Gay Activists Mad About Warren

US News | Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 5:00:51 pm PST

Barack Obama picked evangelical minister Rick Warren for the invocation at his inauguration, and gay activists are furious.

Barack Obama’s choice of a prominent evangelical minister to perform the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight.

Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church in southern California, opposes abortion rights but has taken more liberal stances on the government role in fighting poverty, and backed away from other evangelicals’ staunch support for economic conservatism. But it’s his support for the California constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that drew the most heated criticism from Democrats Wednesday.

“Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans,” the president of Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solomonese, wrote Obama Wednesday. “[W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.”

Hard to imagine what pastor would be acceptable to the gay community that wouldn't alienate many more millions of people.

Some days it feels like everything in America is a political war.

In order to placate the gays, Barney Frank still has time to to become a minister in the Universal Life Church. They even have free online ordination!

25 stevieray  Wed, Dec 17, 2008 5:11:41pm

I'm still wondering where the LGBT community got the idea Obama was their friend in the first place.

I guess they believed his lack of support was only a ruse to get votes... he'd surely reveal his true nature after the election.

Oops!

Warren's been friendly with Obama for a couple of years. I can't be the only one who remembers a bunch of pro-lifers who got POed at Warren for inviting Obama to a big AIDS event he had at Saddleback a few years ago.

Warren should say a prayer for the babies in Illinois who died because of Obama's vote on on the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

As it turns out - and as even Mr. Obama's campaign admitted Monday to the New York Sun - the National Right to Life Committee wasn't lying; Mr. Obama was. The specific difference cited by Mr. Obama in the CBN interview was that the Illinois bill didn't contain the federal legislation's language explicitly stating that it would not "undermine Roe vs. Wade." (This was not merely off-the-cuff, as the campaign had issued a written statement to CNN in June offering the same rationale.) Not only did the bill contain the exact provision from the federal bill, but Mr. Obama voted in favor of adding it as an amendment. After the state bill was changed to be almost identical to the unanimously passed federal law, Mr. Obama voted against it.

Dec 2006

[Link: www.time.com...]

Some time ago, Rick Warren, megapastor of the Saddleback Church in Orange County and author of the mega-seller The Purpose-Driven Life, along with his wife Kay, invited Democratic Sen. Barack Obama to speak today at the second annual AIDS conference at Warren's church. Other politicians were to participate, notably Sen. Sam Brownback, a born-again Christian turned conservative Catholic who, like Obama, may have presidential ambitions. But while Brownback was to speak to his natural constituency, Obama's participation is a divisive issue for one overriding reason: he is pro-choice.

That Warren should lend him a lectern has infuriated the pro-life activists and general hard-liners on the religious right. Conservative talk radio host Kevin McCullough wrote on his blog, "Why would Warren marry the moral equivalency of his pulpit — a sacred piece of honor in evangelical traditions — to the inhumane, sick and sinister evil that Obama has worked for as a legislator?" An open letter signed by Phyllis Schlafly, head of the conservative Eagle Forum, and 17 other less prominent figures, most from anti-abortion groups, contended "If Senator Obama cannot defend the most helpless citizens in our country, he has nothing to say to the AIDS crisis. You cannot fight one evil while justifying another." The din became sufficiently loud that Saddleback posted a response stressing Warren's disagreement with Obama on abortion but noting that "Obama was invited to share his views on AIDS, not abortion or any other issue."

Warren boosting Obama:

Obama and Brownback to Speak at Rick Warren AIDS Conference
The New York Times reports that Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Sam Brownback (R-KS) will speak at mega-church pastor Rick Warren's 2006 summit on AIDS and the church on Friday, December 1. A copy of the conference schedule is here.

The NYT asks: "Is [this] a step toward active support for Mr. Obama [by Rick Warren]?" I certainly don't have an answer to that question, but it did remind me of a pitch Warren made before the last presidential election. I don't believe Rick Warren ever explicitly endorsed George W. Bush, but he communicated his support for Bush nonetheless. Warren did so by arguing that there were "five non-negotiable issues" in the campaign. Here's an excerpt from Warren's pre-2004-election pitch to fellow Christians:

Obama boosting Warren:

In his first speech on the intersection of faith and politics as a presidential contender, Obama discussed how religion should inspire people across the Christian spectrum to unite in helping to eradicate social problems rather than divide them.

