When Pastor Rick Warren’s “Global Peace Coalition” presented President Bush with the International Medal of Peace recently, one of the groups invited to attend the ceremony was the Islamic Society of North America—one of the unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation Hamas funding trial: ISNA ATTENDS SADDLEBACK CHURCH CIVIL FORUM ON GLOBAL HEALTH.

This event took place after the convictions of the Holy Land Foundation defendants.

Of course the comeback will be that there were a lot of religious groups there. ISNA is however a political as well as religious group.

I doubt it. No one cares; Warren is associated with Obama and is thus an ambassador of peace, regardless of who he cavorts with.

Bedfellows. An odd word.

Standard political coinage, I use it a lot - no sexual innuendo intended.

e.g. When Pat Buchanan and Jeremy Rifkin both agree on crossfire they are strange bedfellows.

More on Bedfellows:

Party politics, like poverty, bring men ‘acquainted with strange bedfellows’.
[1839 P. Hone Diary 9 July (1927) I. 404]
The Doolittle raspberries have sprawled all over the strawberry-beds: so true is it that politics makes strange bed-fellows.
[1870 C. D. Warner My Summer in Garden (1871) 187]
Ashley Wilkes and I are mainly responsible. Platitudinously but truly, politics make strange bedfellows.
[1936 M. Mitchell Gone with Wind lviii.]
Even enemies have something in common. Statecraft produces strange bedfellows.
[1980 P. Van greenaway Dissident vii.]
Politics makes strange bedfellows, if Mr. Hyde will forgive the unforgivable but irresistible metaphor.

Rick Warren is not to be trusted. He is interested in building up Rick Warren. Humility is not his bag. There are some people one should associate with, but the publicity is so worth it. Gag.

I have to say I did like what Barney Frank (the jerk) said the other day about not being in the business of having conversations all over the place, but being in the business of actually doing something. Not that he would know.

I feel neither one way or the other about Warren. I think Obama's choice of him was NOTHING but calculation. They do not share a denomination, and it looks like he's trying to play the part of what he believes "the center" is. That lack of strength in one's own beliefs is a little disconcerting.

I could go through the St. Louis Yellow Pages and find 10 more appropriate ministers for Obama.

Don't think so. Graham stopped in Teheran in 70-72' (IIRC) while we lived there, one of his revivals was out of the question and he did meet with the Shah to lay the ground work for one. Graham also met with the local pastors and missionaries privately at his hotel. My dad was invited and I got to tag along, to be seen and not heard.

Graham was ever unique and genuine, it was never about Billy Graham, it was alway about the message.

Very fine post jcm - too many people compare Billy Graham and Rick Warren simply because they are both "named" preachers, but Rick Warren does seem to be all about Rick Warren and of course, Billy Graham was always about the message.

106 Ward Cleaver  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 9:55:25pm

re: #72 jcm

Don't think so. Graham stopped in Teheran in 70-72' (IIRC) while we lived there, one of his revivals was out of the question and he did meet with the Shah to lay the ground work for one. Graham also met with the local pastors and missionaries privately at his hotel. My dad was invited and I got to tag along, to be seen and not heard.

Graham was ever unique and genuine, it was never about Billy Graham, it was alway about the message.

Well, that's what I meant. Billy Graham has always been the real deal, and Warren is just a wannabe. I've always had a great deal of respect for Billy Graham.

Interesting thing about the Puritans- read some time ago that someone studied marriage, birth and death records (infant and childbirth mortality) in the early colonies. Found that essentially half (IIRC 49.5%, but it's a while ago) of brides were pregnant at their weddings.
Some of the old timers were pretty pragmatic about the ability to produce heirs (usually multiple- life was deadly, and children were expected to provide for their elders when they became unable to work). A woman who couldn't at least conceive was unlikely to attract a choice mate.

William Penn, the founder and mayor of Philadelphia, had two aunts - Hattie and Sophia - who were skilled in the baking arts. One day, "Big Bill" was petitioned by the citizens of his town because the three bakeries in the town had, during the Revolution, raised the price of pies to the point that only the rich could afford them.

Not wanting to challenge the bakeries directly, he turned to his aunts and asked their advice. But when they had heard the story, the two old ladies were so incensed over the situation that they offered to bake 100 pies themselves, and sell them for 2 cents lower that any of the bakeries were charging.

It was a roaring success. Their pies sold out quickly, and very soon they had managed to bring down the price of all kinds of pastry in Philadelphia.

