I heard this one long before Douglas Adams' books became popular, "Every time you build something foolproof, Nature comes out with a better grade of fool." Sometimes with "idiot" replacing "fool."
Perhaps the quote, as written, is Adams' take on the idea, but the idea itself long predates him. I remember my father expressing it back in the mid '60s. It was one of his favorite sayings, in fact.
And I do like Douglas Adams' books. Never heard him speak, I don't believe.

OK, I love Dr. Who and Monty Python, but didn't like Douglas Adams when I tried reading him. I suppose I might give him another go (note the British lingo) - it's been a while.
Conversely, at the movies in London once, there were two Americans - me - and some guy. I know this, because we were the only ones laughing at the purely American jokes.

I've given it 60 seconds of thought, and realized: What I don't like about it is the way the self-congratulatory smugness is built in to each sentence. Not only is he attempting to be funny, but he is simultaneously taking a victory lap for having been successful. I much much prefer the George Carlin/Stephen Wright style of pure deadpan.

He's been my favorite for several years. Well-loved by my family, and by any friends who check him out after I recommend him. When I'm feeling imperious (which isn't really too often, thankfully) I like to say, "Bring me the head of a pig" because of Regan's bit when he's talking about people flying First Class.
So when you do get on, the first class people are already sitting there; they're all sprawled out on their big thrones. "Bring me the head of a pig! And a goblet of something cool and refreshing! Anyone have a fiddle? Amuse me."
Take luck! ;-)

I found it on youtube a couple of weeks ago. "I saw it in the window and I just had to have it."

I love the one where Laurel and Hardy join the Foreign Legion.
Flying Deuces.
And yes on Peter Sellers. have you ever seen that movie that's a bio on Sellers? Geoffrey Rush played Peter Sellers. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. It took me awhile to get over the man behind the character Inspector Clouseau after I watched that film on his life. It put a damper on his comedy for me, but I think I've moved on. :-)

OK. I confess.
I never liked Douglas Adams. At all. I found him, and his entire style of humor, utterly unfunny. Straight mouth. Not even a smile. Not once.
Perhaps you are missing the proper gene to appreciate it. :) He's one of my favorites. I've read everything published by him, and the Hitchhikers series multiple times.

I much much prefer the George Carlin/Stephen Wright style of pure deadpan.
Speaking of comedy from guys named "Wright", Øbie's Reverend crawled out from under the bus Sunday to remind us that it was 67 years ago to the day that America killed thousands of innocent civilians by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Really?
That's funny, I thought something altogether different happened between the Japanese and us on this date.

My feelings exactly. Douglas Adams and his ilk are so naff. Since the thread has progessed further into British humour... Peter Cook - seriously the funniest man to ever draw breath, Monty Python - for classics such as Dead Parrot and Spanish Inquisition, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous - wicked, Dylan Moran in Black Books - Irish comic genius.

Aaaaah ... Taxi. There's a good ensemble show like you rarely see today.
I'm a big fan of Numb3rs, and I remember watching an episode where, at the end, the two Eppes boys go out on their dates, leaving the dad, played by Judd Hirsch, alone at home. He turns on the TV and, while you can't see it, you hear the Taxi theme song playing!
I guess I'm just a sponge for useless trivia. For example, Marilu Henner lost her virginity on July 20, 1969 - the same night Neil Armstrong landed on the moon!

I would have loved to have seen him - but I have to say, George Carlin and Robin Williams (who was a huge fan of Jonathan Winters) were the one's that nearly caused my collapse from lack of breathing as I was laughing so hard. I found Steve Martin live to be underwhelming compared to his SNL appearances, Eddie Murphy a poor substitute for Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby the funniest clean comic I've seen.

Abbott and Costello were my favorites.
Last summer, while in Boston on vacation, we went to the Science Museum while waiting on the Duck tour start time. They had an exhibit from Cooperstown on Baseball. One of the multimedia items were Abbott and Costello doing 'Who's on First'......my daughter nearly peed herself she was laughing so hard. I think it was the first time she seen Abbott and Costello. (I have to be careful with the old comics, my wife was perturbed when I introduced my daughter to Three Stooges short films.)

