Warner Music Nixes YouTube

The struggle over YouTube’s slice of the internet pie is getting mean: Warner Music pulls videos from YouTube.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Warner Music Group ordered YouTube on Saturday to remove all music videos by its artists from the popular online video-sharing site after contract negotiations broke down.

The order could affect hundreds of thousands of videos clips, as it covers Warner Music’s recorded artists as well as the rights for songs published by its Warner/Chappell unit, which includes many artists not signed to Warner Music record labels.

The talks fell apart early on Saturday because Warner wants a bigger share of the huge revenue potential of YouTube’s massive visitor traffic. There were no reports on what Warner was seeking.

“We simply cannot accept terms that fail to appropriately and fairly compensate recording artists, songwriters, labels and publishers for the value they provide,” Warner said in a statement.

One of my gripes is not being able to find older music. The labels will not record it for purchase and the labels don't want you downloading or listening to somewhere else? Moms Mabley for example. That leaves a person with piracy or hoping to find a friend with a copy.

What the labels and most of the musicians fail to understand is that the days of selling recorded music is pretty much gone. Musicians can still make a good living performing and licensing music for movies, etc. but album sales are longer going to be the cash cow they once were.
I think this will soon cause a renaissance in cool new music because artists no longer have to go through record companies to be heard.

44 zombie  Sat, Dec 20, 2008 5:43:42pm

This is why, whenever I find something on YouTube that is really rare and that I really want, I immediately download a copy to my hard drive. 80% of the time, the video ends up later disappearing from YouTube. But at least I saved my personal copy. There are a few that I didn't download that I'm still regretting today, since they're now gone.

That's the "long tail" theory, that the Internet especially makes it practical to keep old stuff online and available. I tried to do an analysis of that when I worked there, and it seemed to be valid.

Like I said, Hollywood suits, have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a new paradigm that will after all make them richer than ever.

It brings up an interesting moral and ethical issue: Are some professions simply not the kind of professions one ought to become wealthy from? I'm thinking specifically of musicians and doctors. The socialized medicine debate comes down to the question: Is providing medical care a "right" that everyone deserves to receive free of charge; or is it merely a way for doctors to become rich? Same applies to music and musicians, in a sense. One could sensibly argue that some musicians and doctors have become wealthy beyond all reasonable measure.

I would love to see it. Most CDs or Albums you buy there is one or two hits, a couple mediocre songs and a couple losers. By adopting a new internet system maybe it will force artists to put out good songs and weed the album "fillers"

On a related note, sat down and watched Mama Mia with my wife on BluRay.

I am no critic, but some things just stand out as award worthy.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences needs a new category: "Double Entendre of the Year" which should go to Pierce Brosnan singing "SOS".

As in "SOS - I need a voice coach badly".

Regrettably, this song has not been pulled from YouTube - judge for yourself.

I'm far more likely to buy an album (or cd) if I've actually heard the music and know something about the album. I rarely buy albums, even from bands and performers I like, if I don't know what I'm buying. Just one less way to preview music. At least iTunes will let me hear about 45 minutes of a song before I buy it. (I then subsequently remove all right protection so that I can make fair use of the song and make backups as is my legal right to do so.)

I have pretty good luck, because I often am looking for "older" music as well, and I don't give up easily. I will admit to occasionally using "P2P" programs like Limewire, where on a good day, you can indeed find very old and obscure stuff. And there are a few blogs, like "I'm Learning to Share," that often uploads very obscure old stuff that is otherwise not for sale.

If you are a talented musician and can't make money, I think thats a YOU problem :(

I know back in the day people got robbed from, but with so many ways to sell your music nowadays and venues to perform it would seem like the money making part wouldn't be that hard.

Take Guitar playing for instance, with all the kids into Guitar Hero, there has to be some kind of surge in demand for kids wanting guitar lessons, you could make some dough at that if nothing else.

Well, it's a problem. If ten million people want to spend their lunch money on an album, it's only fair the artist gets a reasonable piece of the money, and yet, it adds up to a big number for a long haired, overfed, leaping gnome. Meanwhile, a doctor may save lives and ease pain, and still get rich, if at a slower pace. OTOH, the doctor to some extent extorts big payments from ill people, not beguiling lunch money from some spoiled kids. Is it fair? Danged if I know. Just wish I could pull a few more kilobucks/year out of da system.

