I'm all in favor of cutting the little fish some slack if it helps net the big fish.

Sing, sing, Harris, or it's Sing-Sing.

Harris is probably made a deal in that he steps down and spills his guts. The question is who is he spilling his guts on?

I guess if you are an up and coming political star and you decide to win hearts and minds as a community organizer, then you may want to rethink doing that in Chicago.

(Only problem is, the rottenest gov'ts are where the organizer is needed most. Not much need for an organizer amongst the Amish.)

I wonder how the history books will record these 'historical' events . . .

So far, history has been changed to reflect the ideals of the left. So, I susopect that the whole mess will be blamed on the conservatives and the nefarious doings of the evil Bush regime. Either Obama will be the visti or the hero that transformed the nature of the nasty democratic republic of the early 21st century into the wonderful socialist model of peace, love, understanding (and poverty and death) that we will be enjoying.

IMHO, Emanuel probably didn't offer anything to Blago, so the most we could say about him and BHO with respect to BlagoGate is that they weren't exactly forthright with their "no contact" claim. Yep. They are as filthy as they come, and the Machine has been in business since the late 1920s. You can thank Anton Cermak for creating it, Kelly and Kennelly for maintaining it, and Boss Daley for growing it.

I'm thinking that there was a discussion of price and that they couldn't reach an agreement. Then Rahm, realizing the vulnerability of his position, dimed out Blago to the Feds before Blago had the chance to to the same to Rahm.

Also I think there was already a wiretap running that Rahm didn't know about which caught the whole thing- which is why Rahm is so quiet now...

As Gov. Rod Blagojevich was trying to pick Illinois' next U.S. senator, businessmen with ties to both the governor and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. discussed raising at least $1 million for Blagojevich's campaign as a way to encourage him to pick Jackson for the job, the Tribune has learned.

And Ed Morrisey of Hot Air has some interesting analysis on that.

Jesse Jackson, Jr insisted yesterday that he had no dirty hands in this scandal. His father, former presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson, told reporters that he didn’t act as a go-between for his son to Blagojevich. He may have told the truth, according to this report. It looks like the go-between was Jonathan Jackson, and the Saturday fundraiser was the down payment.

This may explain why Patrick Fitzgerald moved now. First, money did change hands — perhaps not explicitly, but the structure of the payoff for “Senate Candidate 5″ was supposed to be campaign contributions. After this down payment, Jackson could reasonably expect his appointment to follow shortly after the fundraiser. Fitzgerald had to be worried that Blagojevich could act any time.

It’s not just businessmen involved in this fundraising effort, either. One prominent Illinois official took part in this plan. Rajinder Bedi runs the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity’s Office of Trade and Investment and serves as a close aide to Blagojevich, according to the Tribune. Another businessman, Harish Bhatt, supposedly wields great influence in state politics. A prominent pharmacist, he allegedly installed the state regulator for pharmacists through Blagojevich in order to ensure a friendly ride, and who allegedly helped Bhatt fend off Medicaid fraud investigators.

Read it all.

For the benefit of those not familiar with Illinois politics, the reason this sort of thing happens here is because too much of the public not only tolerates but expects public corruption. What if turns out there were not one or two but dozens of Obama associations that, if they had been properly vetted by professional journalists, would have kept BHO from having a cakewalk to the White House?

What if turns out that the time spent dumpster diving in Wasilla would have been better spent checking out the dodgy associations that everyone knew Obama had?

The across the board excuse of the MSM will be that “we were so caught up in the leg tingling moment that we could not be objective.” That would simply not be a viable excuse from a professional journalist. It would even be a flimsy excuse from the maudlin No Bias No Spin crowd whose hands shake when they write “journalist” on their census forms. A harrowing, nearly seven-hour battle unfolded on that mountainside in Afghanistan's Nuristan province on April 6, as Walton, his team and a few dozen Afghan commandos they had trained took fire from all directions. Outnumbered, the Green Berets fought on even after half of them were wounded -- four critically -- and managed to subdue an estimated 150 to 200 insurgents, according to interviews with several team members and official citations.

Today, Walton and nine of his teammates from Operational Detachment Alpha 3336 of the 3rd Special Forces Group will receive the Silver Star for their heroism in that battle -- the highest number of such awards given to the elite troops for a single engagement since the Vietnam War.

Later in the article it's explained that 'subdue' means kill.

Not with reference to anything here, but plea bargaining is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to the criminal justice system in the US - if everyone arrested had to go to trial, we'd have to quadruple (at least) the courthouses, legal aid lawyers, judges, etc. etc.
Besides which, without plea baraganing, why would anyone testify against a "co-conspirator"? What would be in it for them? And you'd be AMAZED at how many folks are arrested with little more than help from co-conspirators "ratting out" their buddies!