I guess I don't follow College Football close enough to understand the following:
Final BCS rankings:
1. Oklahoma
2. Florida
3. Texas
4. AlabamaI would think you would see bowl games with Oklahoma vs Florida and Texas vs Alabama. Those would be a couple of great games. But no, instead they have the following:
Oklahoma vs Florida
Texas vs Ohio State (#10)
Alabama vs Utah (#6)
and USC, with the #1 defense anywhere in the NCAA, nowhere to be seen.

When the BCS was established, I believe the Rose Bowl received a guarantee that the PAC 10 and Big 11 winners would play in the Rose Bowl - the only exception is if one, or both, were in the national championship game.
But I do agree that USC playing any of the top four would be a great game.

Peter Gibbons: It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

Via Watts up with that? Early snowfalls in Europe hit Historic Levels:
www.Skiinfo.com is following still more heavy snowfalls across Europe over the past 48 hours, with much more snow in other parts of Europe and many areas of North America too.
The snowfall has been so great that it has closed roads, brought down power lines and even led to the cancellation of some Swiss rail services this week.
One of the greatest beneficiaries are the Italian Dolomites where 150cm (five feet) has fallen at Cortina in a 48 hour period up to Monday, with snow still falling.
Alessandro Fregni of Skiinfo.com’s Italian office commented, “In three days ski areas have seen almost as much snowfall as for the whole winter last year.”
Five feet of snow in 48 hours - that's something I'd like to experience.

Diary of a snow shoveler
Dear Diary...
December 8 - 6:00 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.
December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, Which I think was very cruel.
December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow
blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh#t fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the bugger is lying.
December 23 - Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.
December 24 - 6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the s.o.b who drives that snow plow I'll drag him through the snow by his ankles and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish
shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.
December 25 - Merry frigging Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wondeful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me 1,400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!
December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver and he is now suing me for a million dollars not only the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.
December 31 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

Zicam is best used at the beginning of a head cold - those first couple of days where you need to be functioning, but you're not. After that it really does shorten the duration. BUT, you need to drink a lot of fluids, especially if you're a smoker, or you'll end up with a longer chest cold.

On a serious note, in the story, the farmer featured complained about how such a tax would hurt him financially. While that may be true, it should be irrelevant. If there is truly an externality here and it can be effectively measured and properly implemented, then there should be a tax on cows in the amount that is equivalent to the negative harm done per cow. That's all that matters. It all hinges on the extent to which cows cause global warming and the extent to which global warming harms society. I'm not in a position to answer that question, but just because it may harm a farmer doesn't mean it's bad policy.
So wtf is the author gonna say when a cheapo burger costs 3-4 times what it used to because noone can afford to raise beef anymore. American beef gonna be priced like Japanese Kobe beef.

Saudi mufti says credit crunch due to ignoring God's rules
Saudi Arabia's grand cleric on Sunday told Muslims on the hajj pilgrimage that the global financial crisis stems from ignoring God's rules and allowing "riba" or usury, prohibited in Islam.
"Today we watch as this financial crisis enfolds and some companies and banks go bankrupt," grand mufti Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said at the Namera mosque, where prophet Mohammed prayed while making the pilgrimage.
"This is the result of ignoring God's rules. Muslims must abide by God's rules, and build their economies accordingly," Sheikh told the faithful before midday prayers.
So, basically it's the infidels' fault because their not muslims.

I don't remember for sure, and I know you are teasing me - but it was cheap. Maybe a quarter, including transfers - possibly 50 cents. Phone calls were still a nickel - This was the 70s - things were cheaper there than elsewhere.
_________________________
New Orleans area was last to have the nickel phone call, until the 1980s. One could hardly find a phone BOOTH, but there were plenty of phone STALLS.
Streetcar and buses were seven cents until the early 60s when it went to ten cents [free transfer]. If you knew how to do it right you could almost get back to your originating point with the transfers.
Streetcar and bus fare is over a dollar now and the transfers are extra. Best buy for a native is the monthly pass for unlimited travel. When I lived in the city I didn't need a car. The only problem now is that the transit schedules are so screwed up where in the past the buses and streetcars would follow each other almost five minutes apart!

