As Dickens said: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

217 years ago today, Virginia ratified the Bill of Rights, officially making the Bill of Rights law.
Also, the electoral college meets today to vote on the President and Vice President. (U.S. Constitution Bill of Rights: December 15, 1791 - December 15, 2008?)

Chicago Trib forced the cutting short of the Chicago corruption investigation
The Real Story Behind the Rushed Blagojevich Bust: How the Feds Are Frustrated by Losing (Maybe) Half of Their Case
Cam Simpson reports on the Rod Blagojevich case in Chicago.
Conventional wisdom holds that U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald ordered the FBI to arrest Rod Blagojevich before sunrise Tuesday in order to stop a crime from being committed. That would have been the sale of the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
But the opposite is true: Members of Fitzgerald’s team are livid the scheme didn’t advance, at least for a little longer, according to some people close to Fitzgerald’s office. Why? Because had the plot unfolded, they might have had an opportunity most feds can only dream of: A chance to catch the sale of a Senate seat on tape, including the sellers and the buyers.
The precise timing of Tuesday’s dramatic, pre-dawn arrest was not dictated by Fitzgerald, nor was it dictated by the pace of Blagojevich’s alleged “crime spree.” It was dictated by the Chicago Tribune, according to people close to the investigation and a careful reading of the FBI’s affidavit in the case.
At Fitzgerald’s request, the paper had been holding back a story since October detailing how a confidante of Blagojevich was cooperating with his office.
Gerould Kern, the Tribune’s editor, said in a statement last week that these requests are granted in what he called isolated instances. “In each case, we strive to make the right decision as reporters and as citizens,” he said.
But editors decided to publish the story on Friday, Dec. 5, ending the Tribune’s own cooperation deal with the prosecutor.
Consider what had been dangling in front of FBI agents and federal prosecutors one day earlier.
Since at least late October, agents had been listening through their headphones to Blagojevich allegedly dream and scheme about a host of potential prizes he could win for the Senate seat, including everything from an ambassadorship to a corporate board slot for his wife. But on Thursday, Dec. 4, he was talking about cash. And a politician talking about trading an official act for cash is a very welcome sound to the ears of an eavesdropping fed. In addition, the Dec. 4 conversation appears to have been the first substantive chat about allegedly selling the seat since Nov. 13.
But on Dec. 4, according to the feds, here’s what they heard: Blagojevich told an adviser he was giving “greater consideration” to one pick for the Senate seat, named “Senate Candidate 5″ by the feds, because of that politician’s willingness to raise money. That man has since been identified as U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the Chicago Democrat affectionately known in his hometown as Triple J.
Jackson has denied any involvement in such schemes and says he never authorized anyone to deal in such a manner on his behalf. He also said Fitzgerald’s office informed him that he’s not a target in the investigation.
Perhaps even more encouraging to the feds listening in on Dec. 4 was what they knew about the first time such a deal was discussed. About a month earlier, Blagojevich was caught on tape describing an approach by an alleged associate of Jackson. Blagojevich’s now-infamous quote about that meeting had been tantalizing. “We were approached ‘pay to play.’ That, you know, he’d raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator.”

I've been thinking to myself- now why would the media cover this scandal? Seems to me that if Chicago is such a hotbed of corruption, which it is, why wouldn't the local media rise to their (supposedly) noble professional ideals and investigate and bring the corruption down? The only thing I can think of to explain it is an equal level of journalistic corruption in Chicago. Or perhaps journalistic corruption is more widespread....

Is almond wood a hard wood? Or is it burnt for fragrance? Many years ago, when I was a boy scout, we found a downed locustwood (IIRC) tree. Got a 2 man crosscut saw, and cut it up some (took forever); then split sections for firewood. Talk about being prepared-that night the temps dropped into the 30's, and we were bunking in 3 sided adirondack huts. That hardwood kept us semi-comfortable, and needed little replenishing.

almond is a hard wood, and it should be burned to cook BBQ.....like oak, pecan, etc..... burn gas to stay warm.

Wasn't intending to-you opened it-but (IIRC) the UN has (GASP) given permission for hitting them on the ground in Somalia. I am really angry today. The stupid Australian Labor government is finally going ahead with it's ideologically based Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme. This is going to cost jobs and put up electricity prices. Even with the compensation in the plan for pensioners and low-income wage earners it is still going to be a net loss for Australians.
Even if (and that's a huge IF) global warming is true AND CHINA AND INDIA DO NOT FOLLOW it is a waste of time and effort.
If Australia were to disappear tomorrow the growth of China IN NINE MONTHS would be enough to fill the gap left.
And all this in a time of economic downturn. Really smart!

You forget - CO2 is only evil when it's produced by someone that you can tax!
Studies show that the threat of anthropogenic global warming caused by CO2 could be completely eliminated if everyone who believed in it would simply stop exhaling.

I've seen it time and again - people spend much of their teen years trying to sneak drinks, and think they really like drinking.
Then, they turn 21, no one has a problem with them drinking (as long as they don't drive), and the thrill of drinking wears off.