I find it difficult, if not impossible, to believe that those artists really wanted their hard work hidden from public view.

There is so much 'forgotten' music that if it was available maybe it would find a new audience.

re: #41 Outrider

One of my gripes is not being able to find older music. The labels will not record it for purchase and the labels don't want you downloading or listening to somewhere else? Moms Mabley for example. That leaves a person with piracy or hoping to find a friend with a copy.

Although it is very easy to pirate almost any song, I only pirate music when there is no other legal means that I have to acquire a copy or to test a new program. Pirated music I own that I find a legal way to acquire I usually, but not always delete and buy. I have ordered music from Japan through a British vendor because it was the best legal source without pirating. Seeing a favorite band's album with Japanese script all over it is quaint.

Is providing medical care a "right" that everyone deserves to receive free of charge; or is it merely a way for doctors to become rich?

Good doctors should be paid well - otherwise, what' the incentive to go through all those years of medical school?

If medical care becomes a "right" (which it already is (Medicare) )
then we have to brace ourselves for lower quality heath care (as the pool of good doctors shrinks)

I can point to dozens of albums in my vinyl collection that were never released in any other form.

I find it difficult, if not impossible, to believe that those artists really wanted their hard work hidden from public view.

I'd say that well over 50% of the old vinyl (and acetate) I own contains music that was never digitized. That's why I keep it. I got thousands of songs that are essentially inaccessible to anyone except me and the few other people on the globe who happen to own whichever obscure 45, 78 or 33. I'd be a crying shame to lose it forever because some corporate schmuck has a stick up his butt about getting royalties. Hey, you're not getting royalties for it now anyway, so if i digitize one of these (for example) Rhodesian coal miner chorus 78s, I ought to be able to give it away.

Well, with Safari on a Mac, which I use:

Go the the YouTube page in question;
quickly choose "Activity" from the "Window" menu in Safari;
look for the biggest file listed;
double-click it.

The video will download to your hard drive. The you add the ".flv" extension to the end of the file name. Done.

re: #92 gmsc

Besides these two approaches, another good program is Miro, which acts sort of like a TiVo for your computer. It will search more video sites than you probably knew were out there, as well as many other video sources and "channels", let you know of the results, and will download them to your hard drive for you to keep and watch.

If you don't tell it otherwise, it will remove the files after a specified number of hours, days, or weeks, to help keep your hard drive space as usable as possible. If you like a particular video, though, you can easily tell it to keep the video on your hard drive permanently.

Actually, not true. Modern anti-shipping missiles would do little more then scuff the paint on an Iowa class battleship. However the Iowas had long since reached a point where they could not be modernized enough to keep up with electronics and propulsion. In addition nobody makes replacement barrels for the 16inch rifles.

Having reached the conclusion that the Iowas are now passed their retirement age, I'm proposing a new battleship class.

Same size, weight, speed, and armor thickness (this is a must). All modern electronics and weapons (including new 16inch rifles), and nuclear powered.

Most people aren't aware that there is a Congressional law that requires that the Navy have the ability to provide massive overkill levels of off-shore fire support (my wording, not theirs) for the USMC.

The US Navy has been in violation of that law since the day the last of the Iowas went into mothballs.

Robert A. Bailey, 87, of Hendersonville was awarded the Silver Star today after he saved a fellow serviceman’s life 63 years ago during World War II in Germany.

The Silver Star is the third highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. It is for “gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.”

Bailey will be reunited with the man he saved today in Washington D.C. for the first time since the two men, along with the rest of their unit, were ambushed by Germans on March 19, 1945.

re: #135 Daisy

I care. How'd you do that? Sounds good.

Plenty of recipes out there - I used:

2 cups bleached flour (because I only had bleached flour)
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of water
a "dash" of salt (I used ground sea salt)

I have a KitchenAid mixer and simply mixed on a low setting using a dough mixer. To do it without a mixer just put the flour in a pile on a board and use your hand to make a bowl in the top of the pile, crack the eggs in the "bowl" and add the water and oil, mix with a fork by pushing more flour in as you go.

