BTW, Shar, found a copy of The Anatomy of Fascism on Saturday. Should be a very interesting read. I also got another book at the same time, a new book: New Deal or Raw Deal? by Burton Folsom, Jr. Got through the first few chapters already. Most interesting, and pulls no punches on FDR's New Deal. Oddly enough, FDR seems to have had the same understanding of economics as BHO.

Ordered it.

I must say - the Lizard book recommendations are and have been outstanding! I've learned more since I became a lizard meself than when I was still looking at reviews in the msm.

Thanks everyone for those brilliant reads!

LOL! I'm enjoying it, took the kids out for a walk yesterday, lots of fun. This kind of thing happens so seldom we really aren't prepared, infrastructure wise for it. It's an economic decisions spent tons of money for gear that gets used once every 10 years or so. Plus Seattle has hills, and drivers that don't have experience in the stuff. Adds up to a monumental mess.

My sister is one of those drivers. She is not a good driver at the best of times, but apparently she got stuck on a hill and left her car to walk somewhere. I understand she saw that collision the other day that had that bus hanging off the over pass. (During her walk.)
OTOH over here on the east side we have more experience and a few less hills so we aren't doing too bad. We've got about 8" and I hear it may get up in the 20's. Woohoo! I have to admit I am happy about the white Christmas.

Fort Dix five guilty of conspiracy to kill soldiers

Five Muslim immigrants from South Jersey were convicted today of plotting to kill American soldiers, a crime that prosecutors said demonstrated how Al Qaeda was using the Internet to recruit, train and incite supporters for attacks in the United States and around the world.

Jurors at federal district court in Camden deliberated into a sixth day before declaring the men guilty of conspiracy. The jurors, however, acquitted the men of an additional charge of attempted murder.

Along with the verdict, the jurors sent U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler a note explaining the serious nature of their deliberations.

"The burden imposed on us has been heavy, but we are confident our verdict has been reached fairly and impartially," according to the jurors' note Kugler read aloud in court.

re: #216 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Did you at least open your window so he could hear your laughter?

That would be needlessly cruel, unless you know for certain that the poor sap got himself in the ditch by virtue of his own stupidity.

Think: "There, but for the grace of God, go I." It's quite possible the fellow had to take the ditch to avoid being hit by another vehicle. I spend a lot of time on unpaved industrial roads, that in Winter, are nothing but narrow strips of hard-packed snow, maybe a lane and half in width. If I meet a bed truck with a D9 Cat or a rig substructure on it, I will take the ditch to avoid a collision that could decapitate my truck (and me with it). It's the done thing. And most of the time, if one takes the ditch in such an avoidance maneuver, the trucker will stop, and offer a pull out. You don't leave people in the ditch, miles from civilization, in -30 weather.

I should point out that most of these ditches are in fact a broad, shallow swale, with several feet of drifted and plow-thrown snow. It provides for a pretty soft landing, but when you hit it, you are planted. On many of these roads, they use radio control, and you provide yourself with a VHF radio, and call your position and direction at each kilometer post. I might say, "pickup, empty, thirteen," indicating a small vehicle, outbound from the zero marker at 13 km. A vehicle going the other way would call "loaded". This convention is based on how the log-hauler trucks (major users of the roads) operate, empty from the mill to the loading point, and loaded back from the loading point to the mill. All other users follow this convention, even if they are hauling goods out to be dropped off, and plan to return empty.

More than you needed to know, eh?

Gunman 'requests Pakistan help'

India says the sole surviving gunman from last month's Mumbai (Bombay) attacks has sought help from Pakistan.

The request came in a letter handed to Pakistani diplomats in Delhi.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab, who is in Indian custody, admitted in the letter that he and the other attackers were from Pakistan, Indian officials said.

Pakistani officials say they are studying the contents of the letter. Islamabad has so far refused to acknowledge the gunmen were Pakistani.

And to think that it was the result of an alert Circuit City store clerk who tipped off law enforcement to these terrorists.

Remember, Mohammed, if you are caught or killed, the ISI will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Good luck Mohammed. This recording will self destruct in 10 seconds.

I am not prone to emotionality, but I find myself very emotional about the Fort Dix convictions of these terrorist predators. I have served as a USO volunteer for several years feeding the troops as they leave for the "sandbox" through McGuire Airforce base and upon their arrival back through Fort Dix.

They arrive by the hundreds covered in sand, faces weary, carrying their weapons. Many of them are older, reservists, dentists, doctors, engineers teachers; some are young enough to be my own children. I especially marvel at the young blonde-haired girls who would look more at home on a sunny beach than in camo - and carrying a weapon almost 1/2 their size.

Thank God for President Bush and VP Cheney and their unrelenting commitment to keeping us safe. God bless the young clerk who said after viewing the terrorists video, "WTF" and then had the courage to act like a REAL AMERICAN and get involved although doing so would risk his safety.

