Christmas Open

Open | Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 2:09:53 pm PST

Here’s a Christmas Day open thread, to try out a new LGF Blog tool that splits front page posts into an excerpt and a “below the fold” full page. (We had the feature before, but the new method simplifies things.)

Here’s the rest of the post, which says nothing and exists only for testing purposes.

Hate the new feature. It means that when on a slow connection the page loads for two minutes and I still cannot read the articles.

Hate the excerpt and below the fold feature on all Web sites it appears on!

Looks like the Phoenix, AZ, police department got a nice Christmas present:

Los Angeles (AP) - The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

re: #11 yochanan

16 amphibian  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 2:24:10pm

First of all, a merry Christmas to all the Christian lizards. Thank you, Charles, for running this site.

Second. Interesting idea, but if I may suggest an improvement, could hovering over the link pop up the longer version, as it does in the news items at the top of the page? It (still) takes a while to download a page of LGF, so this will both save space on the front page, and make all the information available without additional clickage.

17 rawmuse  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 2:24:16pm

A Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! If you are traveling, be safe, arrive alive! We are all going to need each other in the weeks to come.

(repost from prior thread)
Tonight is the fifth night of Chanukah.
Because of the way the Hebrew calendar is set, the fifth night can never land on the Sabbath, implying a great spiritual darkness.
"This is the potential of the Hanukkah candle -- to illuminate the greatest darkness."

Charles:

I don't use Smarty; LGF has a small library of command tags that can be inserted into posts for different purposes - like images, videos, audio, etc. They aren't simple template tags, they can actually trigger entire sub-scripts according to the context.

Well, I do it by hand - your mileage may differ.

I just think Smarty has too many features - looking at some of them, I don't think I would ever have any use for them and they would therefore just be a waste of space. I think I'll just do it by hand.

Thanks!

May I suggest a hybrid approach? Using a tool to generate code and then optimizing it by hand is an admittedly old-fashioned approach, but one that in a lot of cases, works well.

Happy Christmas all! Anyhow... lol I need advise, suggestions opinions because looks like potential trouble on the way! holy crap!

In a nut shell, a "friend" came to stay here 3 months ago and was sponging off of me the whole time. I finally kicked her out and she's worn out her welcome at the other place. A neighbor here who is a piano player who has given her a signing gig with him offered to let her stay in the spare area of the basement in our building.

I will not let this person ever step foot in my apartment even if it snows again! Thing is, the piano player picked up a futon last month that was free for the taking so that when she was staying here, she had something other than the blow up bed. She left here 2 weeks ago, thank god, but now that she is returning, he believes I have an obligation to give her that futon, since he picked it up in his van and now tells me what a huge inconvenience it was to do that. I don't even want her anywhere near this building!

Do I have an obligation to give them the futon which I've been using as a sofa or is it tough shit for her and for him? They are only friends who work together and not a relationship. I told him I really don't want her here and I'll give her the blow up bed. He is really pissed at me for keeping the futon for myself.

Okay.... please advise! thank you.

It's not like the piano player payed for the futon or anything. Think about it: if they were to sue you, what would they sue you for, the cost of the futon ($0)?

4 days of rain in Southern California? Wow, that is an epic amount. Hope the flood ways are all clear of bums, er, I mean the Homeless.

We had a heck of a squall move in this morning, just before dawn, we had thunder and lightning, small hail and pounding rain. But, it all cleared up in time for our annual walk at the beach, which was the usual 4 miles, but today I needed the full wet gear. Right now it is gorgeous.

I didn't think I was obligated to give it back but I wanted to check. These are all very forceful people with big tempers. There was no agreement. It was in my place to use for guests and she left.

I told him I don't want her back here because she will never leave! I now have a sofa and can actually have guests. Makes my apartment feel like a home. And if she is too cozy in the basement, that's not good!

I was shocked he got mad that I offered the blow up bed and not the futon. Having neighbors angry isnt' fun, but neither is being bullied and manipulated.

Would it be uncool for me to tell the landlord?

LOL That's what I'll tell him.

123 nyc redneck  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 3:08:22pm

re: #75 Teacake!

i think you should answer the question of why you want to keep the futon.
if you want and need it, keep it.
if you are keeping it to cause problems for the person who wore out her welcome,
then that is a deeper issue. i'm trying to imagine myself in your situation, if the person was a real sob, i might pitch the futon on the street in the rain (if i didn't need it) but if she was just a bore who wore out her welcome, i would give her the futon.
sometimes it is impossible to reward people for bad behavior, even if you want to.
how bad was her transgression? did she try to steal your guy=no futon.