Once you get a decent consistency (either from the mixer or the board) , start kneading with your hands. At first it will be a bit sticky - just keep working it till it is smooth and not sticky - it is almost a leather like texture when fully kneaded. Then wrap in plastic and let sit for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes the dough is much more pliable and rolls easily. I used the roller attachment on the mixer to roll but you can to it by hand. If you use a mechanical roller, cut the dough into six equal parts and roll those. Rolling actually stretches the dough thinner and thinner. When you have the thinness you want you can use a mechanical cutter or slice the dough into strips by hand. The strips are your pasta, ready to cook.

Cooking takes a lot less time than dried pasta - about 3 minutes or so.

This may not count as the best video ever made, but it is highly entertaining and fall into the "how the hell did they do that?" category, if you try to ponder how they went from scene to scene. Plus, if you're not familiar with Halcali, prepare to have your mind opened to a style of music you may never had heard before -- Japanese mambo teenybopper rap!

Ah, Japanese. A combination of insanely wonderful and terrifyingly stark raving mad.

Not hardly. It cost the Navy just 1.7 billion to "modernize" all four of the Iowa class ships in the 1980's.

The new LCS ships (with a single 57mm popgun) are costing over half a billion each and Congress is calling for over 50 of them.

The USS Ford (CVN 78), when completed will cost over 5 billion, minus its aircraft.

There are some who are calling for the scrapping of all of our carriers as well, with the same lame ass excuse.

"It costs too much wahhh*."

(*bwah! spellcheck thinks I meant "Warhol.")

Do you have an Atlas? It's a little pricey but it's worth the investment. Also if you have one of those Seal-a-meal type things you can make a large batch of dough, separate into smaller lumps, seal it and it will store in the fridge for 4-6 weeks (maybe longer). When you want fresh pasta just open one up and roll it out. I do it all the time.

I bought the attachments for my kitchen aid mixer that does the trick. I was quite happy with the results and plan to make a big batch o dough this next week and do just what you are suggesting.

Can't beat the flavor and texture.

Have you tried any spinach doughs?

OK - what is "alla ghitarra?" (yes - I could search for it but I'd rather get your spin on it).

It's when you hand-make the dough, then press it through a rack strung tightly with wires, to produce "square" spaghetti. The rack was thought to look like a medieval-era "guitar" (what with all the strings), hence "alla ghitarra".

This was before they invented extrusion pasta machines, which allowed for round shapes.

re: #264 Killgore Trout

I was looking at some of those Kitchen Aid attachments and almost bought them just to see how they work. The big problem I had with automated pasta machines was that they tend to run too fast and clog up. I might try those kitchen aid things someday just for fun but I'm pretty good with the Atlas, It does take a bit of practice though.

They are well made. The roller has 8 settings IIRC, each higher number being a thinner roll aperture. I didn't have a problem with clogging (plenty of torque) and the speed is very consistent (as you'd expect). I just worked down to the desired thinness by going from "1" and re-rolling up through about 6 (fettuccine thickness). When I had my sheets done, I changed attachments to the fettuccine cutter and went to work. Took about 4 minutes to process enough for 4 adults.

Having no experience with a hand operated unit I can't compare but it looks like using a hand roller requires a little coordination.

Actually, not true. Modern anti-shipping missiles would do little more then scuff the paint on an Iowa class battleship.

I'm afraid that's just not true, or if it is, the missiles could be trivially redesigned to make it so. Nobody has much of a defense today against a shaped charge, a hundred dollar munition can blow through 18 inches of solid steel, it just isn't fair.

(the defense that works is making sure it never hits, yeah reactive armor et al but you can't cover the whole ship in that, anyway a couple of barrages of cheap missiles would shred even that and sink anything afloat)

Much of what's on YouTube -- heck, on the Internet, everything from music to movies -- is bald copyright infringement, only people don't recognize it as such because it's new technology.

Got a question for you - I have 8 acres on a south facing hillside in the San Diego area. The land has been agricultural for years and was an Avocado orchard for the last 30 years until the Witch Fire burned it all (it takes a HOT fire to burn 8 acres of Avocados).

I want to keep the Ag designation and started a vineyard before the fire and just replanted that acre. I will probably do another 3 acres in vines. So here is the problem I need some help on - the remaining 4 acres are a 30%+ slope. Avocados did fine on them but I know that harvesting wine grapes will just suck at that slope. So I am looking for a crop to place on that area that either pays well enough to make a pain in the ass harvest worthwhile or is inherently light so that the harvested product can be walked back to a trail where it can be put in a bin and picked up by a truck. And the crop needs to be a low water user relative to other crops (Avocados require huge amounts of water which is why I am not replanting them).