I threw up a bit after taking one shot. I realized that I can't do shots of alcohol, only mixed drinks that I enjoy. First thing at the bar, my buddy goes up and says "Hey, this guy's turning 21, make him something to get messed up good." Next thing I notice, the bartender is getting a huge bottle of tequila and pouring it into the cup. I LOATHE tequila. I ended up drinking half the drink then gave it away. Ended up getting a kamikaze shot and a kamikaze drink and the shot didn't go so well. After that, I finished my drink and had like two more kamikaze drinks. I was buzzing but nothing spectacular.

Oh - you're 21 now, so we can tell you the secret ways of ordering fries at In 'N Out Burger:
Fries "Light" - Decreased cooking time for a softer product.
Fries "Well" - Increased cooking time for a crispier product.
Fries "No Boat" - Fries are placed directly onto the serving tray instead of the paper "boat".
"Animal Style" - Cheese, spread, and grilled onions.
Cheese fries - called fries with cheese

The very THOUGHT of the Blessed Beauty being born to humankind gives me goosebumps, Miz Sharm...
Recently, they did a person-on-the street survey, just to see how many American Idol contestants people could name (winners or not).
About 95% of the time, at least 1 of only 3 different names were recall: Kelly Clarkson, Sanjaya and William Hung.

re: #96 Crux Australis
Sorry for the rant.

It's a phychological pathology if you ask me. During WWII we never would have elected a President named Adolf Hisler--but that's basically what we're doing now. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, my ass. This is culture we're talking about. Our cuture is under seige. Before the PC movement people would have had the common sense to question how the cultural backgound of a candidate would effect his presidency. But that sensible approach as been done away with. Islam is at war with us, that much is clear, So instead of effectively figting back, we elect someone who probably has sympathies towards the people we are at war with because of his upbringing.

Andrew Lloyd Weber-so talented. I found 'Cats' a beautifully crafted work of art. 'Grizzabella' and 'Memory' were haunting-saw 'Cats' 3 times in London, and twice here in San Antonio-always a joy to view the performance.
But in the theme of the season, and somewhat classical, thought I'd offer up my own choice. Sang this so many times as soprano soloist when I was a kid-and I always teared up. But this version is from Hitman .

Some little known Chess facts- The London version differed from the Broadway version, and the production's lyrics to Bangkok are different from Murray Head's. Here's a crappy high school production of the original lyrics.
Also- I became quite well versed in Tim Rice's work before Disney released Aladin, and was completely able to pick out his lyrics from those of Alan Meneken(?). Not sure if I have the name right, I'm going off memory, but he was the lyricist Disney was using for a number of their films at the time, and he passed away while working on Aladin, so Tim Rice was brought in to complete the movie.

Update on the Blago fiasco:
1. Blago spent the weekend looking for a new attorney. Apparently he owes his current law form a whole lot of fees so they are pretty much not willing to represent him until the amount owed is paid up. Good luck with that. Blago spent the weekend taking to high profile Chicago attorney Ed Genson. Genson is reportedly trying to decide if he is going to represent Blago, which means he's trying to figure out if he will ever see a dime of fees.
2. The State legislature is having an emergency session today to try to figure out what to do. It is becoming very clear that AG Lisa Madigan's ploy to have Blago removed from office by the State Supreme Court for being unfit is going to go nowhere. Therefore, it will be up to the Legislature to impeach him. The Republican are hoping for a very drawn out affair as they want to see the Democrats slowly roast on the spit of scandal.
3. That leaves the question of what to do for a Senator? The Democrats do not want to have an open election cause then a Republican might win (Machine politics never quits in Illinois).
4. Blago is not going to resign today. Ever the shake down artist, he is trying to figure out how to sell his own seat for a walk.

In amongst all the doom and gloom, and the constant drone about vanishing species, is this!
1,000 species discovered over past decade in the Greater Mekong region...
SCIENTISTS have discovered more than 1000 species in Southeast Asia's Greater Mekong region in the past decade, including a spider as big as a dinner plate, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said.
A rat thought to have become extinct 11 million years ago and a cyanide-laced, shocking pink millipede were among creatures found in what the group called a "biological treasure trove".
The species were all found in the rainforests and wetlands along the Mekong River, which flows through Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.
"It doesn't get any better than this," Stuart Chapman, director of WWF's Greater Mekong Program, said.
"We thought discoveries of this scale were confined to the history books."
The WWF report, First Contact in the Greater Mekong, said that "between 1997 and 2007, at least 1068 have been officially described by science as being newly discovered species."
These included the world's largest huntsman spider, with a leg span of 30 centimetres, and the "startlingly" coloured "dragon millipede", which produces the deadly compound cyanide.
Next time you hear someone going on about how species are disappearing, mention this wonderful news.....

