More evidence that Barack Obama and Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich did discuss Obama’s Senate seat, despite Obama’s flat denial that discussions took place: Chicago Tribune article referenced Obama-Blago discussions on Senate Seat.

Either way he kinda sucks at this so far.

No good can come of this:

1. Even more disillusionment in the political process.

2. Option #1: Ruining the first black president before he has even taken the oath (at which point apparently it will be ok to use his middle name again, or so I've heard).

3. Option #2: Not ruining the first black president precisely because he is the first black president (and (cough) democrat (cough) and therefore immune to criticism.

4. Option #3 Obama had nothing to do with it. Always possible, but I still question how the governor knew the Obama team wouldn't pay him if he hadn't asked...

FOURTEEN suspected al-Qaeda terrorists were detained in Brussels today before Gordon Brown was due to meet EU leaders.

The sweep came just hours before a summit brought together the heads of the 27 EU countries in Brussels.

One of the suspects is believed to be a suicide bomber mounting an operation "from which he was not expected to come back".

It is thought a terror attack was being planned – but the target has not been revealed.

Oh: Obama to List Staff Contact with Blago

President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday morning that he is “confident” no one representing him took part in any pay-to-play dealings with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich over filling Obama’s U.S. Senate seat, and pledged to release details of contacts between his team and the governor’s office in the next few days.

“I have never spoken to the governor on this subject. I am confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this seat. I think the materials released by the U.S. Attorney reflect that fact,” Obama said at a Chicago news conference. “I’ve asked my team to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor’s office about this vacancy so that we can share them with you over the next few days.”

Actually, anyone who thinks the O did NOT have discussions w/ the governor would be woefully naive. Of course any senator elected to POTUS would have those discussions, unless, like Massachusetts, the governor does NOT appoint a replacement, but a special election is held. Then again, you cannot blame Obams for thinking that all he has to do is say it never happened, and people will believe him. Look at the election. He is right, for the most part, but I think that honeymoon will come to a screeching halt in the not too distant future. You can fool some of the people some of the time...

Media is prepping the cover for Obama... (HT Rush)

Is Illinois Gov. Blagojevich nuts?

He's not nuts. It's pretty typcial for Chicago Machine thugs politicians

John Kass: By Chicago standards, Blagojevich isn't crazy

When it comes to Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-Dead Meat), many national TV talking heads can't resist playing amateur psychiatrist.

"He's crazy," said one talking head of our governor. "A sociopath!" said another. "He should have been put in a straitjacket, not handcuffs," said a third, all of them diagnosing Blagojevich as cuckoo.

I can see how they arrived at their cockamamie theory. Anyone who read the federal complaint with all the f-bombs in there and watched Blagojevich drive to work on Wednesday morning, the TV crews following his black SUV in a low-speed chase, as if he were some angry Serbian O.J., might think he had lost his marbles.

But is Blagojevich truly cuckoo?

I have become so jaded and cynical by the bad faith that's evident in everything I see the democrats and the media do that a large part of me wants to pay them back in kind. What I mean in this case is that even if Obama wasn't involved in actually striking a deal - I'm not willing to extend him, or his staff, the benefit of the doubt. I do want technicalities like whether he did actually talk to Blago or not, to be dug into and made an issue of.
The issues between conservatives and liberals stopped being a fair fight a long time ago and it was the libs that made it so. The new rule is - 'there ain't no rules in a knife fight'

140 turn  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 9:34:24am

re: #25 WitchDoctor

No good can come of this:

1. Even more disillusionment in the political process.

2. Option #1: Ruining the first black president before he has even taken the oath (at which point apparently it will be ok to use his middle name again, or so I've heard).

3. Option #2: Not ruining the first black president precisely because he is the first black president (and (cough) democrat (cough) and therefore immune to criticism.

4. Option #3 Obama had nothing to do with it. Always possible, but I still question how the governor knew the Obama team wouldn't pay him if he hadn't asked...

I got down dinged yesterday afternoon for suggesting the downside of Option 1 made Option 2 seem like the best course for the nation. I was fearful of what chaos might be created by stripping the first black president of his election. I'm still a bit fearful of that but I thought about my position more when I walked the lab last night and think I deserved the down dings.

I believe Obama has probably lied yet I feel that indiscretion alone doesn't warrant stripping him of office. What dawned on me last night is that it won't because he hasn't perjured himself YET, he can always come back and say "I didn't recall" and weasel his way out. But it is looking more and more like this thing runs way deeper than a single lie. So if there is evidence that warrants an indictment, then I'm good with Option 1, the rule of law should be followed regardless of the downside.

Patricia Blagojevich's Family Rallies to Her Defense

Patricia Blagojevich's father, sister and brother are refuting the foul-mouthed portrait that's been drawn of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's wife since his arrest, saying the first lady has been living in a pressure cooker.

Chicago Alderman Dick Mell, state Representative-elect Deborah Mell and Rich Mell told the Chicago Sun-Times and NBC5 in an exclusive interview Wednesday that profanity-laced comments recorded by federal prosecutors don't reflect who Patricia Blagojevich really is.

