IL Governor Arrested for Trying to 'Sell' Obama's Senate Seat

Politics | Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 8:28:58 am PST

From the political culture that gave us our shiny new Hopenchange president-elect: Illinois governor arrested for trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat.

Washington - Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested Tuesday on charges of trying to sell US president-elect Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat.

Court-appointed wiretaps last month intercepted Blagojevich conspiring to sell the Senate seat that Obama resigned on November 16, according to US Attorney Patrick J Fitzgerald. In return, as recorded in various conversations, he sought a cabinet post, an ambassadorship or a seat on a corporate board for his wife.

Democrat Blagojevich, 51, and his chief of staff John Harris, 46, who were to appear later Tuesday in a federal court in Chicago, are charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

‘The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering,’ Fitzgerald said in a statement.

‘They allege that Blagojevich put a ‘for sale’ sign on the naming of a United States Senator, involved himself personally in pay-to- play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism.’

They are also accused of sacking members of the Chicago Tribune editorial board who were critical of the governor, according to a Justice Department statement.

UPDATE at 12/9/08 8:32:06 am:

And when a Democratic politician is arrested like this, you know what that means; it’s time to play “Guess That Party!

Red: [narrating] I wish I could tell you that Rod fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Rod would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Rod - that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.

How long do you have to spend with someone before you know they are unethical? I can usually tell within a few conversations, little things leak out.

Obama knew all these guys were dirty, because he himself is deceptive and unethical. Obama remained partners and worked with these guys for years playing the game, going along to get along.

Contrast with Palin who not only could detect dirt, but has the spine and intestinal fortitude to kick bad actors to the curb. She has a rare but desperately needed talent. Bad actors fear her with good reason.

related must read.

Reactionary liberalism, the ideology of many Democrats, holds that inconvenient rights, such as secret ballots in unionization elections, should be repealed; that existing failures, such as GM, should be preserved; and, with special perversity, that repealed mistakes, such as the "fairness doctrine," should be repeated. That Orwellian name was designed to disguise the doctrine's use as the government's instrument for preventing fair competition in the broadcasting of political commentary.

Questions.

Can Obama be inaugurated if he's under indictment for bribery?

Can Obama pardon Blagojevich if he doesn't?

Does Obama engender the same loyalty as "Friends of Bill" AKA Susan McDougal, who kept her mouth shut, and went to jail rather than squeal on the Clintons?

Will somebody squeal on Obama to avoid jail time?

Can the media recall those Obama Commemorative Pins, Plates, Books before Jan. 20?

Can the liberal media survive this? This investigation has been going on for THREE YEARS. Earlier this year during the primaries there was talk of a major scandal that would engulf a Democrat. It wasn't Edwards.

Did the mainstream media cover this up?

Will the media cover for Obama this time?

I've read comments here time and time again about how corrupt Chicago politics are. In the back of my mind I was thinking the corruption was probably no different than any other place in the US ... until now. What utterly blatant corruption, selling a Senate seat confirmation! What a friggin dumb ass though, apparently got caught red handed. I can't wait to find out who those #1, #2, #3 candidates really were, and now with these Rezko/Obama subpoenas I'm looking forward to some pretty interesting threads here at LGF.

Here's the link to the GRAND JURY SUBPOENAS ISSUED ON REZKO/OBAMA LAND DEAL

A former Illinois bank official, now claiming whistleblower status, says bank officials replaced a loan reappraisal that he prepared for a Chicago property that was purchased by the wife of now-convicted felon Tony Rezko, part of which was later sold to next-door neighbor Barack Obama.

The complaint also said that the grand jury wanted information on Mrs. Rezko's checking account and loan file and that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) had audited the Rezko file - although Mr. Connor's lower reappraisal had been replaced with a higher amount.

"Connor's internal whistle-blowing activity at Mutual Bank implicates Mutual Bank and the potentially guilty officers thereof to prosecution under federal and Illinois statutes," said the complaint, filed by attorney Glenn R. Gaffney.

The complaint said Mutual Bank officials could be guilty of making false statements, willfully overvaluing property, bank fraud, witness retaliation, willful violation of a lawful subpoena, FDIC violations, and state banking regulations.

