“Every billion dollars invested in wind farms creates some 3,350 jobs — nearly four times the 870 jobs created with a similar investment in coal-fired power plants,” said Earth Policy Institute President Lester Brown.Weatherizing homes is “the most labor-intensive” of energy investments, creating 6,750 jobs per $1 billion, Brown said.

Not a bad idea, actually. When hyper-inflation sets in, the paper money becomes truly worthless, but the coinage will always have at least some value as scrap. Copper, nickel, etc.

I have something shameful to admit. But it reveals a peek into how the Thought Police operate.
As part of a job/project/thing I worked on (vague enough for you?), I had to write something on the general topic of global warming, for a general audience to read. Well, I decided to emerge from "stealth mode" a little bit and write a very concise but pretty devastating debunking of the whole man-made global warming hysteria, hitting the high points of the various excellent debunkings that have already been published.
Well, a person in a different department (sales), who had reviewed the whole [thing], including my small anti-global warming rant (one of many contributions from me), said that they needed to get celebrity endorsements for [the thing], and one very prominent celebrity said they would give an endorsement -- but one little problem: they didn't like that global warming part. So I was asked if it would be OK if my global warming part was removed from the final product.
Now, even though I actually was higher up the status chain, and had a perfect right to stand my by principles and insist it be kept -- I instead caved in to pressure and allowed them to remove it. I could detect a general sense of relief, because, unbeknownst to me, my stepping out of the PC line had been bothering a lot of people, not just this one celebrity endorser.
And once again, group-think and peer pressure (and business acumen) trumps the truth.

Sorry to burst your balloon, by the U.S. mint long ago removed almost all the copper from pennies, since it was starting to cost more then 1¢ to make each one. Now pennies are basically pot-metal with a thing copper coating. And nickels have a greatly diminished nickel content as well. (And as everybody knows, all silver was removed from US coinage in 1964 [except for half-dollars, which still had a little bit of silver until 1969].)
Nowadays, intrinsically, US coinage has no more actual worth than paper money.

I don't know if hybrids are necessarily all that bad. The idea is sound; use a smaller IC engine than would otherwise be acceptable, and use a generator and batteries to time-shift some of the workload to periods when it would be idling. So you have a small engine running at an average 60% load factor, instead of a big one running from 5% to 90% sporadically. (just pulling numbers out of my a**, but you get the picture).
The battery in a hybrid needn't be very large, since it need only store a few minutes' worth of energy. And most batteries can be 100% recycled, where facilities exist.
What is ignorant is throwing away a perfectly sound conventional car just to have a trendy hybrid. Or owning a hybrid only to be seen in it for status reasons, and also keeping a 528 BMW for real driving.

Mice suspected in deadly cat fire
Mice may be responsible for a blaze that killed nearly 100 cats at an animal shelter near the Canadian city of Toronto, officials say.
The fire at the humane society shelter in Oshawa also killed three dogs and some rats that were up for adoption.
An initial report from the fire marshal says mice or rats chewing through electrical wires in the ceiling are likely to have sparked the blaze.
Offers of help have been pouring in from animal lovers across Canada.
"It's unfortunate and ironic that mice caused the fire that killed the cats," Toronto Humane Society spokesman Ian McConachie told the BBC News website.

Does every thread on LGF have to become a gun-themed thread? It seems that gun-related comments have octupled over the last few months. What's going on? Us non-gun-user-lizards have got to do a lotta scrolling these days.

Good (early) morning, lizards!
Tying in to Charles' video link a few threads down, here's the 2002 cover of ''Don't Dream It's Over'' by Sixpence None the Richer -- in my opinion, one of the few examples of a cover that neither falls short of nor transcends the original version; I think they're both outstanding.
Sixpence was primarily known as a "Christian rock" group (the band's name comes from a C.S. Lewis passage) -- the brief appearance of an orphaned baby lamb in the video being a nod to their Christian background without getting pushy about it.
And many of the lyrics lend themselves to a religious interpretation without a single change in wording -- once you've seen the music video with the lamb, it becomes quite easy to imagine the lyrics (or at least some of them) being addressed by Jesus to his followers. Yet you'd never think this based on the radio version, which avoids "appropriating" the song.

