Obama Promises to Detail Meetings with Blagojevich

The latest from the president-elect on the Blagojevich scandal: Obama to list staff contact with Blago.

President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday morning that he is “confident” no one representing him took part in any pay-to-play dealings with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich over filling Obama’s U.S. Senate seat, and pledged to release details of contacts between his team and the governor’s office in the next few days.

“I have never spoken to the governor on this subject. I am confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this seat. I think the materials released by the U.S. Attorney reflect that fact,” Obama said at a Chicago news conference. “I’ve asked my team to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor’s office about this vacancy so that we can share them with you over the next few days.”

The press has invested 2 straight years in Obama. But theuy are also dying. And I don't mean dying in the sense that we're all gonna go sometime, I mean their industry's death is imminent.

And what was (so we've been told) journalism's high water mark? The unseating of a corrupt President. Woodward and Bernstein were made national heroes and their lousy profession was given a shot in the arm like it never had.

So, here they are, at the proverbial precipice. Their industry can cover for Obama and lose the last vestige of credibility it has, and next year we can watch every major newspaper go bankrupt... or they can do what they (used to) do best, publish every sorted detail which TV just can't do justice to, and take down the Illinois machine by turning over every rock and blasting sunshine into every corner.

It's come-to-Jesus time for the newspaper industry. This scandal may just be their last chance.

A reading from Book of Obama

3:1 For The One spoke, and verily, all that He spake came to pass. Those with whom He had discourse in the past, knew not of what matter the discourse took.

2 Missals and privy tidings between His ambassadors and Lord Helmetlocks of Springfield vanished as like the dew.

3 But the Great Prosecutor, who had employed spies to catch out Lord Helmetlocks in foul trickery, did not heed the word of Obama. His recollection did not fade, nor did those of his minions.

4 Also, there were traitors in the land who sought to cast blame upon Obama, saying “Why dost He lie, and seek to deny that which all others say?”

5 And Obama smote the traitors saying, “Uhm, uh, Let me stop you there. We … I said I never had a meeting. And I didn’t. So let it be written, so let it be done.”

6 And the earth opened up and swallowed the traitors. Then the skies disgorged unicorns which shat flowers and rainbows.

Hmmm. EVERY person that I know of that leaves a Senate seat discusses whom they would like to succeed them with whomever is given the decision-making process (person or persons). This is so much a standard practice nowadays that for The Mighty O to say that he never had any discussions with Blago about this is just a bald-faced LIE.

The person/s that are in the discussion doesn't/don't have to appoint the outgoing office-holder's request, but it's usually given much weight.

The pay-to-play may or may not have been an issue, but I'm standing firm in my above statement.

While it may seem that Democrats are willing to bail out anybody, I don't think there will ever be a time we have state-owned or state-run newspapers in this country. It is impossible for a newspaper to accurately report on government if it sucks off the government teat. No one will read the US version of Pravda.

The eventual story is going to be that some evil overzealous member of Obama's staff met with blago without authorization. I predict we're going to hear the word "authorize" until it loses meaning. The funny part is going to be when multiple "potential senators" turn out to have rogue staff members having approached Blagojevich without their authorization. As if they just wanted to surprise their boss with the senate seat, but only after it had been wrapped up with a bow on it. Watch.

Maybe Obama didn't know about any of this. He didn't know Bloggo was capable of this, he didn't know Ayers was anything other than a teacher, he didn't know Rekzo was pulling off deals, he didn't know...

Wait, if Obama has gone through all these years of politics, and these are NOT the people he knew, then I'm a little afraid of having someone like that run the country.

I wanted to repeat this comment because it's the crux of the issue:

re: #47 Lizard by the Bay

I think they'll blow it.

So- when certain people start putting their bread and butter under the same scrutiny they place LGF and other blogs, perhaps they'll stop showing up on the "Bottom Comments". Until then, I will continue to judge them as harshly as I judge their peers.

What a lovely Christmas gift...

