LGF registration is now open for a limited time. Our standard boilerplate admonition:

Read all the rules.

Commit them to memory.

Don’t register with a proxy.

Don’t register with a throwaway email address.

Don’t register more than one account.

Don’t be a jerk.

Don’t be a troll.

Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 12/14/08 5:42:02 pm:

P.S. And don’t do this:

UPDATE at 12/14/08 6:20:56 pm:

Now closed with 62 hatchlings.

Watching the Bush shoe-ducking video, I was fascinated by his reaction. He actually smiles right after the first shoe. Then, he's watching and seems ready for the second one, and after it hits a Secret Service guy runs up to guard him and he signals that he's fine with a little hand gesture.

I just read the transcript of Geet Wilder's speech at GoV. Despite what Pamela reported earlier he does not call for outlawing Islam. I know he has said in the past that he wants to ban the Quran but that wasn't mentioned in his speech either. I don't agree with everything but it wasn't a bad speech. I guess I'm just getting wary of the actors involved in the anti-Jihad movement these days.

I'm a little surprised he didn't catch that second one and toss it back. Malaki stood there motionless on the first one (is that kind of weird - not even a flinch) and put out his hand on the second...

If Bush had dropped to the floor or started to run away, you can be sure it would have gotten a lot more intense.

But remember, it was a room full of people, who I'm sure had already been thoroughly searched. They couldn't just pull out the guns and start blasting away. I don't think the Secrets did so badly, and I'm sure Bush is fine with their reaction too, judging from his behavior.

That's why Bush kept motioning "sit down" and "disregard this, it was nothing," President Bush really has "the common touch" that others only strive to present as part of an image. Bush is a head of state and a guest in their country, in the Middle East guests are supposed to be protected, so, an assault or insult is a loss of honor for the host.

President Bush ducked and dodged quite well, but it seems the SS dropped the ball...aren't they trained to draw and fire in the blink of an eye?

It sounds to me like the USSS guys were kind of hidden. It's like the leaders thought a heavy protective presence would send the wrong message or something.

Seems like that would be the case anywhere, not just the Middle East.

President Bush handled it well, but that shoe could easily have had a small explosive device. I'm no expert on the Secret Services's training for this situation, but I am confident they practice drawing and firing their weapons faster than anyone on earth.

If I was head of that detail, I would be embarrased.

We hit the Germans hard enough so that two generations feared us. We hit the Japanese hard enough so that 3 generations feared us. The Russians hurt the Germans hard enough to still be feared. I wish that the cooperation until recent times by the Germans was a sign of the transformative nature of Democratic culture but that takes a long tie to work, maybe eventually it will. Carl von Clausewitz had it right, "War is an act of force intended to compel our enemy to do our will." We hit the Iraqis hard enough to coerce a brief compliance but not hard enough to instill real shock and awe. The transformative cultural change we hope for takes a long time and may not happen now that we are withdrawing.

Watching the Bush shoe-ducking video, I was fascinated by his reaction. He actually smiles right after the first shoe. Then, he's watching and seems ready for the second one, and after it hits a Secret Service guy runs up to guard him and he signals that he's fine with a little hand gesture.

Totally agree Charles, cool as a cucumber as usual. Reminds me of the time in South America somewhere when he had to "rescue" an agent from the crowd at the door preventing the agent from entering. (anyone remember that?) His comment after "If you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe" was priceless.

If terrorists can't scare him, flying footwear surely will not.

Rest assured, all those journalists were thoroughly screened before entering that conference room. No explosives, no weapons. The reason that asshat threw a shoe is that that is all he had. Oh, and in law enforcement you only use deadly force in response to a deadly force threat. A thrown shoe (that has been screened) does not qualify.

The "shoe bomb" was not just a one off by the incompetent Richard Reid. It is a real technique that has killed many people in Iraq, where AQI used it to bomb a crowd in at least one Shia mosque. Given that there are no reliable airport style portable puffer machines and the size of the crowd to be cleared I hope that at the least they all had to walk past the Yuppie Puppy. No harm no foul people say but we were damn lucky.

And if you don't think the people in that tiny room were thoroughly screened for such devices, you have a lot less faith in the US government than I do.

I kinda agree, but pretty much every assassination, plane bombing, etc. has been due to crappy or compromised security. Just being in the room was no reason for the Sec. Svc, to believe the guy was harmless. I was disappointed that the guy was able to throw the second shoe.

I wonder what the penalty is for such a thing in modern-day Iraq? He would've been executed under Saddam, obviously. In America he would have risked only a ticket and a psych exam.
What kind of (hopefully) happy medium exists over there?

Watching the Bush shoe-ducking video, I was fascinated by his reaction. He actually smiles right after the first shoe. Then, he's watching and seems ready for the second one, and after it hits a Secret Service guy runs up to guard him and he signals that he's fine with a little hand gesture.

Who was the Valley Girl announcer? Listen to how she says "video". The courageous Iraqi shoe thrower sounds like he's starting to cry when they drag him down.

I agree. Some of the lefties out there (you know who you are) are identifying with the shoe-thrower. But what I take away from this incident is: Bush handled it perfectly.

