Famed Pinup Girl in Critical Condition
LOS ANGELES - Quintessential 1950s pinup girl Bettie Page is hospitalized in Los Angeles with a critical case of pneumonia, her longtime friend and lawyer said Friday.
"She's been hospitalized with pneumonia. She's critically ill," said Mark Roesler, who is also the 85-year-old Page's business agent. She was hospitalized three weeks ago, he said.
Roesler would not say where Page was being treated, saying only she was in the Los Angeles area.
Page, 85, was born in Nashville as one of six children. According to a biography on her Web site, Page worked as a hairdresser and clothes-washer as a child to help support the family. Her mother placed Page and her two sisters in an orphanage when she was 10.
While spending time in various community centers as a teenager, she learned to cook and sew, eventually making her own bikinis and costumes. She graduated near the top of her class in high school and studied education at Peabody College.
She married boyfriend Billy Neal in 1943 and moved to San Francisco, where she did her first modeling work, modeling fur coats for customers at a furrier.
She divorced her husband in 1947, and in 1950, she met a police officer and amateur photographer named Jerry Tibbs, who took photos of Page and assembled her first pinup portfolio. Tibbs eventually introduced her to other photographers, helping to launch her modeling career.
Her photo eventually graced magazines such as Wink, Eyeful and Beauty Parade. She appeared in Playboy in January 1955, further expanding her worldwide popularity. Soon her image was gracing playing cards, record albums and bedroom posters across the country.
She married two more times, but both marriages ended in divorce.
She stopped modeling in 1957 and disappeared from the public eye -- prompting an almost cult-like obsession in some circles in the 1980s and 1990s as people speculated on her whereabouts.
Page was hospitalized earlier this year with a bout of pneumonia earlier this year, but she successfully fought off that illness, Roesler said.

On the subject of the economy, has anyone noticed the connection between gas prices dropping and the investment houses collapsing? I watch agricutlural commodities. When they started to hit the ceiling I was really confused - there was no rational basis for it - then I realized - all the hedge fund people were getting out of the equities markets and going into stuff like wheat. Someobdy should write a book.

Didn't catch the race of the students in question just saw video apology the teacher made about causing one of the students discomfort. It wasn't cause she felt her methods were wrong just unfortuneate someone felt uncomfortable.

Was great tho that she let the prosecutor call him out on the truncation and explain to the Def. Att. that he was Full of Shite.

Tried that. On mine, it works better if I drop out of Firefox and sign back in.
Wasn't it the guys on Mythbusters who got on the software/browser/hardware makers about not being so eager to put every imaginable bell and whistle on their upgrades that it would be impossible for an average person to cope with? I mean, unless they could afford a bleeding-edge computer that's halfway to some cyberpunk wunderdeck like the Fairlight Excalibur?
I'm running a Dell, and the guy who runs the local computer-repair place down the street hates Dells. He also insists on putting Avast and E-Trust on anytime he does a clean and floss- both are just about useless, and interfere with the security programs that actually work, namely MalWareBytes and Spyware Nuker XT- both of which I was tipped off to by members of the Lizard Legion.

We've all had trouble with our animals, but I don't think anyone can top this one:
Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I'm lying.
On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty.
Initially, the new acquisition was no problem.
Then one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen.
'Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again.. Please come reset it.'
'You know where the button is,' I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. 'Reset it yourself!'
'But I'm scared!' she persisted. 'What if it starts going and sucks me in?'
There was a meaningful pause and then, 'C'mon, it'll only take you a second.'
So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behavior as extremely cowardly.
Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing.
It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region.
Wild animals are sometimes faced with a 'fight or flight ' syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the 'flight' option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent.
The impact knocked me out cold.
When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me.
Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of 'been-there, done-that' paramedics.
Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter...and not succeeding.
Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was.
'What's the matter?' They all asked, 'Cat got your tongue?'
If they only knew!
Why is it that only the women laugh at this?