It always sounds so nice to have a kid on or around Christmas. However, it's usually hell on the kid.

I had a friend born on Dec. 26th. He would always get "combined birthday/Christmas presents". After 3 years of this, he finally got smart. He started keeping a record of everyone who gave him these "combined" presents, and would return the favor, regardless of when their birthday was. His cards would usually read something like: "It's June 12th, so happy birthday! Here's your combined birthday and Christmas present!"

When Christmas rolled around? "But, I already gave you your combined birthday/Christmas present!"

Yeah, that "combined present" stuff stopped in less than 2 years.

“I have never spoken to the governor on this subject.

Just imagine the horror, shock and outrage when we find out that Obama's as good at parsing as Clinton was, and can claim that "this" - the focus of everyone's discussion on Blagojavich's intent to profit from Obama's seat and who would succeed him allows him to weasel out of trouble - or not.

Obama is pretty definitive in that he never had discussions with Blago on "this" subject.

If he is found to have done so, that's grounds for charges of obstruction of justice. Fitzgerald knows as much - since that's how Libby got in to the mess he did.

It's called a perjury trap, and those definitive statements are going to come back to bite hard if anyone can show otherwise.

If Obama didn't have any contacts as he claims, Obama's in the clear on Blago for the moment. That doesn't mean Obama doesn't have problems relating to Rezko or that Blago and Obama didn't discuss other issues that might rise to the level of criminality. We just haven't gotten to that point yet.

This is what happens when you allow yourself to be surrounded by crooks, hooligans, terrorists, and unsavory characters. You will be dragged down to their level, and if you willingly chose to associate with these people, then you're no better than them.

I have to get ready for a meeting. Bill Richardson seemed to think that New Mexico could save money by turning over all Medicaid stuff to managed care companies, pay them to do it, but still keep all of the state employees and their departments that handled it before.

So this is the kind of thinking we are going to get with Big Bill at the head of Commerce. Just look at the economic powerhouse he turned New Mexico into. Last I checked, New Mexico was ranked 49th and 50th in terms of poverty and quality of living in the US. Yup, good ol' Bill, hand picked by Barry the wonder boy.

so what do the state employees who used to handle all the medicaid stuff do now? Lobby?

um...I have a question that may have been answered already, but why won't Blago resign? He is caught on tape, not like a sex scandal, but of a crime! what can he negotiate? I'm lost

can he really be found "insane" and avoid trial or even talking to prosecutors?

Happy Hajj from the RoP...

Two million Muslim pilgrims gather outside Mecca for haj

Despite a ban on political activities at haj, a senior Iranian cleric gave a speech at Arafat to a group of pilgrims, who chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel", Iran's state television showed.

Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammadi Reyshahri, head of Iran's haj mission, told the pilgrims some Muslims had despaired "in the face of Western civilization's onslaught" but that today there was a "resurgence of Islam".

Lawhawk, good point. That's how Democrats go after Republicans. Bring up a false charge. Then have them testify under oath. If the Republican says something untrue ("I was never in that establishment"), you get them on that. It's a way to convict someone who has committed no crime.

Obama should not try to tap dance around this if he has no direct knowledge or connections to illegal activity.

Haven't read the whole thread, so this has probably been pointed out already: anyone who has read - carefully - Fitzgerald's statement will note that he says only that the complaint on file does not implicate Obama or his team. But there are plenty of other indications (like a subpoena of the Rezko/Obama land deal documents) that Fitz is far from through. The complaint was only filed to head off particularly imminent and nefarious acts. He's not done by a country mile.

Keep a close watch on Obama's sweat glands.

This one's probably gonna play out pretty fast, so we'll know soon enough what happened.

Frankly, I'm not going to get excited about any of this yet.

First, there's Blago. Apparently, he was absolutely furious that the Obama team wouldn't play ball with him, and offered nothing in return but their best wishes. So it sounds like whatever meeting took place didn't involve any collusion on the Obama side of things.

