ABC News is reporting that the person who offered Illinois Governor Blagojevich up to $1 million for Barack Obama’s Senate seat is Jesse Jackson Jr.

Chicago Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., is the anonymous “Senate Candidate No. 5” whose emissaries Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich reportedly offered up to $1 million to name him to the U.S. Senate, federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

According to the FBI affidavit in the case, Blagojevich “stated he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided Rod Blagojevich” with something “tangible up front.”

Jackson said this morning he was contacted Tuesday by federal prosecutors in Chicago whom he said “asked me to come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.”

Jackson said, “I don’t know” when asked whether he was Candidate No. 5, but said he was told “I am not a target of this investigation.”

He's not a target of the investigation? That's going to change pretty quick, and it looks like his stupidity and arrogance is exceeded only by that of Blagojavich himself. No wonder he's lawyered up.

Jackson, who has expressed interest in being appointed to the post, told ABC News that he did not authorize anyone to make payments or promises on his behalf to the governor, and he is going to meet with federal prosecutors "as quickly as possible" after consulting with lawyers.

"It is impossible for someone on my behalf to have a conversation that would suggest any type of quid pro quo or any payments or offers," Jackson told ABC News. "An impossibility to an absolute certainty."

And yet, he's not denying that he's #5? Something has got to give here, and I bet it's going to be Jackson.

Thank you, Chicago! Not only is Chicago one of the coolest and best cities in the world to visit, it is also home of one-of-a-kind over the top corruption. I will be enjoy watching Mr. Fitzgerald peel back the woodwork and be amazed by what is found! This will make the long cold winter oh-so-warm!

Jesse Jackson Jr.

He served as a national co-chairman of the Barack Obama presidential campaign. Jackson has been mentioned as a possible appointee by Governor Rod Blagojevich for an interim United States Senator to replace Obama until the November 2010 election.

Jackson has a lengthy relationship with Barack Obama. Barack's Illinois State Senate 13th district that he served from January 8, 1997–November 4, 2004 was within Jackson's Congressional district. The two have collaborated on issues, stood together against the party slate on certain reform-minded candidates and sought each other’s advice.

Additionally, Jackson's sister Santita was a close friend of Michelle Obama and served as a bridesmaid at the Obama wedding.

I love how this story is breaking 4 weeks after the election. Even someone at the FBI could have leaked this to the press, but even they knew their jobs would be suspect if they were to embarrass the Messiah before his coronation. How in hell and who was paid to keep this story quiet? That's the real story, for had this toilet seat been hung around Obama's neck in October, we may have had a very different election outcome. Did the DNC pay off the FBI to keep quiet?, the media? or both?

A senator could send quite a nice chunk of change to his or her cronies up and down the state. It's quite profitable for everyone.

Here, we have a Member of Parliament who received leaked information from the Home Office and embarrassed teh government with questions based on that information being arrested and held for nine hours, his offices and home ransacked by twelkve anti-terrorist police officers, his teenage daughter in tears - and his office in Parliament also ransacked, computer, blackberry, everything taken so he can't do his job.

Gawd - you have real villains in public office, trying to sell and/or buy a seat as a senator for a million bucks, and one of them is asked to kindly go and see the police about it.

Wanna learn from us?

Well, we might get a "dialogue on race," Chicago style--just not the "dialogue" that the President-elect wanted.

Not so fast...

December 15, 2008

* Meetings of Electors and Transmission of Certificates of Vote to NARA
The electors meet in their State to select the President and Vice President of the United States. No Constitutional provision or Federal law requires electors to vote in accordance with the popular vote in their States. NARA's web site lists the States that have laws to bind electors to candidates. The electors record their votes on six "Certificates of Vote," which are paired with the six remaining Certificates of Ascertainment. The electors sign, seal and certify packages of electoral votes and immediately send one set of votes to the President of the Senate and two sets to the Archivist. The Federal Register preserves one archival set and holds the reserve set subject to the call of the President of the Senate to replace missing or incomplete electoral votes.

December 24, 2008

* Deadline for Receipt of Electoral Votes at NARA

The President of the Senate and the Archivist should have the electoral votes in hand by December 24, 2008 (States face no legal penalty for failure to comply). If votes are lost or delayed, the Archivist may take extraordinary measures to retrieve duplicate originals.

Today appears to be December 10, 2008...hmmm?

