$489,438.29. Damn, he sure lowered the price. ;-)> He wanted $500k from Jesse Jackson jr with more to follow.
The FBI says that during an Oct. 31 conversation, Blagojevich described an approach from an associate of Senate Candidate 5: "We were approached 'pay to play.' That, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him [Senate Candidate 5] a senator."

It's also kinda' fucking sad that our nation's power is being sold.
I guess that's what I was saying in comment #1 on this thread. And I think we are in for multiple rounds of this kind of scandal. Both from the right and the left.
And It's more than power that is being sold. Our nation is being sold. Sold to the lowest bidder. If we really valued what we have spent over 200 years in creating, then we would not sell out to 700 billion here or 30 billion there. That's the cheap way out.
No, if we really cared about our nation, we would get behind the problems the way we did when we needed to support each other during WWII.
If we really cared about our nation, we would find the energy we need and the new technologies that will free us from sucking up to a murderous theocratic political cult like we did when John F. Kennedy challenged us to make it to the moon.
If we really cared about our nation, we would return our attention to our children, and teach them the power of rugged individualism, the power that propelled so many Americans to obtain greatness in their lives.
If we really cared about our nation, we would... wait... I think American Idol is coming on... I'll be back later... sorry.

Meanwhile Joe Biden cut a deal with the outgoing Maryland Governor to stick a placeholder flunkie in his Senate seat who promises not to run in 2010 so that Biden's son who will return from active duty in Iraq by then can run for the open seat. Now Beau Biden might just be the most qualified person for that seat, I'm not trashing him at all. Its just that dad's open seat was filled to return a favor. Maybe no cash changed hands, but it might as well have.

3 EX-GOVERNORS SERVED TIMEThree former Illinois governors have gone to prison in the past 35 years:
• Otto Kerner, a Democrat who was governor from 1961 to 1968, served less than a year of a three year prison sentence after his conviction in 1973 on bribery, tax evasion and other counts. He was convicted of arranging favorable horse racing dates as governor in return for getting horse racing association stock at reduced prices. He died in 1976.
• Dan Walker, a Democrat in office from 1973 to 1977, served 1½ years of a seven-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 1987 to bank fraud, misapplication of funds and perjury. The charges were unrelated to service as governor.
• George Ryan, a Republican who was governor from 1999 to 2003, was convicted of corruption in 2006 for steering state contracts and leases to political insiders while he was Illinois secretary of State and then governor. He is serving a 6½-year prison term.

As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of pantyhose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty.
One year I decided to make his dream come true. I put on sunglasses and went in search of an inflatable love doll. They don't sell those things at Wal-Mart. I had to go to an adult bookstore downtown.
If you've never been in an X-rated store, don't go. You'll only confuse yourself. I was there an hour saying things like, "What does this do? You're kidding me! Who would buy that?" Finally, I made it to the inflatable doll section. I wanted to buy a standard, uncomplicated doll that could also substitute as a passenger in my truck so I could use the car pool lane during rush hour.
Finding what I wanted was difficult. Love Dolls come in many different models. The top of the line, according to the side of the box, could do things I'd only seen in a book on animal husbandry. I settled for Lovable Louise. She was at the bottom of the price scale.
To call Louise a doll took a huge leap of imagination. On Christmas Eve and with the help of an old bicycle pump, Louise came to life.
My sister-in-law was in on the plan and let me in during the wee morning hours. Long after Santa had come and gone, I filled the dangling pantyhose with Louise's pliant legs and bottom. I also ate some cookies and drank what remained of a glass of milk on a nearby tray. I went home, and giggled for a couple of hours.
The next morning my brother called to say that Santa had been to his house and left a present that had made him VERY happy but had left the dog confused. She would bark, start to walk away, then come back and bark some more.
We all agreed that Louise should remain in her pantyhose so the rest of the family could admire her when they came over for the traditional Christmas dinner.
My grandmother noticed Louise the moment she walked in the door. "What the hell is that?" she asked.
My brother quickly explained, "It's a doll."
"Who would play with something like that?" Granny snapped.
I had several candidates in mind, but kept my mouth shut.
"Where are her clothes?" Granny continued.
"Boy, that turkey sure smells nice Gran" Jay said, to steer her into the dining room.
But Granny was relentless. "Why doesn't she have any teeth?"
Again, I could have answered, but why would I? It was Christmas and no one wanted to ride in the back of the ambulance saying, "Hang on Granny, hang on!"
My grandfather, a delightful old man with poor eyesight, sidled up to me and said, "Hey, who's the naked gal by the fireplace?"
I told him she was Jay's friend.
A few minutes later I noticed Grandpa by the mantel, talking to Louise. Not just talking, but actually flirting. It was then that we realized this might be Grandpa's last Christmas at home.

