Obama's Rick Warren Kerfuffle

Politics | Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 10:01:06 am PST

Barack Obama’s attempt to pander to evangelical social conservatives (or his attempt to “reach out” to them, depending on your point of view) has gotten him in trouble with gay rights groups, and today he’s doing damage control: Obama defends choice of evangelical pastor.

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama on Thursday defended his choice of a popular evangelical minister to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, rejecting criticism that it slights gays.

The selection of Pastor Rick Warren brought objections from gay rights advocates, who strongly supported Obama during the election campaign. The advocates are angry over Warren’s backing of a California ballot initiative banning gay marriage. That measure was approved by voters last month.

But Obama told reporters in Chicago that America needs to “come together,” even when there’s disagreement on social issues. “That dialogue is part of what my campaign is all about,” he said. Obama also said he’s known to be a “fierce advocate for equality” for gays and lesbians, and will remain so.

I'm no fan of Rick Warren. I think he has peddled his brand of Christianity into fame and fortune in an effort to pad his own pockets. I don't know what Obama was trying to do with this but he sure pissed off the kooks who elected him.

Kooks get pissed off. Can't avoid it. It is their reason for being.

87 solomonpanting  Thu, Dec 18, 2008 10:21:34am
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights organization, said Warren's opposition to gay marriage is a sign of intolerance.

Yesterday someone here said that the 90% of gays don't care what the gay rights groups have to say (or words to that effect). Also, I believe this person also said he was gay. I tend to believe him as it seems many, if not most, groups have been taken over by the more extreme elements. How many people does CAIR actually represent? How many women does NOW represent? The problem comes when these groups are afforded undue influence in our squeaky-wheel-gets-the-grease world.

I'm sure everyone already knows that I think most gay people (and all "gay activists") are insane, so I'm not going to comment on the thread. Instead, I'll just use the mention of Shangri-La as an excuse to link this somewhat jaw-dropping musical number from the 1973 version of Lost Horizon. (BTW, that's Michael York lip-synching and riding the bamboo merry-go-round about halfway through.)

P.S. "Riding the bamboo merry-go-round" is not a slang euphemism for some kind of kinky sexual practice -- Michael York and everyone else keeps their clothes on, even though it was the '70s.

Yesterday on local radio, I heard somebody referred to as, "an informed Obama voter." If I could have called in, I would have pointed out that the phrase is a logical impossibility. Any time the O was specific on the campaign trail, it was about a promise he could not possibly keep. And he was rarely specific enough to inform about otherwise. The press never turned over rock #1 to find out and inform any of us of who this man is.

Bottom line, there is no such thing as an, "informed Obama voter."

Hell’s Angels — Lithuanian Style:

U.S. and Afghan soldiers in Zabul Province give high marks to the Lithuanian Special Forces, who like to ride these captured Taliban motorbikes to sneak up on, and chase Taliban fighters. The “LithSof” are on their way to becoming living legends: Both Afghans and Americans report that the Taliban are afraid of the Lithuanians. Stories about them are filled with dangerous escapades and humor.

Americans say that the Lithuanians are sort of a weaponized version of Borat, who think nothing of sauntering around a base in nothing but flip-flops and underwear. “They look like mountain men. They never shave, sometimes don’t bathe, and often roll out the gate wearing nothing but body armor and weapons. Not even a t-shirt,” an American soldier told me. The Lithuanians may be a little bit nuts, but the Americans love to have them around because Lithuanians love to fight, and when you need backup, you can count on them. That contrasts starkly with many of the NATO “partners.” Maybe when your country spends almost a half-century with the Soviet boot on its neck, its first generation of free soldiers know what freedom is worth — and that you sometimes have to fight for it.

with bonus video tribute

Interesting to know a tiny country like Lithuania is kicking more Taliban & AQ butt that the Fwench.

Kind of a side topic but building on what I said earlier about everybody being offended by everybody else - I think a major contributor to that phenomenon is the emphasis on diversity...and the oft repeated statement that diversity is our strength. I respectfully and loudly disagree.....our strength is our unity, the things we have in common - and focusing on diversity...on the things that make us different is the antithesis of unity. We've come to the point where we mindlessly repeat the mantra of diversity without ever questioning it or reflecting on what it means. Diversity is a given....that's what makes us Americans for crying out loud. This is one of the most salient points about the greatness of America - the fact that it doesn't matter where you come from or what you look like - as long as you accept and embrace the idea of what America is, you're an American. Not many cultures can make that claim. Yet we've allowed one of the essential foundations of America to be turned into a concept that ultimately is dividing and balkanizing us. Sheesh.....stop the focus on emphasizing what makes us different and focus on what makes us united.........
Sorry for the rant and the off topic. I'll go sit down and be quiet now.....

