Yes, I know ALL about that stuff. My (then-teenage) daughter used to get on veggie kicks, load up the crisper ... then eat only about a quarter of it. Guess what Daddy got to do.

19 godfrey  Sat, Dec 13, 2008 5:00:57pm

He plays through changes beautifully. This is the most bluesy right hand I've seen from him, but I haven't seen much. I agree that his physical contortions seem to be in excess of the kind of melody he's playing, but who can presume to judge, really. Magnificent playing, but not memorable as a tune on first listening.

Rat sign vanishes from Blagojevich's alley
December 13, 2008 at 8:49 AM %P% Comments (32)

City officials say the most publicized rat warning sign in Chicago has vanished.

Earlier this week, Chicago Sun-Times photographer John White shot a picture of Gov. Rod Blagojevich ducking out of his Ravenswood Manor home to avoid passing through a news media gauntlet.

The photo showed Blagojevich next to a city sign that said, "Warning" and "Target Rats" with a picture of a rat inside a bull's-eye.

On Friday morning, Blagojevich left his house by the same back door, but the rat sign had been taken down, even though it was posted in a city-owned alley.

City officials say they suspect the governor or somebody close to him saw White's unflattering picture and yanked down the sign.

They plan to put up another sign

I SUSPECT A RODENT TOOK THE SIGN DOWN

OT: Brussels Journal Calls For White Separatism - Says Western Civilization Is Dying Of A Disease Affecting Only White People

Need I remind anyone that Brussels Journal is the anti-Jihad site from which the idea of aligning ourselves with the Vlaams Belang originally came.

Paul Belien the founder and editor of Brussels Journal is married to a high party official of the Vlaams Belang. And now we see, very clearly, that he is willing to publish articles calling for white separatism.

I saw that house on Cats 101 on Animal Planet channel. Husband and wife (no kids of course). I believe if memory serves correct, the owner said he's spent over $25,000 modifying the house for the cats, but the house has lost value because of it. my orange tabby is happy with a cardboard box he can hide in, price: nothing.

Carter Fellates Assad
In his meeting with Assad, Carter discussed prospects for peace in the Middle East.
He said Israel is sincere in wanting peace with Syria but stressed that no "genuine peace" could be achieved unless Israel withdrew from Arab territories it occupies in Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.
"You can't expect genuine peace between Israel and any of its neighbors until it has peace with all of its neighbors," he said.

"You Arabs make my leg tingle" Carter was overheard to whisper into Assad's ear.//

They are pretty clear that they don't consider Jews to be part of the European race...

The reason the great majority of Jews would not be in the Antipod community is not their race but their politics. There is a heavy statistical distribution of Jews on the political left, all the way to its extremes.

The Jewish tendency to want to repair the world runs counter to three principles I believe in, two of which all conservatives ought to believe in. First, the “repair” causes unintended damages worse than the flaw the repairers were trying to fix. Second, a conservative ought to be so busy with conserving what’s worth conserving that he can engage merely in tinkering with society’s edges but not in the wholesale remodeling that the majority of Jews seems to be fond of, from socialism to multiculturalism to Obama.

68 Pastorius  Sat, Dec 13, 2008 5:30:05pm

I love Keith Jarrett. The version of My Song on the My Song album, with Jan Garbarek on sax, is absolutely beautiful.

It is very hard to watch Jarrett play and not be distracted by his bizarre mannerisms. For anyone who is having trouble, just stop watching and listen.

His best album, in my opinion, is the Vienna Concert, which is an album of improvised solo piano music. It's amazing.

The Brussels Journal is the voice of Conservatism in Europe. It provides essential news and analysis covering the crisis of the European welfare systems and the breakdown of Europe's moral and legal order. TBJ brings significant news in English which cannot be found elsewhere. It also points to the many enclaves where the European spirit still lives and where Europeans are able and willing to defend liberty and democracy and to reaffirm their identity.

how much conserving can a conservative conserve if a conservative was conserving to conserve...