How better for Earthlings to be introduced to alien life? They are just like us.

Was about to bring that point up too. In fact I wonder who sponsered this idea in the first place. All this talk about AGW and lowering our carbon footprint seems to resemble a form of ludditism. "Get back to nature", "consume less", "Technology is wrong". Think about that for a bit and see if I am wrong.
I think that it plays in to the notion that humanity is the problem.

I need all the hugs and prayers I can get at the moment! I'm taking the care to a repair shop today for an estimate, and I'm prepared for the worst. I don't want to file an insurance claim--it will hike my rates or get me dropped. No other car was involved. so I'm going to steel myself to deal with this.
I just paid the car off last month, too!

Thats socialism for you. Its a continual interpretation that people are the problem for going out and doing things to advance humanity. If only we'd gone and tended the stables. Its first incarnation was during the Industrial Revolution as a 'return to nature' antic. And yes, even at that stage it came with fears about changing the climate and pollution killing the world.

It's usually the feed lots and slaughter houses you smell.
I'm no expert, but I've read that a farm of 3,000 pigs can produce as much waste as a town of 10,000 people.
Apparently a farm of 3,000 sows can produce 65,000 pigs per year.
Really, really, nasty waste problems.
Needless to say, these operations bear no resemblance to the 100 acre family farms that we all knew and loved in the past (up here in Ontario, anyways).

Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.
Great opening Narration from Idiocracy.

Its a continual reinforcement usually by affluent people who have never worked a day in their life .. or by unemployed ... again who have never worked a day in their life. That all this striving and achieving is bad for mankind and can be solved of course, by ELIMINATING the bad people. You know the ones who work and earn and pay the bills so that you can come up with dickhead theories.
Again and again in history it comes around. Sometimes its peasants, sometimes its a counterstrike against an existing regime .. but its almost always the same. And if a comparison is used against other socialist ideas .. the answer is almost always the same.
THIS TIME ITS DIFFERENT.

One of the protestors at the factory was sporting a sign that had COREteachers.com on it. I found this:
A group of dedicated teachers, Retirees, PSRPs and other champions of public education. We hope to democratize the Chicago Teacher's Union and turn it into an organization that fights on behalf of its members and the students we teach.
We have seen an 18 percent drop in Chicago Teachers Union membership in recent years and charter schools now control close to 10 percent of the system. What is our union leadership doing?

The Peace and Justice caucus in the American Federation of Teachers held a roundtable discussion on "Fighting Back in the Schools" during the July 2008 AFT Convention in Chicago. Labor Beat edited excerpts from those presentations, including dramatic footage of student protests, in the face of police repression, against the privatization of the public schools in Detroit and St. Louis. The message is clear: public education, a long-fought-for gain of the working class over the last century and a half, is targeted for annihilation by corporate America...

Their satirical ads, Re 'Clean Coal', have been running heavily here, even tho the USA has the toughest standards for stack emissions in the world. We also developed the best 'stack scrubbers'-they make 'em just down the road from me, here in San Antonio. These scrubbers clean the emissions to mostly oxygen and CO2-and this isn't good enough for greenies. Maybe we should point out to them that the vegetation REQUIRES CO2, to produce oxygen-not really. They know it full well, and count on ignorance to help them push their agenda. Penn and Teller got TONS of greenies to sign petitions against WATER-by describing it, but not saying it was water.