I'll bet Obama isn't all that concerned about this. . .besides for the obvious reason that he already won the election.

He's smart enough to realize that no politician can appoint anyone these days, without offending some portion of their constituency. When a conservative picks someone, there are always cries of "that person isn't conservative enough", or from liberals "that person is too conservative". . .and conversely for liberal appointees.

It's especially true for the Democratic party, which has long tried to hold together blocs of voters with hugely disparate views on a variety of policies. Pretty much anyone Obama picks for anything is going to piss someone off. If I were him, I'd be tempted to say as much.

Saddleback's FAQs are creationist. According to Saddleback doctrine, Christianity depends on the one man / one woman origin story of Genesis:

Question: Why is it not OK for evolution to be part of God’s plan? I don’t understand what the problem is: couldn’t God have used the process of evolution as the way that he created the earth?

Answer: When I was a new believer in Christ, I had some very strong feelings about the issue of evolution. Much as you have expressed, I believed that evolution and the account of the Bible about creation could exist along side of each other very well. I just didn't see what the big argument was all about. I had some friends who had been studying the Bible much longer than I had who saw it differently. But they didn't push me or argue with me, they simply challenged me to take some time to look into the facts and study the issues carefully. I'll always appreciate them for that, because this was an issue that I had to really think through. Eventually, I came to the conclusion, through my study of the Bible and science, that the two positions of evolution and creation just could not fit together. There are some real problems with the idea that God created through evolution.

I would encourage you to take some time to study this issue. I found that, although I'd understood the science side of the equation, I needed to take some more time to read what the Bible really had to say about this subject. Not having taken the time to really read the Bible, I was very ignorant about what it had to say. Let me give you one example. I discovered that the problem of sin, as addressed in the Bible, was much more serious than I had previously thought. When I realized that the world was clearly a perfect place as God created it, and that this perfection was ruined by the sinful choice of Adam and Eve, it really started me thinking. Did the Bible teach evolution or did it teach the creation of a first man and woman named Adam and Eve? If we evolved, which human being would have made the choice that brought sin into this world? If Adam and Eve were just allegorical pictures, why did the New Testament place some much importance upon them as responsible and real individuals? Since God clearly says that it is our sin that brought death into our world, how could there have been death for billions of years before the arrival of the first man who sinned on the earth? As I asked questions about this issue and studied what the Bible had to say, I found it to be one of the greatest times of learning in my life as a new believer. My prayer is that you will have this same experience!

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Gen. 1:1

"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." John 1:3

If you want to study this further...
Here's a web site that you might want to check out: [Link: www.probe.org...] (One article that is especially thought provoking discusses "Darwin's Black Box").

Just a quick note. I didn't get a chance or even have the time to read all the comments above.

All I will say is this:

This is simply the fact of life that a party that dedicates itself to identity politics, social division, and opposition gets.

The Democrats have done nothing but pander to divisive group identity and opposition to Republicans so much that they have nothing left to use a foundation for any kind of coherent party principles or platform.

You can't govern on this kind of stuff. You can only hope to govern well on a solid set of principles. Look what happened when the Republicans abandoned their core principles. The Democrats did at one time have a set of core principles (not sure if I even remember what they were now haha...).

The Democrats made their bed, let them sleep in it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the kind of things they will have to deal with for the next 4 years at least. I for one will be glad to see them go down in flames trying to please all of their different groups while trying to govern.

(for some reason I am speaking today in cheesy metaphors...must be the lack of coffee).

It's unwise to challenge anyone to prove something that can only be shown after you die.

Awesome. up-ding.

Excellent point. Kinda let's you know where their priorities are, dosen't it?

The president-elect said a "wide range of viewpoints" will be presented during the inaugural ceremonies.

Wide range of viewpoints such that Obama is the Messiah, G-d, World Ruler, or an incredibly intelligent guy, just to name a few?

