Tech Note: Individual Comments Improved

Science | Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:45:08 pm PST

Our individual comment pages now include all the tools that are visible on the full comment threads, including ratings, favorites, and reporting.

You get to one of these individual comment pages by clicking the number of a comment (at top left of each comment). It’s a way for you to link directly to one comment without having to load a whole long thread full of them.

The URL for an individual comment looks like:

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/showc/209/6407125

The last two numbers are the comment’s relative number in the thread, and the comment’s database ID.

You can also link directly to a comment using just the ID, by leaving out the relative number like this:

http://littlegreenfootballs.com/showc/6407125

Ah, good. This will allow for "runaway evolution" in the "Best Comments" drop-down menus. Before, one could view the best comments that way, but not vote on them.

Christmas returns to Baghdad

Manhal Hana, a 48-year-old engineering lecturer, was out shopping for a Christmas tree with his wife and two sons. A year ago buying a Christmas tree could have cost them their lives. Crossing the militia checkpoints that stud the roads around their family home in Baghdad, the telltale pine needles would have betrayed his religious identity to militant Muslims intent on purifying the district of non-believers.

"Jesus taught us peace and love, no fighting and no violence, people have to love each other," said Mr Hana. "We couldn't come to this area last year, it was too dangerous."

India threatens Pakistan as Mumbai hotels reopen

India is keeping 'open' the option of a military strike on Pakistani soil even as the two hotels attacked in Mumbai reopened their doors.

As the Taj Mahal Palace hotel and the nearby Trident-Oberoi invited guests through their doors following the attacks that killed more than 170 people, the Indian government made clear that it held Pakistan responsible.

"Terrorism remains a scourge for our region. If a country [Pakistan] cannot keep the assurances that it has given, then it obliges us to consider the entire range of options that exist to protect our interests and people from this menace," said Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian foreign minister.

/Hey, Pakistan needs a good "talking to" and sooner or later someone's going to have to bring them to heel, better India than the U.S., just keep it non-nuclear

Christmas returns to Baghdad

I just read that article myself earlier this morning. And it got me thinking: Why are they buying Christmas trees in Baghdad? That's specifically a Germanic tradition. Even the Brits didn't do it until Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, and the Royal Family started doing his family's old Teutonic tradition of decorating a tree at Christmas - -and the rest of the country started imitating her. And then it spread to America.

Christian communities in other parts of the world have no need to emulate these highly specific Euro-centric customs!

Thank you, Charles, for the improvements!

Now, in the vein of individual comments, this individual wants to take a moment and express her gratitude. I've been grumbling all week because the snow and ice has kept me more or less homebound. It's wreaking havoc on Christmas plans, and cabin fever set in days ago.

However, yesterday I was at the home of a friend who had a house fire. She and her husband and their eight children are living at her parents' house until the house can be fixed*. They've lost a lot of their wordly goods, and the hassle is going to be huge.

I came back to my warm, intact, mostly-clean home and I no longer feel to grumble. Yes, the weather is still bad here, and we can't get out, but I have electricity (obviously), healthy children, and a helpful husband. Life is good. I even have cookies.

*Just because I know you're curious, it started with the dryer.

I saw this the other day too....
IRAN: 'Tis the season, also in the Islamic Republic

Despite how much Muslims complain about Western culture they really love it. Also why would they even celebrate Christmas in December. That was a Catholic thing. I'm pretty sure Eastern Orthodox and Coptic Christians have a different date for Christmas.

According to the Julian Calendar, the calendar of the Roman Empire, which hasn't had an emperor to correct the date in centuries, December 25 is now falling on our (Gregorian Calendar) January 7. Some Orthodox celebrate on our December 25th and some on January 7th. When it was introduced, the calendar of Pope Gregory was hotly resisted by Protestant and Orthodox Christians. But the fact that it was a more accurate calendar has won most over to following it.

Just read about the Cephalod Surprise. It's linked in the link I gave Reine du tout.

I like Skippy's Rule #145: I should not drink three quarts of blue food coloring before a urine test.

LOLOLOL!
I'm just picturing that.

re: #71 experiencedtraveller

Homosexuals are included elsewhere among the immoral persons who, St. Paul says, deserve judgement by God (I Timothy 1:10). There is no example in all of the New Testament of approval, acceptance, or even tolerance of homosexuality.

Throughout Christian history, this disapproval has continued to be the case. In the patristic era freedom from homosexuality was seen as a mark of the Christian's ethical superiority to the wanton way of life that converts had left. Patristic thinking, like scriptural references, were directed to the practice of homosexuality, not to the desire itself. The Orthodox Church does not condemn the person who keeps this propensity in check, and ministers to homosexuals who wish to find release from this inclination.

Heh, the usual nuance.

I also like the one about, "Despite the confusing similarity in names, the "Safety Dance" and the "Safety Briefing" are never to be combined."

One has a strong feeling that the word "again" has been carefully removed.

There used to be a page that explained the history of LGF, frequently asked questions, and what certain "inside" terms meant but I can't find it anymore. Charles, is it somewhere on the site still?

Thanks - I wasn't sure if it was at any time, for example if there are people fighting over something...if that would also be deleted or if it was any time, but I see it is a post with only that and no other words. I can understand how that would be inane.

Heh, the usual nuance.

I am fairly certain some of the people attending my church are homosexuals. I've never asked them.

In a discussion about the Church of England, someone asked my Archbishop, "are there any gay clergy in our church?" His reply was, "I don't know."

re: #68 zombie

I was off line for a month or so when Charles initiated the karma system, so I was a bit at sea when I noticed it. Interestingly (to me at least) I've noticed that some of the gaming forums I frequent have a kind of form of the system. I noticed this one, as I understand it, it is intended to recognize posters that have been particularly helpful to other users. Similar, but a little different from here.
Karma system exapmle, explained on a gaming forum

The reference to "orens" refers to the in-game currency, a form of gold.

re: #100 David IV of Georgia

A priest from a disbanded schismatic branch of the Orthodox church tried to join our church. There were irregularities in his life (he kept some boys that were not his in a way that created suspicions) that in the end caused him to be refused. He has now, years later, been convicted of pedophilia.

That was laugh out loud funny!

" I didn’t get into any trouble because nobody wanted to look like a bad sport. And I got to watch my CO take a high velocity mollusk to the kisser, which is a good morning no matter what branch of the military you are in."

LMAO.

re: #107 Killgore Trout

I can almost guarantee there are.

Predispositions to sin and temptations are not sin and incur no guilt. All people are tempted to do wrong. Among its roles the church is supposed to be like a hospital for the ailing. Unfortunately, many churches get hung up judging and condemning the sins (like homosexuality) of others while not realizing that their condemning is considered a worse sin than sex outside of marriage. What sins a person has, unless it directly affects me, is between him, his priest, and God. And his priest is absolutely forbidden to discuss such things. I've got enough problems—why should I worry about someone else?
