Well, what's the big deal? It's not like he's got to pay for his health care costs now does it? /

Seriously though, he really ought to quit the cancer sticks. They're not good for him and can shorten his life expectancy, increase the medical costs that we taxpayers will be shouldering when he is old and grey.

You know, all the reasons that government health care could find to reject his medical claims should universal health care come to fruition.

Probably not a lie as much as wishful thinking. There are tons of smokers, alcoholics, etc., that decide they've quit, tell everyone they're done, and then go back to it eventually. It's the nature of addiction.

Oh, and I'd like to jump on the "why is this news?" bandwagon.

Have you stopped smoking?

PRES.-ELECT OBAMA: You know, I have, but what I said was that, you know, there are times where I've fallen off the wagon. Well...

MR. BROKAW: Well, wait a minute.

PRES.-ELECT OBAMA: ...what can I tell...

MR. BROKAW: Then that means you haven't stopped.

PRES.-ELECT OBAMA: Well, the--fair enough. What I would say is, is that I have done a terrific job under the circumstances of making myself much healthier, and I think that you will not see any violations of these rules in the White House.

re: #65 buzzsawmonkey

i'd love to see everyone quit tobacco, and then watch the tax chaos that happens.

what needs to happen is this: everyone needs to smoke heavily, and all the cigs are taxed. and then everyone dies just...right...before...retirement, just before the govt (the living workers) have to start paying for the old/retired. /s

or we can pretend that cigs are bad and kill alot of people, but not outlaw them AND tax them at just the high enough rate to keep enough people smoking taxed cigs to keep the tax money coming in while the govt pretends to want everyone not to smoke. if they are that dangerous, outlaw them. more people are killed by cigs than by guns.

BTW, my young nephew is being taught in school that smoking is equivalent to crack. He replied that if it kept the kid off cigarettes, no problem. I suggested that it was more likely that once the kid found that the two were not equivalent--which he is likely to do once he makes it to college--that he will toss out all the other warnings he was given.

BTW, my young nephew is being taught in school that smoking is equivalent to crack. I mentioned this to his father, and suggested that this was a wee mite of overkill--worse, in its way, than being taught (as I was in "health class") that a couple of puffs of pot guaranteed that you would end up a heroin addict.

He replied that if it kept the kid off cigarettes, no problem. I suggested that it was more likely that once the kid found that the two were not equivalent--which he is likely to do once he makes it to college--that he will toss out all the other warnings he was given.

Also reminds me of many Christians who preach that just thinking about something is the same as doing it...so why the hell wouldn't you do the sin if it's really no worse than just thinking about it?

Hmm, smoking. I admit, guilty as charged. Buzz captures my gripes about it in his posts above very well. I think it's also a generational thing. Most of the WW2 vets I've known were unapologetic smokers.I never smoked until I went in the Army and got overseas in '67. That smoking was bad for health was a very minor concern then, there were other, more immediate threats to health. Most of you that were in the service then will remember the C-rations that had a little 5-pack of cigs in them.Usually non-filtered Camels, Lucky Strikes,Pall Malls maybe occasionally Winstons or Marlboros. The military of that time almost encouraged smoking, "Smoke if you've got 'em", butt-cans in the barracks, etc.

There was also a thing called "Supplemental Pack" or "Sundries Pack", SP Pack for short, occasionally issued in the field, one per platoon. It contained 10 cartons of cigs, writing paper, toiletries, chewing tobacco, and a few boxes of that ghastly VN War version of Hershey's Tropical Chocolate, virtually unchanged from the WW2 Ration D version. Nobody wanted the unfiltered Lucky Strikes, there was one carton in these SP Packs, they were angling for the Marlboros or the Kools, so I took up Luckys.

Bless the modern military, they dont encourage smoking. I went into the Guard in the late '80s - early '90s, and it was kind of funny seeing all us old retreads sneaking outside to have a smoke, smoking didn't seem to be a major vice among the young troops. Anyway, I've sympathy for anyone trying to quit .

