Jesse Jackson Jr. Press Conference

Jesse Jackson Jr. is holding a press conference right now; here’s a liveblogging thread…

“I reject and denounce pay to play politics… I did not initiate or authorize anyone at any time, etc.”

UPDATE at 12/10/08 1:37:37 pm:

Over in a flash! No questions from the media, just a story about his little sister, some self-aggrandizement, and then a little Martin Luther King to finish up:

Somewhere along the way over the last two and a half years I got the idea that if a skinny kid with a funny name could be President of the United States, then a short kid with a somewhat controversial but certainly a high profile name could be a Senator from Illinois. I entered this process with that expectation, and I hope that the people of the state of Illinois and the people of our country will measure me based on the content of my character.

2 Creeping Eruption  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 1:23:14pm

Did he bring his own shovel to the press-conference or did they provide one for him?

I think we're going to need this.

4 Honorary Yooper  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 1:23:31pm

Anyone got a big enough shovel? I can smell this crap though my radio.

"i reject and denounce..."
"i never sent a message or an emissary to make an offer, plead my case, or propose a deal..."
etc. etc. etc.

Flat out denial.

102 Sunlight  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 1:36:52pm

I'm actually admiring the feds breaking up some of these "pay to play" (official policy in some blue states) operations. However, I'm wondering what type of pressure they must be under because they seem to blow the whistle, stop the play, arrest people, make plea agreements, etc. before the whole scam is uncovered. I feel like they know that the public has an inkling that there is massive corruption in some states, so they are throwing us a fish while trying to survive the blowback from the people involved... I think there is lots more and it goes really high as the state people move to D.C. and track their slime into the capitol.

One term president

Bob Beckel was on Fox this morning and stated the biggest problem was likely to be the public's view of the Chicago machinery, which would affect the Democratic party, and would ripple up to the president.

I seldom agree with Beckel, but I think he's got this right. Things wouldn't be so bad except Reid and Pelosi's actions will now get magnified. Within four years (maybe by the next midterm!) Democrats will join -- not replace, join -- Republicans in the "corrupt" column.

It will be an interesting set of elections. Bull Moose party, anyone?

They are. Madiagn's called back the House for Monday next week, and Jones will call back the Senate after that. They need to make it veto-proof if Blago is still governor. If Quinn's the governor by then, they won't have to worry about it being passed. Quinn has stated he will sign such a bill.

This is sad, pathetic.

The nation's great institutions are in desperate need of men and women with integrity.

I wish this story would just go away. It's quite enough that every preminent Wall Street investment banking house has either collapsed or has re-chartered. Quite enough that America's largest industrial manufacturers are virtually bankrupt. And it's quite enough that American's are being thrown out of their homes and jobs in record numbers.

We need some leadership, statesmanship and integrity.

When do we get it?

One of them (I can't remember which) said that regular political horse-trading was not criminal. It became criminal when the participants used it for personal gain.

Come on, seriously, JJ, Jr. and family are royalty in Chicago politics and perfectly bullet-proof just like the new big O (sitting on the dock of the pay) is nationwide.

...waiting anxiously for the Gov to retrun the favor and state that the president elect should resign...since, O was probably to get his cut from the deal in some fashion...what else would two crooked Chicago politicians discuss about the impending appoinment and those will to pay to play at least a million for the gig...and that was probably the opening bid...who knows, O and the Gov may have become a little richer in a hurry on this rather small potatos joint venture.

Let's hear the tapes, Feds. I can't wait for these things to get leaked.

Leaks won't be necessary. They'll be introduced as evidence, and enter the public record at that point, even if a plea bargain is struck. It may take a FOIA request to get them, but in good time - and a fairly short time - all that information will be released.

Don't forget, too, that this investigation is certainly not over. Anyone who solicited bribes is also going to be looked at very closely. This current chapter is a follow-on to the Rezko conviction, aided by Rezko's plea deal to testify on corruption he took part in.

There are a minimum of four additional 'Senate Candidates' as yet unnamed. They will be just as high profile, quite possibly more so, than Jesse Junior.

What they actually said will be fascinating to hear. The main questions are: Did they actively solicit the Senate seat with the promise of some sort of kickback? If a payment was solicited, did they actively embrace the idea? Did it never come up at all? Or was Blago the sole instigator, who never got any bites?

It will be an interesting couple of months. Remember, too, that the Senate seat is only one of the issues here. There's a whole host of dealings with union representatives, manufacturers, other politicians and on and on.

And that's only what's become known since October. This guy's been in his current office for six years.

I'm gonna go order a case of popcorn.

No, they know exactly who they are. Many of those involved have been actively cooperating in the investigation.

The names are doctored to protect the players, and also to protect the investigation itself, which is ongoing and probably just getting started.

Meanwhile, in Boston we have our little corruption drama playing out.

Turner, Wilkerson plead not guilty to extort charges

There was no awkward display of solidarity at the federal courthouse today, but former state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson and City Councilor Charles “Chuck” Turner could not avoid standing feet apart as accused co-conspirators in a political-muscle-for-hire scandal.