I have looked at lavender, mustard and pomegranates. I have also toyed with putting in Agave and making tequila and selling the tequila (already sell wine).

Any ideas? Any one else have ideas?

No they could not, the trade off is propellant versus explosive charge. Missiles have propellant for range but small warheads, if conventional they could not penetrate the side armor on a BB. The work around is to shift the attack profile from sea skimming to a pop up and vertical descent onto the relatively unarmored top deck. That exposes the incoming missile to more risk of being intercepted by anti-air fire such as CIWS or a RAM. Gun bullets can carry a bigger warhead because they don't need to carry propellant, the gun barrel and charge provide the momentum and guidance allowing the bullet to fly ballistically. There were plans to give the 16" rounds some in flight maneuvering ability. The BBs were amazingly solid and extraordinarily beautiful and graceful ships.

Blueberries. They are a very easy crop to grow and there are many options. I grow hundreds of thousands of them. They are a great crop for added value also if you are interested in a pick your own farm. In the last few years, berry crops are on the upswing. Raspberries are another easy berry to grow and there are varieties that are everbearing so you would have more than one crop per year. I also grow pomegranate trees they are becoming a very popular item for resale if you are wanting to sell your crops.

If I wanted to record a TV movie on my DVR or VHS, no problem with own use recording. This is only a case of putting it on line - it is really not being shown to mass audiences, a person has to take an active role in clicking on it, for his/her own personal viewing. Nor is it being viewed with the intent of making profit.

Thanks! I was recently driving through Watsonville up in northern California and they are growing lots of berries (Driscol is the biggest grower). I noticed that they had set up canopies over the plants - I assumed that the California sun is a little hot for them. So that would be my concern down here in inland San Diego - we are just about desert and get 90+ degree days for weeks at a time in the summer. Wouldn't that be too hot for them? Any varieties of berry that would thrive in that sun?

I really don't know anything about farming but judging by grocery store prices I'd vote for growing spices. Lavender is nice and requires little no maintenance. Maybe try oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, etc. Easy to grow and the markup is huge, and it's a very marketable product.

But how important is the internet video, and its response, Cog?

Does it expose artists that would otherwise go unrecognized? Or does it steal revenue away from them?

Certainly, I've purchased records of artists I've been made aware of by this forum, and others. It almost seems the record companies will not recognize the marketing opportunity they have arrayed before them. They're stuck in an 80s mentality.

There must be an opportunity in this. Artists seem to be recognizing this way before their A&R reps.

Are you sure they are not putting the canopies up because of birds? You can grow most any variety of fruit tree or plant provided you have the right variety for your hardiness zone. I know many blueberry farmers who grow for the crops (I grow the plants to sell wholesale but also harvest a few acres of the berries for our use) and I do not know of any of the farmers who place canopies over their crops. That does not mean it is not done ...I just have never seen it ...

I grow two different types of blueberry. Highbush and rabbiteye. We ship the rabbiteye to more southern climates even into southern Texas and Florida. I am sure there is a variety that would work for you. They are a great crop and pretty fast growing so it does not take long to get your first good harvest if you purchase a little more mature plant to begin with ...if you are going to plant in a big way purchase your plants from a grower who specializes in berry plants for the commercial trade. Try not to buy bareroot as it takes a little more care for them to establish.

Castroville has very sandy soil. They are basically a thistle and do well in that soil. My soil is loam (from 30 years of avocado leaves) and decomposed granite. I'd have to look into how artichokes would do in that soil. Nice thing about artichokes is that they are easy to harvest - waist high growth.

No they could not, the trade off is propellant versus explosive charge. Missiles have propellant for range but small warheads.

The old Exocet apparently had 165kg warhead shaped charge, would go through battleship armor like it was so much butter. One might not sink the ship but five or six probably would, and it would be just so much target practice until the ship looked like swiss cheese.

I fully agree, the battleship was a beautiful piece of technological art at rest and in action, but I cannot make a serious argument for bringing it back until and unless armor technology improves greatly - or antimissile technology improves even more greatly. Need something like spaceship electromagnetic shielding or anything else that could defeat shaped charges. Invent it and get rich.