Second, Obama wouldn't have met with Blago directly, at least not to discuss concrete details of any sort. The preliminaries for such negotiations are always handled through intermediaries.

I suspect that the worst that will come out of this is that Obama's underlings were hit up for cash by Blago, reported back to Obama, and never took the bait. The only serious question this raises, if such a meeting took place, is why Obama didn't report an obvious crime. Assuming he didn't. At this point, for all I know, he dropped a dime on Blago and was told to take a number. Since shortly after the election, Obama has been receiving daily briefings on all major government activities, including defense, intelligence, and certainly Justice Department activities as they try to bring him into the loop.

There may be some embarrassment in store, but I doubt it will amount to much of anything. Republicans sit on all the oversight committees, and you can be sure that any hint from Justice that Obama's nose might not be clean would leaked instantly.

I just don't think this dog's gonna hunt.

It just took only three days to parse an answer that wouldn't directly contradict himself? Wow, their scanning tail covering methods are getting better. During the campaign it tok a couple of weeks to come up with a bs response

When during the campaign did he ever get his feet held to the fire?

With Wrght? All he did was give a speech on race relations - which was rather banal - and the press hailed it as the greatest speech on race ever! Wright was never mentioned again.

With Rezko? I think he gave a half hour Q&A and then said, I've answered your questions. I used poor judgement. Sorry. And the issue was never asked this again. I still don't understand it.

With Ayers? He was just some guy in his neighborhood. Obama has never had to explain that lie.

Let's face it. This is the first time Obama & Co. has ever had to own up to anything.

My suspicion, call it my conspiracy theory here, is that Rahm went to Fizpatrick on Obama's behalf and gave up Blago hoping to give BHO cover and discredit an embarrassing dirty associate. Fizpatrick already had much on Blago from Rezko and if you recall I predicted long ago that the Daley machine would try to feed the Governor to the Feds as a fall guy to protect Obama. Now the question is how massively does Blago wish to retaliate? Does he want to protect his wife by protecting Obama? Does Fitzpatrick want to accept that deal? There is no doubt in my mind that there should be enough on Obama from Rezko etc. to bring him down if Fitzpatrick wants to. The key is Rahm Emmanuel. If Blago could give the Feds enough to drive a wedge between Rahm and Obama then it could all unravel. My guess is that Obama's version of Sid Vicious stays loyal and Fitzpatrick does not move against the big O.

um...I have a question that may have been answered already, but why won't Blago resign? He is caught on tape, not like a sex scandal, but of a crime! what can he negotiate? I'm lost

can he really be found "insane" and avoid trial or even talking to prosecutors?

He won't resign because he's a sociopathic, narcissistic moron. At least, I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

This ongoing revelation is only the tip of the iceberg, covering events he's been involved in over the last 6 weeks or so. He's been in office for 6 YEARS, and you can be sure he does this sort of thing all the time, and probably feels completely immune to the laws governing "the little people." I'm sure he's thinking his lawyer will get him out of this.

In reality, he'll probably wind up copping a plea, and singing a duet with Rezko in exchange for a reduced sentence and a resignation.

Justice is going to have to release the other Senate candidates names, too. And quickly. Any of them, despite the nature of their involvement - including those who were hit up for a bribe and rapidly refused - are tainted by association, and their career in the Senate would be hamstrung when the names are finally released. Best to get that bit out of the way right now.

Or maybe Illinois will simply add a Governor's Wing onto Statesville.

ah...did you happen to read the suggested question Number 7 from the Politico blog? that question was never asked, of course.

Here's the re-cap -- Question Number 7 was -- "“Do you regret supporting Blagojevich?”

And the Politico author, Vogel wrote:

"Obama endorsed Blagojevich in his two gubernatorial runs and was among his key advisors during his first bid, in 2002. During the governor’s reelection campaign in 2006 – with press reports swirling about a grand jury investigation into Blagojevich’s alleged jobs-for-contributions scheme – Obama praised the governor as a leader “who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois.”