Before an overflow crowd of some 120 supporters, many wearing “We Stand With Chuck” stickers, Turner, 68, and Wilkerson, 53, both of Roxbury, pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court to conspiracy and attempted extortion indictments that could put them in prison for dozens of years if they’re convicted.

The suspect stateswoman and the bearded Turner are alleged to have pocketed bribe money last year - Wilkerson, $23,500, and Turner, $1,000 - to help a proposed nightclub in their district secure a liquor license.

Hey, buzz -- have you already done a send up of Big Rock Candy Mountain for Hopenchange? Would you?

How is this?

HopeChange Revolution

(sung to “Big Rock Candy Mountain”)

One evening as the sun went down and the prairie fire was burning
Down the track came a candidate and he said boys I'm not turning
I'm headin for a land that's far away beside the foggy bottom
So come with me we'll go and see the HopeChange Revolution

In the HopeChange Revolution there's a land that's fair and bright
Where the bailouts grow on bushes and the Army doesn’t fight
Where the busses are all empty cause the people ride beneath
With the preachers please, there’s no cigarettes please
Where the donations spring with anonymous bling
In the HopeChange Revolution

In the HopeChange Revolution all the mortgages get paid
And the bankers all write rubber checks and the taxpayers get played
The minivans get built for free and their tanks are full of gas
Oh, the MSM gives me a pass
The investigations never last
In the HopeChange Revolution

In the HopeChange revolution your ballot is secure
And if you don’t have enough right now we’ll always find some more
The senate and the house are ours without dissenting blocks
We’ve got some real bipartisanship oppositions on the rocks
Now with our RINO pals there will be no veto stops
In the HopeChange Revolution

I actually don't want them to focus on the people from governor down. I want them to look from governor up to the House, Senate, Office of the President Elect... But by blowing it open in public, they divert attention and allow all the people above to cover their tracks. It happened in New Mexico recently also.

I seriously doubt it goes anywhere beyond Blago. He gets to appoint Obama's replacement, he tried to cash in on it - like he does on everything else, apparently. It's hard for me to see where it could possibly go higher.

Time will tell.

Meanwhile, I don't like leaks, period. In a case like this, they can potentially damage prosecutions and hinder further investigation, which is obviously taking place.

And - be careful what you wish for. An Obama entanglement that leads to his ouster as President puts Retarded Joe Biden in charge of the country, who is in an ongoing battle with Al Gore to see who has more stupid.

Frankly, I'd rather win at the ballot box, by fielding a better candidate.

I thought one part of the press conference yesterday with Fitz and the FBI guy was interesting.

One of them (I can't remember which) said that regular political horse-trading was not criminal. It became criminal when the participants used it for personal gain.

I think it's interesting that the Justice Dept knows the differnence, but the politicans do not.

Personal gain isn't even it. If you get what you want and I get something out of it that's just political horse trading. But when I get personal , direct financial gain then it becomes corruption.

Ah, KHQA. Should've got yer facts straight.

KHQA TV wishes to offer clarification regarding a story that appeared last month on our website ConnectTristates.com. The story, which discussed the appointment of a replacement for President Elect Obama’in the U.S. Senate, became the subject of much discussion on talk radio and on blog sites Wednesday.

The story housed in our website archive was on the morning of November 5, 2008. It suggested that a meeting was scheduled later that day between President Elect Obama and Illinois Governor Blagojevich. KHQA has no knowledge that any meeting ever took place. Then that would mean he didn't want to go after the person appointed, wouldn't it? Something fishy with the timing, it's almost like Fitz didn't want any body's tit to get caught in the wringer.

If you've never heard the story about Jesse Sr.'s raise to fame following MLK's assisination, the attached link is worth a read.

Unmasking Jesse Jackson

The guy has been a corrupt showman since the beginning.

Relevant cut and paste below:

Specifically, Jackson claimed that he was on the balcony with King immediately after the latter had been mortally wounded by an assassin’s bullet on April 4, 1968, and that he had cradled the dying civil rights leader in his arms as he took his final breaths. At the moment King was shot, Jackson was actually in a nearby parking lot talking to a group of musicians. Kenneth Timmerman describes what happened next: “When the shots rang out, he [Jackson] fled and hid behind the swimming pool area and reappeared 20-30 minutes later when the television cameras arrived on the scene. That’s when Jesse Jackson told other Southern Christian Leadership Conference staffers, ‘Don’t you talk to the press, whatever you do.’ ... Nobody had given him that job. He took that job. Call it ‘entrepreneurial instinct’ if you wish, but on the spot he realized that he had an opportunity to spin the events to create his own persona and create a possibility for him to become a leader in the black movement. He had no prospects at that point.”

The next morning, Jackson flew to Chicago to make a guest appearance on the NBC “Today Show.” In the few hours that had passed between the King assassination and Jackson’s flight to the Windy City, Jackson had already hired a public relations agent to accompany him as he was transported from interview to interview in a chauffeur-driven car. Before a national television audience on the “Today” show, Jackson donned a shirt that he claimed was smeared with the dying Dr. King’s blood. “He died in my arms,” lied Jackson.