The dinner went well. We made the usual small talk about who had died, who was dying, and who should be killed, when suddenly Louise made a noise like my father in the bathroom in the morning. Then she lurched from the panty hose, flew around the room twice, and fell in a heap in front of the sofa.
The cat screamed. I passed cranberry sauce through my nose, and Grandpa ran across the room, fell to his knees, and began administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. My brother fell back over his chair and wet his pants.
Granny threw down her napkin, stomped out of the room, and sat in the car.
It was indeed a Christmas to treasure and remember.
Later in my brother's garage, we conducted a thorough examination to decide the cause of Louise's collapse. We discovered that Louise had suffered from a hot ember to the back of her right thigh.
Fortunately, thanks to a wonder drug called duct tape, we restored her to perfect health!

You know, all this makes me wonder what Buggo has up his sleeve. I mean, a day before his arrest he DARED anyone to tap his phones and office. The day after his arrest, he goes back to work.
Yes, I have seen clinical narcissists, and yes, they can as oblivious as Buggo to what is really happening around them. But at the same time, they come off as out of touch.

Some of you old ones will remember that it was an assured fact that voter's fraud there cost Richard Nixon a loss in his race for President against John Kennedy. The crime committed there was, in my opinion, much greater than the doings surrounding the Watergate fiasco that led to Nixon's resignation.
Think of Chicago this way, if our country has a crusty belly button, or a smelly armpit, or an itching A-hole, Chicago is right up there as a clear winner.

I just like to be entertained. If that means weird, so be it. The "Sukiyaki Western Django" was weird, but mostly because it was a Japanese cast speaking English, or, in this case, Engrish. To me, that was hysterical, especially because a line kept coming up about the War of the Roses.
It was one of those movies, where, although it was in English, subtitles helped. A lot. "The Wire" was like that for me also.

I actually have the book on my list as a possible candidate for adapting to stage.
But it has to get in line behind my current rewrite of Joanne Greenberg's "Appearances" (after the public reading last month) and her newest book (not yet released) coming out in 2009. And then I have to get back to "A Modest Proposal."
There is so much theatrical you can do with a story that requires a character who has no movement. It's a wonderful challenge to stage that sort of set up, with out going over stagey but at the same time drawing the audience into the character. I love those sort of challenges.

A government lawyer told the Supreme Court yesterday that former attorney general John D. Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III should not be subjected to lawsuits filed by Arab Muslims who were detained in this country after the 2001 terrorist attacks and say they were singled out for harsh treatment because of their religion and ethnicity.Solicitor General Gregory G. Garre told the justices that Ashcroft and Mueller are protected from such suits when they are carrying out their duties, and that their actions constituted a "perfectly lawful law enforcement response to the 9/11 attacks."
The oral arguments in the case produced a spirited debate, as justices pondered the reach of civil lawsuits targeting public officials who allegedly abuse civil rights, the ability of the nation's leaders to go about their work without harassment and whether the balance is altered, in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia, "after an attack on this country of the magnitude of 9/11." ...
...Although the issue at hand was whether the circuit court had correctly decided that the case could go forward, much of the argument concerned whether the tough policies enacted after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were justified.
Reinert echoed the circuit court in saying that federal officials are never allowed to devise a scheme that would allow suspects to be swept up solely on the basis of their national origin and religion.
Scalia challenged Reinert's description, saying if that were the case, "the net surely was not cast wide enough, if anybody of that race, religion was swept in. I mean, if it's solely for that reason, there would have been hundreds of thousands of others." ...

Here's a soap opera.
Judge: Billy Tipton's "sons" can inherit their "mother's" estate
Establishing a legal precedent, a Spokane County judge has ruled that the three illegally adopted sons of Kitty Oakes and Billy Tipton can inherit equal shares of Oakes' $300,000 estate.
[snip]
]Kathleen "Kitty" Tipton Oakes was a former stripper known as the "Irish Venus" who lived as bandleader Tipton's wife in Spokane from 1962 until they separated in 1980. Oakes remarried in 1984 and later divorced.Tipton died in 1989 — when paramedics discovered the prominent jazz musician who'd lived as a man was actually a woman.
The revelation triggered a media frenzy — plus shock and anger for the three sons who thought Tipton was their father. Two of the sons changed their names soon after learning of Tipton's ruse.

