A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

This is a group therapy session, right? Complete honesty -- right?

OK. I confess.

I never liked Douglas Adams. At all. I found him, and his entire style of humor, utterly unfunny. Straight mouth. Not even a smile. Not once.

I heard this one long before Douglas Adams' books became popular, "Every time you build something foolproof, Nature comes out with a better grade of fool." Sometimes with "idiot" replacing "fool."

Perhaps the quote, as written, is Adams' take on the idea, but the idea itself long predates him. I remember my father expressing it back in the mid '60s. It was one of his favorite sayings, in fact.

And I do like Douglas Adams' books. Never heard him speak, I don't believe.

21 Catttt  Sun, Dec 7, 2008 11:04:56pm

OK, I love Dr. Who and Monty Python, but didn't like Douglas Adams when I tried reading him. I suppose I might give him another go (note the British lingo) - it's been a while.

Conversely, at the movies in London once, there were two Americans - me - and some guy. I know this, because we were the only ones laughing at the purely American jokes.

I've given it 60 seconds of thought, and realized: What I don't like about it is the way the self-congratulatory smugness is built in to each sentence. Not only is he attempting to be funny, but he is simultaneously taking a victory lap for having been successful. I much much prefer the George Carlin/Stephen Wright style of pure deadpan.

He's been my favorite for several years. Well-loved by my family, and by any friends who check him out after I recommend him. When I'm feeling imperious (which isn't really too often, thankfully) I like to say, "Bring me the head of a pig" because of Regan's bit when he's talking about people flying First Class.

So when you do get on, the first class people are already sitting there; they're all sprawled out on their big thrones. "Bring me the head of a pig! And a goblet of something cool and refreshing! Anyone have a fiddle? Amuse me."

Take luck! ;-)

And yes on Peter Sellers. have you ever seen that movie that's a bio on Sellers? Geoffrey Rush played Peter Sellers. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. It took me awhile to get over the man behind the character Inspector Clouseau after I watched that film on his life. It put a damper on his comedy for me, but I think I've moved on. :-)

OK. I confess.

I never liked Douglas Adams. At all. I found him, and his entire style of humor, utterly unfunny. Straight mouth. Not even a smile. Not once.

Perhaps you are missing the proper gene to appreciate it. :) He's one of my favorites. I've read everything published by him, and the Hitchhikers series multiple times.

I much much prefer the George Carlin/Stephen Wright style of pure deadpan.

Speaking of comedy from guys named "Wright", Øbie's Reverend crawled out from under the bus Sunday to remind us that it was 67 years ago to the day that America killed thousands of innocent civilians by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Really?

That's funny, I thought something altogether different happened between the Japanese and us on this date.

My feelings exactly. Douglas Adams and his ilk are so naff. Since the thread has progessed further into British humour... Peter Cook - seriously the funniest man to ever draw breath, Monty Python - for classics such as Dead Parrot and Spanish Inquisition, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous - wicked, Dylan Moran in Black Books - Irish comic genius.

Aaaaah ... Taxi. There's a good ensemble show like you rarely see today.

I'm a big fan of Numb3rs, and I remember watching an episode where, at the end, the two Eppes boys go out on their dates, leaving the dad, played by Judd Hirsch, alone at home. He turns on the TV and, while you can't see it, you hear the Taxi theme song playing!

I guess I'm just a sponge for useless trivia. For example, Marilu Henner lost her virginity on July 20, 1969 - the same night Neil Armstrong landed on the moon!

I would have loved to have seen him - but I have to say, George Carlin and Robin Williams (who was a huge fan of Jonathan Winters) were the one's that nearly caused my collapse from lack of breathing as I was laughing so hard. I found Steve Martin live to be underwhelming compared to his SNL appearances, Eddie Murphy a poor substitute for Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby the funniest clean comic I've seen.

Abbott and Costello were my favorites.

Last summer, while in Boston on vacation, we went to the Science Museum while waiting on the Duck tour start time. They had an exhibit from Cooperstown on Baseball. One of the multimedia items were Abbott and Costello doing 'Who's on First'......my daughter nearly peed herself she was laughing so hard. I think it was the first time she seen Abbott and Costello. (I have to be careful with the old comics, my wife was perturbed when I introduced my daughter to Three Stooges short films.)

To me, any win this year is just another nail in our coffin that is made up of Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid. Neither one of them will win a big game, I think theya re still trying to figure out what to do with those time-outs they saved from that Super Bowl.

When the BCS was established, I believe the Rose Bowl received a guarantee that the PAC 10 and Big 11 winners would play in the Rose Bowl - the only exception is if one, or both, were in the national championship game.

But I do agree that USC playing any of the top four would be a great game.

Via Watts up with that? Early snowfalls in Europe hit Historic Levels:

www.Skiinfo.com is following still more heavy snowfalls across Europe over the past 48 hours, with much more snow in other parts of Europe and many areas of North America too.

The snowfall has been so great that it has closed roads, brought down power lines and even led to the cancellation of some Swiss rail services this week.

One of the greatest beneficiaries are the Italian Dolomites where 150cm (five feet) has fallen at Cortina in a 48 hour period up to Monday, with snow still falling.