In fact, even to this very day, their acheivements are remembered as the remarkable Pie rates of Penn's aunts.

There are two guys who have been lost in the desert for weeks, and they're at death's door. As they stumble on, hoping for salvation in the form of an oasis or something similar, they suddenly spy, through the heat haze, a small tree off in the distance.
As they get closer, they can see that the tree is draped with rasher upon rasher of bacon. There's smoked bacon, crispy bacon, life-giving juicy nearly-raw bacon, all sorts. And the smell... oh, the glorious smell!"
"Look Pepe," says the first man. "It's a bacon tree!"
"You're right!" says Pepe, "We're saved!"
Pepe doesn't wait another second. He runs up to the tree salivating at the prospect of food. But just as he gets to within five feet of the tree, there's the sound of machine gun fire, and he is shot down in a hail of bullets.
His friend quickly drops down on the sand, and calls across to the dying Pepe.
"Pepe! Pepe! What on earth happened?"
And with his dying breath Pepe calls back: "Ugh, run, run! It's not a Bacon Tree after all..."

Thanx Noam but I need Cincy. My sister has been sitting in traffic for 4 hours trying to get INTO Cincy from Nashville. Traffic has stopped and no one knows why. She is with my 10 year old nephew and on her way here. Anyone know where I can get an accurate up to the minute traffic report? I'm ttrying to see what I can find out for her.

Is she coming up 75 from Kentucky? You could try calling the KY or OH state police.

Welcome home!
USS Ohio SSGN-726

The submarine USS Ohio returned to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor on Monday after 14 months of what its former commander called "action-thriller movie" missions in the western Pacific Ocean.

The Ohio, the oldest of 18 Trident ballistic subs, was the first of four to be converted to carry conventional cruise missiles and special forces.

Why is this not surprising? Is this the way you expect a man of faith to act? Why should he care what Obama thinks? Why should he care what gay and secularist Americans think? He never has before. Either he's a cold, calculating opportunist whose faith takes a back seat to fame and fortune or he's got a spiritual agenda that differs from the one he projects to the people who lavish him with their trust and their treasure.

Jonahsand, yesterday:

My quarrel therefore is with the sheer volume of creationist posts compared with radical Islam posts. I feel like the latter remains the more pressing threat that demands lots more attention than it has been getting recently.

1) I'm sick of my schools, which I pay freaking taxes for, teaching bull-baloney non-science. Or hearing other kids aren't getting a quality education in my own freaking country because you nuts think your ideology is far superior than proven science

2) You douchebags keep bringing up the crazy whenever we talk about creationism, and it almost blinds me in rage that you morons cannot disprove a damn thing we say, and somehow, somehow you guys end up controlling some political post that again reaches our kids. Or these guys' kids, cause I don't have any... You get the point.

222 Randall Gross  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 10:39:48pm

So Jonah -- if Rick Warren believes those things, is he being dishonest by taking them down? Does a pastor owe it to their church to be honest? If he believes those things shouldn't he still be proselytizing them, or are you saying he's a politician now, and not a pastor?

223 Dustyvet  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 10:39:49pm

A little village of Trids (like Smurfs only green) had built their water well on
the top of a hill. An evil troll took over the hill and wouldn't let the Trids
get any water. Every Trid that went up the hill was kicked down by the troll.
Frustrated, the Trids asked the local Rabbi for help. He climbed the hill and
got the water without any trouble from the troll. When he went back up the hill he
asked the troll why he had not kicked him down the hill. The troll replied:
Silly rabbi, kicks are for Trids.

Because frankly I find it dull. It's too easy a target. I also do not buy the slippery slope theory that Christians and Islamists are linking up over creationism now, terrorism later. Creationism is a bad thing and should be opposed, whether peddled by Islamists or Christians. But to have posts about creationism standing next to posts about bombings in Mumbai and Tel Aviv are sometimes jarring.

Look, I'm a big Maher watcher so you can tell where I'm coming from. The notion that Christian preachers can be corrupt and hypocritical is nothing novel to me.

I used to watch Maher when I was further left. Mostly for the comedy, but I stopped after he and his guests starting saying some sick stuff. He was one of the lefties that starting to really get to me and helped push me a little right.

Then it's probably because it's that you are missing the point.
It's not about having creationism as a personal belief or point of faith.

It's about certain "christians" use Creationism and Intelligent Design as a wedge for political power, trying to force Creationism and ID into the science curriculum. It's about those same "christians" linking up with groups doing the same thing in the Islamic world, thinking they have common aims. It's about the unintended consequence of their efforts, that once one religious view point is allowed as science, anything goes. See the recent kerfuffle over holiday displays for a microcosm of that mess.

