasure in poking holes in paper from about 1000 yards away. With the investment that any such rifle represents, with the attendant ammo and gear, the folks who buy them are NOT going to do anything that would get their toys taken away, so CA is not justified!

True words while I am happy that Franken isn't pouring acid on our wounds the practicle result is that there is no filibuster threat. We have a on party gov't from the extreme left and the SCOTUS is gone for the next twenty years. Anything can happen.

Saw some lizards were going on about the Armed Forces and Posse Comitatus before. Smell the coffee and stop wasting time with delusions. People wasted time going on about how PA or Carolina or Ohio would "never" vote for BO. It wasn't all fraud and it happened. There is an almost total information lockdown from the left. The armed forces will obey orders, law enforcement will obey orders, any people who think that reviving 1990's militia groups is an answer are simply deranged. Withdrawing into the hills or withdrawing into self pity is not the answer. Get out and get involved in your communities, your schoolboards and your local, not global world policy programs, but local life and politics.

The 'hunting' argument is what the gun grabbers use to erode our rights. 856 cincinnati_kid37  Fri, Dec 5, 2008 8:44:59pm

Actually, the questionable part of missile defense gets serious when you start talking about multiple warhead missiles, especially in large numbers and also employing decoys.

Multiple warheads are deployed from the host missile on the way down - the most difficult time of interception.

Granted we wouldn't expect this from Iran, but Russia is a different story.

I am pretty much convinced that even for an armed populace, the chance of effective alteration of an overbearing government is unlikely because of the difficulty of communicating and coordinating any real action. Ironic too that one of the biggest obstacles would probably be the 'Patriot Act'. A bunch of small local groups might be able to effect change in a limited local area but unless the action was widespread and well coordinated the end result would just be a lot of dead 'gun nuts'. IMHO

Fact is that with strategic weapons the more you have the safer everyone is. The big threat is a temptation for an enemy to attempt a decapitating 1st strike. multiple redundant and survivable systems are much safer. The only exception is primitave places that have inadequate security. We were much safer 25 years ago when we had twice as many weapons.
