The Slums
by Kenneth Patchen

That should be obvious
Of course it won’t
Any fool knows that.
Even in the winter.
Consider for a moment.
What?
Consider what!
They never have.
Why now?
Certainly it means nothing.
It’s all a lie.
What else could it be?
That’s right.
Sure.
Any way you look at it.
A silk hat.
A fat belly.
A nice church to squat in.
My holy ass…
What should they care about?
It’s quaint.
Twelve kids on the fire escape…
Flowers on the windowsill…
You’re damn right.
That’s the way it is.
That’s just the way it is.

Merry Christmas Lizards everywhere

5 melinwy  Wed, Dec 24, 2008 11:42:43pm

A Different Christmas Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many
people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our
U.S service men and women for our being able to celebrate these
festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people
stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

38 IslandLibertarian  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 12:02:35am

I remembered this from the late 50s...

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the pad
Not a hip cat was swinging, and that's nowhere Dad
The stove was hung up on that stocking routine,
In hopes that the fat man would soon make the scene.

The kids had all had it, so they hit their sacks,
And me and the bride had begun to relax,
When there started a rumble that came on real frantic
So I opened the window to figure the panic.

I saw a square short that was making fat tracks,
Being pulled by eight dogs who was wearing hat racks,
And a funny old geezer was flipping his lid,
He told em to make it and, man, like they did.

I couldn't help digging the scene on the roof
As I stood there just waiting for chubby to goof.
They stood by the chimney in bunches and clusters,
'Til tubby slid down, coming on like gangbusters.

His threads were the squarest and I had to chuckle,
In front, not in back, was his ivy league buckle.
The mop on his chin hid his button-down collar
And with that red nose, man, he looked like a baller.

Like he was the squarest, the most absolute,
But face it, who cares when he left all that loot.
He laid the jazz on me and fled from the gig.
Wailing, "Have a cool yule and man, later, like dig."

Yeah, first time I landed at Lindbergh... looking out at the elephants at the zoo just above their heads... quite a plunge. Not quite as bad as HK, but close.

O come, O come Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Merry Christmas to all of you and God bless!

Little Bail-Out Boy

Crap they sold to thee
Pa rum pum pum pum
Your mortgaged house to seize,
Pa rum pum pum pum
All income you'll fling
Pa rum pum pum pum
At the feet of the Kings
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum

How to reform them
Pa rum pum pum pum,
As they're so dumb ...

Little Bail-out boy
Pa rum pum pum pum
Now you need a loan too,
Pa rum pum pum pum
There is no pity to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
Sacrifice for our King
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum

Shall I bail out you!
Pa rum pum pum
With my income.

Congress then voted
Pa rum pum pum pum
The Baboons and scum reclined
Pa rum pum pum pum
While we signed the checks for them
Pa rum pum pum
And worked out best for them
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum

Then they mooned you and I
Mooned you and I, mooned you and I,
Why are we so dumb?

With ransomed regards to Coleridge's Kubla Khan (re-post):

Bail-Out Khan

In Sanadu did Bail-Out Khan
Estately inflated homes decree:
Sacrificial tax-payer arteries, ran
Through pockets measureless to man
For their godless fees.

Twice five generations of fertile mind
By dull academic blade pruned down:
Grown-over gardens bereft of skills,
Blossomed once production-bearing trees;
And mental bounty of industrial wills,
Enterprising sunny spots of greenery.

But o'er the deep pragmatic chasm slanted
The entitled umbrella of smug union cover!
A savage place ! unholy and underhanded
Ne'er before by bailing loons so vaunted
The sheep wailed for their tax-hike lover!

And from this chasm, with fearless turmoil seething,
One hundred million barrels rolled their greeting,
Mighty fountains of prescriptions forced:
Amid swiftly cocked intermittent burst
Retribution screamed fiercely like rebounding hail,
Off the gamy buttocks of those continuing to bail:
And mid these stinging rocks at once and ever
To shut up quickly their criminal endeavor:

Five year plans building with lazy motion
Through carbon fleeced caps, their fingers ran,
Now cementing down entitlement measures to man,
Drowning productivity in a lifeless ocean :
And 'mid the bailouts the Bumbler heard from far
Keynsian voices prophesying more!

