Looking forward to Christmas.
I've come to LOVE this time of year.
A special treat for the Lizards:
WARNING: it's really beautiful. In fact, I actually blubber when I hear it. Yes, I know, that's pathetic. :-)

not sure, but when 2H6 and i were up there for her 80th, the only bar we could find near the church where it was being held was the local gay bar. nice folks to begin with, and when they found out why we were in town and where we were going, we were honored guests.

I put an old cat carrier out for my feral mom and her 3 kittens yesterday-with a pillow and 1 of my old field jacket liners in it. Hopefully they stay dry-I know they'll stay warm; mom moved them right in.....:>)
personally I hate the cold. But how much further South can I go?
If it keeps getting colder, I'm hauling my butt back to Honduras. ;-)>

I was in Okinawa at the airport and some old guy came up and started speaking English. It was obvious he just wanted to practice. I was tired having just pulled a double shift prior to getting woke up and told to go to the airport to pick someone up. I told the guy, "Nicht verstehen, Ich bin Deutches soldaten." The guy then starts speaking fluent German!
We go over and get a beer and it turns out this guy was merchant marine since before WWII and had three ships sunk by the US Navy during the war. He spoke quite a few languages and was a fascinating old git.

in line with the "no habla" routine, i actually pulled that here in Lost Angels earlier this year.
i was going to w*rk at this facility in a business development, complete with and insecurity guard shack at the front......
i pulled up and there were a variety of sillyvillians having a tough time of dealing with the issues in front of them.
being of sound mind, i went in the other gate, leaving them to their issues.
i parked my car, and got out, and was putting on my shirt when the SUV that had had such a *difficult* time negotiating the gate finaly reached where i was.
the worthy gentleman proceeded to berate me as to my driving skills, lack of concern, parentage, etc...... in highly accented, poorly formatted engrish.
when he ran out of breath, i simply looked at him and said "No habla Ingles, Senor." in my best mexican accent..... /deadpan
the look on his face was *priceless*, as was his next line, given most incredulously to the big white guy in the Hawaiian shirt: "You don't speak English?
/more deadpan
'No comprende, senor..... no tienda......."

The balance of power will begin to shift in the national legislature based on demographics soon.

With the change in congressional representation, the electorl college also changes.
So NY, California, Michigan, Ohio and Penn lose electorial college votes... and guess who gets em?
You guessed it: Texas, South Carolina, Florida etc.

As long as there are enough thinking voters-we stand a chance. We've seen every Marxist & Socialist govt go down the tubes/ or going down the tubes. Without Capitalism, Imagination, and Individuality-I see stagnation and ruin for the human race. We have to stay positive and try to encourage these traits! If we can't, then we'll need to stock up on books/armaments/food, so that when the world tanks, we can survive and endure. I know, that's asking a lot......

Its OK... people make mistakes... the fact that I believe that gays can sometimes be obnoxious to the point of offending other people is my opinion.
I believe that if gays were not so offensive they would have more allies, but when they go into churches and disrupt services, use symbols of hate to advance thier cause, and generally walk around and trample on everyone's shoes, then people who would like to assist them or be their natural allies just say to the devil with this.
Which Libertarian do you know does not agree with the arguments that:
1. People should be allowed to live their lives free of government harassment?
2. All citizens under the constitution are guaranteed equal protection under the law?
Most Libertarians find common ground with the arguments gays make, but people get annoyed with the blatant display of explicit sexuality in public places, the use of Nazi symbols and the "in your face" attitude that some radical gays use to advance their arguments.
I don't have a problem with gays until individual gays create a problem for me.

Um, what Nazi symbols are you blathering about? If you're referring to the pink triangles, and are seriously suggesting that the use of them as a "gay pride" emblem is a significant source of annoyance to non-gays, you've gotta be out of your gourd -- because:
(A) Most people probably aren't even aware that the pink triangle was originally devised by the Nazis for gay political prisoners; and
(B) Pink triangles have become NEARLY as passé as the λ these days -- having been almost entirely superseded by rainbows rainbows rainbows and more fucking rainbows. (Which, admittedly, is a reason in and of itself to disdain "gay culture." If I were a leprechaun, or a unicorn, I'd be furious.)

Mr. Libby didn't leak Ms. Plame's name to journalist Robert Novak; Mr. Armitage did that deed, though neither he nor his close friend, Mr. Powell, bothered to tell Mr. Bush or the world.

Many of the Salem witches were young and lookers-which is why the older prunes had them condemned
If this was a joke, it's not really very funny, and if it was intended as a factual assertion, it is the exact opposite of the truth. Of the 20 people put to death during the Salem witch trials, nearly all were over 40, several were in their late 60s, and Giles Corey (one of the six men killed) was 81 when they piled stones on his chest in an attempt to force a confession.
On the other hand, the accusers (i.e., the "witchcraft victims") were all young girls, ranging in age from 9 years old to about 20. There is speculation, however, that at least some of the girls were encouraged to make the accusations by their parents, who in some cases had pre-existing feuds with the accused witches.