Here's more on Taki, who I personally think is Takuan:

Taki writes a column, the “High Life,” which has appeared in London’s The Spectator for the past twenty-five years. He writes also for National Review, the Sunday Times (London), Esquire, Vanity Fair, and Quest, among others. In 2002, Taki founded The American Conservative magazine with Pat Buchanan and Scott McConnell

The Paulosphere really ♥'s him as well.

Looking back, it's clear now the whole lot of them (Belien, Fjordman, GoV, etc) planned this blog strategy from early on. They started by publishing conservative sounding, anti-Jihadist op-eds, but hid the racist neo-nazi crap. Slowly, slowly, the racial references would creep in.

Remember Fjordmans long letters? Mostly good stuff, if a little pretentious. Then in discussion threads, after the 10th or 11th comment, he would let slip a small refernce to race or ethnicity. If anybody called him on it, he would change the topic. Weasel.

Then in the run up to the 2004 election, they let it all come out. I noticed the tie in to Ron Paul's campaign. Hands across the water, in a Nazi salute.

Sad to see some other bloggers got sucked into it (Atlas). Now they are too far gone to realize they've been had. Ego is a bitch.

Jesus' politics and social pronouncements were to the left of mainstream Judaism.
Jews are not accepted by these Eurofascists because they are...Jews. All of the other crap is just a rehash of the warmed-over anti-semitic bullshit.

Not a Safari problem, to clarify -- it's a background image that doesn't cover the page on larger monitors. You could fix it just by setting the background color to a similar dark color as the background image. It wouldn't look the greatest, but it would be readable.

In fact, Pamela (Atlas Shrugs), Baron, and Dymphna are all still official contributors at IBA. They are free to come on and dump on me any time they want to.

However, none of the three have written at IBA since about a month after this whole VB blowup.

For the first month after the shit hit the fan, they would write something, and I would reply with a post of my own, critiquing their ideas. After awhile, Baron and Dymphna put up a derogatory post about me, and I haven't heard from them since.

Speaking of, I'm trying to fulfill the last of some requested gifts from some kids - a little something my company does every year. The last two requested gifts on the list were from Joi - 5, and Susie - 4. Susie wanted a make-up Barbie, and I think I connected correctly with something called "Candy Glam Style Set." The make-up is flavored and edible.

Try as I might today, I simply can't find a Cinderella watch for Joi, and from some cursory searches on the innernets, I'm not sure such a thing exists. I'm heading to the Disney store at the MOA tomorrow, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Obama picks HUD Sec.

HUD nominee pioneered innovative affordable homes

Shaun Donovan, the New York official Barack Obama chose to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development, has hands-on experience with an issue important to the president-elect: affordable housing.

Shaun Donovan.

Prior to joining HUD, he worked at the Community Preservation Corporation (CPC) in New York City, a non-profit lender and developer of affordable housing. He also researched and wrote about housing policy at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University and worked as an architect in New York and Italy. He holds Masters degrees in Public Administration and Architecture from Harvard University.

ACORN AND HPD CELEBRATE REBIRTH OF PLEASANT EAST

ACORN Housing acquired the complex from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in December of 2004, and – with help from the City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the New York City Council, and The Community Preservation Corporation – made $8 million in improvements.

Well isn't that peachy. HUD will be run by a guy tied to ACORN, and the same thinking that started the damn, housing crisis and financial meltdown.

Satellite sucks harder than interactive cable. I don't need to watch these movies. Comcast is simply missing out on revenue when they hit they launch a service that sucks $#!+.

Case in point. I recently stayed at my brother's on my last visit home. It was a stormy night when freezing rain turned to snow. I called up Fight Club on a movie channel because, well, I couldn't figure out what else to do with a remote box the size of a f'ing phone book.

Just when it was getting to the ending; the big finish - you know the one - where all the buildings blow up? Signal goes out. Too much ice on the dish.