The dread harbinger of juggernaut inflation
Inexorably coursed beneath the waves;
Soliciting silent auction of a bankrupt nation
With zero assets that could be saved.
It was self destruction of rare device,
Inflated entitlement's unlimited price!

Quickly the Baboons with Ivy horns
Howled of basic services withdrawn:
So Californians were agin black mailed,
And economic freedoms quickly jailed,
Chastising again the feeble pawns.

Could we recollect for free
The siren's symphony and song,
Deeply leveraged and so risky
Promised hope of homes gone wrong,
Your saving burned in steaming enterprise!
Warming others with your selfless sacrifice !

And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !
Their greedy eyes, their floating hair!
Cuff iron chains round their thighs
And close your wallet with holy dread,
For they on taxpayer flesh hath fed,
Redistributing the milk of Paradise.

It's from the Willy Shakesdown play, Hank III:

Vain attempts flung as ignorant pork;
As fake wealths re-inflate our house
With deep ignorance of debts reburied
Now our serfs rebound with fresh mortgage wreaths;
Our bruised mortgage arms in sling of emoluments ..."

A Different Christmas Poem

A REALLY different Christmas poem:

It was Christmas Eve night at the poorhouse,
And all of the paupers were there.
I stepped in because it was snowing,
And snow always screws up my hair.

Near a pot-bellied stove, sat a pot-bellied man.
He spoke with some lumps in his throat.
His story was sad, and his diction was bad,
And this is a song that he wrote:

"I once was the jolliest fat man,
With roses in all of my cheeks.
I'd load up my sled every Christmas,
And go on a drunk for two weeks.

"My friends said they saw me on rooftops,
And sliding down chimneys at dawn.
With my reindeer in hand,
I would glide 'cross the land,
And wake up on somebody's lawn.

"Then one morning my wife left this message:
'Each Christmas I've spent by myself.
I'm sick of your stupid traditions,
So I've run off to Spain wit' a elf.'

Just then the old man started dyin'.
He screamed "May the Lord take my soul!"
We went through his wallet,
To see who he was,
The address read simply "North Pole".

So the next time you go by the poorhouse,
If by the poorhouse you go,
Just take off your hat to a dead guy who's fat,
And whisper a silent "Ho Ho".

GMAC Will Become a Bank as Fed Bolsters U.S. Plan to Save GM

"GMAC LLC won Federal Reserve approval to become a bank holding company, a switch that may enable the money-losing auto and home lender to tap U.S. financial bailout programs and help keep General Motors Corp. in business.

GMAC joins more than 190 regional banks, commercial lenders, insurers and credit-card issuers seeking funds from the Treasury’s bailout plan for financial firms.

American Express Co., the biggest U.S. card company by sales, and CIT Group Inc., the biggest independent commercial lender last year, received capital infusions this week after converting into banks."

*this* should warm everyone up no end:

As Nazareth’s Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas, they are playing down the appearance of a confrontational Islamic banner that challenges an elemental Christian belief.

Journalists visiting the city saw two large banners--one in English, one in Arabic--hanging in the plaza in front of the Basilica of the Annunciation, with a verse from the Koran (112:1-4) contradicting the New Testament proclamation that Jesus is the “only begotten” of God.

“In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful, Say (O Muhammad): He is Allah, (the) One and Only. Allah, the Eternal, the Absolute. He begetteth not, nor was begotten, and there is none like unto him,” the banner reads.

OK, so whereas even the Encyclopedia of Mod Rule's current (but possibly ever-shifting) analysis, of Richard III, as follows, explores a drift between protagonist and antagonist within that same character:

Richard of Gloucester is an exceptional creation of Shakespeare's in that his character constantly changes and shifts and, in doing so, alters the dramatic structure of the play[1],

Similarly, one could say that whereas Hank III's character also constantly changes and shifts and, in doing so, alters the dramatic structure of the TARP, therein one of the major problems lies -- shifts, and twists.

Yesterday we were discussing Kwanzaa and lo and behold Ann Coulter has a column on it's American founder. The funny thing though is that the column appears to be an old one. Did she re-run it? I try to research articles and it appears it is a 2002 column.

