Not looking forward to the trip home. I work near a major mall and another small one, and the roads around here back up really bad right now.

OK. That's worse than what we had; an ice storm followed by either two 10-12" snowstorms or one 20-24" one. At least I got it cleared, despite a broken shear pin on the snowblower.
Now, all the trees that came down in the ice storm are buried in snow, and the small dogs can't find enough space to go.

South of Seattle, south of Tacoma, Lakewood WA, at the top of a suburban hilly area with only two steep roads out to a more trafficked area. The snow on the cul-de-sac is still 4+ inches thick. Even chains and/or studded tires are an iffy bet.

Bush pardons man who helped Israel during wartime
WASHINGTON – In a gesture of forgiveness for an American considered a hero in Israel, President George W. Bush on Tuesday granted a pardon posthumously to a man who broke the law to supply aircraft to Jews fighting in Israel's 1948 war of independence.
Charles Winters was listed in a batch of 19 pardons and one commutation that Bush issued before leaving for Camp David to spend the holidays. No high-profile lawbreakers were on the list.
In the summer of 1948, Winters, a non-Jewish Miami businessman who exported produce, worked with others to transfer two converted B-17 "Flying Fortresses" to Israel's defense forces. He personally flew one of the aircraft from Miami to Czechoslovakia, where that plane and a third B-17 were retrofitted for use as bombers.

It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Ev'rywhere you go
Take a look in the federal pen,
Glistening once again
With police canes and silver lanes aglow
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Writs in ev'ry box
But the prettiest sight to see
is the warrant that will be
On Blago's own front door
A gubanatorial seat and a choice of Sens
Is the wish of Lisa and Quinn
Dolls that won't talk and will go for a walk
Is the hope of Daley and Jan
And Jack and Mike can hardly wait for sessions to start again
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Ev'rywhere you go
There's a wire in the Lincoln Hotel,
One in the office as well
The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the bull
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring
Is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart

My problem is, he does not rate a salute & will not until he is sworn in.
A salute is a courteous greeting, the equivalent of tipping your hat. The rule is that you return a salute at any time to avoid embarrassment even if the strict regulations would not have you salute. For example, the Navy only salutes in uniform and never salutes uncovered but the Army does salute when a junior meets a senior regardless of uniform or cover so the rule is that when you meet an Army officer who would expect a salute you salute and smile. Also Obama while not in any official capacity at the moment is a former Senator. You salute the office, not the man.

Obama worked out at the Marine gym on Oahu Sunday.
When he left he spotted two Marines standing near by & snaped them a salute. They of course felt compelled to salute him.
My problem is, he does not rate a salute & will not until he is sworn in.
and it is not up to him to initiate the salute as Commander in Chief at that time even. The subordinate initiates the salute-the senior returns it. He needs a little more study time.
On the other hand, it took Clinton awhile before he would even do that much. He pretty much treated the support solders with disdain... his wife was worse.