Yeah, now that's being politically savvy -- in the LightWorker's/Messiah way we've all come to know and love...

I tried, TRIED, to get my wife (Dec 15th) and my second daughter (Dec 11th) to have their "half-birthday" 6 months later/earlier, in June. They would have none of it, even though it meant more schwag for them.

Sigh. It made sense to me...

Walter,

I highly respect many of my Mormon friends, would have voted for Romney, did send him money.

Thing is the Mormons are neck deep in the import, use, and enabling of the illegal immigration from Mexico. The coal mine that fell in in Utah,
99% of the workers were illegals, only the boss's were U.S.,, it stinks.

They are attempting to build up their numbers via the illegals and it is dead wrong.

It in fact is illegal.

So, what the fuck does that have to do with their sacred undergarments?

re: #517 buzzsawmonkey

I'm sure the Mormons here have taken my comments in good fun, as they were intended; I was not poking fun at the garments, but at the "Mormon Lover" gay thing.

For what it's worth, sacred underwear is not a Mormon invention. The Bible commands Jews to wear fringes (tzitzit) on the corners of our garments, a mitzvah which has been fulfilled for centuries by men wearing a sort of mini-poncho called a tallis katan (small tallis) with fringes at the four corners properly knotted to symbolize the 613 commandments.

There are a number of stories in the Talmud of various rabbis being tempted by courtesans and the fringes of the tzitzit miraculously slapping them out of their lustful plans.

So I figure that, coming from a religious tradition which also has funny underwear, I can joke across the vast doctrinal gulfs with those of another tradition that has similar restrictions.

I am well aware of Jewish ritual clothing, I'm the most Jewish Goy you have ever met. But I don't know. Here on LGF we try to respect each others religion (or no belief as in my case) and this just bothered me for some reason.

I wasn't telling anyone not to make fun of, or use sarcasm about any religion. I was just stating my opinion on the subject. I'm a friggin atheist so I have no dog in the fight.

TFK, look. I was making a comment about making fun of Mormons religious practice. You come back and start ranting about their politics and other secular things.

How in the hell did you connect my comment about sacred undergarment and some illegals working in a mine in Utah?

I may be getting to be a real prick, but you are getting sick.

Thanks for sticking up for us - I respond in the next thread. Don't worry too much. It's o.k. if others disagree or find some of our practices unusual. As long as they respect my right to practice my religion freely. I do appreciate you arguing for our dignity though.

And come on Dianna, be honest. As Buzz mentioned above, there is all sorts of traditional Jewish sacred garments. Look at the massive selection of ritual clothing in the Catholic Church. Even the Masons have different costumes for each one of their rituals.

Sure, you can make fun of anything you want, but considering the wide variety of people we have here, and the fact that we seem to respect each others religious beliefs, I just thought I would inquire.

In defense of the faith... please distinguish what some people who are Mormons are doing that may be unethical or illegal from the doctrines and practices of our faith which tell us that we should be honest and obey the laws of the lands where we live.

Dishonesty and the abuse of illegal laborers is not a "Mormon thing". Unfortunately there is no shortage of idiots (yes I went there) among us that would justify their bad works by claiming a place among the faithful.

I think they'll blow it.

Obama will send them a bailout. A free and fair press is essential to our democracy, silly. So they, like Fitz and his "friend" Rezko will follow the story up and until it could damage Obama.

In the Veggie Tales movie, Jonah!, one verse from the song A Message From the Lord is "Wear four tassles on your cloak, Do not laugh. It's not a joke."

Yeah, they'll blame the Senate Republicans for threatening a filibuster of the Auto Bailout...

GOP Senate filibuster... Now there is a term to get used to for the next 2 years...

BTW, I wonder how John McCain feels about the Auto Bailout?

Well, since it's starting to look like Hank Paulson and Bernanke may have actually been wrong/lying about the whole "credit disaster waiting to happen" 6 weeks before the election...and supporting the bailout, and believing the Bush Admin when they screamed "NEW GREAT DEPRESSION IF YOU DON'T DO SOMETHING NOW" probably cost him the election (he and Palin had the lead before the "credit crisis worse than 1930" hit) ... I'd guess he's feeling rather uncharitable towards this latest Bush Administration proposal.

