LA Times: ‘The Always Insightful LGF’

Excuse me while I enjoy this moment—because it’s the first (and probably the only) time I’ve been praised at the Los Angeles Times, in a blog post by Andrew Malcolm: Joe the traitor now flushing good friend John McCain.

I hope Andrew doesn’t get fired for saying something nice about LGF.

you're gonna have to take the whole blog out and dip it in cootie repellent to make sure...

6 gmsc  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:11:42pm

OK, what's the gag?

First, the UN actually uses the word "terrorist" to describe a Muslim attacker, and then the LA Times praises LGF.

Just draw the man from behind the curtain already . . .

7 Sharmuta  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:11:51pm

The stalker blogs will of course use this to "prove" you're a leftist, Charles.

8 Walter L. Newton  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:12:15pm

Good chops for you Charles.

9 Cognito  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:12:35pm

Aw, don't say the only, man.

12 Steve  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:13:34pm

The only reason that they plugged you Charles was because you had an article that was negative on John McCain. And Joe the Plumber was the perfect patsy for the LAT

22 Charles Johnson  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:18:24pm

I've been going nuts all day because Safari kept locking up.

Finally I traced it down to the embedded MSNBC video I posted yesterday.

And once I checked out the code for that video (which is contained in an IFRAME) the reason became obvious -- MSNBC's web designers are morons.

Here's the URL that's loaded into the IFRAME:

If you're geekish enough to check out the source for that page, you'll see that it's incredibly badly put together, with an unterminated <head> section.

I wonder how much they paid for that piece of scheisse?

23 realwest  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:18:28pm

re: #13 Shug I don't like his tone or - except for the nice and accurate mention of Charles/LGF - the whole article - it's just a hit piece on Joe the Plumber and that's NOT what Charles' thread was about.

24 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:19:02pm

I actually started my daughter reading LGF on Election Day because the commentary elsewhere is so banal and vile. I'm not saying I agree with everything said, just that it's above the normal level of political threads.

25 gop_patriot  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:19:10pm

I'm glad that you got noticed and it wasn't in a negative manner, Charles! And that for once, you got a little credit.

re: #22 Charles

I've been using Safari (per your recommendation) for about 2 months now and it really cleared up a lot of speed issues I was having with LGF and EI7 (and I have the fastest broadband available from Comcast). EI7 just couldn't render the pages after about 500 comments, it just had so much trouble paging from memory to temporary disk space.

Safari has not burped once of a long thread.

But, I have noticed that links to certain pages with video's on them has caused Safari to shut down.

I know this is not a LGF bug, and I suspect that I have run up against malformed HTML pages, as Charles mentions in his comment above.

47 rawmuse  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:29:53pm

The only issue I ever have with LGF is that sometimes a page will not load completely. In other words, the progress bar will go to about 80 percent, and stop. If I want to load the whole page I have to have another go at it. That actually happens about a third of the time, and only on this site, to my observation.

48 HelloDare  Wed, Dec 10, 2008 10:30:16pm

That's a blast out of the past. "The Magic Land of Alakazam."

Trivia: Ever hear a magician on television make a big deal out of these facts:

1. There's a live audience
2. There is no trick photography. What you're seeing on TV is the same thing our live audience is seeing.
3. When you come to our live show, you'll see many of the same tricks you're seeing on TV.

It was Mark Wilson who first worked out these rules for performing magic effectively on television.

Ask any magician, and he'll tell you these are referred to as "The Mark Wilson Rules".

The courts don't matter in this case... the individual journalists and editors decide content... if one paper closes, they simply move on to another venue to spew their lies.
Remember what Mark Twain said: "If you don't read newspapers you are uninformed, if you read newspapers you are misinformed."

I was ready to dump Firefox too. I was getting tons of error messages in Firebug -- LGF would routinely have 3 - 7 per page, and tracking sites like google-analytics and quant.serve would make the page load grind to a halt.

Then I decided to try disabling my add-ons, one by one, and see if it was one of them.

I was. The villain was a simple cookie tool called "Extended Cookie Manager". I dumped it, and all of my problems disappeared!

Yep, I know these "rules." I posted this shameless self-promotion the other night...

No. One of the things I have never talked about here on LGF is my "career" as a professional magician and all the related arts that revolve around magical entertainment.