Justice, UK socialist style:
[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]
"Four in 10 crimes go uninvestigated
Almost four in 10 crimes are not being investigated because police officers believe they cannot be solved.
The offences include sex attacks, violent robberies, harassment, burglary and drug incidents.
The Metropolitan Police, the country's largest police force, decided that more than half of crimes did not warrant full investigation as there was little chance of the culprit being caught, according to The Daily Mail.
The Met said that in the 2007/8 financial year it "screened out" a total of 437,888 offences. These included 26,709 violent offences, 338 sex attacks, 5,562 robberies and more than 60,000 burglaries.
For burglary, the Met only investigates one in three cases reported to them. In Bedfordshire, which last year screened out 42 per cent of crimes, one in three burglaries do not get a full investigation, while in Norfolk, 113 sex attacks were among the 42 per cent of crime screened out.
Although the percentage of screened out crime falls for more serious offences the force still excluded 290 offences of violence, 12 sex attacks, 32 robberies and 16 drugs offences.
It was found that across the country, of the 16 forces who replied to a Freedom of Information request, 39 per cent of crimes were screened out - an equivalent of 1.9 million out of the five million crimes reported.
A spokesman for Victim Support said: "Even if this process is justified by lack of evidence, the figures are likely to undermine confidence in the police among victims.
"If victims feel that their experience of crime is being dismissed by the very agencies that are meant to deal with the situation, that risks adding insult to injury."
The Tories have blamed the Government's "target culture", arguing that police forces now target resources almost exclusively on cases with the best chance of success.
Many of the most common offences are routinely filed "not for action" by telephone operators at the first possible stage, after the first initial call reporting the crime.
On average, only 27 per cent of crimes are solved.
By recording it as a crime, the officer is acknowledging the law has been broken.
The main reasons the investigation is dropped are if there are no obvious leads, such as the name of the suspected offender.
Shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve told The Daily Mail: "This is a consequence of Labour's target culture which has resulted in our police being forced to chase Whitehall diktats instead of criminals.
"Conservatives would replace police authorities with elected police commissioners so that the priorities of the police reflect the priorities of the people they serve.'
Serious crimes such as murder or rape are always investigated, as are crimes where there is a named suspect or obvious forensic evidence.
A Home Office spokesman said the Government had reduced centrally-set targets and planned to cut red tape to free up officers.
Norfolk police's deputy chief constable Ian Learmonth said: "We are making best use of our resources by investigating only those crimes which have some hope or opportunity of being solved."
A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said: "Before any crime is 'screened out' it will have been through a rigorous evaluation procedure."
The disclosure comes a month after Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, said she supports a policy that every crime victim should be seen by a police officer no matter how minor the offence.
She spoke after two chief constables, Roger Baker of Essex and Matt Baggott of Leicestershire, said that an officer should be sent to every crime.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Ms Smith admitted there is a gap between the results police are delivering and the impact the public believe it is having.

"Miss Smith said "They want visible policing, they want people, if they have been involved in crime that they want the police to actually come and talk to them about it, to take action, to tell them what action they have taken, to communicate that not just to them as an individual but to the community as a whole."
Since she made the comments, five more police forces have pledged to visit every victim of crime. Officers from Merseyside, Thames Valley, North Wales, Staffordshire and Dyfed-Powys have all told The Daily Telegraph they will visit every victim who requests it."
As can be seen, crime is steadily falling in the UK.

What a hell of a great Christmas present! Airborne! ;-)>
For all you Trooper who haven't seen this, enjoy (not sure who wrote it, but it's good)
‘Twas the jump before Christmas and all through the plane, the Jumpmaster is crazy, the Safety’s insane.
The static lines hung on the cables with care, in hopes that a green light soon would be appear.
At the one minute warning not a word would be said, while malfunctions and entanglements danced through their heads.
With the door bundles rigged, I hooked up my pack, Let’s pull this jump off without a racetrack!
When out on the wing there rose such a clatter, I opened the door to see what was the matter.
And what to my night-visioned eyes did appear, but a single towed jumper all bundled in fear.
I leaned out the door and grabbed hold of my knife, I slashed through his static line saving his life.
He fell through the night ‘Till I saw him no more, I came back inside and yelled, “Stand in the door.”
Some jumpers were happy and some full of fright, but the green light came on and they all jumped that night.
The bundle, the jumpers, all exited the door, one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, four!
As I jumped in the blast with my knees in the breeze, I prayed to St. Michael as I slipped from the trees!
Dark skies full of chutes and strong winds did they blow, I heard a faint Laughter, From the DZSO.
I lowered my ruck and prepared to land, the slip that I have is now hand over hand.
I land with a crash the PLF is now moot, take a leak, find my gear, then roll up my chute
I looked for the stiner, it’s a mile away. I put on my kit and start heading that way.
The assembly point strobe light so bright, I knew all the troopers, would find it that night.
No matter where or when, be it Desert or Snow, The Airborne Trooper is ready to go.
Then I noticed the trooper holding that light, he had just been towed and wishing me a good night.
Have a Merry Airborne Christmas

Read what I said, you do not decline to return a salute because "he does not rate" just as you do not decline to return a salute because you are uncovered. The best example being "rewards" credit cards. Buy your groceries every week with the card instead of cash, but pay it off with cash, and voila, you earn some points for cash, travel, etc.
Online, there are places like MyPoints where you sign up an account, and if you are going to buy something online anyway, if you buy through a link from the mypoints site, you earn points that are redeemable for prizes.

