Rahm Emanuel Ducking Questions

Politics | Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 5:48:43 pm PST

Rahm Emanuel may not be guilty of anything, but good grief. Could he possibly seem any more guilty? Rahm ducks reporters’ questions on Blago.

President-elect Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, refused to take questions from reporters this morning about whether he was the Obama “advisor” named in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The complaint states Blagojevich wanted a promise of a high-level appointment or some other reward for Blagojevich in exchange for Blagojevich naming Obama’s friend Valerie Jarrett to replace him in the U.S. Senate.

Emanuel was uncharacteristically absent from Obama’s news conference this morning. He was spotted two hours later in the lobby of Chicago’s City Hall. He was there to listen to his two children performing in a concert with their school, Anshe Emet.

A Sun-Times reporter pressed him to comment about whether he was the emissary named in the criminal complaint.

“You’re wasting your time,” Emanuel said. “I’m not going to say a word to you. I’m going to do this with my children. Dont do that. I’m a father. I have two kids. I’m not going to do it.”

Asked, “Can’t you do both?” Emanuel replied, “I’m not as capable as you. I’m going to be a father. I’m allowed to be a father,” and he pushed the reporter’s digital recorder away.

An aside: I’m amused to see so many media reports using “Blago” instead of spelling out Rod Blagojevich’s full name. I suspect it’s because they don’t trust their journalism school grads to spell it correctly.

Hey all, sorry for the early OT, kind of a hit-and-run comment here.

I have a cash flow again, although not enough to re-establish my internet connection at home. So, I'm using my parents' new broadband connection for the moment.

I do still have my health. I'm also finding it amazingly comfortable to set the thermostat on 63 and dress in layers. Even in bed at night, I'm not cold at all.

And my sleep hours are finally shifting around. I actually got up at 8am today, after over two years of sleeping until noon, usually.

I have two job leads, one from my landlord, and another through my landlord's temp agency. The former is factory work within walking distance, the latter is fixing PC's in the next county. Oddly, I'm pulling for the former, but whichever one offers me a position first will be the one I take.

Last Friday, we lost one of my co-workers from my last job. She had liver cancer, and knew about it for just over three months, but was very particular about not spreading the word around. Consequently, hardly anybody knew how far along it was. The combination of her cancer and her heart problems was basically a death sentence for her; each one made treatment for the other impossible. I was thinking about calling her, and wondering how I would go about contacting her, two days before I heard about her passing. It's taught me a lesson I'll remember: Don't hide it, because others won't understand how badly the help is needed, when it's needed.

Other than that, well, time marches on.

9 MandyManners  Thu, Dec 11, 2008 5:53:21pm

Well, I don't blame him.

As a native Chicagoan, I can only smile when I see the "outrage" by the media over this issue. In my lifetime, I have seen three governors go to prison, along with a US Congessman, town mayors, County Supervisors, Sheriffs, and policemen without number. This has been going on since the days of Bathhouse John Coughlan and Hinky Dink McKenna. When a Secretary of State died, it was discovered he had millions of dollars in cash and checks for license plates stashed all over his residence in shoe boxes. One of the first Mayor Daley's closest political allies left an estate of over 6 million dollars, although as an alderman he never made more than 9,000 dollars a year. While "Pay For Play" might be a relatively new term, the culture is over a hundred years old. I left Illinois after the 1974 elections. When I went to my Chicago polling place, I noted that my father had already voted. He died in 1963. That was the final straw for me.

So do you think that the dems would attempt to either pull the plug or monitor for content on the internet? That would be a real kick to the head if they tried that.

There would be a revolt in this country the likes we've never seen. Even hard core Lefties would decry ANY censorship of the internet!

re: #8 victor_yugo

Good to have you back!

My concern with the idea that he's with his kids, so he should be left alone, is that it would allow for politicians to surround themselves with their families as a means to avoid ever answering any questions.

However- I also think the msm needs to learn some boundaries.

Having said that, if the answer was "no", Rahm could have easily said so while adding that was all he had to say on the subject and to leave him and his family be for the rest of the afternoon while they tried to do normal family holiday things.

From the way Blagojevich was dropping all those f-bombs you have to assume he was around people he knew very well. Even a bottom feeder like him cleans it up when they are around people they don't know very well. Could it be that it was the Obama camp who dropped a dime on Blagojevich to the Feds when he started running the BS about "whats in it for me?"

Sorry. I just don't see the upside for the Obama camp to do that. IF someone from the Obama camp was asked the "whats in it for me" question and didn't want to play ball, they would have just walked away. Going to the Feds and saying that a fellow Dem, and especially from HIS OWN STATE asked just doesn't compute with me.

Asked, “Can’t you do both?” Emanuel replied, “I’m not as capable as you. I’m going to be a father. I’m allowed to be a father,” and he pushed the reporter’s digital recorder away.

Ha! Emanuel's version of "just let me eat my waffle!" If there wasn't so much potential damage these people can do the the US, I'd be really loving the entertainment value of these elitist clowns.

* Am I on tape somewhere? Crap, what if they caught me saying "x,y,Z"
* What testimony does the Feds have and what is apt to come?
* Who's next in the barrel and what will they say?
* Etc, etc. etc.

There are some people who get a kick out of being as rude and crude as they can possibly be, and there are those who are so rude and crude they just don't notice how other people are reacting to them. I ran into one of the latter on the job four or five years ago. When we got out of the meeting, I asked my boss "Did he just say what I thought he just said?"