It has been a LONG time since I read the stats on Salem-so I stand corrected. But no portrait I ever viewed of a Witch showed them as fat-most were fit-and I refer to all witchcraft trials/Wicaans. The accusers (many of the the young'uns you mentioned) were 'SAVED' from being accused witches, IIRC-by condemning others to save themselves. Maybe that is where you and I disagree, Throbert.

LOWER than that,
the High holidays Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, being the main holidays, then the second tier is Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, the minor holidays are Purim, Hanukkah, and Tu-beshavat. Purim because we read one of the books of the bible is shul based holiday Hanukkah is more in the home.
Only because Hanukkah is next to Christmas has it become more important. and the funny thing is if they knew what the holiday was all about if would be funny. the subject of the holiday is were traditional Jews defeat assimilated Jews.

I took advantage of the MSM Recession blues ("We're Dooooooooooomed!") and purchased a treadmill last week! I went a bit overboard and got one with the Pulse Oximeter and all the electronics built in, and ever since then my wallet has asked me "Why the heck did you do that?"
I let my wallet get the newspaper and see what 25 degrees F with a stiff breeze feels like. Haven't heard any more complaining!
Good morning, everyone!

The Salem witch thing is a timely cautionary tale regarding religion and governance - man, are there some scary scenarios there. Some being played out since the 7th century.
I'm not familiar enough with Salem history, so forgive me if this is a bit too simplistic, but what I know strikes me as Cover Your Ass/Save Your Ass tactics: "We've got you red handed and you're going to pay a heavy price for this indiscretion.... unless you're willing to tell us something?"
Am I in the right neighborhood?

Good morning.
The market futures for the Dow and the S&P 500 are up very slightly, the NASDAQ future number is slightly down, the Nikkei is up 1.57% and the Hang Seng is down 2.75%
It will be a very light trading day. We may see a bit of a surge in the market today as short sellers buy back stock to close their positions and eliminate their risk for the Holiday so they can relax.

Throbert McGee Tue, Dec 23, 2008 4:16:15am |
By the way, one interesting thing I found while double-checking the ages of the accused in the wikipedia article about the Salem witch trials:
In 1695, three years after the trials and executions, Thomas Maule, a noted Quaker, publicly criticized the handling of the trials by the Puritan leaders in Chapter 29 of his book Truth Held Forth and Maintained. Maule expanded on Increase Mather by stating, "it were better than one hundred Witches should live, than that one person be put to death for a witch, which is not a Witch". For publishing this book, Maule was imprisoned twelve months before he was tried and found not guilty.
Increase Mather, despite being a somewhat fanatical Puritan, had urged the trial judges and jurors to treat the claims of the accusers with at least a grain of skepticism, and also said that "it's better for ten witches to live" than for one innocent person to be wrongly executed for witchcraft. This would later be generalized to the legal principle known as Blackstone's formulation.
But what I really found interesting was that Maule was imprisoned merely for having criticized the gummint's handling of the case.

When the wheelbarrow's full, he empties it down a chute. But every now and again the Devil takes a victim and tosses him/her off to the side.

Bravo-you're beginning to see the theme. If you go back into the middle ages witch hunts-the first developed the needles that didn't prick-if you pushed the button, it slid ino the handle. That was used to steal money/property/virginity, but then the witch hunters often turned on their victims and condemned them anyway-after all: loose lips, sink ships......

Unions sue Schwarzenegger over mandatory days off
Reporting from Sacramento -- Two public employee unions on Monday sued Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to block his effort to furlough state workers in a cost-cutting measure as California's treasury runs out of money.
Last week, Schwarzenegger issued an executive order to require that all state employees take two unpaid days off each month starting in February. The governor said the measure is needed to conserve cash, with the state budget gap estimated to reach $42 billion a year and a half from now.
The lawsuit, filed in Sacramento County Superior Court, asserts that only the Legislature can alter the pay of workers who have labor contracts with the state. It asks the courts to issue a temporary stay to stop Schwarzenegger's efforts, which could affect 230,000 workers.
"We don't think he has the authority," said Bruce Blanning, executive director of Professional Engineers in California Government.
California is so screwed.
You watch, we will bail out California too.
People don't change until it hurts too much not to. What you see happening now is a whole bunch of people scrambling to avoid the pain of change and try to shift it too someone else.

