On a serious note, the incessant "global warming" agenda is a bit annoying. Dr. Heidi Cullen needs to get laid or something.

The woman has a point. I have never seen the Weather Channel when they did not at some point work in weather. Oh they try to be subtle, but I am on to them.

There are those ads that the left is freaking over.

Burger King should know better than to show Europe and the third world is their true form: Actual peasants who in 2008 need to carry effen sticks on their heads to feed the fires to they can cook.

Not quite the socialist paradise.

3 years ago I was doing an explorers unit with my kids and I needed a picture of the Mayan headdress for my kids to make a copy of with brown paper and feathers. I found a picture on a website to look at.

Dude.

It was fine, at first, with pictures of the headdress, as well, oddly, of the double crown of the Egyptians. I was reading down the page, they were noting the similarities of the two headdresses, kept reading...

"Thus we see that both the Egyptians and the Mayan rulers were really aliens from outer space."

I hadn't had a laugh that good for a long time. Click.

It was Indiana Jones territory. The headdress was to hide the skull.

re: #60 Bubblehead II

Wonder if this much an effect on the weather predictions?

Magnetic Field Hole Could Cripple Communications

Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth's magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms.

/So much for the holes in the Ozone layers.

There have always been two very big holes in the ozone layer, over the north and south polar regions. This is because the Earth's magnetic field is not really spherical; it's actually a torus (like a thick glazed doughnut). The "doughnut holes" are over the poles. When solar wind activity increases, ionized particles hit those holes, and the ozone underneath (which is ionized to begin with) is accelerated in what's called "mean free path velocity" (how far and how fast it can go before hitting another molecule of air). The result is that a lot of ozone escapes into space (literally- the molecules are going fast enough that they more-or-less acheive orbital velocity). As a result, less ozone=bigger ozone holes at the poles. When the sun quiets down again, the rate of escape falls below the rate of replacement (from air being ionized at high altitudes, which is where ozone comes from to begin with) and the holes get smaller again.

The panic over CFCs and the ozone layer was set off in the Seventies (a high solar activity period) by research based on readings taken in the Antarctic. The scientists who took the readings observed the phenomenon correctly enough- the "ecologists" just drew an entirely wrong conclusion about why it was happening.

But in my experience, ecologists are some of the most scientifically ignorant people around. They base their conclusions on what they believe, rather than actual facts.

I can't wait to hear what they'll blame for this.

cheers

Looks like the fun n' games are far from over in Greece.

ATHENS, Greece – Masked youths set up burning barricades and threw fire bombs and chunks of marble at riot police Thursday, after a protest march erupted into new fighting that sent Christmas shoppers and panicked parents fleeing to safety.

Mothers snatched children from a carousel in the main square. Waiters stumbled from cafes choking on tear gas fired by police at rioters trying to burn the capital's Christmas tree, replaced just days ago after another tree was torched.

Some cultures are more into the lamburger than the hamburger. Variants of terrain, and all.

Not to mention that some isolated populations may yet be unfamiliar with such things as mustard, ketchup, sweet pickles, orange cheese slices, special sauce, and the like.

How could such backward cultures ever hope to ketchup to the West? Even if we mustard vast foreign aid resources on their behalf?

Counting cow flatulence would be a waste of time. We already know that cow flatulence releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere globally than the emissions of all vehicles that use petroleum engines.

That means that eating steak, and thereby reducing the cow population, is a great way to combat global warming! ;-)

OT, but hilarious:

My male took one of the cars in for service today. Our friend Charlie followed him over. This was a good thing, as my male managed to leave the house keys - and the key to my truck - at home.

Then, just as he was leaving the house, his phone rings from the place he's contracting at. They were having a fire drill today, and somehow or other, managed to trigger the entire fire suppression system. And nuke his servers in the process. And he can't get into the building because of the fire suppression system...