Ew, that reminds me -- when I was in sixth grade (on Kadena AFB in Okinawa), we had a class field trip off-base to a local sugarcane-processing factory. I was surprised by how incredibly vile it smelled!

re: #175 Silhouette
There are still things like green stamps.
I've earned a few $10 gift certificates to Red Lobster this past year.
Young-un: there is nothing like Green Stamps.
You got the book, which had the selection of items, with pictures, and how many Green Stamps were needed to get it.
Then, every time you went to a participating store, you got Green Stamps. Loose amounts. One, ten, whatever.
Then you came home, and used a sponge (if you were smart) to wet the back of the things, and paste them into the Green Stamp book.
When you had the requisite number of books, you went to the Green Stamp place, turned in the books, and they had your selection shipped to that Green Stamp place. The person at the Green Stamp place would, in fact, examine each sheet of each book to make sure there were enough Green Stamps pasted on.
A week to ten days later, you went back to get your selection.
The "rewards" system pales in comparison.

WASHINGTON: Even before taking office, Hillary Rodham Clinton is seeking to build a more powerful State Department, with a bigger budget, high-profile special envoys to trouble spots and an expanded role in dealing with global economic issues at a time of crisis.Clinton is recruiting Jacob Lew, the budget director under President Bill Clinton, as one of two deputies, according to people close to the Obama transition team. Lew’s focus, they said, would be on increasing the share of financing that goes to the diplomatic corps. LINK
I think this is hilarious. Bigger budget? More power? Nah, not Hillary! Ha! While dopey Joe Biden looks to DECREASE his power as Vice President, along comes Hillary looking to INCREASE her power as Secretary of State!
Here’s a bit of advice for dopey Joe: If you wnat to be taken the least bit seriousl over the next four years here’s what you your going to have to do:
At the very first Presidential Cabinet Meeting, as soon a Hillary opens her yap and starts cackleing, lean over, grab her by the scruff of the neck and SMASH HER FACE on the table. Then stand up, look every other sissy in the room directly in the face and ask if anyone else has anything to say. Make sure the Marine General is in the head at the time.
Excellent! Favorited. Thanks.

Some troops think it is fun to torture Junior Officers by making them return salutes or almost saluting and then turning away when they see a new JO. When a Chief or a Gunny sees that training happens quick.
We used to space out when we saw an officer. It was one salute for us, but we could keep him busy for a good 3-4 minutes.
Hated Naval bases. Kept thinking "OH! Shiny collar, better salute. FUCK! Another Chief!"

Interesting. I didn't know that the Illinois pols did that.
They suggested it. This includes former Speaker Dennis Hastert, as well as Senator Dick Durbin. It's a grouping of Republicans and Democrats that John Kass has christened The Combine. The Illinois Republicans involved were already pissed that Fitz put former Governor George Ryan behind bars, and the Democrats were pissed that Fitz was on the tail of the Machine. The Dems also did not like seeing Ryan in jail. Something about scratching backs.

If you look up the relevant section of the US Code, you'll note that it doesn't mention whether or not the foreign power involved is an ally, or what effect the act may or may not have had on US national security.

My point is that no matter who likes it, BHO is going to be Commander in Chief. Rudeness to him will not result in a promotion.
Promotions will be reserved for the friends of Weasely Clark. If I was the skipper and I heard a gripe for that I hope I would stand by my troops insofar as the were polite and have civil rights, I would not buy them a beer individually, I would see to it the Command Top Kick took care of them and let them know they were OK.

