Is this HBO?

HBO programmers have a bad habit of occasionally showing the same movie 48 times in a month. It may be a classic, but by the time it comes out of the rotation, you hate that film with a passion.

16 Mich-again  Mon, Dec 22, 2008 8:42:59pm

The string are doubled, either they are octaves or the same note. I also play a mean renaissance 8 course lute which has 16 individual strings. I wish I could afford an Archlute which has 11-16 courses.

re: #19 Alouette

Yentl is missable, bits can be examined dispassionately without letting the construct drown you, it might be better as Youtube clips. While Fiddler is flawed as a movie, the odd shifts from reality to fantasy work better on a stage and the technical level was not quite up to it then, might come off better if made now, on the whole it is a good story, good songs, good professionals.

"occasionally" - how about most of the time, especially with bad films - the really bad movies they give to Cinemax to put on the air - over and over and over again!
We don't get HBO or Cinemax simply because of that fact - they will play the same damn movies about 20 or more times a month.

Lyrics for the perverts...

Come again! sweet love doth now invite
Thy graces that refrain
To do me due delight,
To see, to hear, to touch, to kiss, to die,
With thee again in sweetest sympathy.

Come again! that I may cease to mourn
Through thy unkind disdain;
For now left and forlorn
I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die
In deadly pain and endless misery.

All the day the sun that lends me shine
By frowns doth cause me pine
And feeds me with delay;
Her smiles, my springs that makes my joy to grow,
Her frowns the winter of my woe.

All the night my sleeps are full of dreams,
My eyes are full of streams.
My heart takes no delight

Ha! That's an Oud, from which the Europeans developed the lute. The Spanish, bitter about the Moorish occupation preferred the guitar (a more distant cousin. It all rocks.

Yeah, me too, though I suspect the Giants may rest some players - notably Brandon Jacobs - it's only an important game for the Giants to keep some momentum going, as they already are the #1 seed in the NFC, have a bye week during playoffs, and all their playoff games (except, of course, for the Superbowl!) will be played in real football weather at Giants Stadium.
So the game with the Vike's may not be such a great game.

Odd how one of the main parts of the pattern is a Star of David.

It's not really that odd because the Jews survived in Moorish Morocco longer than they did in Spain after the Christians took in back and held inquisitions etc. Also the Star of David, as a geometric pattern would have been tolerated under Islamic law because it was not representative of a living creature. If it was a carving of a flower or a bird they'd chop off yer figgin head but in those days a geometric pattern would have been acceptable.

Drive by post...one of the nicest surprises in my whole life...a friend who lives in London's daughter has been working here for a year. She is a bank exec, and her bank sent her over. She is like a part of our family, as are my friend's other 3 kids (all adults) and grandkids..and our kids stay at her home when they go to London, and hers stay with us. We were pen friends after WWII, and are friends for almost 57 years. Her late Mum called us her twins, separated at birth, by an ocean. Our birthdays are a few weeks apart..same age.

Her daughter was coming for a good-by lunch, and my husband picked her up at the train station, as it is frigid here..21 right now, and all day in the low 20's. He was sitting in the car, waiting for the train. My friend's daughter was walking to the car, and my husband looked up, and saw my friend with a big grin on her face! When they walked in? I was in shock! She came over to go to the Ballet with her daughter, and keep her company on the flight back today. My 4 kids all knew! They all went out to lunch with them a few days ago, and managed to keep the secret.

I am still in shock. Her husband is getting the rest of the Christmas decorating done. She forgot to take a photo of the look on my face when she walked in! I am so glad she forgot...we both were crying. It is hard when you are in your 70's to see someone who is family for so long leave...I can no longer travel, so I hope with all my heart that she and her husband will come over again.

I hope everyone has an experience as wonderful! I am off to sleep, as we have to go to see our grandson and take care of him, as my daughter was 43 Monday, and my son in law is taking her out to dinner tonight. He also knew about the secret, and had to hear all about the visit.

G'nite, all! Cherish your friends...they are a gift.

161 jcm  Mon, Dec 22, 2008 10:12:20pm

A brief story of my Monday.

I have the week off, my wife doesn't work on Monday.
With the snow and all we we're looking to having a fun snow day.
Think again.
Little 9 mo foster munckin had a fussy night, and woke up fussy pulling at her ear. We've been working with chronic ear infections and have EENT scheduled for a week and a half.

The doctors office is shutting down, I figured at least one doc would make it in and with all the cancelation we'd get in no problem. Nope, no way. The doc was in but they weren't seeing nobody. A couple rounds of phone call with the consulting nurse, the after hours clinic and doc's office the ER was the only options.

My wife says she's not driving in this stuff in Seattle, and she's not staying home with the other three. So we pack kids, toys and snacks and head to the ER.

Now anyone from MN, ND would be laughing their asses off at Seattle in the snow. So off we go, after I shovel 16" of frozen gorebul warming from my drive. Other than yahoo's in all wheel drive Subaru's and Volvo's who think tailgating is a good idea on packed snow and ice the trip wasn't bad.

4 hours of keeping the kiddo's entertained in the waiting room and feeding them snacks it time to go. Off to flll a new prescription before heading home, stopped for some burgers for dinner, and head home.