Now, you may ask, what about our other, more thinly armored ships? Well you may ask. But at least, any other navy's ships are at equal risk to our missiles.

We do not grow crops we grow the trees and replacement trees for the orchards. We bud the varieties onto seedlings. We go down in summer and cut buds off the trees in the orchards to turn the seedlings into the different varieties. We did lose a million peach seedlings in the late freeze last year. It was a bad year for last year because of the weather.

Blueberries grow everywhere. Mainly wild blueberries are grown in Maine. Most blueberries for crops in the northern states are grown in New Jersey and Michigan. In the south, the commercial growers are mainly in Alabama. You can grow almost any fruit anywhere (except maybe tropicals) if you have the right variety. We grow over 100 varieties of peach trees and ship them all over the country.

We pay a fortune for wild Ontario/Quebec blueberries - they are smaller than the domestic varieties and the picking costs are much higher. They have a superior flavour and they are supposed to have more anti-oxidants. They have a short growing season up here - July to September. They grow in shallow rocky soil. If you could grow these down there you would have an amazing product.

Every weapons system has it's season and it's niche. The Rail gun is attractive simply because of the range and the weight of metal it can put on target for extended periods (no propellent means you get more metal to throw per ship before resupply.) The big problem is the rails, not the ammo...

How to commit seppuku in the Japanese style.

You'll need:
x1 short sword (anyone know what this is called?)
x1 long sword (katana)
x1 assistant.

1st, take off your shirt and mentally either cleanse yourself or focus on why you're committing seppuku.
2nd, kneel, maintain a calm expression and disembowel yourself with the short sword.
3rd, while you still have your composure, ask your assistant to cut off your head with the long sword. You may want to do this before you cut open your belly.

re: #392 itellu3times

Once upon a time I was 1st LT Afloat on a cruiser when we refueled from the New Jersey and I fell in love.

The BBs are valuable because they can toss volkswagons far enough to keep over 80% of humanity in range. That and the fact that like a big dog they make Marines happy. The rail gun would be for a new platform.

I was always keenly aware that our only defense against becoming swiss cheese from a missile on terminal approach was either mess cranks throwing spuds, the electrical techs practicing golf from the fantail, the gunners mates and Supply Officer practicing skeet shooting with the shotguns or CIWS. The last might turn an incoming missile into incoming shrapnel that would still take out your berthing. At one point I owned the BPDSMS, the Basically Pointless Defense Surface Missile System. Prayer was a good idea.

Try here. Also check out your local nursery and look for Camellia sinensis. They may not make a big deal out of them and most of the nursery staff won't even know what they are but they might be available. I invested about $100 eight years ago and I haven't bought coffee or tea at the grocery store even since. It takes a while to figure out how to pick and process the leaves but it's very satisfying.

I just have a small city plot, maybe 100 ft by 150 ft. In a good year I can grow about 40% of my own food. It's amazing what you can do with limited space, a little knowledge and some hard work. It's a lost art. I grow figs, wasabi, pears, plums, tomatoes, shallots, herbs, tea, etc. The trick is to not waste anything. If there's a cold snap coming I take a day off and harvest all my tomatoes, dry my figs, etc. A small city plot can produce a lot of food if you pay attention.

I have a pomegranate tree, 2 or 3 years now, no fruit at all

do the need a pollinator, or are they female and male trees?

Ploome ...here is a little basic info but as a rule "most" fruit trees will yield more fruit if you have a pollinator even if they are "technically" self-fruitful ...

The attractive scarlet, white or variegated flowers are over an inch across and have 5 to 8 crumpled petals and a red, fleshy, tubular calyx which persists on the fruit. The flowers may be solitary or grouped in twos and threes at the ends of the branches. The pomegranate is self-pollinated as well as cross-pollinated by insects. Cross-pollination increases the fruit set. Wind pollination is insignificant.

re: #522 JacksonTn

You're quite right about pollination for fruit trees. Usually if your fruit tree has plenty of flowers at bloom time but little or no fruit the problem has to do with pollination. Could be that the right insects aren't active at bloom time, a problem in our area due to climate. Or you need another variety to cross pollinate. This can even be a flowering branch from a different variety in a pail of water that you put beside your tree when the flowers are in full bloom.

If the tree is healthy and vigorous but doesn't have flowers it could be the pruning/training, soil nutrition or some other factor, harder to diagnose.