They don't like CBBHO much.
Prepared for The Peace and Justice Caucus of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Chicago, July 13, 2008, and delivered in part during the session sponsored by the Peace and Justice Caucus.
Barack Obama’s Education Platform ADVOCATES: More accountability; Higher standards; More money for NCLB; Merit pay (“teachers…who consistently excel in the classroom”).
Barack Obama's Education Platform ASSERTS: The single most important factor in determining a child’s achievement is. . . “You teachers”. . . NOT parent income (July 13, 2008, address via satellite to AFT Convention).
This agenda should qualify Barack Obama for a seat at the Business Roundtable. This agenda certainly raises a few questions about the AFT:
Why did the attendees give these remarks applause? Why did many people even stand up and while they applauded? Why didn’t AFT hold Obama’s feet to the fire and try to leverage a better position on these issues—instead of, like NEA, issuing a knee-jerk, blanket endorsement?
The unions are in ‘business as usual’ mode with their corporate-politico bedfellows.

Fox just ran a brief story about a factory that will not pay its employees back wages due to Bank of America's doing something or other.
The Company closed down and B of A will not let them borrow more money (which will probably never be repaid) to meet the payroll.
The owners owe the payroll, they just can't borrow more to pay it.
The laid off workers should just go to court and get their money a they will have a primary claim on the assets.
Why the teachers union is there I have no idea.

How's this name for the birth certificate kooks:
nerfherders
As in, "low-down, stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerfherder".
Good morning, Lizards.
(Good morning, Sharmuta.)
Why insult nerfherders?
There's a much better and more accurate name for these clowns already- Troofers. After all, there's an astounding amount of overlap between the "Dubya did 9/11" and the "Obama isn't an American" crowd- with the Paulbots being just one example of same.
It's about time we all faced up to a simple fact. There is nothing anyone can do to please this bunch. No matter who gets elected, or what they do or do not do, they will find fault with it. Because, if they are honest, it isn't what this country does they object to- it's the fact that they aren't running it.
I'd almost be tempted to let them try, but I'm not sure the world would survive the experience. To visualize their decision-making processes in crisis situations, read Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
/Find a scapegoat- stone the scapegoat. Wash, rinse, and repeat as necessary.
It's probably cathartic as all get-out for them, but not really very useful in the practical sense.
Troofers live to be outraged... at how stupid they think the rest of us are. In this respect, they remind me of nothing so much as UFO "True Believers", who think that the government knows all about abductions, etc., but won't tell us for its own nefarious reasons. There's an overlap, there, too, most obviously a guy named Jim Marrs, who manages to be a JFK assassination conspiracist/ UFO abduction "advocate"/ 9/11 Truther all at the same time. (For any Lizards who are gamers, Marrs' "worldview" makes GURPS Illuminati look simplistic by comparison.)
And if you tell them they're mistaken, or wrong, surprise! You're now considered part of the conspiracy.
Being a Troofer- of any kind- means never having to admit that you don't know what you're talking about.
/My guess is, we're going to be stuck with a lot more of this for the next four years. As for me, I'm stocking up on popcorn.

BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE - THE INVISIBLE KILLER!
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year.
What are the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide?
Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
Dihydrogen Monoxide Facts
Dihydrogen monoxide:
is also known as hydric acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the Greenhouse Effect.
may cause severe burns.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Dihydrogen Monoxide Alerts
Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. In the midwest alone DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage.
Dihydrogen Monoxide Uses
Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain junk-foods and other food products.
Stop the horror - Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!
THE HORROR MUST BE STOPPED!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its importance to the economic health of this nation. In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE!
Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know CAN hurt you and others throughout the world.
I think this is the Handout I used at the time.

The greens have another problem on their hands- melting ice might be good!
Melting ice may slow global warming
Science is cool.
It has been my theory that Antarctic ice sheets breakaway because of natural forces when these ice sheets get very large. They don't break because they are melting, they break because they are so large, and heavy. However once they are broken away they will drift with ocean currents, and if they drift to warmer water they will melt.
It takes a lot of heat to melt ice, so that its self could reduce global warming or at minimum cause local cooling. Like ice in a glass of water.

My first no-brainer, mule-stupid basic calc in HS cost me $40, took four AAs, and had a cute red LED display. My TI-30, bought a decade later (mid-Eighties) cost $55, has a nearly-indestructible LCD display, can do calculations my old one could only dream of, and doesn't even have a place for a battery, being completely solar-powered. (It was intended for jobsite use by contractors, surveyors, etc.)
Cute Red LED was about the size of a 20-round M-16 magazine. TI-30 is about half the size of a CD-ROM "jewel box", and fits in my pocket behind my wallet.
Cute Red LED died in two years. I'm not sure, but I think TI-30 might outlive me.

