US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald describes the charges against Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. The depth of the corruption in this case is mind-boggling; Fitzgerald calls it “a political corruption crime spree.”

I've been listening to Rush Limbaugh on this subject (boy is he ever having fun with it!) and he pointed out two things. That the person who Obama chose to replace him withdrew her name just days before the bust. AND - That the state is now trying to impeach the gov as soon as possible because he can still make appointments from prison.

So amazing!
Just last night I had heard that Jesse Jackson (Jr?) the Rep. was set to get the Senate seat.
But it went into a bidding war instead, I guess.

Just wondering, Blago meets with Jesse Jr. for one & a half hours yesterday & Blago gets busted today, did the Feds hear that conversation & did that seal the deal?

I think comedian Robert Klien had a bit about this. I recall him suggesting that the (relatively) small amount of cash somehow made Jefferson look even more sleazy. If it had been a ton of money, at least he would have looked like a respectable corrupt politician.

Why is this a Illinois phenomena? This is par for the course for politicians period. Lizards, these people are not working for us, they haven't been for about 50 years or more.

It's over. Go ahead, don't believe me, fool yourselves that all your support and campaigning for this person or that person makes ANY difference. It doesn't.

He was expelled after being convicted of taking bribes, filing false tax returns, racketeering, and forcing his aides to perform chores at his farm in Ohio and on his houseboat in Washington, D.C.,[1] and is currently serving out an eight-year prison term with a projected release date of September 2, 2009.[2]

Neither party wanted Fitzgerald here. He is from New York & was nominated by former Senator Fitzgerald (no relation)

Exactly: rather than pursue the case to it's logical ends they will attempt to twist the facts to make the offender appear to be the victim.

That's standard procedure for propagandists, not journalists.

Actually being journalists and pursuing the facts would reveal a very unpleasant (for them) reality.

I read what I could on this and to be honest, I think the wiretaps sort of exonerate Obama. Blagojevich even gripes that the One would not play ball. Anyone else see it this way?

No. I see it as Obama wanted to play hardball to get what he wanted. It's the way it's done here. Blago was pissed that he might be getting stiffed in the corruption.

Sure. Because it's so much better to be like the Republicans and take scandals on the chin, lose seats, lose power, and just whimper into a corner and then try to take the high road when a Dem is in the brief spotlight. Yeah, that's worked out well.

Seriously, thanks to a complicit press, what we "don't know about Obama" could probably fill the Library of Congress, which is a problem unto itself. Boy, days like this make me really proud of my city and state (is 'sarc' really needed?). This is bad. One thing that really pisses me off is that the Gov was trying to shake down Children's Memorial Hospital over on the North side. My dentist used to have his office there, and a cousin got some back surgery there decades ago. It is a first-rate hospital that truly does wonderful work. It was public knowledge that the Gov was a possible Fed target , and yet he continued this stuff anyway. This could eventually take down Pres.-elect Obama, no way he has clean hands in all this. Remember that Agnew got taken down for corruption he did at the state level.

Yeah I have been wondering about this all morning. Technically Obama's seat cannot be filled till he formally resigns it. If Blagojevich is still governer, which in all likelihood he will be since at this point he is only indicted and not convicted, then there is no constitutional way to prevent him from appointing whomever he wants. However practically speaking what person in their right mind would want his appointment now? It would be the kiss of death.

I thought 0 already quit his seat, early. The appointment falls to Blah-go.

Spiro Agnew was a Republican, and hence was the target of intense scrutiny in the media.

Not so BO.

Here is a video clip of Blagojevich rationalizing his ties to Tony Rezko by smearing other politicians for doing the same.

When asked if he regretted his relationship with Rezko, the governor said he was not alone in facing “some of the occupational hazards that go along with being in politics.”

“We presume and hope that people who are helping us are doing things honestly and forthrightly, and then sometimes there are allegations to suggest that maybe not,”

A good map should not be embargoed like an assault weapon just because it's accurate. The idea simply skirts lunacy. Bad guys will use anything at their disposal to be bad. You might as well ban everything that runs on electricity if you're really hell bent on making the world "safer".