Not with reference to anything here, but plea bargaining is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to the criminal justice system in the US - if everyone arrested had to go to trial, we'd have to quadruple (at least) the courthouses, legal aid lawyers, judges, etc. etc.
Besides which, without plea bargaining, why would anyone testify against a "co-conspirator"? What would be in it for them? And you'd be AMAZED at how many folks are arrested with little more than help from co-conspirators "ratting out" their buddies!

Hey Real, this was precisely my thinking the other day when I suggested O's lie was a indiscretion that didn't warrant risking the downside of stripping him from office. There is a huge downside to not plea bargaining but this is in principle looking the other way which I was downdinged for suggesting about O. I don't know if that makes any sense but there seems to be a double standard with those who insist on upholding the law yet accept plea bargaining.

From that link I posted above...

As Ford and Staff Sgt. John Wayne Walding returned fire, Walding was hit below his right knee. Ford turned and saw that the bullet "basically amputated his right leg right there on the battlefield."

Walding, of Groesbeck, Tex., recalled: "I literally grabbed my boot and put it in my crotch, then got the boot laces and tied it to my thigh, so it would not flop around. There was about two inches of meat holding my leg on." He put on a tourniquet, watching the blood flow out the stump to see when it was tight enough.

Then Walding tried to inject himself with morphine but accidentally used the wrong tip of the syringe and put the needle in this thumb, he later recalled. "My thumb felt great," he said wryly, noting that throughout the incident he never lost consciousness. "My name is John Wayne," he said.

I hereby withdraw my former observation that when you give your kid the middle name 'Wayne' that you've named a future serial killer.

With Harris out, and presumably cutting a deal in exchange for inside information and testimony, I wonder if Blago will take advantage of the lull in the media cycle tomorrow to slip out of office more or less quietly?

Or is it too late for him? As I've said before, I don't think this thing goes any higher than Blago, realistically. If that's the case, he's got nothing to offer, other than a fast, certain guilty plea in exchange for a slower, just as certain guilty verdict. Given the startling scope of the charges against him, 10 years would be a sweetheart deal.

What did his predecessor wind up with?

re: #142 turn

How do all the people here at LGF who lecture about "upholding the rule of law" (I'm not necessarily referring to you LH) square with this whole notion of not prosecuting someone to the fullest extent of what they may be guilty of? How is plea bargaining upholding the rule of law? How is this issue reconciled in the constitution, or is it?

Plea bargaining is part of the criminal justice system and it's a way of assuring convictions and time served. It's also a way of securing cooperation in further prosecutions and clearing the dockets.

Imagine if every crime had to be tried - the process would get bogged down, and speedy trial requirements would have to get thrown out the window.

When you let cases go to a jury, anything can happen. You can get nullification - OJ's murder trial for example; or the book (OJ's Nevada crime rap). Taking a plea deal eliminates the risk of not knowing - had OJ accepted the plea, he would have served less time than by letting it go to trial.

That said, I'm not a criminal defense lawyer, so those who have practiced in that area may offer more or different reasons...

A man goes to his doctor for his physical and gets sent to
the urologist as a precaution.

When he gets there, he discovers the urologist is a very
pretty female doctor.

The female doctor says, 'I'm going to check your prostate
today, but this new procedure is a little different from
what you are probably used to. I want you to lie on your right
side, bend your knees, then while I check your prostate, take a
deep breath and say, 99.

The guy obeys and says, 99! The doctor says, 'Great. Now turn

What's even better, is that they turned it into a special operations boat. Now they won't even be able to talk about what it does.

Reminds me of a joke:

A hot redhead comes out of the restroom and asks the bartender if the manager is available. The bartender says "he's not in, is there something I can do for you?" The redhead gets up real close to him and starts to run her hands through his hair, real sexy like.

She says "it's really kind of personal". The bartender says "I would be happy to take care of you" and winks at her. She rubs her hands across his face and puts a few fingers in his mouth for him to suck on.

Now the bartender is really hot and bothered. He asks "what exactly do you have in mind?". She leans in real close and whispers in his ear "the ladies room is out of toilet paper".

Many people wondered why Obama went to Chicago after Harvard. Guess now we know - such a fertile place for growth. So who bought him his Illinois senate seat, the necessary first step to his holy ascendence to the No. 1 Throne ?

455 Marvo76  Fri, Dec 12, 2008 12:29:40pm

this may be an off the wall conspiracy thought, but I wonder if Hillary and Bill (since getting beat) opened any of their old channels up to their stooges, and "helped" this along?

Maybe the leftist "press" is ok with these corrupt practices. All the states you name are corrupt machine welfare basketcases.