Friends describe her as a "fellow traveler", that is, a communist sympathizer, from her youth, according to a March 27, 2007, Chicago Tribune report. Many Americans harbor leftist views, but not many marry into them, twice. Ann Dunham met and married the Kenyan economics student Barack Obama, Sr, at the University of Hawaii in 1960, and in 1967 married the Indonesian student Lolo Soetero. It is unclear why Soetero's student visa was revoked in 1967 - the fact but not the cause are noted in press accounts. But it is probable that the change in government in Indonesia in 1967, in which the leftist leader Sukarno was deposed, was the motivation.

"As much as a high-school student can, she'd question anything: What's so good about democracy? What's so good about capitalism? What's wrong with communism? What's good about communism?" Wichterman said. "She had what I call an inquiring mind."
She also showed her politics, wearing a campaign button for Adlai Stevenson. And despite flirting with atheism, she went to services at East Shore Unitarian church, a left-leaning congregation in Bellevue.
Is that the most damning "proof' that she "disliked America' (that she wore a Stevenson button and questioned things)

This year they have built a number of bridges around the pillars so that more people can be held safely. Also one can now buy a package of pebbles so you don't have to root around to find the 25 you are supposed to through. This, hopefully, will make it more orderly. The market is likely to jump right off the bat this morning. The futures are up around 2.5% and the Asian markets were cooking over night.
I'm looking for a bit of a market rebound for December as it appears that the market is getting it's head wrapped around the downturn and some things are becoming more certain, which starts cutting down on the perceived risk in the market. Those certainties include:
1. The big players in the financial market are not going to be allowed to go bankrupt.
2. Obama is going to do some massive stimulus package soon after he is sworn in.
3. The Big 3 are going to be bailed out in one way or another. They may be combined, they may have a negotiated bankruptcy of sorts, the details are sketchy at this point.
4. There is not going to be an immediate tax increase.
5. The Democrats are going to re-regulate a lot of these industries.
Now, I'm not saying that all these things are "good" things, but that they are becoming clearer and that is making the future easier to perceive.
Also, I think there is trillions of cash sitting out there on the sidelines earning almost no yield. There has been so much bad news for so long, that at the least sign of consistent good news you, will see a significant flow of cash back into the market.
I think we are at least half way, if not more than halfway through this market turn down. That does not mean that we will be back at 14,000 on the DOW anytime soon.
One big key to recovery, is that several changes have to be made to the regulations:
1. The Community Reinvestment Act needs to be repealed. Otherwise, we will do this again.
2. The "uptick" rule needs to be reinstated for short sales.
3. the "naked short sale" prohibition needs to actually be enforced.
4. There needs to be a trading desk opened for mortgage backed securities so the values can be determined in an open and transparent way.
5. I think there needs to be a better public disclosure of the risk involved in derivatives. It's just too easy right now to play shell games with these things and hide risk from the investors who will eventually get burned.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Once again, we've got the Pakistani two-step on full display. Not only do we know that the ISI is penetrated by the Islamists, but it now appears that one of the former heads of the ISI was involved with al Qaeda as a member of the terrorist group's WMD advisory group.
The Pakistanis have claimed that they attacked one of the LeT terror camps, but that's all that they can do - appear to be cracking down because if they actually did crack down and take out the terrorists and the Islamists in general, the terrorists would likely overthrow the government because of its precarious position vis-a-vis the ISI and its reliance on the Islamists to get elected in the first place.

Zbigniew Brzezinski: Israel's push for Iran strike may hurt U.S. ties
[Link: www.haaretz.com...]
Oh and this part is priceless: "It wouldn't be particularly good for American-Israeli relations, and there will be a lot of resentment against [Israel]," he said. "There already has been some after the war in Iraq."
So now the war in Iraq is also Israel's fault? Well American Jews you ask for it? Back to the Future we go!
My biggest fear is that Israel, in order to keep itself from being obliterated off the map, will unilaterally strike, and then we, the U.S., will not back them and then sell them out...