C'mon. You gotta be kidding me. Berlin Retiree Lived with 1,500 Parakeets

Berlin officials cleared about 1,500 budgies and parakeets on Tuesday evening from a two-room apartment occupied by a retired man in the Spandau district of Berlin, according to city veterinarian Margit Platzer, who said it took more than seven hours to catch all the birds.

The 60-year-old man had collected the animals over the last 10 years, letting them perch on wooden rods installed in his living room and fly freely around the apartment. His floors were covered in inches of bird dung, Platzer said, and some walls had gone moldy from moisture. The man's neighbors had called to complain about the noise and smell.

re: #539 yael

You're quite right about pollination for fruit trees. Usually if your fruit tree has plenty of flowers at bloom time but little or no fruit the problem has to do with pollination. Could be that the right insects aren't active at bloom time, a problem in our area due to climate. Or you need another variety to cross pollinate. This can even be a flowering branch from a different variety in a pail of water that you put beside your tree when the flowers are in full bloom.

If the tree is healthy and vigorous but doesn't have flowers it could be the pruning/training, soil nutrition or some other factor, harder to diagnose.

If a person does not have room for many apple trees, do you think a crabapple would work ...I have some friends who have orchards and they sometimes place them in with their apple trees. I do not grow trees to maturity.

re: #528 JacksonTn

I am on dialup, so my replies are a bit out of sync, my apologies. We have tested some peaches from the Clemson program (the earlier ripening ones) but all peaches are a bit of a chance in Puget Sound, at least the field grown ones. We evaluate for productivity first, then flavor and disease resistance because leaf curl is the big problem in a cool moist climate. There is a small interest in U-Pick and farmers market stone fruit since there is nothing to compare with tree ripe when you are talking about peaches and plums.

Watch videos all of the time on youtube. This sucks. But, I'm not the guys who made the music, videos etc. So I get it. But it sucks.

It's not really about them getting paid... it's the labels trying to squeeze the last dime out of everything... it would be interesting to see if there was any increase in sales when they first started placing videos and if there's a huge drop in sales after they yank them off... mostly thinking exposure can generate interest etc...
Nice while it lasted, can be lived without though...

Crabapples will work fine just so they flower at the same time as your main apple tree. Crabapples are used a lot here as pollinator trees in commercial orchards because they bloom much more heavily than standard apples and can be trained into narrow upright columns that don't take up orchard space. Also no chance of getting them mixed up at picking time. Spacing is about 1 crabapple per 8 standard trees in a staggered pattern.

If you just have one tree in your backyard, hand pollination might be worth a try. Get a flowering branch from the other tree and use a Q-tip, small paintbrush, fingertip etc. to pollinate. In many of the newer apple orchards in western and central WA, a lot of the orchards are trained to a narrow trellis. Bees apparently prefer to go up and down the trellis rows but don't like to cross between them, so the pollinizer trees are spaced to take advantage of that.

I don't think that would really help any if you were in a poorly lighted place and someone was pointing one at you.

There been more than a few close calls and a couple of shootings by police IIRC.
Cops are worried about Airsoft guns, they don't want to shoot a kid with a toy. But in that split second, is it a toy? Or the real deal? The cop can't take the chance.

Or if the aircraft is damaged after a combat mission, since most military flights during wartime aren't limited to landing your plane in pristine condition.
They don't fly them off of the Nimitz-class carriers that are almost 1/3 longer than the Forrestall-class carrier in that video, and for a good reason.
Just because it can be done does not mean it should be done.
Col. Jimmy Doolittle was able to launch B-17's from WW2 carriers one time, but just because he did it the Army Air Corps and the Navy did not make it SOP.

re: #628 jcm

Besides-the point of the test was the payload a C-130 could deliver to a carrier. They're capable of being unloaded and then leaving-so what if they can only land in daylight. Air refueling and correct timing could put 2-4 on the deck per day, to refurbish not only the carrier-but support ships. Yeah. I'm of mixed mind about whether or not they are a good idea. I'd have ate them up as a kid. They offer a practical training tool for familiarizing yourself with the controls of the real thing.

Grownups seem to like 'em too, for doing relatively realistic small unit training.