“I’m hopeful because I think there’s an awakening taking place in America,” said Obama on Saturday at the United Church of Christ’s 50th anniversary convention. “People are coming together around a simple truth – that we are all connected, that I am my brother’s keeper; I am my sister’s keeper.”

During his speech to a crowd of nearly 10,000 people, the senator, a member of Trinity UCC in Chicago, criticized division within the Church, but praised Christian leaders and groups that have worked together to remedy social problems.

“That’s why pastors, friends of mine like Rick Warren and T.D. Jakes and organizations like World Vision and Catholic Charities are wielding their enormous influence to confront poverty, HIV/AIDS, and the genocide in Darfur,” Obama said.

Whatever the hell isn't normal, they want us all to pretend that it is. Through the looking glass.

Like all Dems, the zerO counted the number of his social conservative voters (his African American base), vs the progressive activist secularist voters (his Koskidz/moonbat base) , and reshaped his image to pander to the majority. That's how he won first the primary and then the election, and it's how Dems make policy decisions most of the time, anyhow.

Once upon a time, many religious leaders took their beliefs seriously and courageously lived accordingly, regardless of the current political atmosphere, standing up to corrupt rulers and exposing them for what they truly stood for/were.

I guess that was before photo-ops were invented.

Most of the big socializing stuff has already happened or is sure to soon (banks, mortgage industry, soon the auto industry, with the big credit card companies to follow...). After the socialization of medicine is completed - as it will be - what big moves are left? Socialized dental and optical? Subsidized college tuition? Mere drops in the bucket, compared to the recent deluge.

NASCAR offices were unaffected.

One of my favorite jokes when I was a USMC instructor teaching Navy weapon systems to joint force personnel:

"You know what they say about submariners? 100 men go down, 50 couples come back up."

For two years I got huge laughs from that joke until a couple of people complained to the school commandant. I was admonished not to do gay jokes anymore.

New version:

"100 politically correct men go down. 100 politically correct men come back up."

That one got scattered guffaws, but mostly blank stares.

God I love a P.C. military.

my husband and I have in our immediate circle adamantly supported and voted for Obama. The phone and emails will start up in 4..3...2......
We tried convincing them using our best conservative logic and based on the fact that Obama was THE most liberal "present" voter in the Senate and apt to not follow this liberalism in all his decisions if he won the presidency...... that it was just to stay unopinioned purposefully so to enable him to appeal to the masses and a ploy to capture the office.....
I just didn't think it would be on dissing the gay issue.....

The Lesbian and Gay Band Association said it received the invitation from the Presidential Inaugural Committee.
“We are extremely pleased to announce that the Lesbian and Gay Band Association will be included as a marching contingent in the Inaugural Parade,” the association said on its Web site. “This is the first time that an LGBT group will be represented in a Presidential Inaugural Parade, truly our chance to make history.”

The association said it will select players from its member groups across the country. There are LGBT bands in 18 states plus the District of Columbia.

Nearly 1,400 bands applied to appear in the parade and fewer than 50 were selected.

Yeah, Obama's position on gay rights was almost indistinguishable from McCains, especially on the gay marriage issue. I don't think that the Left wing was really listening to him. They bought the unicorns and pixie dust, and assumed that he'd come out lockstep with the far Left once he's safely in the White House.

I can kind of understand that. After all, I believe that he's going to go hard Left myself. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I don't doubt that is true, since I know several gay men that have felt the same way, but ultimately embraced their attraction for the same sex and found true happiness. Some of them even married and fathered children (and the kids seem OK, at least the ones that I've met. the kids are all adults, BTW). I am happy for the guys and wish them only the best in their relationships. With some of them, their left-wing politics make me more uncomfortable than their homosexuality ever would, but then it is cool to hang with the right-wing, conservative gay gents as they really do exist!

Understand, Obama has lied to himself now for 20 years or more of the beauty of the commie way, he has self-lied himself into the commie conner, no longer can he escape, painted in he is, should he move away one inch, he knows not himself any longer and will have to deal with great self loathing.
What you see now from these wild eyed gays, is the same he will see himself, they are married by the law of the common lie.

