I saw at least 7 police cars pull up as I was leaving home this morning! Literally, just down the street less than 1/4 mile from me:

Part of a mobile home park was evacuated while police closed in on a murder suspect Monday afternoon.

It happened at the Sunrise Mobile Home Park on Sahara, near Hollywood.

After several hours of negotiations officers went into the mobile home and found the suspect dead from a self inflicted gun shot wound.

Officials are not releasing any other details about what happened.

Evening every one. Within the last hour the rain has turned into snow. We were expecting 10 to 20 inches but the revised forecast says 4 to 6 inches.

Rain is better because you don't have to shovel. But 3 weeks of rain is enough.

Really? 1982? I know that the first person in my school to have a CD player was in 1986. Only reason why, was because his father owned an electronics store. Even the tape copies he made were superior.

I actually got my aunt & uncle a DVD (season one of Ice Road Truckers) back in like August and the effort sort of petered out from there because I was too busy congratulating myself on all that early shopping I managed to accomplish...

That song, and its author make for a very interesting bit of American History. I made it the subject of a TRIVIA quiz back in August, I think. Here was my question as I posited it at that time.

Part of the problem of doing Trivia is coming up with puzzles that you Lizards can't just Google right away and find the answer.

So, this particular Trivia question has two parts, I am looking for the name of the man, and the name of the song.

This particular songwriter was born in Boston in 1822 to an Abolitionist minister.
His first name was James.
His life was riddled with a series of failures, in business, in politics, in religion, and later in war.
He went to San Francisco in 1849 to open a business, which burned.
In 1853 he followed his brother John to Savannah, GA. where they had posts with the Unitarian congregation.
John was the Reverend and James was the organist and musical director.
The church failed because of its Abolitionist creed, which was unpopular at the time in the South.
In 1856, his first wife, Millicent, died of tuberculosis.
With the coming of the War, James served the Confederacy as a clerk. During this time his father was a chaplain in the Union Army.
Once again, James found his career at an end. The end of the war found him alive, but ruined. Again.
But this man, who lived a life of obscurity and dismal fortune is responsible for bringing much happiness to the lives of countless millions of others.
For, he wrote a song in 1857, and obtained copyright to it. He never made any money from the song in his lifetime.
Nothing ever became of it while James lived. Like many of the other songs he wrote, they were forgotten.
Later, in 1880 his son had a heck of a time even renewing the copyright to the song, which still had not made a dollar.
In 1898, the song was recorded by the Edison Male Quartette (on an Edison brown wax cylinder, number 2218).

Keep up the good work.

One of my photo profs made us take a metal coat hanger, bent it into a circle, toss it into the air and take 24 photos of what ever was inside of the coat hanger. It is easy if it gets stuck in a tree or bush but if it lands on the grass or a paved surface it can get tricky.

I posted this last night, but if I recall correctly, Realwest wanted to see it and he was gone by that time, so I'm re-posting.

FINALLY made it off jury duty, thank the gods! Unfortunately, it ended up as a hung jury (medical negligence case), with 11 of us finding for the defendant and 1 for the plaintiffs. But I'm off the hook for at least two years, and if I can go 5, I'll be off permanently because of age. The only good part of an otherwise totally unpleasant experience was right at the end, after we'd reported our 11-1 deadlock to the judge and lawyers, when the judge called our bailiff to the bench and read our Note of Appreciation into the record before giving it to her. Since it was my idea, and I composed and typed the note, I found that very personally satisfying.

It read:

"We, the jurors and alternates in the 01-05 December 2008 trial to which she was assigned, would like to express our appreciation and gratitude for (and to) our bailiff, [name redacted]. Her unfailing cheerfulness, courtesy, and helpfulness to “her jury” show her to be an outstanding credit to her profession."

It was signed by all 14 of us, plus my husband. I can't swear to it, since His Honor has an excellent poker face, but I think he enjoyed reading it into the record, and our Den Mother -- er, bailiff -- was smiling as broadly as anyone I've ever seen, and looked suspiciously bright-eyed. She thanked us a lot, then later (when I was at the guard station waiting for Mr. E to arrive from home to pick me up) said she'd never gotten anything like that before, and planned to frame it and hang it with her certificates from her earlier career in Corrections at New York's Ryker Island.

I find it hard to believe that someone like Kim wouldn't have gotten something like that before, considering how well she treated us, and how easy it is to express appreciation, but her reaction made me even gladder I'd had the idea and followed up on it.

Hells! People who do an unusually good job deserve recognition for it every bit as much as people who do a crappy job deserve criticism! Do it, folks -- these are heroes, in small ways, every bit as much as our military are in larger ways. Anyone who deals with the general public on a daily basis and can maintain equilibrium, never mind going beyond duty requirements for them (it?), deserves courtesy at a minimum, and compliments when appropriate.

Huh, got off my own subject and onto a pet rant again, didn't I? Well, no apologies; it needs said from time to time.

I will say this, these students are smarter than the ones I went to college with.

As much as I feel for any business that's going through a tough time, especilly one that has to lay off workers, who is the state of Ill to tell a private business (Bank of America, in this case) what to do?
On the other hand, it is well within the states rights to cease doing business with the bank for whatever reason, but for a Government entity to threaten a private business pre-emptively just strikes me as wrong

Funny, I see that as free-market suasion. Government entities wouldn't deal with a private business that discriminated on the basis of race, etc. I like the idea of a GE doing what it can to curb the apparent greediness (at the cost of the "little guys") CEOs.

Problem is, the state didn't "give" BoA anything. It's the Feds that are backing the bailout. And from what i've read most of the 'money" isn't even in the pipeline yet so BoA at this time just may not even have the liquidity to make the loan

No the individual state din't give them money, but Bank of America received its bailout and with half of the 700billion from the bailout spent Bank of America has received moneys. They had enough liquid assets lying around to buy out Merril Lynch and put bids in on another bank that was going under they can make good on htere end of the bargain.

I know when I got my SBA backed loan back in the 80's I didn;'t have to tell the state of Massachusetts nor any Fed agency what I was doing with it. So I click over to an old movie, Out of the Past. Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum, how are you going to go wrong here? I'm struck by a background detail. After Kirk (the bad guy, a gangster) hires Mitchum (a not totally good guy, but in comparison...) to find the dame Mitchum and his partner walk out to the elevator.

The elevator door is decorated with a border of swastikas. Movie has a '47 date on it, so they knew what swastikas were. Maybe they're there to indicate that Kirk is a bad man.

I'm a taxpayer too. If the government thinks it has to throw cash at businesses , put my money to work funding enterprises that will be able to succeed in the long run, not to the failed Sharper Image store at the dead mall.

but the GOV'T wasn;'t involved, except to insure thet bank that the gov't would back the loan if i didn't. In your scenario, the Gov't (state) is in essence telling the bank what to do. It's analogous to the Gov't telling my old bank what they should have done with my loan

It's not a celtic cross. That's something totally different. It's a combination of two norse runes and it's also known as a sun wheel. I am not sure what the Hindu's or Bhuddists get the symbology from but I think it also represents the sun too.