I've been laughing helplessly, as Charlie relays all of this to me, as a run up to letting me know that he's my chauffeur this evening.

re: #64 EmmmieG

I've had endless fun with the Ancient Astronauts crowd literally for decades. They never cease to come up with the most convoluted "explanations" for simple things.

I'm familiar with the headdresses you mentioned. I might note they also resemble the British Havelock sun shade worn by soldiers in Her Majesty's service in the tropics in the 19th Century. The French Legion Etrangere' adopted it as well. probably for the same reason the Egyptians and Mayans used it- to avoid sunstroke. (Building pyramids is hot work.)

Speaking of pyramids, I've seen that used as "evidence" of ET influence on both cultures. Not to mention the ziggurats of the ancient Sumerians. Of course, if any of the "cryptoarcheologists" would bother to spend five minutes with an architect or stonemason, they'd find out that if you want to build a really tall structure out of stone, it had better be both (a) mostly solid and (b) basically conical in shape with a fairly shallow slope. Otherwise, it'll collapse under its own weight almost before you're finished building it.

I remember one time watching a show about the "alien" influences on the pyramid-builders in Egypt and the Americas. The host was going on about how the "pyramid design suddenly appears out of nowhere in both cultures". I thought, "Yes, unless you count the Egyptian mastabas, the Mayan hill tombs, and the half-built pyramids in both areas that are still sitting there, incomplete, because their outer walls were at too steep an angle and they fell apart before they could be finished." That's an awful lot of "trial and error" for anyone being assisted by an advanced alien culture capable of interstellar travel. I assume the advanced aliens, who supposedly came here to establish bases, would have brought at least one architect or mechanical engineer familiar with the structural strength and building characteristics of the material they'd most likely be working with- stone.

/OK, maybe they were really dumb Hollywood-style aliens, like in Plan 9 From Outer Space. Which begs the question of how they got here without killing themselves by sheer stupidity en route.

cheers

MANCHESTER, N.H. — A jury today issued New Hampshire’s first death sentence in a half century to Michael Addison, who fatally shot a Manchester police officer two years ago.

Addison, 28, had no reaction as the Hillsborough County Superior Court jury announced its verdict after about 13 hours of deliberation over four days. The defense said it will appeal.

I'll bet church will be packed that Sunday! ;-)

According to St. Augustine of Bishop of Hippo (Aurelius Augustinus, died August 28, 430), that is the reason that the churches quit having public confession of sins. On the day some notorious sinner was suspected or expected to confess, every busybody and gossip in town would show up for church. So although there is no rule against public confessions, the usual practice in churches that have confessions is that they are private.

Killer’s childhood described as horrific

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Convicted cop killer Michael Addison’s family members described a home life that was disrupted by drug abuse and violence.

A jury is considering whether Addision should be eligible for the death penalty for killing police Officer Michael Briggs. Jurors have heard testimony that Addison’s mother, Cheryl Kiser, abused drugs and alcohol, was often violent and seldom was there for Addison as a child.

Addison lived with his grandparents as a child. His uncle Lemont Addison said Michael’s father began drinking and doing drugs, sometimes staying out for days partying. Michael’s grandparents, Lucious and Rosetta Addison, often fought and sometimes came to blows.

US Navy Rolls Out First Terminator-esque Robotic Hunter/Killers

The X-47B project will provide just two demonstrator aircraft, mainly intended to prove that unmanned planes can successfully take off from and land onto US carriers. Catapult launch - and even more so, arrested landings - have traditionally been considered one of the most difficult and stressful piloting feats.
Apart from proving the concept of unmanned carrier aircraft, however, the X-47B will also be able to conduct air-to-air refuelling - giving it almost unlimited endurance. The US Navy hasn't asked for more, but in fact the aircraft would have little difficulty carrying weapons and flying autonomous strike missions, as it is derived from a previous joint programme between the navy and air force intended to produce a plane which could do just that.