Arriving at home and water is running out from under the garage door... frozen pipe! Perfect end to the day! /// Now it's the garage, nothing getting damaged, except my winter preparedness pride. Plus a day without water isn't major, I'm stocked for the big earthquake. Heating water on the stove is annoying at most. So I shut of the house main and check the pipe... mmm. no obvious damage, put it was leaking. Go back and turn on the main, check the pipe... no leak WTF! Water everywhere on the floor, waters on, no leak? ? ?

Wait a minute sez I! The valve to the yard sprinklers is right there, did I turn that off not thinking about it? It's a quarter turn valve. I crack it open... Water sprays every where! The yard sprinklers I shut off and drain the system. Some where along the line the valve got bumped allowing the system to fill partially, with the freezing weather frozen. Big whoop! Shut the valve off, squeegee the water out of the garage, salt the drive way and call it good! Fix the sprinklers in the spring!

So how was everyone else's day?

re: #160 mikeymom

Oh. Well, you did ask.

Please remember that this occurred when I was about 18, all right?

One happy evening, involving, as I recall, daquiris (this is quite, quite separate from stories involving a mad dash to Mexico to buy Khalua, all right?), we got into a discussion of methods of immobilizing people. It was all good fun, and no one ended up naked. However, I demonstrated my favored technique for keeping large males immobile.

I plead drunkenness as my excuse for forgetting to put a doubled ring of tape before actually taping wrists, ankles and other parts. Really.

It required vast amounts of nail polish remover - as I recall, six bottles - to release the males from durance vile.

No, they never forgave me.

But some of it was an awful lot of fun.

We switched to zyrtec, seeing if allergies. If that clears it allergies is likely, if not it's likely the EENT will recommend tubes. Too many ear infection can affect the hearing later in life.

Hey guys -- I've been out of the loop for a few days now.

Coming back, it looks like the situation between Hamas/Israel in the Gaza Strip has reached another crisis-point. With Israel continuously, and quite vacuously threatening a military option, Hamas agreeing to a 24-hour reduction in rocket fire that call a 24-ceasefire with hopes egged on by the Egyptians that this act of mercy will exonerate the leaders of Hamas from Israeli assassinations. According to DEBKA, Hamas has begun using anti-aircraft weapons for the first time in 9 years, which they no doubt did not have prior to the six month ceasefire.

How long will it take before Israel acts? Or will electioneering win out the day, and will the Israeli's look like weak cowards and fools, yet again?

I've got some good ones, even after just one day.

Why?

Back when the Thomas Covenant series came out and was the rage I slogged through it. Seemed like walking in swamp mud- you kept hoping it would get easier but it never did. Gave the books to No. 1 son (I was ticked at him).

Ah. Well then it's no wonder they never forgave you!
(but boy would I LOVE to hear all the details of this, ah, game -even if it involved no nudity!).

The worst of it was that I, in those days, weighed perhaps 110 soaking wet, and appeared to be all figure, no form.

I was, however, sneaky as all get out.

This resulted in six foot guys finding themselves bound hand and foot. To each other and convenient fixtures. With duct tape.

I started with thumbs.

I was not popular for a while there.

Oh, it's not the sex. It's the intellectual brutality. I can actually deal with the impalement in the first thirty pages, graphically described. It's the moment when the nun is being forced to have sex, and a drakka character says, "I'll have ropes and lotions sent to your rooms" that I flip.

Oh cause we were discussing it last night/early this morning and I'd recommended that you "step away" from your work for a while before going back over it, cause I'd found that when working under time pressure, after the 2nd or 3rd drafts, I wasn't really reading what I had written - my brain was basically telling me what I'd already written before. I know you said you're not under time pressure or deadline, but still think it's good advice to leave it alone for a few days anyway, before going back, cause then you wiil be able to edit the material much better.

That's not even half way through Under the Yoke.

I have no idea what happened after that. I thought I was going to throw up several times before that. But think about what that statement implies.

That's a level of accepted, intellectualized, brutality that is simply unacceptable.

Experts: Beware of unofficial Obama coins

The TV ads tout a "genuine" United States Inaugural Presidential Dollar showing President-elect Barack Obama depicted in "glorious full color" for just $9.95, plus shipping and handling.

A coin collecting expert says the gold-dipped, painted coins are nothing more than a trinket, and the U.S. Mint — the only official purveyor of U.S. currency — says buyer beware.

And of course LOST is the King of adventure shows, and for you viewing pleasure, it will be returning for a 5th Season on Wed. Jan 21st, 2009 with 3 hours of LOST, a one hour catch up clip show and then a 2 hour opening episode.

At the end of Season 4, six people left the Island, the others stayed behind and then the Island "moved," "disappeared," separating the two groups.

Now, to save those left on the Island, the Oceanic Six will have to find out what happened to the Island and return.

Ah thank you - I thought that perhaps Hamas had started using 20mm cannons at civilian ground targets.
20 mm cannons are terribly effective when used against ground troops, much less civilians.
And I loved this line from your link: "Egypt has cautioned Hamas that if it wants urgent fuel and food aid for the population to be delivered through the Gaza crossings, it must stop firing for 24 hours."
cause I don't think Israel ought to allow or provide urgent fuel and food aid - if for no other reasons than that Hamas will use such humanitarian relief as a means to smuggle more arms and ammo into Gaza. 'Tis something they've done many times before. And I just think, frankly, that Israel ought to do what's best for Israel, period. These stupid not quite truces are nothing at all. Tell Hamas to quit fighting and firing rockets period and then maybe Israel will consider it, but shit, for a 24 hour
ceasefire? Nope, no where good enough.
