'Architect' of 9/11 to go on trial

On Monday morning, a heavily built man will be led from a concrete cell, whose slit window overlooks the Caribbean, by soldiers whose name tags have been removed from their uniforms and replaced with a Velcro strip reading: "I don't know."

He will be taken to a high security courtroom to sit beside four co-defendants and a glass wall - all that will separate him from 10 families who lost loved ones in the terrorist atrocities which he is accused of masterminding.

This moment will mark the onset of five days of trial hearings against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-styled architect of the September 11th attacks and once the number three in al-Qaeda's hierarchy. The guards at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, the scene of the military tribunal, will be anonymous to prevent reprisal attacks on their families.

This moment will be filled with meaning for President George W Bush's Administration, which will have just 43 days left in power; for Barack Obama, who has vowed to close the camp, and for Alice Hoagland, who will sit behind the screen looking at the man responsible for the death of her son, Mark Bingham. He died on United Flight 93, which plunged into the Pennsylvania countryside as its passengers tried to take back the hijacked aircraft.

/let's get him hanged before Obama can pardon him

It could be that they're trying to show the hypocrisy of someone stealing something in order to protect Christmas.

When I heard about the sign, I thought the atheist group should've put a Bible quote, actually. Quoting Jeremah 10:1-4 right next to a Christmas tree could've at least made people think more than the sign they put up.

All American Whigs thought alike on these subjects. When forced, therefore, to resort to arms for redress, an appeal to the tribunal of the world was deemed proper for our justification. This was the object of the Declaration of Independence. Not to find out new principles, or new arguments, never before thought of, not merely to say things which had never been said before; but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject, in terms so plain and firm as to command their assent, and to justify ourselves in the independent stand we are compelled to take. Neither aiming at originality of principle or sentiment, nor yet copied from any particular and previous writing, it was intended to be an expression of the American mind, and to give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion. All its authority rests then on the harmonizing sentiments of the day, whether expressed in conversation, in letters, printed essays, or in the elementary books of public right, as Aristotle, Cicero, Locke, Sidney, &c. ..."

Oregon is not correct.

Did you watch the video?

In the predawn darkness of September 9, 1942, the Japanese submarine I-25 surfaced off the southern coast of Oregon near Cape Blanco. The Japanese crew quickly assembled a small modified Zero (Glen) floatplane and launched pilot Nobuo Fujita and his observer Shoji Okuda into the foggy skies above.

The Japanese mission was to "strike terror into the hearts of the American people" by starting devastating forest fires and diverting much-needed resources from fighting the war. The bombings could also force the United States Navy to retreat from the Pacific to protect the West Coast.

Fujita flew his plane to the southeast and dropped two 170 lb. thermite incendiary bombs on Wheeler ridge near Mt. Emily (19-miles east of Brookings). This was the first aerial bombing raid of the United States mainland by a foreign power. Fires were started by the resulting explosions but were quickly extinguished by forest service personnel.

/Oregon seem to have turned the bombing site into a tourist attraction

GMSC nailed it then-it is probably the Hard Drive with a bad bearing. If you can get it in to replace it before it siezes up, the tech can probably salvage your data to a new hard drive. A noise at the rear would have been the Power Supply fan.

Dell has some good sales on right now, between 3 and 6 hundred, with shipping possibly free. Check at [Link: www.dell.com...] But buying a Hard drive, could be done for 30 to 60 bucks, if you shop around. Bearings are tricky; they can run noisy for a long time, or seize up tomorrow.

Erik,

Yeah. I know. Or I should know better.

A couple of years ago I had the hard drive go on both my daughter's PC and my mac at the same time. The mac was fixed, 95% recovered, and back in service in 2 days. The data from the PC was mostly lost, and it was twice a$ much a$ it cost me to fix the mac to find that out!

Definitely make sure you back up everything important from the drive, like immediately. If it crashes/fails/seizes, there's no guarantee you'll get anything off of it.

Moving from the 1940's (earlier, we were talking about the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7th, 1941, and WWII) to the 1950's, we may be about to lose popular 50's pinup Bettie Page:

Bettie Page is ailing

1950's poster girl and avatar for modern Goth beauty, Bettie Page, the alt pinup who was famous for her pale complexion, curvaceous and leggy frame and unique raven hairstyle is reportedly ailing after a heart attack, her agent to the AP on Friday.

"She's critically ill," Mark Roesler of CMG Worldwide told The Associated Press.
Ms. Page, 85, was admitted to hospital and there for the last three weeks with pneumonia and was about to be released when she had the heart attack Tuesday.

The AP reports Ms. Page was transferred to another hospital's ICU in Los Angeles, where she remains.

Reportedly a "family friend," Todd Mueller, told the AP that Page was in a coma. Her manager confirmed this and said nothing further.

Bettie Page was born April 22, 1923 in Nashville, Tennessee. She appeared taller in photos than her actual 5' 51/2" height, and has naturally black hair. During her modeling heyday, the non-smoking photogenic muse possessed measurements: 36 - 24 - 35, and during her life was a teacher and secretary.
In October of 1950, Bettie met Jerry Tibbs, a policeman and photography hobbyist, on a beach at Coney Island according to the memoir, Bettie Page: Queen of Hearts by Jim Silke. Tibbs offered to take pictures for her portfolio at his studio, and Bettie's career blossomed from the exposure.