236 Lynn B.  Sun, Dec 7, 2008 8:07:03pm

Who cares if the POTUS smokes?

I do.

I care if the President is an addict. That he's addicted to a legal substance is nice, but if he's sneaking and lying about it then he clearly is an addict. Do I care if he enjoys a cigar or a cigarette once in a while? No. Not exactly a great role model for kids, but the President isn't expected to be a saint.

In the same vein, I have no problem if he enjoys a cocktail or a glass or two of wine with dinner but I would have a problem if the President was a drinking alcoholic. I would have a problem if he was addicted to prescription drugs. (I'm leaving illegal substances out of this discussion because ... they're illegal.)

Huh, I still have my doubts, but maybe he is human after all. This actually doesn't really bother me and good luck to him in hopefully kicking the habit for real. I know very few people that give it up forever, but my grandfather (WWII POW) was one of them. He figured he survived that so he wasn't going to let cigs be the thing that did him in. Turns out losing his wife of 62 years is what finally killed him.

Nicotine addiction appears to be a subjective thing. Many people find it nearly impossible to quit smoking. Many others don't but you don't hear much about them. There is strong evidence that the addiction is much more behavioral than physical. People I know who have gone through programs based on behavioral therapy have had an extremely high rate of success quitting, usually after several unsuccessful attempts with more "traditional" programs.

I didn't need a program at all. I've been allergic to cigarette smoke as long as I can remember. I always smoked the weakest cigarettes I could find and I quit when I got tired of feeling nauseous and dizzy but most of all I couldn't stand the smell any more. Why did I smoke in the first place? Try kissing someone who smokes if you don't. Without throwing up.

If smokers had the remotest clue how badly their breath and their hair and their clothes reek, most would probably quit out of sheer fright. Every time I look at P-E Obama, I can't help but think about that.

As I said, the experience tends to be subjective. No one can tell you that you didn't experience what you experienced. But the bio-chemical and physiological analysis that has been explained to me (by people who understand it ... I don't) shows that the nicotine is basically out of your system in about 48 hours. That should mean a dramatic decrease in physical symptoms but YMMV. The power of mind over matter is not to be underestimated.

This is one of the few times that I'm going to give BHO a full-out pass on an issue. I really do not feel that this is something that is going to cause major problems for the nation or anything like that. Also, smokers have been known to be very socially open with each other and there are a lot of chain smokers in Eastern Europe and Asia. So maybe BHO's smoking will actually be good for America diplomatically!

re: #266 Lynn B.

I smoked for 9 years...age 16-25, about a 2 pack a day habit. The Surgeon General's report came out when my oldest was about a month or so old, almost 45 years ago. As an RN, I already knew better, but needed prodding. I smoked through my pregnancy...after he finished feeding, I put him in for a nap, took 4 cartons of cigarettes that my husband, who was in the Army at the time, bought in the PX for dirt..and sat on the floor in the loo, opened the cartons, tore each and every cigarette into pieces, flushed a lot (probably did something to the Reservoir for Brookline, MA, as we lived right near it;), and never smoked again. It was far easier back then, as cigarettes were not as doped as they are now.

But for about 5 years I would inhale smoke from other people's cigarettes! Now? It makes me sick to my stomach.

My only daughter was the only one of our 4 kids who smoked..ironic, as she got my husband to finally quit after a few tries about 12-14 years after I quit. She had to go through a program...twice, but now has not smoked in about 20 years or so.

I have heard from people who try now, and they really have a wicked time.

I still feel guilty that I smoked through my first pregnancy, and about a month after my son was born.

277 Lynn B.  Sun, Dec 7, 2008 9:31:37pm

re: #276 NY Nana

Nana, sounds to me like you were way ahead of most people, probably due to your RN training. I have a friend who smoked through her first pregnancy ... in the mid-80s! Her son has asthma but is otherwise ok.

