Shocka! Islamic Law Biased Against Women

It may be hard to believe, but a British Muslim think tank has discovered that some Imams are biased against women.

A Muslim think tank has found some UK Imams discriminate against women when enforcing Islamic Sharia law.

Scholars at the Centre for Islamic Pluralism (CIP) interviewed 90 Muslims in London, the West Midlands, Lancashire and West Yorkshire. They found some women did not get fair hearings in forced marriage, arranged marriage and domestic violence matters.

Sharia law governs every aspect of a Muslim’s life, and Imams or scholars give out rulings on how to live by God’s wishes. Some mosques hold Sharia courts.

The CIP’s international director and its report’s author Dr Irfan Al-Alawi said women seeking help in situations like forced marriages often turned to Imams for a ruling on what to do. “Our research shows that domestic violence and forced marriages seem to be the dominant problems that women are facing and seeking Sharia rulings on. In every case it is a male who is the defendant coming from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. Some ladies have approached the Imams and the Imams… have encouraged the ladies to stay with their husband or with their in-laws, whereby they have a duty bound under the Sharia.”

He said he knew of a 15-year-old girl in Pakistan who was tricked into marriage over the telephone with a 40-year-old man from Sheffield, who had the mental age of a four-year-old child. “The Home Office refused to recognise the validity of the marriage but the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain accepted it,” said Dr Al-Alawi.

He said Imams should be working at the heart of their communities showing leadership, but some were failing to do so. He accused some Imams of “cashing in” on the Sharia system. On average it may cost someone £250 to go and get an Islamic divorce, he said.

What "Chicago Machine"?

Illinois Democrats Let Blagojevich Keep Naming Power

Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives postponed stripping Governor Rod Blagojevich’s power to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama that prosecutors say Blagojevich tried to sell.

The governor, a Chicago Democrat, retains authority to appoint Obama’s successor while the House pursues an impeachment process that may last weeks. Democratic lawmakers led by House Speaker Michael Madigan dropped plans late yesterday to schedule a special election to fill the post after failing to agree in a closed-door meeting, said Steve Brown, a Madigan aide.

Blagojevich, 52, has resisted demands he resign since his Dec. 9 arrest by the FBI and accusations he tried to auction Obama’s seat for personal gain and intimidate the Chicago Tribune newspaper into firing editorial writers. Republicans said Democrats, who hold a 67-51 majority in the chamber, seek to avoid a loss of the seat to the GOP in a special election.

“Shame on you,” Representative William Black, deputy leader of Republicans in the House, shouted during a debate in the state capitol building in Springfield. “We had an opportunity to limit the power of this governor and you refused.”

For automobiles, I have a vague memory that there's lots of copper involved and it was making the price uncompetitive for a mass produced product. Do you know if Honda is partnering with UTC on this?

They already did give the warning... the BBC link in the spinoffs that I read said that the bombs they placed in the department store were never rigged to blow, and that the group taking credit for it sent in a letter warning of the bomb threat, and making the demands.

Clearly they think the French will cave BEFORE a terrorist attack...

I'm curious to see the French's response to this.

You're right. I guess they figured France would cave easier than Spain.

I knew that without thinking.

Except for the "some" part. I was certain it was all.

I sure hope all that thinking didn't exhaust them because now they need to think about whether forcing women into head to toe sacks is discriminatory.

Multiculturalism, my foot.

The "melting pot" is racist to teach now, since it encourages assimilation into a pre-existing culture. Even suggesting that America has a culture is racist. Multicultural Balkanization is now the only "non-racist" form of immigrant expectations.

It is amazing that most supporters of multi-culturalism have not realized that it creates and reinforces balkinization. Add to this that most multi-culturalists consider themselves rational intellectuals - do they realize that we all descend from a single hominid tribe? "Culture" is a social construct that simultaneously includes and excludes. By definition, multi-culturalism creates exclusionary, insular groups who feel entitled to exclude others on a race/creed basis whereas melting pot works us back to a "one tribe" identity that is not racially exclusionary.