The only advange to Biden would be that the press wouldn't cover for him, and he'd be one term. So far Obama seems to be doing okay, well better than I expected, kind of a Bill Clinton, who if nothing elese did an okay job on economic issues. If Obama gets indicted our finacial situation will be even further in the crapper, as one of the main problems is uncertainty. Most of the people I know have very steady jobs and incomes, are years from retirement and no one is spending any more. Add a presidential scandal to the mix and it will be more disaster.

And meanwhile, the barbarian rampage continues in Greece:

In Athens, rioters torched the capital's massive Christmas tree in central Syntagma Square. As the hooded youths moved on, some protesters posed for photos in front of the blaze, and others sang the Greek version of "O Christmas Tree."

The windows of two of Athens' luxury hotels, the Athens Plaza and the Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square, were smashed. A hotel guard at the Athens Plaza said its guests had been evacuated.

In New York terms, this would be like rioters torching the Rockefeller Center tree, then vandalizing the Plaza and the Waldorf-Astoria, with police unable or unwilling to stop them. Astonishing.

I wouldn't say that. There needs to be some mystery with a man. The more you withhold (in the beginning) makes a chick wonder (remember we think too much). Slowly give her information. Wait a couple of days between calls. Then, she will think you are MAKING time to call her. You still need to be sweet and don't stand her up or anything, just do it SLOW.

NY Times

As Mr. Blagojevich, a Democrat, mulled the Senate appointment, prosecutors say, he discussed gaining “a substantial salary” at a nonprofit foundation or organization connected to labor unions, placing his wife on corporate boards where she might earn as much as $150,000 a year and trying to gain promises of campaign money, or even a cabinet post or ambassadorship, for himself.

I think the 2 examples you cite are indicative of where we've come as a people. Obama is exalted and Palin is derided.........makes me sad and fearful for the future because this is just the start......

Iran rejects Obama's 'carrot-and-stick' proposal

Iran on Monday rejected a proposal by President-elect Barack Obama that a combination of economic incentives and tighter sanctions might persuade the Iranian government to change its behavior. Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the international community could develop a set of incentives that would persuade Iran to alter its nuclear program.
But Iran has rejected past offers of economic incentives by the international community in exchange for scaling back its nuclear activities, a sentiment echoed Monday by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi. "The carrot-and-stick policy has no benefit," Qashqavi said. "It is unacceptable and failed." He reiterated Iran's refusal to suspend enrichment and said the U.S. must recognize Iran's "nuclear right" before the country would dispel concerns about its program

But.....but.....but.....

Good ammunition. And very reasonably priced, given the ammo I've been able to find locally. While it'l suck to waste the money, you ought to fire a box of them through your weapon to get a feel for how well they willl perform in it. Some 1911s have problems feeding certain hollopoints.

You wouldn't want the first time you ran any defensive loads through the gun be when the flag goes up on the street. And find that your personal weapon chokes on it.

I found your next gun. That is, when you think about it, a rather good price. This is the first one of these I've seen for sale in at least ten years.

Weird thing is, a few years ago, Blago ticked off his father in law, and Mell publicly turned against Blago. Put daughter Patty Mell Blago in a sad spot. Ahh, Chicago.

If Obama is tied to the Governor's corruption then it will not benefit any Party or person at all - let alone the Nation. If you're in the mood to hope for something, then hope that Obama is clean as a whistle.

Yes, it would be more fun to glory in the possible association between the two, but it is a lower thought and shouldn't be speculated willy-nilly.

From the link:

Democrat Blagojevich, 51, and his chief of staff John Harris, 46, who were to appear later Tuesday in a federal court in Chicago, are charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery.

Now is also a good time to remember that the last governor, a Republican, is in jail too. He sold drivers licenses to incompetent, habitual drunks. People died.

Illinois politics is corrupt from side to side and top to bottom. No party even approximates clean. The Democrats are worse, for now, because they hold all the major offices. More scope for corruption.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges on Tuesday, including trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by fellow Democrat President-elect Barack Obama, federal prosecutors said.

While Obama has long distanced himself from the governor -- who has been under investigation on other issues for months -- Blagojevich's arrest was likely to be an embarrassment to the president-elect, who takes office on January 20

re: #402 bellamags

In that price range I'd recommend an SKS. You can get a real good gun in your price range. I prefer the Russian manufactured weapons, forllowed by European East Block (i.e. Poland, Czech, Yougoslav). You can find them all dolled up with after-market accessories, if that's what you want.

