I've always been partial to the piano. Studied it for about 12 years when I was a kid. One of the only instruments that sounds great stand alone.......

Ben Folds is wonderfully talented, but hard for me to listen to. I do not know why. I have some very musically talented friends who love him... just can't get into him.

And, I know that makes me the one that is wrong.

I was never really sure whether his song "Brick" was pro or anti abortion.

20 gop_patriot  Sun, Dec 21, 2008 6:57:22pm

Nice song. :) Still not sure what was up with catwoman, was she a part of Ben's group or was she with the program?

...And bonus points for working the "diaper-wearing Astronaut drives 18 hrs. to kill her boyfriend" (wasn't it really her rival? Whatever.) story into the song. LOL!

OT--

The Wizard of Oz, always awesome, is just a little bit more awesome when you have a touch of fever. The colors! Must have blown people's minds in 1939 (I know there were color films before then, but still...).

/I'm going to be fine. The fever just reminds me of my dim dead youth, and how I felt after indulging in just a bit of the evil weed....

Personally, I don't understand it. Yea, he sings fine and is a alright keyboardist, but why all the performance art hooey? His tune seems to stand up fine by itself, why all the theatrics with the other pianos and fog, cat lady and bad European variety show presenter?

The presenter sounded like he had a germanic accent. I have watch German chat and variety shows, and out of all the "unusual" Euro TV, they win first prize.

Ok, then he could have arranged it for piano and a harpist, those two instruments sound wonderful together (IE: The Fantastiks) and a smaller choir, one percussionist.

Just seems over done.re: #55 David Simon

Anyone speak/read Polish?

Hava nagila, hava nagila, hava nagila, hava hej!

Matka mej matki kłamała, kłamała
Jej matka tak żyła, ty w ciszy żyj
Ojciec mej matki nie mówił nic
Oszczędzał jej bólu, oszczędzał jej krwi
Umarli, zdechli z nazwiskiem na –ski
Zmienieli na -ski, nazwiska na -ski
W ryj mi dawali za tę tajemnicę
W ryj mi dawali za oczy nie te
Na dół ulicą, pomiędzy światłami
Spotykam twe oczy genami cuchnące
Nie mów nic, a w ciszy przejdziemy bez znaku
Jesteśmy holo-, holo-, holo-wnukami

Hava nagila, hava nagila, hava nagila, hava hej!

Miriam, matko mojej matki, Miriam
Popiół twego ciała w ziemi od lat
Poli kibuci bronuje nieświadom
Że brona co wiosnę popiołów tnie płat
W dupie mam to, czy zarżnął cię Polak
Czy zarżnął cię Niemiec, Rosjanin czy Żyd
Matkę mą, córkę swą rzuciłaś przez mur
Ja twojej śmierci do dziś noszę ślad
Nie obrzezali mnie i tajemnica matki trwa
Córka ochrzczona, o ciszę wszystkich dbam
Polska – nienawiść, ejwa ve ejma
Nienawiść i strach

Ata nizhar, ata yodea, ve chutz mimcha, ish lo shomea

Nigdy nie będę u siebie
Nigdzie nie będę u siebie
Nie przyznam się

Ma córko, zaśpiewaj, córeczko, zaśpiewaj…

Lirkod ve lehaki, ben sheli zimra
Lirkod ve lehaki, kulam lishmoa

Hava nagila, hava nagila, hava nagila, hava hej!

Turns out Leonard Cohen apparently has both the first and second songs on the charts in England for the same song: Hallelujah

In my misspent youth, Leonard Cohen was at or near the top of my list.
My son-in-law (who probably has a Ben Folds album) asked me if I'd ever heard of him not long after my daughter introduced him.

I said "Oh hell yes. Music to take reds by. Good stuff."
Neither of us (AFAIK) take drugs, but he totally understood.

244 DistantThunder  Sun, Dec 21, 2008 8:06:32pm

Wow, I missed a few great threads. I've been home gorging on Christmas cookies, and keeping the fire stoked.