To be fair, "Hussein" isn't that bad of a name. First, according to the 2000 U.S. census, there are more than 3,000 people in the U.S. with the last name of Hussein.
Even if we narrow the field to U.S. Presidents, "Hussein" doesn't begin to come close to the weirdest presidential middle names:
Ulysses S. Grant? Ulysses is his middle name! His full name is Hiram Ulysses Grant. When his congressman nominated him for West Point, he was mistakenly nominated as Ulysses S. Grant.
How about Rutherford B. Hayes? If "Rutherford" isn't bad enough, he's stuck with the middle name Birchard!
If you think "Hussein" is a weird middle name, feel free to change it to Warren Harding's middle name: Gamaliel
Let's not forget what the creators of the Simpsons did to Richard Nixon's middle name: Milhous
Finally, the gold standard in weird middle names for U.S. Presidents still goes to Harry S Truman. His middle name? S!

Text of pp 64

Also, ROD BLAGOJEVICH wanted to know whether SEIU could do something to get his wife a position at Change to Win until ROD BLAGOJEVICH could take a position at Change to Win.
101. On November 10, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH, his wife, JOHN HARRIS,
Governor General Counsel, and various Washington-D.C. based advisors, including Advisor B, discussed the open Senate seat during a conference call. (The Washington D.C.-based

a. ROD BLAGOJEVICH expressed his interest in figuring out a way to

ROD BLAGOJEVICH mentioned the Senate seat, the dynamics of a new Presidential administration with the strong contacts that ROD BLAGOJEVICH has in it, and asked what if anything he can do to make that work for him and his wife and his responsibilities as Governor of Illinois. Is it just me, or is anyone else more upset at the lack of outrage directed at someone like Rockefeller, who basically sold out his own country, as opposed to the coverage the Blagovich scandal is receiving? No doubt, Blago is a crook, and a dumb one at that. No doubt, Daley is involved somewhere, and I don't believe for an instant that the "One" had "no idea" what was going on back in Cook Co. However, this shit has been going on in political circles of every stripe since the founding of the country...only difference is that Republicans almost always get prosecuted, and Democrats, well...they have 9 lives. Back to Rockefeller...Heres a Senator, 3rd Ranking Dem on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence at the time, admit that while on a personal Mid East Junket, he informed the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria that in his opinion, the US was going to invade Iraq...over a year before we actually did! A US Senator informed Syria, the only other Bathist regime, the only other country that shared intelligence with Saddam's Iraq, that ran joint military operations with Saddam's Iraq, our intent to invade an ally of Syria! This wasn't some washed up Hollywood fool, this is an elected US Senator, one of 100. And yet, nothing. He essentially won re-election uncontested.
And yes, Syria was on the State Dept. list of state sponsors of terrorism at the time of Rockefellers "junket".

It's a great movie, but definitely low-budget. I saw it when it first came out.
It's always bothered me that in the very last scene, where Cord is playing the flute, that the music doesn't match the action.
Cord acts like he's playing a jig or a hornpipe. Something a lot more lively than what we hear.

I think that movie was dubbed for the American audience from Hong Kong cinema productions. I'd love to get a copy of it. I wrote a paper in college on what I deemed the "Hong Kong" style of martial arts movies. My professor viewed it with some skepticism until he watched a couple of the films I cited. I was overjoyed, years later, to watch all of the themes to which I called attention to recalled in Crouching Tiger. I'd love to watch that movie again in light of what I've learned.

The same with Jackson jr. Did you see the press conference that his legal eagle held today? Someone asked him if he thought Jackson would still become the next Senator, no matter how the selection was made. The lawyer answered "yes", and listed Jr.s qualifications. Along with serving the people of Illiois and his district, being a leader in the community, the lawyer said "he's entitled!"
Well! That's settled, then.

OT: No Issue Too Small To Get Attention from the State
License-plate frames that celebrate your favorite college or sports team become illegal next month if the frame obscures the state's name.
Starting Jan. 1, police can stop you if "Arizona" isn't clearly visible at the top of the plate. Violators will be fined an average of $135, plus court fees, depending on the city where the violation is discovered.
Wow, while the police are chasing after that guy with a joint, lets make sure we also have the boys in blue vigilant for this. And I am sure this new law will be enforced as equally and fairly as all the others and these guys will be he first to get tickets:
On Tuesday, half the 26 vehicles in the Arizona Senate parking lot bore frames obscuring the word "Arizona."
Yeah, right. This is just another "probably cause" for Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his boys to pull over every person with brown skin they run into.