The Real Bill Ayers By WILLIAM AYERS
IN the recently concluded presidential race, I was unwillingly thrust upon the stage and asked to play a role in a profoundly dishonest drama. I refused, and here’s why.
Unable to challenge the content of Barack Obama’s campaign, his opponents invented a narrative about a young politician who emerged from nowhere, a man of charm, intelligence and skill, but with an exotic background and a strange name. The refrain was a question: “What do we really know about this man?”
Secondary characters in the narrative included an African-American preacher with a fiery style, a Palestinian scholar and an “unrepentant domestic terrorist.” Linking the candidate with these supposedly shadowy characters, and ferreting out every imagined secret tie and dark affiliation, became big news.
I was cast in the “unrepentant terrorist” role; I felt at times like the enemy projected onto a large screen in the “Two Minutes Hate” scene from George Orwell’s “1984,” when the faithful gathered in a frenzy of fear and loathing.
I never killed or injured anyone. I did join the civil rights movement in the mid-1960s, and later resisted the draft and was arrested in nonviolent demonstrations. I became a full-time antiwar organizer for Students for a Democratic Society. In 1970, I co-founded the Weather Underground, an organization that was created after an accidental explosion that claimed the lives of three of our comrades in Greenwich Village. The Weather Underground went on to take responsibility for placing several small bombs in empty offices — the ones at the Pentagon and the United States Capitol were the most notorious — as an illegal and unpopular war consumed the nation.
It only took Ayers 4 paragraphs to utter his first lie. The Weather Underground was founded in 1969, before the explosion that killed is co-conspirators. And what was that "accidental explosion"? It was a bomb his fellow terrorists were assembling which detonated prematurely, before they could place it at the Fort Dix dance and kill hundreds of innocent young men. Who taught the Weather Underground how to make bombs? Bill Ayres. He boasted about his bomb making expertise.
The real "Real Bill Ayres" still is an unrepentant terrorist, a liar and was at least party responsible for the deaths of his bomb making friends.

Hey Kenneth - I wrote a comment about that piece in the NYT from Ayers and was just looking for it to copy and paste but couldn't find it.
Bottom line (and this is all verifiable through Wiki) is that the Weather Underground did split off from the SDS because the WU didn't think the SDS was radical enough. And while Ayers didn't kill or hurt anyone that we know of, his every so charming wife
Bernadine Dohrn sent off a bomb which killed a cop and blinded another for life and Billy Boy and Bernadine were kind enough to raise the child of Kathy Boudin - who was convicted of felony murder of an armed guard and a cop in a Brinks armored car holdup in 1982. NOT to mention the fact that it was Billy Ayers who wrote the "Declaration of War" against the United States of America in 1969.
This guy is an unrepentant POS.

Good morning from a 33 degree and snowy mid-Illinois.
Several economic points to ponder that you will never hear from the MSM.
1. Two years ago the economy was clicking along pretty good. Yes there were issues building but there was still strong growth adn time to fix the growing concerns. Then the Democrats took control of Congress and all the committees. Two years later we are in a deep recession and the Democrats prescription for it is more government spending, more government control, more government hand outs.
2. Mr. "Spread the Wealth" Obama gets elected President and 533,000 jobs get cut, and the Dem's are still in control of Congress.
Soon Obama will kick off his campaign to take over the health industry, which is 17% of the economy.

You just have to copy and save that story to post again when more people are around.
One night when I was sleeping, I felt a pull on the top of my ear. No pain, just a pull. I slowly discovered that my cat was on my pillow between my head and the backboard of the bed. She had evidently stretched her legs under my head, released her claws, and when she pulled back her leg her claw got caught on on my ear. She couldn't release and kept pulling. There was no room for me to move my head toward her to help out. I had to try to pull her leg forward with my hand and pray she didn't freak out with all claws slashing at my head and face.
I finally got her lose. The claw had made a complete puncture all the way through the top of my ear. Her claws are so sharp there was no pain at all. I put some peroxide on the puncture and all was fine.
I regret not putting an earing in right away.