On Thursday, here in Vegas, we had a snow day - after 99% of the snow had melted!
It was so cold in Vegas we had North Pole dancers!
In Vegas, there's a standard stripper move where they suggestively lick a metal pole. That caused a few problems on Wednesday . . .

There's also the matter of the Celtics giving the Lakers the beating they so richly deserve on Christmas Day. Seems kind of contrary to the Christmas spirit to humiliate the Lakers in front of their spoiled, know-nothing, vain, show-up-late/leave-early fans on the day we're supposed to celebrate Jesus' birth, but I'm not the one who made up the schedule.

re: #207 gmsc
You can't post images (except avatars by your name) on this board. Just put the image URL in your post, and LGF will make it clickable!
Better yet:
1) In the LGF comment window, type in a descriptive name for the image, such as:
Here is a picture of a rat playing a tiny violin.
2) Go to the page that is displaying the web address of the image, such as:
http: // i16.photobucket.com / albums/b42/Throbert/rugby%20the%20rat/rugby_tinyvi olin_2.jpg
...and highlight/copy this address.
3) In the LGF comment window, use your mouse to highlight the descriptive name you previously typed in (rat playing a tiny violin), and while the name is still highlighted, click on the "chain links" icon at the top right of the comment window.
4) Clicking on the chain icon will activate a small pop-up window into which you can paste the image address you copied in step (2). Click "okay" after pasting the address -- this turns the entire phrase "rat playing a tiny violin" into a clickable blue link to the image:
Here is a picture of a rat playing a tiny violin.
This is the better way to do it because images found on the web often have non-meaningful or misleading filenames -- such as a machine-generated filename like "gh675435.jpg" (or in this case "rugby_tinyviolin_2.jpg," which sounds as though it might have something to do with Australian-rules football). And if you simply let the LGF hamsters auto-link the image address, other lizards will only see the not-very-helpful "gh675435.jpg" instead of something more descriptive like "Obama caught picking his nose."
So, again: make up a name for the image, highlight that name, click on the chain-link icon, and paste the image address into the pop-up window. Cinchy!

re: #218 littleoldlady
The image has to be in your My Pictures or My Documents file.
No, it doesn't, so far as LGF is concerned.
Perhaps it's too big?
If we're talking about an avatar-icon, then this is most likely the problem. But note that "too big" in this case does not refer to the physical dimensions of the PICTURE (such as 640 x 480 pixels, or 10 x 20 centimeters, or whatever) -- rather, it refers to the memory size of the IMAGE-FILE expressed in kilobytes (Kb). Specifically, you can't upload an avatar icon that is "larger" than 32 Kb.
Use whatever image software you have (i.e. Paint) to make it smaller.
"Make it smaller" meaning, in this context, "reduce the file size to 32 Kb or less." With a .jpg or .png image file, you can decrease the file size without reducing the image dimensions by using a higher degree of file compression. But with a .gif file, you actually have to reduce the image dimensions (say, from 640 x 480 pixels to 320 x 240 pixels), since the .gif format doesn't let you change the amount of file compression.

Close guess, lol-Stepped out to smoke and feed my feral Kitties. I have 3 nine week olds in the the back, and an 8 week old, that comes with mom, out front. Front kid is very spooky, tho I can catch and put him at the food. The back 3 are lapspoiled-and take advantage. Mom got sick and went away, after moving them here at age 3 wks-something she never did b4. So I grabbed the kids up and got them eating canned food and goats milk. Mom returned when well, and we've been sharing the babies since. Kitties and I have an affinity-we are all purrsons, and I feed there needs....LOL.

Heh -- the reality is that I had to snatch the violin away from him immediately after snapping the photo, or else he would've chewed it into splinters! (So a better name for the picture would've been "rat about to eat violin.")
(And although Rugby the Rat has been gone for several years, I still have the violin -- and it's now a Christmas-tree ornament, with the help of some wire and a little hot glue.)