I am so happy that someone invented food processors. Years ago, my knuckles almost were shredded into the latke battter whenever I made them! A grater is not fun unless you are a masochist.

I have been using the same recipe for eons, as it gives the exact measurements of the ingredients...much easier to deal with when you are cooking for so many.

The thing I miss about Tower Records is that they had a classical section (actually a separate room, usually) where it was quieter, and the help that they had in there were totally different from the help that were in the Pop and Rock sections. It was a nice contrast.

Oh Yeah -

Lizardim -

Almost forgot - Did my Cyber-Mitzvah for the season last week - put together a system out of cast off stuff for a tenant who wanted to be online and already had TV and Phone with Cablevision.
As Follows:

eMachines Monster 500 (Converted to Windows 2000 Pro OS)
Dell 19" 3x4 Aspect Ratio LCD Screen
Canon Pixma MX-300 AIO Printer (USB Cable was STILL CONNECTED!)
Harmon-Kardon Speakers - 2.0 Stereo
MS Wired Laser Mouse (USB)
Dell Basic Keyboard (PS-2)
Digital Concepts (Sakar) 4 MP Electrocam with SD Card and Wire still there.

The tenant's expense was to buy Ink for the printer as it was almost out, probably why it along with the rest of the stuff was abandoned. Due to Landlord responsibilities for abandoned property, it was left that the components were "borrowed" from the Landlord. Trust me, this old guy will give them much more "reasonable care" than would happen in our storage area.

Added Picasa 3, Firefox 3, Open Office3, PC Doctor Anti-Spy, AVG 8 "Free," and Adobe Reader 9 with Firefox Adobe Add Ons/Plug Ins. His Cable Bill is more or less "the same" for the next year. AND - my 70'ish tenant is a Very Happy Camper. Makes you feel good when you DO good.

Agreed. The Day the Earth Stood Still is atrocious. But to the left's credit, the original was made 50 years ago so they can't be blamed too much. Benjamin Button, pretty good if you're into long dramas. I'm not really, but it's still a good movie. Valkyrie, seeing it in a few hours.

re: #75 Teacake!

Okay.... please advise! thank you.

Sorry, Dear Abby & Ann Landers are both dead.

Excellent article (h/t Instapundit):

What If New York Goes Bust?

Forget the car companies and Lehman Brothers. Two of the biggest states in the country are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, thanks to ridiculous union agreements that can’t be changed.

If California and New York State were businesses, they'd be going bankrupt. If you're among the nearly 20 percent of Americans who live or work in these two states, the fiscal crisis is coming home for the holidays. And the worst is still on its way.

California, the world's eighth largest economy, will run out of money in March if the deadlocked legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger can't come to an agreement on tax-hikes and spending cuts. Its bonds have been reduced to near-junk status after decades of borrowing and spending. State Treasurer Bill Lockyer summed up the situation in terms unhelpful to the tourist industry: "California's fiscal house is burning down."

In New York, Gov. David Paterson is trying to control a deficit, which has doubled to $15 billion since August. He proposed a potpourri of taxes and fees totaling $4 billion, ranging from non diet soft drinks, taxis, and iTunes purchases to high-end luxury items like fur coats and boats.

Soon after assuming office, Paterson said, "The era of buy now, pay later and later is over." To his credit, he is trying to walk the fiscally responsible talk, proposing $9 billion in spending-cuts and resisting a rise in state income taxes. But government budgets have become a beast that is almost impossible to tame. Paterson announced a hard line hiring freeze in July, only to find out in October that 31,684 new employees had been added to the state payroll.

I agree with all of what you said. Nothing was more fun than watching MJ and some other player one-upping each other going one-on-one for 5 straight plays in a fourth quarter. Bird had it, Magic had it, Dominique had it, MJ personified it. For crying out loud, Chuck Person had it. I haven't forgotten those epic battles between Person and Bird. So much fun...

Not before we all go bankrupt.

That's the whole point of the article - New York and California could go bankrupt as soon as March.

It's a remarkable coincidence that those states who work so hard to protect unions via their laws seem to be having the most trouble, isn't it?