Page then appeared in magazines such as Eyeful and Titter for publisher Robert Harrison. She also modeled in New York for Irving Klaw's Movie Star News outfit where she also did bondage/fetish photos, becoming his most popular model and also would go to Florida to pose for Bunny Yeager, a famous pin-up photographer, leading to many of her iconic surf and beach shots.
Ms. Page spent decades away from the public eye, and during that time battled with mental illness and became a born-again Christian.

Not at all.

PCmover is the only migration utility that moves programs, files, and settings from your old PC to your new PC. Simply install PCmover on both your old and new computers and go! PCmover will determine which programs, files, and settings need to be moved, and when the transfer is complete, your new computer will have the personality and functionality of your old PC plus all of its own pre-installed software. Works with almost any Windows operating system, from Windows 95 to Vista.

But as I said, the ancient system has no USB port-I'd have to try to find a compatible USB port card to do the transfer. Laptop is more modern, has both USB and Aethernet connector. Back in the old days one had to hook up a serial interface connector (between both PC's)to copy from 1 to the other. And, my current machine doesn't have the old serial and parallel connectors. Like you, I usually lose out on collector's items. When I was a kid,I had a comic book collection that filled a cardboard box behind the B/W console TV (13 channels). It was the box the TV came in. It had Superman 1, 3, 4, 5-then Gaps thru the mid 1960's. Likewise with all Justice League comics, and individual League member books. When I went in the military, my sisters took the covers off and sold them 2 for a dime at the corner Drug Store. Just chiming in with a drive by, but I sent over a suggestion to Charles about Engadget.com's comment system.

If someone get's a downding their font/text gets lighter... so not only is it a 'negative' comment, but it actually begins to fade and become trasnparent the more downdings one gets.

I think that is way cool. Would add a new dimension to negative posts and help put a post into 'deletion' without actually deleting it for those comment that are garbage, but not necessarily 'delete' worthy.

For the updings, the background gets darker and darker so that the more noteworthy a comment the more it 'stands out'...

IMHO. Feel free to report this (positively) if you think it would make a solid addition to LGF.

Later all.

That, or check with tech support at the Manufacturers' website. It is dependent on the software, and the Motherboard. Open slots doesn't neccessarily mean you can add memory; also you need to know what TYPE of memory. I couldn't tell you how many types there are now, and some companies only allow there own products to install. IBM was that way, with microchannel boards-don't know if that's still true.

Look for your computer brand/manufacturer specifically and an online search will tell you what type of RAM you can upgrade with. I was able to do that for my mom's and dad's computer and went to CompUSA and purchased extra sticks of RAM for them.

Yes, thank goodness! I am very sorry about the accident--I had a snow skid yesterday that mashed the front of my car when I hit a guard rail. I'm going to pay this out of my own pocket (I don't want the insurance rate to go up or to be canceled), but I'm thankful that 1) I wasn't hurt 2) no one else was involved 3) I could drive home.

Some lessons are more expensive than others. I should have been driving even slower than I was (and I was driving under the speed limit).

re: #325 Dr. Shalit

Sounds right. My current Dell has Vista and 3GB RAM, but I could've gone for 4 gigs. Tho, when increasing Memory size, it often requires a different type of configuration-and all slots may not be usable. when I upgraded my ancient PC, I took out 4 memory boards, but was only allowed to install 2, and they had to be in slots 1 and 2. That's why I recommend the manufacturers' tech support. Time and money lost are bad; adding in frustration makes it worse.

re: #335 Pietr, et al.

Here's a fairly basic explanation of how 32-bit XP sets up installed RAM:

4 GB RAM in 32-bit Windows XP and Vista

When I built my desktop PC, I put in 2 GB (2 x 1 G.) A year later I added 1 GB (2 x 512 MB) and called it done.

When I bought my laptop, I bought it with 1 GB instead of 2 or 4, saving hundreds given the mfg's price scaling, and ordered a 4 GB upgrade kit from Kingston (or maybe Crucial?) for less than half the price. My laptop saw a bit under 3 GB running Vista, and now sees a bit over 3 GB since I dumped Vista and took the mfg's free XP "downgrade" offer.

I gave the laptop's original 2 x 512 MB to a friend with a discount XP laptop that he'd bought with just 256 MB.

Brian Kennedy writes about the danger of an EMP attack:

"But as terrible as that scenario sounds, there is one that is worse. Let us say the freighter ship launches a nuclear-armed Shahab-3 missile off the coast of the U.S. and the missile explodes 300 miles over Chicago. The nuclear detonation in space creates an electromagnetic pulse (EMP)."

"Gamma rays from the explosion, through the Compton Effect, generate three classes of disruptive electromagnetic pulses, which permanently destroy consumer electronics, the electronics in some automobiles and, most importantly, the hundreds of large transformers that distribute power throughout the U.S. All of our lights, refrigerators, water-pumping stations, TVs and radios stop running. We have no communication and no ability to provide food and water to 300 million Americans."

"This is what is referred to as an EMP attack, and such an attack would effectively throw America back technologically into the early 19th century. It would require the Iranians to be able to produce a warhead as sophisticated as we expect the Russians or the Chinese to possess. But that is certainly attainable. Common sense would suggest that, absent food and water, the number of people who could die of deprivation and as a result of social breakdown might run well into the millions."

Iran is conducting tests.

If Obama wants more spending to stimulate the economy, missile defense should be a priority.