Pietr, let me know if you're still having trouble with the icon. But based on the symptoms you described, I'm pretty sure the problem is that your image file is larger than 32 kilobytes.
(Unfortunately, the LGF hamsters don't give you any sort of helpful message if this is the case -- they simply refuse to upload the file, which is a bit annoying.)

As far as I know, there's no pixel limit at all -- the only restrictions are that (a) the format of the source image must be JPG/JPEG, GIF, or PNG, and (b) the maximum file size is 32 Kb.
Did you double check to make sure that the actual extension on the JPEG file is either .jpg or .jpeg? Some image programs will recognize and open a JPEG even if it has an "invalid" dot-extension, but hamsters are pretty simple-minded.
If none of this helps, you might have to try a little later.

Pietr: I just successfully changed my "rainbow elephant" icon to my "holiday cooking" icon (coincidentally, the source file is a 23 Kb JPEG, like yours). So I don't what the problem is.
(Oh, wait -- after choosing the file location on your computer, are you clicking on the "Upload Now" button, or on the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the screen? If you forget to click the Upload Now button, the Save Changes button will not automatically upload the image. Conversely, once you've clicked Upload Now, there's no need to click the Save Changes button.)

Conversely, once you've clicked Upload Now, there's no need to click the Save Changes button.)
Also, if the icon-upload works properly, the green football avatar in the Icon subsection of the "User Account" page should immediately change to your new icon. In other words, there's no need to exit the User Account page and go to a regular LGF thread page in order to verify that the upload "took." If you're still seeing the default green football, the icon-upload has failed for some reason.

Good Morning Lizards-
A warm day here in the South - doesn't feel very Christmas-y but am grateful to have power and safe driving conditions..
A warm day indeed - 66 right now in Baton Rouge - we'll have a high near 80.
Everyone brought out their summer clothes.
And there is no Christmas music at the mall! Don't know why, but if the stores want to sell things, they need to do whatever they can to get people in the spirit - and that means Christmas music!

Hey Wyatt I have a question for ya. Last night we ran an ems call on a young girl. Her mother was going to ride with her in the Ambulance problem was she also had three other boys that were going to be at home by themselves. This happens quite often no big deal. She called her sister but the mom had to leave before sis got there. So we told her we would stay with them until her sister arrived. While we were waiting a police Sargent showed up we were explaining the situation he told us that according to the law an 8 year old can be left alone and even left in charge of younger children. Not including infants or special needs children. Just wondering about other states and what their law might say about ages that children can be left without supervision.

Legally, it's a grey area. In Philly, we'll leave children in the company of an older (responsible) sibling, but it depends on the maturity of said sibling. Barring a responsible guardian or sibling, sometimes we ask a neighbor to house-sit for a while.
Basically, we hesitate to call DHS or some other agency, because the red tape involved is a nightmare.

I heard that too.
But the fact is - accidental or not, who the hell knocks out their kid with chloroform to go partying? Nobody I know.
If you use stuff to "knock out your kid", the death was perhaps not intended, but it was not accidental.

Yeah the cloroform story has been the theory since I want to say trace amounts were found in the trunk while they were investigating the decomp, However in order for residual amounts to have been in hte car that late in the game there must have been fairly large amounts in the trunk. It's a current trend among young mother's to use on their children chloroform which doctor's who trained in its use stopped using due to being unable to properly administer a proper dose without OD'ing the patient. Web tracing on her computer indicated she had visited a website instructing in the manufacture and administration of chloroform.

In 20 years there has only been one time we have had to call DFS though we do see a lot of sad situations.
These little guys were quite the group. talking about school and showing us their pictures . showed us a picture and told us " Thats my daddy he got shot in the head and he is dead now" hearing a 4, 7 ,and 10 year old talk so casually about their father being murdered ,along with them telling us their mom had to take their video game to the pawn shop, not a single indication anywhere in the apartment that it was Christmas a sad situation indeed.