Personally.. I don't like Kobe..
I would trade the entire Pacers team for him in a nanosecond.
It amazes me to see the beauty of his play..and his competitiveness..
Reminds me of when MJ bet a teammate after a road tour that his luggage would come off the conveyor first.. He paid off somebody just to win the bet.
The man would not lose at anything.. Kobe is one of the most competitive athletes alive.. I'd put Tiger first..

This has been a fantastic game, by the way. This half has been phenomenal so far.

None of this news is lost on me. I live here. I know the drill.
My reasoning presently is that the situation can not be saved from itself.
The State will sink of its own weight, and have to be reformed from the ground up. All new contracts, major reforms.
Because, taxes can not go up forever. More businesses and people will leave the state, the people that produce the wealth will go away. It is already happening, and like a wave that has not broken, it can not be stopped.

As much I a don't like Ahnold, were it not for him, we already would have 12 percent sales tax, plus raised property taxes, plus increased income tax.

re: #285 rawmuse

Seems like that is the wave of the future, doesn't it? I really don't know who to believe. I find it hard to believe that the Bush Administration fucked up so thouroughly when all the economic indicators were going along fine.

Some things were obvious. A person with a $35,000 income shouldn't be able to finance a half-million dollar house. Notice I say finance not buy of afford. People got mortgages that they quite simply had no business of getting. A lot of that was caused by the Leftwing groups who'll scream "racisim" if a minority can't get a mortgage that they clearly cannot afford.

And the Democrats have been hoping that the economy would tank since before Bush was sworn into office for his first term. They've been saying "worst economy since the Great Depression. They've cried wolf so many times that they simply have no credibility whatsoever.

It's interesting how gas prices went through the roof just before the election, isn't it? And the price of oil started dropping the moment Bush said "Drill here"!

Of course, Obama has promised to continue the energy policy that guarantees America will fall behind energy wise. And without affordable energy the economy does go to hell in a handbasket. As was apparently the case this summer. Energy prices certainly were high, and, according to just about everyone, the economy is really in the shitter.

I don't know what is best here. I don't know who to trust, if anyone. Whatever the case, as long as they are bailing everone out, I want mine.

The impression that I get, viewing it from the outside, is that Schwartzenegger wanted to do a lot of reform, but the voters (many of the same voters that gave him the job) balked when reform was put to the vote. And certainly the California leftislature is Democrat. As we all know, Democrats would rather everything collapse than for a Republican be seen as doing good by the populace.

Under the circumstances, it is difficult to imagine that Schwartzenegger could have done much better than he has. The responsiblity for that lies with the voters. They should have pitched the Donks across the board if they really want reform.

highly paid (and highly taxed) people unemployed; Citigroup laid off nearly 50,000 well paid, and heavily taxed people and don't forget all those law firms and lawyers, paralegals, secretaries that used to represent those companies, and etc. - think of Michigan if the Big 2 were to go out of business altogether, that's how much the Financial Services sector of the economy meant to NY!

I got a real high priced chess set, I don't have Bishops, I got Cardinals...:)

Yep and France gets over 70% of its electricity from Nuclear Power - an alternative source of energy that Obama and his new "advisors" and proposed appointees don't seem all that keen on, either!

Thank you, Dingy Harry Reid!

It appears that Overload Obama's efforts are aimed at crippling America, hobbling us, and further dumbing and enslaving all America... and of course, through America, more crippling of the world in which we live!

Congrats, man! I've only been unemployed once. In my case it worked out because the woman I was living with was diagnosed with melanoma almost on the very day my job ended. So I was able to stay at home and help her recover from the surgery. It still sucked not knowing where my next paycheck was coming from nor when I'd be getting it.

I hope you enjoy the new job.

Thanks! My husband is thrilled about it. We are on fixed income, and with the economy the way it is, well...doesn't look bright for us. So having ANY income is better than none!

I thought the 'original' Indian chess didn't have bishops because it didn't have a piece moving solely diagonally (ie., the bishop)...

And then the Persians expanded the pieces and the playing field, the board?

As was said by Neil Young, as I recall - Rust Never Sleeps. At 512, it kept getting slower. Replaced it with a "Mojave" 'Pute with 2 Gb Memory + 2 Gb Ready Boost. So far so good on the Mojave. Cleared what I needed/wanted from the XP and gave it an "Electronic Enema" - currently runs like a "raped ape."