And don't any of you think this is anything but another Bush administration bailout proposal, worked in partnership with congressional democrats...just like the Paulson piggybank for his ING and Goldmann Sachs friends...because it is.

The only reason house GOP folks even got seats at the Paulson bailout table was because McCain went back and used his clout to get them there.

I don't know JJ Jr., but without evidence against his integrity, I'm thinking he is telling the truth. He also has a good long record in the House and has actually showed up to vote. Only negative is he's Democrat.

Wife, jewelry
My oldest daughter, a new camera (under $100, although *I* wanted to spend more!)
My second daughter, a new HP 5550C printers (Costco had a sale)
My son, new telephones for his house (he NEEDS 'em!)
My youngest daughter, a printer (see above).

My oldest gets her laptop looked at by me - if I can't fix it, she gets my old tower. My middle gets her car looked at. My son's in Illinois and won't be home for this Christmas, I visited him in October and fixed his car and his riding lawn mower. My youngest got her car from my oldest and I am going through it fixing small broken things (door latches, radio, cruise control, tune up, etc.).
My wife got a brand new deck and a (used but in very good shape) hot tub right off the bedroom with a complete privacy fence. Punched a door through the outside of the house, the tub is now two steps away from the door. She *loves* it!

God's been very, VERY good to us this year! I hope he's good to all you Lizards as well, even you Atheists...

Police have surrounded UQAM in downtown Montreal amid reports of an armed man.

Some people say they heard what sounded like gunshots but police can't confirm the source of the noise.

Several ambulances are also at the Universite du Quebec in Montreal in case of casualties. Although no casualties have been reported.

Police say they received calls about a loud bang inside the building housing the university's education faculty, which is near the busy Berri-UQAM subway station.

Some students say they heard rumours police are looking for an armed man.

Authorities say there is no trace of any blood.

O'Bama's promise reminded me of an Irish fable:

Two Irishmen, Patrick Murphy and Shawn O’Brian grew up together and were lifelong friends. But alas, Patrick developed cancer, and was dying. While on his deathbed, Patrick called to his buddy, Shawn, “O’Brian, come ‘ere. I ‘ave a request for ye.” Shawn walked to his friend’s bedside and kneels.
“Shawny ole boy, we’ve been friends all our lives, and now I’m leaving ‘ere. I ‘ave one last request fir ye to do.”O’Brian burst into tears, “Anything Patrick, anything ye wish. It’s done.”

“Well, under me bed is a box containing a bottle of the finest whiskey in all of Ireland. Bottled the year I was born it was. After I die, and they plant me in the ground, I want you to pour that fine whiskey over me grave so it might soak into me bones and I’ll be able to enjoy it for all eternity.”

O’Brian was overcome by the beauty and in the true Irish spirit of his friend’s request, he asked, “Aye, tis a fine thing you ask of me, and I will pour the whiskey. But, might I strain it through me kidneys first?”

The New Messiah has quickly mastered the Clintonesque half-lie and the meaningless non-disclosing disclosure.

They will only disclose any meetings at which a subject was discussed which they've already pinky-sworn was never discussed at all. So they won't have to disclose all Rahm Emmanuel's meetings with the Gov...because they were obviously talking about something else.

"I did not have Senate seat discussion with that man...Monica, er, I mean, Governor..."

O is lying thru his whistling teeth.
it is preposterous to think he would not have addressed the issue of his empty senate seat w/ blago, the guy who was responsible for filling the vacancy.
it would only be normal and expected for them to discuss this issue.
he is lying because of the nature and tone of their conversation.
the criminal bargaining that ensued.

It's crazy that O would say that he never discussed the Senate seat with Blagojovich. O should have said that he discussed the seat but that he said he wouldn't sell it to the Gov. because that was illegal and immoral. That would have been much more logical and possibly even believable statement (if I didn't already know O was a liar).