The break down of the family unit is a huge problem here. Has been for the last 30+ years in the black community. The elders can't control or understand the youth. And it is crossing over to the white community also. The youth of today want everything now and don't understand that you have to work and make sacrifices for the future.

Here's a summary of the attitude that makes me sick to my stomach:
Rice: Violence will hurt Palestinians
Secy Rice says:
"I sincerely hope that there will not be a resumption of the violence because that is not going to help the people of Gaza, it is not going to help the Palestinians, it is not going to help the Palestinian cause," she said.
Notice she doesn't even mention that sending random rockets into civilian areas is a war crime and that the fact that the rocket groups keep doing it and the Palestinian public (according to polls) support it means they are acting like monsters.
The Egyptians say:
Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hussam Zakkai echoed similar statements on Friday. Zakkai called on Israel and the Palestinians not to let the situation in the Gaza Strip deteriorate into full-blown conflict, as it would negatively affect civilians there."It's up to Israel to be flexible about [opening Gaza] border crossings," he said. "It's up to the Palestinian factions not to escalate their operations, so Gazans won't have to pay the price of confrontations."
The Egyptians don't say that only monsters continue and continue to chuck rockets into civilian areas. And they don't say that Egypt also will not open the crossings from Gaza into their country until the Palestinians stop perpetrating and supporting and allowing the perpetration of war crimes on civilians. When Egypt, et al criticize Israel for keeping the crossings closed, they NEVER bring up the fact that Egypt is also a border neighbor and could easily be the manager of Palestinian humanitarian resupply.
Like I said, literally nauseating to me.

Offsets do nothing to save the environment. It's nothing more than a tithe to someone else making a quick buck.
Carbon credits make do-gooders feel good about themselves.

OT (if possible on an open thread) Oil down below 37 barrel. Ever since Pres Bush removed the drilling restrictions prices plummeted by 75 percent.
Then we had the oil auctions terrorized by an environmentalist who bid up the prices hundreds of thousands of dollars, won thirteen contracts but did not intend to or have the ability to pay for any of these bids. I say frog march him and anyone else, including organizations that planned this with him. This isn't freedom of speech. It was fraud and an economic crime against those intending to bid. The auction will be reheld, but the delay will give time to Obama and the dems to cancel it.

But here's some good economic news.
The VIX, which is and index measuring market volatility has dropped from a high of 89 in October to 44.94 now. The lower this number is, the less volatile the market is. Normal range would be in the 15 to 20 point area, so it's double what it should be, but this is still an improving situation.

At White House, Obama Links Laura to George W. Bush
After his first visit to the White House Monday to work on the transition process, President-elect Barack Obama attempted to link First Lady Laura Bush with “the failed policies of George W. Bush.”“While she may want the American people to see her as an independent thinker, the fact is that she has supported George Bush every step of the way,” said Mr. Obama. “It’s like the two of them have become one.”
Mr. Obama also accused Barney, the president’s Scottish Terrier, of being “just a partisan lapdog, eating from the hand of George W. Bush, and following him obediently. When George W. Bush gives the command, Barney just rolls over.”

Morning Realwest - I think I spelled the computer name incorrectly - Lenovo - I saw someone mention that its an IBM spin off. I'm not too happy all the parts are made in China, but maybe all computer parts are these days?
But since my last computer died after less than 3 years I don't mind that this bundle was under $500. The desktop came with an acer flat screen and and hp printer. Got this at circuit city and the guy quoted me a price that turned out to be almost $150 less in my favor. Since he told me that, they didn't tell me oops its really more like $600. I thought my luck had finally changed, but then it turns out the hard drive is defective.
So when I called Lenovo, I was surprised not only did they all speak English and were in the US, but spent a lot of time helping try to figure out the problem.... once they determined it was the HD.... they said someone would come to my home to repair it! Never heard of this before! Just that alone made me a fan of this brand right away.
ANYHOW - as for the bail out.... I'd like to see the government bail out Social Security! Then, who ever is laid off from failing companies, could collect early and not have to worry about lost pensions. Seems to me this auto companies are dinosaurs that should go under and the smaller more up to date companies would take off where they left off.
Why is it that the government has money to bail out industries, but not Social Security? Pumping up SS seems to be a win win situation and would insure the economy doesn't fall flat.... bailing out useless industries who have seen their better days, just seems like a very bad and useless idea.
and that's my 2 cents. lol