In the 70's, I did a lot of performing, into the 80's I started producing shows, for outdoor venues, such as state fairs, theme parks , wildlife parks and other entertainment venues.

I also created magical effects that were on the market, for purchase, by professional and amateur magicians. David Copperfield, a personal friend and of course a wonderful performer, used a number of my small close up effects on Carson.

I also have a full length theatre show call Poof!, which is a play based around magic [Link: home.comcast.net...]

Currently, I do very little anymore in the magic arts, but I do have both a 20 minute comedy magic act and a 20 minutes mind reading act that I can pull out any time needed.

And of course, I can bore you at parties until the cows come home.

My new favorite conservative radio host is Jerry Doyle out of Las Vegas. Sharp, funny, critical of folks when appropriate, but not MDS loony like Beck, Ingraham, Malkin and the rest of the bunch.

Hi funky chicken! Uh, I don't understand "MDS loony".
Oh and Ford was NEVER in for a handout (though you'd never know that from the MSM) they went in for a line of credit should they face rocky cash flow problems down the road. And that request was made on the heels of the financial bailout which didn't really unfreeze credit very much.

"Censorship is the worst thing to journalists so I decided to challenge it.

Some other journalists and I use a new technology for the war against censorship. The Style of work was easy. Everything that was impossible to publish in newspapers, we published on weblogs.

After a short time, my blog became famous for reporting real, uncensored news.

Unfortunately, Iran`s government became sure that the Internet and blogging helps spread democracy and for this reason, they started the filtering and persecution of blogs.

They didn’t tell people that everything was being filtering. They told them we filter only immoral sites."

I have and use Safari, Walter. The problem is it doesn't work well with certain sites I go to everyday- type runs together, content overlaps, etc.

There was a bug in FF3.02 -- it wouldn't remember user names or passwords on some sites. That was fixed for FF3.03.

Alternatively, it could just be the ol' "profile corrupted" thing -- reset it, and the problem often goes away.

Nope, but I will put that on my list. "Thunderhead" is not about a lost mine, but a lost treasure. It's on the level of Clive Cussler, and very much based on reality, but still fiction. The authors do a real good job of making fiction read like real.

Let's see . . .

Know the 13 Basic HTML Tags: Not a problem.

Build a Hackintosh: Um, no need - I'm running a real Mac and real OS X.

Recite pi to 23 Decimal Places: Only 23? I know the first 400 by heart!

Benchmark Your Computer: There are people who don't benchmark?!?

Securely Erase Your Data So it Can't be Recovered: My favorite utility can erase a hard drive in 35 iterations - and has a feature to do the same with the trash!

Explain What E=MC^2 Means to a Liberal Arts Major: Just tell them to click here.

Abstain from Buying Extended Warranties: I do this myself, and have sold a number of extended warraties myself (They're only a bad idea for the buyer ;)

Run Two Operating Systems: Done this time and time again. It's basic, but does need to be on the list.

Pull Off an Elaborate Prank: They just parodied the Hollywood sign prank on Numb3rs. Do I get extra geek points for knowing that?

Install and Configure a Virtual Machine: Hmmm . . . not a big deal on OS X.

Pick a Lock: Learned to do this, but outside a concern of computers (care to guess why, Walter?)

Differentiate Between Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb: Doing this right now.

Download Flash Video and Bend it to Your Will: Most of my YouTube videos were created with this as a step at some point. (BTW, Safari users, the activity window makes this nearly effortless!)

Get Around In DOS: Not a problem.

Rip a DVD to h.264: Transcoding? Done it several times.

Your turn to say something nice about the L.A. Times now. Come on, think hard.

175 jordash1212  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 1:27:38am

Charles you're going mainstream now?

some tried to buy it but it didnt work

177 NYCHardhat  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 3:49:51am

I will say it again. The media got him elected. Now they will have four years of scandals to report on. They will dump him in 2-3 years. It will be funny to watch. The media is the enemy and it must be destroyed.

*mantra mode off*

178 Cutty Sark  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 3:51:16am

" Joe " finally said what everyone should've known ...McCain nomination = Democrat victory .
The train was already off the tracks from the getgo.

179 Boxy_brown  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 5:08:28am

It's annoying to see the rats abandon the ship. At least Joe waited until the finish line unlike Chris Buckley or Bill Weld, etc...