"That is absolutely not my sister," Deborah Mell said. "Patti is a mother, a sister and a devoted wife.

"She is particularly protective of her family."

With something like that, I would think the radio stations could get an immediate injunction allowing them to stay on the air until the appeals process works its way through the courts.

BTW, has there been any talk of a lizard meet-up for December? This week is the second Sunday, but I know people are busy this time of year.

An injunction would be very nice.

I can say for myself that December's not going to be an easy meet-up month. Should we go ahead and just plan for a early January meet?

Like I've been saying from the outset, I think Fitzgerald will start issuing subpoenas on everyone surrounding both Obama and Blagojavich to find out who's telling the truth, who will be sucked into a perjury trap, and whether any additional criminality is present.

If Blago and Obama keep spinning they had no contacts or any discussions - the existence of a single call or a single discussion means they're lying. If they're lying under oath, that's perjury. If they're lying to investigators, that's obstruction of justice.

Obama is above it all.

In fact, know who is the hero who was indispensable to outing Blagojevich? You got it, Obama according to the NY Times.

In a sequence of events that neatly captures the contradictions of Barack Obama’s rise through Illinois politics, a phone call he made three months ago to urge passage of a state ethics bill indirectly contributed to the downfall of a fellow Democrat he twice supported, Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich.

Mr. Obama placed the call to his political mentor, Emil Jones Jr., president of the Illinois Senate.

You're right, it doesn't make any sense to lie. It's just plain stupid, he's setting himself up to get nailed on perjury. It's so stupid you have to wonder, there must be something much more devastating to him lying beneath all this.

Well, it's not perjury unless he's under oath. If Congress holds any sort of hearings (doubtful), the Democrats would never allow him to be sworn. So even if he is lying about the content of the meeting (and I'm not convinced he is), he'll never face justice for it. But I agree with you, there is something here that doesn't smell right. I just think it's going to take a whole lot more for the truth to come out.

These Machine crooks have gotten so used to operating in this environment that they have gotten very sloppy over the years. Use just a teaspoon or two, dissolved first in about 1/3 cup of water, stir it in...OR...sprinkle in about 1/4 cup of instant mashed potatoes, stir, and if you want it thicker, sprinkle in some more. By adding gradually you control how many calories you put in. Or, take a tablespoon of flour, dissolve it in water, stir it into the soup. The flour, the cornstarch, the potato flakes--by adding in increments you control the calories.

A small amount of corn starch should do the trick.

Shake the corn starch in a jar with a little bit of warm water until you have a slurry. Then poor into the broth. Bring the broth to a boil and continue stirring until you get the thickness you want. Turn the heat down immediately at that point.

No, the Chicago Machine didn't get to where it is by being stupid. But they've been in power a LOOONG time and get used to doing things a certain way, not ever thinking that they'd get caught.
Hell look at John Gotti (and NO I'm not comparing Gotti to Obama or Blago) - he KNEW he was being wiretapped and it STILL took the Feds 4 tries before they could convict him.
I still think the CM just kept doing business as usual without even thinking that they might get caught.

It's called hurbris and we know of several of the actors in this drama who are full of it.

re: #305 Kenneth

The nagging question is why did Obama make such a bone-headed lie about it? There may be more to the recordings than we have heard so far.

The instinct for all Chicago Machine hacks is to instantly deny. It's in their DNA.

And for decades the local media would accept it (with rare exceptions) and look the other way.

So they have learned that response as a successful way to make bad news go away.

Cornstarch has 488 calories a cup, Wondra has 400 calories a cup, add butter (which has 100 calories a pat) and you got some problems here.

I'm googling trying to find some alternative. I'm talking barely no calories. even 50-100 calories added to a soup is too much in my book.

One solution is to try and 'reduce' the soup - leave it simmering for quite a while, stirring, until the desired thickness ... 30, 40 minutes ...
No extra calories, and stronger taste ...

That's a good analysis, and I think it is what happened. I think Obama had a conversation with Blagwort about appointing a successor--perfectly natural. The denial was a knee-jerk thing, just as you describe. No Obama is stuck with it, his best shot is to temporize and parse the meaning.

The funny part is going to be when multiple "potential senators" turn out to have rogue staff members having approached Blagojevich without their authorization. As if they just wanted to surprise their boss with the senate seat, but only after it had been wrapped up with a bow on it. Watch.

And I'm not fantasizing - thanks a lot for that one - the Feds DID get Blago talking on tape. He was just doing what the Chicago Machine has gotten used to doing - buying and selling favors - illegal to be sure, but the norm for the machine.
And as has been pointed out, Blago - ON TAPE - said that he wasn't getting anything - but that necessarily means he asked for something and was turned down.

 Frank says:

The crux of the biscuit is: If it entertains you, fine. Enjoy it. If it doesn't, then blow it out your ass. I do it to amuse myself. If I like it, I release it. If somebody else likes it, that's a bonus. -- What he's talking about is obvious. He said this in an interview with Playboy magazine on May 2, 1993.
