Krauthammer: Don’t Be Fooled By Obama’s Centrist Appointments

Charles Johnsonfollow me on twitter
Opinion • Fri Dec 12, 2008 at 9:58 am PST • Views: 238

Charles Krauthammer advises us not to be fooled by Barack Obama’s apparently centrist appointments, or by Robert Gates staying on as Defense Secretary; his socialist “progressive” agenda is still intact and moving forward: Obama’s Plan for a Domestic Transformation.

Obama was quite serious when he said he was going to change the world. And now he has a national crisis, a personal mandate, a pliant Congress, a desperate public — and, at his disposal, the greatest pot of money in galactic history. (I include here the extrasolar planets.)

It begins with a near $1 trillion stimulus package. This is where Obama will show himself ideologically. It is his one great opportunity to plant the seeds for everything he cares about: a new green economy, universal health care, a labor resurgence, government as benevolent private-sector “partner.” It is the community organizer’s ultimate dream.

Obama's Carbon Busters
A team of Al Gore's protégés takes over energy policy.

"... the moderate in this bunch may be Steven Chu, who has reportedly been tapped as Energy Secretary. Mr. Chu is the respected director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where the 1997 Nobel physics laureate has spent the last four years chasing a breakthrough in advanced biofuels, solar and other high-tech ventures.

Mr. Chu's special passion is climate change, and he favors putting a price on greenhouse emissions.

...

Carol Browner, the Al Gore protégé who ran the Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton years gets a promotion to "energy czar," a new job that Mr. Obama envisions as akin to National Security Advisor but for climate. "Czar" is an apt title for Ms. Browner, who built a reputation as the most left-leaning of Bill Clinton's advisers...
During her EPA salad days, she put out air-pollution standards that even the agency itself said would have no measurable impact on public health, purely as antibusiness punishment. She forced GE to dredge the Hudson River of PCBs that posed no threat to the public. Ms. Browner also rewrote a law called New Source Review so that power plants, refineries and other industries were always breaking the particulate emissions rules."

Read the whole thing.

31 Dave the.....  Fri, Dec 12, 2008 10:08:34am

One of the most powerful a President can do domestically, is quietly put people into lower profile positions.

I would not want to start up a business in the US in the next few years. How many small businessmen who voted for "change" last month will be harassed by over zealous ADA enforcers. Or will get sued by lawyers who caught on to the "your-employees-were-forced-to-work-off-the-clock" lawsuit scam.

And the neo-pagen earth worshipers controlling environmental regulation.

32 scottishbuzzsaw  Fri, Dec 12, 2008 10:08:49am
Ironically, when the economy tanked in mid-September, it was assumed that both presidential candidates could simply forget about their domestic agendas because with $700 billion drained by financial system rescues, not a penny would be left to spend on anything else.

On the contrary. With the country clamoring for action and with all psychological barriers to government intervention obliterated (by the conservative party, no less), the stage is set for a young, ambitious, supremely confident president -- who sees himself as a world-historical figure before even having been sworn in -- to begin a restructuring of the American economy and the forging of a new relationship between government and people.

Don't be fooled by Bob Gates staying on. Obama didn't get elected to manage Afghanistan. He intends to transform America. And he has the money, the mandate and the moxie to go for it.

I'd like to believe that the essential character of America will survive the next four years, but it's becoming harder to do so.

Here's the relevant snip from the AP article on Chu:

Steven Chu, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who is President-elect Barack Obama's choice for energy secretary, has been a vocal advocate for more research into alternative energy, arguing that a shift away from fossil fuels is essential to combat global warming.

Chu, a Chinese-American who currently is director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, has in recent years campaigned to bring together a cross-section of scientific disciplines to find ways to counter climate change.

Since 2004, Chu has been director of the Berkeley lab, the oldest of the Energy Department's national laboratories, with its 4,000 employees and a budget of $650 million.

...A few years ago he was one of six Nobel Prize-winning scientists who expressed their concern about global warming by sitting against and climbing into a massive tree on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley for a photograph that appeared in a special environmental issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

The first hint came yesterday, when Obama claimed, "If we want to overcome our economic challenges, we must also finally address our health care challenge" -- the perfect non sequitur that gives carte blanche to whatever health-care reform and spending the Obama team dreams up. It is the community organizer's ultimate dream.

the perfect non sequitur - Yep. What's another few hundred billion?
Some for this..
Some for that..

Caroline Glick warns Israel about Obama's "Centrists"

[Link: www.jpost.com...]

From the article:

Obama's team, like its supporters in the international foreign policy establishment, is dismayed by the Israeli opinion polls that show that Likud, led by Binyamin Netanyahu, is favored to win February 10's general elections by a wide margin.