Alessandro Fregni of Skiinfo.com’s Italian office commented, “In three days ski areas have seen almost as much snowfall as for the whole winter last year.”

Five feet of snow in 48 hours - that's something I'd like to experience.

Diary of a snow shoveler

Dear Diary...

December 8 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, Which I think was very cruel.

December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow
blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

cont...

244 Erik The Red  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 2:55:17am

December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh#t fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the bugger is lying.

December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the s.o.b who drives that snow plow I'll drag him through the snow by his ankles and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25 - Merry frigging Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!

December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver and he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.

December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

268 Rancher  Mon, Dec 8, 2008 3:22:42am

On a serious note, in the story, the farmer featured complained about how such a tax would hurt him financially. While that may be true, it should be irrelevant. If there is truly an externality here and it can be effectively measured and properly implemented, then there should be a tax on cows in the amount that is equivalent to the negative harm done per cow. That's all that matters. It all hinges on the extent to which cows cause global warming and the extent to which global warming harms society. I'm not in a position to answer that question, but just because it may harm a farmer doesn't mean it's bad policy.

So wtf is the author gonna say when a cheapo burger costs 3-4 times what it used to because noone can afford to raise beef anymore. American beef gonna be priced like Japanese Kobe beef.

Saudi mufti says credit crunch due to ignoring God's rules

Saudi Arabia's grand cleric on Sunday told Muslims on the hajj pilgrimage that the global financial crisis stems from ignoring God's rules and allowing "riba" or usury, prohibited in Islam.

"Today we watch as this financial crisis enfolds and some companies and banks go bankrupt," grand mufti Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said at the Namera mosque, where prophet Mohammed prayed while making the pilgrimage.

"This is the result of ignoring God's rules. Muslims must abide by God's rules, and build their economies accordingly," Sheikh told the faithful before midday prayers.

So, basically it's the infidels' fault because their not muslims.

I've had a week of Friday the 13ths, but I'm thankful the setbacks weren't more serious (including a car accident on ice in which angels kept me from going through a guard raid head first into a creek). So regardless of the expenses, frustrations, and inconveniences, I am blessed in so many ways, not the least of which are my Lizard friends.

I don't remember for sure, and I know you are teasing me - but it was cheap. Maybe a quarter, including transfers - possibly 50 cents. Phone calls were still a nickel - This was the 70s - things were cheaper there than elsewhere.

_________________________
New Orleans area was last to have the nickel phone call, until the 1980s. One could hardly find a phone BOOTH, but there were plenty of phone STALLS.

Streetcar and buses were seven cents until the early 60s when it went to ten cents [free transfer]. If you knew how to do it right you could almost get back to your originating point with the transfers.

Streetcar and bus fare is over a dollar now and the transfers are extra. Best buy for a native is the monthly pass for unlimited travel. When I lived in the city I didn't need a car. The only problem now is that the transit schedules are so screwed up where in the past the buses and streetcars would follow each other almost five minutes apart!

Not even the Vogons? Come on - what person with libertarian leanings can't see the Vogons as quintessential bureaucrats? The whole idea that a planet can get blown up to make way for a highway, and that a hearing had been announced an held in another star system so - sorry Humans - our hands are tied!

How better for Earthlings to be introduced to alien life? They are just like us.

And the lab mice running the massive experiment called Earth?

Adams also took the sometimes pompous genre of SciFi and altered it in a mind bending way.

Thats socialism for you. Its a continual interpretation that people are the problem for going out and doing things to advance humanity. If only we'd gone and tended the stables. Its first incarnation was during the Industrial Revolution as a 'return to nature' antic. And yes, even at that stage it came with fears about changing the climate and pollution killing the world.

I'm no expert, but I've read that a farm of 3,000 pigs can produce as much waste as a town of 10,000 people.
Apparently a farm of 3,000 sows can produce 65,000 pigs per year.
Really, really, nasty waste problems.
Needless to say, these operations bear no resemblance to the 100 acre family farms that we all knew and loved in the past (up here in Ontario, anyways).

Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.

Isn't that the basic premise of the new The Day The Earth Stood Still movie?

Its a continual reinforcement usually by affluent people who have never worked a day in their life .. or by unemployed ... again who have never worked a day in their life. That all this striving and achieving is bad for mankind and can be solved of course, by ELIMINATING the bad people. You know the ones who work and earn and pay the bills so that you can come up with dickhead theories.

Again and again in history it comes around. Sometimes its peasants, sometimes its a counterstrike against an existing regime .. but its almost always the same. And if a comparison is used against other socialist ideas .. the answer is almost always the same.

THIS TIME ITS DIFFERENT.

That strikes me as a poor example of Christian charity. That money would be better off helping people in need. Especially this time of year.

I'd be willing to bet that org has given and continues too give far more to more traditional charitable causes (food banks, homeless shelters, secret Santas, etc). Like Obama or not, it is a historical event

Fox just ran a brief story about a factory that will not pay its employees back wages due to Bank of America's doing something or other. CBBHO chimed in.

