Iraqi journalists vs. Arab journalists. Yes - the guy was an Iraqi journalist but worked for an Egyptian outfit. The Arab world is constantly complaining about the US humiliating them - the last 50 years have just been one big "panties on heads" experience from their warped perspective.

The grievance theater has a new act - shoe throwing.

'm far more concerned about the vile hatred they're exporting under the guise of a religion. I'm far more concerned about the money they pour in to terrorist groups. If this is their equivalent to the latest Celebrity news, then let them revel in it. It seems that insulting each other and assaulting each other is some kind of sick Middle Eastern sport.

Maybe next time we should just let them kill each other? Perhaps we should back out and let Iran and Iraq to go to war again?

I'm perpetually amazed at the warped reality they hold so dear...

I would hope Americans and the West at large would have a bit more heart than that.

Sure the militants, jihadis, and crazy sharia laws don't make it the most appealing place in the world -- which is why the West should be motivated twice as much to bring some semblance of modernity to the region.

From what I've been reading on Afghanistan, the biggest strategic problem in that country is the absolute backwardness of the country. Stepping into Afghanistan really is like stepping back in time a thousand years.

Not that Afghanistan is Arab, or oil rich, but the Arabs lucked out on being placed at the oil-producing center of the world, and have used that fact to spur hatred and fanaticism against the west. If they had not been in the situation that they are, I'd hope Americans would still care enough to export democracy.

Maybe we should negate the whole "shoe as insult" thing.

Make throwing a shoe a sign of adulation in our popular culture. Take it away as an insult and make them sethe more.

Maybe the "karma" ratings should be "shoes". And updings should be "throwing a shoe" and down dings be "stealing a shoe".

Thoughts?

re: #97 Ben Hur

We have zero obligation to these people.

We are not their former colonizers.

I think we have a Christian obligation to them, that now that we are there to not avert our eyes and tolerate the signs of collapse or demise. The UN peacekeepers in Rawanda saw the genocide unfolding, but the UN commanded the US commander to PULL OUT. He refused a direct order and stuck it out with a skeleton crew of soldiers. I saw him interviewed last week by Christianna Ammanpour - and he said he was forced to watched a genocide unfold - and it was so personally devastating for him that he has since considered suicide and is on medication. He said, they saved who they could, but he didn't do enough. it obviously haunts him.

Obviously liberal leadership sleep perfectly well during the commission of genocides, ala Rwanda, or Cambodia. Life is cheap, people are a cancer on the earth and are therefore either useful for political purposes and worth saving - or not.

Obviously, but shut it. Seriously! This disgusting need of most Westerners to add "gray areas" into everything, confuse the purpose, and accordingly cause us all to be handicapped is really getting on my nerves.

Sure every German during WW2 (including those in the U.S., Canada, England, etc.) weren't dirty Nazis, but that didn't mean that we didn't hate Nazis, and call Germans "Krauts"...and they deserved it. You know what...the world survived...and unlike the last so-many morally confused 60's generation, 1/2 assed wars...WE ACTUALLY WON.

Shoe-Thrower in Iraqi Military Custody, 'Suffering Broken Bones'

The journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush was handed over to the Iraqi military, an Iraqi official said, as hundreds took to the streets Tuesday for a second day demanding his release.

Muntadhar al-Zeidi suffered a broken arm and ribs after being struck by Iraqi security agents, his brother told AFP on Tuesday.

Durgham Zaidi was unable to say whether his brother had sustained the injuries while being overpowered during Sunday's protest against Bush's visit or while in custody later.

He's very lucky he wasn't shot dead on the spot.

BY THE WAY: To everyone in this thread that is suggesting that "all" Iraqis feel like throwing shoes at President Bush and the USA:

The people you see protesting in the streets in anger at the United States are the EXACT SAME PEOPLE you saw in the streets last week, marching in anger at the United States.

In Iraq, they're al-Sadr's friends—The very same people who empower the jihadi scum that's been trying to destabilize that country. And the Palestinians who march are the same ones that hated America last week. And the journalists of today, the same.

NONE of this is new, NONE of this is "genuine" outpouring of hatred at the United States. These protests are ALL very small, controlled groups of devoted terror-followers who have ALREADY been whipped into hatred against the U.S.

It'd be like sitting in England, looking at a BBC report about crime in some random big city, and thinking that all of America acts like that. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Please don't think that the photos you see are a representative sample of all Iraq's opinion. Nothing could be further from the truth.

That's because it's safe to be anti-American. Journalists are essentially cowards.

