Hey, Lizards!
I love you avatar. I have a little plush Marvin here, he is seated, with his legs out in front of him. I have him on top of my TV. He is looking down into his lap, and between his legs I have placed a nice meteorite from my collection.
It just says something to me, the martian and the rock.

Sure. Imagine something larger than a softball and with more than half of it missing. One side is rounded and the other side looks as if it is broken. It is black and the surface is similar to a volcanic rock on the broken side and smoother on the rounded side. It is heavier than a rock that size "should" be. That is from memory. No scent of 'insensitive, blind putz' from your comments, Van...
Yes, the PAD vacated the airport last week, after crowing about another 'victory', but their karma is about to catch up with them, bigtime... they've turned too many people against them, ruined too much of the economy (500,000 tourist-related jobs MINIMUM expected to be lost next year?) and exposed too much of their cupidity and thuggishness to try this again, even with supporters in Parliament!
So drifting AWAY from ABNORMAL is a better assessment than 'moving toward normal...'

Smoke and Pyro
White Smoke---Covering/Screening only
Yellow Smoke---Designated target (Fire at will)
Purple Smoke---All after is sarcastic
Green Smoke---Kook Identifed
White Star Cluster---All Clear
Yellow Star Cluster---Cease-fire
Red Star Cluster---Danger
Some Examples:
Red says something smart and instead of "ducking," pops white smoke and disengages.
Anyone needing assistance might designate a post (or a thread in the subject line) with yellow smoke.
Prior to typing a sarcastic remark, "pop purple smoke." When removing tounge from cheek, send up a White Star Cluster.
Green star clusters would probaly be most effective for the person on SGT Casey's duty roster with an addition to a subject line.
Yellow star clusters used to designate a friendly under fire or to initiate compromise under a misunderstanding.
Red star custer, any kind of warning.

Doesn't sound like a meteorite. Believe it or not, most rock shops don't know what a real meteorite looks like.
First off, there is no known fall in the Ludlow area. Second, the size of the piece. For it to be larger than a softball, the size of the original boloid would have been massive to have broken up into pieces that size. That boloid would have probably left some impact crater somewhere in that area.
Second, meteorites don't look like volcanic. Volcanic rocks have gas pockets, gas veins etc. Meteorites don't. Except for some shock veins, they are quite solid.
Third, it would not be black inside (well, 99 percent of the time). Stoney chondrites is basically a chocolate brown color, with flecks of iron scattered inside.
Take a magnet to it. If it's not magnetic, it's not a meteorite, unless it's a ferrous based meteor-wrong.

One added point on the color. The chocolate brown color I mentioned above is the inside. A fresh meteorite has a jet black 1-2cm fusion crust on the outside, although that will eventually weather away over the centuries, leaving the outside color the same as the inside. Depending on how long the rock has been sitting on the face of our planet, the fusion crust will be fresh looking, slightly worn looking or totally worn away.

About 50 stoney pieces from different verified falls. Most in the 10-15 gram range.
Irons, I have only 7 specimens, I'm not that impressed with iron meteorites.
And then I have about 30 pounds of North West Africa unclassified pieces, from small 40-50 gram pieces to ones weighing up to a couple of pounds.
I also collect "impacta," which is earth material from craters that have been effected by a meteorite hitting.

Yeah, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably around a 3. :D
Fascinating stuff though.

re: #86 Walter L. Newton
I'm sure you are correct. It is magnetic, though. I found it in a field of volcanic material. This piece was different, which is why I picked it up. We were rockhounding in those days and we brought home many, many rocks, so this really didn't have any great significance as we became more interested in the stone tools we were finding. Then we moved on to archeology.

The opening quote about critics reminded me of the German film director Uwe Boll, who challenged his critics to take him on in the boxing ring. The unfortunate nerds who took him up on it all got KO'd in short order. It's the funniest scene in the Jamie Kennedy documentary "Heckler," which is really more about critics in general than hecklers in comedy clubs. In case anyone's interested, because Kennedy's humor is not specifically of the funny variety. But the doc was pretty interesting, with lots of familiar faces whining, joking or waxing philosophical or psychological about critics.
Oh, and Carrot Top's in it. I hadn't seen the guy for a few years, but he's hilarious-looking now. I doubt if his act is any better, but you should see what he's done to his face, with plastic surgery. I think he's using Michael Jackson's doctor. Plus, he's all pumped-up from lifting weights. Creepy-looking to the max, but he comes off in the doc as one of the more well-adjusted people, able to deal with whatever criticism he receives, and it doesn't seem to bother him. Good for him! :)

The gas pockets will give it away every time. The only time you will find evidence of molten material in an meteorite is in a pallasite, which is a piece of an planetoid from the area between the molten iron core and the stoney mantle.