Tattoos are cool!

In 2006 I decided that I would get the whole of my scalp completely covered. The most difficult aspect about this was that I had to have the whole my head completely shaved. When Paul set about tattooing the head I left the choice of subject to him but when I found that he was tattooing
penises all over the back of the head I couldn’t believe it at first but I must admit I loved the work and asked him to continued with this theme over the whole head.

NO! NO! NO! You don't turn the other way! That way is chaos. We are a nation of laws, and we have seen what happens when they are ignored.

Is this indiscretion worth the potential downside? For example I think it was a waste of time and damaging to the GOP to try and impeach Clinton, we should have turned the other way.

Good feedback all, thanks. Time to go walk the lab along the American. I'll come back in the AM and check for down dings. Ha!

One of the dumbest songs in the world, since there is no "east side" of Chicago, unless you are talking about the lake.

Actually, there is a neighborhood called "East Side" down on the southeast side, near Hammond. It's east of Lake Calumet, and next to the Skyway.

Blagojevich said that he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided Blagojevich with something “tangible up front.” Fitzgerald stopped the investigation before Blagojevich actually got anything. What is he charged with? Attempted bribery? Soliciting a bribe? Jesse Jr. was supposed to put up something tangible real soon, before Blagojevich was going to appoint anyone, way before Obama was to be sworn in. Why didn't he wait to see how this played out? He kept the Plame case open long after he knew who the leaker was.

And I didn't say you said anything about suppressing evidence. What you have said is 0bama shouldn't be prevented from taking office. Well- if evidence were presented that he's broken the law, then the rule of law should be upheld, regardless of the market or threat of violence.

For the record, I don't think this scandal is going to prevent 0bama from taking office, but I am going to defend the rule of law and the Constitution. Should there be evidence that warrants an indictment, then the rule of law should be followed.

Well I didn't see the story, and since they've removed it . . .
I only have their word for it in their "clarification" that the story merely "suggested" that a meeting would take place.

I would assume that this moot point would turn on

1. Do we consider a teleconference a "meeting"

2. How many degrees of seperation between the two will negate the meeting-

My assumption, based on the wording of the now pulled article is that dear leader and Blag met. . .but Blag went to dear leader, of course without the now pulled details, I cannot check it, but hey, people have been elected president with less fact checking. . .but I digress. . .hence the lack of fanfare. . . barring any information to the contrary, I am going with that- they did meet, and now dear leader is trying to put the genie back in the bottle. . .Mr. Hands on leadership has 2 unsavory options. . .

1. State he had no idea that his underling, acting in his stead, messed up and throw said aide underling under the bus. . .

or

2. Admit to meeting- and say the usual not the Blag I knew. . .

Both have worked in the past. . .

re: #423 WrathofG-d

In this link they state the name of the Israeli city as "Petah Tikwa"...only problem is...(a) there is no town in Hebrew of that name, and (b) there is no "W" sound in Hebrew.

They are trying to point out the city, I believe of Petah TikVah, as it is said in Hebrew. I must assume then that Petah TikWa is an arab pronunciation.

Any thoughts?

I don't know what the Arabic pronunciation is, but I do know that the letter "w" stands for the v sound in some European languages -- in German, for example.

So if you had an Israeli news editor whose native language was Hebrew but who had also studied both German and English, it would be quite natural and unsurprising if this person sometimes got mixed up and spelled Hebrew words "German style" in an English news story, or vice-versa.

On the other hand, here's the Arabic wiki article about Petah Tikvah, which I found by a link from the English wiki entry.

Although I don't know Arabic, I am familiar with the alphabet, and the Arabic spelling of the city -- omitting the short vowels, since they aren't written in Arabic -- is btāh tkfā. (The Arabic alphabet has no letter "p", so they use a "b" to represent this sound in spelling non-Arabic words.)

A slightly different Arabic spelling is used over the picture of the city's emblem at the left side of the page: bītāh tkfā, with the "e" in "Petah" being treated as a long vowel ī in Arabic. But in both spellings, you can see that the "v" in Tikvah is represented with the Arabic "f," rather than the Arabic "w".

I want to append this, although it may have been covered in this discussion.

I'm less concerned about whether or not Obama was involved (I doubt it) in pay for play than what should be a central issue for Obama in this scandal:

Was Obama aware that the Governor was dirty and did he conceal it? No less than the full and immediate disclosure of all communications with the governor's office should be demanded and provided promptly.

It may not voilate law to conceal dirty politicians, but if Obama knew this guy was dirty and failed to blow the whistle, then there's not a chance on the moon that he can be trusted in office to protect us against corruption and "politics as usual". The central issue for Obama is character and honesty, not whether or not he is necessarily guilty of a crime.

Fess up, Obama. Open your records to scrutiny, or your presidency will be inevitably be tainted from the very start.

I hope that the people of the state of Illinois and the people of our country will measure me based on the content of my character.

This is a just a cleverly calculated and deployed race card. It obfuscates the fact that it's the content of his character that's at issue, and aims instead for virtue by association on the basis of skin color.

Wouldn't expect anything less from a Jackson.