So we should be more concerned about these people that have vowed to kill us than we are about our own people? Is that what you're saying? Don't pull the game out that it is only the radical ones. that BS. It's all of them. If not, then why haven't the masses condemned the radicals? They haven't. They won't. They don't want to. They agree with the radicals.

I lived in Pakistan for several years. I've been to Afghanistan. We are not going to change those people. If the British couldn't change then after 200 years of colonization, what makes you think us being nice is going to impact them positively? Grow up.

Thoughts?

I was thinking yesterday that we could have some sort of "presidential shoe toss" (not at the president, however) ceremony at the Whitehouse every time America wins a war. Or we could coin a phrase "Have they tossed the shoe?" meaning have we soundly thrashed our foes? (I was thinking of something more colorful than that—pwnage expressed with invectives and explitives, but I don't wish to offend.)

Grow up.

Iunno,

The difference in our opinions here seems to me that you just feel they are all hopeless cases. They will always be the way they are, miserable, poor, angry, and misguided.

-- What just occured to me as I typed out the above paragraph is also that we are referring to different groups of people. I mean the people who ultimately get screwed over by the "oil barons" and religious clerics in the M.E. The farmers and serfs of society, so to speak.

I believe they can change. I think that if given access to schools where they could learn to read something other than the koran, where they can learn self-reliance instead of depending solely on the judgments of their tribal heads and imams, than there is hope for the future.

Now, I am not saying you are wrong. I think many of those in the M.E. are hopeless cases... many of them do hate the west and all it stands for, and many of them do join in the ecstasy and celebration after western innocents are slaughtered, and most of the coordinators and planners of these atrocities are NOT really poor, or miserable, but are actually rich, and fat off of corruption... Those are the ones that should all be damned.

All I am saying is, if we can change the system that leads to illiterate, uneducated populations, give their children some hope for an education, give their children some hope for a future... it need not always be the case.

Obviously I understand this is overly optimistic, but still... I just can't agree with just damning them all.

I feel like I kinda talked in circles a bit here, but hopefully I'm understood.

Just received the following email from Code Pink:

Join us!

Wednesday, December 17th, 5:00--6:30 PM

More Shoes for Bush!

Join us at the Federal Building at the southwest corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave., in solidarity with the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George W. Bush at a Baghdad press conference on Sunday. Peace activists will gather outside the Federal Building with shoes representing Iraqis and U.S. soldiers who have died since the Bush Administration's illegal invasion of Iraq.

We aim to show support for Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi, who hurled his shoes at President Bush while he spoke at the conference during his "surprise" visit to discuss the war. Al-Zaidi is currently being held by Iraqi police and questioned on his actions. The peace activists are calling on the Iraqi government to release al-Zaidi without charges. "It's outrageous that al-Zaidi could get two years in prison for insulting President Bush, when Bush is directly responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis and 4,200 U.S. troops, and 5 million displaced Iraqis," says Jodie Evans of CODEPINK. "The one who should be in jail is George Bush, and he should be charged with war crimes."

Bring shoes to label with the names of Iraqi dead, and shoes to put on poles as they are doing in Iraq. Let's stand in solidarity with the Iraqis who have suffered at the hands of George W. Bush. Let's stand in solidarity for the "widows and orphans" he has created.

For more information and to RSVP, contact Audrey.

If you can't make it, please sign this petition that CODEPINK D.C. will be delivering to the Iraqi embassy.

See you in action,
Jodie, Susan, Linda, Patricia, Janna, Paris, and Audrey

re: #129 snapped shot

NONE of this is new, NONE of this is "genuine" outpouring of hatred at the United States. These protests are ALL very small, controlled groups of devoted terror-followers who have ALREADY been whipped into hatred against the U.S.

It'd be like sitting in England, looking at a BBC report about crime in some random big city, and thinking that all of America acts like that. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Please don't think that the photos you see are a representative sample of all Iraq's opinion. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The media plays a role in perpetuating this. Abe Greenwald noticed yesterday that what reporters attribute to others, is often a reflection of their own feelings.

I mean we know that across the Arab/Muslim world George W. Bush is reviled. But how much emphasis is put on this?

WHEN PRESIDENT BUSH traveled to sub-Sahara Africa in February he was greeted by large and tumultuous crowds of admirers - which mystified many of his critics, who believe that the animosity toward his administration abroad is universal. But polling data from the Pew Foundation shows something different: Approval ratings for the United States exceed 80 percent in many African countries, some with large Muslim populations. In Darfur, many families name their newborn sons George Bush.