I found out later my brother keeps a spray bottle of window de-icer by the door for that purpose.

Thanks. Cable for me - and it's mostly for the high speed innernets. 15mbps.

On a muddy, shaded track between fertile farmlands, 30 men lounge in flip-flops and tattered camoflauge, displaying their beaten-up M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles.
They call themselves ilaga or "rats" in a local Philippines dialect. They're vigilantes: Christian farmers who have taken up arms to protect their land and families against Muslim rebels in this troubled corner of the southern Philippines.

Getting in late here but if it hasn't been said I assume the sign came down cause they caught the rat...

Seattle just past "asthetic" codes. So apartments blend in with existing structures. Fewer units, higher costs, etc... regulation already is half the cost of the average home around here according to the UW, so the further restrict the apartment supply. Then sit around and wonder where "affordable" housing went.

I'd show them, but would be considered impersonating a proctologist with out a license.

And by the way, what I really love about the Keith Jarrett tune that's the subject of this post is the stripped down simplicity of the melody. No worries, dude. I like the speed of my cable innernets, and my tv already give me too many channels as it is.

Cable ala carte would be perfect.

Except the bastards won't do that.

Nope, I live in Cook County, IL. Born and raised in Chicago, though I now live in a Near Suburb.

re: #273 Charles

And by the way, what I really love about the Keith Jarrett tune that's the subject of this post is the stripped down simplicity of the melody. It's almost a traditional folk tune, but some of the chord changes take it into very unexpected territory -- and the melody just flies through it all and takes you with it.

One of the classics of modern jazz/whatever.

When i went to the store earlier there was the brian seltzer version of jingle bells on the radio..I had never heard it before.. I was rocking out..
Of course i had to straighten up and look cool parking in front of the store..But..shhh..It was great fun...

I am in TN and have had Comcast for five years. When our cable was installed, they gave us Basic Cable. We didn't want Basic..we wanted bare minimum, which I dont think has a name, other than Less Than Basic. We finally had to go to their office. We were properly billed for the Less Than Basic, about 10.00 a month, but they never came and and unplugged whatever it is they plug in to get more channels. We called them several times, asking them to please unplug us, as we were only paying for Less Than Basic.
They never did. We still get Basic. LOL
They have come every time we have needed something, either a wiring problem or a modem, within two business days.

WE cancelled cable several weeks ago - but we still get it. i call and call and they tell me not to worry, that I'm not being charged for it. But that's not the point. I'm tired of finding the kids watching crap - especially the nasty sarcastic snide stuff that is directed at kids. We need a break. I guess I could unplug it.
I think their motive is to be able to say to advertisers - we have x number of eyeballs watching cable.

I have some relatives down there, so I can appreciate it.

They used to live just off a canyon, not 5 feet beyond their backyard was a 15 foot drop. If that's not bad enough, the house they lived in was built directly over a huge deposit or iron ore, so everytime lightning would come, it would go directly to their house (hey, the neighbors felt safe!).

The only reason I ask about "foreign country" stories is because those are my favorite stories they would always tell me. Their constant frustrations with people charging them "International Shipping", visiting other states and having people compliment them on their English when others learn they're from New Mexico, and so on.

347 zombie  Sun, Dec 14, 2008 12:32:44am

This is a totally un-PC question, but never was there a thread so appropriate to answer something I've always wondered:

What race is Keith Jarrett? In some photos he looks like a pale-skinned black guy, and in other photos he looks like a white guy with an afro. Not that it matters -- he's supremely talented either way -- I've just always been curious. If I had to bet, it'd be an Obama-esque "a little of both."

348 tchad  Sun, Dec 14, 2008 1:50:03am

What race is Keith Jarrett?

Hungarian mother and Scots-Irish father, or so I have read.

When I met him after a Miles Davis concert almost 40 years ago, he had an afro, and I assumed he was black, but light skinned.

He is the most creative piano player I have ever heard.