That is if you are wanting a real combat rifle. If you are just looking for a weapon for target practice, it doesn't get much better than the Ruger 10/22. You can doll them up immensly, depending on your budget. The only reason I don't reccommend them as a combat arm is that .22LR really isn't powerful enough to even condifer for an SMG role.

But they Are a lot of fun.

492 Kenneth  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 9:27:36am

ABC News, via Drudge, has more from one of Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich's secretly recorded phone calls:

"I've got this thing and it's f***ing golden, and, uh, uh, I'm just not giving it up for f***in' nothing. I'm not gonna do it. And I can always use it. I can parachute me there," Blagojevich said in a phone call secretly recorded by the FBI on November 5, the day after the election, according to the affidavit.

The FBI affidavit said Blagojevich had been told by an adviser "the President-elect can get ROD BLAGOJEVICH's wife on paid corporate boards in exchange for naming the President-elect's pick to the Senate."

Told by two other advisers he has to "suck it up" for two years, the FBI says it heard Blagojevich complain he has to give this "motherf***er [the President-elect] his Senator. F*** him. For nothing? F*** him."

493 tfc3rid  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 9:27:38am

Interesting fact. NRO mentions that the prosecutor has been very good about going after corruption in Chicago. Also that Obama may fire him after he (Obama) gets in office. That his indictment prevents a firing.

Good news for the law. I wondered about that...with Democrats in control of everything, who will investigate corrupt Democrats?

In that price range I'd recommend an SKS. You can get a real good gun in your price range. I prefer the Russian manufactured weapons, forllowed by European East Block (i.e. Poland, Czech, Yougoslav). You can find them all dolled up with after-market accessories, if that's what you want. lot of fun.

I hate to turn this into a gun forum (no, I don't really mind at all), but I just purchased a Springfield SOCOM 16 (.308 or 7.62).

Wow, what fun. I put an AimPoint red dot on it and sighted it to 150 yards. Yum.

During a wiretapped November 10 call, a frustrated and financially strapped Blagojevich referred to Obama as a "motherfucker" and said that we would not appoint an ally of the President-elect to the Senate vacancy if "I don't get anything." Referring to Obama, Blagojevich exclaimed, "Fuck him. For nothing? Fuck him." In a November 11 conversation, Blagojevich remarked that he knew Obama wanted Valerie Jarrett, a longtime confidante, to succeed him, "but they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. Fuck them."

It would seem Obama knew about this but wouldn't play ball.

Exactly. Good analysis.

"Appointments" indicates something presidential. Of course there is likely enough of a degree of plausible deniability from Obama's position here, but also enough stink to perhaps make him smell worse.

I read through the whole indictment. It is ALL about Blagovich attempting to sell the appointment to the Senate in exchange for favors, quid-pro-quo appointments and cash upfront. The significant thing is this:

Blago was not pushing his sales pitch on the potential Senators. Blago was pushing his sales pitch on a number of advisors & consultants who claimed to be speaking for the president-elect. That is, the negotiations through intermediaries were between Blago & Obama.

Unless the FBI has more information which exhonorated the president-elect, this looks like a very bad day indeed in Hopey-Changey Land.

This is from the Trib, from the press conference:

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said today that arrested Gov. Rod Blagojevich "has taken us to a truly new low" and went on "a political corruption crime spree. We acted to stop that crime spree."

Fitzgerald also accused Blagojevich of attempting "to sell the U.S. Senate seat" that President-elect Barack Obama vacated.

The remarks came at a news conference to discuss charges against Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris.

Blagojevich and Harris are scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan.

Fitzgerald talked about recordings in which Blagojevich allegedly talked in frank language about how he would try to leverage the best value out of the Obama U.S. Senate seat.

"The conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave," Fitzgerald said, quoting Blagojevich as saying the Senate seat is "a bleeping valuable thing. You just don't give it away....I've got this thing and it's bleeping golden."

Blagojevich wasn't against the corrupt deal, he was against "being stiffed in the corrupt deal," Fitzgerald said.

Robert Grant, FBI special agent in charge of the Chicago office, said the arrest of Blagojevich should serve as notice that "business as usual will no longer be tolerated. That selling your office for personal gain is a thing of the past."