I attended our LDS (Mormon) services today which focused on Jesus - yes we are Christians - and different people from the congregation gave 5 minute prepared talks on their favorite memory of Christmas. Mr. DT spoke about the time we did a sub for santa for a single mother who had 7 children under the age of 10 - by 5 different fathers - and how impressed our young daughter was with how little they had, and how blessed we all felt.

I heard another story in our classroom time - about unity. In our LDS (Mormon) faith, we have what are called "home teachers." They bring a spiritual message to every family every month. So one father and his son are assigned to 3-4 families to visit each month and to also see how they can be of service to those families. People from very different backgrounds and socioeconomic classes are often assigned to visit each other.

So a friend of mine shared a story of when her 5 daughters were very little, and one of them was having a hard time learning to jump rope. They had a dedicated home teacher who visited regularly and made it a point to help the daughter learn to jump rope. The touching part of the story is that the home teacher was a 3 star general - we live near Fort Dix - and yet he took his calling as a home teacher very seriously, serving the needs and interests of this young family which struggling along on a school teacher's salary.

As far as what do Mormon's think about who is going to heaven - we happily feel that God decides, and judges, and our "work" is to bring the gospel to people so that they can have the opportunity for joy in this life - and in the life to come. It's not something we worry about or discuss.

(But know this: One of the big reasons that the other pastors, like Huckabee really come after the Mormon's is that our teachings and the Book of Mormon - companion to the Bible which we also use - state that preachers should not be paid - as it becomes a conflict of interest when they have to tell people to repent. Therefore our bishops and other church leaders are not paid - but do their church work in addition to a regular career. My bishop is a full-time landscaper. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young both ran farms and took in borders to their homes to pay expenses. So see the hostility against the Mormons and then follow the money.

My classic beach story has to do with body surfing.

I had been caught in the actual curl of a wave, and got treated like a rag in a washing machine. I'm standing up as the wave recedes, gasping and frozen, and I watch as a bikini bottom floats by.

I just finished listening to Hugh Masekela's 2007 Live at the Market Theatre album.
That man has never lost a step.
I saw him live way back when Big Black was on the African drums with him.
His sense of humor is intact through all the horrors of his life.
His music (especially ''Lady'') will remind you a bit of Frank Zappa at his best (or maybe what he might have become had he lived).

in high school, many many yrs ago, a good friend of mine ( kinda overweight with a deep bass voice) could imitate the cowardly lion to a tee! she had both routines memorized and had me peeing my pants every time! sadly, she just passed away last month--anna--RIP! we also used to analyze every soupy sales show--POOKIE and WHITE FANG!

I grew up with Soupy, since I lived in the NY area until 1974. He was a really freaky guy. Sort of a combination of vaudeville and the Twilight Zone.

My 77-year-old father is a voracious reader, and took it on himself to read "No Man Knows My History" (which I understand that the LDS Church rejects). We live in Missouri, so he was interested in the history. Interesting book.

Every Saint I've ever known has been an awesome person, and Glenn Beck is my favorite conservative commentater. I don't deny that y'all are Christian, because it's not my place to say. Obviously, I disagree with Mormon theology or I'd be one, but y'all have an admirable family life, and as a Catholic I know many people believe that my beliefs are untenable.

No, I honestly think that after playing guitar zero kid's are far less likely to learn to play any real instrument. Learning to play a real instrument is hard work and takes a long time. Video games are instant gratification, once you get used to getting your gratification instantly you dont go back to doing things the old fashioned way.

Don't despair! It's introduced younger kids to a whole lot of classic rock. And many of them do play instruments; two of my son's friends just went out to LA to attend a music school of some kind. They're incredible musicians for being 18. But they have a blast playing the games.