And he had. He apparently really didn't know any better. Could be this guy is the same way, but I agree that you wouldn't think that he would. Politicians tend to go too far the other way, so as to not possibly offend anyone with anything even taken out of context.

Levin: Democrats unlikely to accept deep UAW concessions

Sen. Carl Levin says he can’t see Democratic members of Congress accepting hard-line concessions some Republican senators want the UAW to accept as a condition of their support for a $14-billion rescue of Detroit’s automakers.

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker had put forward those specific demands – including requiring the automakers to reduce their indebtedness by two-thirds and the UAW to set wages no higher than those of foreign automakers with U.S. plants – as an alternative to the Democratic version of the rescue plan.

Well then, [expletive deleted] it, let them eat Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

General Motors Corporation (GM) Key Statistics

Market Cap (intraday): 2.52B
Total Cash (mrq): 15.90B
Total Debt (mrq): 45.16B

And we're supposed to throw another $15B down the hole without getting major concessions for providing the money?

An aside: I’m amused to see so many media reports using “Blago” instead of spelling out Rod Blagojevich’s full name. I suspect it’s because they don’t trust their journalism school grads to spell it correctly.

When I was in J-school, we automatically got a "D" for any story with a misspelled name. The theory was if you can't get that fact right, the rest of the story is suspect.

re: #8 victor_yugo

I lost my job 5 years ago after successfully climbing the corporate ladder for nearly 30 years. I thought I was set and one day the ladder disintegrated and I was unemployed for the first time in my life. I tried to replace that job and found I was at the age that no one wanted me, despite my knowledge and marketable skills. After 3 decades of building a career I was lost. One day I answered an ad in the paper for a job that was so outside my demographic it was ridiculous, and thought that, if I got it, it would be an interesting diversion until I found a "real job". I went to the interview not expecting to be hired and then was hired not expecting to stay. I've taken some sideways moves and then some vertical promotions and now 4 1/2 years later I have the absolute coolest job I can imagine and have never been happier. Along the way, I've learned a great deal about myself - most of it good.

During this sojourn, the Rolling Stones lyrics came to mind and still haunt me to this day: "You can't always get what you want. but if you try sometimes well you just might find you get what you need". That line has become almost a mantra.

Doors close and doors open and I hope that one soon opens for you. You're obviously keeping your chin up and maintaining a positive attitude and that, my friend, is the most important step you can take.

I wish you the best.

I hate to sound like I'm defending Rahmbo here, but quite frankly I'm taking his side on this incident. He may be a corrupt jerk and guilty as sin, but this jerk of a reporter was bugging him while he just wanted to be a dad and listen to his kids' concert. The way he was quoted he sounds a little incoherent, but I've been interviewed in the press and reporters nearly always do that. It sounds like he wanted to say something like "Leave me alone, bozo. This is dad time with my kids." That's close to what I would have told the cretin.

There have to be plenty of opportunities to question him about this without horning in on his family time. That's just craptastic on the part of the reporter. The kids shouldn't have to deal with this excrement, no matter who their daddy is.

re: #63 OldScouter

OK, it's time for me to defend Chicago. True, we live in a Banana Republic, but as a native Chicagoan, I can tell you that this city is a very nice place to live. In fact, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Although this is really beginning to reek of coverup, I'll give Emanuel at least some props for telling the press to get lost when it comes to family events. I'm pretty certain the press can still do their job without tossing every shred of decorum to the winds.

It isn't as though there aren't plentiful opportunities to query him. He's typically quite prominently on display at any and all Obama meetings and press conferences. Skipping one to attend his kid's concert, and telling the press to get lost during a family event, doesn't really raise my eyebrows any.

Given his past availability, though, a more pronounced disappearing act would certainly raise questions about stonewalling that would demand answers.

After all, we've vocally denounced barfbag Fred Phelps for intruding on funerals to spray his excreable spittle on family members. It doesn't strike me as at all unreasonable to ask the press to show similar restraint.

I'm not comfortable defending Emanuel, but this behavior on the part of the press has bothered me for several years now, and has gotten worse rather than better. They can wait an hour for the event to end. They're all on a level playing field.

“You’re wasting your time,” Emanuel said. “I’m not going to say a word to you. I’m going to do this with my children. Dont do that. I’m a father. I have two kids. I’m not going to do it.”

To which he added: 'These questions aren't helping Michelle Obama's children.'

Too bad Sarah Palin didn't know that having children excuses you from having to answer questions you don't like. 'I'm sorry Katie; we can't discuss which periodicals I read. The MSM makes Piper cry.'

Asked, “Can’t you do both?” Emanuel replied, “I’m not as capable as you. I’m going to be a father. I’m allowed to be a father,” and he pushed the reporter’s digital recorder away.

I suppose it's better than, "Can't I just eat my waffles?"

D'oh. Of course someone thought of it before me (should've read all the comments first).

There, fixed it!

rahm has a close relationship w/ blago.
of course they discussed the empty senate seat. why wouldn't they?
obama had a preference for who blago should appoint.
rahm is scrambling now because the tone of these conversations is vulgar and ugly. and very possibly criminal.
the O camp is running for the hills and everyone knows why.

The name of Rahm's kids's school, by the way, "Anshe Emet", means "The People of Truth".

Unbelievable...I just wonder when the big, steaming turd on Obama is going to be dug up. Imagine him being hauled off to the cop shop for questioning before he's even taken office?

I'm giving odds of 5-1. Any takers?