You make a good point, I think, about cigarettes being more doped up and people having a tougher time quitting now than a few decades ago.

As a student nurse, at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital? We had department heads lecture, from all the fields of medicine, and they, even back in the late 1950's to early '60's, were letting us know just how bad it was, but nursing is a stressful profession at times, and even the MD's smoked.

My oldest will be 45 this month, and knows that I smoked during the pregnancy and first month of his life.

I had forgotten the youngest...I found out after he finished his Masters that when he was in Greenland, on a scientific expedition,on the Greenland Ice sheet (GISP) as a junior undergrad, someone dared him to smoke a cigar..he took the dare, and said that he was permanently cured of any idea of smoking...

To this day, I cannot picture what his face must have looked for. My daughter started smoking cigarettes at about 13-14, and I smelled it when she came home from baby sitting.

Yes, they dope cigarettes with abandon...and even with a pack of cigarettes now costing more than a carton did when we smoked? I honestly feel for anyone who smokes, and is trying to beat the habit.

I cannot find any sympathy for Hussein, try as I may.

It is good to see that so many places now are 100% no smoking.

The temp is 18 F here right now, and someone who lives on the floor above us is on the balcony smoking, as his wife will not allow it in the apartment. Standing in this cold to smoke? It truly is an addiction, but it can be cured, and I can attest to just how good it felt when I knew that I had beaten it...but that was eons ago.

279 Catttt  Sun, Dec 7, 2008 9:48:16pm

OK, I figured he was still smoking - you can't quit just because other people want you to. You have to want to yourself.

So maybe he tried - fell off the wagon - bounced a lot (she says as she lights up a Camel).

My ex said smoking is harder to quit than heroin (he is a recovering addict who still smokes).

re: #265 FlagPony

Honestly, I believe BHO has an addictive personality.
With his history of cocaine use and cigarettes. The people that get addicted with and addictive personality are the ones who struggle the most...just my 2cents

Yes, I have read studies that indicate most drug addicts are also cigarette addicts. The two go hand-in-hand.

281 Nightwatch  Sun, Dec 7, 2008 10:10:54pm

Well SNAP,

I must be a poster child for the "O" then.

So if he manages to kick them after New Year's you're going to call him a truth-teller?

I just think there are much more significant lies for Zero to be caught in.

/AHA! RECIDIVIST!

284 Rmunoz  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 12:10:00am

Oh good. The only times I ever looked at Obama and thought he was okay were the times I saw him with a smoke in his hand or dragging on one. Smokers are relatively more serious than people who don't and, anyway, having a cigarette in your hand makes for more striking visuals.

I don't care what people say, good on him. Light one up for freedom, brother!

I recommend Natural American Spirit. All natural, if a little pricier. Camels are also okay if you want to save a few cents. But compare the Spirits to anything else and there's much more tobacco without any of the gunk the other guys put in theirs. It really is better quality.

Just make sure to smoke in moderation and outside as not to soil the air inside. I would also recommend sucking on a lemondrop or any other lemon flavored candy prior to lighting up. It adds an extra somethin somethin that I think is quite nice.

285 Silvergirl  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 12:31:05am

It makes me thing of Lloyd Bridges in Airplane. His character was under all that stress and he said, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking."
Yeah, Obama is going grayer by the day, and his eye is twitching, so I think he may have to find what solace he can in a cigarette. I think all the briefings he's getting may be opening his eyes to the nature of the beast we're up against as a nation.

re: #9 Son of the Black Dog

Why am I not surprised?

The list of what BHO has NOT lied about would be shorter.

That was my thought, the man has lied about everything and anything.

re: #10 buzzsawmonkey

Sorry, partially wrong. That thing named zapatero who is the actual p.m. of Spain is a smoker too and raised anti-smoking policies to hysterical levels. Hussein Obama is copying his lying technique word per word. Don't miss the canary in the coal mine.

