Seems like I've seen this article somewhere. Hmmm, where was it? Oh yeah, in every magazine of every news stand for the past year.

16 Occasional Reader  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 9:22:15am

Well, here goes.

For once, I agree with Time's choice. At least by their own announced criterion for the nomination, which is supposed to be that the Man of the Year is the biggest "newsmaker" of the year.

Hard to argue that Obama wasn't the biggest name in news in 2008.

17 dgax65  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 9:22:25am

This is so out of character for Time. Why, they usually demonstrate such high journalistic standards. I'm shocked.

I honestly can't remember the last time I looked at a Time Magazine. They are as opinionated and vapid as any of the worst of them.
My son is after me to get satellite television as in a few weeks I will not get any reception. I honest feel there is little to watch anymore other that the History Channel. Enough already.

Well, for the reason I cited above, I disagree. They DID make a real choice this year (instead of their clumsy dodges in the past like "You" or "The Computer" or "The Planet"). And, again, I can't think of a person who "made" more news this year, at least domestically.

PENN'S TWO-FACED WITH GAYS

NOT all gays are gaga over Sean Penn's portrayal of homosexual martyr Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant's biopic "Milk."

In an Advocate.com article, writer James Kirchick slams Penn for his political leanings, arguing that any adulation he receives from the gay community should be tempered because of his affection for Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez and Cuban strongman Raul Castro.

Chávez and Castro are guilty of flagrant human-rights abuses, Kirchick writes: "Gay rights are human rights, as Milk said, and Penn discredits both when he rationalizes illiberal ideologies as 'anti-imperialist' and rushes to the defense of thugs who posture as victims of the West."

Penn has long been a supporter of the dictator duo. In this month's issue of The Nation, he lavishly praises both Chávez and Castro after paying them a recent visit. He asserts, for example, "It's true, Chávez may not be a good man. But he may well be a great one."

Kirchick's story includes a quote from Human Rights Foundation President Thor Halvorssen, who says: "That Sean Penn would be honored by anyone, let alone the gay community, for having stood by a dictator who put gays into concentration camps is mind-boggling."

Penn's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, tells Page Six: "Kirchick's commentary about Sean Penn's cover story neglects to include that Penn in fact addressed the issue of oppression toward homosexuals in Cuba in his full essay which was printed on the Huffington Post site on Dec. 1.

"The Nation printed an adapted excerpt only, but made it clear that the full article was on Huffington. James Kirchick didn't do his homework."

Yep, it's not a award given just for achievement or whatever, it's news worthy. Everyone from hero's to despots have been Man of the year in the past. If Ayer's or Wright had blown up Obama's campaign, they could be on the cover.

Godwin's Law itself can be abused, as a distraction or diversion, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. I hope you are correct but I am far too cynical to believe it. I think the media will police itself and quash dissenters because their allegiance is clearly not to reporting the news. They have a higher calling and that's to protect this guy.
I recall an incident early in Clinton's presidency when Britt Hume, working for ABC at the time, asked an uncomfortable question. Can't remember the question but I do remember Clinton getting all red faced and within a short amount of time, Britt was gone from ABC...to the benefit of Fox of course but nonetheless - lesson learned.

Oh not true. Biden has convinced the soon to retire Governor of Maryland to appoint Biden's longtime Chief of Staff, a guy who promises to finish the term and not run for the seat when it comes up in 2010. And by then Biden's own son Beau will be home from his stint in Iraq with the National Guard and it is expected he will run for his dad's old seat.
I am not disparaging Beau one bit, I'm sure he is a fine young American and will serve with honor. But you have to admit, putting a placeholder in the Senate seat instead of any other typical politician who would be interested in running for the seat is giving Biden's son an advantage. It would likely be tougher for him to win the Dem primary in 2010 if some other motivated politician were already sitting there.

I flipped a couple more pages and found a full page rant by Joel Klein calling John McClain a lier over every single point in his campaign and glorifying The One.

So imagine my total, utter, complete lack of surprise for this announcement.

So much for putting race behind us. BHO hasn't accomplished anything to date other than being the first black (sort of, kind of) elected to the presidency. Good enough reason for Time.

The "Real" men of the year, are rotating in and out of Iraq, U.S. Marines, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and the thousands of civilians who are risking their lives each day for freedom for us and the people of Iraq.