"I know she's interested," Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday. "She spent a lot of her life balancing public service with obligations to her family. Now her children are grown, and she is ready to move onto a bigger stage."
Once Clinton is confirmed to President-elect Barack Obama's cabinet, New York Gov. David Paterson will appoint someone to fill the seat for two years.
The Kennedy family's connections and history cannot force Paterson to choose Caroline, who is the daughter of President John F. Kennedy. But the family's strong support could increase pressure on Paterson to choose her above lesser-known contenders.
Seeking the Senate seat would also be a significant departure from the life that she has lived until now, zealously guarding her family's privacy — and her own.
Robert Kennedy said the family would come out en masse for her if she does get the appointment and has to run for election in 2010.
"If she runs, you will see more Kennedys than you have ever seen in your life," he said.
An environmental lawyer who took himself out of consideration for the Senate seat earlier this week, Robert Kennedy said he has spoken to his cousin about the position and is one of "many, many people" urging her to seek it.
He also offered a policy rationale for her in the role: education.
"She's probably one of the leading advocates in the nation on public education. She feels a lot of the issues she's worked on are in danger of being shunted aside because of the economic crisis," he said.
SNIP
Riiight. I'm sure her kids went to public schools.
Why do I get the feeling that a Kennedy just expects to get what she/he wants?

Huh, don't know if this has been posted yet or not, and probably only means anything to older lizards, but:
Pinup Bettie Page hospitalized after heart attack
LOS ANGELES - Bettie Page, a 1950s pinup known for her raven-haired bangs and saucy come-hither looks, was hospitalized in intensive care after suffering a heart attack, her agent said Friday.
"She's critically ill," Mark Roesler of CMG Worldwide told The Associated Press.
He said the 85-year-old had been hospitalized for the last three weeks with pneumonia and was about to be released when she had the heart attack Tuesday. Page was transferred to another hospital in Los Angeles and remained in intensive care Friday.
A family friend, Todd Mueller, said Page was in a coma. When asked to confirm, Roesler said, "I would not deny that," but he would not comment further on her condition.
Page, a secretary turned model, is credited with helping set the stage for the sexual revolution of the rebellious 1960s. She attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure that were tacked up on walls across the country.
Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses.

Oh brother - looks like Mayor Bloomberg's way of governing has made it's way across the Atlantic:
Amsterdam to close many brothels, marijuana cafes
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Amsterdam unveiled plans Saturday to close brothels, sex shops and marijuana cafes in its ancient city center as part of a major effort to drive organized crime out of the tourist haven.
The city is targeting businesses that "generate criminality," including gambling parlors, and the so-called "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly. Also targeted are peep shows, massage parlors and souvenir shops used by drug dealers for money-laundering.
"I think that the new reality will be more in line with our image as a tolerant and crazy place, rather than a free zone for criminals" said Lodewijk Asscher, a city council member and one of the main proponents of the plan.
The news comes just one day after Amsterdam's mayor said he would search for loopholes in new rules laid down by the national government that would close marijuana cafes near schools citywide. The measures announced Saturday would affect about 36 coffee shops in the center itself - a little less than 20 percent of the city total.

GWB has been a big disappointment on the domestic side.
What I find most interesting, with all these hand outs, bail outs, shout outs and get the fuck outs, that it doesn't seem to be doing anything that they "experts" and the politicians are saying it should do.
Daily now, we are seeing articles and news reports about layoffs, downsizing, cutting this and cutting that. Diller, the ex-Hollywood big chief, even trashed American business for cutting staff even though they didn't even have to, just to take advantage of picking up a few extra bucks during this "crisis."
All I see is (as TFK would call them) the Evil Money Cult taking total advantage of us and the government. People are going to loose jobs, retirement plans, plans they have been making for all their life, while the Evil Money Cult fattens their bankroll and softens their fat asses even more than they are now.
This is really criminal. And you know, there doesn't seem to be much outcry about it. That is the tragedy at the bottom of this whole thing. We don't seem to care enough to do anything about it.
Do you know why? Because that's exactly what they have been grooming us for for years, to be the placid, quiet little sheep, while they rape us, body and soul.

She came from a fairly wealthy family - her Dad was very successful. I think that she BECAME more Kennedy than not when she married Robert. Ethel and her sister-in-laws didn't like Jackie, for instance. Jackie didn't quite fit in with their strident, rough and tumble, highly competitive ways. More Kennedy than thou, dontcha know?