These aren't maps but incredibly accurate digital pictures. And anyway, you may or may not have noticed that certain areas are definitely blurred out. So even google does make allowances according to local ordinances or laws.

481 avanti  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 12:14:34pm

From the Fox web site:

"Nothing in the court papers suggested Obama had any part in the discussion.
In fact, Blagojevich allegedly said in the same conversation that Obama most likely would not appoint him as secretary of health and human services or to an ambassadorship because of the negative publicity that has surrounded the governor for three years.
One day later, according to the affidavit, Blagojevich allegedly told an associate he knew Obama wanted a specific Senate candidate but "they're not going to give me anything except appreciation."

He finished the remark with an expletive."

482 Mich-again  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 12:14:45pm

Quote from Blagojevich from that You Tube clip I posted in 411.

"..While there is no specific deadline, I would say around New Years would be as late as we'd go and my hope would be able to be in a position to make a final decision and announcement sometime hopefully before Christmas but I don't want to overpromise that because there could be some circumstances and factors that deveop. Yep, Dick Mel is not a happy camper right now. He has also been referred to as "Dr. Frankenstein" for his role in getting Blago elected as governor, and thus, creating the monster.

Well, if you read the Federal complaint through, they apparently have her on tape negotiating the the terms and conditions of the pay for play.

She also is tight with Rezko.

Could be a whole lot of nervous folks around.

And yes, folks, for those who are not familiar with Chicago politics, it is this corrupt and sleazy.

The reason why Blago was so open about this is this has been how things go in Chicago for decades. There is no way the thought he would actually get prosecuted.

I used to work in the loop many years ago when I was in college, and when you went into the Cook County court building, you could see the bag men going up and down the hallways with their envelopes. And I mean there was no real secret about it.

The phrase "touch the Judge" spoken about as often as "Cubs lose" in Chicago back then.

There are quite a few post-war cars in the movie. It is supposed to be set in 1948 or 1949. Post-WWII, but pre-Korea. Several of the cars are immediately recognizeable...to me, anyway. There is the carcass of a '31 Model A that the kids walk through. A 1937 Terraplane is parked where Ralphie kicks the bullies' ass. You have a point. "All politicians world wide" are basically corrupt.

The original book was set during the great depression (1930's), OZ was made in 38, so it's possible that the production designer of the movie could imagine OZ characters if the movie is set late 39-40.

I should have looked it up on imdb first. 1940 it is.
The Christmas feast at the Chinese restaurant threw me. I always thought the big popularity in those came after the war.

And IMDB says the movie is framed as 1940. So, the production designer took what he was able to come up with. This was a lower budget movie, and trying to stick to all the details can get expensive, sometimes they just go with what they can get or afford.

Overall they did a great job of building sets and filming scenes that could easily pass as circa-1940.

You're probably correct, although the 1946 cars were almost identical to the 1941 models, the automakers having been otherwise occupied during the war. What likely happened, if the movie is supposedly set in 1940, would be that the filmmaker had a '46 Olds available, and knew that most people wouldn't know the difference.

Meanwhile in the Franken / Coleman recount...

Minneapolis Gives Up On "Missing" Ballots

The City of Minneapolis announced tonight that it is giving up its search for the 133 "missing" ballots from a Dinkytown precinct near the University of Minnesota. Reactions to the announcement were counter-intuitive; the Al Franken campaign took it calmly, while Norm Coleman's campaign "questioned suspending the search."

The Coleman camp apparently thinks that calling off the search is a prelude to Franken's effort to have the results of the hand recount rejected in favor of the tally shown on the precinct's tape at the end of the day on November 4. I'm sure they're right about that; Franken will argue that the ballots are gone, but the best evidence of how they were cast is the contemporaneous record of the tape from the voting machine.