UPDATE TO UPDATE

Reports of loud noises sounding like big bangs or gunshots triggered a massive police operation this afternoon that surrounded the downtown UQAM campus and locked down buildings.

Police say they got the 9-1-1 call at about 1:45 p.m. The noises were heard in the Science and Education building at St. Denis and Réné Lévesque.
The university sent out a message over the intercom reporting a state of emergency and telling staff and students to stay put and close the doors of classrooms and offices. Dozens of police officers arrived and started conducting a search.

Police say they found firecrackers and other pyrotechnical material in an elevator and that the reported noises appeared to come from there.

Police also say they found a backpack containing unused .22 calibre bullet casings and two knives. They are continuing their search as a preventive measure.

No incidents have been reported, with police finding no traces of blood or damage caused by gunfire. No one was hurt. Three people were treated on site for shock. Police haven't found a suspect as of yet.

About two hours after the 9-1-1 call, another intercom message went out saying police were proceeding with evacuations.

At about 4 p.m., UQAM officials were saying things appeared to be getting under control. They said the reported noises sounded like detonations. Other reports said they sounded like gunfire.

The Science and Education Building will remain closed tonight. All exams and courses are cancelled. The rest of the campus will re-open after police finish conducting their searches and they'll start to let people out of the locked-down buildings.

Both Jackson and Obama need to come forward as to who were the go betweens apparently speaking on their behalf to Blagojevich's people. They also need to address the fact that they seem not to have notified authorities that Blagojevich was selling this Senate seat.

Covering Jackson's ass maybe? Fitzgerald stopped the investigation before Blagojevich actually got anything. Jesse Jr. was supposed to put up "something tangible" real soon, before Blagojevich was going to appoint anyone, way before Obama was to be sworn in, why didn't he wait to see how this played out?

ok, ok, so Obama did, as opposed to what he initially said, discuss with the Illinois Governor his seat, which the then Governor tried to sell.
So what? Don't forget that Alaska Governor standing by while turkeys being slaughtered ALIVE all around her.
on a more serious note: a few days ago, in the birth certificate discussion, Horowitz said that even if Obama violated the constitution it might as well be silenced, because he has won the elections and exposing this would create unwanted chaos. Just a thought: what if the Feds had the same way of thinking and in their secret investigation they had come across damning evidence against Obama. One would think that following Horowitz, they should simply cover it up, shouldn't they?

568 Tricky Dick  Fri, Dec 12, 2008 9:35:21am

569 Mr. Sandman  Sat, Dec 13, 2008 1:49:45pm

There is no indication of any lie. He said that he personally did not meet with the governor about the senate seat. These are not "weasel words," because in the very same statement he also said that he's currently reviewing any contacts his staff may have had with the governor, and will wait until the review is complete before commenting further. So in other words, he explicitly acknowledged the possibility that his staff spoke with the governor about the seat after making the announcement that he did not personally. This acknowledgment refutes the notion that he was saying one thing and trying to make it sound like something broader. And of course everyone pretty much knew that Obama's staff had discussions with the governor's office about the senate seat; that much is almost a given in normal circumstances. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, unless there is evidence that Obama's staff took part in the illicit dealmaking. There is no evidence of that whatsoever.

The right wing obsession with and quantum jumps to conclusions based on nothing in relation to this story amounts to Noah's flood in a teapot. Fitzgerald explicitly said from day one that there's no indication of wrongdoing on Obama's behalf.

570 Mr. Sandman  Sat, Dec 13, 2008 1:53:30pm

 Frank says:

This is Frank Zappa saying, Don't do speed. Speed turns you into your parents. -- this used to play OFTEN as a public service announcement(PSA) on radio station WHFS at 102.5 FM in bethesda,MD.USA during the early '70's. it was followed by a nearly inaudible whisper, "...but grass and acid are o.k.", which may have been frank, or one of the mothers.