With the arrest of Governor Blagojevich this morning, it becomes clear that Tony Rezko played a significant role in putting him in jail. Rezko's name appears 170 times in the criminal complaint against Blagojevich and Harris, and the FBI states early on (page 11) that he was cooperating with the investigation. At the same time, the FBI is apparently uncertain about just how reliable Rezko is:

Some out-takes;...

According to the affidavit, Blagojevich threatened to appoint Senate Candidate No. 5 if President-elect Obama refused to help get his wife on "paid corporate boards right now."

"If they feel like they can do this and not f-- give me anything then I'll f-- go [Senate Candidate 5]."

There are strong indications that Candidate 1 may be Valerie Jarrett, Obama's close confidante who has since been named a special presidential adviser. Senate Candidate 1 is identified in the federal documents as an adviser to the president-elect.

It looks like a lolly scramble to me. BHO wants Blagojevich to appoint #1, Blagojevich says "if you dont give my wife a cushy number I will take the dosh and appoint #5"

Blagojevich is doomed to be the scapgoat, here, but there is smelly shit stuck on more than just his face. It from top to bottom. Send in the cleaners.

I grew up in Chicago and I don't remember an aura of stench. An aura of machine politics certainly but I think it's fair to say that Chicago had a reputation as being a city that 'worked'. Of course its been controlled by the Daley's all my life.
I would venture a guess and say that what we're seeing here is likely to be evident in all large urban centers and not just exclusive to Chicago. It's just their turn under the microscope. Not excusing it, just beyond my brainpower to figure it out...maybe the dynamics of too many rats in the cage...

Maybe in this case they are focusing on Blago, the top guy, for numerous things, not just this one.

And, actually - is it illegal for a politician to help another politician in fund-raising efforts?

So whatever Jackson did might be sort of on the edge of what is illegal and so they want to focus efforts on Blago.

Also, as someone indicated above - they could start a separate investigation of Jackson, if he is not a "target" of this one.

It's a union thing - merit plays no part in advancement hence it is all political - and the people reek of desperation - living in a place like chicago.

Look at Detroit, look at Philly, look at New Jersey, look at New York - lots of aggrieved people with an entitlement mentality - and these are very old political areas.

A radio host asked why certain states are always so corrupt. Clearly the unions play a massive role - and then once people are accustomed to collective bargaining that eschews advancement based on merit - it becomes a political cesspool.

The most corrupt places - Chicago, Washington D.C., Illinois, Louisiana - do not have competing political parties.

Wanna learn from us?

re: #116 MandyManners

How did Chicago become this corrupt? When did it start? Has anyone tried to root it out?

The roots of the modern machine are in the Outfit of the 1920s and the neighborhoods of the working class Irish neighborhoods such as Bridgeport. (These folks were referred to as "Pig Shit" Irish by others.) The first modern Machine mayor elected was Anton Cermak. Every mayor since then has been part of the Democratic Machine with the exception of Harold Washington.

Cermak campaigned as a reformer (sound familiar) against "Big Bill" Thompson (R). Cermak created a political army to combat the "Lace Curtain" Irish who at the time controlled the Democratic Party. His coalition included many different ethnic groups across Chicago.

Following Cermak's assassination and the temporary mayoralship of Frank Corr, came Edward Kelly

Kelly maintained the machine Cermak had built along with Patrick Nash. Nash was the head of the machine at the time, head of the Party. Together, Kelly and Nash kept the machine going, and kept the inclusiveness that Cermak had started. Over time, the machine thought Kelly to be to corrupt to be mayor.

In 1947, the machine dumped Kelly and put the "reformer" Martin Kennelly in his place. Another "reformer" who was lock, stock, and barrel a machine man. By this time, the machine had grown storng enough to live on its own and become the kingmaker. In 1955, they could no longer control Kennelly, so they chose a new mayor, someone they thought they could control, but would wind up controlling them.

Richard J. Daley became mayor in 1955, at the behest of the machine. Under Daley, the machine was maintained and solidified. However, it became so associated with him, that it started to run aground in the late 1970s, after his death in office.

After Daley's death, Michael Bilandic became mayor. He was nowhere as capable of the position as Daley, and it was proven during the terrible winter of 1978-79. It was then that the machine started to show cracks as it was challenged first from within, then from without.