In Darfur, a cause of the Left, people feel that President Bush stood up for them and name their babies after him. And yet we know more about anti-Bush agitators in the Middle East who - most likely egged on by their governments - express their contempt for him.

In the former case President Bush is being judged (favorably) because of what he did; in the latter case he is being bashed because it serves the purposes of the tyrants that he's dissed. And our freedom loving media emphasizes the latter over the former. There's a real disconnect in terms of what passes for news these days.

AP staff stage 'byline strike'

Journalists and photographers at the US news agency the Associated Press (AP) are withholding their bylines to protest management's stance in contract talks, their union said.

"Staffers recognize the tough times, but they also understand that quality journalism at AP means attracting and retaining the best employees," Tony Winton, president of the News Media Guild, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Guild said AP reporters and photographers were withholding bylines and personal equipment "in protest over the news agency's proposals that would threaten job security, dramatically raise medical costs, and freeze wages."

Do not listen to know-nothings calling this man an "ingrate" for not appreciating American sacrifice. That's nonsense. We have invaded this country under false pretenses, killed hundreds of thousands, displaced millions, allowed 70% to live without access to water or electricity, and brought a once-great society to rubble. It is perfectly human to feel frustration and rage.

And if you refuse to open your mind enough to think of that, think about Baghdad on fire for the last month of your Presidency. Think about security gains lost. I'd ask you to think about the dead, but you won't, so think about your legacy.

I don't usually think calling the White House is worth a hill of beans, but give it a shot in this case. xxx-xxx-xxx is the White House switchboars, and the Iraqi Embassy is at xxx-xxx-xxx.

Wow now the number of "dead" people from the war in Iraq is 1.5 million? Code Pink must be seeing "Dead People."

Regardless of what the actual figure is -- what many journalists intentionally ignore is where the responsibility for that death toll is.

They incorrectly blame all of these deaths, directly and indirectly, on the American Forces. Journalists would have us believe that when an insurgent terrorist group slaughters an Iraqi village, the survivors and Iraqi's at large blame the American Forces, and see the Iraqi insurgent group as standing up for Iraq.

This is a complete inversion of the truth.

Iraqi's love the American troops serving there. The biggest problem has been the fact that Iraqi's are so used to decrepit dictatorships and vicious corruption that they could not believe Americans were decent human beings and not just another brutal force. As they saw more Americans risking their lives to protect Iraqi's, that was when the tide turned and Iraqi's rose up against the insurgents -- helping Americans and Iraqi forces to capture terrorists and wanted insurgents.

The British did that. India prospered and took capitalism to heart. they incorporated a lot of democracy and changed many of their systems and traditions. The Muslims in Pakistan had the exact same opportunity and rejected it. In EVERY instance, the Muslims have rejected what you are trying to offer them. Why beat a dead horse?

So what is your alternative... leave them alone and let them plot our destruction and brutalize their people?

Does it even occur to these Arab journalists that if they tried to throw a shoe at the president of whatever Arab country they would be arrested and tortured for "exercising their free speech" ? In fact in several Arab countries, they would be shot.

The current estimate is somehing like 100,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed in the war. The vast majority of those were killed by terrorist bombers & militia death squads, not by the US or Coalition forces. I need some input from 3 Wood OR a criminal prosecuting attorney.

I just got back from some food shopping. On the radio, while in the car, I hear "Feds may lower interest rate a half point in hopes that it will help banks free up some credit."

Now wait, I thought that was the reason for the bailouts. To free the banks from some bad investments so they would keep the credit pipes open.

Wasn't that one the mandates of the bailout? Who the fuck are these politicians trying to fool (rhetorical question)? Where is the fucking oversight (rhetorical question)?

Isn't it against the law to receive government mandated funds and not use them for what they were alloted for (rhetorical question)?

I know if I were getting government funds as a contractor, I had better be able to prove to the government that I have been using the funds for the purpose they were given (rhetorical question)?

Am I going nuts (not a rhetorical question)?

President George Washington bought a camel for his Mount Vernon plantation. Camels were (and are still today in Spanish speaking countries) popular Christmas animals because they transported the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem.

Don't be ridiculous. I'm not introducing a gray area into anything. Right is right and wrong is wrong.

To the contrary, you're the one introducing gray, if you're suggesting we should overlook the truth: "Yeah, yeah, obviously that's true, but screw that."

Why not simply call the people who support the shoe-flinger idiots? Why try to make sweeping (and incorrect) generalizations? It doesn't strengthen our position. It weakens it.