Not surprisingly, I disagree. BO has tons of intellectual curiosity and has read everything from Mao to Mein Kempt, but that makes him neither a Commie or a Nazi. I'll give you that he's had a left of center education, and is liberal, but I don't expect him to govern from as far left as you fear.
Having said that, you never know with any politician.

If it were Ahmadinejad giving the prayer, Dailykos would be praising Obama for his tolerance.

Just dropped in on KOS, some are having a major hissy fit, but the good news is this post got some up dings.
(No, not my post, I got tired of the place in Nov., but it expresses my feelings) In general, they are not much happier about OB, then most on here.

"but maybe Obama was actually serious about with all that stuff about bringing people together and listening to those with different ideas. Having Warren lead the prayer may not be an endorsement of ideas, but an acknowledgment of them. Obama kept on Gates even though they disagree on some issues because Gates has needed knowledge. It's not like Warren will be bashing homosexuals in his prayer."

I really don't know how to take your post.

I think for political expediency, he realizes in order to be a successful president, he needs to at least appear to have common ground.

But facts are facts. The guy can only be judged by his actions, inaction, and the company he keeps.

Point taken, I may well be basing my opinions more on hope then hard data. I read his books, followed the way he ran his campaign, liked what I saw and got involved in politics for the first time in my life. The guy inspired me, and more then a few others. I can only hope that he can lead and is not a "empty suit" that gives a great speech as i often repeated.
If he's as shady as some suggest, I've been taken, but I'll wait to see how he governs. So far his cabinet picks and the rest have not been as left of center as I'd seen predicted, no sign of Ayers or Wright in any post.

Iran is set to become a nuclear nation. The structure in place to prevent proliferation has no balls. What do you think an Obama administration is going to do about it?

Surround himself with the best minds he can gather, listen to all of them and make decisions. Unlike some others, he does not seem to want to just hear his opinions reinforced, but encourages all the pros and cons.
You give the President way to much credit, they all listen to experts although even the experts can be wrong. I think the mistake Bush made on Iraq for example was to decide he would invade and had his staff sell the plan. I think some of the movement you are seeing already with Obama is do to some rethinking some of his grand vision in light of some good advice.
As I've said numerous times, the proof will be in the pudding, way to early to predict how he'll do. It's also moot point, since he won, all we can do is wish the best for our country 'and not hope for him, and us to fail.
We can spend the next few weeks arguing about how this new car will go down the road, but until he gets behind the wheel, we're just wasting bandwidth. He will surly fail if half the country fights his every move like we've done recently. Call him out if he swings too far to the left, cut him some slack if he stays toward the middle.
Like it or not, the world likes the guy and if he's smart he'll move fast to take advantage of it and some of it you may not like. For example, my gut tells me he'll open up a dialog with Cuba, lift the embargo and try to open up trade.
A Starbucks on every corner in Havana will spell the end of the Commies faster then the decades old embargo.
Even the younger Cuban American's are moving that way.

I know Rick Warren. I've met him twice, the second time quite informally while doing business. He's a great, back-slapping businessman and self-promoter. He is also a man of secrets, and not a good neighbor. He's no role model.

This choice says more about Rick Warren than Obama.

re: #8 rightymouse

I'm waiting for my gay friend to reply to my email about this. I suspect it's going to be a very interesting and convoluted reply since he voted for 'O'.

If your friend claims to be surprised, he shouldn't be -- since Obama's stated position has been that he opposes Same-Sex Marriage using the word "marriage," but supports Same-Sex Civil Union laws of some form or another. And SSCU without SSM is exactly what gays in California now have.

290 Throbert McGee  Thu, Dec 18, 2008 2:16:23am
it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight.

If Obama wants to avoid a fight with gay activists over the marriage issue, all he need do is announce that he intends to make passage of ENDA a top priority, or that he will finish what Bill Clinton started by ending the military ban on gays. Whether he actually succeeds in either endeavor is immaterial -- the important thing is that once ENDA or Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell is the new gay political obsession du jour, the marriage debate will be entirely forgotten by 90% of the very same gays who are treating it as a life-or-death issue today.

(ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, is supposed to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Among more right-leaning gays, there is a cynical suspicion that left-wing gay activists, who are outwardly the most vocal supporters of ENDA, don't even particularly want it to pass -- since activists would rather keep ENDA in perpetual play as a fundraising theme. Hence the left-wing strategy will forever be to insist on adding more radical provisions to ENDA anytime the current version seems too close to being passed.)