Jane Byrne defeated Bilandic in 1979. She had formerly been part of Daley's machine, and passed over by the machine bosses who took over after Daley's death. She was subsequently defeated by Harold Washington, the first non-Democratic Machine mayor since Thompson (even though Washington was a Democrat).

Washington was elected by three groups, Blacks on the South and West Sides (who historically voted differently), and the Lakefront "Good Government" Liberals. The result was four years of Council Wars After Washington's death, David Orr was interm mayor, followed by Eugene Sawyer.

Sawyer was elected by a coaltion, but not really a machine. However, the machine was making a comeback, and in 1989, they put Richard M. Daley, Richard J.'s son up for mayor. It has since become as much his machine as it was his father's before him.

So which fish are you suspecting they want. . .?

Hillbuzz (who is on my list of bloggers to be highly skeptical of) had theorized before the election that Rezko's singing was to go after Blago, and that Blago would be used to go after the One himself. Well- Hillbuzz got quite a few things wrong about the election, and there was a few things over there that caused my little Smurf eyebrow to rise like a Vulcan, but this theory is actually playing out now.

Will Blago be willing to sing to get out of this mess he's in? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of 'All My Corrupt Chicago Politicians'.

Chicago's had a bunch of "reformers" in its history who have been anything but reform-minded. I've been following the history of the modern machine and trying to figure out who is solid in it, who is outside of it, and who freelances.

In the current problems with the governor, Blago was a part of it, and tried to freelance. Emanuel's always been a freelancer. Quinn's outside of it. Jackson Jr. is part of it, along with Obama. What's interesting is how they have gotten some of the Republicans on their side to create the Combine. With that, it's all about protecting their political positions.

So far, it looks a lot like a coverup for a coverup (probably involving some coverup).

A non-coverup would have let things run their course, and then stepped on the whole dishonest pile.
This whole thing smacks of something that will expose the "unpopular" perpetrators, and amazingly enough, not discover the depth of anything.

I could go with that. Whenever something looks too good to be true . . .

Obama Calls for Governor Under Siege to Step Down

CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday called for the resignation of Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich, the besieged governor of Illinois whose political fortunes slammed to earth a day after he was arrested and accused of putting Mr. Obama’s former United States Senate seat up for auction.

Robert Gibbs, a spokesman for Mr. Obama, said the charges against Mr. Blagojevich had made his leadership virtually untenable.

re: #424 DisturbedEma

so musings. . .different from assumptions on your home planet? If I post that Cog is a fatuous ass, is it musing, assumption, or fact and how would you tell the difference?

I could EXPLAIN my comment- I THINK he is a fatuous ass because he posts things, people inquire, well, in my case, I mock him, to be honest, I cannot stand him, so I am clearly ASSUMING he is an asshole, fatuous in nature because of my interaction with him.

He may very well be said fatuous ass. . .or not. . .if I posted that would you not want more information? and if you asked for it and I said 'show me where you see me assuming he is an ass" and you quoted my post, and I starting implying you were stupid for asking. . .would I not be, by all appearences, avoiding the initial question and start attacking you?

Just wondering. . .and no, I did not touch your karma. . .

Well, I didn't quite follow all of that.
He may very well be an asshole and a fatuous ass, and I've seen him be that way at times.
I just didn't think this was one of those times.

And in my little section of the planet, an assumption is different from a musing:

When doing some preparation for The Wedding, I came across this statement of a Jewish sage and found it to be fitting to this discussion:

In Ethics of our Fathers,1 Rabbi Yochanan asked of his five top students: "Go and see which is the best trait for a person to acquire." One of the students, Rabbi Yossi, felt that the most important "trait" for a person to acquire is a "good neighbor." Maimonides writes:2 "It is human nature that one's views and actions follow those of his acquaintances and fellows, and to behave like his fellow citizens. Therefore one must associate with righteous people..."

I understand it just fine, you do not understand the term assumption I think. . .
from M/W

Let's see assumption;
1 a: the taking up of a person into heaven bcapitalized : August 15 observed in commemoration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Nope

2: a taking to or upon oneself

Hmmm
3: the act of laying claim to or taking possession of something

Hmmm

4: arrogance , pretension

Ohhh

5 a: an assuming that something is true b: a fact or statement (as a proposition, axiom, postulate, or notion) taken for granted

We have a winner- if you could explain how your position on Jr. is not in keeping with this. . .you said it but you did not mean it. . .