The Fed's are also looking at Patti Blagojevich's strange real estate deals:
Uncomfortable spotlight shone on Patti Blagojevich
Even before her voice was heard on covert recordings made by federal investigators, First Lady Patricia Blagojevich was neck-deep in the federal probe of her husband and his administration.
Once a residential real estate broker on the North Side, Patricia Blagojevich left that career this year amid scrutiny from the Tribune and federal agents who have for a year been examining whether clients hired her to win favor from her husband's administration.
But her decision to change careers didn't seem to slow the investigation, which sped up in recent weeks after federal agents tapped the Blagojevich's phones and caught the first lady joining her husband on calls in which he talked about how his authority to pick President-elect Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate could be leveraged to help find her a seat on paid corporate boards.
Before that, though, federal agents—following years of news coverage—were probing hundreds of thousands of dollars in commissions Patricia Blagojevich earned in previous years as a real estate broker for political supporters, fundraisers and state contractors.
This is called leverage. Mrs. Blgo is going to have a decision to make with the Fed's, testify or go to the joint.
It get's better:
A year ago, one real estate agent told the Tribune that FBI agents contacted her with questions about her involvement with Patricia Blagojevich in the 2004 sale of a $3.2 million Gold Coast home. The seller was an investment banker and contributor to the governor's campaign fund who hired the first lady as his second agent on the deal.
That was only the most recent example. Patricia Blagojevich had an eight-year working relationship with Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a onetime powerful developer and Blagojevich fundraiser who was found guilty this summer on influence-peddling charges.
A Tribune analysis this year found that Blagojevich's real estate company, River Realty, made more than $700,000 in commissions after her husband began raising money in 2000 for his first run for governor. Of those commissions, more than three-quarters came from clients with connections, the newspaper found.
This would be the same Tony Rezco who did a sweetheart land deal with The Messiah.

Rahm Emanuel talked with governor's office about who should fill Obama's Senate seat
Emanuel delivered a list of candidates who would be "acceptable" to Obama, the source said. On the list were Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett, Illinois Veterans Affairs director Tammy Duckworth, state Comptroller Dan Hynes and U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Chicago, the source said. All are Democrats.
Sometime after the election, Emanuel called Harris back to add the name of Democratic Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan to the approved list, the source said.

Very instructive: Obama doesn't publicly respond to JJ's insult about "cutting off his balls." No, he doesn't avenge himself with words, but with action. Often he repays favorable people with sweet words in public praise that cost him nothing, that actually make Obama look good. Case in point, of course, post-election "handling" of McCain.

A couple of questions for those more familiar with Illinois politics that I am:
1) Is Rahm Emanuel currently serving as an Illinois congressman?
2) If he is, and he resigns his seat to become BO's WH chief of staff does Blago get to appoint a replacement for him as well?
/Just wondering what else could possibly be on the tape that Emanuel might not have wanted the FBI to hear....

The WSJ is slamming the SEC over the Madoff ponzi scheme
SEC Had Chances for Years to Expose Madoff's Alleged Ponzi Scheme
An enforcement case 16 years ago gave the Securities and Exchange Commission its first shot at figuring out how Bernard Madoff could rack up favorable returns with such uncanny consistency. After that, it received repeated warnings from outside whistle-blowers and at least twice looked into Mr. Madoff's brokerage itself.
Each time, it blew its chance. It was only last week, when Mr. Madoff allegedly confessed to his sons that he was running what amounted to a "giant Ponzi scheme," that the apparent $50 billion fraud came to light.
"This is a debacle for the SEC," said Joel Seligman, an SEC historian and president of the University of Rochester in New York. "The commission has a lot to answer for."

Maybe he's an out of work industrial shredder repair man who wants to get back to work cleaning human bone and gristle out of a plastic shredder? Or a grave digger who liked the convenience of digging mass graves?
Or maybe, just maybe, he's some arrogant, impotent, needle-d*cked little schmuck who hasn't got the b*lls to do for himself what the United States military did for him and now he's too embarrassed to admit it., and too unable to just be a man, say "thank you" and take responsibility for maintaining the freedom that Amreican blood and treasure bought for him.

Has anyone yet mentioned they've arrested someone in the Woodburn bombing? No more news than that, although they have a fairly blurry photo of a suspect who may or may not be the guy they arrested.
The arrest was the result of an intensive round-the-clock investigation by an interagency task force comprised of federal, state, county, and city public safety agencies," Marion County Sheriff Russ Isham said.
Yeah, I'll bet it was intensive. They killed cops, and Woodburn is not so big that the police wouldn't have all known each other.

Obama just asked if we can send a man to the moon why can't we figure out a way to make clean burning coal.
Biden's apparent answer: He supports clean coal for China, but not for the United States."No coal plants here in America," he said. "Build them, if they're going to build them, over there. Make them clean."
"We’re not supporting clean coal," he said of himself and Obama. They do, on paper, support clean coal.
The answer seems to play into John McCain's case that Obama has been saying "no" to new sources of energy.
In the primary, Biden opposed Obama's push for clean coal, which is seen as a way of maintaining or expanding America's coal-burning power plants -- many of which are in rust belt swing states.
"I don't think there's much of a role for clean coal in energy independence, but I do think there's a significant role for clean coal in the bigger picture of climate change," he told Grist last year. "Clean-coal technology is not the route to go in the United States, because we have other, cleaner alternatives," he said, but added that America should push for a "fundamental change in technology" to clean up China's plants.