Yeah, it's almost like the Democrats want to tank the Country. It's hard to believe that that would be what they are really trying to accomplish, but what they are doing so obviously will tank the Country. It's hard to believe that they would be that stupid that they didn't realize that is going to be the results.

At the same time, in retrospect it is obvious that the Welfare State would do more to hurt blacks, and especially black families, almost as bad as slavery. the only thing that makes me wonder if this wasn't the goal simply because if it was what they were trying to do they were wildly successful. It's hard to imagine a government project doing so "well" at accomplishing its goal.

That is my opinion. Accept the gift in the spirit intended. I get peeved when the gift I thought long and hard about is exchanged. I tend not to repeat the error and will just send a card the next time.

I even kept a truly hideous and grotesque metal owl standing about 2' high because it was a gift and my brother, for some reason only he can fathom, thought my wife and I would enjoy it. It is not exactly in a place of honor, but it is still out because it was a gift from the heart.

Sorry to hear that. I saw that video a few weeks ago and it really makes me cringe at what a ridiculously feminized society we've become. I always think the same thing when I see stories about "man-caves" (usually a room in the basement where guys can watch football and drink beer without bothering their wives). What a nation of emasculated wusses we've become.

My take on the advert was disappointment in the stereotypical role they cast for the image of a
American woman. First, that she would not be assertive enough to request what she would like as a present. Second, that she would go ballistic over someone's inability to read er mind. Third, that women react in juvenile and retaliative methods when disappointed. Fourth, that seeking happiness through a material "gift" is not true happiness. Fifth, that we have the faux empowerment to be able to degrade another human by putting them in an animal house in the yard.
I dropped JC Penny an email letting them know their
perspective was warped and not appreciated or humourous at all. And, that I hoped it hurt their marketing outcomes in their jewelry dept. sales.
I pray men haven't fallen for this Madison Ave. B.S.

I consider myself to be really fortunate on my job. Sometimes it is hard, but they don't call it work for nothing. I don't have to "dress" in business attire. It's not just that I don't have to were a tie, either. The only thing that's ever been said to me was our CFO complementing me on my latest tattoo.

I love my job. With a little luck I'll do the rest of my career there.

One Christmas, my dad gave my mom a shoe tree (?) for polishing shoes. She was SOOO mad!
Later, he passed out (a regular event) and was sleeping in the bed. She took the ironing board and put it in with him.
I have the picture. LOLOL

Mr. Songbird's ex called yesterday to say she did not want to accept the child support check we had sent her as she had 'not talked to her attorney yet'. And this after we completed mediation! Spit! Her nickname on my husband's ships was "Meal Ticket".

I thought mediation was the process to avoid an attorney?

re: #327 Killgore Trout

And, that I hoped it hurt their marketing outcomes in their jewelry dept. sales.

not all are that way. I have never been nagged, berated or humiliated a day in our marriage of 32 years...... nor has she. Neither of us talk down to each other and both of us accepted early on that we were not marrying our "father" or "mother". We both assumed we were mature adults that were capable of reason.

I don't anything, really, about California's fiscal situation, but I do know that the economic disaster to the financial service industry alone has cost NYS billions of dollars all by itself - aside from tax revenues from no-income earning companies, several BIG employers have laid off tens of thousands of workers in New York and halted new hirings - mostly NYC (Lehman Bros. went bankrupt leaving around 10,000
highly paid (and highly taxed) people unemployed; Citigroup laid off nearly 50,000 well paid, and heavily taxed people and don't forget all those law firms and lawyers, paralegals, secretaries that used to represent those companies, and etc. - think of Michigan if the Big 2 were to go out of business altogether, that's how much the Financial Services sector of the economy meant to NY!

Yep!

It also makes me glad I'm not in New York or California!

Yeah. In 1994 we were living together. I was in a real bad car accident, and it was looking like I was going to have some permenant disability, we just didn't know how much. She informed me that she was moving out the day after I got out of the hospital. All in all, I'm just glad I didn't marry her.