I know that it's piqued my daughter's interest in taking guitar lessons. :)

Well, it's good theatre, that's why she wants to watch it. And it does have a very uplifting ending. My version goes 8 years beyond the book. The book was released as fiction, but it was based on a true story, about the author herself, Joanne Greenberg. Joanne is a good friend of mine, and I expanded the story, adding much more info about the real doctor (Frieda-Fromm Riechmamn) and right up to Frieda's death, which is not in the book.

Jingle Bombs! Jingle Bombs!

No, cars don't take years to learn to drive and don't hurt your fingers for years while you are learning. It's tough to get kid's to learn to play a musical instrument because of the amount of hard work and time required to learn. Very few kid's make the decision entirely on their own for just that reason.

It's A Wonderful Life is VERY depressing up until the last 5 minutes, which is one of the best payoffs I've ever seen. I have it on DVD, it's one of my faves.

Yet another film my mom hated so I didn't see it for the first time until I was 20.

You made my point well. And that's the trademark of a well written movie, play or story. Where you can engross the audience with very serious themes, yet leave them with hope.

RE: Guitar Hero

Last year my son was in the Middle School Ochestra playing Cello. He was doing okay, but when we got him Guitar Hero last year for his Wii, he asked if he could take private Cello lessons. I signed him up and spoke with not only his private teacher but the school instructor also. Both said the video game would be helpful (timing,, dexterity,,, etc) He now goes to a private High School that does NOT have an ochestra, but he still takes the private lessons (and still plays guitar hero)

Good for your son! Sorry to hear about the high school not having an orchestra. When our daughter was young she played violin. Not only did all her schools have orchestra's but there were also community youth orchestras. Maybe you could help get one going. I helped run one for about six years.

No, cars don't take years to learn to drive and don't hurt your fingers for years while you are learning. It's tough to get kid's to learn to play a musical instrument because of the amount of hard work and time required to learn. Very few kid's make the decision entirely on their own for just that reason.

Huh... that was not the case with me and the drums... my dad was tempted to put a hole in the base and took a ball pin hammer into the gararge to deal with the symbals.

It will all boil down to your daughter's choice as an independent human being.

No matter how we raise our kids, THEY WILL MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES.

All kidding aside with kids (not a pun), give them the tools to be an upright person. Teach them responsibility, frugality, and integrity...tell them they can be whatever they want to be and achieve whatever they want to achieve....it's up to them, ultimately. But, if they are equipped to deal with adulthood, they usually do well....one of ours is out of the house already (ASU), with #2 coming up next fall....only the 9 year old will be left.

re: #406 Walter L. Newton

Thanks! (gosh, all the women on here are giving me holiday cheer).

Well here's some holiday cheer from one of the guys:

An Alcoholic Night Before Christmas

Author Unknown

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
There were empties and butts left around by some louse,

And the best quart I'd hid by the chimney with care
Had been swiped by some bum, who'd discovered it there.

My guests all had long since been poured in their beds
To wake in the morning with god-awful heads.

My mouth, full of cotton, hung down to my lap
Because I was dying for one more nightcap.

When through the north window there came such a smell
I sprang to my feet to see what the hell...

And what to my wondering eyes should show up
But eight bloated reindeer hitched to a beer truck,

With a little old driver who looked like a hick,
But I saw it was Santa, as tight as a tick.

Staggering onward, those eight reindeer came,
While he hiccuped and belched as he called them by name:
"On Schenley! On Seagram! We ain't got all night!
You too, Haig and Haig, and you too, Black and White.
Scram up on this roof; get the hell off this wall;
Get going, you dummies, we've got a long haul."

So up on the roof went the reindeer and truck,
But a tree branch hit Santa before he could duck.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard from above
A hell of a noise that was no cooing dove.

So I pulled in my head and I cocked a sharp ear;
Down the chimney he plunged, landing smack on his rear.

He was dressed up in furs, no cuffs on his pants,
And the way the guy squirmed, well, I guess he had ants.

He had pints and quarts in the sack on his back
And a breath that would blow a freight train off the track.

He was chubby and plump and he tried to stand right,
But he didn't fool me, he was high as a kite.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And missed half the stockings, the plastered old jerk.