In anticipation of Likud's expected electoral victory, they have been piling on against Netanyahu and the party. This was most recently evident at last week's Middle East policy conclave in Washington organized by the pro-Obama and post-Zionist Saban Middle East Forum at the Brookings Institute. There, both secretary of state-designate Hillary Clinton's surrogate, former president Bill Clinton, and current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice castigated Netanyahu's assertion that peace must be built from the bottom up through the liberalization of Palestinian society, rather than from the top down by giving land to terrorists.

Netanyahu foresees Palestinian liberalization coming through economic development in an "economic peace process."

Both the former US president and Rice attacked his plan, claiming that it is antithetical to the sacrosanct "two-state solution."

Unbelievable. We have lost our collective mind.

Why, Yes! In Camelot, CAMELOT! Kennedys Must Always Have A THRONE.

* * *
It's true! It's true! The crown has made it clear.
The climate must be perfect all the year.

A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there's a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.
The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Camelot, Camelot
That's how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

Camelot! Camelot!
I know it gives a person pause,
But in Camelot, Camelot
Those are the legal laws.
The snow may never slush upon the hillside.
By nine p.m. the moonlight must appear.
In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In Camelot.

Camelot - Monty Python

We're Knights of the Round Table.
We dance whene'er we're able.
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot.
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
Our shows are formidable,
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're opera mad in Camelot.
We sing from the diaphragm a lot.

In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable.
Between our quests we sequin vests and impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot.

I have to push the pram a lot.

The Obama team leaders are working a twelve year plan. The team includes news media, entertainment, the arts, the nonprofit sector, ethnic minority groups, liberals, young professionals, a good percentage of senior citizens, most of the academic community that includes the sciences, big dollar business leaders, Wall Street, public education and the unions, environmentalists, 85% of the State Department. I take a breath, but don't have the heart to continue. Congress, and a large percentage of the nation's judiciary. And the "Commissariat" is with team Obama.

Good afternoon/ morning everyone! That is a nice smooth transition to keep a Kennedy in the senate. She will be just as powerful as her uncle Ted. She is a liberal, but, as far as a Kennedy goes, remember she and her brother were raised far from the Kennedy's. Their mother kept them away from that side of the family as much as possible. Wether she will be better than Ted, who knows, but she cannot possibly be worse.

Good point. Onassis, the tough Greek shipping magnate, was Caroline's stepfather when Jackie O married him. Maybe Caroline has insights about shipping, combatting piracy in the high seas, etc., which the Admiral of Chappaquidick wouldn't know about since he turned sail, turned tail when bad things happened to his passengers.

Wasn't Caroline Kennedy on Obama's campaign team - the one that "spoiled" Hillary's dream? WTH was Hillary thinking when she took the Sec of State position? What kind of bargain did she make with the devil?
And btw, I hope someone, somewhere, shows Caroline the dedication of Obama's buddy Ayer's book Prarie Fire to Sirhan Sirhan. Not that it'd make her a more "independent" Senator or anything, but maybe she'd feel a TWINGE of guilt.

She's a lightweight who seized an easy way into prestige and power. She's gonna be Senator for life, based on sentiment and her aristocratic political pedigree.

Yes, she did before she married. Something to do with museums I think. Look, I have nothing against the woman personally - I gather that one advantage they see in her appointment is that they would have to move anyone from the NY House delegation over, thereby needing ANOTHER appt. Basically, the chessboard stays static.

Hubby is very disappointed - he REALLY liked working with Hillary and can't imagine that Kennedy would bring the same energy - and intellect - to the job. Hiillary was the quickest study he's ever met.

But hey, it's not a done deal yet.

A quick study maybe but no Social EQ. Made enemies every where she went. Claimed she was oblivious to her serial adulterer/rapist husband Bill Clinton. Completely alienated the people she was working with on health care.

I haven't posted in quite some time (for a variety of reasons not need mentioned). But this column by K. demands an opnion of me. I enjoy his columns and believe him to be on target the majority of the time.He has been privy to that which he covers for a very long time. That said,my last post was well before the election. Things went exactly as I had believed they would. This dismays me to no end. A self admitted "blank slate" was elected to the "highest office in the land(i.e.world)" and all we really know of him is his extremely thin record of public office and a group of associates that can only be described generously as "dubious". I had great fear for my country prior to this election and my fear has only intensified since the election. I do not believe that O will govern as a centrist, but will do all he can to incrementally push forward his socialist agenda, regardless of the cost fiscally and every other way of measuring cost to a society. I came to adulthood in time for the Carter years and recall with vivid clarity the situation as it was in the area of New York I was living in at the time.Things were not good. I expect to look back at what I have for decades considered the worst administration in my 50 year lifetime as being positively wonderful compared to the next 4 years. My hope is that my worst case scenario fear of living out the scenes portrayed in the middle/later chapters of Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" ( although I personaly am well prepared for such a thing). Anything is possible, but I do believe that the worst is yet to come and it ain't gonna be pretty.