This is so damn close to home - I'm in a bit of shock to tell the truth. And a special FU to Bill Ayers whose team of geniuses also attempted to bomb a dance at Fort Dix - he rightly belongs in prison, too.

By MATT APUZZO

WASHINGTON (AP) - It's something any bank would demand to know before handing out a loan: Where's the money going?

But after receiving billions in aid from U.S. taxpayers, the nation's largest banks say they can't track exactly how they're spending the money or they simply refuse to discuss it.

"We've lent some of it. We've not lent some of it. We've not given any accounting of, 'Here's how we're doing it,'" said Thomas Kelly, a spokesman for JPMorgan Chase, which received $25 billion in emergency bailout money. "We have not disclosed that to the public. We're declining to."

The Associated Press contacted 21 banks that received at least $1 billion in government money and asked four questions: How much has been spent? What was it spent on? How much is being held in savings, and what's the plan for the rest?

None of the banks provided specific answers."

Former Conservative cabinet minister Michael Portillo:

Britain has lost the stomach for a fight

The extent of Britain’s fiasco has been masked by the media’s relief that we are at last leaving Iraq. Those who have been urging Britain to quit are not in a strong position to criticise the government’s lack of staying power. Reporting of Basra has mainly focused on British casualties and the prospect for withdrawal. The British media and public have shown scant regard for our failure to protect Iraqis, so the British nation, not just its government, has attracted distrust. We should reflect on what sort of country we have become. We may enjoy patronising Americans but they demonstrate a fibre that we now lack.

The United States will have drawn its conclusions about our reliability in future and British policy-makers, too, will need to recognise that we lack the troops, wealth and stomach for anything more than the briefest conflict.

Not good.

Obama Planning to Scrap Shuttle Replacement, Says NASA

President-Elect Obama's transition team is planning to scrap NASA's Ares program, the successor to the Space Shuttle, say NASA advisors. The transition team is demanding deep cuts from the agency, and is investigating whether old military rockets such as the Delta IV and Atlas V could be used in place of Ares.

NASA plans a permanent moon base by 2020, followed by a manned mission to Mars; plans which the agency says require Ares.

The Space Shuttle is due to make its last flight in 2010. Without a replacement, NASA may be without a manned space capability entirely, for the first time since the 1960s, a gap that NASA says would destroy the U.S.'s primacy in space technology.

Prior news reports have hinted at a great deal of tension between Obama's team and NASA, a report that NASA Administrator Michael Griffon has denied.

On the campaign trail, Obama blew both hot and cold on plans for NASA's budget. In the NASA-friendly states of Texas and Florida, he promised to expand NASA's budget by more than 10%. In other states, however, he promised cuts and delays to the agency, in order to help fund his education policies.

Lori Garver, a space policy advisor for Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, was selected by Obama to lead the NASA review transition team. Despite being criticized for her lack of an engineering or scientific background, Garver has been called a favorite to be the next NASA Administrator.

Ares program manager Steve Cook says that, with Ares due for its first test flight next summer, halting the program now would be an expensive mistake. "We would be really stepping backwards" by opting for a different launch platform.

Space Historian Andrew Chaikin said that, "Obama's first priority for NASA should be to get the Shuttle's replacement on track".

It was a federal trial, but keep in mind that the Fort Dix terrorists were caught domestically, using traditional law enforcement techniques and evidenciary rules, which cannot and should never apply to someone captured on a battlefield. After all, who is going to Mirandize a terrorist who is fighting US forces with RPGs and AK gunfire and happens to get himself captured by US forces in some godforsaken crapistan. How exactly does the Federal Rules of Evidence apply in that situation. It shouldn't. It can't. Yet, that's the direction that the far left wants to go.

A simple modification to the Miranda rules would fix the conundrum...'You have the right to remain eternally silent'...

Dec 22, 9:52 AM (ET)

* NASA: $416.7 billion; inflation adjusted $851.2 billion

Data from James Bianco

That gives us a grand total of $3.92 trillion. I wouldn’t blink because we are going to pass that number with the bailout costs before you know it. Bianco reports that the only event that came close to the costs of the bailout up to this point is World War II. WWII cost $288 billion. Adjusting the numbers for inflation and we’re looking at $3.6 trillion. Still, if you add the cost of WWII and the rest of the above mentioned fiscal expenditures and it falls short of the $8.5 trillion number stated by SFGate.

Dear reader, all said and done, the bailout of the U.S. financial system will have cost more than two times the list of the greatest expenditures in the history of our nation. What folks don’t realize is that WE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS. The costs will be years and possibly decades of economic stresses. Welcome to freaking Japan. Short government bonds anyone?

Anyone feeling wild?

Anyone overstating then?

Yea, must be me and the other freaks who want to see some accountability and reason. That's way too much to ask for.
