Saddleback Pastor Rick Warren to speak at King memorial

Just one day before giving the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration, a local pastor will be the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Commemorative Service, officials at Saddleback Church said.

Rick Warren – pastor of the 22,000-member Saddleback Church – made national headlines in recent days when proponents of gay marriage criticized the selection of Warren to give the invocation at President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration.

The service is scheduled for Jan. 19 at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and is included in the official program of the 10-day King Center's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, which begins on Jan. 10.

My brother-in-laws brother used to preach at Willie Nelson's mother's church. About once a year Willie would show up in nice shined shoes, three piece suit and his hair fixed in a traditional masculine style. Willie's mother didn't subscribe to no hippie churchgoin' ways.

About 30 years ago, I worked with a girl whose brother got drunk on Christmas Eve, staggered home, tried to jump over a wooden fence, got hung up, and was found the next morning frozen to death upside down.

No, no, I usually leave my really morbid sense of humor at the door of LGF, I just slipped there, Enjoy.

We did two of the stories, both were operetta's and the other story was O. Henry's "The LAst Leaf." I wanted a Twilight Zone ending where you find Mr. Behrmann hanging in the alley, with a brush, a pallet, green and white paint and the leaf that he painted on the vine. That would have been kickass.

Sure, there are plenty of hateful people who will always hold on to their bigotry like a child to a blanket. Just about every caller thinks he or she will be the first caller ever to get Dr Laura to abandon her core priciples especially for them. And they are always disappointed. She calls a wench a wench and a boar a boar.

You would also think that if they were regular listeners of the show, they'd have an idea what the doctor would tell them. A lot of times, I think people want to be told their poor decision is okay. It's quite possible they did ask a friend, who didn't tell them what they wanted to hear, so they turn to another source hoping to get a different answer. Rarely works that way.

Montel Williams, pimping a commemorative coin with Obama and George Washington, another coin with Obama and JFK, a Hawaii quarter with Obama's face, and something else.

I know Obama's got nothing to do with this worship, but my respect for him would go up if he'd publicly say that this is getting a little out of hand for a guy who hasn't even been inaugurated yet.

Exactly- I had someone once avoid telling me something until after the fact because she knew damn good and well I would have told her not to do it had she asked me beforehand.

I think people usually seek out a second opinion on advice when they want to hear their bad decision will somehow work out alright. It's not often people need advice when they know their decision is good and sound as it's usually self-evident.

How many Lizards are not celebrating Christmas, either for religious reasons, finances, just not into it, no family or friends, whatever.

Well, to answer my own question. My girlfriend, Sylvia, who is 58, lost her husband three years ago, and her life went downhill from there. Her hold career had to be put on hold, she lost many clients and now she is working retail in a shop she use to sell to. So, on the finance side, not a lot of cheer.

And I'm a 56 year old starving theatre person, so we are not doing anything fancy, no tree, no decorations. I made a few extra dollars this week fixing a programmer task at Kaiser, so that was sort of a Christmas bonus, and I spent it on her.

We are going to try to get in all 21 episodes of season one of LOST. She has fallen in love with it, but she is 4 seasons behind and the 5th season starts on Jan 21st.

I'm going to try to get her caught up somehow, without camping in front of the TV for the next 30 days.

Merry Christmas.

I'm a little confused too. It's interesting to watch though. Where is all this outrage headed?

It's the ultimate sin for the left: hypocrisy.

Me? I don't particularly care about Rick Warren. Though I'm glad that he wrote his book, since it seems to have saved the life of a woman kidnapped by a murderous thug.

For that, and that alone, I'll credit him with decent intent and some meaning.

Christmas plans...

I was heading down to L.A. to see family and friends, but I now seem to be fighting off some sort of cold or flu. Driving hundreds of miles in stormy weather, and then bouncing around various social engagements in a strange city, is not my idea of a good path to recovery. So it's looking like I might have the first Christmas alone in my 48 years.