The London-based Arabic-language al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper reported Tuesday that Ali al-Sabari, an independent Iraqi parliament member, offered to purchase the shoes for $25,000, while a Saudi businessman offered some $10 million for the same pair of shoes.

Meanwhile, Attorney Firas al-Jabouri, an expert in internal law, announced Monday that he was establishing a legal committee of some 100 lawyers to defend al-Zeidi.

"We immediately formed a front of some 100 lawyers specializing in international law in order to maintain the safety of journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi and have him treated like a prisoner of war. We'll chase them everywhere and provide him with protection," he said."

I know that this is a "tiny minority" of Iraqis who probably support al-Sadr, or the former Baathists, or the Jihadis, or are just upset because their own people are such violent useless primitive fucks that they blow each other with regular abandon for the glory of their God whenever the chains are lifted for a second and they are given the chance.

However, is it just me or has several years of this crap shown us that Arab culture, just in general, is seriously deficient in so many moral things such as "gratitude", "honor", "decency", "respect", and other good things?

I'm really starting to wonder why we bother. I supported the Iraq war and I still do. But I'm starting to think that trying to make a democracy was a serious mistake. I know things are going well, but I'm kind of past the point where I'm fed up about all this bullshit. Next time, when some other Arabs start to complain about a dictator, I'm going to say: "So fucking what? You want us to go in and blow him up? Fine. We'll do that and then we'll also sit back and watch you fight it out. And if you get out of line, we'll fucking blow you up too. And it'll be a lot cheaper for us to go in every year or two and bomb the hell out of your country for sport than it will be to try to fix your own loathsome culture for you. And when you finally grow the fuck up, then we'll stop bombing you."

That's the deal we should give people from now on.

And I sure wish the President would give the bird to anyone from any other country on TV, live, in front of a global audience, as an outgoing gesture of what a lot of us who supported him feel like about what those others have to say.

I'm a girl, and I'm not as touchy-feely about listening to other people's whiny bullshit problems to the max like so many fucking diplomats are these days. Fuck them.

---Forgive me, folks, this is going to be long, but I couldn't resist---

Dear Ladies, allow me to say the following:

Join us!

No, I think not.

Wednesday, December 17th, 5:00--6:30 PM

Don't you have families to do Christmas shopping for?

More Shoes for Bush!

Join us at the Federal Building at the southwest corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave.,

A nice safe place to protest from. Very cushy. Will you be going to dinner afterward? At a nice place you will be certain you will not be abducted from? You know, before the war, Iraqi women didn't have that security.

in solidarity with the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George W. Bush at a Baghdad press conference on Sunday.

By the way, just in case you are confused, that's not journalism. Journalists throw hard questions. It's a lot harder to think of a hard question than to unlace.

Peace activists will gather outside the Federal Building with shoes representing Iraqis and U.S. soldiers who have died since the Bush Administration's illegal invasion of Iraq.

Did you get the permission of the family members, who might, you know, object to their loved one's being used for political purposes?

We aim to show support for Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi, who hurled his shoes at President Bush while he spoke at the conference during his "surprise" visit to discuss the war.

Discussion...assault...debate...assault... which one should we support?

Al-Zaidi is currently being held by Iraqi police and questioned on his actions.

If you threw things at people in this country, you could also be detained. That's because it's illegal to physically harm people, or attempt to do so.

The peace activists are calling on the Iraqi government to release al-Zaidi without charges.

Again, why should they? If he commited a crime, they need to look into it.

If al-Zaidi had insulted President Bush, he would be fine. He threw something physical at the President. That is an attempt to harm him.

"The one who should be in jail is George Bush, and he should be charged with war crimes."

You could actually try going to law school. Then you might not find the law so confusing.

Bring shoes to label with the names of Iraqi dead, and shoes to put on poles as they are doing in Iraq. Let's stand in solidarity with the Iraqis who have suffered at the hands of George W. Bush.

If you don't mind, I will stand in solidarity with the Iraqis who suffered at the hands of Saddam.

Let's stand in solidarity for the "widows and orphans" he has created.

Why did you put that in quotations? Either they are literal widows and orphans, or they are not. I suppose there is such a thing as a figurative orphan--in fact Saddam's jails created lots of them--but this indicates you are questioning their status.

For more information and to RSVP, contact Audrey.

Mind if I don't?

If you can't make it, please sign this petition that CODEPINK D.C. will be delivering to the Iraqi embassy.

Sorry, I opt out.

re: #266 Kenneth

Does it even occur to the Arab journalists the only reason this guy had the freedom to throw a shoe is because George W. Bush deposed a dictator and founded a liberal democracy in Iraq?