Around here it's not anti-faith, it's about maintaining a watch on idiotarianism of all flavors. Claiming it's anti-faith is missing the point entirely.

Recently, the Minnesota Orchestra was doing Beethoven's Ninth under the baton of Milton Katims...
Now at this point, you must understand two things: Firstly, there's a quite long segment in this symphony where the bass violins don't have a thing to do. Not a single note for page after page. Secondly, there is a night club right across the street from the Minnesota's Orchestra Hall, rather favored by local musicians.
It had been decided that during this performance, once the bass players had played their parts in the opening of the Ninth, they were to quietly lay down their instruments and leave the stage, rather than sit on their stools looking and feeling dumb for twenty minutes. Well, once they got backstage, someone suggested that they trot across the street and drink a few brews.
After they had downed the first couple rounds, one said, "Shouldn't we be getting back? It'd be awfully embarrassing if we were late."
Another, presumably the one who suggested this excursion in the first place, replied, "Oh, I anticipated we could use a little more time, so I tied a string around the last pages of the conductor's score. When he gets down to there, Milton's going to have to slow the tempo way down while he waves the baton with one hand and fumbles with the string with the other."
So they had another round, and finally returned to the Opera house, a little tipsy by now. However, as they came back on stage, one look at their conductor's face told them they were in serious trouble. Katims was furious! And why not? After all...

It was the bottom of the Ninth, the basses were loaded, and the score was tied.

Why do I get the sense that Jonah's madly googling "omar' and "JeM?"

The answer is already here for anyone who is truly interested in GWOT.

When have trolls truly been interested in anything other than disruption and self-aggrandizement?

The Worldly Gospel sure is more attractive to Warren now.

That's how it looks to me, as well. But what do I know? I hadn't heard of him prior to some poor kidnap victim saving her life with his book.

276 Bacchus's daddy  Tue, Dec 23, 2008 10:59:02pm

I never paid much attention to Warren before all this hubbub. I thought he was a generally decent, intelligent guy, who had the misfortune to suffer from evangelicalism. He still might be a nice guy, for all I know, but he has some seriously misguided beliefs from his religion (which I still respect but no longer believe in) as well as a breathtaking naivete about the consequences of his associations.

/also news links about Mullah Omar and JeM are posted down a thread or two, if Jonah really cared about terror as stated he probably would have read them and been able to reply by now.

Some how this reminds me of the Arab cliche... keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.

Take it easy Gays.

Obama didn't pick Warren because he is anti Gay, he picked Warren to show which side he is on in the Mideast.

294 nyc redneck  Wed, Dec 24, 2008 8:22:57am

it is disappointing to see rick warren pick and choose new positions and behavior that are counter to what he has professed up till now.
he has changed his views so quickly and it appears so drastically that it is easy to question what his real beliefs, are at this point.
it appears he is seeking approval from his new expanding audience.
not acting as a religious leader who really adheres to his own faith based principles.
that's a problem. this kind of behavior is what gets someone branded an opportunist. opportunists come from a position of weakness.
who can admire or trust them?

The pick of Warren for the inagural is telling. Look at this guy's associations and "outreach;" and then look at his slavish homage to Syria's Assad. What is it about "first the Saturday people, then the Sunday people" does this guy not get?

Ok, I keep thinking that the 'progressives' will get over their 'be nice to everyone and they'll HAVE to be nice to you' wishful fantasy.

arrgh.

Obama didn't pick Warren because he is anti Gay, he picked Warren to show which side he is on in the Mideast.

Besides, it seems the militant activists keep forgetting (or avoiding the fact) that Obama ran on a platform of marriage being between one man and one woman.
They won't call him on that, though because Obama is the One and surely he must've been lying for political convenience.

Nor will they go after minorities who voted for prop. 8. Therefor I question their principles and just how badly they want to change the traditional meaning of marriage to include gays, since the only one's they are going after is white Christians who supported a yes vote on prop. 8.

Reporters for the MSM won't mention that Obama is against gay marriage. It's as if he never said it.
Once again the Left simply refuses to accept reality.

298 SteveRogers  Wed, Dec 24, 2008 9:06:30am

If those on the Left, and the MSM keep protesting Warren, Obama will throw him under the bus in a heartbeat. Why he hasn't yet, or why he picked him in the first place is a mystery to me.