Hydrogen storage/ delivery is still a big issue.

Methanol I think is a better answer.

Hydrogen production is another problem. We currently get it from fossil fuels. Getting it from water takes at best the same amount of energy as we can get out of it, and we're no where near that now. A 2003 National Academy of Engineering said that large-scale production of hydrogen would require a significant number of nuclear power plants; nothing else would be competitive until a breakthrough occurs in electrolysis or solar power.

No but well worth doing lizardly research on. That is what we are supposed to be good at. This points out how big science and military technology often follows rather than leads commercial use. Agree with the sentiment but don't hold out hope.

I could see Charlie getting on the throne and then feeling morally compelled to assert power that UK monarchs technically have but have not used in modern times - all to take actions to save the subjects from themselves, like imposing global warming measures.

Thus would abruptly end the UK monarchy and deliver the citizens a constitution with enumerated inalienable rights.

Well, apparently, the Brits don't think so...seeing as how the UK permits Sharia courts to operate. (There was another recent report of a UK woman who was studying to become a doctor, but then her family back in Bangladesh found out. The father phoned and she went to Bangladesh for "a visit." The father immediately locked her in a room and said she was going to be married (she frantically emailed friends back in the UK to inform them of what was happening), and because of her repeated refusals of the marriage offer, the father then wanted to have her committed to a mental institution (she wasn't "obeying" his diktats, therefore she must be "insane.") Anyway, a Bangladesh court heard the case, and ruled against the father...(the woman is now back in Britain...but under the circumstances (given how the UK is), one wonders if a court in the UK would have arrived at the same conclusion or insisted on a forced marriage...)

Given that my mother has always maintained that Charles and Camilla look like horses, I'd favor putting the two of them out to pasture.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I eat a lot of vegetables, but I don't do anything exciting with them. You know, boil up a 1/2 pound of califlower and 1/2 pound of brussell sprouts, put in bowl, add non-fat, low calorie dressing of some kind, eat. Or making a vegetable soup. That's the extent of my vegetable cuisine.

I guess I was thinking about more exotic vegetables or interesting simple recipes.

Like in China where prisoners have to pay for the bullets that will kill them, the World also insists that Israel supply their enemies with cash.

Brown urges PM to end Gaza cash freeze

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's pressed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to lift constraints on the Palestinian economy.

Brown's office said on Tuesday that Brown asked Olmert to act during talks in London.

Israel is restricting cash shipments to Gaza banks in order to weaken Hamas, but Brown said the stance was damaging the wider Palestinian economy and harming prospects for peace.

On Monday, Brown met with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salaam Fayad. Palestinians say that cash shipments to Gaza are used by Fayad to pay government employees loyal to PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

Similarly, on Sunday, top international aid officials warned in a letter to Olmert that Israeli restrictions on cash shipments to Gaza banks were largely counterproductive and ultimately harm Palestinian moderates.

The letter, obtained by AP, was signed by World Bank President Robert B. Zoellick, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn and international Mideast envoy Tony Blair. It marked the highest-level intervention on the issue yet, following a growing cash crunch in Gaza.

The three also expressed concern about a decision by two Israeli banks to sever correspondent relationships with Palestinian counterparts.

That's what I am dealing with. I've mentioned it before, since I stopped smoking in Aug. I have been on a candy binge. I've slacked off a bit, but I am trying to come up with a more varied selection of food items to help satisfy me.

Of course, money is a big consideration.

Oh, and btw, we do have a constitution, written even, its called Bill of Rights 1689

Thing is, if consecutive Neostalinist (Labour) Goverments cut back on teaching history, people never even learn about it, and so haven't a clue about what to ask for or what to defend.
Thats what a cushy welfare state does to its citizens ...