Then putting five fingers to the end of his nose,
He gave me the bird. Up the chimney he rose.

He sprang for his truck at so hasty a pace,
That he tripped on a gable and fell flat on his face.

But I heard him burp back when he passed out of sight,
"Merry Christmas, you ****heads, now really get tight"

To all you Christian lizards a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah to those of the Jewish faith, and to any Muslims who may be reading this- please just try not to seethe so much, you'll live longer!

/Peace

LOL! How are you doing this evening Walter? Any audience problems or participation tonight?!

Closing performance.

Our stage manager (a late 40 something very progressive Boulderite) was standing near the edge of the stage, helping with seating. A man and his wife, early 60's I imagine, looked around and he decided to try to cross the stage to find a seat on the other side. The stage manager called out to him. She told him he had to come back, that he couldn't cross the stage. He folded his arms, and took ground, stopped cold and didn't move, just looked at her.

And then he wife says "well, what do you want us to do? Walk over all those other people?" (meaning, scoot down the aisle).

The stage manger got him to come back and told them to either cross the room by scooting down an aisle, or going out to the lobby, cross the lobby and use the other entrance on the other side of the theatre.

She (the stage manager) one of those "can't we all just get along" types, was shocked.

Well, I told her... "the quickest way for a liberal to become a conservative is to get mugged. And Pricilla, you just got mugged" and I walk off.

.45... too much kick... hard to put a nice tight group... give me a Beretta 9mm any day... I will put 10 rounds in a space the size of my palm from 15 metres.

Either in the chest or in the head... the miscreant can take his pick... either way he will take a quick trip to heaven.

Oh, hon. You need to see my groups!

25 yards, you can cover them with your fingers. I have no problem with the recoil, because it's straight. I have a bad time with the 9 - I find that it twists the gun in my hand.

I'm looking for first readers. One of my friends suggested that I put all the memory sections in first person, and I'm going to set my alternates for that. And it scares me, because I had some ideas of how I'd write those that made me shake.

The idea is really good, but I'm a little worried for what I'm doing to first readers. If you're interested, and you can deal with a Windows 2007 version of the doc, I'd be thrilled to let you read it.

re: #273 buzzsawmonkey

Now, with all due respect to L. Frank Baum, creator of intentionally American fairy tales, what the hell does the Wizard of Oz have to do with Christmas?

What happened to:

White Christmas
The Bells of St. Mary's
the old Miracle on 34th Street
It's a Wonderful Life (yeah, I'm tired of that too, but it's still great)
Meet John Doe
We're No Angels (sadly neglected Christmas movie)

and a host of others?

I'll tell you what happened to 'em; the TV programmers decided the moronic antics of "Elf" or the boob violence of "Home Alone" were better suited to modern-day programming.

Feh.

There is a solution- reject their programing and get your favorites on DVD (or whatever format tickles your fancy). Then you can watch real holiday programing whenever you'd like and stick it to The Man at the same time.

I believe you told me that once before. Funny, watching guys like Eric had the exact opposite effect on me. The more I saw them the more convinced I became that I could play like that and the harder I tried. Whether I ever succeeded or not is a matter of interpretation.

What is not up to interpretation however is the fact that I nearly drove myself insane with my drug use while being a professional musician. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have survived my own self inflicted stupidity in my head long plunge into insanity which was a obsessive compulsive perfectionist drive to become the best guitarist on earth.

For sure. And it has nothing to do with age or political bent. This is happening to all age groups, to all sorts of people. It's one of my biggest complaints. We have all this virtual communications tech, and people are forgetting the social conventions that have been norm for face to face, day to day interacting with live humans.

I got shifted to pretty much 70-30 front, a lot of forward extension, so the recoil comes and I just re-extend. I never lose front sight, just rock it a bit.

That is what helped my shooting and getting the pistol back into position after each shot... I am close to 50 50 with just a little more weight of the front foot.