Only to have this Chicago thug, machine vote thief, and full raging commie Obama, spit on their graves and lives.

Screw Obama and all his commie traitor liberal democrat party thugs.

TFK - you da MAN! Semper Fi.

The worst thing about this premature deification by the toadying lickspittle at Time and the rest of the Lamestream Media is that Barry could very well turn out to be as naïve and incompetent as Jimmy Carter and the next generation will ask us "what the hell were you thinking?". Me? I'll probably say "don't blame me, I voted for Kang and Kodos".

195 NYCHardhat  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:05:57pm

It is sickening that the MSM bends over backwards for this man. I just can't watch anymore.

196 Land Shark  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:18:05pm

Why don't we just blow up the faces on Mt. Rushmore and replace them with a big one of the Obamessiah? As creepy as I find MObama, this fawning cult of personalty of someone with absolutely no acomplishments whatsoever even creepier.

Let's face it, Obama is in for a sweet ride from the media. These butt kissers just can't wait to sing his praises and cover up his failings. Which will make our alternative media and conservative websites even more important than they are now.

197 rexatosis  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:18:21pm

The fawning over Obama reminds me of the Peter Sellers' comedy "Being There."

198 J.S.  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:23:57pm

The local mid-day news here did a report today stating that the Obama mania has not subsided at all, in fact, they claim that the Obama fervor has increased....now there are stores dedicated solely to the selling of Obama memorabilia, and the deification of said "saint."

199 DrCruel  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:24:56pm

I wonder if this will go as well as the media's old love affair with Mussolini.

My jury will be out on the O man for a while. He's actually said and done a few things that I like. Nevertheless, that doesn't stop me giving him the photoshop treatment. Presenting the one.

A reminder, from the story about the choice:

“The person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse.”

That being said, I still don't think he was the best choice for president, but then, I don't think we had any good choices for president this time around. IMHO

Do I get racist person of the year for disagreeing with the 0?

Not yet, first they give a chance to recant in the reeducation camp sensitivity training.

OH. MY. GOD. Who wrote this ode to the Obamessiah? My glucose levels rose just reading this syrupy nonsense. OH. MY. GOD. I couldn't get through it all but the Obie Wan Kanobi reference. PLEEEAAASSEEE!

I went to my hair salon the other week and there was CCBHO on the cover of some magazine. I calmly walked to the mag and turned it over. Two of the gals watched me do it but dared not say a thing. Felt good.

Just surfing the Obama wave - easy choice and easy money for Time mag. Hitler, Stalin and the Ayatollah Khomeini have been featured. Vladimir Putin was last year. Remember when Time wanted to put Osama Bin Laden on the cover in 2001? Doubt that one would have sold very well -

208 Adrenalyn  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 12:58:45pm

this fawning over 0bama is almost as bad as the cult that uses Apple computers

it is a tool
and the people who use it flock to conventions like Trekkies

imagine if people were so excited about Ford Vs. Chevy
we'd have to make a club to deal with it

and call it something like "Nascar"

hey Vern, turn left
then left
then another left

People still read Time magazine? I don't even read it in the doctor's office.

A disturbance in the Force indeed. . .as someone who named one of her children after a Star Wars character and the other after a Star Trek. . .this is sheer torture. . .ack dear leader is so far from this it is not even funny. . .

Ahh, Slime Magazine- infamous for its use of the following phrase for an article on Begin

"Begin- rhymes with Fagin"

The real "shocka" would have been if they had used critical thought and named someone other than the one.

214 Rusty Bill  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 3:23:14pm

Aside from stealing an election (or two or three) through bald-faced lies and massive financial fraud (aided and abetted by the Democratic Party Propaganda Office, a.k.a. the so-called "mainstream media"), what has this person actually accomplished?

215 Paul  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 3:34:51pm

It's no surprise that Time picked Obama as person of the year, it picked Bill Clinton in 1992 and George Bush in 2000 and 2004. But the lick-spittle article that accompanies the Obama selection borders on parody. I didn't know whether to laugh or throw up (I finally chose the former).

It shouldn't be a surprise that Time compared Obama to Obi Wan, both are fictional characters, products of Hollywood.

220 Ty85719  Thu, Dec 18, 2008 9:43:55am

At this rate, by this time next year, a dead trout or a spork will grace the cover as Time Magazine's "person" of the year.