6: the taking over of another's debts

Duckworth comments on consideration for Senate

By Alexis Hunt
Saturday, November 08, 2008 at 9:48 p.m.

QUINCY, IL -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

Obama met with Governor Rod Blagojevich earlier this week to discuss it. Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement. There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Junior to Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.

Duckworth made an appearance in Saturday's Veterans' parade in Quincy. We asked her about the possibility of filling Obama's seat.

"The Governor's office confirmed yesterday that he is considering me and I am deeply honored jus to be considered. I hope whoever is selected is someone who is willing to travel around the state and gets to know this wonderful state. I'm just honored to be considered," Duckworth said.

The governor expects to make his decision before Christmas. Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

I noticed that in the last couple of hours all the Democratic honchos are calling for Blagojevich to resign or in the case of Harry Reid, not to appoint anyone..."or else"... It seems to me that the Democrates biggest worry now is that this will get tossed to the Illinois legislature which in turn can call for a special election which in turn could lead to...gasp...a Republican getting the seat. So expect huge pressure for Blago to resign and let the Lt Governer appoint.

567 karmic_inquisitor  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 1:34:56pm

The problem here is that Obama comes from a political cesspool. Many here have known that about Chicago, but now the world knows.

So what is fair to ask about Barack Obama? Before answering that, consider that Obama ran a campaign that constantly stifled criticism and critical speculation by trying to challenge the motivations of the critic/potential critic. By likening any attack to "swiftboating" and "distraction" he was able to get the media to examine those who asked tough questions. Joe the Plumber is not only an example, but demonstrated how far the press was willing to go in terms of investigating Obama's critics.

In light of that context, "what is fair to ask" is really what is at issue right now. Obama has coasted on goodwill for several years now. He has not been required to support his assertions of competence, ability and honesty. Instead, his critics have been challenged in each of those areas.

Will this be allowed to continue for 4 years? Will Obama be above substantive criticism? Will he not be required to answer basic questions? Like:

Did you ever witness corruption in Illinois politics? If so, when? Did you report it? What did you do to fight it?

If not, were you even aware of corruption in Illinois politics? If you were, what did you do to fight it? If not, were you paying attention? Can you rightly claim you have good political judgment (which you repeatedly have) if you were unaware of corruption of this scale?

And turning to the specific facts of the Senatorial succession - Blagojovich is quoted as saying that your people would only pay in gratitude for your pick. Why didn't you report Blagojavich's request for a bribe? Why didn't that prompt you, as our next President, to go on the offensive against political corruption rather than simply not participate?

So, I don't get it. Is this anything unusual or unexpected from Chicago politics?LMAO
I see the 'Liars Club' is growing as we type...now we can add Mr. Axelrod/Axlerod to the lying crew...
Now, O is asking for the Gov to resign which sounds like a thinly veiled or timely controlled threat from the office of the president elect...or at least a volley across the Gov's deck to ensure that the Gov just 'shuts up!' Amazing how very quickly he throws a fellow Dem under the bus. Does anyone recall how long it took O to minimally fess-up to Rev Wright? His rush to judge here is a tad premature from someone who has no involvement in this mess and who has consistently dragged his feet on other similar matters of import, eh?
Now, I see the usual culpable conspiratorial suspects known as the MSM (Mainstream Shame Media) are trying to kill the story and stop the spread from Illinois to Washington, DC.

So Ben Stein's judgment takes another hit. I think it's fair to say 0bama is the most corrupt President-elect ever. I would like Cog to name a President this scandal ridden before even taking the oath of office.

Nixon 1972...? or are we only counting first-termers? If so then we have to disregard "Landslide" Lyndon Johnson 1964 too.

Agreed that Obama 2008 was involved in far worse than, say, Carter 1976 or Clinton 1992.

Some might count Iran-Contra. I don't mind supporting the Contras so much; but funding them through arms sales to Khomeini was... bad. I say that Bush 1988 came in under a very dark cloud.

The Electoral College will vote him such. It's peopled by hacks. A lot of them are actual officeholders in this or that party. For them to drop The One, they'd have to gin up almost a hundred Faithless among the Dem caucus. That's not happening unless the Democratic leadership orders their Electors to vote for, say, Nader or Clinton. And that's not happening unless O gets arrested, or drops a big stinking steamer on Pelosi's desk, or becomes incapacitated in some irreversible way (like, oh, William Henry Harrison, but before the vote; p.s. I do not want this to happen).