If Obama gets me a unicorn that farts rainbows, it'll probably be three legged and orange and the rainbow will be missing a few colors.

That's only because Bush screwed up the economy and some of them other colors is expensive. Don't even talk to me about Unicorn legs. :)

I don't understand you answer. And I will assume it's humor that I am not getting. RIght?

Kind of.
I used to work in a medical X-Ray field service job with this retired sailor ... he was 55 at the time.
During a performance review, he got accused of trying to put the make on a young (25 yr old) employee at a hospital in Casper, Wyoming.

He stood up, looked the supervisor right in the eye (in front of me and another service engineer) and said "I don't date babies, goddammit. Get that straight. Now if you want to accuse me of trying for Mary, that's another matter, but it's still none of your f*cking business."
Mary was 50 years old. Three years later, this guy quit, moved to Montana, and took Mary with him.

I always looked up to him, especially for the attitude and honesty.
He'd be close to 90 years old by now. I hope the both of them are still alive and enjoying each other.

My wife, in fact, is a year older than me.
At a party about a month ago, somebody found out that fact.

Dr. Laura was young once (as were many of us), and did not make the best decisions about her life (as did many of us), and her mistakes and bad decisions led her to where she is today (as similar mistakes and bad decisions have led some of us to where we are today), and whether one likes her or not (and I happen to like her for her apparent sincerity and consistency), she is a better person today than she was then (as are many of us).

Another workplace square peg!

For some odd reason, my recurring unpleasant dream (not intense enough to be a "nightmare") is the classic one about being in college, needing one last class to graduate, and realizing that I had never been in that class, and that finals are tomorrow.

I actually lived that nightmare once: For my master's degree I had to pass a series of "competency exams". You could take them as many times as it took to pass but you had to pass them to graduate. I couldn't pass the ear training exam (transcribing played music into written form). For years the exam was given at 7 or 8 PM. after failing it numerous times I arrived at one of my last chances and they switched the exam time to 8 AM. I nearly shit a pickle when I showed up 12 hours late for one of my last chances!

re: #327 Dianna

Sal? Check the numbers.

Black and hispanic voters may have raised the percentage, but the majority of Californians voted for Prop 8. They had a lot of different reasons, but the majority did, indeed, support it.

According to the Fields Poll, taken Oct. 18-28:

[Link: ballotpedia.org...]
Percentages Yes No
White non-Hispanic 44 50
Latino 46 48
African-American 49 43
Asian-American 41 51

Of course, there is a gay corollary to the Bradley effect, where people would vote for it, but would be hesitant to admit as much to a pollster. The margin of defeat was 5%. But the polled percentages indicate that it received much more support among blacks and Hispanics (particularly blacks) than it did among whites and Asians.

I can't stand Dr. Laura's advice, but I do like her voice, she's tough and not bad looking (IMO). I would.

I'd seen one or two of the Dr. Laura Stark Raving Nude photos before, but never the whole set -- obviously she's not "my type," but she was a very cute young woman, and if I were hetero guy I think I'd find those pics extremely sexy. In fact, even as a homo, I find them "sexy," albeit in a sort of abstract and intellectual way, and not on the level of my gut (or below) -- just because she seems relaxed and happy and comfortable showing herself off to her lover.

Too bad she apparently went on to loathe that part of herself.

To be fair? She believes firmly - from what I've heard her say - in orgasms and having a very good time, so long as it's inside marriage. She even says that straightforward porn - good looking people simply having sex - isn't a horrible thing.

So what she loathes, so far as I can tell, are the things that lead to disaster. Her definitions and other peoples' may vary, widely.

Interesting perspective, Throb. I'm as str8 as a yardstick, and I have a similar take on men's bodies -- they're nice to admire aesthetically, in the abstract.

With women, on the other hand, there's always that voice inside me, echoing up from my loins to my brain, growling, "Come to Butthead!"

He said "Try and imagine that your parents tried to teach you to want to have sex with men. " BTW, they getting him to switch teams, but damn near caused him to kill himself before they gave up. It molded my opinions on the issue way early.

