Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is about to give his first statement since the corruption scandal broke; here’s an open thread for the occasion…

UPDATE at 12/19/08 12:21:58 pm:

Quotes:

I’m here to tell you right off the bat that I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing, that I intend to stay on the job and I will fight this thing every. Step. Of the way. I will fight, I will fight, I will fight, until I take my last breath. I have done nothing wrong.

Don't Cry For Me Illinois

Don't cry for me Illinois
The truth is I never left you
All through my campaign
And in the Senate
I voted present
Please keep your distance

And as for fortune and as for fame
My campaign raked them all in
Though it seemed to the world
Their credit was good
They were donations
From strange relations
And foreign entities
The money was here all the time
When Blago whispered to me

Don't cry for me Illinois
The senate seat I left you
When I’m in DC
You will remember me
Your prosecutor
Should keep his distance

Has Rod said to much?
There's nothing more I want to say to you
But all you have to know
Is on nightly news shows
And what I say is true

54 Sharmuta  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 12:12:42pm

As Mark Levin put it the other day, (paraphrasing) Obama came out of the cesspool that is Chicago tied up with all these scum and theives, Blago, Rezko, Ayers, Emmanuel and etc. And we are supposed to believe that he of the whole bunch is the only one that is clean?

This is unreasonable to believe this is not possible, this just is a disgrace.

I was perfectly willing to give the man his chance to succeed. But this in my opinion blows it for him even before he takes office.

We are truly f*cked.

re: #88 LGoPs

I know that's meant sarcastically, but he does have history behind him...the people really don't seem to give a shit. They really do get the government they deserve.

Unfortunately, it's not all that sarcastic.

Many politicians do indeed believe they are above it all, because they "mean well", because they do whatever they need to, to "take care of the children" (gag), etc., etc.

It takes a certain amount of over-confidence and super-ego to go into politics to begin with. There are those who temper it with an appropriate degree of humility (GWBush, Sarah Palin). Then there are those who believe that their election is a sign that they have been elevated above the common man.

218 Kragar  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 12:34:45pm

Why Kipling though? Surely Yeats is more appropriate.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all around it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Dems are incapable of putting the interests of their state or country ahead of their own. Just look at the behavior of Gore 2000 vs Nixon '60. Or of Blago now and Nixon '73.

But why should Dems do he honorable thing? There's no incentive to do so, since they know they'll be treated differently. Look and Gerry Studds vs. Larry Craig. Or Reid, Landrieu, and Dachle slathering unqualified praise on Senator Byrd vs. Trent Lott's remarks about Strom Thurmond.

The fix is way in. Blago's going nowhere now, and in a few years he'll probably run for Senate himslef, and the press will help everyone forget this little "misunderstanding".

The socialist left, media and academic friends will reframe/rewrite this episode to turn Blagojevich into a victim of Republican prosecution and the Chicago Way into politics as usual for the New America. It may take several months or even years, but it will happen and Obama will be the hero in the story who kept cool above it all. Blagojevich is counting on it.

On November 10, 1975, in the most famous shipwreck in Great Lakes history, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a treacherous storm on Lake Superior. Now in conjunction with its anniversary of the ship sinking, Southport Video Productions, a film company specializing in documentaries on shipwrecks and lighthouses, has released a new program titled “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

“This is by far our most detailed and comprehensive look at this ships’s story,” says Southport producer Mark C. Gumbinger, who produced and directed two earlier entries on the Edmund Fitzgerald. “The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald presents new interview material filmed for this program, with updated theories about what actually brought the Edmund Fitzgerald to the bottom of Lake Superior on that terrible, stormy night.”

Down $2.50

nice uh?

FYI - The analyst on CNBC earlier was making a note that today is options expiration and so the January contract is screwy-lewy because of too many open buy contracts that have to be closed with a sell contract today. So the sellers are taking abnormally low prices in order to avoid having to take delivery.

The February contract is holding at $42.50. So, when we come in on Monday and the headlines start referring to the February contract, it will seem like we will have a $7 spike in price.

Make sense?

355 loppyd  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 1:08:48pm

OT, but so funny...

The WSJ Best of the Web Today reports that The One's speech writer SEEN HERE wrote his "Lincolnian" race speech last March - not The One himself as previosuly reported.

Remember Barack Obama's big race speech back in March, the one that invited comparisons to Lincoln? Neither does anyone else, but it seemed like a big deal at the time. On March 18 The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder did a short item called "Speechwriter of One" (quoting verbatim):

This wasn't a speech by committee... Obama wrote the speech himself, working on it for two days and nights... and showed it to only a few of his top advisers.

This now appears to have been puffery, at least if the Washington Post has the story right:

One Saturday night in March, Obama called [Jon] Favreau and said he wanted to immediately deliver a speech about race. He dictated his unscripted thoughts to Favreau over the phone for 30 minutes--"It would have been a great speech right then," Favreau said--and then asked him to clean it up and write a draft. Favreau put it together, and Obama spent two nights retooling before delivering the address in Philadelphia the following Tuesday.
"So," Obama told Favreau afterward. "I think that worked."

Favreau is the 27-year-old Obama speechwriter best known for a party photo in which he pretends to grope the right breast of a life-size cardboard cutout depicting New York's junior senator. Harmless frat-boy antics, to be sure, but it does make all the solemn praise Obama got for that race speech all the more hilarious.

I'm originally from Wisconsin, myself - but the steep hills, inexperienced drivers and the failure to address the road conditions will often make me stay home when it's like this.

Your link was incredible - I just emailed it around locally, and sent it to my brother in Wisconsin, as well. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it.

I'm wondering way they head down that street, it's residential, with narrow tight turns. Not something I'd relish in good weather (I'm bus certified). In this kind of weather I'd go a long way out of my to stay on arterials.