The X-47B, in fact, will be one of the first true killer robots, able to conduct a mission using live weapons without needing to communicate with pilots or even supervisors on its mother ship or back in the USA. Current roboplanes are typically handled in combat over satcomms channels from bases in America, and take off and land under the control of pilots in ground stations near the runway.

I wish that this was from the Onion...

Michael Steele has been getting a lot of buzz in his race for RNC Chairman.

Unfortunately, Steele has been less than 100% supportive of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. I'm particularly troubled by this interchange:
Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons or any gun that they want?

Michael Steele: Well, I mean you draw the line. I mean, what do you need an assault weapon for? I mean, if going hunting, I think that's a little overkill or whatever, but the reality of it is, I think it's important for a society, a community to draw the lines as we've drawn in a number of other constitutional areas, but I don't think that that means that you go to a total ban for those who want to use guns for skeet shooting and hobbying and hunting and things like that.
Sad to say, but this same quote could've been spouted by John Kerry, Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. It's the LEFTIES, after all, who think the Second Amendment has something to do with "skeet shooting and hunting."

You don't have to be a 'gun guy' (and I'm not) to know that the 2nd Amendment is not there to guarantee our right to target shoot, or hunt, or collect antique firearms. It was put there because the Founders believed that, sometimes and regrettably, armed rebellion is the only resort.

Michael Steele just doesn't get it, and that means that it is important that he not get the chair of the RNC.

Ohio's own J. Kenneth Blackwell is in the running for the RNC Chair post as well. He's a very doctrinaire 2nd Amendment advocate (has in the past said "it's not about hunting", and opposed "assault weapon bans"), which was why the Dems swallowed their pride and ran Ted Strickland (a semi-moderate Dem who at least respects the Amendment) against Blackwell for Governor in 2006 instead of the guy they preferred, the virulently gun-owner-hating Lee Fisher. (Who is Lt. Governor now, and who the DNC expects to succeed Strickland in 2014. Assuming, that is, that they aren't both recalled within a year over the state's financial problems, "Joe the Plumber", etc.)

Furthermore, Blackwell is both conservative and African-American. I voted for him for Governor (after voting for him as Secretary of State twice) and would love to see him as RNC head- both because of his policies, and because of all the moonbat heads that would be exploding as a side-effect.

re: #207 MandyManners

re: #210 Occasional Reader

There seems to be someone named Ken Blackwell. Who's he? I didn't know, either. But here's what he's accused of writing...

Ken Blackwell

Here's Ken Blackwell on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms:

Growing up in the Blackwell household in the central city neighborhoods of Cincinnati informed my public policy work as mayor of the Queen City and as an undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Families like mine — low income, civically engaged, and responsible — expected access to firearms for safety. Then, as now, criminals were not inclined to break into a house where the owner was armed.

Things were tougher in the South where the Deacons of Defense, most of whom were veterans like my father, chased away KKK riders and thugs. These groups of armed men patrolled their neighborhoods to keep them safe at night. Whether it’s an individual or a family who has to fight against random criminals or organized threats, our lives are evidence that Americans, particularly women and minorities in today’s urban areas, need our Second Amendment rights.

From another column by Blackwell:

From their beginnings, gun control measures have worked to create legal disparities, granting unequal rights to members of various socioeconomic groups.

In fact, restrictive gun laws have long been employed to the benefit of a select elite while circumscribing the liberty of populations less popular or less powerful.

Gun control measures, from the slave gun bans of the 1700s South to the Brady Bill regulations of the 1990s have unfairly targeted black Americans and have worked to curtail a disproportionate number of their constitutional rights. Access to firearms was understood by our founders and many early American jurists as an essential aspect of full US citizenship, and it was for this reason that the Black Codes established after the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment -- which constitutionally abolished slavery -- prevented black freemen from owning guns...