On some points, I think she's off her rocker. I thought her response to her past was exactly right, but that's because (angels and ministers of grace preserve us!) I have done any number of things that I look back on with ... awe ... is perhaps a nice word.

Interesting video on modern Christmas's pagan roots.

History of Christmas

Your link was a load of Christmas cheer. I watched the whole series on that page where the link took me, so I now know all these facts about Christmas, candy canes, yule logs and Christmas trees (with apples--later becoming ornaments--to represent the Garden of Eden ), Santa Claus, and the whole works. I have a hankering for ribbon candy now, and those fun old bubble lights. In between all the videos, in real life, carolers came to my door, about 15 or 20, it looked like, sang, and then handed me a plate of goodies! I need a cup of hot chocolate with a candy cane stir stick, and the nostalgia meter is at the top!

re: #470 yochanan

I don't think the "problem" is with this website (or the discussions which take place here). I see another problem (and it's far more dangerous, imo, to both Jews and Christians)...it has to do with politics and "religious" individuals such as Rick Warren. (Let us consider for a moment why certain Muslims seem to so like Rick Warren, and why Rick Warren is seemingly so enamoured with Muslims...have you given this any thought? I have a few tentative hypotheses to answer that question (as to why Obama/certain Muslims/Warren are happily engaged with one another...it's not just that Warren likes to go to Syria and kiss the murderers, or just plain and simple antisemitism...it's something else also...which I've been thinking about...it has to do with historicity...or "truth in history." If someone really didn't like Christianity, how would you undercut it? what is the quickest and easiest means? I believe it's what many Muslims do...Ironically it's also what "pastors" such as Rick Warren -- and imo there many, many others just like him -- also do...One of the "puzzles" which for a long time caused me to wonder was why would Christians spend so much time searching for things such as "the ark." Why? I never understood this -- but I now suspect it has to do with establishing "historiocity" -- that event X actually took place in historic time...some Christians thus realize, consciously or unconsciously, the necessity to establish "event X occurred in history" -- unlike Judaism, Christianity, to a much, much greater extent relies upon this...that is, the verficiation that event X occurred and is not a "myth". Ironcially, of course, given the bizarre anti-scientific views of a Rick Warren (the notion that dinosaurs co-existed with humans, etc), Warren undercuts "truth in history" (and unwittingly kicks the legs out from under Christianity at the same time)...as do many religious Muslims...(anyway, just my thoughts...)

472 daughter of patriots  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 8:38:44am

I haven't been spending much time here lately, only lurking to see what's on the board for discussion...and am disturbed to see those of faith, the faith of our fathers who'd initially stepped on these shores, bringing their faith that brought true freedom now being equated with nuttery and hate. I would that someone could spell out for me the difference between a hate crime and a crime. Does a murderer hate their victim, regardless of what they do or do not do - in the bedroom? When is a Christian a Christian - was it the so called Christians in Germany who'd allowed the swastika to replace the cross? Or was it those who'd protected the Jews et al "miscreants" to the death?

Where is the deeper dialogue?

473 Yank in the EU  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 9:59:40am

re: #470 yochanan

FWIW, this is the sole reason I stopped posting here quite a while ago. It's not so much the secular liberal view of social conservatism and religious conservatism that is per se problematic -- strong differences of views naturally make for interesting and great debate. But rather what is after a long time intellectually impoverishing and corrosive of decency is a fairly accepted and thorough-going climate of contempt, condescension, distortion of the opposing views, particularly evangelical Christians and Catholics. One of the easiest examples is the habitual derision and very demonstrative lack of respect (often on the front page) for those people who through their faith hold to a literal Creation account or view there to be some value in the classical doctrine of natural teleology. [Just so there is no unclarity on that last point, as a Catholic I view evolutionary science and divine creation to entirely compatible in all facets, and while I find weak and strange many of the arguments currently found for Intelligent Design, I do think there is profound value in the metaphysical doctrines of natural teleology (i.e. ID) to be found in Aristotle, Aquinas, Leibniz, and other pillars of Western thought and science.]

