The Daily Dish’s Imaginary LGF

Patrick Appel responds to my post yesterday about Andrew Sullivan’s weird obsession with the ludicrous Trig Palin conspiracy theory, by taking a slap at LGF: Hashing It Out.

The tolerance of dissent is among my favorite aspects of the Dish. I often select Dissents Of The Day for Andrew to keep him honest, and I make sure he links to bloggers who challenge him. LGF and Michelle Malkin are gleeful because I called Andrew out over the Palin baby rumors, but I can’t imagine that either blog would ever allow this type of open debate.

Appel clearly has no idea what happens at LGF, where we have more than 5,000 comments a day debating every topic under the sun from every viewpoint. The key word in his response is “imagine,” because he apparently has an imaginary LGF in mind.

But “debating” a loony conspiracy theory? Hey, the Daily Dish has lots of that!

It is, quite honestly, this intense focus that won them the last election. The "problem" with the right is that we have principles that we won't sacrifice under ANY circumstances.
Although they'll find another scapegoat, it's a good bet that it won't be nearly as powerful as the Anti-Bush mantra.
Although the anti-"Wall Street",anti-"executive", and generally anti-capitalist message is gaining alarming momentum in the entertainment industry (the post-modern political arena.)

I'm just amazed at how wrong the perception of LGF is by lefties. While Charles runs a tight ship and has no tolerance for idiots, there's always a wide range of viewpoints discussed. In fact, I find lefty blogs like DU and Daily Kos far more restrictive and virulent than LGF. Hell, DU will ban and delete anyone who isn't a Democrat and/or liberal! Yet the left always pats itself on the back for it's "tolerance" and "diversity" while slimming LGF and other right wing blogs as intolerant. Can you say "projection?"

Clearly, they don't come here much, if at all. Kinda like all those people who say Rush Limbaugh is this or that but then admit they never hear his radio show. It's what they've "heard."

With this ridiculous assertion that Trig Palin is not Sarah's child-

2. No other theory has been presented to supplant the discredited position above

So-called progressives do not like being challenged. True liberals (my distinction) enjoy debating the issues and let truth determine the outcome. Of course, it's a choice of the words you want to use, but I was raised on the classical definition of liberal being someone who considered all sides before drawing a conclusion.

NRA has a page on their site that briefs you on all the state laws, and what to do when transferring a firearm into a particular state... you can google around and find it. Florida should be pretty cool on the subject, I think.

If by "this type" he means a free debate of opposing viewpoints, then he is clearly wrong. But if he means a debate about whether a sitting state Governor actually had a fake pregnancy to cover for that of a teenage child despite all facts, evidence, attending doctor testimony, and ON THE SCENE MEDIA COVERAGE to the contrary, then yes - LGF would not have that type of debate because we are not morons.

I have to confess that I only go to Michelle Malkin's site or Hot Air once in a while - unless linked to it here, so I can't really speak to them.
But if this person thinks we don't have debates on LGF - sometimes over some pretty "sensitive" stuff, where commenters challenge each other and sometimes Charles over certain facts or interpretation of events, or where LGFer's present news that they have just heard and we all debate the import of that news item, then Charles is absolutely correct: he's NEVER read LGF.
This is still the toughtest room in the blogosphere - if you don't know your stuff or can't link to material that supports what you say, stay the hell off LGF.

My Brit friend's firearms license covered 50 rounds of pistol ammunition for each calibre (British!) that he was allowed on his "ticket".

Don't have .45 ACP on your ticket? Can't buy it! Don't have the club proof that you used your 50? Can't buy it!

I disagree. We rarely debate.

Mr. Appel sounds a bit huffy and defensive. As if there were some sort of nobility in debating lies, innuendo, and out-and-out slander, as opposed to real topics.

Crap charles i quoted a deleted comment..It was so out of line..
Bring down the wacking stick..I know it's not me..

It wasn't yet deleted when I answered it, but I should've figured it would be, and forfended.

Mea culpa.

All I can say is Wow!
Only in dhimmitude to Islam do folks self-censor before the fact so as to be better than that!
They refuse to say anything about anything even vaguely off the Koranic reservation.
I never got a chance to see what the poster commented on BEFORE it was deleted by Charles, but it apparently (to the writer of the above) required some sort of response.
Once deletion was the official response however, this quote came out.
Pretty soon that poster won't be saying anything contrary to any poster, lest the original post gets deleted and he obviously fears getting reported so much he just won't open a conversation.
So, where does that leave conversation here?
Is there a code of conversations that are OK?
Is there a list (and don't be my dad saying ''religion and politics") of prohibited subjects within threads?
When Charles condensed the front page's left-hand side did he hide a set of new rules I might have missed?

Just like yesterday, with the moronic claims of 1st Amendment/Free Speech/and Governmental-like censorship, however the truth of the underlying fact doesn't mean that the conclusion is also true.

Thus, although many topics are "not acceptable" on LGF, that hardly means that open debate is non-existent, or disallowed on LGF - as this author claims.

At the top of each thread you'll find the following

Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

In addition, it's generally frowned upon by the LGF community to make racist, Anti-Semitic, Homophobic or "calls to genocide" types of comments. And it's always smart not to personally attack your host- ya know, the guy who owns this place.
We welcome civilized debate here, we aren't especially overjoyed with those who come here to post comments designed to simply "stir the pot" but Charles usually let's US take care of those kinds of posters.
I'm about to celebrate my Fifth year on LGF - before registration and yes indeedy the comments have been "toned down" but only in the sense that we've pretty much stopped cursing people. With exceptions.