re: #201 Opinionated

The present leadership in Israel (Likud, Labor, and Likudlabor known as Kadima) is exactly the type of individual that is warned against by H'S in The Shema. They put their faith in "The United States", "The Arabs", "The U.N", and other "other gods", and act exceptionally un-Jewishly. This is exactly why once "old Zionist guard" of Begin, Ben-Gurion, etc., who were personally secular, yet acted very Jewishly left the political scene, there was a sharp change in the benefits put upon Israel. When the "leadership" began acting in self-interest an against the warnings, Israel began to suffer. As we all know, with the present "post-Zionist", Anti-G-d, "leadership", Israel has been in a decline.

The Likud/Labor political mafia see the "old guard" in the "nationalists" and know that once they get into power, things will get better. Yet, they are so self-interested, and destined to maintain power, they see this as a threat. Not to the State, but to their hegemony of power over the Country. This is why they attack them with such fervor.

This is further evidenced by the fact that when trying to get elected, the Likud/Labor Mafia-ites speak like "nationalists", and make "nationalist" promises. Yet when in power, and no longer threatened, they act like the corrupt, self interested Erev Rav (I believe the term is) that they are.

I take a breath, but don't have the heart to continue. Congress, and a large percentage of the nation's judiciary. And the "Commissariat" is with team Obama.

Opposing the Obama team is us. We are right of center bloggers, right of center people, talk radio, Fox News. That's it.

So, barring an unforseen, monumental event to derail the Great Leap Forward, we are fighting to ameliorate the damage.

That's a daunting list and I hope we're not fighting the long defeat. The only thing that gives me hope is that, that same list has been arrayed against us for the last 30 years or so and there are still roughly half of us who haven't succumbed. Common sense has a great power, that can withstand even all the brainwashing machinery arrayed against it. We need to try to make it more infectious...

I just don't feel bound by the result of this election. The Constitution is not a suicide pact. We don't HAVE to follow the rest of the lemmings over the cliff. But there seems to be this attitude that we just have to sit back and LET Obama do whatever he wants to do.

Whoa there! You don't feel bound by result of this election? WTF?

Why should I? Socialism is anti-Constitutional and anti-Freedom. I can't help it if half the people are too goddamn stupid to see that.

We could all move to Alaska. Then seccede. Then we could drill in ANWAR. Just that alone would be worth the fight. Watch as the moonbats' heads explode :-)

Pretty easy place to defend too...

I see. You disagree with the result so you're free to ignore it.

We've been hearing exactly that from the other side for the past 8 years (with a word or two substituted).

You're usually much more rational than this. Please take a deep breath. And start working to convince the "stupid people" to see it in the next election.

I know this sounds crazy, as if you want something to work you don't hand it over to the Government, but Socialized medicine works in other countries so there is a possibility that it would be ok here.

I voted against this mishagaus, but now that I am stuck with it, i'm just Sitting, Waiting, Wishing.

And let's not forget Obama's got a possible SCOTUS issues. Wrotnowski's suit was discussed in conference today but no decision was made. Considering a similar lawsuit was in conference last Friday and decision made (but not released until the following Monday) leads me to believe Wrotnowski has the Connecticut SoS by the short hairs.

Caroline Kennedy for Hillary's senate seat? Did anyone hear her speech at the Convention? Is there any evidence that this woman has a brain?

I'm old enough to remember when she lost her father, as well as her uncle, her mother, her brother ... I feel bad for her. But I've heard nothing about her that even remotely qualifies her for public office.

But she's a Kennedy, a Kennedy! that's all the qualifacation she needs.

So, will HE still our souls? Will there be a Civilian National Security Force (CNSF) as he mentioned in Denver this summer? Will we be allowed to stay in our homes or will we be made to make room for the less fortunate amongst us? Why are we being made to wait for HIS presidency, the ONE we've been waiting for? It's just words, words written on an old piece of paper! Will those of us who didn't vote for HIM have to wear a dark start on our shirt fronts?

./snark off

OBTW: I do hope HE's successful because for him to fail would mean misery for the country at this time.

The preceding comments have in general understated the problems presented by BHO's willingness to spend. He will rely on the fear of the average Democrat of social and economic relations in America going south with the austerity measures that are necessary to reverse the impending corporate and government failures, which will prompt more spending on their parts. Meanwhile, Ayers and Alinsky (from his grave) will clap their hands and do a jig.

What is it that we don't understand about the Cloward-Pavin maneuver to bring about a dictatorship of the proletariat.

The only way out of this fiasco will be to declare bankruptcy, which will turn the world upside down on OUR heads. Forgiveness of debt was not favored for poor countries' problems; will it be tolerated for a nanosecond by Russia, China and Saudi Arabia?!