That position is not without logic, but it raises an obvious question: if we trust the tapes on the voting machines more than the results of a hand recount of paper ballots, why are we doing the recount at all? There is no obvious good answer to that question, although the precinct's record of the number of voters tallies with the higher number.

"Dead Puppies" was a song he played every night.
And, a guy from our high school kept getting his stuff onto the Dr's show.

Democrats don't resign...they would rather take down the state (or the country) with them. Honorable conduct is a concept that's alien to them.

Well, it all depends on who talks to save their own skins and their relations to Obama and his camp. Rahm Emanuel may be in for a tough time too. Rezko's name keeps coming up.

What we're seeing is the dark underside of Chicago politics - aka sausage factory. They might make a tasty meal, but you don't want to know what goes into making 'em. We're going to get a crash course on what goes on.

Obama may benefit from the fact that he's such a neophyte. He wasn't around long enough to cash in; Blago was attempting to cash on on Obama's ascension to the Presidency (among other things).

I'd have to dig out my research, but I seem to recall Rezkos calling in the Feds just before the election and singing like the proverbial canary. I also seem to recall the Feds clamping a lid on everything until after the election. I'm pretty sure this latest adventure of theirs ties in with that. Not sure how much more is coming out though.

If he's guilty of all that's alleged, I hope they throw him in the stoney lonesome until the Chicago Cubs win the World Series or 2025, whichever comes second. But in another sense, this is just plain enjoyable. It's like when you watch "Cops" and the idiot burglar tries to hide beside a tree in the dark, even though he's wearing light-up sneakers. Until he resigns or is removed Blogo can still appoint the IL Senator to replace Obama.

Last time that happened...
Frank L. Smith (November 24, 1867 - August 20, 1950) was an Illinois politician. He served as a United States Congressman from 1919 to 1921. He was elected by the people of Illinois to the United States Senate 1926, but the Senate never allowed him to take his seat.

I don't have feeling one way or the other about B of A, I just think that is a company goes under and the banks foreclose, you can rest assured that the bank is doing what was agreed upon in the loan papers. Why should the bank have any responsibility for how the company treated the employees? The bank loans money based on ability to repay with interest. If B of A thought Republic could salvage its business and repay the loan, then I'm sure they would've loaned them more money.

Judicial Watch Statement: Blagojevich Arrest Shakes Obama Presidency to Its Core

Contact:
Press Office (phone number available at link)

Washington, DC -- December 9, 2008
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton issued the following statement today in response to the arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich:

"There has been an air of lawlessness around Governor Blagojevich for some time and Judicial Watch applauds U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald for his actions.

"Blagojevich's corruption is no surprise, but its breadth and depravity is shocking. The alleged efforts to sell the Senate seat of Barack Obama are outrageous, but also seem to implicate many other powerful politicians and political players. Especially disturbing are the questions the scandal raises about Barack Obama and his close associates.

"This is a burgeoning crisis for Obama that should shake his presidency to its core.

"The criminal complaint filed today indicates that Obama and his team knew about Blagojevich's efforts to sell Obama's Senate seat. ("Tony" Rezko, Obama friend, fundraiser and real estate partner, is once again implicated in the corrupt activities exposed today.)

"Did Obama report Blagojevich to investigators about any efforts to sell his Senate seat?"

Judicial Watch has been investigating Rod Blagojevich for over two years and has ongoing open records litigation concerning the sale of government jobs for which he was arrested today. Blagojevich has stonewalled and refused to turn over documents to Judicial Watch that could have alerted the American people to his corruption.

Here's Blagojevich Blows His Shot at a Pardon [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

From the complaint:

ROD BLAGOJEVICH said that the consultants (Advisor B and another consultant are believed to be on the call at that time) are telling him that he has to “suck it up” for two years and do nothing and give this “motherf***[the President-elect] his senator. F*** him. For nothing? F*** him.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH states that he will put [Senate Candidate 4]” in the Senate “before I just give f***ing [Senate Candidate 1] a f***ing Senate seat and I don’t get anything.”