As sad as that sounds it wouldn't be the last time something like that happened. One reason we know so little that's written from the medieval era and the "Dark Ages" was the habit of recycling parchment. They would grab an old skin with useless, to them, information on it and scrap it clean to start afresh. There are actually professors, scholars, and scientists going over old parchment documents trying to glean what ever they can from them. Why do you think we have gotten so good at learning from old garbage dumps?

According to the Canadian Border Information Service, Quebec residents who buy tires here and declare them at customs pay taxes of 12 and a half percent — 5 percent federal, and 7 and a half percent Quebec. There’s no duty if the tires were manufactured in North America — thanks to the North American Free Trade Agreement. For tires made in Europe or Japan, though, Canada’s customs duty is 7 percent.
That's a lot of tax to pay for new tires.

Good things on Saturday. My sales total for the day was FIVE times what it normally is. Hope other retailers had the same over the weekend. Very good day and I hope it continues (but then I got a letter in the mail from the IRS telling me my payroll tax was wrong for 2005 and I owe them $1000 -bastards).
Other economic observations:
If clothing retail sales are off this year its because the clothes are HORRIBLY UGLY. I have never seen anything like it. Huge cardigans, bows, ruffles, gross fabric, leggings with long sweaters, tulip dresses, poodle skirt looking things. Absolutely horrible. The only thing I bought were a few T-shirts.
On the flip side the Apple store was completely PACKED OUT. Could not move. I paid for my item from the middle of the sales floor-could not even get to the front counter. Perfume counters packed. The mall parking lots were packed (visited 3), the restaurants were packed.
Conclusion: People are more picky with money and want to buy sure things. Clothing this year definitely a no go. Electronics and accessories - YES.

My first post this morning at No. 370:
Fox just ran a brief story about a factory that will not pay its employees back wages due to Bank of America's doing something or other. CBBHO chimed in.
What is a teachers' union doing at a factory protest?
Here's the site. Their "partner" is SubstanceNews.net.
They're really into Peace and Justice in education.

This is interesting. I linked an article from National Review about Obama Derangement Symdrome regarding the birth certificate troofers, and its getting downdinged like mad. David Horowitz, the author of the article was critical of those who are pursuing the lawsuits.
The continuing efforts of a fringe group of conservatives to deny Obama his victory and to lay the basis for the claim that he is not a legitimate president is embarrassing and destructive. The fact that these efforts are being led by Alan Keyes, a demagogue who lost a Senate election to the then-unknown Obama by 42 points, should be a warning in itself.
And it goes from there. I thought it noteworthy that other conservatives rightly think the birth certificate troofers are nuts.

So low gas prices are a sign of recession... hmm things were pretty good in 2004.
They are a sign of depression? Could've fooled me back in 1981-82 when we were paying $1.32/gallon, and that was considered very high, and we were in a major recession. It finally fell to $0.79/gallon during the good times a few years later.

HAVANA – Actor Benicio del Toro says he admires Ernesto Guevara but the revolutionary icon he plays in the recent film biography "Che" would not need to resort to armed struggle if he were alive today.
Del Toro told a news conference Sunday at the Latin American Film Festival in Havana that he respects the Argentine-born Guevara as a "man of consequence," but personally opposes armed struggle.
He said revolutionaries can use elections and other nonviolent methods to promote change in an era when a black man can be elected president of the United States.

In Whispers like Thunder, a projected film about the three Conley sisters' battle to preserve the Wyandot National Burying Ground in Kansas City, Kansas, the British actor Sir Ben Kingsley will portray Senator Curtis, who introduced the bill which kept the land from being sold and converted it to a national monument. The film is produced by Ben Kingsley's, SBK Pictures in association with Luis Moro Productions.

And I DON'T GET IT - Microsoft has refused to ship any computers without VISTA as the O/S for over a year now! How hard can it be to make your software Vista compatible?!
GACK!