And I'd think that they'd be more fun than a bottle rocket war. Of course, my sense of what's fun is probably different than most people's. When I was a kid we'd soak tennis balls in high-test gas, set them on fire, and throw them at each other. Fun :-)

Oh yeah, that AC-130 reminds me of Puff in Vietnam (different plane but still loved that cover fire!). They told us that puff could put a round in every square foot of a football field sized piece of terrain in a three second burst (not including the 105).
Whoa! Talk about your air support!

re: #636 Pietr

Besides-the point of the test was the payload a C-130 could deliver to a carrier. They're capable of being unloaded and then leaving-so what if they can only land in daylight. Air refueling and correct timing could put 2-4 on the deck per day, to refurbish not only the carrier-but support ships. And the DROP ratio was Important-Carriers don't relly need to run over a crashed C-130, IMHO.

COD aircraft are used to transfer people to and from the carrier, NOT to re-supply it.
If that was the case, considering the hundreds of thousands of pounds of supplies the Carriers need to replenish them, there'd be no time for the fighter and attack squadrons to carry out their mission.

OK-didn't get the COD reference, but I got the purpose of the test, IMHO. I didn't think they'd use them while the Carrier was engaged-so that was never their thought. If that was the case, AF would probably have B-52's attacking the enemy as cover for the fleet-so the carrier could get to safety. But in most engagements against smaller countries-it'd be a re-supply option, launched as the fleet disengaged. We have to think outside the box, because we work with what we have...:>O

re: #626 jcm
Hey jcm! About 25 years or so ago, ABC had a newshour about "Shoot/Don't Shoot" training for cops.
It was pretty interesting, but then viewers got to take the same test as do real cops - video tape, radio calls, lights, sirens, screeching tires and that sudden awful moment when you as the cop have to decide whether or not to shoot.
I did EXTREMELY POORLY being as how I shot every time. I thought it was a trick but one of 'em had a two man squad car responding to a call for a guy shooting from a highway over pass- car screeches up to a stop, cops get out and there's a dude laying on his belly on the over-pass - cops on screen are yelling "POLICE! Stand Up, Hands in the Air" - dude doesn't move at all. Cops still advance on him and still yell out the same thing - then as they are advancing up towards the dude they yell the same thing AGAIN and the guy rolls over, see's em, smiles and stands up - cops have guns drawn and again yell "POLICE. STOP. Put Your hands in the air" and the dude grins, and reaches around behind his back and pulls his hand out with something black in it and I "shot" him six fucking times.
Turns out he was a deaf-mute and what he'd pulled out from his back pocket was a wallet sized thing with a card saying "Help Me, I'm deaf and can't talk"
in BIG black letters.
It was so increbily realistic I actually felt bad for "shooting" the guy, but those types of live or die situations are reason enough for me to make toy manufacturers stop making realistic looking guns, with or without an Orange or Yellow tip on it.

Huh. We used BB guns - pump action - with clear plastic face shields in Advanced Infantry Training and have to go - one at a time - through some heavily forrested areas where cadre would jump up or out and shoot at you with BB guns - I think it was called "Point and Shoot" to get us out of the habit of always aiming through the sights - VERY effective training!

We didn't get any this weekend (yet). Up the hill, they are getting slammed, up to two feet. But this storm is slow, not a lot of forward movement, so it's just hanging along the continental divide. I've got 6" at my place. But I'm in the "shadow" of the Olympic mountains so it's pretty light. Some place are getting up to 2 feet, East of here combine that with hurricane (70mph) force winds. It's a significant storm for this area.

Well, that would be a significant storm for any area. 70mph winds is with snow is a blizzard.

Winds picked up about 35-40mph.

Did you see this...

I'll probably have a foot, up to 3 feet in some areas.
The other thing is the cold. 20's. Many folks aren't ready for 20s, when we seldom dip below freezing.

I've got a wood stove, and propane camp stove and plenty of food. I'm good.

That first photo, in Franklin NJ, look familiar, since I lived in North Jersey for 10 years. You get a lot of snow in North Jersey in the winter. I lived at Lake Hopatcong, and the road pass our house was snow packed for at least 3-4 months in the winter. Snowmobiles use to tool around the neighborhood, up and down those roads.

I've been listening to it on the radio. Not a lot of details. Right wing caught on fire, I think 113 on board, luggage compartments were melting on right side of plane and luggage was dropping out on passengers heads as they were headed for the chutes. About 35 people injured enough to have to be taken to hospital.