288 Cutty Sark  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 3:41:49am

FDR smoked , many members of Congress and the Senate are morbidly obese , and most drink that rotgut on a daily basis ...the word poltician and liar take on the same meaning .

The highest crime demographic among any group of 535 people is ...you guessed it politicians .

And thery all get free health care for life ... and the besrt available .

Hmmm

289 Cutty Sark  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 3:45:01am

o when will the impeachment hearings begin ? ...for smoking .

290 Bullskin  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 3:45:21am

BTW, for smoking lizards; Elontril-Bupropion is a really good way to quit.

291 NYCHardhat  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 3:46:38am

292 FrogMarch  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 5:10:29am

are you saying that most of our congress are weak bumbling self-indulgent hypocritical elite pampered sheltered obese criminals?
I concur.

294 Victory Gin For All  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 5:34:38am

My stepdad, a lifelong 3 pack-a-day smoker, currently sits in his Lazy-boy for 18 hours a day complete with blanket over the legs and oxygen tubes in his nose, awaiting his death from emphysema and lung cancer.

He did make it to 70 years old, though.

He was not a bad person for smoking cigarettes, just stupid.

The image of Dear Leader hanging out at the entrance of the White House like a leper stinking up all the non-smokers who have to walk past the noxious stink cloud is pretty pathetic.

295 nomenna  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 5:44:51am

Does anybody really care about this besides the looney left cigarette nazis who will undoubtledly see this as a personal betrayal. And for god's sake, why did Brokaw even bring this up? Sheesh...

296 kenufive  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 6:26:49am

I have never smoked, but have read that for some quiting tobacco is as tough as quitting heroin!n

297 Hanoch  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 6:42:31am

re: #295 nomenna

My sentiments exactly. Absolutely irrelevant. The fact that the MSM focuses on this nonsense, despite all the other significant problems in the world, is a further example of the lack of professionalism and quality of today's journalists.

298 Yashmak  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 7:32:43am

Holy crap. Obama and I have something in common. I've (thus far) failed to quit smoking too.

I have to say, I think that having just won the Presidency would probably not be the easiest time to quit smoking.

299 Kaymad  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 7:36:44am

Not very relevant I agree, but as a smoker myself I find it interesting. Having just moved from Texas to Indiana I find my smoking is down to about 5 a day. Am I on an amazing new drug to help me quit you might ask? Nope, it's pretty damn cold here and I don't smoke in my house or in my car. Can't even smoke in a bar or restaurant around here. When it's 15 degrees outside it takes the enjoyment out of the nicotine buzz.

300 gander  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 8:26:49am

The fact that he smokes is my favorite thing about him. Its so un-PC.

301 VoBan  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 9:42:17am

Nixon had the bowling alley installed. Clinton had the track. Truman had the balcony.
Coming soon to a White House near you: a little shed to go behind, in the Rose Garden. Not physically in the White House, so he could say, "I've never smoked in that building. The White House."

302 Ron Shaw  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 9:47:56am

'Liar, liar pants on fire!'
With a lot of luck, maybe many of the 'believers' will begin to see that their guy will lie even if the truth sounds better. Fortunately, millions of informed voters knew this before the election.

303 timothyj  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 10:15:07am

So, let me see. Obama "gave up" smoking, but not we find out that he lied about it. Is it too great a step of faith to assume that when he "gave up" marijuana and cocaine earlier, he lied about that?

Oh, for Pete's sake. "Earlier" means 30 freaking years ago.

Give me a break.

305 TimothyJ  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 10:25:56am

Why would I give you a break? One of the last two Presidents lived in a haze of "smoke" in the white house. Sorry, but once you reach the pinnacle of power, you can do what you want.

re: #29 drool

He didn't lie about quitting...he just told us he restarted periodically.