That pic was taken at a particularly warm moment in my life. I was with an old friend of more that a half-century. We are still friends today.
Interesting, you being a painter, that you should say these things about that pic. Just recently another very old friend (also an artist) asked my permission to do a charcoal drawing of it as a gift to me.
Another coincidence... I, too, am an artist. Don't do much painting, but have done some charcoal, and love pen-and-ink. Lean more toward mechanical art --- commercial/graphic design --- retired now.

The silver Rubicon is mine. The red one belongs to a guy at the Rubicon owners' forum. I just reposted the pics of the red one for my friends. They are pretty spectacular shots.
We haven't been able to get up into the area where the mine is supposed to be yet. We went out over Thanksgiving and the rain had flooded the approach to the canyon and I didn't feel like washing mud out from under the Jeep for days afterward so now we are waiting a few weeks for the road to dry out. I consider myself fortunate that I can still get out there. I love being able to see and touch history, also. Getting that Rubicon was a step toward eliminating any excuses I had to not go out there. THe previuos Jeep I had didn't have enough guts for the rough trails out there.
It's only a forty mile trip to the Panamints and who knows, maybe the caverns are more than just an old legend. I plan to keep going out there until I can't anymore. With luck that ought to be more than a few years.

I thought it an appropo avatar since my neighbors in MY community already know me to be the man with the modern day "pike" standing watch on their street. Even LAPD Air Units know my profile. So the avatar.
So, was I right?

OT rant: I would like to toss all 3 of my supervisors and their manager out the door. I bid on a different position in a different department(more money) and they refuse to let me go because "I am to valuable."
"Okay", says I, then make it worth my while to stay.
They replied, we can let you go at any time.
"Then I must not be as valuable as you say so how about letting be go to the other department."
Cannot do that, says they. And then they walk off.

* Francis Covers the Big Town (1953)
* Francis Joins the WACS (1954)

No all movies.
The seventh and final entry in the series, Francis in the Haunted House, was made without any of the key creative personnel. Leonard Maltin, in most editions of his Movie Guide, says O'Connor quit, quoting the actor, "When you've made six pictures and the mule still gets more fan mail than you do...."

Ok so here's some shameless advice seeking, but since y'all seem to very level headed people it seems to be a good place to look for it. My brother is back from South Korea on leave. He is in the Army and has been married for roughly a year and a half. He is twenty one and his wife is thirty six. She has been cheating on him for six months and he found this out the day he got back. He has been mulling over divorce for the last few days and can't make a definitive decision. I normally would suggest counseling and what not to him, but she is a very mean and self-centered person. She treats him very badly (hence the cheating), and I would like to be able to tip the scale for him, but don't want to seem bias or pit him against me.
P.S. I know it's a lot to ask from a group that I have just recently met, but time is limited and I have been a lurker for so long sometimes I am more emboldened than I should be.
Thank you

Watch for Ignatieff to be anointed by Liberal caucus and the party executive by today or tomorrow.

I heard my wife crying in the bathroom. 'Honey? What's wrong' I asked.
'Oh, George! Just look at me: I'm getting so old! I have more gray in my hair than blonde, I have varicose veins on both of my legs, and I'm just fat and wrinkled all over! I really need someone to say something positive about me right now!'
I looked deeply into her eyes and said softly: 'Your vision's real good, honey. That's something, isn't it?'

re: #321 WestTexas
Good morning, Lizards.
{West Texas}:
1. Suggest that, no matter what, your brother consult a lawyer to protect his interests. He can file for divorce now and decide later not to finalize it. I think a separation would be a good idea so that they can reassess their goals.
2. Do they BOTH want to save the marriage? If so, they BOTH commit to that one goal and do EVERYTHING to work towards that, including counseling. If not, and I'm afraid from what you described, she may not, tell him to let go now.
3. Is it absolutely true that she cheated? I have grave concerns over a wife of less than a year behaving as she has, but if there's any possibility that this accusation is NOT true, it would be awful to make decisions based on a rumor.
May I add him to the Prayer List?

With that much dishonesty and disrespect in his marriage, your brother needs someone to be honest with him, but be gentle, because I'm sure he also needs to feel he's loved.
I would tell him that you love him, he's worthy of being loved and respected, and that a professional counselor will be able to help cut through the fog so he can make good decisions for himself.