Column

I was intrigued and decided to read more about the founder, Karenga. One interesting article was this one What a guy

Until a few days ago I just thought Kwanzaa was a celebration of family and a bountiful harvest. Hearing how it started here in America and by whom has shed some light on why some of my black friends say that they only celebrate Christmas.

How do we heat up a Honey-Baked Spiral Sliced ham without drying it out?

I usually warm it on a low heat with some water in the pan, just a little, and keep it covered with foil. Not the foil it comes in btw lol

Merry Christmas!
Blessed Nativity!
Christ is Born!

May you all, whatever your beliefs, have a great and blessed day!

Come, let us greatly rejoice in the Lord as we tell of this present mystery.

The middle wall of partition has been destroyed;
The flaming sword turned back,
The cherubim withdraw from the tree of life,
And I partake of the delight of Paradise from which I was cast out through disobedience.

For the express Image of the Father, the Imprint of His eternity,
Takes the form of a servant,
And without undergoing change He comes forth from a Mother who knew not wedlock.

For what He was, He has remained, true God:
And what He was not, He has taken upon Himself,
Becoming man through love for mankind.

-St. Germanos

Easy. Put it on a rack in a pan. Put water or maybe apple juice in the bottom of the pan - about a cup - cover the ham with tin foil. Put it in the oven at about 200F until warm. Enjoy.

There is very reason to believe that Jesus would have celebrated Hanukkah. While the best source for the miracle is found in the Babylonian Talmud, the story is in many Christian Bibles (I Maccabees 4:52-59 & II Maccabees 10:1-8).

Yeah, they are! When we first took him out for his runs, it was impossible not to laugh -- besides the usual puppy clumsiness, he seemed to just about double up lengthwise, then stretch out half again his normal length.

I've gotten used to his proportions now, but watching him run can still sometimes caunse chuckles, especially when he's trying to keep up with his buddy the pit bull!

Morning and Merry Christmas everyone from the Tri-Cities of North Eastern Tennessee.

Sitting here with a steaming cup of coffeee in hand, 140 lbs of hound dog laying on my feet, 1 lb of stray kitten (that was found being carried around by aforementioned hound a few weeks ago) in my lap. Watched the Sun break over the Mountains this morning and realized how lucky I am to be living in this place at this time.

Thinking about all the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors and Coasties that are out on the lines in Iraq or Afghanistan, at sea, or stationed far away from family and friends in Germany, Korea, Japan and other places. Thinking about the Cop who is out on the beat patrolling our streets while the kids wake up on Christmas Morning without them. The Jailers who spent the entire night babysitting criminals in our local jails and prisons.

Thinking about all these folks, and the many others that will be keeping our nation running this morning and won't be at home with loved ones.

Merry Christmas and Thank You America.

This is the miracle of Christmas.

For first time, Christmas official holiday in Iraq

Merry Christmas, Lizardia.

Thank you United States Military that I'm free to celebrate another one.

They may have celebrated it during the Mongol Empire period (c.1200's). The Muslim Mongols pretty much let the Christians do whatever—until their Arab subjects complained they weren't Muslim enough. [This is just conjecture—the one historical source I know of, written by Nestorian Christians of Iraq and Iran before the Muslims broke their civilization, does not mention Christmas or Nativity, IIRC.

Whatever the case, this does not dim the great and historic achievement of the United States military and their allies. Triumphus, victoria et pax!

Has the build, yes - but with a bit longer legs and a little heftier. Doesn't do much sitting up straight unless he has something to lean on like a sofa. We're glad, really, because of the back thing. A friend of ours lost a dachshund who broke it's back just jumping.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's dachsie! I'm worried about that with Frank, too, but he insists on the sitting up, and we haven't been able to find a way to keep him from jumping. All we can do, I guess, is hope the pit bull part will give him extra back strength.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
And He shall reign forever and ever,

Of course we have our Christmas cards with snowflakes, snowmen, reindeers, sleighs which we have on display while we have our Christmas lunch of cold ham, cold turkey, cold pork, prawns, oysters, salads...and afterwards we head outside for a game of backyard cricket or just sit around outside sipping our nice cold beers and wine

I haven't read the entire thread, but was sufficiently intrigued by the bit of a poem put up by Charles at the top of the thread so that I Wiki'd Kenneth Patchen and this is what Wiki has to say (in part):

In 1942 Patchen collaborated with the composer John Cage on the radio play The City Wears A Slouch Hat.