This is an important process. There's a natural tendency to believe the worst of political opposition. People get heated, and a bit paranoid as well. After all, we do have an opposition that routinely rewrites history, resorting to Orwellian measures of document diddling.
Your blog's measured response and patient work at upholding some standard of reasonable evidence is so necessary, and it helps put on the brakes a bit. Free discussion at this forum, with room for dissent is so beneficial. Even more vital, however, is the commitment to rationality you display. The "de-kookification" effort will lead us to a revitalized unity. It is a 21st century recapitulation of the labors taken on by William F. Buckley, Jr., when he drove antisemites out of respectable discourse.
Important distinctions are being made. Thank you, Charles.

It's never been about the weirdness of his name. It's the fact that we weren't allowed to use it without being called racists. I said bullshit and I used his middle name. If it's good enough for him. It's good enough for me to say it. And, of course, now the rules have changed.
President-elect Barack Obama says he will try to "reboot America's image" among the world's Muslims and will follow tradition by using his entire name — Barack Hussein Obama — in his swearing-in ceremony.
His arrogance and disrespect for all that the troops have done for the Middle East is astounding. He's going to "reboot". He is going to do it. The troops gave their blood to reboot the Muslim Middle East. Freeing millions. And this clown insults our Soldiers by saying it will take him, the Messiah, to reboot.

Just like we always do, my brother:
Find the local media outlet,
Show them the research
Point out the importance,
Implore them to investigate.
We're talking Twin Cities media here, folks. They've been in bed deeply with the DFL for years. But I'm thinking the Star Tribune is getting sick of not selling newspapers enough to maybe bite on this story.

OK then; I don't think he's a kook or fringer- I think he knows exactly what he's doing and he's a very effective operative for the DNC.
i dropped a line through the front door... might mean more if our HMFWIIC did the same on his end.

In Chicago, Political Celebration Gives Way to Political Shame
CHICAGO -- The pride that's been surging through this city since Barack Obama's presidential victory last month is showing signs of deflating now that political corruption has returned to center stage in Illinois.
Political corruption in Chicago? I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
/How could this have happened?

When will the Feds seize Blago's HAIR? It should be a felony to force us to look at it.

Maybe this is just me, but it needs to be on a page that doesn't also have a picture of a koran in the toilet. I know you didn't put that there, but does the media care?
Yeah, I was quite disappointed at that. I can't delete responses to my posts there, but rest assured, I'll deal with that in my push at the media tomorrow. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. When I have a clearer head about me, I'll respond forthrightly.

Well, here's a little taste of the Zone... see if its something you'd want to spend two hours with.
Meh. Forbidden Zone reminds me of early John Waters stuff like Female Trouble and Desperate Living -- there's a lot of brilliant little oddball vignettes, but most people wouldn't necessarily want to sit through a half hour of it, let alone a feature-length movie. There's just too much "Lookit me, I'm subverting bourgeois dramatic paradigms!" And also, in Waters' case, not nearly enough editing -- for example, Mink Stole's neurotic-housewife freakout in Desperate Living. Ms. Stole does a hilarious job with Waters' over-the-top dialogue, but his glacially paced editing almost kills it, in my opinion. Then again, the problem could be that I'm not watching it stoned -- it would probably seem just perfect if I were viewing it in "marijuana time."
I also got the feeling that Richard Elfman made Forbidden Zone with the expectation that in 75 years, videomakers would be mining it for soundbites and samples, the way an earlier generation took little snippets from Andalusian Dog.

Clown? Nice.
Sorry that you and Ann Coulter have been misunderstood. You NEVER meant to imply that his middle name was some sort of coded slur, right? Oh, you poor misunderstood patriots.
Dick.

I think I split a gut at the one on the third page :
Illinoise senator, slightly retarded. Still works.
I'm still laughing at that one.
People 'round here seem to be feeling kinda grim. Not saying no one should, but I haven't seen the mood around here like this since, let's see, Oh never mind. Why name names and embarrass people? Point is, this place has consistently been one up on the lunatics, and that's a major achievement.

304...
Ann Coulter is a lot of things, but she would never be accused of not being "understood". So, yes, douche-bag, she damn well meant it as a slur, and given that the Constitution still protects the freedom to express ones self, Ann and anyone else can "slur" the no good SOB about to take office anytime they like...short of inciting violence or directly threatening him. Of course, your side produced award winning movies depicting the murder of President Bush, but we won't stoop...oops, skydive down to your level.