Examining both our nation’s constitution and the history of gun rights in America, the right to keep and bear arms has been at the forefront of our nation’s march to liberty and equality. The Second Amendment, which empowers Americans to embrace all of the freedoms and responsibilities their citizenship entails, has been the catalyst of tremendous social progress.

From another of Blackwell's columns:

What kind of “right” do you have, when the government can completely rob you of 100% of the exercise of that right, anytime they decide they have a good reason?

That’s like saying you have the right to worship as you choose, but the government has the power to ban attending church. Or that you have the right to free speech, but that government has the power to stop you from speaking about any subject it wants. Or that you have the right against unreasonable searches and seizures, but that anything the government wants to search at your house is automatically reasonable.

A right that the government can completely take away at any time is no right at all.
So to say that the Second Amendment means you can own guns, but that the city where you live can ban all gun ownership, then you have no Second Amendment rights at all.

I'm not a single issue kind of guy. But I realize that all our rights arise out of the exercise of certain, important rights.

And don't try to take those fundamental (there, I said it) rights away from the citizens and expect to get my vote.

Romney files death penalty bill

Governor Mitt Romney yesterday filed a long-awaited bill to reinstate the death penalty in Massachusetts for deadly acts of terrorism, killing sprees, murders involving torture, and the killing of law enforcement authorities.

The bill, which Romney called ''a model for the nation" and the ''gold standard" for capital punishment legislation, draws entirely from the findings of a special commission that set out 10 recommendations last year. That panel sought to design a virtually ''foolproof" death penalty law by relying on verifiable science and tougher legal safeguards.

New Rule Protects Health-Care Workers' 'Right of Conscience'

The Bush administration today issued a sweeping new regulation that protects a broad range of health-care workers -- from doctors to janitors -- who refuse to participate in providing services that they believe violate their personal, moral or religious beliefs.

The controversial rule empowers federal health officials to cut off federal funding for any state or local government, hospital, clinic, health plan, doctor's office or other entity if it does not accommodate employees who exercise their "right of conscience." It would apply to more than 584,000 health-care facilities.

"Doctors and other health care providers should not be forced to choose between good professional standing and violating their conscience," Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said in a statement

Funniest Nigerian Email Scam I have Ever Gotten.

Dear Friends, my name is Ndugood. I am a wealthy Nigerian prince who loves
the jazz of music. I am seeking your help to move $200,000,000 from my
checking account here in Nigeria to the United States . I too love the
jazz of music and am planning to flee to America to open many jazz clubs
at which I would like you to perform. You will receive $42,000 a night, plus
a meal. My new "Tribal Village Vanguard" clubs will be of great success and
you will become rich like the rest of American jazz musicians. I have
already applied for building code exemptions to allow thatched stages and
the spearing of live animals. But I desperately need your help. My tribe,
the Swindlisi, a peaceful jazz-loving people, has been horribly oppressed by
the ruling military junta, which despises the jazz of music. My father, an
exiled king and booking agent, was recently imprisoned under the Draconian
"three gigs you're out" law. And now I must flee my beloved country with all
of my improbable wealth. But I need help in moving it. I have so much money
that it will not fit in the allotted two checked bags and one carry-on. I am
therefore want to transfer the money through your ATM system. (The Nigerian
ATM system cannot exchange international currencies; it only converts
"antelope to money"). So please to just provide me with your full name and
address, social security number, bank account and PIN numbers. And you will
become incredibly (literally) rich from playing many jazz gigs. (Note:
normal Nigerian Musician's Union rules apply: three hour performances, two
15 minute breaks allowed, musicians to provide their own mosquito nets, one
open fire per bandstand, one free meal plus anything you kill). Act now. The
first ten musicians to respond will receive a free copy of the Nigeria 's
Greatest Jazz Hits CD, by our beloved 'Disoriented' Gillespie Band, which
contains the hits:

