Christmas Gift: YouTube Videos in Comments

Yes, the unthinkable has come to pass, on this Christmas day — you can now embed a YouTube video in a comment, assuming you’re registered and in good standing.

How to do it:

1) Browse to a YouTube video.

2) Copy/paste the web address of the video (shown at the top of your browser window - not the YouTube embed link!) into the comment.

3) The address will be automagically converted into an embedded video in your comment.

Note: there may be bugs. We’ll figure them out.

UPDATE at 12/25/08 7:51:42 pm:

The feature is temporarily disabled while we work out the kinks. Apparently, some browsers get cranky when asked to load a page containing hundreds of embedded videos.

  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.

The font issue seems to happen on the first line of the comments.

If you hit "enter" and go further into the comments box, your font comes out like normal.

Charles, just a possible bug to add to the list. If you click on a Lizard avatar while a newfangled YouTube embed is onscreen the profile gets hidden behind the video frame. You can scroll past the vid and see the profile, but it is hidden behind the vid, which does not fade with the rest of the thread.

147 ted  Thu, Dec 25, 2008 7:04:22pm

From the Fabulous Movie "Waking Ned Devine".

Lyrics to The Parting Glass :

Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not

I'm trying my laptop now, and it's only marginally better -- even though it has 2 GB RAM.

Gonna try IE8 beta next, maybe its the FF that can't handle the load.

Hmmm... how about this Charles - don't know if it is workable or not, but how about making the only the last linked youtube comment viewed, with the rest remaining links. As items are refreshed, only the most recent becomes an embed (or would this require too much computing power on your end to query databases to ensure that such a system worked?) and the previously visible embed becomes nothing but a regular link. That way, everyone who has posting privileges can get the embeds...

To 7,000 - send a telegram.

It doesn't need a sarc tag - it really is excellent - but it's a satire of the views that it purpotedly promotes. I should have made that clear though especially given that most people will see it but not actually watch it to find that out.

Good Christmas evening Lizards ...

Posting from a motel in Koenesha, WI ...drove here today to pick up equipment ...I was prepared for all snow conditions (inside of truck I have every emergency anything known to man except a tow truck) ...but was I ever surprised at how beautiful the weather was on the trip which took about 10 hours ...

There is much snow left here from the storms of the past few days ...to all Lizards who live in northern states ...I salute you ...so far I have slipped on my butt three times on ice ...slid my truck sideways on an off street ...took a wrong turn (even tho I do have GPS) and ended up in neighborhood where streets not plowed ...got stuck for 15 minutes in front of someones house ...

I guess one look at my license plate told them all they needed to know ...about the person stuck in the snow in front of their house ...

I hope everyone had a great day today!

Blinded by hatred the left cannot bring themselves to be honest. It is part of their pattern of self-betrayal to lie to themselves over the smallest things:

Obama is healthier than president Bush.
Obama is most honest, most ethical...

Theh left literally cannot tell up from down and good from bad - they are so messed up.

What was the Hebrew song you posted, title and artist pls?

Hebrew song?

The song I am guessing you are referring to is 'Sanvean', sung by Lisa Gerrard while as part of the group "Dead Can Dance". I looked forever for a translation of it and could never figure out the language...then I found out it really wasn't.

She doesn't sing in an actual language. She made it up and she refers to it as glossolalia. This is the most emotion striking music I have ever come across. Hands down my favorite music and artist of all time.

Evening all, I hope everyone had a great time during Christmas, we sure did here. Two days of family is enough however, and it's relaxing now that the last stop by for leftovers is done.

We watched a lot of movies, and played a lot of games, and took pictures of the dogs with their funny hats on - they all hate us now.

The bad movies we watched:
Mama Mia (meryl streep was a terrible miscast for this)
The Mummy (great CGI, but if you wanted a plot or acting you were hosed.)
Cloverfield (this one was pretty ok)
The Dark Knight (recommended)
Iron Man (Pretty good)
The Hulk (also pretty good)

Works like a charm. Four wheel drive works much better.

But seriously. If you live in snowy areas, buy the biggest back of the cheapest stuff (it's usually baked clay), and throw it in your trunk. It will add weight that will help you anyway, and it's there if you need it.

In the spring, donate it to a local animal shelter.

Well good evening y'all! I'm late cause frankly I fell asleep after eating Christmas dinner and desert! That thus made my time for med taking late, as well.
And I'm still STUFFED!
How is everyone, how was your Chrismas/Hannuka?