Parents Drug, Shackle Daughter in Forced Marriage Bid in Bangladesh

A U.K. National Health Service doctor was imprisoned, drugged, bound and gagged before being forced into marriage in Bangladesh, it emerged Friday, as a British judge issued an order telling her parents not “to pester, harass or intimidate” her.

Dr. Humayra Abedin, 32, was held captive for four-and-a-half months by her family and was forced to marry while under the influence of drugs. She was freed by a court in Bangladesh and returned to Britain on Tuesday.

...snip...

In court, Abedin’s lawyer, Hassan Khan, read from a statement describing how she flew to Bangladesh in August, believing that her mother was very ill.

On arriving at the family home “she was manhandled into the property by a number of people and immediately locked into a room,” the statement read. “She was always monitored by four or five guards and she was not free to leave the property. Her passport, tickets and other documents were taken from her.”

Hence the need for the cement shoes. The quote, provided by Buck, that someone will whisper in Blago's ear as they approach Lake Michigan, will be, "This is the 'Chicago Experience.' You can't understand it unless you are from Chicago, and even some people from Chicago can't understand it. We have traditions to uphold. In Chicago we do things Chicago Style . . . and we are proud of it."

Here is his 'speech'.

BLAGOJEVICH: "OK. Thank you very much.

I'm here to tell you right off the bat that I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing, that I intend to stay on the job, and I will fight this thing every step of the way.

I will fight. I will fight. I will fight until I take my last breath.

I have done nothing wrong, and I'm not going to quit a job the people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob.

Now, that's what I'm going to do. Let me tell you what I'm not going to do. I'm not going to do what my accusers and political enemies have been doing, and that is talk about this case in 30-second sound bites on "Meet the Press" or on the TV news.

Now, I'm dying to answer these charges. I am dying to show you how innocent I am. And I want to assure everyone who's here, and everyone who's listening, that I intend to answer every allegation that comes my way.

However, I intend to answer them in the appropriate forum -- in a court of law. And when I do, I am absolutely certain that I will be vindicated.

Rudyard Kipling wrote, If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you; if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you and make allowance for their doubting, too; if you can wait and not be tired by waiting; or being lied about, don't deal in lies; or being hated, don't give way to hating.

Now, I know there are some powerful forces arrayed against me. It's kind of lonely right now.

But I have on my side the most powerful ally there is, and it's the truth.

And besides, I have the personal knowledge that I have not done anything wrong.

To the people of Illinois, I ask that they wait and be patient, sit back and take a deep breath, and please reserve judgment. Afford me the same rights that you and your children have. The presumption of innocence. The right to defend yourself. The right to your day in court. The same rights that you would expect for yourselves.

And one last thing: To all of those -- to those of you who have expressed your support to Patti and me during this difficult time, I'd like to thank you for your thoughts; I'd like to thank you for your prayers; and I'd like to thank you for your good wishes.

Patti and I cannot express to you how grateful we are for your kindness.

Merry Christmas. Happy holidays."

Blago is not going to take one for BHO. His ego is waaay to big and he knows the MessiOh won't touch him with a 10ft pole now. He's going rogue on this one. Will hedge all bets on trying to get the wiretaps thrown out & using marital priveledge so his wife won't have to testify against him. However, Mrs. B's family may talk her into saving herself - for the sake of the children of course... (I mean her 2 kids, not those poor saps at Childrens Hospital he tried to shake down). If so, she turns and slam dunks him as star witness. Takes all of the marital assests and has 'her story' published w/in a year. Eventually marries bigger scumbag.

ABC News lies about what Blago said.

As was reported in comment #439, Blago said:

I'm not going to do what my accusers and political enemies have been doing, and that is talk about this case in 30-second sound bites on "Meet the Press" or on the TV news...I am dying to show you how innocent I am.

ABC News edits out the reference to Meet The Press:

[Link: www.abcnews.go.com...]

"... I'm not going to do what my accusers and political enemies have done and that is talk about this case in 30 second sound bites. I am dying to show you how innocent I am. "

Lisa Madigan was on Meet The Press talking about this.

ABC probably edits out the Meet The Press reference because they do not want to heat up any more controversy around the issue. They probably are hoping to 'manage' the controversy to protect Dems and Obama from any more untoward publicity.

I now like this guy. He is telling Obambi to get him out of this mess or he will take The One down. When he said:

Now, I know there are some powerful forces arrayed against me. ...

I don't think he is necessarily talking about the DOJ.

He's telling Barack that he is not going to go down for him without preconditions. Either this guy has the world's biggest balls or he's got something on O'Bambi. I think it's the latter.

The press has been chanting like a mantra that there is nothing indicating Obama's involvement in the Blago Pay for Play scandal. That is just supposition. More likely, very wishful thinking. Obama was this guys election advisor in the last gubinatorial election. It was a little hard to believe he and Obamamassiah were very tight based on the press's characterization of Blago and the quotes from the US Attorney's criminal complaint. But after hearing the guy today (the guy is actually very sharp), I think he and BHO are birds of a feather. I think Bambi paid in and was paid up all the way to the US Senate. And Blago knows just about everything.

Don't be too suprised if this all ends on Valentine's Day, if you know what I mean.

460 frred  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 7:03:01pm

Blago has adopted the Clinton/Morris defense to never admit wrongdoing, but the Chicago Way is to place troublemakers in Lake Michigan.

461 Biff  Fri, Dec 19, 2008 7:22:51pm

If Blago was up to selling the President-Elect's US Senate seat, doesn't it make sense, isn't it very likely, that he got a piece of the play for play action for his own US House seat (i.e., from Rahm Emanuell)? Maybe Obama was the bag man.