Well, it would be somewhat missing the point to spend a lot of time digging up dirt and so forth. That is, I'm really not looking to indict anyone or make anyone look bad. Rather, this point was to express my sincere thoughts (which I summarized clearly enough) about why this zone for discussion had become a fairly intellectually homogeneous, dead end (i.e. for someone who takes social and religious conservative positions). I realize they are highly critical of a place I once greatly enjoyed, yet times sometimes call for this. This was something made abundantly clear over many cases and for a long period of time. But if it is examples and concrete statements that you absolutely need, OK.

Take the name you mentioned, Adnan Oktar, the fundamentalist Islamic creationist. When the posts were made about this, the language on the front page and the discussion clearly implied a basic connection to creationism as such and to Intelligent Design as such. On behalf of decent people who may take a very simple, faith-centered view of the cause of nature, this is certainly an offensive and hostile way to go about making one's case against Creationism and ID, a polemic which was already well-established in this domain. The broadness of claims suggested of a kind of 'guilt by association' and a sloppy smearing of all such people on that side of the issue, namely that in their faith in the literal Creation account or in their appreciation of some form of natural teleology (whether of Aristotle and Aquinas or of weaker modern forms) all of these people are connected to religious fascists who seek to subvert the course of science and force their religious views in the classroom. There may be some malicious and illiberal (in the classic sense) groups in our countries that intend this as well, but it does not justify broadly linking all people with these views together.

Here is another very clear example of what I would term a secular liberal fascist attitude toward religious conservatives on the issues involving evolution and creation in the public square. Consider carefully the following statement, repeated ad nauseum: "Belief in God does not preclude belief in evolution. Belief in evolution does not preclude belief in God. Do not trust those who insist otherwise." Now as I have stated, I am a strict compatibilist on this issue, and have defended evolutionary science in public. But let's say someone either from their faith or from their scientific / theological / philosophical reasoning sees in some form or other a fundamental conflict between the two. Are they to be distrusted, shunned, or mocked? There's a strong element of intolerance, here, of people who intellectually view the matter on this complex issue of evolution and creation differently, where honest minds may well easily differ. That kind of message, stated over and over, is to program and to normalize an attitude that is explicitly hostile to many religious conservatives, who come at many of these issues from a source of deep faith and who have no intention of subverting democracy or science. Hope that's all clear enough.

Well, it would be somewhat missing the point to spend a lot of time digging up dirt and so forth. That is, I'm really not looking to indict anyone or make anyone look bad.

In other words, you can't point to anything specific, so you'll just smear the whole site in general with accusations of intolerance based on imagined slights and thin-skinned over-sensitivity. You're even pissed off about a message that's intended to promote tolerance.

It's blazingly intolerant to say that belief in evolution makes you an atheist, and that religious people have to accept a fundamental conflict between creationism and evolution. Now that you can't support your original accusations, you're digging for some kind of twisted rationale to justify them.

481 Yank in the EU  Wed, Dec 24, 2008 8:44:03am

re: #480 Charles

Now you seem intent on making this very personal and confrontational. You're wrong; I did point to cases with a sufficient amount of specificity. There can be no doubt that you made numerous statements that connected, and at times even equate, in general terms Islamic fundamentalism and Christian creationists.

Your kind of tolerance message is something Orwell would greatly appreciate, with the elements of irony and radical intolerance blended unconsciously together.

And this repeated nonsense about being "thin-skinned" is a case of your wrongly and quite blindly interpreting someone else's psychological state.

There's a huge difference between being personally offended and insulted, and seeing a homogeneous discourse and a pervasive secular liberal attitude toward social and religious conservatism as something wrong in itself and culturally destructive.

In fact, it occurs to me much more that thin-skinnedness enters, rather, in your the inability to dispassionately stand any criticism, to calmly look someone in eye (so to speak) and take their points on these issues with complete seriousness, and in generally the practicing of banning voices of many people who do think for themselves and without an abusive manner express serious dissent on such matters. Let's be honest, the later does tend to happen now and then.