Not really, seeing that our law is not codified, like that on the continent (thanks to Napoleon!), but works on precedent. Thus tradition is indeed a huge part of it - adn this goes back over 200 years.

Its these 'traditional' laws which are observed so much better than any of the codified modern stuff ...

BIAB - gotta feed Madame Dog!

Not to quibble, but I could see Charlie as seeing himself as more of a "world citizen" rather than an Englishman. I could see him trying to disrupt the idea of "tradition" on the basis of "others see it differently".

I suppose we have the same respect for tradition in Stare Decisis but we have seen judges throw out precedent in the name of a just outcome. So I could see Charlie trying the same.

It may be hard to believe, but a British Muslim think tank has discovered that some Imams are biased against women.

How hard did they have to think?

They reckon the imams are biased against women in dishing out the sharia law, but as we all know, it is the whole islamic religion and culture that treats women as third class citizens.

Next: Muslims encouraged by some Imams to kill infidels.

For centuries, jihad was embedded in the legal framework of Islamic law, or sharia, making it pretty much the prerogative of an Islamic ruler, that is, of the state. Sharia also imposed clear rules on jihad, prohibiting the slaughter of innocent civilians, for example. It is this legal framework that Al Qaeda has tossed aside in its glorification of jihad.
Perhaps Zawahiri's strongest argument against Imam is that he is a prisoner. Indeed, some passages in Imam's latest book seem made-to-order for intelligence agencies. For example, he writes, "Regardless of the legitimacy of their presence, the American forces did not kill a single Muslim in Saudi Arabia during their presence there after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990."
He does not mention Iraqi deaths caused by US forces during the war in Iraq. Instead, he focuses on Al Qaeda in Iraq, which he said "killed far more Iraqis than it killed Americans."

According to this article from the Toronto Sun:

For $580, the cemetery can put a flat marker there -- with her name, date of birth and death, and at least people can find her if they want to come to pay their respects. A cemetery employee said there is no problem if others want to place a flat memorial there but it would be removed if the family were to demand that.

From Spencer, JW:

..we now have enough to cover the cost of a marker as it was listed in the Toronto Sun, and then some. We will get the best marker that the total of the donations will cover.

We are doing this for Aqsa. If the family has the marker removed, as the Sun story hinted that they would, we will simply set it up somewhere else, as a monument to Aqsa and to victims of honor killing everywhere.

The Imams are showing leadership, just cause it's not the kind of pro women western leadership the British would like from them doesn't mean it's not leadership. In fact it's exactly the kind of 'leadership' Islam has suffered under for fourteen hundred years, yet feminists dare not call it patriarchy, only jaded western men fit that label/libel.

335 Zimriel  Tue, Dec 16, 2008 2:30:20pm

re: #8 Ojoe

Sharia law governs every aspect of a Muslim’s life, and Imams or scholars give out rulings on how to live by God’s wishes.

Minus the 10 Commandments.

How Strange.

No, that's unfair. The Ten Commandments does exist in Islam. The Hadith borrows a lot from Jewish law and the Torah, of course, but more importantly the Qur'an refers to it by way of "update". It's called the Hikmah, and exists in 17:22-39 and 6:151-3. Other suras attempt to delineate the practice of the Hikmah, which is where you get their focus on inheritance rights, amputations for stealing and so forth.

Anyway once you've started on the road to thinking of law as a direct divine injunction, rather than as jurisprudence built around moral precepts, something like Islam is bound to happen. Same applies to Calvinism. Or Christian Reconstructionism. Or those Ugandan terrorists, "movement to restore the ten commandments of God"...

I'd be inclined to support this project (at least morally) if those two weren't involved. I wonder if they're aware what it means, symbolically, that the marker is being placed in a Western country. Less cognitively-dissonant white-nationalists, like Brussels Journal and View From The Right, should support exporting the corpse back to its Islamic land of origin.

(Yes, that last sentence was disgusting. It was supposed to be. That's where the logic of racial purity based on land ends up.)