Israel was legally entitled to this vital security information according to a 1983 Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.
But Pollard's job description didn't include making decisions about releasing classified information to foreign governments, so the rest of the quote from his website is irrelevant (not to mention self-serving).

More on what Carter wrote:
"In the afternoon Bob, Hrair, and I met with Khaled Mashaal and his fellow Hamas politburo members, all of whom are scientists, medical doctors, or engineers – none trained in religion. It was the anniversary of Hamas' founding, and they were watching Prime Minister Haniya's speech in Gaza to an enormous crowd. We discussed items on my agenda that included an extension of the ceasefire in Gaza, life there under the Israeli sanctions, the Arab peace initiative, reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah, the future of Palestinian leadership and elections in the West Bank and Gaza, and formulas for prisoner exchange to obtain the release of Corporal Shalit. Like the Syrians, they are patient, relatively satisfied with the status quo, and putting all their eggs in Obama's basket. We had to caution them about expecting too much of an immediate change in U.S. Middle East policy."
The only thing not on Carter's agenda were the rockets being lobbed into Israel by Hamas.
I hate Jimmy Carter.

The penalty should depend on what they transmitted, and what damage they did. As I said, Pollard deserves some punishment; since he accepted the plea deal, that is probably a fair sentence.
Getting the SAME sentence as someone who passed info to the Soviets and compromised our agents and our communications, is like giving the same sentence to someone who stole $100,000 as given to someone who stole $100,000,000.

Heh, never underestimate us little ole gray haired's...
In all seriousness we have several "little ole gray haired ladies" that have befriended our family. They are a formidable group.
The kids are sad about our adopted "Bubbie" who recently moved to California. It was a good move for her and got her settled in much better circumstances, but we miss her very much. My 9 yo boy was crying at Thanksgiving because she was not at our table for the first time since he was born.
We sent a big box of homemade candies to her new address and that seemed to make his day. I hope it makes hers.
We all have homemade menorahs she helped us make and fire in her kiln. It was quite the sight every year - a big family of Mormons lighting the candles and remembring the miracle in Maccabees, making potato latkes and knoshing on homemade Hamentoshen. (Bubbie joined the LDS Church prior to us meeting her. Her lessons in her heritage opened my eyes to how much Christianity owes its current form to much more ancient roots.)

To be sure, the espionage statute contemplates no legal distinction between spying for an enemy, which clearly would satisfy the "to the injury of the United States" prong of the law, and spying for an ally; both are theoretically subject to the same penalties. But legal equivalence is not moral equivalence.
You know, when your own lawyer admits that you broke the law, and attempts to argue moral equivalence, you're pretty much screwed.

Arabs lavish jewels on Secretary of State Rice
WASHINGTON – President George W. Bush's foreign policies may be unpopular in the Middle East, but Arab leaders showered his top diplomat with jewelry worth far more than a quarter of a million dollars last year.
While Bush himself didn't fare nearly as well, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice raked in at least $316,000 in gem-encrusted baubles from the kings of Jordan and Saudi Arabia alone, making her one of top recipients among U.S. officials of gifts from foreign heads of state and government and their aides in 2007.
In January, Jordan's King Abdullah II gave Rice an emerald and diamond necklace, ring, bracelet and earrings estimated to be worth $147,000, according to the State Department's annual inventory of such items released Monday just in time for Christmas.
The king and his wife, Queen Rania, also gave Rice a less expensive necklace and earrings along with a jewelry box valued at $4,630, the document shows...

Do you know that Lovelace had admitted that her past career was wrong and she wishes she had never worked in the porn industry.
So, I think you should apologize for making a joke about her. She has given up that life.
Excuse my skepticism, but that is known as the "Linda syndrome" , porn stars that repudiate their career once they are to old to work in it. She is not the only one to do so.