New Alphabet

* A's for arthritis;
* B's the bad back,
* C's the chest pains, perhaps car-d-iac?
* D is for dental decay and decline,
* E is for eyesight, can't read that top line!
* F is for fissures and fluid retention,
* G is for gas which I'd rather not mention.
* H . high blood pressure--I'd rather it low;
* I . for incisions with scars you can show.
* J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend,
* K is for knees that crack when they bend.
* L 's for libido, what happened to sex?
* M is for memory, I forget what comes next.
* N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low;
* O is for osteo, bones that don't grow!
* P for prescriptions, I have quite a few,
* just give me a pill and I'll be good as new!
* Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu?
* R is for reflux, one meal turns to two.
* S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears,
* T is for Tinnitus; bells in my ears!
* U is for urinary; troubles with flow;
* V for vertigo, that's 'dizzy,' you know.
* W for worry, NOW what's going 'round?
* X is for X ray, and what might be found.
* Y for another year I'm left here behind,
* Z is for zest I still have-- in my mind.

Back to your original problem: I was probably about 18-19 and gave my mom something she just hated and was really pissed at me. I told her that if she wanted birthday and Christmas gifts from me in the future that she had to tell me what she wanted and I'd buy it for her no questions asked. It took some work to get her to agree but it's worked out great ever since. I have applied this to girlfriends over the years and it works out pretty well. I usually try for a surprise gift too but if it sucks then at least they have one gift that they like. The most happily married couple I know don't exchange gifts at all. It works well for them.

I'll own up to something right now. While I was separated from my X, he took a trip to a golf resort before Christmas where he spent THOUSANDS of dollars while I was going through the horrific early stages of a difficult pregnancy. I was unable to work more than a few hours a day as a freelance. Due to some complicated legal/banking issues, I could not tap my trust fund so, I had to rely upon my parents to pay the rent, buy groceries, pay the utilities, put gas in my car, et bloody cet..

What did that fucker give me for Christmas? A fucking horrible windchime of shells MADE IN CHINA that he picked up on his fucking vacation. I had saved money for a few months and had bought him a cashmere sweater months before December.

So, yeah. My hide was chapped.

Oh, guess what? I wound up paying not just for his sweater but, also for his credit card bills that paid for his vacation at that golf resort. I also had to pay for that bloody fucking windchime.

Yeah, you are entirely correct. If I'd had any sense I'd have left her long before the accident. The only good thing to come out of it was I got my parrot through her. She was a vet-tech, and they brought my bird in just after she had hatched. One of her little legs was all twisted up. The breeder didn't have the time to spend hand-raising the bird, and so she offered her free to anyone who'd try to feed her and raise her.

She was about the size of my fist when we got her. That's been fourteen or fifteen years ago.

Excellent post....

It's not just men who've fallen for this crap. It's women too. All of us have accepted this as standard behavior. Could you imagine if you reversed the gender roles in that commercial? That would be insane. Women have learned they can act like that and men put up with it so here we are.
I have a hard time being around some married couples because I'm often shocked at how women berate, nag and humiliate their husbands. I couldn't imagine ever seeing a man talk to their wives like that. People have accepted this as "normal".
P.S. If I ever were to get married it would probably not be to an American woman.

"K-T" -

WOMEN - almost from birth - have been programmed to think themselves to be inadequate in ONE way or another. That is NONSENSE. Women are one half, perhaps plus a bit, of Humanity. Women, per se, are OK by human birthright. They are EQUAL, they are NOT IDENTICAL (Congruent).

Men are generally very easy to please, and truly don't mind getting tools to help them do their work - many men are hard-wired to "take care of" things, and it's very easy to keep 'em happy.

Us women on the other hand . . . I at least try to make it easy for the Roi. I cut a picture out of the Christmas catalogue the local jeweler issues and put it on the fridge with a red arrow pointing to the item I would like, and a big "Christmas Gift Idea!" written next to the arrow.

re: #479 Killgore Trout

Excellent post....

It's not just men who've fallen for this crap. It's women too. All of us have accepted this as standard behavior. Could you imagine if you reversed the gender roles in that commercial? That would be insane. Women have learned they can act like that and men put up with it so here we are.
I have a hard time being around some married couples because I'm often shocked at how women berate, nag and humiliate their husbands. I couldn't imagine ever seeing a man talk to their wives like that. People have accepted this as "normal".
P.S. If I ever were to get married it would probably not be to an American woman.

oh oh....

Oh, guess what? I wound up paying not just for his sweater but, also for his credit card bills that paid for his vacation at that golf resort. I also had to pay for that bloody fucking windchime.

You HAD to pay for them?