Well then, as I suggested, leave it alone for a while. I was always surprised when I forced myself to do that (I was always writing something under a deadline!) at how much better the final version turned out when I put it aside, if for no other reason than if I read something I wrote over and over and over, after the third time or so - in a compressed time frame - I was no longer "reading it" - my mind was "seeing words" the way I thought I had written them.

Ggt, last year we got together w/ my sister and BIL to celebrate New Years in a city half-way between us (Charlottesville, VA.) We made reservations at a very expensive, nice place for dinner at 8:00 PM. In our party, all the men and boys wore coats and ties; the women and girls wore dresses.

We walked in the place and it was filled with people in t-shirts and jeans.
Not a tie in sight. T-shirts and crystal chandeliers!

Granted, C'ville is a university town, but very few of the diners were of that age.

So how are you supposed to have a fancy, special evening anymore?

Huh. So you're saying that because Clapton and other top guitarists were heavily into HEAVY drugs, you did them too, thinking it would kick you up that final notch?

Oh hell no. The drugs were a means to an end. A way of hyper focusing my attention on what I was doing. A way of blocking out the entire rest of the world so that only the music and I existed. In the end though they made me hyper paranoid and psychotic as well as destroying a good part of my memory. I very seldom play in public anymore and the reason has a lot to do with my former drug usage.

I find the best policy is to let MS do want MS wants. Then go back and manually set thing the way I want them. MS stuff can get kinda funky after awhile, some new piece will be looking for another new piece and if you didn't download it, will get all kinds of wonky.

I'll have to admit, I don't have a suit anymore. I'll have to admit, I'm just like most people, I'll dress really casual to almost anything, unless it's stated to have some sort of suggested dress code.

But I certainly haven't lost track of social niceties, even though I may dress like a hippie or something. And some of you have seen my current picture, I have hair down to by shoulder.

But no one would mistake me for a slob or a low life.

Dianna, Have you tried an IPSC type match? There are several active clubs in the Bay area, and courses of fire that involve both moving from position to position and shooting while moving are pretty common. So are various types of moving targetry. The courses of fire, except for standards and classifiers, are normally different for each match, so it does not get repetitious. By the way, I'm in Orange Co. (Cal) and we have a lot of shooting activities around here.

Maybe we could run some sort of contest, at the end of the years give the usher with the most hits a gift certificate or something.

Yup, and what do they do: put him in one of those electric collars and make him await trial in his Manhattan three floor penthouse.
I'm with JCM - he oughta be in jail where "Bubba" and his friends can, ah, keep an eye on him.
Although I do know that the court took his passport and his wife's passport too and iirc, she isn't charged with anything.
But what he has done is so heinous that sucker belongs behind bars starting yesterday.

Not sure what you mean by that.

Problem is, they've all got caught out. Suddenly the obscene fees they've been paying themselves, seem unjustified as their clients' principal has vanished. "Called to account" seems insufficient.

In this case it's just lots of people's dreams wrecked, but so far no whiffs of it hitting any big financial institutions so my guess is it floats away out of the headlines pretty fast.

You're lucky folks still dress up there. California is way to casual for me. Daughter and I were in Laguna Beach during the Easter season and asked if my nephew and his wife would join us for dinner one night. They said they would, if we joined them at their church service first. I had a skirt but it was sheer. Pounded the pavement of Laguna Beach for two hours to find a darn slip.....got a blister and everything. When we got to the church everybody was in shorts and flip-flops. LOL Not my style.

re: #581 Dianna

To be fair, I attended a memorial for a friend of mine, and, given the park we held it in, I couldn't possibly have worn anything but jeans, a heavy sweater and a parka. I felt bad about it, but it just couldn't be done any other way.

At my dad's memorial, everyone - except my brother's kids - wore fairly formal attire.

My bottom line is dress is not important. Decent social skills are. I was Catholic school all the way, 12 years, I know dressing up and I know how to be polite and treat others, that's the thing I learn in Catholic school.