Hunted by the US and NATO forces for committing acts of terror in Afghanistan, the Taliban said they would back the Pakistan Army by deploying hundreds of suicide bombers in case of any military action with India.
[...]
"The time had come, to wage a real jihad that the Taliban had been waiting for," Mehsud, for whom the Pakistani and US forces are on the look out claimed."We know very well that the visible and invisible enemies of the country have been planning to weaken this lone Islamic nuclear power. The case of Ann Putnam, one of the "bewitched" girls at Salem, is especially interesting -- she was 13 at the time of the trials, and made accusations against 62 different people. But about 15 years after the trials, she publicly recanted her accusations, saying that she had been tricked by Satan into slandering innocent people as witches.
However... Ann's dad, Thomas Putnam, was one of the wealthiest and possibly THE most influential man in Salem, and it also happens that he was a driving force behind the trials -- he personally obtained many of the testimonies from the "victims" and procured a lot of the subsequent arrest warrants. So it's likely that the "Satan" who had persuaded Ann to make false accusations of witchcraft was her own father. Exactly what Thomas Putnam's motivations may have been, on the other hand, is less clear -- did he have personal grudges against some of the accused witches? Did he hope to acquire the land owned by some of the accused? Or was he just a batshit-crazy religious paranoic who really and truly believed that witches were out to get him?

I think it's going to go down this time: Nuclear combat toe-to-toe with the Hajis. India will win, of course, but the carnage and destruction will be past imagining. My guess: 12-14 million killed outright, with variable numbers of long term casualties from fallout and radiation exposure.
Anyone outside the Islamic world who had any part in helping Pak get the bomb (and any within it that we can catch) should end up swinging from a lamppost.

The Pakistan Air Force is close to saying just that:
War possibility has Pak air force worried
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has warned the nation’s civilian leadership that in case of an armed conflict with India, PAF could lose its skies within a week.
In a secret report, the air force has told president Asif Ali Zardari, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, that PAF’s entire war strategy rests on a strike at the heart of India’s western air command - as was the case in 1965. Which means, disabling a great number of Indian aircraft before they take off to establish supremacy in the air.
The report points out the bitter fact that PAF only has about three dozen truly world-class fighter planes — F-16 Fighting Falcons — and of them, only a handful are the latest block-52 fighters. The remaining are ageing aircraft acquired 20-25 years ago. These are not even a match for Su-30s and are outnumbered by MiG-29s.
After F-16s, the PAF report points out, Pakistan has Mirage-IIIs and Mirage-Vs. The fact, however, remains the earliest of these were received over 37 years ago. Pakistan also relies heavily on F-7Ps, the Chinese version of the Soviet MiG-21s, which currently is India’s most dispensable plane.
JF-17s, rumoured to have a production cost of $17 million per unit, are still years from becoming PAF’s mainstay. There are other planes, including a solitary surviving squadron of MiG-19, or F-6, as it is called, its A-5 variant ground attack aircraft, FT-5 (a variant of MiG-17), the jet trainer K-8 and the Super Mushak, but these would be of little consequence in a full-blown conflict.
Pitting against these planes is a wide range of aircraft, including but not limited to, Su-30s, Mirage-2000s, MiG-29s, MiG-27s, MiG-23s and MiG-21s, which make the Indian Air Force a formidable nemesis.

Steal My Sunshine Lyrics
i was lying on the grass on sunday morning of last week
indulging in my self defeats
my mind was thugged, all laced and bugged, all twisted round and beat
uncomfortable three feet deep
now the fuzzy stare from not being there on a confusing morning week
impaired my tribal lunar-speak
and of course you can't become if you only say what you would have done
so i missed a million miles of funi know it's up for me
if you steal my sunshine
making sure i'm not in too deep
if you steal my sunshine
keeping versed and on my feet
if you steal my sunshinei was frying on the bench slide in the park across the street
l-a-t-e-r that week
my sticky paws were into making straws out of big fat slurpy treats
an incredible eight foot heap
now the funny glare to pay a gleaming tear in a staring under heat
involved an under usual feat
and i'm not only among but i invite who i want to come
so i missed a million miles of funi know it's up for me
if you steal my sunshine
making sure i'm not in too deep
if you steal my sunshine
keeping versed and on my feet
if you steal my sunshinei know it's done for me
if you steal my sunshine

if you steal my sunshine
keeping dumb and built to beat
if you steal my sunshinemy sunshine

I think he'll try to nationalize healthcare. Success chances I put at about 20%.
Now, my statistics are based upon a pure un-scientific guess, but I put it at about 20%.

re: #418 3 wood
I think it's a give that he will nationalize health care. He will call that an economic stimulus move.
And He's going to spend $1 trillion on public works stuff.
The unions will get their piece.
I was talking about this "public works" program with my brother yesterday ...we were wondering if this is going to be like the programs FDR set up and if it involves physical work ...how many people are really use to doing physical labor ...I mean will they have to turn off their cells phones? ...I say this because I know from experience ...it is difficult to get people to work in jobs that require physical labor ...
At the time of FDR people were much more use to working on farms and actually doing physical labor ...how many times do you go past a highway construction site and see 3 people standing around watching one person digging a hole or something like that ...I hope it works out but it will sure require many people to change their idea of work ...

Thought I might cheer everyone up this morning.

gag.
Hillary Clinton attempting to turn her State Department job into a Treasury Department job.
Looks like the uber-socialist won't be satisfied until she can "take things away for the common good"from her seat at the State Dept.
Thanks, Barack.