The Night Has A Thousand Flies
Goodbye Shrunken Head
Here's That Rainy Season

304 razorbacker  Thu, Dec 18, 2008 2:54:33pm

Friends and neighbors, guns are dangerous. I make no bones about it. My uncle accidentally shot his best friend in the back while crawling through a barbed-wire fence (they remained friends until my uncle's death, the friend was a pall-bearer). A bright, promising 17 year old fellow over in the county seat is now a paraplegic due to teenage horseplay with a loaded gun. A state trooper rolled up on a situation already in control, with the fellow already on his knees and his hands up and within 30 seconds had shotgunned the man to death (a tragic case of mistaken identity, the poor fellow happened to resemble someone else).

So guns are dangerous.

But I could cite even more folks dead through auto accidents. Folks dead from skiing accidents, horseback riding, swimming, aircraft accidents, bathtubs, electricity, chocked on a freaking button, fer Christ's sake, drowned in 5 gallon plastic bucket, hanged on a clothesline, motorcycle wrecks, slip and fall, man you name it and I'll bet some poor sod has died doing it (and I include 'doing it' in the list).

Life is tough. Sooner or later, it's going to kill you. Get used to the idea.

re: #279 Killgore Trout

I can't envision many Jews going to Muslim docs to begin with, but it would benefit all to actually read the article, outlining the details of the rulings... specifically:

The regulation, which was issued just in time to take effect in the 30 days before the change of administrations, was sought by conservative groups, abortion opponents and others as necessary to safeguard workers from being fired, disciplined or penalized in other ways.

and...

"Many health-care providers routinely face pressure to change their medical practice -- often in direct opposition to their personal convictions," said Assistant Secretary of Health Joxel Garcia. "During my practice as an OB-GYN, I witnessed this firsthand. Health-care providers shouldn't have to check their consciences at the hospital door. Fortunately, Congress enacted several laws to that end, but too many are unaware these protections exist."

and...

"The ability of patients to access health care services, including abortion and reproductive health services, is long-established and is not changed in this rule," it states. "Instead, this rule implements federal laws protecting health care workers and institutions from being compelled to participate in, or from being discriminated against for refusal to participate in, health services or research activities that may violate their consciences. . . . "

re: #306 WrathofG-d

No. No matter what you cannot discriminate against the protected classes. Thus, Muslim doctors should still be forced to work on the Jewish.

You cannot discriminate against any person. So if the Muslim doctor wants to be a doctor, he/she would need to agree to treat everyone equally (ref. Hadassah). BUT does every doctor have to do every procedure... like abortion (or female circumcision). That seems to be what they were aiming for with this, but it isn't specific enough that it is about procedure choice, not patient choice.

It's going to be the next ugly fight on the right, because Obama is going to push hard for legislation and international commitments that are going to rub a lot of people the wrong way. (If he keeps his promises, that is.)

It's absolutely true that some of the climate change people are dogmatic almost to the point of religiosity. But it's also true this isn't a really clear cut issue, there is evidence that cuts in both directions, and some of the people on the right haven't behaved all that well, either. There's been falsifying and distortion on both sides.

It's a mistake to dismiss all the evidence for human-induced climate change. And ultimately, it's a cause that conservatives ought to be able to get behind: responsible stewardship of the planet's resources.

A big 'Roger that' on the responsible stewardship statement. My concern is that the debate is not over - contrary to what Al Gore claims - and since there is doubt on both sides, this is certainly not the time to enact draconian measures...unless one has a different, hidden agenda. And in my view, there is a hidden agenda at the core of the warming movement.

Unlike the Carly Simon song, I'm neither blindly nor deftly so vain, but I do recognize that this tear-invoking slice from the Onion is hit humor aimed directly at many of us who see the MSM as biased as some go about trying to prove such blatant bias...and like SNL with all the Palin parodies I fear they are laughing at us rather than with us. Some of us are so vain that we think the venom-laced humor is about us in a creative, funny way.
I might be wrong, of course.