re: #391 realwest
I mean how did that idiot atheist get standing to sue school districts over the use of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance?
I think that they've usually gotten "standing" by virtue of being the parents of children enrolled in the public school system. (Though the notorious Richard Newdow wasn't even the custodial parent of his daughter -- and in fact the U.S. Supreme Court eventually ruled that he lacked standing for precisely that reason.)
On the other hand, some states continue to have discriminatory laws against atheist office holders (yes, even though all such laws are in jaw-droppingly brazen violation of the "religious test" clause of the U.S. Constitution) simply because it's so difficult for anyone to get standing to challenge the law.
Mind you, I don't think atheist politicos aren't terribly disadvantaged by these laws -- because any state that actually attempted to enforce the laws against an atheist candidate would instantly give the atheist sufficient standing for a lawsuit, and it would take any court about 15 seconds to void the law on Constitutional grounds.

You know this really ticks me off. It seems as if we are in the middle of a total national breakdown. Nothing is working correctly anymore. The economy is destroyed and our government is floating along rudderless. It really is breathtaking and scary at the same time.
President Bush has decided to do an END RUN around Congress. Now ordinarily I would applaud such a move because this Congress is inept beyond all belief. But they voted on this bailout idea and mostly in response to pressure from American Taxpayers decided to kill the bill. This is AFTER they approved 700 BILLION in bailout funds for the banks without any input from Taxpayers or really knowing what they were voting for in the first place. That’s our Congress for you.

Bail out social security? Hell, each working American pays 6 or 12% of their earnings (12% if self-employed, 6% if you work for someone else and the other someone else pays another 6% on your behalf) for their entire working lives; pays - currently - $100 a month for really basic Medicare hopsital stuff and I pay almost $450 a month for Medicare that will actually cover some of my real health issues) and currently won't let you take it out of social secuirty until age 67 - unless, as in my case you become "disabled" then you can get something about a third less that what you'd get at age 67- and they STILL OWE SOCIAL SECURITY OVER A TRILLION BUCKOS!
I think I'll be lucky if they just don't shut down Social Security altogehter, but they sure won't repay or bail it out!

His $161 million, seven-year contract includes a $9 million signing bonus, according to details obtained Friday by The Associated Press. By the time the Yankees open at Baltimore on April 6, he already will have received $6 million of that bonus plus $3.5 million of next year’s salary.

The group’s website says, “The LOBSTER INSTITUTE is a cooperative program of research and education with the lobster industry at the University of Maine…” Not only has the Lobster Institute been working on its “Lobster Cam (TheLobstercam.com),” one its major accomplishments has been lobster dog biscuits: “Your dog can now be a lobster connoisseur. Blue Seal Feeds, Inc. has launched the newest addition to its dog biscuit line Blue Seal Lobster ‘Bisque-its’ based on a concept devised by the Lobster Institute at The University of Maine, and their commercialization partner Saltwater Marketing LLC.” That isn’t much of a treat for taxpayers.

Mrs. Davidson's dishwasher quit working so she calls a repairman. Since she has to go to work the next day, she tells him, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dish-washer, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you the check. Oh, by the way, don't worry about my bulldog; he won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, talk to the parrot!"
When the repairman arrives at Mrs. Davidson's apartment the next day, he discovers the biggest and meanest Bull Dog he has ever seen. But just as she said, the dog just lays there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his business.
The Parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing, and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!"
To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious, and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music, and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.
Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. In desperation, John threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