McCain ran a lousy campaign and he had some thoroughly bad ideas. He was, however infinitely preferable to the product of the Chicago political machine/Saul Alinsky school/Damn America church that we wound up with. McCain had to face attacks from both sides; the democrats and the idiot right who love to label anyone who doesn't march in lockstep a "RINO". Now that it is over we have another shameless opportunist trying to cash in/extend his 15 minutes of fame. At this point, surveying the wreckage I have a lot of disgust for this basic lack of loyalty from "friend" and foe alike... and we haven't even sworn in Obama yet.

180 KitchenQueen  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 5:08:37am

I just love how that LA Times article makes it sound like Joe was worried about tax *cuts.*

Um, no.

181 Randall Gross  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 5:44:09am

Now that was insightful of the LA Times

182 kansas  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 6:04:07am

Funny how now that they got their man elected they all have suddenly discovered what everyone else already knew. This is just so they can say they were on it all the time. BS.

183 FrogMarch  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 7:02:22am

re: #29 winston06

this is the same LAtimes that did conceal the Obama-Rashidi tape

yeah - let us not forget that.

184 Ty85719  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 7:17:27am

Regardless of any positive mention of LGF, the LA Times is still good for nothing but fish wrap or toilet paper; the English language writing skills present in the linked article are akin to a grade school student. At least half of the paragraphs began with, "but" and, "and."

"Joe thinks a second to find an answer, which Democrats won't like."

Take notice that the author never takes the time to mention the answer: the notion of an Obama presidency was absolutely sickening to Mr. Wurzelbacher in comparison to McCain. However, this comes as no surprise, as the author doesn't seem capable of composing paragraphs longer than two sentences

re: #10 solomonpanting

Andrew Malcolm is not your typical LATimes moonbat.

Exactly. If you follow Top of the Ticket, it's pretty clear that Andrew Malcolm stood out. If there was something positive about Sarah Palin, he'd bring it up. I wouldn't be surprised if Malcolm were a Republican.

Jake Tapper was another MSM guy who didn't always go to bat for the Democrats. Tapper's liberalism did show a bit too much for my taste, but it's pretty clear that he isn't strictly a Kool Aid drinker.

What's sad is that people like Malcolm and Tapper are so outnumbered. That's why they stand out.

186 Bagua  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 7:24:43am

Congratulations Charles on the much deserved acknowledgment.

Truly a man bites dog event.

I wonder if it’s even possible to guess at how many times LGF stories have been used by the MSM without giving credit?

187 caligal  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:05:53am

Congrats on your perspicacity.

188 nyc redneck  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:06:51am

"and the always insightful little green footballs"
way to go charles, always keeping it relevant and classy.

189 Ojoe  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:30:41am

"Sarah Palin is the Real Deal."

Yes. you got it Joe.

190 kansas  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:40:02am

re: #189 Ojoe

"Sarah Palin is the Real Deal."

Yes. you got it Joe.

So last night I decide that instead of slamming my head against the wall I'll check out Hardball. 45 seconds I watched that moron Matthews throw softballs at William Ayers who slammed Sarah Palin. Went back to slamming my head against the wall. It was less painful.

191 Ojoe  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 8:47:12am

Even morons will be appalled at the next 4 years.

Palin 2012.

192 J'accuzzi  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 9:03:02am

Must be tree killers remorse.
Looking forward to seeing long lineups of people waving "I will write lies for food, please help" signs at the Obama Employment Offices across the country.

193 J.S.  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 9:28:39am

Slightly OT

I believe the glow is off (with respect to the BBC and Obama); I'd say, give them another couple of weeks, and it'll be back to good ol' America bashing...

194 wiffersnapper  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 10:35:59am

Congrats on earning another stripe in the ranks of the blogosphere, Charles! *beer*

195 Pauley  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 2:52:20pm

Joe the Traitor? Seeeriously? Journalism? Seeeriously?
I think traitor is just a wee bit strong a term to use to describe a man who asked an unapproved question of a political candidate...regardless of whether said candidate is the messiah or not.

I suppose the "traitor" term eminates from his exposing "journalists" lack of asking any real or pertinent questions in lieu of cheerleading for the "Chosen One".

BTW, Congrats Charles (I guess this is sorta an honorable mention)