It doesn't matter what you wear, just don't be an asshole and think that the world owes you everything.

Off topic. I just too half an Ambien. I was told if you take a half a dose, you can sort of use it to calm you down. And since I came off a really hard seven week run of the Christmas show, I thought I could use a little relaxant.

Well, it's a powerful little pill, isn't it.

Kinda of fun to fight it, wow... let's see who wins.

To be honest with you, I don't know when the last time was that I wore a slip. I try NEVER to wear anything that requires pantyhose or a slip. Wore than too much before I became a stay-at-home mom. I stick to nice pants with a jacket or VERY long skirts that let me get away with tights or thigh-hi's.

Although, I was in a wedding and didn't have a choice a few years ago.

Thanos my brother, you should read up on this a bit. The big losses were to big banks worldwide, from the info so far publicly available. The $50b figure is probably high, real loses (as I've said from day 1) will more likely be something like $10b, but that's still a chunk. Last rumors were that the feds might pick up losses to $500k by (stealing) from the FDIC.

Excellent point! But just before I was obliged to leave NYC, a good friend took me out for a very expensive dinner (on him, no less!) at a very fine restaurant - the name of which, naturally, escapes me now - but if you weren't wearing a suit or a sports jacket, they'd loan you one of theirs - and by and large the clientele was well dressed. I was impressed and told the Owner so.
His response was something to the effect that the "Dining experience is improved by the apparel and appearance of the diners".

These would be outdoor ranges/ clubs. There is for sure a good group in Richmond- don't know how close that is, but the clubs welcome guests, and women who are competent are especially admired. You could try USPSA.org (IIRC- I have it linked and never look at the address) and they will have a listing of local clubs, most of whom will have sites of their own with calendars of events. USPSA also has video clips of courses of fire from matches. If you have not seen them, check it out. MUCH more fun than anything any of the indoor ranges will let you do. No advance booking or notice is necessary- show up with gun, holster, extra mags and shoes you can run in, eyes and ears, and you WILL be welcomed!

I was 12 when I started playing guitar. Never touched heroin, thank god.... No my problems were with coke and crystal. Both of which allowed me to practice for very long extended amounts of time, 16 to 20 hours at a stretch. And I didn't start using them until I was in my late teens or early twenties. By the time I reached my mid thirties those drugs were literally making me psychotic so I had to stop. I am 10 years clean now.

Hey Syrah - it's funny, when the first "dress down" or "Casual Friday" hit our law firm, I hit the roof! Talked with the managing partner and said I thought that, since we were supposed to BE professionals, we damn well ought to look like it - not to mention that I think in certain business environments, folks are more serious about their work if they are wearing at least a sports coat and tie (though I prefer suit and tie myself).
I lost the argument to the old "Well xyz lawfirm and abc lawfirm are doing it so why shouldn't we." I just gave up in disgust. But I never dressed down at work. Exactly.

Whether you are digging ditches, doing research, or filing briefs, you should wear "Work" clothes. "The hat makes the man" the old saying goes and I believe it to be true. People's behavior IS affected by the clothes that they wear.

I don't want my employees behaving like they are at home lounging in front of the boob tube popping bon-bons and swilling bear. I want them focused on making the company enough money to be worthy of their paychecks.

Oh well. I can't win every battle.

Today's music kills me. Here we have this immense production the likes which haven't been seen since Paul sang Hey Jude way back when, but the BF song, if you can call it that sucks. Ok, here's why plain and simple: Sing Hey Jude...sure you may be one who can't hold 3 notes together, but somehow you can still manage to sing something resembling this tune, perhaps not to the delight of others, but it can be sung by almost everyone. Why? Because there's a powerful melody with an amazing hook.

Now Ben Fold's song: try singing it...having trouble? Well, perhaps you can get the 1---2---3---part right. I rest my case.

Oh and I bet you and 5 friends could sing Hey Jude in unison, but not this Ben Folds tune...no way.