Or at least, really well.

He is much worse than just a RINO. He is a political opportunist that shows all the signs of Stockholm Syndrome in regard to Dems/Leftist politics. I have nothing but the deepest respect for his military service and POW status 30+ years ago, nothing but wholehearted contempt for his political views and legislation. McCain has done near irreparable harm to the Republican party and Conservative ideals.

I'd just like to point out a few discrepancies in the MSNBC film.

You'll notice that The President's head goes slightly back and to the left - twice. You'll also notice that the Shoeman is seen standing slightly off center from the President only after the first shoe sails overhead.

Then you notice that the President's head, after the first shoe, goes back up, and then back down, and then back up again. The second shoe is launched within two seconds of the first - before the rest of the press has ample time to react. Yet the President reacts before the first shoe arrives even halfway.

The President must have seen a second Shoeman on the Camera Bank towards the back. There cannot have been only one Shoeman. No Shoeman, no matter his skill at flinging shoes, is able to concurrently fling two shoes within two seconds, fast enough to hit the President should he not have ducked - slightly back and to the left - whilst shouting at the same time. Moreover, it is obvious that these are the heavy caliber types of shoes which require shoehorns with which to assist in the initial mounting stage. How did that single Shoeman accomplish the removal so fast in front of everyone else within mere seconds?

The answer is clear, my friends. There was a second Shoeman on the Camera Bank, behind the first shooter, slightly off center and to the left of the President of the United States!

My first thought when the so-called Iraqi journalist threw his shoes: Where were Al Gore or John Kerry at that exact moment? But then I realized that since the thrower didn't throw like a girl, it couldn't have been either of them...or any democrat for that matter...well, maybe Janet Reno.

254 Jimbo1970  Sun, Dec 14, 2008 9:31:06pm

re: #49 Charles

Bush is cool under pressure!

[Transcript]

PRESIDENT BUSH: Okay, everybody calm down for a minute. First of all thank you for apologizing on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn't bother me. And if you want some -- if you want the facts, it's a size 10 shoe that he threw. (Laughter.) Thank you for your concern, do not worry about it.

Q (As translated.) A question, Mr. Prime Minister and others, you all talked about the various gains that will come as a result of signing this agreement. But just quickly I have one question about the withdrawal of American forces. Is this going to be an accelerated process that will happen quickly and perhaps prematurely?

PRESIDENT BUSH: First of all, we're here at the Iraqi -- at the request of the Iraqi government. It's an elected government. There are certain benchmarks that will be met -- such as troops out of the cities by June of '09. And then there's a benchmark at the end of the agreement…

Q (Inaudible.)

PRESIDENT BUSH: So what if a guy threw a shoe at me?

PRESIDENT BUSH: No, I consider it a important step in -- on the road toward an Iraq that can sustain itself, govern itself and defend itself.
But let me talk about the guy throwing the shoe. It is one way to gain attention. It's like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It's like driving down the street and have people not gesturing with all five fingers. It's a way for people to, you know, draw -- I don't know what the guy's cause is. But one thing is for certain -- he caused you to ask me a question about it. I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it. These journalists here were very apologetic, they were -- said, this doesn't represent the Iraqi people. But that's what happens in free societies, where people try to draw attention to themselves. And so I guess he was effected, because he caused you to say something about it.

Now, in terms of the agreements, this is a major achievement. Is it the end? Absolutely not. There is more work to be done. And all this basically says is we made good progress and we'll continue to work together to achieve peace. That's what we want -- freedom and peace...

President Bush and Iraq Prime Minister Maliki Sign the Strategic Framework Agreement

[Iraqi blogger Nibras Kazimi on shoe incident]

I think quite a number of Iraqis were embarrassed by how their guest got treated today. Personally, I got angry. Very angry.

I will make a public promise: should I ever run into a certain reporter called Muntather al-Zaidi, presently of Al-Baghdadia TV, I will seriously consider…

wasn't there a tussle a few of years ago when bush was in south america or something? he was walking into some state function and the guards tried to prevent his secret service detail from following him. if i remember correctly there was a bit of a shoving match, and then bush turned around, grabbed his secret service guys, and yanked them free. bush sure had some good reflexes today. he ducked those shoes better then the mud that has been flung at him over the past 8 years.

263 RondinellaMamma  Mon, Dec 15, 2008 8:17:09am

Once again, the msm misses the point entirely...
This morning, all they can talk about is that some kook/journalist threw a shoe at Bush. None of them are asking why the same kook/journalist didn't ever try to throw something at Saddam Hussein.

It's kind of like liberals bashing Catholics; Catholics don't fight back (at least , they're not supposed to...)
Liberals never have the courage (I really wanted to write: 'gonads', but wasn't sure that was within LGF rules & regs) to bash Muslims.

yikes!..have I gone off on a tangent?

264 lanmaster  Tue, Dec 16, 2008 9:39:31am

Real quick ... on the reporting of the shoe fiasco ...

Did anyone notice that the MSM did not bother to show how Bush responded? His response was brilliant.