If his own people feel like that about him why, I ask myself, should we have to play so nice for four+ years?

(Oh, it'd be ''racist,'' if we did it.)

Heh... not really so hard to say, as long as you know that the "j" in Slavic names is usually pronounced like an English "y": Bla-goy-ye-vich.

Incidentally, I found from Googling that his ethnicity is Serbian, and that his real first name is "Milorad." (Pronounced more or less like "meal o' rod" -- something that he'll have to get used to in the slammer, iffen you know whut ah mean.)

I can understand the speculation that Fitz pulled this one now in order to make it stick before Obama replaces all of the US Attornies, but I also wonder why he didn't wait just a little bit longer to see who would actually pay Blago for the seat. As Rush pointed out earlier today, Fitz let the Scooter Libby trial simmer for two years in order to get a process crime out of it when he knew who the real leaker was.

Can't help but wonder if Fitz pulled the pin now in order to protect others, not necessarily Obama, but possibly other interested parties.

My feelings also!
Posted this on a previous thread: Children's Memorial Hospital is one of the best children's hospital around. This hospital has helped sick children for years (personal experience).
The idea he would threaten to take away promised funding for political gain, is beyond anything. Words cannot express how disgusting I think this is!

Same here. My husband excitedly woke me up with the news and all I could do was say, "It's about time." I rolled over and went back to sleep.

He later told me, "I know you've always said that all Chicago politics is dirty politics, I just never believed how bad it was."

Thank God for Fitz. It takes some cajones to take these people down. Whether or not he follows the leads all the way to THE ONE, we'll have to wait and see. I hope he has it in him.

I have a feeling that that's a big reason Fitzgerald dropped the hammer on Blago now, once he had enough evidence to grab him...Fitzgerald knows he's on borrowed time, because the conventional wisdom is that Obama's gonna Clintonize the Justice Department and fire all of the existing US Attorneys as soon as he takes office, so he needed to get the Rezko and Blago cases sufficiently into the judicial system so that his political successor can't just sweep it under the rug at the behest of Dear Leader and the Chicago Machine without taking a whole lot of heat.

re: #725 taxfreekiller

has the name from the indicment,

Ali Ata been checked,

google search says he is Arab American lobby guy who gave lots of money to this crooked Gov. B.
?

I noted in the indictment that Ali Ata had knowingly written a letter (well, I'll quote it)

18. It was further part of the scheme that in or about
February 25, 2004, at the request of defendant REZKO and for the
purpose of assisting defendant REZKO in defrauding GECC, defendant
ALI ATA signed a letter on IFA letterhead (“the February 2004
letter”) that falsely made it appear that Investor 1 had applied
for financing with the IFA in connection with Investor 1's
acquisition of the Milwaukee and Chicago area pizza restaurants.
The letter, which was addressed to Investor 1 but which defendant
ATA knew that defendant REZKO intended to present to GECC,
represented that:
your request for financing the acquisition of Papa John’s
stores in the Chicago and Milwaukee markets will be
recommended for approval by the Board of Directors of the
Illinois Finance Authority (IFA)
on March 15, 2004.

10
Page 11
IFA will guarantee 50% of the total acquisition cost of $16
million. Closing can be scheduled three weeks after board
approval.
19. As defendant ATA well knew, Investor 1 had not submitted
an application to the IFA, no financing proposal for Investor 1's
purchase of the Chicago and Milwaukee area Papa John’s restaurants
had been reviewed by IFA’s staff, no such financing proposal
existed to be presented for approval by the IFA board, and the
proposed loan guarantee was inconsistent with IFA’s financing
practices and its available financial resources

I guess taqiyya is wending its way into America's dealings with such businessmen.