Do you think the catastrophe (financial crisis) has been manufactured by or for the MSM? I mean, they say things are dreadful, but are they?
If you tell a co-worker that they look ill, nine times out of ten, they will go home early.
I feel the current economic shift started a couple of years ago when they raised the interest rates from super low to kinda low. Construction came to a screeching halt around here and from there it has snowballed. The media smelled fresh meat and has stirred this thing up to be a horrible economic disaster. I believe the MFM has control over public perception towards everything and they have created this situation to benefit the next president. After Jan. 20th, expect the economic situation to magically turn around.

Pakistan is dissolving in a three sided civil war. THe nukes mean that India has to get to make the call on what to do since they are the ones facing nuclear attack now. Eventually the Pak nuke technology will show up in a shipping container near you. If we can't supply the Army they have to get out. I'm confident that staff officers are reviewing contingency plans now. They always should be anyway. Ideally the non-Taliban elements in the Pak army align with the Urban elites against the radicals and cut a deal with India. It may happen and they may be able to hold the supply line open but it is not a guarantee. I'd love to see an Indian army to the West of Pakistan in Jalabad.

Pak on track to being named terrorist state
The United States is dusting off a long-discarded proposal to declare Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism. But with the Bush administration now in its final six weeks in office, a decision in this regard is being left to the incoming Obama government, sources said, contingent on corrective actions taken in the meantime by Islamabad to the satisfaction of India, US and other countries affected by Pakistan's toxic export of death.
US intelligence circles are now re-evaluating Pakistan's contribution to the war on terror, and the ISI's dominant role in the country and its ties with jihadi outfits, at the behest of the Bush administration. The White House itself lost faith in the Pakistan Army's bonafides several months ago which led to Washington's decision to withdraw support to military ruler Pervez Musharraf and back a new civilian government, officials and congressional aides who spoke on background explained. The decision to dump Musharraf was taken at vice-president Dick Cheney recommendation, they added, because of evidence that Pakistan was continuing to help Taliban elements attacking Nato forces.
Now the Bush administration is even more convinced that the Pakistani Army and its intelligence arm ISI, who still calls the shots in Islamabad, are continuing their toxic policies. But firm action against them is constrained by both the transition phase in Washington and the US dependence on Pakistan to maintain supply lines to its troops in land-locked Afghanistan. Officials are now re-examining options in this regard, particularly US leverage against Islamabad if Pakistan considers interdiction strategies.

Pigs flying moment.
Abbas states that Hamas prevented Palestinians from going on the Haj, something that not even Israel did. Israel did not stand in the way of Palestinians going on their sacred duty to attend haj in Mecca, but Hamas did.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday blamed Hamas for preventing thousands of Palestinians taking part in the haj pilgrimage, saying even Israel had not held back pilgrims from the sacred rites."Unfortunately, this is the first time in the history of the Palestinian people that pilgrims were prevented. Israel never once prevented pilgrims," Abbas told reporters during the haj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
"The pilgrims from Gaza were deprived of haj this year -- hopefully, next year they will be the first to come as part of the pilgrim quota for Gaza."
Palestinian pilgrims bound for the holy city of Mecca were prevented from leaving the Gaza Strip via Egypt on Saturday. The enclave's Hamas Islamist rulers and the rival Fatah leadership in the West Bank blamed each other for the hold-up.
Saudi Arabia was also involved in the dispute.
Saudi Arabia granted visas to Palestinians who registered through the Palestinian Authority run by Abbas's secular Fatah faction.
Hamas asked Saudi Arabia to give visas to some 3,000 people who tried to arrange haj through Hamas authorities in Gaza and some Hamas figures said they would prevent anyone leaving Gaza for the pilgrimage unless Saudi Arabia approved the trips.
Hamas blames Fatah for the mess, and the Saudis say that they were willing to grant the approvals.
Religious tolerance and acceptance, courtesy of Hamas. They don't even care about their own religious obligations. The leaders clearly believe that their obligation is little more than the thrill-kill cult.