He also characterized Illinois' place in the pantheon on political corruption.

"If it isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor," Grant said. "Even the most cynical agents in our office were shocked."

I don't suppose there's any chance of getting either Mayor Daly or Dick Durbin on these charges? Both of those guys disgust me, particularly Turbin Durbin.

Daley, maybe. He's the Teflon Don of Chicago. A slippery Godfather he is.

Durbin, no. Dickhead Durbin is an asshole, yes, but nowhere as near as corrupt as, and not in the middle of the Combine.

re: #441 Walter L. Newton

I'm talking about certain comments about tying Obama to something illegal here. Some Lizards have actually talked about "President Biden."

And what the fuck does Rev. Wright lecture about Dec 7 being the day we dropped the big one on Hiroshima have to do with this, in regards to "blogs" arrest?

I'm sorry. This almost sounds like ODS. Are we no better than the KosKids?

Yeah, you're right. There is no proof and its not worth looking at. There is no evidence. Well, not until there is evidence.
Is there some Walter F Newton rule that all comments have to be related? Can't stand some free association? Obama, Wright, Blagovich, Ayers, Rezko. Oops. What does that have to do with anything?

And if you are relating my rather mild comment to the Kos Kidz, you obviously don't read them much.

God, I couldn't afford to run a full box of bullets more than once a year. lol.

I'd send out invites for others to watch it though and make it a yearly event. Maybe do it at dusk.

Interesting note I learned from the book "House to House" is that sometimes the SAW gets stuck "on" and won't stop firing. I guess it's kind of a 'slam-fire' thing, but that's gotta be an uncomfortable feeling.

Something is rotten in the state of Illinois. But I guess you all knew that.

Here's a story:

[Link: www.chicagotribune.com...]

It seems Mrs. Blago was hired by a company with the thought that she could bring in state business.

Hunh? This is legal? And if it is legal, WHY is it legal? Can Michelle go get a job promising Federal business? Contos, the guy that hired and fired her, talks about it like it was just business as usual. Didn't it occur to someone that Governor's wife (or husbands), should not be getting jobs involving state contracts?

That might be correct. Blago sure sounded like the motivated party in the deal. Obama's representatives were trying to get their candidate chosen & Blago was tying to get as much for it as he could. It is possible the "Washington advisers" were FBI agents or were working with the FBI while posing as Obama's people. At this moment, we don't know.

Apparently, in an attempt to make sure Illinois state government can continue functioning, someone there had the good sense to pass a law that does give some executive powers to an Illinois governor while he is in jail.

here's how the coverage headlines looked on July 29th , the day of his indictment:

ABC

Chicago Tribune

CNN

CBS

NYTimes

Every single one of them has the word Republican either in the headline or in the first couple of sentences.

ABC News, via Drudge, has more from one of Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich's secretly recorded phone calls:

I know it's the Chicago Machine we're talking about, but even I think ol' Blago's got a huge set of huevos for even considering auctioning off Dear Leader's Senate seat to the highest bidder, considering the heat that was already on him from the FBI and Fitzgerald.

619 ceemack  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 5:33:03pm

So Barry gets mired in one scandal, then another, before he even moves into the White House.

Suppose they end up being enough to drive him out of office? Doubtful, given the way the MSM will downplay it all, but just suppose.

Then we wind up with President Biden. Brother, if you thought Bush was dumb, wait until you see President Biden.

I think by 2010 the whole country would be so deep in buyer's remorse they'd want to go ahead and do the whole election thing over again. "Screw it...let's just do it two years early."

With Soro’s checkbook handy it was probably a lot.

621 eaglewingz08  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 5:26:03am

Looks like fed prosecutor Fitzgerald got some job security. Obama wouldn't dare fire him now that he's indicted a big IL dem politico. Moreover the lefties can't call Fitzgerald a loose cannon or a rightwing polical assasain after he got Libby convicted. The only decent thing that I saw, and it shows Obama and/or his team having some rudimentary political instincts, in denying Blago's request for a cabinet position and only showing 'appreciation'. It shows at the least that Obama probably knew that emails and/or phone conversations were probably being monitored after Rezko started talking. Blago probably was left out of the gene pool by failing to realize this himself.