Apparently, you didn't notice that are actual connections between Christian creationists and Islamic creationists...

No, I'm well aware of this, I condemn it strongly, and salute the effort to expose these naive fools. But, and this was my precise problem, connected to this were many statements " in general terms" about the identity of the threat from Islamic fundamentalism and Christian creationists. This is to imply that all the people that take this very simple, faith-derived view are equally worthy of condemnation by association and distrust. They aren't. A great many people who take a literal view of creation disagree with any sort of action which conflicts with principles in the constitution.

re: #481 Yank in the EU

Consider carefully the following statement, repeated ad nauseum: "Belief in God does not preclude belief in evolution. Belief in evolution does not preclude belief in God. Do not trust those who insist otherwise." Now as I have stated, I am a strict compatibilist on this issue, and have defended evolutionary science in public. But let's say someone either from their faith or from their scientific / theological / philosophical reasoning sees in some form or other a fundamental conflict between the two. Are they to be distrusted, shunned, or mocked?

And on this, my answer is a resounding YES. Anyone who insists that you cannot possibly reconcile acceptance of evolutionary science with belief in God should absolutely not be trusted. You call it intolerance -- I call it resisting fanaticism.

re: #486 Charles

So, once again, say some person from out of their own sincere thinking -- on any level, from the highest position in science or the lowliest blue collar worker -- arrives at the conclusion that there may be a deep conflict between a divine creator and evolution. By this intellectual understanding and view, they ought to be mistrusted, scorned as a fanatic, and presumably ostracized? This is a without exaggerating a secular liberal fascist attitude, bent on controlling people's thought and determining acceptable discourse, or what kinds of Christians are acceptable. Certain large groups of Christians are most definitely persona non grata in this twisted universe, merely for a difference in view on a complex, controversial topic. It seems reasonable, well-intentioned people should be able to think through their varying ideas and discuss them, without such radical and hysterical intolerance.

You mean like Christians telling others they're going to hell because they don't accept Biblical literalism? That kind of well-intentioned, reasonable discussion? Or is that the hysterical intolerance?

re: #488 Sharmuta

This is just badly reasoned, and it also departs from the point.

We are discussing one type of hysterical intolerance, not the one you wish to introduce.

But on your example: You're throwing out a statement that can mean a great many things. It all depends on the context of how they express what they believe. Even the most lukewarm, socially liberal, and moderate of a believer will have to maintain, if they are at all consistent, that some people are going to hell. A soteriology is nothing fantatical in itself or necessarily intolerant, but a basic aspect of belief in God and Final Judgment.

This is really silly. You're not arguing honestly. First, you still haven't provided even one example of my supposed "general intolerance." And you never will, because it doesn't exist in any of the posts I've made.

Second, you're twisting my words again in your attempt to prove something that isn't true. This is what I wrote:

Anyone who insists that you cannot possibly reconcile acceptance of evolutionary science with belief in God should absolutely not be trusted.

If someone "arrives at the conclusion" that there's a conflict between evolution and religion, and that this means they have to reject science, that's their choice. In my opinion, it's a sad, delusional choice that limits their futures and their children's futures (if they teach it to their children, which they will). But it's their choice, and I've always said (and meant) that I respect their right to make that choice.

The part I do not respect, and cannot respect, and reject demands that I respect, is when they start to insist that everyone has to make the same limiting, self-defeating choice -- or they are "atheists" or worse, and doomed to burn in Hell for it.

That is intolerance, and that is fanaticism, and that, very clearly, is what I mean when I write, "Do not trust those who insist otherwise."

No, it's not badly reasoned, and it only departs from the point you want to make.

Of course- but you were the one , like so many others, to come in here and start the insults. You have not been called a fascist, so it's much easier for you to just dismiss my point than think about just who is calling who names and being insulting. If anything, it's the people you're trying to defend that have been hysterical and intolerant.