One of my "jobs" is booking Christmas musicians for malls. That biz is off about 90 percent right now.
Last year, our Christmas show was selling our almost every performance, which is about 130 seats, for sure we averaged over 100 patrons per performance. (show was a comedy called "A Tuna Christmas.")
Our average for this season Christmas show has been about 70 patrons a night, for "A O. Henry Christmas," a musical.
Even given the fact that "A Tuna Christmas" has a bigger name recognition, this is still a large decrease.
The plus side, 70 butts in seats a night pays the bills, and banks us some extra money, but, Christmas shows for theatre are commonly called "the fund raiser" since audiences will normally attend a Christmas show no matter what the material is.
You hope to sell hard for the Christmas show to get you through the leaner months, Jan and Feb.

I'm watching the movie..a shot of Glory. Robert Duvall plays the coach of a scottish soccer team. He has the accent down so well I can't understand a frigging word he is saying..
The real test of how well he has the accent down is whether a Scot can understand a frigging word he's saying!
On the topic of Scotsmen and movies, Sean Connery speaking his two or three lines of Russian in Hunt for Red October was possibly the laziest non-effort to learn a foreign accent in movie history. You can tell he just said "Dialogue coach? Fugoff, I'm Sean fucking Connery!"
Although to be fair, I once saw some bad Russian made-for-TV movie with Roosky actors playing American soldiers in a few scenes -- and their short lines of English dialogue (nothing more complicated than "That's an order, private!" and "Take cover!" and "Die, motherfucker!") were just as laughably inept as Connery's.
The inability of the Russian actors to pronounce "motherfucker" correctly is all the more strange when you consider that in their native language, they have no trouble with words like vzbzdnut'. (That's a real Russian word, meaning "to fart," and the six-letter string of consonants at the beginning is easy-peasy for them. And yet the "th" sound is a Herculean challenge.)

I may have to fall back on my good looks...
We are concerned at the theatre, and the board of directors have told me not to consider my position untouchable.
I have actually been sending out resumes again for programming work, although it's not working. In the last three years, I've sent out over 2300 emails, some back and forth correspondence, and that resulted in 11 months of contract work.
So far I have over 50 resumes out and not even a screening call.

re: #616 doriangrey
Look here for the justification...
When Federal Armed Forces are committed in the event of civil disturbances, their proper role is to support, not supplant, civil authority.
That's a key phrase, federal units will be placed under local control.
Marital law is the next big step.
However, the decision to impose martial law may be made by the local commander on the spot, if the circumstances demand immediate action, and time and available communications facilities do not permit obtaining prior approval from higher authority (§501.2). Whether or not a proclamation exists, it is incumbent upon commanders concerned to weigh every proposed action against the threat to public order and safety it is designed to meet, in order that the necessity therefor may be ascertained. When Federal Armed Forces have been committed in an objective area in a martial law situation, the population of the affected area will be informed of the rules of conduct and other restrictive measures the military is authorized to enforce. These will normally be announced by proclamation or order and will be given the widest possible publicity by all available media. Federal Armed Forces ordinarily will exercise police powers previously inoperative in the affected area, restore and maintain order, insure the essential mechanics of distribution, transportation, and communication, and initiate necessary relief measures.
Overall that justification, is not the justification feared by some, it's pretty restrained. That does not mean it cannot be abused.

One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on an exotic parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher.
Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid. The fine bird was finally his! As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!"
"Don't worry," said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

I was talking about your Christmas show the other night (was that last night? the night before?) in the overnight thread after you had left. What do you do in it? Act, direct, crew? I love Gift of the Magi, but don't love The Last Leaf.
I am production manager. Since we are a small non-profit theatre (considered one of the best on Colorado) we only have three paid employees, the producer, the artistic director and me.
In actuality, all three of us do what ever is needed to keep the place running. I do everything from working between the show and the producer to cleaning toilets (and the producer will do that when needed)
I prop out, run lights/sound, take care of the facility, vacuum, build sets, act sometimes, anything needed to be done.
I am also resident playwright, and they theatre has produced 4 of my scripts, 3 of them world premiers, 2 of them good enough to receive reviews in Variety magazine.