No, but if you're familiar with military customs and courtesies, you know that the junior salutes the senior, who then returns the salute. So he properly saluted the Marines, who returned it as courtesy requires. ::big grin::

The king and his wife, Queen Rania, also gave Rice a less expensive necklace and earrings along with a jewelry box valued at $4,630, the document shows...[Link: news.yahoo.com...]
Between Jimmy Carter sucking off Khaled Mashaal, Bill Clinton accepting bribes from Saudi Arabia, and Condi Rice whoring herself, is there anyone who actually takes American National Interest seriously when it comes to defending us against Arab radicalism?
And your point is? None of these gift were kept by the recipients, and there is a BIG difference between someone paying a person for speaking engagement after speaking engagement, after you have served your term (ala Clinton) versus state to state gifts which is a tradition as old as this country.
I don't see the point you are trying to make.

Which is a convenient fallback for a judge in such a case. A judge will look at the evidence. Evaluate that the guy is guilty as hell. And deny the request on a technicality.

These "gifts" are made with the expectation that something will be returned in exchange.

Please let me clarify. I was saying that posting nude images is more offensive or shocking to some people than crude humor because images are potential triggers to those who are addicted. What goes into producing those images is also harmful to real flesh and blood human beings. That is where I sympathized with Yochanon's position.

Yes, and Rear Admiral Zumwalt had him shipped back to the US after a mere six months because according to R.A. Zumwalt, Lt. John Kerry was a greater danger to his own men then the Vietcong were.
Please link to that statement from the Admiral, not from his son nor the swift boat guys speculation. Zumwalt defended Kerry in 1996 and there is this.
"Vice Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Commander Naval Forces Vietnam, personally selected the Silver Star award for Kerry and personally pinned the Silver Star on Kerry's chest at a ceremony at our Coastal Division 11 base in An Thoi, South Vietnam just days after the action. A decoration, like every other award for heroism, that was recommended by his Division Officer and endorsed by then Captain Roy L. Hoffmann. According to Zumwalt, he actually wanted to give Kerry an even higher award, the Navy Cross, but decided upon a Silver Star because he wished to make the award as expeditiously as possible. These points were publicly reiterated by Admiral Zumwalt in 1996, in defense of Kerry's military record."

Yes. CNN has repeatedly used the "D" word -- especially with regard to a report on the declining value of homes ("blah, blah blah percentage of Americans now hold mortgages in excess of the value of their homes, something not seen since the "D", etc." not a direct quote there, but that's what's being reported.)

an interesting facet of this Pollard argument is he was spying for a friendly country so it is less damaging? That may go for moral arguments but holds no water legally.
If I go an commit an armed bank robbery and donate all $25,000 to a local children's charity, I am still guilty of armed robbery and numerous other charges. The judge may or may not consider the final recipient (the charity) as a mitigating factor but is not legally obligated to do so.

How many open threads can fit on the head of a pin... Hmmm... About 5x10^12 hydrogen atoms fit on the head of an average size pin, so if we are using an open thread (string) theory, then we might be able to deduce this:
The average size of a string should be somewhere near the length scale of quantum gravity (if string theory is to be a theory of quantum gravity).
So, that puts us at the Planck length of about 1X10^-33 centimeters.
Which would also put the length of a thread (string) at one Planck length; 1x10^-33 cm. Unfortunately, I am unable to calculate the width of a thread. However, if we consider the possibility that a thread vibrates, rotates, tumbles, and spins in all directions along a central point of axis, then we can assume it occupies a spherical shape; so, the width of the thread is unimportant in our calculation.
Now, the diameter of a hydrogen atom is about 1x10^-8 centimeters. So, how many strings would fit in a hydrogen atom? We can get a rough idea by using a little math:
# of threads in the diameter of a Hydrogen Atom = (1x10^-8) / (1x10^-33) = 1x10^25
So, now we need to calculate the thread volume of the Hydrogen Atom:
Thread Volume of H atom = (pi x d^3)/6 = (3.14159265 x (1x10^25)^3)/6 = (3.14159265 x 1x10^78)/6 = 3.14159265x10^78/6 =
5.23598775x10^77
That is to say, there are 5.23598775x10^77 threads in an atom (that is, of course, assuming that the threads are spinning in a spherical fashion and will occupy space in the fashion of bubbles clumped together).
So, now we just need to find out how many threads on the head of a pin.
To do that, we just multiply the number of threads in a single Hydrogen atom by the number of Hydrogen atoms that fit on the head of a pin.
Remember, 5x10^12 Hydrogen atoms fit on the head of a pin.
Number of threads that fit on the head of a pin = 5x10^12 X 5.23598775x10^77 = 2.617993875x10^90
So, if I did my math right (I'm using a cheap little calculator that doesn't have an exponent function - I'm doing the exponents in my head), the answer is:
2.617993875x10^90 Open Threads on the head of a pin!
Cheers