No matter who Our Messiah-King had chosen to give the invocation there would be people who find fault with it. All He is doing is showing how much of a lie is the mantra of His being The Uniter.

As to that, if he can get my head off my shoulders, he's welcome to it.

Uh Oh!
The Capitol Building is on fire!

Whatcha mean uh oh? Just means Reid and Pelosi can't screw up with more legislation for a time.

Maybe they shouldn't have kept the b.o. smelling public from the politicians after all.

> neither is his pandering to the obscurantist wing of the Christian right.

Oh for God's sake, he asked him to give the prayer before it starts. He didn't appoint him head of the civil rights division.

And the gay rights advocates are mad because Warren opposes something that 70% of californians oppose and so does Obama himself.

I mean, sheesh, what did gay marriage advocates think that he was going to do? "How dare you agree with me! You're out of here!"

All of these attacks on Warren and the mormons is just the crassest form of scapegoating. the reality is that gay advocates have not done the work needed to bring the people to the point that they would at least accept that laughable Cali Supreme Court ruling. And if you want to win the next fight, you need to stop denouncing your opponents and start converting some of them.

And, yes, that decision was laughable. The Cali Supreme Court said that they were so certain that being gay was equal to being straight that even though the civil union statute was equal, the separation stigmatized gay couples as lesser than straight ones. you got that? the state of california, according to their Supreme Court, cannot say "straight relationships are better than gay ones." They can't say "all things being equal, try to be with a member of the opposite sex." No, no, according to the Cali S.C., they are not allowed to say one is better than the other.

To only state their conclusion is to refute it as ridiculus. and to the credit of ordinary californians, they did refute it.

So please stop pretending there is anything extremist about Warren's position on the matter. If it is held by 70% of the people, it is by definition mainstream.

Btw, speaking of the inaugural will people please tell me we are not going to be inflicted with another maya angelou performance?

I know. So what? I'm arguing over giving Warren legitimacy, not power.

[snip: blah blah gay blah blah gay gay blah] And if you want to win the next fight, you need to stop denouncing your opponents and start converting some of them.

Also, I wasn't referring to gay rights, but obscurantism - that is, the pretence that a scientific consensus is invalid because it contradicts a faith claim (which is itself falsely pretended to be basic to all true forms of Christianity).

[blah blah gay blah gay gay blah] So please stop pretending there is anything extremist about Warren's position on the matter. If it is held by 70% of the people, it is by definition mainstream.

Also also, I never claimed Warren's position was extremist. In fact I specifically pointed out that extremism has a definition which does NOT include Warren. I just said Warren's position was untenable and unfit for Presidential legitimacy.

Strike three!

I've actually met Warren, while he was off-duty, while both of us were doing business. I wasn't all that impressed with him, mainly because it was the only way I could talk to him: He refueses to talk to the press.

I tend to think he did that by appearing at his forum. damage done. move on with your life.

All this gives him is spiritual legitimacy, which isn't really in dispute. love him or hate him on darwin, but on God, people see him as a legit minister. sorry.

he picked rick warren because that has better return for the O himself.
the handful of gays who oppose this are just going to have to suck it up.
get used to broken promises.

Funny, Obama said he was against gay marriage during the campaign, and then he said it should be up to the states.
And yet, still he won't receive the full wrath of the gay activists nor their supporters because he's a Leftist, and he's black.

They only like to attack white guys. Preferrably evangelicals or Mormons. You see, whether you agee on this issue or not it can't be the fault of blacks or hispanics because that's their constituency.

Of course it's hypocritical and dishonest but that's the way these radical groups work.

The homosexual marriage proponent's best argument seems to be, "How does two men or two women getting married hurt your marriage?" The heavily implied conclusion is that is doesn't.

Here is why it does hurt my marriage and all future marriages. It is the epitome of the dishonest scale. Stating that two men getting married is equal to a man and a woman getting married is false. Deciding it is true does not make it so.

For example; Deciding to give credit to uncreditworthy people doesn't make the uncreditworthy people equal. Declaring the uncreditworthy people equal with the creditworthy does not make it so. It is a dishonest scale declaring a lie to be the truth. All the creditworthy homebuyers have been damaged EACH time this fraud is perpetuated. Just because the damage wasn't IMMEDIATELY recognizable, didn't mean the damage wasn't immediate.

Anytime a lie is declared to be the truth it hurts everyone.