Does it even occur to these Arab journalists that if they tried to throw a shoe at the president of whatever Arab country they would be arrested and tortured for "exercising their free speech" ? In fact in several Arab countries, they would be shot.

I state the obvious when I point out that you are not really hearing from Arab journalists. There is no independent news organizations in countries run by dictators. The 'news' we are reading from organizations in Arab and muslim countries is in fact propaganda. Pure and simple.

Obama taps Chicago schools chief for education post

Duncan has headed the Chicago public school system -- the third-largest in the nation -- since 2001. Like Obama, he is a graduate of Harvard University.

Duncan also worked for six years with the Ariel Education Initiative, which tried to create educational opportunities for inner-city students on Chicago's South Side.

So how are Chicago's schools? Only the 3rd worst in America!

If Los Angeles is the worst school district in America, its East Coast cousin, New York City, is a close second. And the Chicago schools, while improving, are still recovering from the day in 1988 when William J. Bennett, secretary of education in the Reagan administration, pronounced them the “worst in the nation.”

The Chicagoization of America's schools

Arne Duncan is Bestest Buddies with the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

In fact, he worked with the Annenberg Challenge to program curriculum in Chicago Public Schools. From an official statement by the Annenberg Challenge:

The Challenge’s work is still carried on today through to the bipartisan Chicago Public Education Fund, which coordinates closely Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan and Mayor Daley…

Change!

Predictable. Code Pink has solidarity with the very thugs that would wrap them in burkas.

I have linkage on this scumbag in the next thread. He supports gay-segregated public schools at taxpayer expense, too.

Most of the pics are from phakistan, egypt, iran.
I am still looking for the huge - unstaged - Iraqi outpouring of support.

This 8 year orgy of Bush-hating is finally coming to it's inevitable end. The Left is using this shoe deal to get one more rage woody before they're back to protesting the displacement of some "rare" bird for a golf course. Fuck 'em.

342 CIA Reject  Tue, Dec 16, 2008 12:10:31pm

They're coming out of the woodwork to "support" this cretin because he did what he did and is still alive.

If he had thrown his shoes at Saddam and been summarily fed into the industrial shredder as a result you would not hear ONE PEEP out of these "journalists".

They are nobody and have nothing to say...

These guys don't see that the oil stranglehold the restive Middle East has on the world is ebbing, and once it's gone all they will have is shoe tossing. Their moment on the big stage is just about done.

I'm thinking Bush should invite the shoe thrower to tea, invite him to 'use words' and say what it is he is upset about - then say to the Iraqi people - THIS is what we have given you - the right to disagree with your government, and to say what it is without being killed.

If he has already been tortured by his countrymen, that hurts, but use it to say, this should not happen, he should have the right to speak (not throw shoes) :)

356 descolada9  Tue, Dec 16, 2008 3:30:31pm

I'm not sure whom I am more disappointed in, the Arab media or the American media. Sadly, both of them are following the same scripts they've been using for a while now. The whole shoe throwing thing just shows a level of juvenile immaturity that I've come to associate with too much of the Arab world, even though I know that the vast majority of Arabs and Muslems are nothing like this. Still, it seems like we are constantly witnessing their basket cases and their inability to function in a modern world.

As for our media, I haven't been surprised by their idiocy for a long time and I can barely even muster being annoyed by them anymore. It would be nice to see more people with a sense of maturity and a bit of outrage at an attempted assault of our sitting President on the news, though.

357 Cdat88  Tue, Dec 16, 2008 4:38:57pm

If this is the Arab worlds idea of a hero, a cockroach could not limbo under a bar set that low. I would have like to have seen that shoe throwing turd try that shit with Saddam. His ass would have been the main course at the next state dinner. I really have to remind myself that freedom for these folks was worth the price paid...

On a different note, drink and commenting makes for a whole new outlook on things...this may not be a shocker for some lizards. :)

I would very much like to ask the Iraqis who sympathize with this utterly disgusting puke if they would prefer an Uday Hussein regime.

My utter hatred for the Iraqi people must be tempered by the fact that there must be at least a small percentage of the population who realize that their future is much, much more promising had we not invaded their impotent nation.

 Frank says:

This is Frank Zappa saying, Don't do speed. Speed turns you into your parents. -- this used to play OFTEN as a public service announcement(PSA) on radio station WHFS at 102.5 FM in bethesda,MD.USA during the early '70's. it was followed by a nearly inaudible whisper, "...but grass and acid are o.k.", which may have been frank, or one of the mothers.