As to the rest of your comment- that is poorly reasoned. Context? The evolutionary supporters are not the ones lying about their intentions on this blog, or in front of school boards and judges, yet it's they who are getting sent to hell by your "well-intentioned, reasonable" creationists. How's that for context?!

And frankly- after the vlaams belang threads, I am shocked to see you of all people lightly tossing around the term "fascist". Very disappointing.

I sincerely do not agree, and, on the contrary, I am arguing honestly and without agitation. I really have no inclination whatsover to spend hours searching through archives (which obviously would not incredibly difficult but just tedious), and, moreover this seems entirely beside the point: it's not an indictment, but a perspective that has become more evident over time. I sufficiently referenced as immediate examples the broad generalizations connecting Christian creationists and Islamic fundamentalists, as well as the tolerance message. I honestly think that should be good enough to make my point, even if you insist on disagreeing on its content.

If someone "arrives at the conclusion" that there's a conflict between evolution and religion, and that this means they have to reject science, that's their choice.

It does not necessarily follow that if someone sees such a difficulty between God and evolution (which again I personally do not) that they have to take the drastic measure of 'rejecting science'. Surely many great scientific thinkers historically have taken similar views, which were not yet sold on the complete evolutionary theory. There may be even be strongly atheistic scientists who view their to be such a conflict -- in fact, I know very well there are and they are fairly influential within their scientific circles / debates, and people of faith ought to be willing to treat them alike with respect and dignity. It's one thing to criticize someone strongly for their views and an another to say they, personally, are to be distrusted, which has an element of radical intolerance to different thinking.

Those reasonable and honest persons who through their limited human thinking and understanding have arrived at the view that there may be a conflict should be treated with respect as part of the debate and the society. To say that people who come to such a view, which can take on a huge variety of forms from the most simplest to the most sophisticated, are in principle to be distrusted is plain radical intolerance and shows a fundamental lack of humility.

Anyway, I believe I have clearly expressed my view and said my piece. Hopefully, but I doubt it from all these childish negative messages with the "-1s" etc., this is received as a genuine criticism and apologia, agree or disagree with the content, and not an effort to insult or condemn personally.

That's how I feel about it, too.

The part I most object to is a church making ignorance a requirement for salvation and eternal life.

If a minister or church were to say, "Here's why we disagree with evolution, but you are free to make up your own minds," they would be allowing believers to use their God-given brains and also to exist comfortably in today's world with today's science and knowledge.

But to say, "You must not accept or even consider this specific scientific knowledge -- in fact, you must fear it -- because acceptance of such information will cause you to go to hell," is to condemn people in this modern age to a life of mental servitude.

It takes a huge amount of energy to control one's thoughts and guard against the "secular world" to such a degree that one must become fanatical in order to self-perpetuate the cult mind.

I object to any church or religion that requires fanaticism: it is an unhealthy, unproductive and ultimately unhappy way to live.

I've said what I have to say on this subject; you're continuing to argue against straw men and slanted mischaracterizations of what I believe and what I've written, so I'm finished discussing it with you - except to note that you have not made one valid point, contrary to your assertions.

re: #495 Charles

Very well. Of course, I disagree about the 'valid points' part. I think I have made points that very briefly express several underlying truths.

497 Pelayo  Wed, Dec 24, 2008 7:34:40pm

In my personal view both creationism (a belief that Genesis 1-2 is a photographically literal account of the what occurred) and materialistic evolutionism (the idea that human beings are the product of blind natural forces acting without purpose and human beings are purely physical creatures), are incorrect.

On the other hand if my choices are that people believe either than all mankind was created in God's image as the Genesis account states, or that they believe human beings are a cosmic accident and purely physical, I would take the former.

The reason is because the former belief would tend to lead human beings to treat each other as having a special dignity within the created order, while the latter belief would tend to lead to the belief that human existence is of no special significance in the universe.

While both versions in my judgment are false, I fear the effects of the one more than the other.