728 Miggie  Tue, Dec 9, 2008 4:33:11pm

I don't get it. If, as the Reuters article says, ""Obama had the good sense to stay far, far away from Blagojevich and all of his people," said Democratic consultant Dane Strother. "You never saw Blagojevich in Obama's camp, you never saw his name during the campaign. Obama's people were plenty smart enough to stay way away from Blagojevich and all the people around Blagojevich," he said." then what did they know about Blagojevich?

Did they know something or were they smart enough to have Obama stay away just by the looks of things? If it was something they knew, then what was that? If is was just by the look of things, then what specific things led them to give this advice?

If the advisers had suspicions they could have and should have done something about it long ago in addition to just keeping Obama away. It is hard to believe that the Governor and a Senator from the same state and the same party "... had no contact.." with each other. Why, specifically, were things "tense" between the two? Is it a "just no awareness" situation as it was with Rev Wright, William Ayers, et. al.?

This story is hard to swallow. Just from the Obama Seen as Untouched from Scandal headline alone, it looks like the newspapers are still in the tank for Obama. (Who sees him as "untouched"?... the Democratic National Committee? The reporters?)

re: #728 Miggie

I think it was less political savvy than it was payback.
[Link: apnews.myway.com...] notes it this way:

Obama has maintained a cordial but distant relationship with Blagojevich during the governor's tenure. He supported his fellow Democrat for re-election in 2006, even though the governor backed someone else over Obama in the U.S. Senate Democratic primary race in 2004. Obama has said little about the many misconduct allegations that have piled up against Blagojevich, and he has complimented Blagojevich for running "a sound administration" with "the right priorities."

Obama's circle of major Illinois political allies and supporters is largely separate from Blagojevich's, with two major exceptions. Both Obama and Blagojevich got extensive money and support from Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who is now under federal indictment. ...

Absolutely not! But I'd like to see Republicans push the issue of known Democrat corruption - like the guy with the fridge full of cash, and all this stuff oozing out of Chicago. I don't think it's too much to ask to want to see the Republicans actually, you know, FIGHT. Republicans have been pretty good about eradicating known R politicians when they fall, they should be out there pushing the Dems to do the same.

Well, then, I agree! Not just on corruption either, for instance McCain should have been pointing the finger at Dodd, Franks, ACORN, Clinton, and the many other Dems complicit in the financial breakdown.

Rezko was dishing to Fitzgerald by Oct. 7, which accounts for the wiretaps?

I don't think Obama would dare fire Fitzgerald.

Most of the dirt on Obama as a Chicago politician was in Ryan Lizza's July 21 profile in The New Yorker. It was enough to change my vote.

The byzantine goings-on in New York politics now pale by comparison with Illinois. And we even had a Fed takedown of the real mafia in The Bronx in between the State Senate deal (next chapter is Wednesday), civil war in The Bronx Democratic Party, and Gov Paterson's impossible quest for a gay Latina from anywhere north of White Plains to replace Hillary.

By real mafia, I mean the Italian guys. So much has been outsourced to the Albanians, just wasn't the same.

Okay, laugh at my naivete, but I just want more, don't you? Not more corruption, just a spark of decency, and people going into the service of this nation for what talents they have that they might lend to its betterment. There are so many crooks! Selling a senate seat. This is the limit. Yeah, it's a valuable thing, but not for glory and riches. At least in a better world it would be.

Mmmm, anyone hoping this will take down the Obama administration is getting ahead of themselves.

But, anyone pretending there is no problem for Obama is also getting ahead of themselves. His assistant just yesterday admitted they had talked names for his replacement, discussing the convo in detail. Then they claim this was all a mistatement. Mmm, yeah. The reality is you would expect Obama to have had that conversation with Blaggy. The only issue is whether Blaggy tried to get a bribe and how Obama reacted if he did, but it is a little silly to pretend there is no problem.

Btw, I fully expect Obama to claim that "this is not the Blaggy I know..." oh, nevermind, he tried that lame excuse already.

One more thing. For those hoping for his impeachment and removal, um, do you really want a President Biden instead? Really?