At wikipedia, there's a detailed breakdown (with an animated map, even!) of how state constitutions stand on legalized same-sex unions, as of post-November 2008. I strongly encourage bookmarking the wiki article to have as a reference the next time someone throws numbers at you.

The state constitutional amendments may be categorized as follows (alphabetical within each group):

A. Bans Same-Sex Marriage (SSM) under the name "marriage": 10 states

(Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee -- California being the only one of the 10 that DOES have civil union law already)

B. Bans SSM and also bans "same-sex civil unions" (SSCU) and other compromises that don't call it "marriage": 19 states

(Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin)

C. No constitutional bans on same-sex legal union laws, regardless of name: 20 states

(Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming. Of these CT, and MA already have SSM law, while VT already has SSCU)

D. Bans nothing at the constitutional level, but grants the state legislature power to enact bans: 1 state:

(Hawaii -- which currently has a legislative ban on SSM, but no legislation either against or for SSCU)

A + B + C + D = 50 states, and 4 states (CA, CT, MA, VT) already have either SSM or SSCU. Out of the remaining 46 states in which there are currently NO laws recognizing same-sex couplehood, "civil unions" remain non-banned (and thus a viable political option) in 30 states. But a lot of gay "leaders" would rather encourage self-martyred bitching about the hatefulness of SSM opponents, instead of constructively pursuing SSCU.

“[W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.”

OH YEAH?! Well, *I* "feel a deep level of disrespect" [sic] that you left out Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgendereds in the last sentence expressing the deep level of disrespect you feel at having someone with whom you disagree given a public forum, brother.

Sister.

Sister, sorry.

In any case, someone so clearly dismissive of LBTs (and BLTs as well in all likelihod) makes me feel a deep level of disrecpect that he's the President of Human Rights Campaign when he so clearly feels no deep level of disrespect at having ignored ¾ of the otherwise-sexually-empowered community.

re: #106 buzzsawmonkey

Allow me to observe, briefly, that the inclusion of both "bisexuals" and "transgenders" under the "gay and lesbian" umbrella is highly destructive to the so-called "gay identity." LGBT activists include these categories in order to swell their numbers, but both bisexual and transgender people utterly undercut the foundation upon which gay and lesbian identity is based.

Gay/Lesbian identity, in its current political form, is predicated on the article of faith that one cannot choose one's sexual orientation, but that this is hard-wired either from birth or shortly thereafter. The very existence of "bisexuals"--people who are attracted to both sexes--negates this, for these are people who by definition can choose, of their own volition, which gender they will partner with.

First of all, the hard-wired "article of faith" isn't even universally accepted within the gay/lesbian community, let alone the sole predicate for its identity (whatever that means). And even if it was, the existence of bisexuals would no more undercut that argument than the existence of ambidextrous people undercuts the idea that most people are hard-wired to be either right or left handed. (Left-handed and ambidextrous kids used to be encouraged to use their right hand because that generally makes life easier. Don't know if that kind of intervention is still prevalent today but there's a parallel there...)

By the same token, the sad fiction of "transgender" is merely a means by which persons who are psychologically, for whatever reason, unable to accept and be at peace with their same-sex attraction can, through socially-approved self-mutilation become a "member" of the opposite sex. Just as ever-earlier viability of premature newborns undercuts the justification for abortion, the surgical mutilation of individuals in the service of "changing their sex" is antithetical to the notion of accepting one's same-sex attractions.

Transgender usually has nothing to do with sexual orientation but rather with the way some people feel within their own skin. Consequently, there are any number of transgender lesbians and gays. If you're actually interested in the facts about this rather complicated issue, this might help.

Sorry to drop this on a very dead thread but I see you got good marks for a comment that's based on obviously widespread misconceptions. Too bad.

re: #295 buzzsawmonkey

Interesting. I think that gender roles/identity is in general a good thing, but rigid enforcement of them is terrible.
That's, imo, just a recognition of trends that exist in reality. Men and women have differences, by and large, and so it is useful to train them & have them approach society & themselves differently.
But not having the characteristics of one's sex is very rarely if ever a moral failing, and making a person feel that way is terrible.