Considering plane accidents, everyone pretty lucky on this one.

re: #778 realwest

Huh, I wonder what his REAL answer was? I'm betting it was a tad more, ah, direct!

The General's (McAuliffes) first reaction was that the Germans wanted to surrender to us. Col. Moore quickly disabused him of that notion and explained that the German's demanded our surrender. When McAuliffe heard that he laughed and said: "Us surrender? Aw, nuts!" the date was December 22nd, 1944

But then McAuliffe realized that some sort of reply was in order. He pondered for a few minutes and then told the staff, "Well I don't know what to tell them." He then asked the staff what they thought, and I spoke up, saying, "That first remark of yours would be hard to beat." McAuliffe said, "What do you mean?" I answered, "Sir, you said 'Nuts'." All members of the staff enthusiastically agreed, and McAuliffe decided to send that one word, "Nuts!" back to the Germans. McAuliffe then wrote down: "To the German Commander, "Nuts!" The American Commander."

Well, yes, over and over again. A little. The inventor gets a royalty on patents. The author of a book is paid not just when he reads passages from it in the bookstore, but again and again, for each new copy sold.

These things work to our collective benefit, because they encourage invention and the (entertainment/scholarship/history/etc.) when books are the vehicle. With Amazon's "kindle", the analogy between music and these other forms of authorship becomes even closer.

[Link: www.battleship.org...]

The armor of the Iowa-class battleships was designed to stop 16inch armor-piercing shells fired from 30,000 yards. Exocets would have been no more then a mild annoyance to a mid-80's Iowa class operating within its battle group, and well within range of the Iowa's own Tomahawk and Harpoon ASM's. Those modernized Iowa's also carried four 20mm Phalanx mounts (for whatever that was worth at the time).

Their return to the battle line in the eighties presented the Soviet navy with something else they simply could not overcome or ever hope to match. At a stroke the hellishly expensive Kirov class battle cruisers were rendered...

Yes, battleships are vulnerable to air attacks. That was proven quite conclusively during WW2, where more battleships were sunk in combat by air, then by other battleships overall. In each and every case the victim battleships had little to no air support of their own.

The US military has maintained an almost perfect record of total air superiority in every conflict post WW2 (with certain obvious historical exceptions during Korea and Vietnam). We are very unlikely to lose that superiority anytime soon.

Within their range there is absolutely nothing conventional and surface based on the planet that can offer up the sheer destructive power of nine 2000+lb armor piercing rounds arriving simultaneously in the same 100 yard area, repeatedly. The Amal, (the ever amusing LGF spellcheck wanted this to be Anal), militia never really did recover from that pounding, what was left was pretty much absorbed into HizbAllah.

There is a reason why today's US Navy doesn't want to get within 25 miles of an unfriendly shore. They can't survive...

...so now they get nothing.

When you were a kid, did you steal candy out of the shop, then come back and pay for a bag of the candy you liked?

If I went to a store and they refused to stock what I wanted, I looked around for a place that would.

Who is getting hurt by having the videos available on YouTube? It's not anyone's fault other than Warner's that they didn't try charging more royalties per viewing.

Piss off, you´re a thief!

If the music labels would make their whole library available for purchase and actually let the videos be available for viewing, this would hardly be an issue. The old business model is failing and now other services are stepping up and making offers to consumers.

I'm in the roofing business. I think that I should get a residual check every time it rains and a roof that my company put up sheds the rain and keeps the building in the dry.
I just do not understand why entertainers believe that they should be able to record one performance and get paid for the rest of their lives of it. They made the record and get a cut when one sells that should be it.

Your metaphor is not right. Imagine that you made a nice roof for someone, a roof on which you hold a patent, now I come along and take your roof (for which you have been paid once) and make a thousand perfect copies of your roof and give them away to my neighbors, at practically no cost.

My own metaphor is flawed, here is the more accurate one.

Imagine that you made a nice roof for someone, a roof on which you hold a patent, now I come along and take your roof (for which you have invested a lot of your own time and money, and not made one red cent yet) and make a thousand perfect copies of your roof and give them away to my neighbors, at practically no cost.

Almost identical...

Y'all need to listen to Far Cry off their latest CD. His voice has mellowed nicely and actually sounds very good!