Outstanding as it sounds like yours was.

6 senior singles who had no family present to celebrate with met for dinner at ones home - the sharing between us started on the surface - market losses etc. and then went deep as we opened up to each other personally - quite a bonding experience. Youngest 64 - oldest 78.

Works like a charm. Four wheel drive works much better.

But seriously. If you live in snowy areas, buy the biggest back of the cheapest stuff (it's usually baked clay), and throw it in your trunk. It will add weight that will help you anyway, and it's there if you need it.

In the spring, donate it to a local animal shelter.

when I lived in snow country I would always carry a large bag or two of kitty litter. Excellent and biodegradable. Sandbags full of sand worked well too. Also served to put more weight over the rear axle of the truck.

Thanks so much Real! It is a job dispatching for our local Sheriff's office, only part time, and I don't need health insurance, as I am covered through hubby's retirement package. But it is some income, and that is just a huge relief to us, with the current economy and all. We are on a fixed income, which has taken a hit, just like the rest of America.

Way back before 911, in my neck of the woods local departments did their own dispatching. We rotated through dispatch. Call load was lighter than a center, we familiar with our own district and equipment.

Downside we had to get all the info from the caller, unlike E911 where address and everything is displayed, we had to get it all out of the caller.

It still is iffy: cell phones don't display the addy.
I will probably mostly handle the medical dispatching, which is a huge part of a dispatcher's day.
We have the work divided: one dispatcher handles police/sheriff traffic, one handles medical. Seems to be a fair balance.
All 911 calls must be handled by a certified dispatcher.

But you know, man? You sent me something last year that I wasn't expecting, and it meant a lot that you would do that. That was a very Christmas thing to do.

And... you get double the points - for a jew sending a Christmas present.

I'm glad you chimed in, Sage. Haven't seen you in a while. Been thinking about you.

I'll send you an email tomorrow. I have to turn in for the night.

Around here all cell calls to 911 are routed first to State Patrol, since most 911 cell traffic is for auto related stuff. We've got a number of regional dispatch centers, and calls are routed to the closest center. Dispatch centers hand all police / fire / EMS. Unless call volume is heavy, one dispatcher handles the call, the other reads the on screen info and handles the dispatching.

It's always amazed me how people think that using their tires to create a highly polished divot is somehow better than finding something to create some friction between their tires and the ground.

Well, actually, if you get the rear wheels spinning up to 10,000 RPM, the relativistic mass increase of the tire tread moving at near light-speed causes a great increase in traction.

At least, that's the theory behind it.

re: #428 summergurl

Does kitty litter really work? I hear that you sprinkle it in front and behind your tires and you get moving in a flash..

One thing that does work amazingly well is plain old laundry bleach. Not only does it melt ice quite well, it actually softens the tire tread and makes the surface gummy.

Heh heh... my experience is that it is usually the inexperienced drivers who do that. After you have been driving a while and got stuck a few times (accompanied by severe embarrassment and the amusement of passing children), you learn a few lessons.
I always remind young people who get stuck, that a superior driver avoids situation where he has to demonstrate his superior driving skills (or his SUV's superior capability.)

Well ya know, baseball - heck all sports - rivalries are great, but I gotta tell ya that after rooting for the Yankees for nearly 50 years now, I'm SO EFFIN' PISSED OFF at them - not for the way they throw money around - when they do that their just trying to get a winning team - but because they tore down the House That Ruth Built. I know Yankee Stadium has undergone some renovations and changes over the years, but the facade never changed and it was YANKEE STADIUM for cryin' out loud. It's not like they couldn't draw enough fans to fill it, either. Just totally crass, no respect for baseball history.

I went with some family to the Yankees/Red Sox game last 4th of July there. I was pleasantly surprised to find a parking garage right next to the Thruway off-ramp and stadium itself that was charging a paltry $17 to park there for the afternoon...at least $10 less than what's typically charged to park anywhere near Fenway.

Altho I'm sure Stadium-convenient parking for less than $20 will go the way of the dodo when the new building opens up.

An M-4, kind of looks like an M-16, with shortened barrell and collapsible butt stock.
Sweet carbine, I had a broom handle on mine and CCOL. Hit 36 out of 40 pop up targets with it during qualification.

Had the gangster grip on mine, surefire with remote trigger, regular CCO, and my PEQ2. I qualified expert on mine last go around too. Pretty damn good rifle, better than the POS m16 I had during the trainup.