A good news story......
INJURED round-the-world yachtsman Yann Elies is in a serious but stable condition aboard Australian frigate HMAS Arunta after the Australian navy vessel made a mercy trip from Fremantle to rescue the stricken yachtsman.
The French sailor broke his left thighbone and possibly several ribs after his 18m vessel Generali was swamped by a huge wave, causing him to fall to the deck while changing sails, 1200km south-west of Perth in the Vendee Globe round the world race.
The Arunta left Fremantle early on Friday morning and reached Elies at 9.30pm (AEDT) last night.
The Vendee Globe website said fellow solo yachtsman Marc Guillemot, who stayed close to Generali during Elies' ordeal to offer moral support, praised the Arunta crew, who carried out the rescue in a heavy swell.
"Some highly professional work," Mr Guillemot said.

This Movie just went up to the top ten sports movies of all time for me.

I shot the AK-47 when I was in Kuwait preparing to go to Iraq... comparing the AK-47 to the M-4 is like compating a 78 Nova to a 7 series 2008 BMW.
The AK-47 is a tough crude weapon... you can beat it up and it will still shoot... but the M-4 is smooth, sophisticated weapon, needs TLC, but it is sweet to shoot.

I NEVER cold email. And I NEVER apply for a job that I am not 100 percent qualified for. I get my leads for Monstor and Dice, Craigslist and a number of smaller job placement sources.
Those 2300 emails I mentioned were a combination of sending resumes and back and forth inquires from prospective recruiters and employers.
I have mentioned it over and over here on LGF, I have been told, straight out by the recruitment firms and contracting firms that I have worked with, off the table of course, plain and simple, I "don't fit the corporate culture" which, in my case means I am to old (soon to be 56 on Wed.).
I'm not bitter, whining or upset, that's the breaks. That's why I fell back on theatre work, it's a shill and someone offered me a job.
I can learn other skills if necessary, like "Hi, welcome to Wal-Mart," If it pays the bills, I can deal with that.

((12 + 144 + 20 + (3 * 4^(1/2))) / 7) + (5 * 11) = 9^2 + 0

OK let me give you the background.
Your bum or bumbo ... is your butt or anus (Jamaica used to be British until the '60s).
Before toilet paper was available... the rich used cheap linen that they could discard... hence ... cloth... mispronounced by uneducated Jamaicans over years... and later accepted as .... claath.
So when you refer to someone as a Bumbo Claath.... well you are calling them a piece of used toilet paper. Pretty vile.So when you refer to
Ouch! My apoloogies.

When the M16 replaced the M14 as the standard issue for the Army & eventually the Marines, there were all kinds of problems, lots of jaming with guys using cleaning rods during fire fights.
The M14 of course is heavier, but really reliable.

I just watched the intriguing scene you linked from I Never Promised you a Rose Garden. The only other play I remember reading on the subject of schizophrenia (though never saw staged) was Standing on My Knees by John Olive.
And the big difference between the two stories, Rose Garden is about a powerful pioneer doctors who refused to turn to drug therapy in the late 40's, when it was becoming the "next big thing."
The book, although published as fiction, was really based on Joanne Greenberg's own battle with schizophrenia, and the doctor that cured her.

The AMD engineer finishes peeing, and washes his hands with a very small amount of soap and water and says "at AMD they teach us how conserve resources".
The Motorola engineer finishes and walks right towards the door. On his way out he says "At Motorola they teach us not to piss on our hands".

Humayra Abedin, 32, returned to Britain this week after a Bangladeshi court ruled on Sunday that her parents were holding her against her will and that she should be freed.
The High Court in London issued an order while she was in captivity on December 5 under newly-introduced legislation which lets courts prevent forced marriages for residents of Britain.
SNIP
Humayra -- an only child -- reportedly has a Hindu boyfriend in London, which angered her Muslim family. She said after her release she hoped to move on with her life.
SNIP
According to a press statement released by the court, when Humayra arrived at her family's home in Dhaka, she was "manhandled into the property by a number of people and immediately locked in a room."
Throughout her time there, she was "always monitored by four or five guards and was not free to leave the property" while her passport, plane tickets and other documents were taken from her.
Against her will, she was injected with "what she believed to be mood stabilisers and anti-psychotic drugs" at a hospital or clinic.