In the 1950s, Patchen collaborated with Charles Mingus, reading his poetry with Mingus' jazz combo. Unfortunately, no known recording of their collaboration exists.

Moe Asch of Folkways Records made some recordings of Patchen reading his poetry and excerpts from one of his novels. These recordings were released as Kenneth Patchen Reads with Jazz in Canada (1959), Selected Poems of Kenneth Patchen (1960), and Kenneth Patchen Reads His Love Poems (released 1961).[6] From Albion Moonlight was recorded later at Patchen's home but not released until 1972 by Folkways.

The Jazz in Canada album was recorded in Vancouver and was recorded the same week as a live performance done for CBC Radio. The LP was also released on Folkways and included a mimeographed pamphlet featuring poems and the jazz musicians credits. The group playing on the recording was the Allan Neil Quartet. It was released on CD by the label Locust Music in 2004.

On January 21, 2008, El Records released a recording entitled, Rebel Poets in America that includes classic poetry readings with jazz accompaniment by both Kenneth Patchen and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, including Patchen classics like "The Murder of Two Men by a Young Kid Wearing Lemon Colored Gloves" and "I Went To The City."

Many of his poems have been set to music by David Bedford. Others who have also set Patchen's work to music include: saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, with his solo album entitled 14 love poems + 10 more released on the FMP label; composer Kyle Gann has set his voice reading a text to music (see below) and violinist Carla Kihlstedt set a text on the "Patchen" track of her solo Tzadik release Two Foot Yard.

The song What Shall we do Without Us by American avant-rock band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum uses text by Patchen.

Thanks for that poetry and the reference to he who was an obscure artist to me before you left that quote and thanks again for littlegreenfootballs Charles!
And a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year as well.

It's a beautiful winter morning here along the Lake Michigan shoreline... the sun is shining and the day is glorious. I got up early this morning to take the dog for a run down by the lighthouse, and start my day with some quiet meditation and peaceful contemplation.

I have a nice Christmas breakfast laid out, and I'm enjoying a hot cup of dark Italian Roast and a homemade cinnamon roll. Very shortly I'll be turning on some Christmas jazz to start preparing our Christmas dinner... Honey Baked ham with all the trimmings.

But I would be most remiss if I didn't wish a Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy Holidays to all of the fine members of our Armed Forces and to their families as well.
It's extremely difficult to be doing the work of an American Serviceman/woman at the best of times and SO trying at this particular time of year and I humbly THANK YOU for serving and protecting our Nation.
And to all the families of those American Troops - it's hard, anxious and sometimes a time filled with dread when your son, husband, brother or friend is on Active Duty so far away from home; especially so at Christmas. And so I thank all of the families of those American Troops for suffering the sacrifice of not having their loved ones with them today.
Thank you, all.

There is a rampant rumor that Santa's business is now in financial distress.
Materials & deer feed are costing more .
The elves in the UTW (United Toy Workers ) are balking at renagotiating their contract or apprioving any give backs.
After the first of the year, Santa will be in front of Congress seeking a bail out. Senator Harry Reid has said that he will consider it, but he has to drop the Santa thing , as many Muslims consider the term offensive & feel excluded.

Oh, and I have a prayer request for all Praying Lizards - my hubby of 27 years has been in ICU since the 16th. He's been sedated since they intubated him. He's doing better, but he had a tracheotomy the other day and they've been cutting way back on the sedation so we can wake him up and let him know what's going on. He has no recollection of going to the hospital. He's not a happy camper, as now he has an incredibly sore throat (from the intubation) and now the pain of the tracheotomy. He's stable, and they are trying to get a bed for him at Select Specialty Hosp. in Phx to be weaned off the vent and rehabilitated (he needs to learn how to speak with the trach and get his strength back).

Our two sons and I will be heading over there later this morning. Gotta let the nurses do their morning rounds/reports/shift change.

This is a Merry Christmas for us, actually. He's alive and will be okay. Can't get any more blessed than that.