That's just wonderful. I grew up in a town with a Volunteer Fire Department and you could ask the Sheriff for a ride home if it was snowing and you had had one too many. Ha Ha

I'm in Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. territory now. They couldn't possibly do that but they have community officers that do quite a lot. Someone usually has to bring their attention to it, though.

But I pretty much boo him every chance I get. And, being completely honest here, when we first got him, I thought "Wow, A-Rod and Jeter - left side of the infield is gonna do some hitting! And of course Jeter has - didja know Jeter has more post-season hits than any player in the history of baseball? - but A-Rod doesn't seem, ah, focused, especially not with a game or series on the line.

Well ya know, baseball - heck all sports - rivalries are great, but I gotta tell ya that after rooting for the Yankees for nearly 50 years now, I'm SO EFFIN' PISSED OFF at them - not for the way they throw money around - when they do that their just trying to get a winning team - but because they tore down the House That Ruth Built Epstein Demolished.

Fixed that for ya...

Truth be told, about 8 or 9 years ago I felt it was important that I get to as many Fenway home games as possible because it seemed like a sure thing that it was only a matter of time before she got pulled down. That changed with the new ownership, using the ballparks age and history as part of its marketing...but I couln't imagine Yankee Stadium being torn down- at least not before Fenway.

We have a really small police department here - seriously, maybe 30 officers altogether, and I've hadda call 'em twice - fortunately neither time was an emergency, something I made CLEAR to them and they had a car and a cop here in less than 2 minutes both times.
Course the cops looked too young to me to be able to be cops (!) but they were! Very friendly and considerate too. I also lived and worked in Manhattan, NYC for over 35 years and I have to say the same thing about the cops up there - they are not rude, they do come in a hurry and they do care about what your complaint may be.
I generally find Cops, Sheriff's and other LEO's to be very courteous and professional.

But the corruption and selfishness I encountered was really annoying, I heard stories about homosexuality in the ranks of the IA, and about man love Thursday nights. Never saw it first hand though.

I hear the VA is getting better, more resources, better equipment, newer facilities... but there are still some needs. I hear that many are now working for the VA... so they understand the needs of the guys who got hurt down range.
I gotta give them an A for trying... based on what I am reading ... but from time to time I still read about some poor service.

I volunteer at the one at Fort Miley. Ms. rawmuse works there full time. If ever I can help out, let me know. I agree, there are people there that desperately deserve firing, and it is near impossible to do it. You all deserve better.

re: #714 realwest

Hey Dusty - I'm reasonably sure, back in our day, that they inserted their heads and kept 'em that way.
In fact the VA "out reach" center was usually one guy reading a paperback novel. Then when the Iran Hostages came home and me and 7 other Vietnam Vets noted that we were - according to the U.S. Department of Labor, something like SEVEN TIMES more likely to be unemployed than our non veteran age peers. So we 8 started a charity to help VV's get jobs and I'm REALLY PROUD to say that after 11 years, we'd placed over 4,000 guys in full time, career jobs. Best damn thing I've ever done with my life.

Thank you for your dedication.

Here is a nice lil .22 that you would love and you can learn with:
Sig Sauer Mosquito
Sig Sauer Mosquito

Wish that it had been around in 98 - took a new GF to the range - gave her one of my my 45s - she shook and shimmied like a pole dancer every time she fired much to the delight of the range personnel. - And me.

They offered her a .22 - she loved it.

We had issues with "man-love" in the convoys. The guys we replaced warned us about the TCNs (third country nationals) that drove the semis. Do NOT just go and open the door to their trucks. Always knock first! We opened a few without warning and saw some things we'd rather not talk about.

So we all just marched our asses over there and gave 'em verbal hell. After that they responded pretty quickly. As I said, I KNOW some VA's are better at getting treatment and all - and it seems like I've heard that about all VA hospitals in Texas - maybe the problem is which VA you've been using?

I know a few of those folks, they are really dedicated. I don't know if the Army National Guard has a similar organization.

I have called the VA, numerous times. They keep telling me to hurry up and wait, someone will contact me shortly and set up an appointment. It's hard to contact the right person when you don't know who the right person is. Unless the VA starts chauffeuring me around, I'll keep going to the one in Minneapolis.

For Christmas I got him a gas piston retrofit conversion and a flash suppressor so he can get that stupid Y-Comp (Clinton ban era gun) cut off and have the barrel threaded. I figure if I can get him new stuff for his firearms, he'll stop "improving" mine.