Considering the age difference, no kids, and that he is being put at risk for STD's-I'd say tell him to think real carefully on it. Tell him all the Pro and Con that you see in the relationship, and support him until he decides. But he needs to decide before he reports back to duty, so he can get things started if he elects divorce.

Having been a military spouse for 20 years, I can tell you that I have seen situations like this before. Women who specifically seek out and marry someone in the military, knowing that they leave for long periods of time but still send the money home.
Your brother needs to go to base legal ASAP--it won't be anything they haven't seen before and they can tell him how to protect his interests. He also needs to notify his command element about his issues at home--they don't want someone in a dangerous duty situation when their mind is somewhere else. There are ways to give him a "time out" to deal with this, but he's got to let someone know--in the Air Force it would be his "First Shirt"--I don't know what the army equivalent is.
Don't let him blow this off or talk himself out of it--it's important that he take some steps to protect himself. What if she ruins his credit or gets pregnant with a baby that she passes off as his?

Get him out of there, and into some counseling. A good counselor will be able to not only help him sort things out now, but should be able to give him the tools to sort things out for himself in the future.

re: #321 WestTexas
Thank you
I don't mean to bash women because I do love them, but this is why I will never get married. Women terrify me.

AHHHHHH! Now I get it.
My EH made the choice to throw away commitments for selfish pleasure. I did what I felt I had to do to save our marriage, so now I have no regrets and the satisfaction of knowing that I tried everything.
I still have the court order preventing him from contacting me. Best thing EVER.

Yeah, we (the family) have been worried about that. He has already closed their joint account, so that's one step in the right direction. Our uncle is a civil lawyer and we have had talks already. So far so good, but he started back tracking yesterday.

I haven't done a lot of commenting lately and I missed the most recent birth certificate threads. I have to say I didn't really agree with the article by David Horowitz that Charles posted. Maybe the birth certificate controversy is crap, and I haven't been pushing it myself either online or person-to-person, but I don't agree with Horowitz that it's "sore loserism," since the controversy arose BEFORE Obama won the election. Perhaps it's a desperate effort to prevent Obama from becoming President, but it can't logically be called "sore loserism" unless it started AFTER the Republican loss.
Would Horowitz have had the claimants drop their suits immediately after Obama won? Well, that would pretty much reveal the suits to be nothing more than a ploy to try to prevent Obama's election, wouldn't it? It would reveal the claimants as hypocrites who never believed there was any merit to their suit, as people no better than Dan Rather and Mary Mapes. Some of the claimants may be crackpots, but I think they really do believe they're doing the right thing and that they shouldn't stop and cede the issue just because Obama won (because even a President-elect shouldn't be above the Constitution).
Then there is the claim that getting Obama disqualified on this basis would "disenfranchise" 64 million voters. But if Obama really is NOT a citizen, and knows it, and lied about it, and the voters had known this BEFORE the election, would they have voted for him?
Again, I'm not trying to push the birth certificate issue itself--I tend to think there's probably nothing to it (although I haven't entirely passed judgment on it, either)--but I do disagree with a couple of the criticisms Horowitz levels at it and those who promote it.

Well from what I know she was married once before years ago. She has a sixteen year old from the marriage. He lives with them. It's pretty twisted. The marriage was a rather short one.
I hate to add to your discomfort but, my alarms have gradually been going off. Your brother needs to get far away from this woman, and he needs to watch his back. Seriously.

As he is military, Ma'm, seeing a shrink 'on record' tends to blot any career prospects. That is why I suggested seeing the Chaplain at the nearest Post. The Chaplain can help, and probably steer him into programs that aren't run by the Psychiatric types in the Base hospital.

Would you ask your uncle to give him the names of a few divorce attorneys who will do initial consults for free or for a reduced rate? Your brother needs to find out his legal rights and responsibilities, ASAP.

I suspect this woman has played this game before--she chose your brother because he's so young and doesn't have the "tools" to fight back. He thinks they're in love and everything will work out. Everything from her side absolutely SCREAMS "black widow". I hope you can make him see that he's a pawn in her game. You can't push too hard, or he'll run toward her. He really, really needs to go to base legal--it's free and confidential.

Freud would've seen that coming from 100 miles away! Poor kid.
It's not unheard of for someone like her to get a credit card and rack up the debts then dump them on him. No matter what the final divorce order would say about the debts, the creditors would go after the other spouse, especially on in the military because they know that the military does not tolerate bad debtors no matter who racked up the charges.