Every service's ratings and ranking are confusing to the others. I just adopted the policy of when in doubt salute it. Only got told a couple of times I was wrong and was then laughed at. ;)
(sigh) been there. The Navy (senior?) NCOs used to have some kind of khaki suit that looked like a business suit almost with no visible rank. I saluted a couple of them puppies a time or two. arggh.

They're actually toying with the idea of adding another enlisted pay grade, although I'm not sure what they'd call the rank that went with it.
The Army's been having trouble retaining E-9s, because once you make CSM, that's pretty much it. Some people manage to do that in as little as 18 years or so, so why would they want to stick around knowing that they'll never be promoted again (aside from the pay raises, of course).
The idea I saw was for battalion and brigade CSMs to be E-9s, and for division and above to be E-10s. Don't know if it will ever happen.

for status? If I was a CSM, I would not be satisfied with a mere Battalion CSM position. I would want to go as far as I could. I think many feel the same way.

Nah, nah, nah, the Navy doesn't have Senior NCOs, only Chiefs (Chief Petty Officers, actually E7-E9). The only true NCOs are Petty Officers (E4-E6), and they look like junior squids, same dungaree uniforms.

re: #489 avanti
The quote does not come from his son nor the swift boat guys speculation, it comes from W. Scott Thompson, an adjunct professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston.
For example, the fabled and distinguished chief of naval operations (CNO), Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, told me -- 30 years ago when he was still CNO -- that during his own command of US naval forces in Vietnam, just prior to his anointment as CNO, young Kerry had created great problems for him and the other top brass, by killing so many non-combatant civilians and going after other non-military targets.
"We had virtually to straight-jacket him to keep him under control," the admiral said. "Bud" Zumwalt got it right when he assessed Kerry as having large ambitions -- but promised that his career in Vietnam would haunt him if he were ever on the national stage.
In legal terms this is a first hand account of a personal conversation, it is not hearsay, but genuine evidence acceptable in a court of law.

I know the feeling, which is why I retired. The last two years I spent over 500 days deployed on various exercises, deployments, and TDYs. None of them lasting longer than two months. Then home for a week ora couple of days before out again. Most of my career was like that.
You hit a stage where you know you have done al you can do. Any longer and you would be a detriment.

I like Lieutenants. Every Lieutenant I trained, with the exception of one, went on to achieve at least Full Colonel before retirement and a couple of them got stars.
The one got nada and left the Army when he was passed over one too many times.
So many good jobs and opportunities in the country and he just picked the wrong one. In my defense, I think he would fail at any occupation he tried unless he got his head out of his fourth point of contact.

OK, not from the Admiral directly then. I certainly won't debate the swifties on a right wing blog. I actually admire the political savy that allowed a attack on a vet's patriotism to win a election, especially with Bush's avoiding the unpleasantness. I recall walking down a sidewalk at Fort Sam Houston in 1957 with a couple of other guys and our barracks sergeant when we met a newly-minted lieutenant who failed to return our salutes. The sergeant spun on his heel, said, "Excuse me, sir," and delivered the most respectful and effective ass-chewing I ever heard. I bet that lieutenant never again failed to return a salute.