I downdinged the thread as a whole because I thought the word "lied" in the headline was over-the-top -- it's proverbial* that would-be ex-smokers with the best intentions frequently backslide, so "Obama seen with cigarettes again" would've been sufficient.

*See Mark Twain's "It's easy to quit smoking -- I've done it a thousand times," for instance.

re: #294 Victory Gin For All

The image of Dear Leader hanging out at the entrance of the White House like a leper stinking up all the non-smokers who have to walk past the noxious stink cloud is pretty pathetic.

For people who still smoke inside their home (and especially parents who still smoke inside around their kids), going outside to smoke each and every time they want a cig would be a significant lifestyle improvement, though not nearly as good as quitting altogether.

309 Zebra  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 12:14:15pm

On this topic, I give the guy a break. I've quite smoking a hundred times...each attempt lasting about 6-8 hours. I've tried every gimmick, program, pill, hypnotism, etc. and I still smoke. I'd hate to be POTUS and try to quit smoking at the same time. Let him smoke...I don't want Obama experiencing a nicotine fit while he's deciding issues of war and peace.

310 picaro  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 12:20:06pm

The PR president. What else has he lied about? Public pronouncements versus private actions. One's character is determined by one's private behavior.

re: #12 solomonpanting

Nah. He smokes Kool's.

Heh. I'm fairly certain that Newports are actually the #1-selling menthol brand in the U.S., having overtaken the oldest menthol brand, Kools, and also outselling the menthol versions of top brands like Marlboro and Camel.

P.S. TWIAVBP Alert: In U.S. pop culture, "menthol" cigarettes have a longstanding stereotypical association with African-American consumers, despite the fact that people of all colors can be observed smoking menthols. (Ditto for carbonated beverages in non-cola flavors -- especially fruit flavors such as grape, orange, strawberry, blue raspberry, etc.)

P.P.S. "TWIAVBP" = The World Is A Very Big Place.

Mark Twain said , "giving up smoking is easy , Ive done it hundreds of times ".
But hey , now lets question all those politicos on their dieting , 250 lbs , and sneaking donuts when nobody's looking !

Dirty LIARS , how can they be trusted to run our government !

Man ...if they lie about donuts ...THEY'LL LIE ABOUT ANYTHING !

BTW, my young nephew is being taught in school that smoking is equivalent to crack.

When anyone brought up smoking in my suburban high school science class I would mention the "many benefits of smoking" and bring the class to sreeching halt as the kids digested that. One would have to ask, "And what are the many benfits of smoking?"

antidepressant effect
mild euphoriant
increases their ability to focus on tasks and organize their lives
anorexiant --prevent weight gain
calming effect, anxiety reduction
pain killing

don't believe me look in Wikipedia's nicotine entry

it also helps you exercise by getting you outside to the store to get cigarettes when you are out in weather you would not normally go out in, like a blinding snowstorm

and it looks cool, but why? --may be some evolutionary signaling that

" I have tough genes that can stand smoking, therefore I make a superior mate.?

plus...chesterfields are best for you, doctor approved

of course nicotine does all this without the carcinogenic effect of the other constituents of a cigarette although it is addictive.

Is there a drug that can do all this? No or not one that will be approved in the near future... but exercise will do most if not all of the above.

...class in stunned silence.

re: #316 iceman

Aren't an awful lot of the good "effects" only needed in the first place when your nicotine levels drop off and you start getting anxious, distracted because your body needs the nicotine?

318 kaymad  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 6:17:24am

re: #316 iceman

You just made me wonder about something. My entire family has panic/anxiety disorders. My Mother, sister, brother, cousins both male and female, an aunt, even my own teenage daughter has a variation, my 10 year old is a bundle of anxieties. I don't have any of it. I wonder if smoking has something to do with it? They medicate with anti-anxiety drugs and in one case heavy sedatives. My brother and 1 male cousin self-medicated with alcohol for awhile. As the only smoker in the bunch I guess I medicate with nicotine.