How do think you guys will handle the World Cup?

Are you up for the task?

Will Jo-burg be on lock down?

We did it with the Rugby and Cricket World Cups. The whole country will be in lock down. When the government wants something done they have the will to generally get things done. This will not be a Germany or France WC but more like a Brazil or Argentina one.

You know that's what I think happened.
The poster last night must have used the ''quote'' button when he replied to the poster whose comment was deleted.
Then he was all over himself apologetic that he'd done so.
Had he merely used the ''reply'' button he wouldn't have written what I quoted above...and thereby given web sites like "Daily Dish," ammunition.

re: #261 mean Gene

I wasn't comparing the LGF community to any Muslims at all.
I was comparing them to the non-Muslims of Europe and the USA/Canada who self-censor rather than, say, publish a book about the young wife of Mohammad.
There are laws protecting freedom of the press in, say, the USA.
But the writer of "The Jewel of Medina," had to go out of the country to get her book about Aisha published.

That's just ludicrous. The deleted comment you're referring to was insulting, rude, and nasty, and I have no intention of leaving such comments up just so that you can see what they say.

And yes, I am the one who decides which comments are deleted (along with a few monitors who understand the boundaries), and I make no apologies for that. This is my website and if you don't like that fact, you're welcome to start your own blog and see how far you get with completely open comments.

286 mean Gene  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 10:35:54am

re: #279 Dianna

Dianne, I was trying to address the topic here at THIS thread.
That there are web sites which look at comments on LGF and find stuff like what I pointed out.
Sorry if it seems I'm helping the bad guys, but they can do searches for ammunition without my help.
Was this supposed to simply be an open thread?
Or was it about the kinds of stuff "Daily Dish'' supposedly falsely accuses LGF of?
Because, if it's merely an open thread I'm perfectly willing to think about something other than this:

The Daily Dish's Imaginary LGF

Moonbats %P% Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 9:14:59 am PST

Back when you could get 7.62X39 for $80 a thousand rounds, I acquired some. As much as I could afford, really. I'll buy ammo at wally world, when they have what I'm looking for. And of course, there's .22. I generally buy the 500 round bricks. It adds up pretty quickly. Now if I just had some belted 8mm and the MG-42 I've got my eye on...

Iron if we are found with 1 round of AK ammo here we are in deeper shit than you can ever believe. Terrorist weapon and all that crap. You can not even own an AK here legally

291 mean Gene  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 10:41:30am

re: #285 Charles

I was actually fine with that, Charles...as you might have noted last night I had nothing to say about any of it.

This morning's topic simply brought it to mind as an example (not the idea of deleting a comment or two) as an example of how folks like at the Daily Dish read these threads (and, yes, I know they have a pre-conceived agenda as they read here).

I'm pretty sure that, as I get older (and IIRC I'm a bit older than you, Charles) I'm not as good at communicating as clearly as I'd like with people.
Maybe I was out of line in thinking that stuff like that applied so perfectly to why web sites like Daily Dish are saying what they do.

People need to get a freakin' grip on the fact that the parameters of any discussion on a blog are subject to the discretion of the person moderating and paying for the site. It's like being invited into someone's living room. You can hope and expect to be treated decently but you can also expect to be shown the door by the owner if you can't refrain from douchebaggery.

I have only fired the AK in the dark confines of the bush. Never fired an M-14/16 but I am told that that the AK can sit under water, be dragged through the sand, mud and be run over by a Bradly and still fire when you pull the trigger. Why do you think it is so popular in Africa. Can't be broken.

322 No. Just, no.  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 11:13:32am

Actually, Appel is right. There is no lively civic debate here on LGF. He has found (us) out. You see, Charles has a serious case of multiple personality disorder, and has splintered into 20,000 different people, some of whom like to call the other parts of his fractured personality names.

Is there a code of conversations that are OK?

Wow man. . .all I can say is, the only rule I've ever adhered to here, is the same one I follow everywhere; Don't Be a Jackass.

As far as I know, none of my comments have ever been deleted. . .not even the one that (due to poor wording on my part) seemed an inflammatory comment regarding religions in general.

I've been a long-time moderator on a message board myself, and as far as I can tell, Charles handles it pretty well here. Granted, I don't often see what the offending comment was before it's deleted, but the few times I have, the comment deserved deletion.

I don't know why there are so many people up on some sort of deletion/censorship high-horse here lately. Is it the new hatchlings getting used to the scene?

He might be any of those three for having taken the "Daily Dish" gig in the first place -- but as long as that's his job, I'm not going to judge his published statements too harshly. I mean, can you imagine what a tightrope walk that must be, as you're desperately trying to find some balance between rationality and NOT PISSING OFF ANDREW?

The question for Patrick Appel is: do you really need this on your résumé?

They will find another scapegoat.

Well, you need to remember that moonbats aren't all that bright. They hate any Republican so un-groovy as to get elected President, and have (or can fake) sufficient grasp of causality that they don't usually try to point the finger of blame beyond a Democrat no longer in office.

Thus, all we need to predict the moonbats' all-purpose excuse is a list of the names and parties of the current and former Presidents, in reverse chronological order. Disregard any (D)s at the beginning of the list, and all the consecutive (R)s after that are the reason for everything that has gone wrong in the past, or will go wrong in the future.

Yes, you can code a moonbat on an Apple ][. In BASIC.