The press sure demanded an accounting of Sarah Palin's medical records in Wasilla, Alaska, when her Down Syndrome baby's birth was none of democrats' business.

The press was fine with corrupt police practices in Alaska, so long as it was against Republican Sarah Palin's family.

Here's another beef of mine to add to yours. Rahm is saying "You've put my home address on national television." He's beet red and pissed off.

He's getting death threats

They've intruded too much! Ya think? Where was all the outrage and being pissed when Sarah Palin's e-mails were all over the net and the news?

the worst part of having the exam is afterwards having to look myself in the mirror and with a straight face say "Yes, that was K-Y I just wiped outta my ass". I just turned 50 this year and the next thing is going to be the colonoscopy, cystoscope is nothing to look forward too either...

Yeah, but that test is the reason many are able to get early treatment. . .

The difference is that Palin--as a pro-life conservative--had it coming. Rahm, on the other hand, is a courageous soldier in the slow march to a Socialist Utopia. He shouldn't have to remind the MSM that some animals are more equal than others.

Yes, how funny Orwell selected dogs and pigs as MORE equal, hmmm

Rahm is a sore point with me. . .for personal reasons, suffice to say, I am marinally distressed by his distress. . .not very nice of me, but hey, I'm honest. . .

High on the Navy's list of priority problems is that of AntiSubmarine Warfare (ASW). The detection and localization of a submarine has proven to be a very difficult problem, indeed. The following methods are a few that have been advanced to help in this area.
1) The Physicist's Method: Irradiate the ocean with high-energy neutrons so that H2O becomes 4H2O. Submarines will become excessively buoyant and cannot submerge. Their disposition can then be undertaken with leisure.

2) The Chemist's Method: Place in the ocean large quantities of lysergic acid. The fish population becomes terrified at the prospect of loneliness and clusters about submarines in a frenzy of affection and admiration, thereby constricting the movement of submarines to a level of difficulty.

3) The Engineer's Method: Construct a large filter system having a mesh of about eight meters and pump ocean water through it at the rate of 15 million liters a day. This will recirculate the oceans daily. Because of the mesh filter, only submarines will be trapped.

4) The Mathematician's Method: Construct a large Klein bottle that can contain the necessary numbers of submarines. Note that the submarines are initially outside this bottle. However, the outside of a Klein bottle is also its inside. Therefore, the submarines are inside this bottle. (Two dimensional submarines may be disposed of by a suitable Mobius strip)

5) The Ballistician's Method: Equip all surface ASW ships with green paint. On detecting a submarine, spread the paint over the sea surface and remain quiet. The submarine rises to investigate, but its periscope becomes covered with green paint. It, therefore, believes itself to be underwater and continues to rise. When it reaches a convenient altitude, shoot it down with Anti-Aircraft Fire.

6) The Economist's Method: Induce the United States of America to use seawater rather than gold to support its currency. The French will immediately start to sequester it in their vaults in such quantities that by the time supply and demand curves cross, the submarines will either be (A) aground, or (B) locked up in French safe-deposit boxes.

I agree there's a double standard at work here; the hypocrisy reeks.

But - two wrongs don't make a right. "Well, it's OK because you did it first" doesn't make a bad act into a good act; it's still a bad act.

As the target of so much of this bad behavior in the past, Conservatives should be the first denouncing it, no matter who it happens to.

OK, not to be a smart ass, but how is Obama involved in this mess other then coming from the same corrupt state. I've been away from the news for a day or two, but last I heard the governor was cussing Obama for not doing "Pay to play"
There is no question someone in his staff would have talked to Blanko, but I thought all the news was that Obama would not go along with anything more then a thank you for considering his pick.

I guess we'll find out. They had Milorad Blagojevich wiretapped for at least 2 months. The tapings of what was said during these 2 months, ESPECIALLY before ANYONE knew about them, are critical, imho.

OK, fair enough. I just some of the talk about Obama stepping down and the like was based more on hope then facts so far. It's too juicy a story for the MSN to ignore if it goes anywhere.

But why haven't Obama alerted the FBI about being offered "pay to play?"

re: #454 snailracer
That would be the implication from all of this, that Obama's Illinois Senate seat and US Senate nomination were both authorized through the state Dem pay for play system.

Hilarious. I used to look at that cartoon and wonder who the hell was reading it.

475 avanti  Fri, Dec 12, 2008 8:55:32pm

If Obama met with Blanco, which he claims he did not, the tapes will tell the tale. Personally, even if he was thinking of paying to play, he's bright enough to not get involved with the Governor while he was under investigation.
He's avoided him in the last few years since he became a target. Whatever else you think of Obama, he's got great political radar.