Heh... naturally I had to look it up. Interesting turn of phrase!
As far as I can tell from Googling, "bumbo claat" as an insult roughly translates to calling someone a used tampon. The word "claat" is from the Jamaican dialect pronunciation of "cloth," while "bumbo" derives from "bum" in the UK sense of "buttocks." So it's literally "ass cloth," but the meaning "cloth soiled by menstrual blood" is generally understood.
(I'm reminded that in the South Park movie, Cartman uses "bloody tampon" as a pseudo-cussword in the middle of a long string sequence of obscenities.)

Yes, her "friends" from the land of "Ur." The costume designer came up with a wonderful idea. In act two, where you see that Debra is finally making some progress, the 3 gods from Ur, slowing start shedding pieces of their costumes, until in their final scene, they are only wearing their body suits. This represented them slowly loosing their power over her.
Even the critics picked up on that, which is unusual, since critics normally don't catch the nuance of a show.

Hosni Mubarak is no one's idea of a visionary, but in sensing the Middle East's political winds he has few equals. So when Egypt's president-for-life warned his ruling party last week that "the Persians are trying to devour the Arab states," it's worth paying attention.
The immediate cause of the remarks is a war of words by Iran that led Mr. Mubarak to recall an envoy from Tehran last week. Among other provocations was the recent release of an Iranian film celebrating the 1981 assassination of Anwar Sadat, Mr. Mubarak's predecessor. A Tehran demonstration late last month also called for Mr. Mubarak's execution, on the grounds of his alleged "subservience to the Zionists."
But the broader context of the friction is its steady progress toward a nuclear weapon and the encroachment by Iran into the Arab world -- principally through Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza and the Mahdists in Iraq. States like Egypt and Saudi Arabia watched with dismay in the summer of 2006 as Israel failed to deliver a knockout blow against Hezbollah. Now they calculate that the U.S. lacks the will to prevent a nuclear Iran. As for Barack Obama's promise of "tough diplomacy," we suspect the Arab states take him about as seriously as they would a tourist who thinks he knows how to bargain at an oriental bazaar. ...
A Middle East Arms Race
The Arabs respond to the likelihood of the Iranian bomb.

Document drop: The story behind Change.gov
I’ve obtained documents sent to a reader in response to his FOIA request regarding the creation of Barack Obama’s Change.gov website. It gives you the rest of the story. You’ll recall last month that I blogged several questions about the propriety of allowing the perpetual Obama campaign to use a .gov domain name for what appeared to be a fund-raising front. Readers and industry observers noted that the decision appeared to violate General Services Administration rules governing government domains.
Guess what? They were right. The FOIA documents sent to Lance O., which he forwarded to me, reveal that the GSA initially rejected Obama’s application for “Change.gov.”

Rip-off or not, the "conserve resources" guy who washes with just a little soap was a new wrinkle for me -- I'd only heard a two-man version.
And I've heard it told as a Harvard vs. Yale joke (or fill in any traditional college rivalry); and also as an anti-elitist joke in which a dude from a non-prestigious, no-name school gets the better of a snobbish Ivy Leaguer ("Well, at Palookaville Community College they teach us not to piss on our hands!").

That's just ridiculous. This has to be at the behest of various layers of lawyers.
Your gratuitous attack on lawyers completely ignores the issue at hand.
That issue is whether a rescuer must act reasonably, or whether the rescuer can take whatever idiotic, dangerous and uncalled-for action comes into their head.
It seems to me that a rescuer should be held to a lower standard than others but it seems equally clear that there must be a minimum standard required.
For example if you were stuck in an elevator on the 20th storey do you think that a rescuer should not be liable if they simply cut the cable in order to get you down to the ground floor real quick?