It was either pay all of his pre-marital and our marital debt in order to just get the divorce done and stop with the passive-aggressive wrangling on his part to get custody of my infant son or, kick the legal fees up really high considering I was already in the appellate system to get a really fucked up UCCJEA decision over-turned.

More than $85,000.00 in legal fees plus about $15,000.00 in debt, and I just had had enough.

I got what mattered: sole legal and physical rights and responsibilities. He's out of our lives for good.

re: #598 reine.de.tout

Men are generally very easy to please, and truly don't mind getting tools to help them do their work - many men are hard-wired to "take care of" things, and it's very easy to keep 'em happy.

When a guy can't fix things:

I keep telling you how special Heart Moms are, it is true! Every word of it! People like Katie’s mom and Colby’s mom expected to be out teaching their kids the things that a growing child needs to know (don’t touch a hot stove, don’t drink that, and don’t try to give the cat a bath!) not sitting in a hospital somewhere. But life isn’t fair. And to their credit, they hide the tears and keep on keepin’ on. Not many people realize that a heart defect breaks three hearts… the Cardiac Kid’s, Mom’s… and especially Dad’s.

They are rarely mentioned, but Heart Dads suffer, too. The man is supposed to be the Protector and Defender of his family. But how do you fight something like this? The answers are maddeningly vague: “As best you can”, and “One day at a time.” That’s almost not an answer. And we’re supposed to have all the answers. Breaking down in tears and shouting “I just don’t know what to DO!” isn’t an acceptable response. So we bite it back, and it eats at us.

And there is no such thing as a normal activity with a Cardiac Kid. Katie’s dad has written of his simple desire to kick a ball with his daughter. And you have to trust other people with your child’s life. For a guy, that’s especially hard to do. Take my child away and cut on him or her? No way. That’s why the men seem to be having the most difficult time in the Surgical Waiting Rooms. Fixing the problem is our job, real men don’t leave the work to someone else.

No. A real man understands that as much as he wants to correct this situation himself and make everything all better, he can’t do it. He might be able to fix the broken heart that occurs after that first crush goes sour, but this is beyond him. So he does the only thing he can: Find someone who knows how to make things better.

If the problem can’t be fixed, at least give us a chance to fight another day. Because we will go to the wall for our family.

Evening folks. The NYT is finally getting around to telling folks the good things that Bush had done during his term in office - like improved health care in underserved areas. Funny, but they didn't mention this when it counted. They were too busy bashing him. /maybe the NYT is looking for a bailout and now tries to suck up?

Agree, way too many women stoop to this berating business. If you want to see a truly GREAT woman, fond the one who builds up her husband, especially in the eyes of others. It is easy to drag down, it is an ART to find the best in people, and then communicate your respect and awe to them and to others!

My parrot healed up nicely. Birds can be such fun, can't they? Dogs love everybody, cats are more reserved, but birds are in a class by themselves. When I got Lilith (my parrot), I had a cockatiel named Baby Girl. Lilith kept trying to kill her, so I had to give her to my parents.

re: #548 Killgore Trout

Back to your original problem: I was probably about 18-19 and gave my mom something she just hated and was really pissed at me. I told her that if she wanted birthday and Christmas gifts from me in the future that she had to tell me what she wanted and I'd buy it for her no questions asked. It took some work to get her to agree but it's worked out great ever since. I have applied this to girlfriends over the years and it works out pretty well. I usually try for a surprise gift too but if it sucks then at least they have one gift that they like. The most happily married couple I know don't exchange gifts at all. It works well for them.

I help him out by sending him links of things that I like - that works pretty well. This year one of my gifts was season tickets to the theater when the Broadway shows come to town. When I opened it he said " I bought you this because you said that we never do anything together anymore and how much you miss it".

He got a very personal upding for that one...

re: #569 Killgore Trout

I wouldn't object to a pressure washer for cleaning the gutters or tool set for household repairs. Those are good practical gifts to me and they'd get some good use. Think about it, could you even imagine a man throwing a temper tantrum over a gift? Traditionally we get the worst stuff (ties, cologne, etc) but we don't complain. It would be regarded as rude and I really don't think men have the same sense of entitlement. We really just don't care enough about it to make a big deal.

Maybe it's a sore subject for some women 'cause we've historically been expected to clean up everyone else's shit.

It's complicated.

I've a really nice pressure washer. Love the thing.

I hope...they all liked me tho...heh...it's important to be a gentleman...I owe it to my own dad