Somewhere, out there
Just on the edge or our sight
There is someone,
Someone who needs you
Needs us
To show the way
(not just at this time,
not just this year)
to demonstrate with deeds
actions
and words
Why
Why we help
Why we care
Why we love
And
Why we celebrate
(not just at this time,
not just this year)
To do so is simple, really
No special robes
No fancy books
Just a touch,
Just a look
Or
An unexpected smile
The specifics are not the reason
Not the candles
Not the tree
Not even the birth
The reason is love
Love for all
Shown by all
And
Carried forward,
(not just at this time,
not just this year)

I've been up close to four hours. Long before the sun even thought of rising, The Kid was tapping on my door, shouting that Santa had brought him a new lap top. Half-way through opening the rest of his loot, he logged onto the Webkins' site to register his four new Webkins.

I screwed up, though. I forgot to write a thank-you letter from Santa for the cookies, milk, carrots and reindeer feed. I'm gonna' hafta' write one and "find" it somewhere--maybe on the mantle.

Gotta' go set up his air-hockey game. bbl

Ho! Ho! Ho! to you too Mandy!
Don't know if you saw it last night, but I extended my appreciation to you for the cookies, half drunk milk and especially the carrot remains Santa's reindeer left from your kid's gift to them.
I thought that was very special and I do think your kid has a great mom.
Merrry Christmas to you.

Merry Christmas/Happy Hannuka to you opnion!
Not only was Obama's address unprecedented, it was pre-recorded - he didn't even take the time from his busy schedule to go to visit any of our military bases in Hawaii and address those troops in person while the speech was simulcast by radio or television.

I can only reiterate my heartfelt thanks to all American Military personnel and their families today.
God knows that our Nation appreciates the sacrifices which you and your families and friends are making on our behalf. Again,
Thank you.

Man, that guy is a piece of work! Pre-recorded, Sheesh.
I have just withdrawn my benefit of the doubt. That'lll learn em.
He will visit troops when he needs a photo op

re: #342 Irish Rose

A blessed Christmas morning to you all!

My two teenagers are still sound asleep upstairs... the days of getting up at the crack of dawn to open their Christmas presents are long gone.

Fess up, lizards... who among you has a lump of coal in their stocking this morning? ;)

I got two lumps...maybe I need therepy...Merry Christmas to all!...friend and foe alike everywhere...

384 ryannon  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 7:17:51am

When Bush works out, the media paints him as a slacker ignoring his job.
On the other hand when Barry works out they get orgasmic over how cool it is to have a president who works out. Why would that be? Hmmm

...and btw: MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy Hannukah (I know this is probably spelled wrong, so sorry!)

408 Cdat88  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 7:43:01am

Merry Christmas to all. No talk of war, politics, hate or violence for me today. I will try to entertain the thought that just for a single 24 hour period, the world could try something different, and have peace. I know that it has yet to happen, but that, to me, is true Hope of Change.

Best wishes to all my new friends and associates here on LGF, especially Sharmuta ;). Here is hoping we could have a day, someday soon, when we have nothing bad to discuss when we meet here.

No matter what your belief is, I hope you have a fine holiday, and return home safe to your loved ones. See all of you tomorrow, and try not to eat TOO much, even though it is fun. And I know this group will not forget those serving abroad. I spent 6 Christmases in far-flung locations, and had my share of MRE meals (Ham and chicken loaf can be a poor substitute for turkey and dressing) to celebrate the holiday. They all deserve just a moment of attention. They truly do make this all possible.

Good morning and Merry Christmas. I would like to report Mrs. MacGregor and an associate at Human Services Counsel personally collected and delivered 3,000 gifts to children in foster care this year.

Gifts were given to homeless single young mothers also. Other organizations contributed to include Salvation Army, Christian community organization, Juvenile Justice, and area Churches. Gifts collected included clothes, toiletries, diapers, and food. And toys. We also contributed to LGF.

It is in this spirit of unselfishness and kindness that Mrs. MacGregor and I would like to wish everyone here a very happy and merry Christmas.

I offer some of my prayers today to this community. Especially for a renewal of peace in every Lizard's heart regardless of faith. May all who are facing trials on this day of hope be protected from anxiety.