One of the protestors at the factory was sporting a sign that had COREteachers.com on it. I found this:

A group of dedicated teachers, Retirees, PSRPs and other champions of public education. We hope to democratize the Chicago Teacher's Union and turn it into an organization that fights on behalf of its members and the students we teach.

We have seen an 18 percent drop in Chicago Teachers Union membership in recent years and charter schools now control close to 10 percent of the system. What is our union leadership doing?

What is a teachers' union doing at a factory protest?

The Peace and Justice caucus in the American Federation of Teachers held a roundtable discussion on "Fighting Back in the Schools" during the July 2008 AFT Convention in Chicago. Labor Beat edited excerpts from those presentations, including dramatic footage of student protests, in the face of police repression, against the privatization of the public schools in Detroit and St. Louis. The message is clear: public education, a long-fought-for gain of the working class over the last century and a half, is targeted for annihilation by corporate America...

The Greenies latest 'sneak attacks', Re Carbon footprint, is to eliminate CO2 emission...so basically we are supposed to all stop breathing! Their satirical ads, Re 'Clean Coal', have been running heavily here, even tho the USA has the toughest standards for stack emissions in the world. We also developed the best 'stack scrubbers'-they make 'em just down the road from me, here in San Antonio. These scrubbers clean the emissions to mostly oxygen and CO2-and this isn't good enough for greenies. Maybe we should point out to them that the vegetation REQUIRES CO2, to produce oxygen-not really. They know it full well, and count on ignorance to help them push their agenda. Penn and Teller got TONS of greenies to sign petitions against WATER-by describing it, but not saying it was water.

They don't like CBBHO much.

Prepared for The Peace and Justice Caucus of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Chicago, July 13, 2008, and delivered in part during the session sponsored by the Peace and Justice Caucus.

Barack Obama’s Education Platform ADVOCATES: More accountability; Higher standards; More money for NCLB; Merit pay (“teachers…who consistently excel in the classroom”).

Barack Obama's Education Platform ASSERTS: The single most important factor in determining a child’s achievement is. . . “You teachers”. . . NOT parent income (July 13, 2008, address via satellite to AFT Convention).

This agenda should qualify Barack Obama for a seat at the Business Roundtable. This agenda certainly raises a few questions about the AFT:

Why did the attendees give these remarks applause? Why did many people even stand up and while they applauded? Why didn’t AFT hold Obama’s feet to the fire and try to leverage a better position on these issues—instead of, like NEA, issuing a knee-jerk, blanket endorsement?

The unions are in ‘business as usual’ mode with their corporate-politico bedfellows.

Good morning, Lizards.

(Good morning, Sharmuta.)

Why insult nerfherders?

There's a much better and more accurate name for these clowns already- Troofers. After all, there's an astounding amount of overlap between the "Dubya did 9/11" and the "Obama isn't an American" crowd- with the Paulbots being just one example of same.

It's about time we all faced up to a simple fact. There is nothing anyone can do to please this bunch. No matter who gets elected, or what they do or do not do, they will find fault with it. Because, if they are honest, it isn't what this country does they object to- it's the fact that they aren't running it.

I'd almost be tempted to let them try, but I'm not sure the world would survive the experience. To visualize their decision-making processes in crisis situations, read Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

/Find a scapegoat- stone the scapegoat. Wash, rinse, and repeat as necessary.

It's probably cathartic as all get-out for them, but not really very useful in the practical sense.

Troofers live to be outraged... at how stupid they think the rest of us are. In this respect, they remind me of nothing so much as UFO "True Believers", who think that the government knows all about abductions, etc., but won't tell us for its own nefarious reasons. There's an overlap, there, too, most obviously a guy named Jim Marrs, who manages to be a JFK assassination conspiracist/ UFO abduction "advocate"/ 9/11 Truther all at the same time. (For any Lizards who are gamers, Marrs' "worldview" makes GURPS Illuminati look simplistic by comparison.)

And if you tell them they're mistaken, or wrong, surprise! You're now considered part of the conspiracy.

Being a Troofer- of any kind- means never having to admit that you don't know what you're talking about.

/My guess is, we're going to be stuck with a lot more of this for the next four years. As for me, I'm stocking up on popcorn.

BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE - THE INVISIBLE KILLER!
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year.
What are the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide?
Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
Dihydrogen Monoxide Facts
Dihydrogen monoxide:

is also known as hydric acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the Greenhouse Effect.
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Dihydrogen Monoxide Alerts
Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. In the midwest alone DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage.

Dihydrogen Monoxide Uses
Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain junk-foods and other food products.
Stop the horror - Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!
THE HORROR MUST BE STOPPED!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its importance to the economic health of this nation. In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know CAN hurt you and others throughout the world.

I think this is the Handout I used at the time.

The greens have another problem on their hands- melting ice might be good!

Melting ice may slow global warming

Science is cool.

It has been my theory that Antarctic ice sheets breakaway because of natural forces when these ice sheets get very large. They don't break because they are melting, they break because they are so large, and heavy. However once they are broken away they will drift with ocean currents, and if they drift to warmer water they will melt.

It takes a lot of heat to melt ice, so that its self could reduce global warming or at minimum cause local cooling. Like ice in a glass of water.