As I recommended to a friend last night, receive the Christchild as a true baby in your arms, really conform you mind to it, and then hold him all day -- people find it tougher to pick on someone holding a baby. If they persist, tell them "Shut the Fuck Up! Can't you see I'm holding the baby Jesus, dumbass?!" I suspect the offender will back away slowly...

Blessings on you all! Merry Christmas!

Yeah, well I'm the one who almost got booted from the Bible Study for doing "Mary - as a jewish mother" for a portion of Mark's Gospel.

Why I celebrate Christmas, by the world's most famous atheist

'I am perfectly happy on Christmas day to say Merry Christmas to everybody,' Dawkins said. 'I might sing Christmas carols - once I was privileged to be invited to Kings College, Cambridge, for their Christmas carols and loved it.

'I actually love most of the genuine Christmas carols. I can't bear Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and you might think from that that I was religious, that I can't bear the ones that make no mention of religion. But I just think they are dreadful tunes and even more dreadful words. I like the traditional Christmas carols.'

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!

I know, everyone has said it a dozen times or more online today, but I'm adding mine from Central Illinois with a hopeful wish for each of you to have a very great day. It will be movie day in my house, as the son will watch movies nonstop today. There might be a Scrabble game set up between the daughter, the hubby, and me, but we'll see. That's not a priority today.

Hamas is ringing in Christmas the only way it knows how. It's continuing the kassam and mortar attacks, and is threatening suicide bombings should Israel carry out ground operations in Gaza.

Israel must take off the gloves if it wants to have any chance for peace. Muddling along isn't any way to exist. Hamas and the other terrorists know this and exploit the situation since they know that Israel's resolve is being eroded on a daily basis.

How's the kiddo enjoying his Satellite?

Where were you when I was a kid... I wish someone like you would have had a word with my dad. His philosophy was that idle hands are the devil's play ground, and if we spare the rod we spoil the child.

Idle hands have invented many things--it's hard to dream when you're busy all the time.

The one with the cute blond kid in glasses.

It was written and narrated by Jean Shepherd who was hilarious.

You know, I have no idea what we're having today. We really don't care about making a big meal for Christmas. We'll probably do leftovers, sandwiches, or something simple.

I'm usually the same way but we had a turkey sitting in the freezer and I had a hankering to make up a batch of whatever turkey soup*.

I wish I could be comfortable doing that, but I'm such a bad cook I do much better with a formal recipe. Which is why my husband does most of the cooking, as he's much better at it.

God I wish you had given my dad a good talking to... he once deflated my soccer ball after I gave him a fathers day gift. He said I didnt have enough to do.

p.s. I painted the car red for father'd day one year. Took 3 whole cans of paint, the gararge was a mess... and the paint brushes were ruined... even the windshield was painted for good measure.

re: #550 shanec99

You know it annoys me... the Arabs have Egypt and most of Northern Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Lybia etc) a big presence in East Africa, all of the Arabian peninsula, most of South east Asia (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Jordan) and they begrudge Israel a tiny piece of land on the meditterenean with no oil or natural resources.
Good Lord those people are greedy... they sit on most of the worlds oil, most of North Africa, most of South East Asia, a big chunk of East Africa and still they want more.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with greed.
I think it has to do with power, and with wanting Israel and the Jews gone.

I learned a long time ago that the only way to improve is to just keep trying, and discover your areas of "expertise". But then I have always loved to experiment in the kitchen when I cook. I see a new recipe I try it the first time to the letter and then start thinking of ways to modify it.

But you have one of the best arrangements, having a full-time chef. ;)

Good morning, Real, and Merry Christmas!

I was trying to make fun of HH's spelling - "tatters", not "taters" LOL.

Hey Hoops! Uh, what is Robert Redford Pie ?

Warning the following recipe is for only holidays...pretty rich.
___
1 c. flour
1/2 c. butter
Pecans, finely chopped
1 (8 oz.) cream cheese
1 c. powdered sugar
1 (12 oz.) Cool Whip
1 lg. pkg. instant chocolate pudding
3 c. cold milk

Mix together flour, butter, and pecans. Press into bottom of 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and 1/2 of Cool Whip. Spread over first. Layer as soon as its cool. Spread chocolate pudding over this mixture, then spread over 1/2 Cool Whip on top. You can add a shaved chocolate bar for a pretty top.
